Kim Roxane Hand, 67, of Burlington, died Monday, July 28, 2025, at the Birkwood Village of Fort Madison in Fort Madison. Born Feb. 25, 1958, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Ervin and Carol Jean Goodwin. &nbsp;She was married to Jim Hand for close to 20 years but later divorced.&nbsp;

Kim worked for Hope Haven for over 20 years sorting cans. &nbsp;She later worked with Goodwill for an additional two years. &nbsp;

Kim was one of a kind. &nbsp;She inherited her kindness from her mom. &nbsp;She liked to enjoy two 7-7's just like granny. &nbsp;Kim never knew a stranger and loved all people and animals - especially her cat, Dexter. &nbsp;She cherished her family deeply and enjoyed spending as much time with them as she could.

Kim's passing leaves a sadness, but her kindness and memory will be carried by all who love her.

Kim's family include her siblings, Daniel (Lori) Goodwin, Ronald (Renee) Goodwin, Jason, Tracy (Chad) Martin, and Wendy (Lennie Lock) Goodwin; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Sadly, Kim was preceded in death by her mother, Carol; and her granny Owens.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh Crematory. &nbsp;A celebration of life for Kim will be held Thursday, July 31, from 4 to 6 p.m. with a taco bar at Wake and Bake Breakfast Company (713 Jefferson Street, Burlington).

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for the family.

William Harold Osborne Jr., 89, of Burlington, died Tuesday, July 29, 2025, at the Illinois Veterans Home in Quincy, Ill..

Born June 28, 1936, in Burlington, he was the son of William and Margaret Fitzgerald Osborne.

Bill served his country for 20 years, first in the Marines and then in the Army. &nbsp;After Bill retired from the service he worked for the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant for many years and also served in the Iowa National Guard. &nbsp;Bill had a good sense of humor. &nbsp;He was a hard worker throughout his life and enjoyed his downtime by going to the Hungry Bear for breakfast with his friends. &nbsp;They would often go fishing after to enjoy the day. &nbsp;Bill's passing leaves a sadness, but his memory will continue through his friends and family.

Bill's family include his brother, Jim (Connie) Osborne; and many nieces and nephews.

Sadly, &nbsp;Bill is preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Robert, Richard and John; and sister, Shirley.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh Crematory.

Born on April 16, 1976, in Burlington, he was the son of David and Paula Askew Elledge.

He is survived by his parents Dave and Paula and a large extended family from coast to coast. Also surviving are very special friends.

Claude M. Frisbee, 88, of Burlington, died Saturday, July 26, 2025, at the Klein Center in West Burlington.

Born Nov. 2, 1936, in Shelbina, Mo., he was the son of Beryl H. and Martha "Mattie" Porter Frisbee. On December 25, 1955, he married Rosa Lee Richards in Shelbina, Mo. She preceded him in death on Oct. 13, 2021.

He was a graduate of Shelbina High School. Claude worked as a mechanical engineer for JI Case Corp for 42 years and was awarded 64 patents during his career.

Growing up on a farm instilled a love of nature for Claude at a young age. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, canoeing and pretty much anything to do with being outdoors. Claude also enjoyed working on a variety of woodworking projects in his shop.

Survivors include two sons, Matthew Frisbee of Burlington and Beryl "Gene" Frisbee of Houston, Texas; daughter, Cathy Frisbee of West Burlington; seven grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; brother, Harold Frisbee of Kansas City, Mo.; sister, Marylou Carter of Virginia and former sister-in-law, Annette Frisbee of Kansas City, Mo..

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, son, Edward Frisbee and one granddaughter.&nbsp;

There will be no visitation or services. He will be entombed with his wife at Aspen Grove Cemetery.

William James "Bill" Beaty, 75, of Middletown, passed away at his home July 19, 2025, surrounded by his family and dog Harley (who never left his side).

Born July 15, 1950, in Keokuk, he was the son of Wilfred and Francis Ewers Beaty. &nbsp;He went to Keokuk Senior High School, which he eventually left to start in the workforce.

In 1970 he married Lucille Swinderman but later divorced. &nbsp;Together they had two children, Keith Beaty and Jamie Beaty.

