Bonnie Rae Darrah, 96, of Burlington, died Monday, May 20, 2024, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in West Burlington.

Born May 20, 1928, in Keithsburg, Ill., she was the daughter of Fredrick C. and Jessie M. Beckman Breuer. On May 2, 1948, she married Harry Eugene Darrah in Burlington. He passed on March 2, 1996.

She attended Burlington Schools and graduated from Burlington High School in 1946. 

Mrs. Darrah worked for Burlington Instrument Company, Sears, Spurgeons, and Sylvania. She also owned and operated Darrah's Confectionary along side her husband from 1953 through 1958. Bonnie was a matron at the Des Moines County Jail where she and her husband resided for four years when he was a deputy sheriff. She also worked for the City of Burlington for 26 years for the Parking Enforcement Department and the Finance Department until her retirement in 1992.

She volunteered for Great River Medical Center for 9 years. Bonnie enjoyed traveling, reading, attending craft shows, boating, camping and spending time with her family. She was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church. She was known for her cooking, especially her pasta salad, apple bread, pumpkin bread and homemade noodles.  

Survivors include two daughters, Nancy (Ron) Mower of Burlington and Sally (Allan) Bailey of Danville; three grandchildren, Tyler Mower of Fairfax, Amy (Grant) Shriver of Mooresville, NC, and Brogan Bailey of Coralville; two great-grandchildren, Kylan Mower and Avery Shriver; and several nieces and nephews. 

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, one brothers, Glen Breuer, three sisters, Velma Meyer, Verna Hollinrake, and Leona Weaver and two infant sisters.

Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. with the family to receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, May 23, 2024, at Prugh's Chapel, 317 North 4th.

The funeral service for Mrs. Darrah will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 24, 2024, at Prugh's Chapel, 317 North 4th.  Burial will be in Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery.  A time of food and fellowship will be held at Bethany Lutheran Church following the burial.

Memorials have been established for Des Moines County Humane Society and Bethany Lutheran Church.
