Amy Lyn Schier, 55, of Mediapolis, died Friday, October 9, 2026, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in West Burlington, surrounded by the love of her family. After four long years of showing unimaginable strength, courage, and determination, Amy Schier has finally won her battle with ALS. While ALS may have taken away so much, it never took away her fighting spirit, her love for those around her, or the beautiful person she was. She fought with a strength that inspired everyone who knew her, and now she is finally free from the body that held her back for so long. Her fight is over, and she is at peace. Amy was a loving wife to her husband, Dan Schier, and a devoted mother and grandmother. Her family was her whole world, and nothing brought her more happiness than the people she loved most. She leaves behind her daughter, Kayla (Joseph) Nichols, and her cherished grandchildren, Triston, Clara, and Kora, along with a precious granddaughter on the way. She also leaves behind her son, Blake (Brittany) Schier, and her beloved grandchildren, Charli and Bowden. Each of them held a special place in her heart, and the love she had for her family was endless. Amy had a special way of making the little things in life feel beautiful. She loved spending time at the cabin, surrounded by the peaceful sounds of birds, tending to her plants, and simply enjoying the beauty of the river. She found happiness in those quiet moments, especially when she could share them with the people she loved. Her sweet dog, Molly, was another special part of her life and brought her so much comfort and joy. One of Amy’s greatest blessings was the incredible friendships she had throughout her life. She was surrounded by the very best friends, who became some of her biggest supporters during her battle with ALS. They stood beside her, loved her, lifted her up, and never let her face the hardest days alone. Their unwavering love and friendship meant more than words could ever express. Amy will be remembered for her incredible strength, her love for her family and friends, and the courage she showed even on the hardest days. She taught those around her what it truly means to be strong, to keep fighting, and to find beauty in life even when life isn’t fair. Although our hearts are broken, we find comfort in knowing that Amy is no longer fighting. ALS did not win. Amy did. She is finally free, finally at peace, and forever surrounded by love. And whenever we hear the birds singing, see flowers blooming, or spend a quiet day at the cabin, we will be reminded of her. Her battle is over, but her love will live on forever. A celebration of Amy's life will be held at a later date. Prugh Funeral Service is in care of the arrangements.

Amy Lyn Schier

Loyd Ward Jr., lovingly known as Dutch, age 66, passed away peacefully at his home in Apache, Oklahoma, on Tuesday, September 29, 2026.

Dutch was born on July 13, 1960, in Anthony, Kansas, to Loyd Ward Sr. and Joyce Ward. His mother, Joyce, survives him.

On December 31, 2005 Dutch married his devoted wife of more than 20 years, Brenda Nichols, who survives him.

Other survivors include his two sons, David (Anne) Ward and Jason Ward, of Burlington, Iowa; and his daughter, Kellie Ward, of Charleston, West Virginia.

He leaves behind his beloved grandchildren: Anthony Ward, Lucas Ward, Aaliyah Nupp, Iva Sams, David Ward Jr., Nicolas Ward, Jason Ward Jr., Nevaeh Ita, Frannie Ward, and Willow Ward, all of Burlington, Iowa.

Dutch was also a loving bonus father to his two stepchildren, Gary (Kelly) Osborn and Brooklyn (Mike) Lick, and grandfather to Mickayla, Micky, Naddy, Bailey, Gage, and Mika of Muscatine, Iowa.

He is also survived by his two sisters, Robin Jones and Anita Ward, of Lawton, Oklahoma; and his brother, James (Rachel) Ward, of Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Dutch spent his lifetime behind the wheel of an 18-wheeler, building a career that spanned nearly 50 years. On September 8, 2025, he finally blew the horn one last time and retired from Evans Transportation, hanging up his CB handle, “Porkchop,” and closing a remarkable chapter of life on the open road.

When Dutch wasn’t behind the steering wheel, he could often be found fishing along the riverbank, trying to drown a few worms, or cheering on his beloved University of Oklahoma Sooners. An avid OU football and softball fan, he treasured attending games with his wife and friends, proudly cheering, “Boomer Sooner!”

Dutch appreciated life’s simple pleasures: a fat grilled steak, time spent with loved ones, cracking jokes, loving on his four fur babies, and listening to classic rock and roll.

He had a generous heart and was always willing to lend a helping hand whenever he could. His humor, loyalty, and love for his family and friends will be remembered by all who knew him.

One of the most meaningful moments in Dutch’s final chapter was his public proclamation of faith in the Lord Jesus Christ through baptism on September 13, 2026.

This precious milestone will forever hold a special place in the hearts of those who loved him. His faith and the memories shared with him will remain part of his family’s story for generations to come.