Bill was a &nbsp;member of Operating Engineers Local 148 at Foote Mineral until the strike in 1985 and most of the employees lost their jobs. &nbsp;He sold fireworks and antique reproduction furniture from 1992 until 2004 south of Wayland, Mo., and worked as a home contractor during that time. &nbsp;In 2001 he worked as a member of Operating Engineers Local 150 at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant powerhouse where he eventually retired. &nbsp;

Bill had a passion for fast cars, boating and motorcycling. &nbsp;He spent countless hours polishing and maintaining his possessions. &nbsp;Many would remember his 4th of July celebrations. &nbsp;Bill loved discussing current events and the political landscape which was known to all who knew him. &nbsp;He enjoyed nothing more than a discussion on the issue of the day. &nbsp;He wasn't afraid to share his perspective on the world. &nbsp;If you knew him you knew.

Survivors include son, Keith Beaty, daughter, Jamie (Michelle) Beaty; grandsons, Austin Irwin and Bryce Irwin; special friend and companion of 20 years, Sandy Helling; sisters, Janet Beaty and Rosemary Touhey Stewart; many nieces and nephews; and honorary son, Scott Davis.

He was preceded in death by his parents Wilfred and Francis; three siblings, Mary Davis, Larry Beaty and Carolyn Hamilton; and his dog, Gunner.

Brian Emery Blankenburg,&nbsp;71, of Donnellson, Iowa, passed away on Sunday, July 20, 2025, at Birkwood Village in Fort Madison, Iowa.

He was born on October 31, 1953, in Keokuk, Iowa, the son of Donald Lee and Alvera Bell Bentzinger Blankenburg.

He is survived by his brother: Evan (Jan) Blankenburg.

Brian graduated from Iowa Wesleyan University and worked as a pharmacy technician at HyVee until his retirement. He enjoyed baseball and was an avid New York Yankees fan and an avid collector.

His body has been entrusted to the crematory of Schmitz Funeral Homes for cremation.

A visitation will be held from 12:00 noon to 6:30 p.m. Thursday, July 24, 2025, at Schmitz Funeral Home in Donnellson, where the family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

Born on September 21, 1950, in Burlington, Iowa, Darwin was the son of Charles and Leona (Wirt) Cooley.&nbsp;

Darwin was a 1968 graduate of Burlington High School and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy from the University of Iowa in 1974. He was a dedicated pharmacist who had many professional achievements and impactful contributions serving as the Director of Pharmacy at Great River Medical Center for 46 years.&nbsp;

Beyond his professional achievements, Darwin found joy in the simple pleasures of life. He loved spending time outdoors gardening, fishing, golfing, or just relaxing in nature.&nbsp; He was a member of Carthage Lake Club where he spent lots of time hanging out with friends and family, sharing stories and enjoying the outdoors.&nbsp; His lifelong dedication to bowling was reflected in numerous accomplishments and a cherished circle of friends.&nbsp; Dar was a fan of the St. Louis Cardinals, making many road trips to St. Louis with his son and friends.&nbsp;

