Wilma Schau,&nbsp;96, of Primrose, passed away Saturday Nov. 9, 2024, at River Valley Place Fort Madison.&nbsp;

She was born February 28, 1928, in the Donnellson vicinity. She was the daughter of Lester and Iola Bonn Lang. On April 11, 1948, she married Forrest Schau at the Zion United Church of Christ in Primrose. He preceded her in death on June 3, 2012.

Survivors include her daughter: Nancy (Bob) McCleary of New London; son: Leon (Barb) Schau of Primrose Iowa, and daughter: Rebecca (Stephen) Hassman of Primrose Iowa; six grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren: Julie (Josh) Shimken-Hassman and great-grandson: Luca; Christa (Jeff) Pietrzyk and great-grandsons: Tate, Rhet and Chase; Ben (April) Hassman and great-grandchildren: Payton, Bryer and Madison; Brian McCleary and great-grandchildren: Brice and Chloe; Hannah (Jared) Lupkes and great-grandchildren: Nora and Beau; Emma (Josh) Wade and great-grandchildren: Ben, Eleanor, and Wren.&nbsp;

She was preceded in death by her husband and parents. &nbsp;

Wilma was a member of the Sharon Presbyterian Church and the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 474 of Donnellson. Wilma enjoyed playing bridge, sewing, taking care of her family, and traveling. She most recently enjoyed spending time with her great-grandchildren. &nbsp;

As per her wishes her body has been entrusted to the crematory of Schmitz Funeral Home.

A family grave side service will be held at a later date at the Primrose Cemetery.&nbsp;

Dixie Gillis , 78, of West Burlington, died Nov. 19, 2024 at her home, surrounded by family.

Born Nov. 24, 1945, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Milford Dowell and Helen Bernice Likely Dowell. On May 12, 1962, she married Robert Earl Gillis in Kahoka, Mo.

She was a childcare provider for many friends and family prior to attending college. &nbsp;She graduated in 1976 from Southeastern Community College with her associates degree as a registered nurse and became certified as a Psychiatric and Mental Health Nurse in 1991.

Her hobbies include gardening, garage sales, and cross stitching. &nbsp;She was a den mother and president of the Burlington YMCA Swim Team. &nbsp;She was a member of West Hill United Methodist Church.

Dixie and her husband enjoyed traveling abroad to Germany, down the Rhine and Danube Rivers, and several Mediterranean and Caribbean cruises.

survivors include her husband, Robert Earl Gillis of West Burlington; one son, Scott (Shelley) Gillis of Burlington; two daughters, Robin (Royce) Hardesty of St. Peters, Mo., and Angie (Steve) Deggendorf of Danville; seven grandchildren, Cristi Smith, Kyle Gillis, Lane Gillis, Taylor Deggendorf, Josh Deggendorf, Mikaela Hardesty, and Elise Hardesty-Irvin; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Trudi Lefler of Stronghurst, Ill., and Kay Anderson of Burlington.

Visitation will be Friday, Nov. 22, 2024, from 12 noon to 6 p.m. with the family to receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m., at Prugh Funeral Service (3940 Division St.).

The funeral service for Dixie will be 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 23, 2024 at Prugh Funeral Service with Pastor Kathy Moore officiating, and Rev. Tammi Wirt assisting. &nbsp;A time of food and fellowship will be held in the community room at Prugh Funeral Service following the service. &nbsp;Dixie will be laid to rest at Carman Cemetery following the luncheon.

Memorials have been established for the West Hill United Methodist Church and the Animal Shelter.

John Robert McBride,&nbsp;70, of Nauvoo, Ill., died Monday, Nov. 18, 2024.&nbsp; He was born on Feb. 8, 1954, at Sacred Heart Hospital in Fort Madison, the son of John Stephen and Gloria Jeanne McLain McBride.

A Nauvoo-Colusa graduate, he went on to become a horticulturist. He was a fun-loving man who loved to fish and he always supported his beloved Chicago Bears, Cubbies, and Iowa Hawkeyes. John was also a phenomenal pool and card player. He will be remembered by all as the “life of the party” and he had a true good heart.

John is survived by his daughter Amy (Chris) Lewis; grandchildren: Kevin Aiello and Victoria Aiello; sisters: Rosemary (Harry) Ossont, Anita Anderson, Genny (Craig) Huls, Gerry (Steve) Weaver; brothers: Chris (Laura) McBride, David (Royal) McBride; uncle: Richard Ketcham; numerous cousins. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews, plus all the many friends he has made throughout the years. Special mention to his friend Susie.

John was preceded in death by his parents; brother-in-law: Kenny Upton and nephews: K.J. Upton and Kurt Upton.

