
James W. Moffitt, 96, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, formerly of Nauvoo, Illinois, passed away on Thursday, August 6, 2026, at Linn Manor Care Center in Marion, Iowa.
He was born on June 13, 1930, the son of John R. and Helen (Hillesheim) Moffitt. On October 27, 1962, he married Hannelore Meixner in Nauvoo, Illinois.
Survivors include his wife: Hannelore; four children: John Patrick Moffitt, Timothy Karl Moffitt, Michael Anthony Moffitt, Mary Colleen (Moffitt) Russell; six grandchildren: Melissa (Bryan) Bolger, Lauren (Andrew) Buccola, James (Meggan) Moffitt, Bradley (Nikki) Moffitt, Brennan Moffitt, Taylor (William) Krane, Andrew Russell; five great grandchildren: Julian and Wyatt Bolger, CC and Claire Buccola and William Moffitt. Also surviving are various nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother: Tom Moffitt; sisters: Maxine Wedel, Dorothy Rose, Mary Hellige and Theresa Auge.
Jim was a member of Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church, the Nauvoo Knights of Columbus, Nauvoo Historical Society and the Nauvoo Tourism Council. He served in the United States Army. Jim was a salesman and entrepreneur owning Hand Picked Cars in Nauvoo, which was later converted into the Nauvoo Ice Cream Shoppe.
Per his wishes his body has been entrusted to the crematory of Schmitz-Banks & Beals Funeral Home for cremation.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, August 21, 2026, at Saints Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Nauvoo with Father Tony Trosley as celebrant.
Burial will be in Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Cemetery.
A memorial has been established in his memory.
