
Shirley L. Hancock, 67, of New London, passed away peacefully on June 19, 2025, surrounded by her loving family at the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics in Iowa City.
Born on June 9, 1958, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Kenneth and Marilyn (Poland) Sutcliffe. On Sept. 10, 1994, in Burlington, she married Jim Hancock. He survives.
Shirley was a 1976 graduate of Burlington High School and graduated from Southeastern Community College. She worked for the Wal-Mart Distribution Center for 34 years where she retired from. The last 10 years at Wal-Mart Distribution Center she worked dispatch. Shirley was one of the original founding members of Lake Geode. She loved her pets, camping, being outdoors, hiking the trails at Lake Geode and cooking big meals for her family. She and Jim enjoyed taking trips to state and national parks but her most favorite trip was to Jamaica. Most of all Shirley enjoyed nothing more than being with her family, which brought her the most joy in life.
She is survived by her husband Jim; siblings: Lena (Everett) Fye of Olena, Illinois, Ken Sutcliffe and Tina (Tom) Smith, all of Burlington; two aunts: Karon Belcher of Burlington and Beverly Myllo of Oklahoma. Also surviving are several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents, parents, several aunts, uncles, cousins and other loving family members.
The funeral service for Shirley will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 24, 2025, at Lunning Chapel with Pastor Larry Dodds officiating. A one-hour visitation will be held prior to the service at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 24, 2025, at Lunning Chapel where the family will meet with friends.