Born April 2, 1946, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Arthur G and Thelma Anderson Swanson. On June 21, 1969, she married Robert Paige in Monmouth, IL. He died on June 9, 1983.&nbsp; She started dating Jerry Downer in January of 1985 and that turned into a 7 year loving relationship until his death on August 25, 1992. She attended and graduated from Burlington High School in 1964. Marylin worked in the offices of different truck lines for 44 years and at Doran for 20 years. She played golf when she was able to and liked playing cards. She loved the river and the 35 years she lived at Lake Stevenson. She was a member of St. Paul United Church of Christ but did also attend other churches through the years. Survivors include her brother Robert "Bob" (Linda) Swanson; Bob's only son, Kirk's wife Susan Swanson; 14 of the Paige and Massner nieces and nephews; brother-in-law Ron (Diane) Paige; sister-in-law Retha; and many great wonderful friends especially Sue Webb and Nancy Simms. She was preceded in death by her husband, her partner, Jerry Downer, her parents and her nephew Kirk Swanson. Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh Crematory. Marilyn Paige

Gladys Lucille Eppley, 103, of LaHarpe, Ill. passed away at 4:43 a.m. Monday, Nov. 18, 2024 at the Oak Lane Nursing &amp; Rehab in Stronghurst, Ill.&nbsp; Gladys was born July 2, 1921 in Durham, Ill., the daughter of Arthur Leslie and Mary Ann Reed Shinn. She was raised by her stepmother, Bertha Shinn, after losing her parents early in life. On March 2, 1941, she married George L. Eppley at the Paul Blender home near Durham. He preceded her in death on Jan. 7, 2006.

Survivors include two daughters: Suzanne Miller of Rushville, Ill. and Dianne (Greg) Blythe of LaHarpe, one daughter-in-law: Sylvia Eppley of Rushville; grandchildren, Kim (Jon) Barr of Carthage, Melissa (Tyler) Rhode of Carlock, Lance (Amanda) Blythe of LaHarpe, Chris Eppley of St. Louis, and Erin (Ryan) VanHorn of Chattanooga, Tenn.; step-grandchildren, Eric (Krisa) Miller of Burlington, Kevin (Tamara) Miller of Dallas City and Jarrod (Jenny) Miller of Cedar Rapids; great-grandchildren, Kaila (Jacob) Rowland, Hailey and Trenton Blythe, Garrett, Preston and Travis Rhode and Seth, Isaac and Abby VanHorn; step-great-grandchildren: David Miller, Ashlyn Miller and Alexis (Trevor) Meierotto and great–great-grandchildren: Aria and Briella Rowland.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by one son: Dennis Eppley; infant sister: Vivian Violet Shinn; one son-in-law: David Miller and many other extended family members.&nbsp;

Gladys attended Bross Grade School and graduated from Colusa High School in 1939. While attending school, Gladys enjoyed making many friends and cheerleading. She met her husband, George, while attending church at the Durham United Methodist Church. She was a lifelong member of the church, holding many offices within the church and participating in the church choir. She enjoyed being an active mother, playing games with her kids, cooking meals, gardening, canning food, sewing and making homecoming dresses. Later, she enjoyed keeping her grandchildren and even kept kids that weren’t hers, and loved doing it.&nbsp;

One can only imagine what all she experienced in her 103 years on this earth - what a journey! Everyone at Oak Lane loved her and she them. Gladys is a hard one to pass off to God, but you can bet she will have a great time there also. To have known her was to love her.&nbsp;

Friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2024 at Banks &amp; Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe. The family will not be present Tuesday.&nbsp;

The family will receive friends from 9:30 until 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 27 at Banks &amp; Beals. The funeral service will follow at 11 with Ryan VanHorn officiating.&nbsp;

Tami Gay Mace, 65 of Burlington, died on Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2024, at Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born of Nov. 25, 1958, in Chico, Calif., she was the daughter of Charles and Nora Galbreth Paxton. On April 25, 1982, in Las Vegas, Nev., she married Carl Mace.

She is survived by her husband Carl; daughter Nicole Mace; granddaughter Peyton Mace; mother Nora; sisters Candy Gerling and Kim. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father Chuck.

Per her wishes cremation has been entrusted and accorded to the care of Lunning Chapel. No services will be held at this time.

