Jerry Leon Smith, 80, of Galesburg, Ill., passed away peacefully on Saturday March 8, 2025, after many medical challenges. Son of Harlan and Dorthy Smith, he was born March 5, 1945, in Burlington.
He graduated in 1963 from Burlington High School and was later drafted and served two tours in Vietnam. He was wounded in action and later given one of the most well-respected military decorations - The Purple Heart.
Jerry worked 25 years as an insulator out of Local #81. He was an avid collector or many classic cars and trucks, and attended many shows to display them.
Jerry was a good father, husband and a strong believer in Christian faith.
He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Lois Smith; children, Mitchell Smith of Nashville, Tenn. and Shannon Smith of Phoenix, Ariz. He is also survived by two stepsons, two stepdaughters and many grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held at Aspen Grove Cemetery Sunrise Garden at 11 a.m. Friday, March 14, with a luncheon to follow
