John M. Klindt, 79, of&nbsp;<a href="https://www.legacy.com/us/obituaries/local/nebraska/hastings">Hastings, Neb</a>., passed away on July 1, 2026, of IBM, a progressive muscle disease.

Per John's wishes, no services will be held. Cremation took place. DeWitt Funeral Home and Cremation Services are assisting his family with arrangements.

John was born on Sept. 24, 1946, in&nbsp;Powell, Wyo., to James M. Klindt and Alice V. (Sheets) Klindt. He spent his childhood in Wyoming, where he developed a deep appreciation for the outdoors, hard work, and the western way of life.

During summers, his great-uncle, John Henry Klindt, formally of Mediapolis, would come to visit his brother Fred and sister-in-law Effie Klindt and their families, Jim and Alice Klindt and family, and Alan and Blanche Klindt and their two children, Fritz and Susan, and John H. and Fred's sister Birdie (Klindt) L.E. Petersen.

John M. worked as a ranch laborer, dude wrangler, farrier, and wilderness guard before embarking on a distinguished 35-year career as a research scientist with a masters degree and Ph.D.

He was preceded in death by an infant sister, his parents and grandparents, and cousin Fritz Klindt.

He is survived by his wife, Shelly; son, Alexander; his sister, Jeri Klindt Kinzel and his brother, Scott Klindt and Iowa relatives, Cosette Smith, Jute Klindt, Loretta (Luth) Cover, and her sister Karen, and other family members and friends.

John M. Klint

Katherine Lois Symmonds, 98, of Dallas City, Illinois, passed away at 1:41 p.m. Saturday, September 19, 2026, surrounded by her family at the Golden Good Shepherd Home, Golden, Illinois.

Katherine was born June 7, 1928, near Dallas City, the daughter of Paul Noland and Grace Loretta Byers Markey. On December 31, 1947 she married her high school sweetheart, Edward L. “Ed” Symmonds, at the Immaculate Conception Church in Carthage, Illinois. Ed preceded her in death September 29, 2021.

Katherine was raised on a farm near Dallas City. She was a 1946 graduate of Dallas City High School. Earlier in life, she stayed home to raise her children. She later worked various jobs, including, Sheaffer Pen Company in Fort Madison, Lomax Canning Factory, the Italian Village in Dallas City and lastly worked as a CNA for over 30 years at the Hancock County Nursing Home in Carthage.

She was an active member of the community, serving on the Plan Progress Committee, as a Girl Scout Leader, and was a faithful member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Dallas City, where she was active on the Altar &amp; Rosary Society. She enjoyed square dancing with Ed, tending to her large garden, bird watching, and making beautiful rugs. Katherine loved traveling and especially spending time with her family.

Survivors include four daughters: Diana (Byron) Shaw, Rita (Tom) Schaefer, Teresa (John) Pieper all of Dallas City and Nancy (Mike) Gavin of Salem, Kentucky and one son: Ed (Kathy) Symmonds of Swisher, Iowa; eighteen grandchildren: Jeni Richardson, Heather Thompson, Angie Bauer, Chris Thompson, Tiffaney Prickett, Aaron and Amy Walker, John, David and Matt Gavin, Andy Schaefer, Alicia Glueck, April Hamma, Leslie Vermillion, Laura Phillips and John, Dan and Dylan Pieper; 46 great-grandchildren and 9 great-great-grandchildren.

Besides her husband, Katherine was preceded in death by two daughters: Beverly Walker and Kathleen Bousman; two grandchildren: Eric Schaefer and Ashley Walker; one great-granddaughter: Kendra McAllister; two sons-in-law: Frank Walker and Roger Bousman; five brothers: Lester, Leon, Frank, John and Tony Markey and two sisters: Dorothy Johnson and Mary Rees.

The services for Katherine will be held at 11:30 a.m. Friday, September 25, 2026 at Banks &amp; Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City, with Fr. Tony Trosley officiating. Burial will follow at Gittings Mound Cemetery, rural Dallas City.

The family will receive friends from 10:30 a.m. until time of services Friday at the funeral home.

A memorial fund has been established for Blessing Hospice.

