Doris J. Walz, 95, of Burlington, died Tuesday, January 13, 2026, at the Thuesen Cottage, Western Home Communities in Cedar Falls.

Born August 13, 1930, in Burlington, IA, she was the daughter of Albert and Dora (Poggemiller) McColloch Sr.

Doris attended and graduated from Burlington High School.  She later married Wayne Hellenthal on May 17, 1947.  Doris helped Wayne work and manage their farm for over 20 years.  Unfortunately Wayne passed away June 5, 1968. Doris later married Paul Walz on Sept 2, 1977 and enjoyed 46 years with Paul before his death on September 22, 2023.

Doris worked for the Winegard Company for ten years and later for the Iowa Department of Human Services for thirteen years before retiring in 1990.

Doris was a very active and intelligent woman.  In her youth, and later into her adult life, she enjoyed roller and ice skating.  She had a passion for line dancing and kept dancing until her 90's.  Doris had a very artistic mind and had a passion for sewing and crafting.  Many beautiful afghans and quilts adorned her home that were made by her hand; she would even make outfits for her family and Halloween costumes for the kids.  Doris had an eye for collectibles and liked spending her time finding the perfect item at flea markets and garage sales.  It made the hunt worthwhile when she found the perfect treasure at a great price.

She looked forward to traveling the United States with Paul; going to conventions and wintering in Arizona.  Despite her travels, she was a Burlingtonite to her core and had great pride in her town.  Her mind retained many historical facts about Burlington that she enjoyed sharing with as many people as she could.  She loved Crapo Park and had many great memories ice skating in the park.

Moreover, Doris loved her family.  She liked knowing the history of where her family came from and researching her genealogy.  She loved her children and grandchildren tremendously and was proud of their success in life.  Doris will be missed deeply but her memory and legacy will continue on through all who love her.

Survivors include her son, Nicholas (Glenda) Hellenthal of Cedar Falls, IA; step-children, Brian Walz of Elburn, IL, David Walz of Johnsburg, IL, Melissa  Boldebuch of Van Buren, AR, Theresa Castro of Brookfield, IL, Mary Lluhi of Mount Dora, FL; ten grandchildren, Brent, Ryan Matthew, Jonathan, Ryan Paul, Giancarlo, Erin, Victoria, Sara, Emilie, and Adrianna; seven great grandchildren, Nathan, Naomi, Delphina, Keira, Jaeden, Arabella and Orion, and several nieces and nephews.

Sadly, Doris was preceded in death by her first husband, Wayne, and second husband, Paul; three brothers, Orville, Albert, and Dale McColloch; two sisters, Elsie Miller and Vivian Johnson; and one step-grandson, Scott David Walz.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh Crematory.

Visitation will be from 9:30 AM until 10:30 AM on Saturday, January 24, 2026 at Prugh Funeral Service, 3940 Division Street.

The memorial service for Mrs. Walz will be 10:30 AM, on Saturday, January 24, 2026 at Prugh Funeral Service with Pastor Nancy Sutherland officiating.  Inurnment to follow at Aspen Grove Cemetery.  A time of food and fellowship will be held in the community room at Prugh Funeral Service following the burial.

Memorials have been established for West Burlington United Methodist Church and St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry.

Please continue to keep Doris' family in your thoughts during this difficult time.