Tami Gay Mace

Konrad Stefan Montsko, 75, died peacefully on Thursday, Oct. 3, 2024, at Great River Klein Center in West Burlington.&nbsp; He was born on March 21, 1949, to Stefan and Maria Gurka Montsko, in Hohen Schönberg, Mecklenburg, near the Baltic Sea in East Germany.&nbsp; His family was resettled after WW2 from Czechoslovakia to East Germany, fled to West Germany in 1952, and immigrated to the United States in 1956.&nbsp; He graduated from Notre Dame High School in 1965.&nbsp; He belonged to Divine Mercy Parish / SS Mary and Patrick Church in West Burlington.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Konrad worked in a variety of industries, including manufacturing of agricultural equipment, military ammunition, commercial building systems, and food products.&nbsp; He worked in construction and sold life insurance.&nbsp; He was very sociable and especially enjoyed jobs as a bartender and a casino poker dealer.&nbsp; Once he retired, he offered rides to many folks who happened to need transportation for errands or appointments, and he helped homebound friends.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Konrad loved taking photos at social gatherings, and especially of nature all around him in every season and in every kind of light.&nbsp; He enjoyed card and board games.&nbsp; He joined a bowling league and liked to play pool.&nbsp; His great adventure was skydiving.&nbsp;&nbsp;He hated shopping and did not care about accumulating or managing stuff; even as a child, he gave any unused items away.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Konrad had a kind and generous nature and deep faith, with an impulsive mischievous fun side.&nbsp; He was grateful for whatever blessings came his way and for all the friends and acquaintances who shared or touched his life, including all the interesting residents at the Friedenheim community where he lived for several years.&nbsp; He was moved by all the thoughtful folks who visited him at Klein Center.&nbsp; And he was thankful for the excellent care provided by the dedicated Klein Center staff. &nbsp;

 </figure>Konrad Stefan Montsko, 75, died peacefully on Thursday, Oct. 3, 2024, at Great River Klein Center in West Burlington.&nbsp; He was born on March 21, 1949, to Stefan and Maria Gurka Montsko, in Hohen Schönberg, Mecklenburg, near the Baltic Sea in East Germany.&nbsp; His family was resettled after WW2 from Czechoslovakia to East Germany, fled to West Germany in 1952, and immigrated to the United States in 1956.&nbsp; He graduated from Notre Dame High School in 1965.&nbsp; He belonged to Divine Mercy Parish / SS Mary and Patrick Church in West Burlington.&nbsp;&nbsp;Konrad worked in a variety of industries, including manufacturing of agricultural equipment, military ammunition, commercial building systems, and food products.&nbsp; He worked in construction and sold life insurance.&nbsp; He was very sociable and especially enjoyed jobs as a bartender and a casino poker dealer.&nbsp; Once he retired, he offered rides to many folks who happened to need transportation for errands or appointments, and he helped homebound friends.&nbsp;&nbsp;Konrad loved taking photos at social gatherings, and especially of nature all around him in every season and in every kind of light.&nbsp; He enjoyed card and board games.&nbsp; He joined a bowling league and liked to play pool.&nbsp; His great adventure was skydiving.&nbsp;&nbsp;He hated shopping and did not care about accumulating or managing stuff; even as a child, he gave any unused items away.&nbsp;&nbsp;Konrad had a kind and generous nature and deep faith, with an impulsive mischievous fun side.&nbsp; He was grateful for whatever blessings came his way and for all the friends and acquaintances who shared or touched his life, including all the interesting residents at the Friedenheim community where he lived for several years.&nbsp; He was moved by all the thoughtful folks who visited him at Klein Center.&nbsp; And he was thankful for the excellent care provided by the dedicated Klein Center staff. &nbsp;Konrad was preceded in death by his parents.&nbsp; He is survived by his sister Anna of Park Ridge IL and a few remaining scattered cousins.&nbsp; Memorial contributions may be made to Divine Mercy Parish,&nbsp;502 West Mt. Melody Kay&nbsp; Hensley, 70, of LaHarpe, Ill. died Monday, Nov. 18, 2024, at her home. She was born June 18, 1954, in LaHarpe the daughter of Clarence and Helen Cratsenberg Ingles, who preceded her in death. On Aug. 14, 1977, she married Roger Hensley in LaHarpe. He also preceded her in death on Aug. 20, 1980.

She is survived by two brothers, Donald (Peg) Ingles of Lomax, Ill. and Randy (Joyce) Ingles of Harvey, La. and one sister-in-law, Cindy Ingles of Pleasant Plains, Ill.

Although Melody had no children of her own, she showered lots of love on her students and many nieces and nephews.

She has nine nieces and nephews, fifteen great-nieces and nephews and eight great-great- nieces and nephews.

After her parents went into a nursing home, Melody became her brother, Paul’s, primary care giver.&nbsp;

Besides her parents and husband she was preceded her in death by two brothers, Gary Ingles in 2022 and Paul Ingles in 2023.

Melody is a retired elementary special education teacher of the LaHarpe School District. She retired after 37 years of teaching. She was a member of the LaHarpe Christian Church, where she taught Sunday School for many years.

Friends may call after 3 p.m. Friday, Nov. 22, 2024 at Banks &amp; Beals Funeral in LaHarpe, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m.

The funeral service for Melody will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 23, 2024, at the LaHarpe Christian Church with Pastor Nate McCarter officiating. Burial will follow in LaHarpe Cemetery.&nbsp;

Nancy Carol Schau,&nbsp;78, of Donnellson, died Saturday, Nov. 16, 2024 at her home. She was born on Dec. 17, 1945, in Montrose, the daughter of Guerden Sr. and Sadie Schiller Christensen. On Oct. 29, 1966, she married Gary Schau at Keokuk United Church of Christ. 