He was an excellent cook and loved making food for his family, friends, and coworkers.&nbsp; On several occasions, he would make a gourmet meal for those working Thanksgiving at the hospital.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Darwin was a generous man and a proud father and grandfather. He loved spending time with his children and granddaughters, and it brought him great joy watching them grow up.&nbsp;Darwin is survived by his children, Adam Cooley and Lisa (Chad) Lambi; and his beloved granddaughters, Ella and Paige. Kelsey Lou Orth, 20, of Burlington, died Friday, July 18, 2025. Born July 8, 2005, in West Burlington, she was the daughter of Daren and Amie McDaniels Orth. &nbsp; She was a 2024 graduate of Burlington Notre Dame High School and was enrolled to study nursing at Southeastern Community College. She had recently received her CNA Certificate. Kelsey had been working for Panera since she was 16 years old. She never liked getting up that early to go to work but she always enjoyed being there, she had built up quite a following of morning regulars who dined there and always greeted them with a smile. Kelsey was a vibrant and fearless young woman who brought light and joy to those around her. She was of Catholic faith and was a member of Divine Mercy Parish. She had a bold, spirited personality that showed in everything she did, whether taking selfies, or dancing and singing to her favorite songs - she fully embraced the moment. She loved expressing herself through tattoos and piercings and enjoyed tanning. Her beloved dog, Jack held a special place in her heart. She had a natural softness for animals of all kinds, showing them the same kindness and compassion she extended to everyone she met. Friends and family knew her as someone who was always kind and caring. She enjoyed the quiet focus of puzzles and fidget toys and found beauty in the simple things-especially butterflies and flowers. Her fearlessness, creativity, and gentle soul will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her. Survivors include her loving parents, Daren and Amie Orth of Burlington; siblings: Lexie (Tanner) Reisen, Madison (Marcus Johnson) Orth, Jaylen Orth, Christian (Erin Fry) Orth, Kallee (Bryce Britton) Orth, and Kellissa (Jayden Kirby) Orth; maternal grandfather, Ed McDaniels of Farmington, MO; nieces and nephews: Lillian, Benjamin, Ellie, Adam, Malakai, Carson and Kane (due in September); and many extended family members and friends. Kelsey Orth

Vaughn L. Moore, 79, of West Burlington, died Monday, July 21, 2025, at home. Born December 16, 1945, in Ottumwa, Iowa, he was the son of Vaughn P. and Helen Elaine Moore.

He was a 1965 graduate of Ottumwa High School and served in the Army.

He married Patricia “Patty” Keen on June 12, 1965 in Ottumwa, she preceded him in death on July 23, 2021.

Vaughn began his working career helping paint houses and rooftops with his uncle.&nbsp; He then continued on with employment with the Atomic Energy Commission, First Miss, West Burlington Police Department., where he was known fondly to the kids as the bubble gum cop, Burlington Mobile Home Sales, Century Homes on Highway 61, Vista Bakery and finally as a volunteer for the 34 Truckstop.

He loved motorcycles, racing them as a teenager; bow fishing and hunting.&nbsp; But most importantly he was known to have a house that was a safe haven for all of his children and their friends, offering a place to stay and security for all.

Survivors include his children; Lester Moore and Vona (John) Vernoy; honorary daughters Melinda (Rick) Belville and Laura (Brian) Holt along with 15 foster children; 26 grandchildren; three great grand children and sister Renee Hartley.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Patty, two brothers Jerry Moore and Paul Moore, sister Sharon Lentner and a sister in infancy Patricia Lynn Moore.

According to his wishes, cremation has been entrusted to Lunning Chapel.&nbsp; There will be no services.&nbsp; If you feel inclined, the family has asked for a tree to be planted in his memory.

Donna Jo Anne Baxter, 99, of Stronghurst, Ill., passed away at 8:20 a.m. on her 99th birthday, July 22, 2025, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in West Burlington, Iowa.&nbsp;

Jo Anne was born July 22, 1926, in Bonaparte, Iowa, the daughter of Roger and Winona (Story) Hornbaker. On December 14, 1946, she married the love of her life, Harry A. Baxter, in Fort Madison, Iowa. He preceded her in death December 16, 1990.&nbsp; Jo Anne was raised and educated in Bonaparte, where she graduated as valedictorian of her class. Following high school, she received her teaching certificate from the former Parsons College in Fairfield, Iowa. She taught at a one room school in Van Buren County. After their marriage, she and Harry started their family and lived in Fort Madison, Iowa until they relocated to Stronghurst in 1961. She helped him run Baxter Progas where the family met many extraordinary people from the Hancock and Henderson County area. She always felt truly blessed to have raised a family and have had a business in this community. Jo Anne loved her Catholic faith, finding great peace in the celebration of the Mass and participating in the Sacraments. She was a teacher at heart and simply taught by the way she lived her life up until the day she went Home. Besides her faith, her greatest gift from God was her family,&nbsp; who very often filled her home with laughter. Betty L. Ward, 78, of Burlington, died Tuesday, July 22, 2025, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born April 5, 1947, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Clarence and Bertha Lack. She married Larry Scott. He he preceded her in death on August 17, 1992.&nbsp; She then married Raymond Ward on June 30, 2012, at the Unitarian Fellowship.

