Dean Boysen, 87, of West Burlington, died Friday, Dec. 1, 2023, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in West Burlington.

Born June 10, 1936, in Denison, he was the son of Henry F. and Inez Childress Boysen and lived with his parents on the family farm in Deloit. Dean proudly served his country in the US Army prior to the start of the Vietnam War, he was stationed in Panama.

On April 22, 1977, he married Margaret Virginia West in Burlington. From this union, Dean gained three additional sons, Larry, Joe, and Donnie. Dean and Virginia also added a daughter DeeAnn to the family. Virginia preceded him in death on June 27, 2019.

Dean was a High Lineworker and Lineman working for Local Union 55 IEBW around his hometown and moving across the state of Iowa until he landed in Burlington. He worked for them for 27 years. He and his wife, Virginia, then ran the Plaza Pub Tavern in Burlington, Iowa for seven fun-filled years, where many friends and memories were made. After leaving the pub, Dean worked for Drain Doctor and many other jobs over the years. 

Dean was confirmed in the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. He enjoyed fishing going for walks and helping his neighbors. Dean was a handyman and was always busy working on something or working in his yard. He will be lovingly remembered for his great sense of humor. 

Survivors include his daughter, DeeAnn (Scot) Bokhoven of New Sharon; two sons, Larry West of Athens, Ill. and Joe (Marlene) O'Donnell of Burlington; former daughter-in-law, Kathy West; 14 grandchildren, Trisha (Dan), Ryan (Shannon), Megan (Logan), Michael (Shonna), Dezmon (Candice), David (Sarah), Christine, and Caleb; 10 great-grandchildren; Kayla, Tyler, Lauryn, Elizabeth, Makayla, Miles, Micah, Layla, Nolan and Aiden; brother, Don Boysen of West Plains, Mo.; and several nieces and nephews.

Besides his wife of 42 years, he was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, Hubert, Leonard, Melvin, Jim and Joe; one son, Donald Shuster; grandson, Shane West; great-grandson, Hunter O'Donnell and one sister, LaVurne Boysen.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh Crematory.

Family will receive friends from 9:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 9, 2023, at Prugh Funeral Service, 3940 Division Street.

The memorial service for Mr. Boysen will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 9, 2023, at Prugh Funeral Service, 3940 Division Street with Pastor Dean Graber officiating.  Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.  A time of food and fellowship will be held in the community room at Prugh Funeral Service following the burial.

A memorial has been established for Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice.
