David L. Smith, 84, of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, formerly of Burlington, died Sunday, May 17, 2026, at Park Place in Mount Pleasant.

Born on December 20, 1941, in Clinton, Iowa, he was the son of George and Martha Winters Smith. He married Diane Glatting, and of that union, they had two children, Barry and Tammy. They later divorced. On February 10, 1995, he married Pam McAllister.

David worked for the City of Burlington Police Department for twenty-nine years and became a captain until his retirement on January 1, 1995. He also worked for Hy-Vee for twenty-two years. David was a hug Chicago Cubs fan. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, horseback riding, traveling and being outdoors. What brought David the most joy was being with his family.

He is survived by his wife Pam; four children: Barry (Donna) Smith and Tammy (James) Foster all of Oquawka, Illinois, Travis (Stephanie) McAllister of Mt. Union, Iowa, and Stacey (Jamie) Blanchard of Deatsville, Alabama; twelve grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. Also surviving are two siblings Mike (Cheryl) Smith and Maureen Gorzney.

He was preceded in death by his parents and sister Kathy Smith.

Per his wishes cremation has been entrusted and accorded to the care of Lunning Chapel.

A celebration of life will be held Friday May 22 at 10:00 at the medium shelter house Crapo Park Burlington, Iowa.