Dutch was preceded in death by his father, Loyd Ward Sr., and his grandson, James Michael Nupp Jr.

In accordance with Dutch’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A private celebration of life will be held by the family at a later date.

Though Dutch has taken his final drive on this earthly road, his journey, laughter, stories, and love will live on in the hearts of those he leaves behind.

Ruth Ann Bennett, beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, died Wednesday, July 15, 2026, in Topeka, Kan., her home for the past several years. She was 84. Born Jan. 3, 1942 (the first baby of the year in Burlington), Ruth Ann and her sister, Barbara, were raised in Burlington by their grandmother, Charlotte (née Schmitz) Bertlshofer Newquist. Ruth Ann married Gary Nelson Bennett on Feb. 3, 1962, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Burlington. Gary died on Jan. 26, 2002, eight days shy of their 40thwedding anniversary. Gary and Ruth Ann had two daughters, Dena (Edward Jr.) Sattler of Topeka, and Christina Bennett of Washington, D.C.; two granddaughters, Elizabeth (Mitchell) Khader and Emma Lynch, both of Washington; and a great-granddaughter, Charlotte Khader of Washington. Ruth Ann fiercely loved her family and always put their needs first. Most important to her were her roles as mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother to her girls, whose achievements made her so very proud. Known for her extraordinary beauty inside and out, Ruth Ann touched countless lives through her work and volunteerism. Her life was a master class in making people feel beautiful, happy, and loved. She was a 1959 graduate of Burlington High School, a cheerleader and High Stepper for the Grayhounds, and in 1961 was crowned Miss Burlington due to her exceptional talent (dancing), charm, and beauty. Before her marriage, Ruth Ann worked in Burlington at the Harrison House and other restaurants, Schramm’s department store, and Burlington Lithograph/Delta Press. She also taught dance at the Hazel-Mack Studio. Ruth Ann later achieved local, state, and national recognition as the longtime Clinique counter manager at Younkers in Westland Mall. Memories of the “Clinique lady” known for her professional, caring, and heartfelt attention to their makeup and skin care needs carry on to this day as customers recall how she made them feel happy and confident. She was a trusted and respected consultant for weddings, proms, and many other special occasions. Ruth Ann was honored in New York as one of Clinique’s first national Clinique Stars, an honor given to a select few Clinique consultants for overall excellence. Along with seeking her help at the Clinique counter, many of Ruth Ann’s customers also sought her advice on their wardrobe. She always helped them find just the right style, another reason she was honored as a Hall of Fame Associate at Younkers. Ruth Ann was a faithful guiding light for her family and many others. A devout Catholic, she proudly served as a Eucharist minister in her hometown and especially enjoyed visiting local senior care facilities to share the Eucharist and pray the Rosary. She attended St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Burlington for many years and later St. Matthew Catholic Church in Topeka. A true Renaissance woman, Ruth Ann had a wide variety of talents and interests. She was a club champion at Burlington Golf Club (1976 and 1978) and won numerous other golf titles. She was Burlington’s Bowler of the Year in 1972. She and Gary were always competitive in team bowling and couples golf, along with winning father-daughter and mother-daughter golf tournaments with Dena and Christina. A gifted artist with a flair for creativity, Ruth Ann was an excellent seamstress who made clothes, quilts, and other keepsakes over the years for her family and fundraisers. She was instrumental in the success of the Mercy Hospital gift shop and its charitable events. Always focused on her daughters’ activities, Ruth Ann helped coach their youth softball teams and was a Brownie-Girl Scout leader. She loved nature and visited zoos throughout the nation with her girls. Her love of the outdoors included fishing, and she caught trophy fish in the Atlantic Ocean, Mississippi River, and lakes in Kansas. Ruth Ann and family also enjoyed numerous musicals and travels throughout the country and beyond. Ruth Ann passed on her green thumb to her girls, who now have flowers or plants she nurtured, as well as her fantastic recipes for homemade spaghetti and birthday cake. Ruth Ann studied and enthusiastically discussed issues of the day with an emphasis on charity, decency, and truth. She was a passionate and knowledgeable sports fan, starting with her girls’ participation in youth, high school, and college athletics. A diehard supporter of the Iowa Hawkeyes, Chicago Cubs, Chicago Bears, and Kansas City Chiefs, Ruth Ann rarely missed watching high-profile sports events. She owned multiple fantasy football teams each year and won prizes in her first leagues. She also enjoyed visiting casinos, playing mahjong and Words with Friends, and was a true classic movie connoisseur. Her pet dogs over the years — especially her much-loved standard poodle, Wrigley — held a special place in her heart. Ruth Ann was exceptionally tough and wanted family and friends to know she always tried to get stronger. After surviving lung cancer more than three decades ago, she handled ongoing health issues with courage as she literally built her life around spending quality time with her girls, whether in person or on FaceTime. Ruth Ann summed this up when she was featured in a January 2018 “52 Faces” article in The Hawk Eye: “The realization you might not be around that much longer gives you a real sense of urgency with your loved ones. You want to be around them all the time, and you can’t stand any separation.” Dena, Christina, Elizabeth, and Emma were at Ruth Ann’s side as she left this world to begin her eternal life with God. Per Ruth Ann’s wishes, her cremated remains will be laid to rest with her husband in a private graveside committal service at Aspen Grove Cemetery. Deacon Gary Johnson will preside over the Rite of Committal. The family will meet with friends from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 6, at Burlington Golf Club. Afterward, a tree will be planted in Ruth Ann’s memory on hole No. 18 at BGC, where she finished so many rounds of golf, and near the family home, where she watched her young daughters play golf and enjoy sledding when winter arrived. A tree honoring Gary stands on the same hole at BGC. Memorials are established for the Divine Mercy Parish Improvements and the Divine Mercy Parish Ministry of Care and may be sent to the Divine Mercy Parish office at 502 W. Mount Pleasant St., West Burlington, Iowa, 52655.