Betty worked at ParkView Care Center for several years until her retirement.

She loved oil painting and was an amazing artist.&nbsp; She loved playing bingo and for years she, along with Ray wintered in Texas and Betty became the entertainment committee for her retirement park.&nbsp; Above all things, her greatest joy was harassing “Hazel”.

She is survived by her husband Ray Ward; children, Roger Dean (Amanda), David Allen, Chadwick Daniel and Bradley Douglas (Wendy); stepchildren, Robert (Dana), Donald, Michelle (Frank), Heather, Chris (Felice) and Michael; several grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband Larry, stepdaughters Tammy and Tina, brother Richard and sister Dixie.

The graveside memorial service and burial for Betty will be 2:00 p.m. Monday, July 28th at Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery. Mr. Richard Johnson will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Des Moines County Humane Society.

According to her wishes, cremation has been entrusted to the care of Lunning Chapel.

Philip Lee “Phil” Getchell, 85, of rural West Burlington, died Monday, July 21, 2025, at his home surrounded by family.

Born February 7, 1940, in Mount Pleasant, Iowa, he was the son of Harold Wayne and Mary Evangeline Getchell.&nbsp; He was a 1958 graduate of Burlington High School.

He married Marjorie D. Stigge on September 19, 1959, at the Prairie Grove Church.

Phil was a lifelong farmer and for the past several years did so alongside his son.&nbsp; He worked for Modern Welding for 34 years, served as a Reserve Deputy for the Des Moines County Sheriff’s Department for 15 years, drove the school bus for Danville Schools for 11 years and worked at 34 Raceway for many years pumping fuel for cars.

He was a member of Peace Lutheran Church.

He enjoyed restoring antique tractors, hunting, fishing and of course farming.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Marjorie Getchell; son Dave (Jennifer) Getchell; daughter Kayleen (Brad) Mehaffy; four grandchildren, Damian (Jordan) Getchell, Chris (Erin) Mehaffy, Nick (Crystal) Mehaffy, Kimberly (Dylan) Graham, Shelby Tolle and Savannah Dowell; nine great grandchildren and brother Melvin (Judy) Getchell.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Wanda Waterman and Sharon Getchell and daughter-in-law Rosalie Getchell.

Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., Sunday, July 27th, at Lunning Chapel where the family will receive friends.&nbsp; The funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 28th at Peace Lutheran Church.&nbsp; Pastor James Zuehls will officiate.&nbsp; Burial will follow at Prairie Grove Cemetery, rural West Burlington.

She was born on March 26, 1944, in Fort Madison, Iowa, the daughter of Earl and Bernice Gray Schlicher. On November 28, 1964, she married Richard Wood in Donnellson, Iowa.

She is survived by her husband: Richard; two children: Sheri (Drew) McCarthy of Burlington, Iowa, Jody (Jaime) Wood of Fort Madison; six grandchildren: Beth (Andrew) Ita, J.T. (Heather) McCarthy, Jarrett (Morgan) Sykes, Mackenzie (John) Corvaia, Karrigen (Ruger) Smith, Bryce Wood; great grandchildren: Peyton McCarthy, Jensen Sykes, Harper Corvaia, Reece McCarthy, Keegan Sykes and two on the way. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; son: Terry; brother: Jerry Schlicher and sister-in-law: Judy Schlicher.

Patti was a 1962 graduate of Central Lee High School. She and her husband owned and operated Wood Standard Service in Donnellson for over forty years. She was a member of the Donnellson Presbyterian Church. Patti enjoyed sports, as she was an avid Iowa Hawkeye, Southeastern Community College and St. Louis Cardinal fan. Most of all she enjoyed watching her son race and going to families sporting events.

Her body has been entrusted to the crematory of Schmitz Funeral Home for cremation.

A celebration of life will be held from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Sunday, August 3, 2025, at Green Acres Golf Club in Donnellson, Iowa.

Leonard Abraham Hogan, 91, of Niota, Ill., passed away on Sunday, July 20, 2025.&nbsp; He was born on Sept. 15, 1933, the son of Ambrose &amp; Emeline Moore Hogan.&nbsp; He was born and died in the same house on the family farm outside of Niota, Ill.