Nancy was a loving daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.&nbsp;&nbsp;She graduated from Central Lee High School in Donnellson, Iowa in 1964, completed airline school, and started working for Collins Radio in Cedar Rapids. During her forty-four-year career, she served as a secretary at Farm Bureau, Central Lee Schools, and Southeastern Community College before retiring Nov. 2010.Nancy deeply cherished spending time with her family, specifically spoiling her grandchildren and chasing them to all their sports and activities. She also enjoyed traveling, gardening, and sewing. She was especially happy when she was in the kitchen cooking for others. Nancy delighted in baking pies and cakes, often sharing her creations with others at charity functions and weddings. 

For many years she served as treasurer for her church, Donnellson Presbyterian Church, and in the community organizations she was a member of: TTT and the American Legion Auxiliary #474 both in Donnellson.

Survivors include her loving husband: Gary; two children: Anthony (Kim) Schau of North Liberty, Iowa, and Jeff (Amy) Schau of Kansas City, Mo.; grandchildren: Kia (Drew) Wagner of Tiffin, Iowa; Alexis Schau and fiancée Kaden McAreavy of North Liberty, Iowa, Hunter Schau of North Liberty, Iowa and Will Schau of Kansas City, Missouri; and great-grandchild: Everlee Wagner of Tiffin. She was preceded in death by her parents.

A visitation will be held from 12 to 6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 22, 2024, at Schmitz Funeral Home in Donnellson where the family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m.&nbsp;&nbsp;A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 23, 2024, at Schmitz Funeral Home in Donnellson with Tony Keefe officiating. Richard Arthur "Rich" Jaeger, 81, of Burlington, died Tuesday, November 12, 2024, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in West Burlington. Born May 3, 1943, in Burlington, Iowa, he was the son of Raymond and Helen Jaeger. He served in the Navy during the Vietnam War. He married Catherine Baldridge in 1968 and became the parents to Scott, they later divorced. He then married May Mason in 1987, they became the parents to Amy, they later divorced.

Rich was a supervisor for Carl A. Nelson for over 30 years and traveled extensively with his work. He loved fishing and anything outdoors, woodworking, carpentry and enjoying a Bud Light or a blackberry brandy at the VFW. But above everything, he enjoyed his time spent with his children, family and friends.

He is survived by his two children; Scott (Cynnamon Crabb) Jaeger and Amy (Dylan Keller) Jaeger; four grandchildren, Dylan Jaeger, Chayce Jaeger, Chloe Lightfoot and Ethan Danforth; great grandson Jasper Jaeger; three sisters, Edith Jaeger, Donna Hull and Diana Jackson and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers Chuck Jaeger, Don “Skip” Jaeger and Fred Jaeger, nephews David Jaeger, Brian Hull and niece Allison Sturgill.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 18 at Lunning Chapel where the family will receive friends. Full military honors will be conducted by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard at 1 p.m. Tuesday, November 19 at Lunning Chapel. Burial will be in Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery.

Anita Kathryn Janik, 75, of Burlington, died Thursday, Nov.&nbsp; 14, 2024, at the University of Iowa Hospitals &amp; Clinics in Iowa City.

Anita was born May 28, 1949, in Anniston, Ala., the daughter of Joseph &nbsp;and Nell Johnson Janik.

She was a 1967 graduate of Burlington High School.&nbsp;

Anita worked for US West for 30 years where she retired in 1998, and later worked at Dillons BBQ for 20 years.

Anita enjoyed the simple things in life. &nbsp;She liked the peace of a nice cup of coffee; watching "Friends" or various British T.V. shows; and adored the album "Yanni - Live at the Acropolis" and The Three Tenors. &nbsp;She had a big heart and appreciated taking care of the people she loved. &nbsp;Her life revolved around her family. &nbsp;Her son and new twin grand-babies were everything to her. &nbsp;Anita's kindness and warmth will be missed, but her memory and legacy will continue on through her family.

Family includes her son, Adam (Noor) Janik; siblings, Marty (Krista) Janik, and Shannon Eicher; grandchildren, Cru and Sam; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, niece, and one great-nephew.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh Crematory.

Hope was born Sept. 8, 1958, in Chicago, Ill., the daughter of William Frederick and Rose Oboikovitz Luzadder. &nbsp; Hope was a fighter. &nbsp;She loved her family fiercely and deeply and excelled at running her home. &nbsp;She had a deep and unwavering faith that guided her throughout her life. &nbsp;She enjoyed writing poetry and sharing her gift with others. &nbsp;She loved reading the Bible and keeping prayer in her heart and on her lips. &nbsp;She was very active at First Baptist Church in Danville; always a willing worker and enjoyed serving as a deaconess. &nbsp; Her kindness and generosity will be missed, but her spirit and legacy will be carried by all who love her.

