Paul U. Walz, 90, of Burlington, died Friday, Sept. 22, 2023, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice in West Burlington.

Born July 21, 1933, in Burlington, he was the son of Carl and Rosetta Moehn Walz. In 1954, he married Suzanne Crane in Bellville, Ill..  On Sept. 2, 1977, he married Doris J. McColloch Hellenthal in West Burlington. 

Paul worked for five years for the Des Moines County Sheriff Department and four and half years for Burlington Police Department.  Before retiring in 1991, after 26 years of service with the Burlington School District as school bus transportation director.  

He was a 1953 graduate of Burlington High School.  

He was a U.S. Air Force Veteran with the rank of Airman First Class, serving during the Korean War from 1953 until 1957.

He was a member of Divine Mercy Parish and the Moose Lodge #579.  He enjoyed golfing, gardening, dancing and volunteering.  

Survivors include his wife, Doris J. Walz of West Burlington; two sons, Brian Walz of Elburn, Ill. and David Walz of Johnsburg, Ill.;  three daughters, Melissa Boldebuck of Van Buren, Ark., Theresa Castro of Brooksfield, Ill. and Mary Lluhi of Mount Dora, Fla.; one step-son, Nick Hellenthal of Cedar Falls; 10 grandchildren, Jonathan, Ryan Paul, Giancarlo, Brent, Ryan Matthew, Erin, Victoria, Sara, Emilie, and Adriana; six great-grandchildren, Nathan, Naomi, Delphina, Keira, Jaeden, and Arabella and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Joseph, one sister, Rosemary Freedman, one grandson, Scott David Walz and one son-in-law, Craig Boldebuck.  

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for St. Vincent de Paul Society.  

The family is grateful to the caring staff of Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice in West Burlington, for the compassion and comfort they gave to Paul and his family.
