Barbara S. Akers, 66, of Burlington, died Thursday, July 4, 2024, in Mediapolis.

Born Sept. 19, 1957, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Douglas Allen and Bonnie Jean Distelhorst Wyss. On Feb. 1, 1977, she married Jerry Akers Sr. He preceded her in death on April 9, 1997. On Jan. 2, 1999 she married Robert Schneider. They later divorced but remained lifelong friends. 

Barbara worked as the supervisor of housekeeping at the Nauvoo Temple and Ft. Madison hospital.

Barbara was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. She enjoyed crocheting, genealogy, traveling, camping with her family, and feeding missionaries. She really loved Eeyore from Winnie the Pooh and had a vast collection of figurines and stuffed animals.

Survivors include two daughters, Rachel (Nick) Kemp of DeForest,Wis. and Ashley (Josh) Gelsthorpe of Ft. Madison; one step-son, Jerry Akers Jr. of West Point; seven grandchildren, Nathan Kemp, Natalie Kemp, Norah Kemp, Nolan Kemp, Conner Gelsthorpe, Lillian Gelsthorpe, and Leah Gelsthorpe; one sister, Tammy (David) Yotter of Mediapolis; and longtime friend, Robert E. Schneider of Burlington.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and a brother in infancy, Ronald Wyss.

Visitation with the family to receive friends will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, July 8, 2024, at Prugh Funeral Service, 3940 Division Street.

The funeral service for Barbara Akers will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 9, 2024, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints with Bishop Dan Bartlett officiating. Burial will be in Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery. A time of food and fellowship will be held at the church following the burial. 

A memorial has been established for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

Barbara's family would like to thank all of her caregivers for the wonderful care they had provided to her over the years.
