BHS soccer teams sweep Keokuk

Burlington High School’s soccer teams opened Southeast Conference play Thursday night with wins for both the boys and girls.

The BHS boys beat Keokuk, 5-1, at Bracewell Stadium, and the girls topped the Chiefs, 9-0, at Keokuk.

The Grayhound boys led 4-0 at halftime. Terig Brown opened the scoring for BHS in the eighth minute. Also scoring for the Grayhounds were Mateo Weir, Braden Schoene, Christian Snyder, and Brennen Winke. Eddy Valdez had two assists. Winke and Henry Kotleba each had an assist. Goalkeeper Cayden Lowery had three assists.

BHS (2-1, 1-0 SEC) plays at Fairfield Monday.

The Burlington girls improved to 1-1 (1-0) and play at Fort Madison on April 17. Statistics for the Keokuk game were not available Friday morning.

GIRLS TENNIS

Burlington High School’s girls tennis team remained undefeated in three dual meets with an 8-1 win over Fairfield in a Southeast Conference meet at Fairfield Thursday.

The Grayhounds won five singles matches and all three doubles matches.

In singles, Burlington picked up victories from Emily Mosley, 8-2 over Sydney Wells; Macy McGinity, 8-2 over Maddy Greiner; Anna Buxton, 8-3 over Emma Wenland; Hannah Wegman, 8-1 over Una Carter; and Mallory Krow, 8-3 over Lola Hastchette.

In doubles: Mosley and McGinity beat Wells and Greiner, 8-6; Buxton and Madison Taeger topped Wenland and Giteeka Adhikari, 8-3; and Wegman and Krow defeated Carter and Hastchette, 8-1.

Fairfield’s lone victory came at No. 4 singles with Adhikari beating Taeger, 8-5.

Burlington’s next dual is scheduled for April 13 at Mount Pleasant.

GIRLS TRACK & FIELD

Burlington High School won two relays and finished eighth in the team race in the 13-team Washington Invitational Thursday night.

Mid-Prairie won the team title with 130 points, Cedar Rapids Prairie was second at 122 and Mount Pleasant finished third with 109 ½ points. Burlington totaled 36 points.

The Grayhounds won the 4x100 relay in 51.52 seconds and the 4x200 in 1:50.39. BHS was fourth in the 800-meter medley relay with a time of 2:02.05.

Burlington’s top individual finish came from freshman Daphne Brown, who finished fourth in the 400-meter hurdles. She was clocked at 1:15.54.

Burlington competes in the Wilkinson Invitational hosted by Cedar Rapids Kennedy on Saturday.