Hope's family include her husband of 48 years, Kenneth Hillyer; children; Chrystal (Aaron) Jackson and Kenny Hillyer, Jr; grandchildren, Jimmy Hillyer, Jamie Hillyer, and Mary Hillyer; siblings, David B. (Linda) Luzadder, and Cindy William; and niece, Rose &nbsp;Weaver.

Hope Mary Hillyer

Vernon&nbsp; Paul “Vern” Morrow, 80, died Nov. 11, 2024, surrounded by his family.

He was born to Kathryn and Fredrick Morrow on February 12,1944. He was the youngest of four children. He graduated from Keokuk High School in 1963. He had an interest in cars and took a mechanic class at Southeastern Community College. His love for cars led him to jobs as a truck mechanic for various companies. In his spare time, he loved to work on his own cars.

Vernon met Nancy Lebeck Hunter at a singles group in Burlington and they united in marriage on Oct. 19, 1991. They blended their two families together in their union.

Vernon loved to look for frugal finds at auctions. He also loved reading western novels. He will be remembered by his family for his booming laughter, his big bear hugs, and his amazing pancakes. Most of all Vernon loved to see his grandchildren and they were his true pride and joy.

Vernon is survived by his wife, Nancy Morrow, two sons, Eric (Casey) and Rex (Janice) Morrow; three stepchildren John Hunter, Diana Orwick (Brian), and Sarah Camp (Jared); and his grandchildren: Elizabeth, Haley, Brady, Casey, Reagan, Heather, Adelle, and Luke; and two great grandchildren: Rosalyn and Lucian.

He is preceded in death by his parents, his brother Jim, and two sisters Kay and Carolee.

There will be a private family graveside service. In lieu of flowers, make a donation to the charity of your choice.

Chelsea Nicole Griswold, age 27 of Louisa, Ken., died on Oct. 31, 2024, at her residence. She was born on March 4, 1997, in Galesburg, Ill.&nbsp;

She is survived by her mothers, Jackie Rene Griswold and Sammie Salisbury, her fur baby Bryson, a special grandma, Missy Thompson, her adopted mom, Robin, two special friends, Timmy Bailey and Kamryn, two special cousins, Nevaeh and Harmony, her many uncles, aunts, and cousins that she was very close to, and a host of other family and friends. 

Chelsea was preceded in death by her grandfather, Jack Lee Krow, a very special Nan who she loved and missed dearly, Rose Griswold, her grandma that she was very close to, Rosemary Griswold, her great grandparents, and two great uncles.

A memorial service will be held on Nov. 16, 2024, at 2 p.m. at the Louisa Fellowship Church in Louisa, Ken. with a balloon release. Friends are encouraged to wear Jack Skellington attire in memory of Chelsea. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Crum Funeral Home to help with funeral expenses.

Sandra Sue Shipman, 86, of Dallas City, Ill., died Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2024, at Maple Grove Memory Care in Carthage, Ill.

Sandra was born Jan. 5, 1938, the daughter of Roy L. and Avery L. Akers Allen.&nbsp; She grew up on her parents’ farm near St. Mary, north of Plymouth, Ill, and became the family matriarch upon the sudden loss of her mother in 1951.&nbsp; Sandra went on to graduate in 1955 from Plymouth High School as the class Salutatorian.

On July 1, 1956, she married the love of her life, Ronald K. Shipman, which launched a 60-year true-love story that never waned – but was put on a brief pause after Ron’s death on Oct. 12, 2016.

Following high school, Sandra worked a number of jobs, including at Yetter Manufacturing and the Hancock County Farm Bureau.&nbsp; She attended beauty school in Burlington, which led to a highly successful career in the beauty field spanning over 40 years.&nbsp; Sandra’s Petite Flair beauty salon was a mainstay of Dallas City small business for over 20 years.&nbsp; Eventually, she transitioned to a follow-on career as a Mary Kay Consultant, continuing her passion for promoting women-owned businesses and the field of beauty.

She and Ron lived many places throughout their life, including Carthage, Burlington, New London, Colchester, Beaverdale, Lomax, Dallas City and even spent several years living in Pine Bluff, Ark. They amassed many friends and made a positive impact on peoples’ lives everywhere they went.&nbsp; Sandra always saw the best in people, especially children; to Sandra, every child was the greatest blessing a person could have. Her infectious enthusiasm and genuine concern for friends and family were inspirational and uplifting to everyone who met her.

Sandra enjoyed serving the community, whether it be through prayer, cooking meals, serving as an Election Official, teaching Vacation Bible School, or helping with Red Cross Blood Drives. She was a woman of strong, unwavering Christian faith; Ron and Sandra were members of – and were married in - the First Baptist Church in Carthage, and later became members of the First Christian Church in Dallas City.