He is survived by one brother: Patrick “PJ” Hogan of Ft. Madison, two sisters-in-law: Carol Hogan of Eufaula, Ala., Linda (Gene) McEntee of Nauvoo, IL; eleven nieces and nephews that were like children to him: Ron (Amy) Hogan of Ellisville, MO, Don (Jeanne) Hogan of Nauvoo, IL, Judy (Patrick) Hayes of Niota, IL, Tim Hogan of Cape Girardeau, MO, Donna (Kevin) Gross of Jackson, MO, Susan (Tom) Walljasper of Ft. Madison, IA, Debra (Jim) Hurt of Augusta, IL, Brenda (Jeff) Lowman of Nauvoo, IL, Bridgitt (Jerry) Hutson of Niota, IL, Tom (Carla) McEntee of Dallas City, IL, Amy (Matt) Shanks of Ankeny, IA; and numerous cousins and great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers: Ronald “Doc”, Richard “Rip” and David; three sisters-in-law, Joan, Freda, and Marta; one brother-in-law, Earl Varnadore; one nephew-in-law, Matt Hutson; and one great nephew, Thomas Walljasper. Leonard attended the Crescent one-room school outside of Niota, then St, Joseph’s Catholic School.&nbsp; He graduated from St. Joseph's High School in Fort Madison in 1951.&nbsp; He then attended Quincy College until he was drafted into the Army in June of 1953.&nbsp; The Korean War ended when he was in basic training, so after basic, he went to map compiling school in Fort Belvoir, Virginia, and then on to Germany, where he was assigned to the 332nd engineer topography company.&nbsp; He was discharged in 1955 and went to work for the state of Illinois for about 7 years, giving driver's license tests. Then he went back to Quincy College for a year and a half and was able to get a job at the State Bank of Nauvoo where he worked for nearly 30 years.&nbsp; &nbsp;Except for the few years of college and his time in the army, Leonard lived his life on the family farm. He was an avid St. Louis Cardinal fan, a lifelong Iowa Hawkeye fan, and an avid supporter of Western Illinois Leathernecks.&nbsp; One of his favorite pastimes was flying.&nbsp; &nbsp;In the early 1980s, he and his brother Richard learned to fly and bought a small airplane.&nbsp; He also enjoyed boating, having taken a small boat to St. Louis and back. But he got the most enjoyment spending time with family and friends.

Richard R. Cromer, 82, of Burlington, died Saturday, July 19, 2025, at his home. Born March 28, 1943, in Macomb, Ill., he was the son of Estle Dale and Virginia Eileen Sparrow Cromer. In August 1963, he married LaNee Jean Yocum, they later divorced in 1981. In 1983, he married Roberta Wilkerson, they divorced in 1993. On July 21, 1995, he married Dorothy "Dottie" Ann Davidson in Keokuk.

Mr. Cromer was a lifelong truck driver, accumulating over three million miles, with no chargeable accidents. He retired in 2009.

He graduated from Colchester, Ill. High School in 1961.&nbsp;

Richard was a member of the Burlington Valley Duster Motorcycle Club, Skiowans, Teamster Local 218, Moose Lodge, and a life member of the American Motorcycle Association.&nbsp;

Mr. Cromer enjoyed racing dirt bikes, snow skiing and playing golf. His "claim to fame" was winning first overall in seasonal points in both enduros and hare scrambles in the state of Iowa in 1978. Richard enjoyed watching SCC basketball, WB Notre Dame track meets and motorcycle racing on TV.&nbsp;

Survivors include wife, Dottie Cromer of Burlington; one son, David (Theresa) Cromer of West Burlington; one daughter, Kellie (Jeff) Sloan of Mount Pleasant; three grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; two step-daughters, Karla Saar of Cedar Rapids and Debra (Brad) Bigelow of Apopka, Fla., one step-son, Tony (Sherry) Malone of Eldon; six step-grandchildren; one brother, Dale Cromer of Plymouth, Ill.; one niece; four nephews; and several step great-grandchildren.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, one sister, and one niece.&nbsp;

Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m., Saturday, July 26, 2025, at Prugh Funeral Service, 3940 Division Street.

