David Robert Schwenker, 42, passed away Wednesday, July 10, 2024, at Mercy Medical Hospital in Des Moines.

David was born March 5, 1982, to Kenneth “Ken” and Elizabeth “Beth” Callaway Schwenker in Burlington. He was a 2000 graduate of Burlington High School and graduated from Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa, earning his Bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering. He moved to Des Moines where he began his career with IMT Insurance Company.

David enjoyed life. He played for many years in several adult hockey leagues in Central Iowa, both ice and roller hockey. He was a familiar face at both the Des Moines Buccaneers and Iowa Wild games as a season ticket holder to both teams.

David inherited a love of working with tools and wood from his father and maternal grandfather. He built a shed for his backyard, a coffee table and liked to carve. He enjoyed working on his own home. He also had an amazing talent at putting together jigsaw puzzles. David liked to cook, kept a salt water fish tank, plants and a garden. He seemed naturally good at anything he attempted.

He loved the outdoors and went on many camping and hiking trips, he summited mountains and loved to snowboard.

He is survived by his sister; Katherine “Kathy” Schwenker; many aunts, uncles and cousins and his wife Barbara Becker.

He was preceded in death by his parents, maternal grandparents Lester and Vera Callaway and paternal grandparents Robert and Bernice Schwenker.

Visitation will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 16 at Lunning Chapel. Burial will be held in Aspen Grove Cemetery at 12 p.m. Wednesday, July 17.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for the Des Moines County Humane Society in memory of David.