Survivors include three sons: Audie Shipman of Dallas City, Doren Shipman of Dallas City, Brian Shipman of Hamilton, Ill. and one daughter, Karma Shipman of Houston, Texas, four grandchildren: Landon, Brenton (Jessica), Mason and Paige; three great-grandchildren: Joseph, William and Isabella; one brother: Larry Allen of Carthage and four sisters: Linda (Dale) Schamberger of Carthage, Janice Crum of Carthage, Chris (Ron) Totten of Salisbury, North Carolina and Cheryl (Wes) Shoemyer of Shelbina, Mo.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; her step-mother: Carol Allen and three brothers: Sidney, Earl and Daniel Allen.&nbsp;

Banks &amp; Beals Funeral Home of Dallas City is assisting the family.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 21, 2024, at the First Baptist Church in Carthage.

The funeral service for Mrs. Shipman will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 22, 2024, at the First Baptist Church, followed by burial at the Oak Grove Cemetery, rural Carthage.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to Hickory Grove Supportive Living or the First Baptist Church of Carthage.

Sandra Sue Shipman

Pauline A. Ritter,&nbsp;90, of Burlington, and formerly of Fort Madison, passed away at 12:47 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 17, 2024, at Addington Place in Burlington.&nbsp; &nbsp;

She was born on July 16, 1934, in Troy, Ill. to Merlin and Viola Buettikoffer Anderson.&nbsp;&nbsp;On June 10, 1952, she married Ralph George Ritter in St. Jacob, Ill. and he preceded her in death on Oct. 30, 2016.&nbsp;&nbsp;Pauline, along with her husband Ralph owned and operated Ritter’s Garden Center in Ft. Madison for twenty-one years and later in West Burlington.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Pauline was a former member of St. John United Church of Christ in Fort Madison and currently the First Christian Church in Burlington.&nbsp;&nbsp;Pauline and Ralph loved to travel and did so extensively throughout Europe; they had been to most of the countries there, including England, Scotland, Ireland, France, Switzerland, Italy, Austria, Germany, Hungary, Czech Republic, Estonia, Denmark, and Russia. They traveled to Austria, New Zealand, the Fiji Islands, and around South America through the Straits of Magellan and around Cape Horn.&nbsp;&nbsp;She was also very proud that she was able to visit all 50 states, including her last one, Utah, at the age of eighty-five.&nbsp; Pauline enjoyed playing bridge, and she always loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Survivors include one daughter, Patricia (Cliff) Boyke of Lakemoor, Ill.; one son, Stephen (Lynn) Ritter of Burlington; six grandchildren, Nicholas (Ashley) Richardson, Christopher (Jesse) Ritter, Nathan (Cindy) Richardson, Ryan (Jacque) Ritter, Kathlene (Greg) Richardson-DuBose &amp; Amanda (Chris) Ritter Brown; fourteen great-grandchildren; one brother, George Anderson of St. Jacob, Ill.; two sisters, Genevieve Armstrong of Alamogordo, N.M. and Mary Anderson of King George, Vir.; nieces and nephews.&nbsp;&nbsp;She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

The funeral service for Pauline will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2024, at 11 a.m. at the First Christian Church in Burlington with Rev. David Yonker officiating.&nbsp;&nbsp;The family will meet with friends from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at the church.&nbsp;&nbsp;Her burial will be held at Keokuk National Cemetery.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Pauline A. Ritter

Ralph Caston III, 79, formerly of Burlington, died from complications of a stroke on his 79th birthday, Nov.&nbsp; 14, 2024, at his home in Surprise, Ariz. He was surrounded by loved ones. Born on Nov. 14, 1945, he was the son of Ralph Jr. and Carol Caston of Caston’s Shoe Shop. 

In 1963, Ralph III graduated from Burlington High School and later enlisted in the U.S. Army. In South Korea, he was a supply manager for the Army’s 4th Infantry Division. After the military, Ralph worked in management for Pizza Hut. He married Marty (Martin) Caslyn in 1971. They later divorced. 

He attended Southeastern Community College and went on to earn a BA from Western Illinois University. Ralph joined the family business, Caston’s Shoe Shop, and took over when his parents retired. Ralph enjoyed conversations with customers, which often included his own brand of philosophy and humor. He was always available to young people who would come by the shoe shop looking for someone to talk to.

He encouraged them to step up in life and seek their own happiness. He told The Burlington Hawkeye’s Bob Saar: “I was put here for people to witness to. I have listened to a lot of people. I would explain to them where they could get information and how they could improve their situation.” Ashlin Schwartz, who appreciated his encouragement, helped in the shop and ran errands.

Many people, including family members, are grateful for Ralph’s compassionate listening. When his younger sister Merry dropped out of high school, Ralph convinced her to take the GED tests and attend community college. Because she was reluctant, Ralph drove her to her first class and took it with her. Merry went on to earn a master's of fine arts and became a college teacher, all because her brother cared.

When his father died in 1994, Ralph provided a stable foundation for his mother and special needs brother, Randy. After his mother chose to reside at the Burlington Care Center at the age of 89, Ralph drove there every day and delivered the bookkeeping for the shoe shop. Because of his devotion, she was able to stay active up until her death at 93.