Calvin Edwin Pearsall, 94, formerly of Salem, Oregon, died Tuesday, July 15, 2025, at Addington Place in Burlington.

Born Aug.&nbsp; 3, 1930, in Elsmere, Neb., he was the son of Howard and Helen Addis Pearsall. On Aug. 1, 1950, he married Jeanette A. Sullivan in First Baptist Church in Salem, Ore.. They shared a loving marriage and were just weeks away from celebrating their 75th wedding anniversary.

Calvin graduated from Salem High School and spent his early years working as a shoe salesman. He later took a job at a lumber yard, where he built doors then he drove a truck delivering building supplies across the pacific northwest. He became best known for his work in the construction field, where he spent many years building and remodeling homes.

A long-time member of the First Baptist Church in Salem, Calvin served on the Property Committee, as a Deacon, and helped maintain the church grounds and facilities. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved spending time hunting, fishing, and camping with his family. When he wasn’t outdoors, he could often be found in his woodworking shop, pursuing his passion for craftsmanship.

Survivors include his wife, Jeanette A. Pearsall of Burlington; daughter, Diana (Dave) Cretsinger of Mount Pleasant; three grandchildren, Alex, Amy and Aubrey; six great-grandchildren, Paisley, Ryder, Charlotte, Jaxon, Kipton and Hazel; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter, Jan Wink, brother, Robert Pearsall and sister, Shirley Vogel.&nbsp;

Born February 25, 1944, in Burlington, he was the son of Arthur Melvin and Meta C. Wiele Miller. On April 25, 1964, he married Diana Marie Timmerman in Oquawka, Ill. She died on November 20, 2021. Throughout his life, Don worked as a mechanic at Mauthes Garage where he spent about 14 years before opening his own business, Miller Auto Salvage. In addition to his work as a mechanic, he also drove a semi and earned a certificate to transport wind turbines. A passionate racing fan, Don loved spending time at 34 Raceway, where he not only watched the races but also participated, winning many trophies over the years. He also enjoyed trying his luck, whether it was playing Powerball or scratch-off tickets. Survivors include four children, Donna (Kathy Pugliese) Miller of Burlington, Larry (Kim Siefken) Miller of Burlington, Ginny (Cody) Atchley of Danville, and Meta Miller Dixon of Burlington; eleven grandchildren, Patrick, Rachel (Jerod), Brett (Hannah), Bailey (Elizabeth, Kylee (J.T.), Colton, Carah, Calob, Julie, Duane and Drew; 13 great-grandchildren, Eric, Ellie, Elisha, Jameson, Dean, Lorelei, Zahcari, Laylani, Haley, Justin, Aubree, Zane and Averi; and brother, Arthur (Lucille) Miller of Denmark. Roberta Lee Smith, 77, of Burlington, died Friday, July 18, 2025, surrounded by her loved ones at the Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born on Dec. 18, 1947, she was the daughter of Harry A. and Ruby L. Nelson Hopson.

She is survived by her loving husband, Mike Smith, of 25 years, her daughter Angela Wilkerson of Donnellson, Iowa, grandchildren: Jerry, Drew, Samantha (Dustin Walljasper), Alex, Danny, Caleb, Lily and Adeline; four great grandchildren: Axton, Meika, Brantley and Ryker; stepdaughter Breanna Smith, stepson Jason Smith; sisters in-law: Pam Hollister and Darlene Smith. She was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved son Chris Wilkerson, two brothers Lloyd and Jerry Hopson and one brother in-law Bill Smith.

Roberta began her real estate career working for Century 21, Canfield Blacksmith and Swander and for Mosley and Associates. She then worked for many years as a mortgage loan officer in the Quad Cities. She was a rental property owner and a Southeast Iowa Property Owners member. She was exceptionally smart and always very hardworking.

