Wayne Weldon Johnson, 67, of West Burlington, died Feb. 4, 2023, at his home in North Scottsdale, Ariz.

Wayne was the oldest child of Janice Crist Johnson and John R. Johnson. He was born Feb. 10, 1955, in Burlington, and was raised in Morning Sun. He was an outstanding athlete and lettered in the following four sports: baseball, football, basketball, and golf. He graduated from Morning Sun Community High School Class of 1973, and after high school, Wayne attended two years at the University of Missouri.

Following his college studies, he joined the family businesses of Johnson Holding Company working for J&J Steel, Bi-State Crane, Worldwide Construction, Ideal Ready Mix, and L&W Quarries. In 2015 Wayne began to winter in Arizona and continued to serve as a Johnson Holding Company board director and active manager. 

Wayne was a sports aficionado and avid fan of the Hawkeyes, Miami Dolphins, and St. Louis Cardinals. He was also a fan of NASCAR racing. He owned and operated Son-Way Racing and sponsored late model dirt track race cars and area drivers; Steve Keppler #76, Ron Jackson #circle11, Danny Harris #circle11, Duane Steffe #B1, Mark Keltner #41, Bruce Hanford #2, Chad Simpson #25, and his favorite driver and younger brother, Jay #5 and #93.

He is survived by his loving siblings; Scott and Julia Johnson, Cristy and Michael Schmidt, Jay and Mindy Johnson, and nieces and nephews; Nathan Schmidt, Jaclyn Johnson, Ross and Natalie Johnson, Graham and Sarah Johnson, and Jamie Johnson. 

A Celebration of Life honoring Wayne will be held Saturday, Feb. 18, 2023, at Burlington Golf Club, 2124 Sunnyside Avenue, Burlington, from 1 to 3 p.m. Wayne's family invites you to join them in honoring a life well lived as they share their favorite stories at 1:30 p.m. Please dress in your favorite team or company logo, just as Wayne would have.

Wayne will be laid to rest in Conesville Cemetery, Conesville, Ia.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established to honor Wayne's life at Craig Hospital, a rehabilitation hospital for individuals with spinal cord injuries located in Englewood, Colo.