Steven B. (Bernard) “Steve” Thompson, 69, of Kansas City, Missouri, formerly of West Point, Iowa, passed away on Sunday, September 13, 2026, at his home after living with ALS for three years, while never failing to sport a smile.

He was born on May 29, 1957, in Fort Madison, Iowa, the son of Clyde A. and Florence D. (Menke) Thompson. On November 14, 1981, he married Deborah J. Mueller at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Houghton, Iowa.

Survivors include his wife: Deb, of Kansas City; son: Deren (Amy) Thompson of Kansas City; grandchildren: Zachary, Paige and Charlie; mother: Florence Thompson of Donnellson, Iowa; siblings: Gary (Gale) Thompson of Houghton, Iowa; Darrell (Carrie Westcott) Thompson of Donnellson, Iowa and Lora Roth of Donnellson, Iowa; sister-in-law: Cathy Mueller of Corvallis, Oregon. Also surviving are aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father: Clyde; brother: Richard; brothers-in-law: Les Roth and Jeffrey Mueller; parents-in-law: Kenneth and Betty Mueller.

Steve was a 1975 Marquette High School graduate, leaving college in 1976 to join the family agri-business. His second career was as a licensed commercial journeyman electrician, a profession he pursued for twenty-five years. Following his retirement in 2022, Steve and Deb relocated to Kansas City, Missouri, to be near their son and his family, where Steve pursued his third and favorite career as grandfather.

A man of strong faith, Steve was a member of St. James Catholic Church in Liberty, Missouri, and formerly St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, where he was a choir member. He was a member of the Houghton Knights of Columbus and a former twelve-year Marquette School Board member.

Steve especially enjoyed time spent with his family, for whom he was always ready to lend a helping hand. He will be remembered for his strong work ethic, his ability to hold a conversation with anyone he met, his years of volunteering at Marquette Schools, his way with a barbecue grill and his appreciation for classic cars—a love passed down through a couple of generations. Steve was always up for a scenic road trip through the countryside and if it just happened to end at a winery, brewery or ice cream parlor, so be it.

During his journey, Steve participated in every ALS research study his energy allowed him to manage. The Speech Accessibility Project, jointly funded by Amazon, Apple, Google, Meta and Microsoft, was designed to make speech recognition tools more accessible for people with diverse voices caused by five specific diseases, including ALS. Steve remained committed to helping researchers find a cure and one of his final gifts was to the University of Miami Brain Endowment Bank.

A visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 30, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Houghton, where the family will receive friends from 4:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. A Christian wake service will be held at 6:00 p.m.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, October 1, 2026, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Houghton with Father Dan Dorau as celebrant.

Burial will be at St. John’s Cemetery in Houghton. Following the burial, a luncheon will be held at Houghton Knights of Columbus.

In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established in his memory to St. John’s Catholic Church, Holy Trinity Schools, and the Team Gleason Foundation. Team Gleason was instrumental in improving Steve’s life and the lives of those around him by loaning him a portable power chair and helping to bank his voice before it was lost, allowing us to continue to hear his words. Team Gleason helps people with the large financial and emotional burdens that come with ALS. Until there is a cure for ALS, there is Team Gleason.