Ralph was also devoted to his two daughters, Melynda Caston of Montana and V. Amanda Williams of Arizona. He enjoyed his grandchildren, Aurora, Juston, Kaylyn, and Ambrose; Jacob, Elizabeth, Aden, and Landon; and great-grandsons, Kaladin and Atticus, as well as his sons-in-law, Anthony Allen and Brandon Williams.

After his mother passed away, Ralph closed Caston’s Shoe Shop and moved to Arizona. He started a new life and enjoyed talking to customers at his daughter and granddaughter’s Anime store near Phoenix.

His brother Randy, who died before him, enjoyed Ralph’s quirky humor and steady presence. His older sister Betty Evetts of Texas will miss his phone calls. He will be remembered by his sister Merry and brother Richard as a generous person who would “give you the shirt off his back.” His daughters will always miss him.

A celebration of life will be announced later.

Barbara M. Fritz, 92, of Burlington, died Sunday, Nov. 10, 2024, at Oakview Care and Rehabilitation Center in Burlington.

Born June 26, 1932, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Carl and Hazel Schwerin.&nbsp; She married Rolland Fritz on June 18, 1950, he preceded her in death on Sept. 20, 2011.

She was a member of Unity Lutheran Church and was very active with her church.

Barbara worked as a bartended for Dugout Lounge and the Paddlewheel.&nbsp; In addition, she worked in the snack bar for many years for Bowl-In Lanes and more recently for American Greetings Cards with ShopKo.&nbsp; After Rolland’s death, she began volunteering for Oakview Care Center calling bingo, helping with “fancy hands day” and made many friends there. &nbsp;

She was a fun-loving lady and was an excellent cook, she loved the holidays and enjoyed decorating and hosting.&nbsp; She enjoyed keeping tabs on the neighborhood and spending time with her grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.

She is survived by her three children; Stephen (Arlys) Fritz, Jeffrey (Mac) Fritz and David (Pat) Fritz all of Burlington; four grandchildren, Jill (Kevin) Dunlop, Jeffrah (Jerimiah) Levins, Hillaurie (Travis) Bonar and Nathan (Nicole) Fritz; seven great grandchildren, Samuel Martin, Drake (Brooklyn Pardall) Fritz, Avery Levins, Ruthie Bonar, Rolland Bonar, Ava Fritz and Leopold Fritz and two great-great grandchildren, Oliver Martin and Finn Martin; one brother Donald Schwerin of Florida and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and two brothers, Carl Schwerin and Warren Schwerin.

The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov.&nbsp; 13 at Lunning Chapel.&nbsp; The family will receive friends for one hour before the service.&nbsp; Burial will be in Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery.

Barbara M. Fritz

Kristi Anne Zick, 42, of Burlington, died Nov. 12, 2024 at Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House, West Burlington, due to a Huntington’s-like Disease.

Born Sept. 30, 1982 in Arlington Heights, Ill., Kristi was the daughter of Wendy and Jerry Zick and sister of Julie Zick.&nbsp; Kristi started elementary school in Arlington Heights and finished in Keokuk.&nbsp; She then attended Oak Street Middle School and Burlington Community High School, graduating with the class of 2001.&nbsp; Kristi’s activities included dance and cheerleading.&nbsp; She especially enjoyed AP Calculus and Physics classes.

Kristi attended Iowa State University where she studied Materials Engineering.&nbsp; She worked as a server and bartender in Ames and West Des Moines.&nbsp; She returned to Burlington and worked as a receptionist at Deery Brothers until she became disabled.

Kristi enjoyed attending social events, decorating for holidays, baking sweet treats for family and friends, and working out with her fitness trainer, Stacey.&nbsp; She loved playing Sudoku – but only the “hard” puzzles and solitaire on the computer.&nbsp; She was an avid Chicago Bears fan.

As her disease progressed, Kristi moved in with her parents and brought much joy to their household.&nbsp; She especially enjoyed spending time with them in their Venice, Florida residence where she was welcomed as a part of the community.&nbsp; Kristi lived at Klein Center in West Burlington for the past few years where she was surrounded by wonderful, caring nurses, CNAs, and staff.

Kristi is survived by her parents, Wendy and Jerry Zick of Burlington, sister Julie Zick of Coralville, aunts, uncles, and cousins.&nbsp; She was preceded in death by two uncles and her grandparents.

Visitation will be Friday, Nov. 15, 2024, from 5 to 7 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, Burlington.&nbsp; Funeral service will be Saturday, Nov. 16, 2024, at 11 a.m. at First United Methodist Church, Burlington.&nbsp; Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery in Greene, Iowa at a later date.&nbsp; Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Lunning Chapel.

Memorials may be given in Kristi’s name to the Special Needs Foundation of Burlington, Stead Family Children’s Hospital of Iowa City, or Klein Center Activities Fund of West Burlington.

Mary Anna Menke,&nbsp;83, of West Point, died at 1:05 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2024, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in West Burlington.

