Joseph E. “Joe” Deal, 82, of Burlington, died unexpectedly Saturday, July 15, 2023, in Panama City, Panama.

Born Aug. 1, 1940, in Spring Valley, Ill., he was the son of Sanford and Alice Glover Deal. After graduating from DePue Illinois High School, he earned his bachelor’s degree from Elmhurst College.

He served in the Army during the Vietnam War.

Joe married Sandra Holtman on Feb. 12, 1966, in Ursa, Ill.

Prior to purchasing Central Duplicating, which he owned and operated for 22 years, Joe worked for the AB Dick Company in Chicago and resided in Lombard, Ill. He currently was serving as president of the MFS Insurance Company board. In addition, Joe served on the governing board of the Mayflower Community an affiliation of the United Church of Christ, as well as served on the United Church of Christ Conference Board. Joe also received his NCAA official certification for swimming.

He was a member of Zion United Church of Christ and served on the consistory and sang in the church choir.

Joe was very sociable and loved to talk with and visit people. He did not know a stranger, he loved to tease and joke around and had an infectious smile that would light up a room.

He is survived by his wife Sandra Deal of Burlington; three daughters, Diana (Scott) Casady of Waukee, Julie Deal of Portland, Ore. and Andrea (Tony) Lallis of Troy, Mo.; three granddaughters, Ainsley Drinkall, Finley Casady, Zoey Lallis; two grandsons, Jamison Lallis and Bailey Lallis; one brother John Deal; three sister-in-laws Wilna Johnston, Jeanette Werner and Sylvia (Ralph) Baxter as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three siblings, Mary Jean Carstons, Warren Johnston and Robert Johnston.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7:00 p.m. Monday, August 7 at Lunning Chapel, where the family will receive friends. A memorial funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, August 8 at Zion United Church of Christ. Rev. Carolyn Blair will officiate. A private family burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.
