Jo Ann Costello, 84, of Burlington, died Friday, July 7, 2023, in St. Camillus Hospice Care in Wauwatosa, Wis.
Born July 15, 1938, in Mystic, she was the daughter of Leo Cyril and Lennie Marie Hamm Cooper. On Jan. 9, 1965, she married James Michael Costello in St. Ambrose Cathedral in Des Moines. He died on Dec. 31, 2019.
She was a 1956 graduate of Mystic High School.
Jo Ann worked for Hawkeye Security in Des Moines before becoming a mother and homemaker. In 1981, she and her husband opened their bar "Costello's" on Agency Street, which was at this location until 1991. In 1993, they built a new "Costello's" on Derek Lincoln Drive, which they owned until 2003, when they both retired.
She was a member of Divine Mercy Parish. She lived at Addington Place of Burlington since the Fall of 2021 and made many new friends. She enjoyed watching Cardinals Baseball, Iowa Hawkeyes, and playing bingo. But most of all, she loved spending time with her grandchildren.
Survivors include her daughter, Jill (Michael) Lund of Brookfield, Wis.; three grandchildren: Madeline, Emily and Olivia, and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband Jim, her parents, five brothers, and three sisters.
Visitation will be Monday, July 17, 2023, at Prugh Funeral Service, 3940 Division Street. The family will receive friends following a 4:30 p.m. Rosary Service until 7 p.m.
The Funeral Mass of the Resurrection for Mrs. Costello will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 18, 2023, at Divine Mercy Parish-St. John the Baptist Catholic Church with Fr. Jake Greiner as the Celebrant. A time of food and fellowship will be held at St. John's Cafeteria following the Funeral Mass. Graveside Committal Service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 19, 2023, at Beaver Catholic Cemetery in Granger.
A memorial has been established for Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice in Burlington.