She was born on Aug. 6, 1941, in Mediapolis, the daughter of Vernon and Frances Davis Hedger. She was raised by her mother Frances and Arlo Humphrey. On May 21, 1966, she married Floyd S. “Gus” Menke at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Fort Madison, Iowa. He preceded her in death on March 11, 1993.

Survivors include her daughter: Paula (Rod) Roberts of Des Moines, Iowa; grandchildren: Renea (Jason) Fowler of Donnellson, Russell Roberts of Des Moines, Iowa; three great granddaughters; and sister-in-law: Kathy Hedger. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband: Floyd; son: Kevin; brother: Vernon Lee Hedger; in-laws: Charles and Melva DeWitt, Vincent and Marlene Wyatt, James and Karen Schmidt.

Mary was a 1959 graduate of Farmington High School. She worked for Sheaffer Pen Co. for many years. After retirement, she worked at the Corner Tap. Mary was a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in West Point and the Altar and Rosary Society of the church. She enjoyed playing cards, crocheting, traveling and watching the Iowa Hawkeyes.

A visitation will be held from 12 noon to 6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 15, 2024, at Schmitz Funeral Home in West Point, where the family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. that evening.

A funeral service will be held at 12 noon, Saturday, Nov. 16, 2024, at Schmitz Funeral Home in West Point, with Father Dan Dorau officiating.

Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery in West Point.

Memorials have been established in her memory for West Point Fire and Rescue or Calvary Cemetery.

Debra Lynn "Debbie" Baldwin, 70, of Burlington, died Friday, Nov. 8, 2024, at Oak View Nursing Home in West Burlington.&nbsp; Born April 27, 1954, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Jack, Jr. and Audry JoAnn Dirth Knotts. She married Victor G. Baldwin on April 29, 1977; they had one child, Richard L. Baldwin, of Burlington. Debra also had one stepdaughter, Victoria Baldwin. In Debra's younger years, she worked at The Arion Restaurant in Burlington, Iowa. After the birth of her son, Debra was a stay at home mom. Debra enjoyed playing BINGO, fishing at the family cabin, gardening, watching The Golden Girls, and listening to Old Time Country music. She also loved her pets, especially her recently departed dog, Scoobie. Debra was of Christian faith and loved going to church until her health prevented her from doing so; but she continued to watch sermons on TV.&nbsp; Survivors include her son, Richard Lee Baldwin of Burlington; one sister, Jackie (Jim) Capps of Burlington; one brother, John Knotts, of Burlington; three nieces, Christina (Eric) Lybarger, Kimberly Capps and Ashley Capps; two nephews, Jamie Capps and Josh Knotts; four great-nieces; five great-nephews; three great-great nieces; and one great-great nephew. Michelle was a highly talented designer in the Minneapolis area, and was the CEO of MBloyd Design. She won many awards and had been recognized nationally for her work. Survivors include her father; two sisters, Terri Smith of O Fallon, Ill. and Lori Hogberg of Burlington; six nieces and nephews; six great-nieces and nephews. She was loved by many and will be greatly missed. She was preceded in death by her mother, Bev Mercer. Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh Crematory. Sharon Kay Wasson Van Ness, 86, died Nov. 8, 2024, surrounded by her family, and with her beloved long-haired mini dachshund curled into her side.

 </figure>Sharon Kay Wasson Van Ness, 86, died Nov. 8, 2024, surrounded by her family, and with her beloved long-haired mini dachshund curled into her side.Born July 31, 1938, Sharon Kay Wasson married Earl Dean Van Ness at The Little Brown Church in the Vale in Nashua in 1963. They welcomed their son Michael in 1965 and son David was born in 1968.Sharon was an accomplished baker and cook, always on the hunt for a new recipe to try. Eventually, she turned her culinary skills into a business, baking and decorating cakes and cookies and making butter mints for hundreds of birthday parties, graduations, holidays, and events in Mediapolis and the surrounding communities over the years.Sharon was an animal lover, especially fond of dogs, hummingbirds, and cats. She enjoyed doing word search puzzles, going to garage sales and flea markets, and reading western and cowboy romance novels. She had several specialty collections, including fancy handkerchiefs, antique hat pins, and ladies’ antique gloves.Sharon was preceded in death by her parents, a beloved daughter-in-law, and two nieces. She is survived by her husband Dean Van Ness, her sons Michael (Dianne) Van Ness and David (Shawna) Van Ness, her brother Wayne (Irene) Wasson, her sister-in-law Annalou Vigil, four grandchildren: Cara (Clayton) Thacker, Blake Van Ness, Delaney (Jeremiah) Carter, and Ellerie Van Ness, four great-grandchildren: Kayden, Kendall, Bennett and Emersyn, as well as many nieces and nephews and, of course, her beloved dog, Cleopatra.In accordance with Sharon's wishes, there will be no funeral or visitation, and her body will be cremated. Memorial gifts may be sent to Great River Hospice House.Lunning Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.