Roberta had many close friends that she spent time getting together with weekly for lunches and dinners. She enjoyed attending many concerts and events, especially Broadway musical performances at the Des Moines and Peoria Civic Centers. She also enjoyed vacations with her husband, going to the movies with her daughter and attending many various activities with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

She loved horses and all animals especially her two cats “Chloe” and “Snoopy” (who she named after her love of Charlie Brown’s dog) and also her beloved cats that had already crossed over the rainbow bridge, “Bob” and “Boo”. She was a strong supporter of the World Wildlife Federation, 4Ocean, and was an organ donor.

“Bert” will be deeply missed by everyone who knew and loved her.

The funeral service for Roberta will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, July 25, 2025, at Lunning Chapel with Darlene Smith officiating. A one-hour visitation will be held prior to the service at 10:00 a.m. at Lunning Chapel where the family will meet with friends. Interment will be held in Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery.

A memorial has been established in her memory for Des Moines County Humane Society or VFW of Burlington.

Roberta Lee "Bert" Smith

Mary Kristina "Kris" Rinker, 72, of West Burlington, died Monday, July 14, 2025, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in West Burlington.

Born March 25, 1953, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Charles and Antoinnette Bentler Eggleston. She married George Rinker on August 21, 1981 in Burlington, and together they had four children before eventually separating.

She was a graduate of Burlington High School.

Kris began her career as a bookkeeper at Burlington Bank and Trust. After the birth of her son, Jacob, she chose to stay home and dedicate herself to care for him. Later, she returned to the workforce as an operator at Champion Spark Plug, where she worked for over 15 years before retiring. Kris had a passion for baking and spent 20 years running her own cake business, crafting everything from classic cakes to intricate creations.&nbsp;

In her younger years, she enjoyed bowling and was quite the enthusiast. In her downtime, she loved watching I Love Lucy and Gilmore Girls, two of her favorite shows. She also enjoyed car rides with the windows down, traveling to new places, and treating herself to an ice cream cone. Her vibrant spirit lit up every party and event she attended. But above all, her greatest joy came from raising her children and later helping care for her beloved grandchildren.

Survivors include three children, Matthew (Sophie) Rinker of Burlington, Lucas (Marie) Rinker of Sandusky, Ohio, and Sarah Rinker of Raleigh, N.C.; seven grandchildren, Elin, Aydan, Olivia, Jacob, Tristan, Lillian, and Emma; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Jacob Rinker; one granddaughter, Mia Rinker; two brothers, Tom Eggleston and Jerry Eggleston; and one sister, Judy Mosena.

Visitation will be from noon until 7 p.m., with the family to receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, July 21, 2025, at Prugh Funeral Service, 3940 Division Street.

The Funeral Mass of the Resurrection for Kris Rinker will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 22, 2025, at Divine Mercy Parish-St. John the Baptist Catholic Church with Fr. Jake Greiner as the Celebrant. &nbsp;Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery.

Mary "Kris" Rinker

Bette Louise Tarrence, 77, of Burlington, died Friday, July 18, 2025, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in West Burlington.

Born June 15, 1948, in Mt. Pleasant, she was the daughter of Philip Ellworth and Florence Lucille Henessee Seager. On May 25, 1968, she married Duane Tarrence at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in Mt. Pleasant.&nbsp;

A 1967 graduate of Mt. Pleasant High School, Bette was an active member of the school band throughout her time there. Over the years, she worked as a secretary for various businesses until her retirement.

Bette was a devoted member of St. Alphonsus Catholic Church. She enjoyed playing Bingo, visiting the casino, and most of all, spending time with her family and friends. She was a dedicated grandmother, always cheering for her grandchildren at their sporting events.

Survivors include her husband, Duane Tarrence of Burlington; two children, Chad (Gina) Tarrence of Burlington, and Carie (Jason) Edwards of New London; three grandchildren, Mikaela, Chance, and Cason, two sisters, Connie Rheinschmidt of Middletown, and Tresea (John) Swan of Olathe, KS; two brothers-in-law, Dale (Cindy) Tarrence of Mt Pleasant, and Dennis Tarrence of NC, and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brother, Robert Seager, two brothers-in-law, John "Gil" Rheinschmidt and Darrell Tarrence.

Memorials have been established for Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice and Special Needs Foundation.
