Thomas Lee Hemerling, 77, of Middletown, died Sunday, March 26, 2023, at Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in West Burlington.
Born Oct. 23, 1945, in Burlington, he was the son of Howard and Frances Schmidt Hemerling. He married Irene Dansdill on Dec. 26, 1964, at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Burlington.
Tom worked for Bonewitz Chemical for 10 years from 1963-1973, he then began working as a Millwright for J.I. Case/CNH for 30 years until his retirement.
He was a member of the local UAW 807 for 30 years and was an Eagle Scout. He enjoyed spending time working on and riding his Harley Davidson motorcycles and his pickup trucks and being in his garage. He was a truly amazing millwright and could fix anything.
He loved dinners with his family and friends and especially his time with them and his dog Annie. He was loved and will be missed by his wife’s entire Dansdill family.
Survivors include his wife, Irene Hemerling of Middletown; niece and nephew Chantelle and Bruce Diewold of Burlington; great niece and nephew Chloe Diewold and Chason Diewold; cousin Don Hemerling and Aunt and Uncle Betty and Tony Stanley all of Burlington.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Charles Hemerling and sister-in-law Connie Hemerling.
The funeral service for Mr. Hemerling will be at noon Saturday, April 1 at St. Mary Catholic Church in West Burlington. The Rev. Father James Flattery will officiate. The family will receive friends from 10:30 a.m. until the time of service on Saturday. Interment will be held in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Memorials have been established for the Des Moines County Humane Society and Burlington Notre Dame.