Becky Koehler, 69, of Burlington, died Thursday, September 17, 2026, at her home. Born December 22, 1956, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Richard F. and JoAnn McQueen Mellinger. On October 23, 1976, she married James Koehler in Burlington.&nbsp; Becky graduated from Burlington High School in 1975. In 2006, she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Iowa Wesleyan. She started her career as a teacher's aid with Corse Elementary and Oak Street Middle School. After graduating from college, she taught at Oak Street Middle School and Sunnyside Elementary for 15 years. She was a member of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and ADK. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends and especially loved spoiling her grandchildren. She found joy in crafting, reading, eating ice cream, cheering on Iowa State, and spending time at the beach. She also enjoyed shopping and watching NASCAR. Above all, she treasured the time spent making memories with the people she loved. Survivors include her husband of 50 years, James Koehler of Burlington; three sons, Josh Koehler of Johnston, Kristopher (Jennie) Koehler of West Des Moines, Nick (Sadie) Koehler of Clive; daughter, Amanda (Lucas) Neitzel of Ankeny, four grandchildren, Sophia Neitzel, Booker Koehler, Sydney Neitzel and Violet Koehler; and two brothers, Steve (Lenora) Mellinger of Brunswick, IA, and Robin (Lou Ann) Mellinger of Tiffin, IA. Emily Anne Bohnenkamp, 42, of Lomax, Ill., died Sunday, September 20, 2026, at her home. Born August 29, 1984, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Rickey Allan and Lori Ann Ruberg Bohnenkamp. She worked for a short time at the Dallas City Community Center, then later at Prall Insurance and at Corporate Medical. She was a member of Grace Bible Church in Dallas City. She enjoyed playing computer games, working puzzles, listening to music, doing water aerobics, and traveling on family vacations. Emily was always very sociable, and she loved spending time with people. Survivors include her mother, Lori Ann Bohnenkamp of Lomax, IL, three uncles, Tim (Teresa) Ruberg, James (Rebecca) Ruberg both of Burlington, Mike (Young) Ruberg of Olympia, Wash.; and many cousins. She was preceded in death by her father, two sisters, Corina and Elizabeth Bohnenkamp, maternal and paternal grandparents, three aunts and three uncles. Emily Ann Bohnenkamp

Steven B. (Bernard) “Steve” Thompson,&nbsp;69, of Kansas City, Missouri, formerly of West Point, Iowa, passed away on Sunday, September 13, 2026, at his home after living with ALS for three years, while never failing to sport a smile.

He was born on May 29, 1957, in Fort Madison, Iowa, the son of Clyde A. and Florence D. (Menke) Thompson. On November 14, 1981, he married Deborah J. Mueller at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Houghton, Iowa.

Survivors include his wife: Deb, of Kansas City; son: Deren (Amy) Thompson of Kansas City; grandchildren: Zachary, Paige and Charlie; mother: Florence Thompson of Donnellson, Iowa; siblings: Gary (Gale) Thompson of Houghton, Iowa; Darrell (Carrie Westcott) Thompson of Donnellson, Iowa and Lora Roth of Donnellson, Iowa; sister-in-law: Cathy Mueller of Corvallis, Oregon. Also surviving are aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father: Clyde; brother: Richard; brothers-in-law: Les Roth and Jeffrey Mueller; parents-in-law: Kenneth and Betty Mueller.

Steve was a 1975 Marquette High School graduate, leaving college in 1976 to join the family agri-business. His second career was as a licensed commercial journeyman electrician, a profession he pursued for twenty-five years. Following his retirement in 2022, Steve and Deb relocated to Kansas City, Missouri, to be near their son and his family, where Steve pursued his third and favorite career as grandfather.

A man of strong faith, Steve was a member of St. James Catholic Church in Liberty, Missouri, and formerly St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, where he was a choir member. He was a member of the Houghton Knights of Columbus and a former twelve-year Marquette School Board member.

Steve especially enjoyed time spent with his family, for whom he was always ready to lend a helping hand. He will be remembered for his strong work ethic, his ability to hold a conversation with anyone he met, his years of volunteering at Marquette Schools, his way with a barbecue grill and his appreciation for classic cars—a love passed down through a couple of generations. Steve was always up for a scenic road trip through the countryside and if it just happened to end at a winery, brewery or ice cream parlor, so be it.

During his journey, Steve participated in every ALS research study his energy allowed him to manage. The Speech Accessibility Project, jointly funded by Amazon, Apple, Google, Meta and Microsoft, was designed to make speech recognition tools more accessible for people with diverse voices caused by five specific diseases, including ALS. Steve remained committed to helping researchers find a cure and one of his final gifts was to the University of Miami Brain Endowment Bank.

A visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 30, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Houghton, where the family will receive friends from 4:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. A Christian wake service will be held at 6:00 p.m.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, October 1, 2026, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Houghton with Father Dan Dorau as celebrant.

Burial will be at St. John’s Cemetery in Houghton. Following the burial, a luncheon will be held at Houghton Knights of Columbus.

In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established in his memory to St. John’s Catholic Church, Holy Trinity Schools, and the&nbsp;<a href="https://teamgleason.org/" target="_blank">Team Gleason Foundation</a>. Team Gleason was instrumental in improving Steve’s life and the lives of those around him by loaning him a portable power chair and helping to bank his voice before it was lost, allowing us to continue to hear his words. Team Gleason helps people with the large financial and emotional burdens that come with ALS. Until there is a cure for ALS, there is Team Gleason.

Moerke and they enjoyed many years together until his passing in August 11, 2008. He started as a maintenance operator and eventually moved up to the role of supervisor. Earnest was a huge sports fan. He loved watching the Chicago Cubs, Packers, Nascar, Iowa Women's Basketball, and the Indiana Fever. In his free time, he enjoyed going fishing and watching old Western movies.&nbsp; Survivors include his son, Earnest A Timmerman of Bethalto, IL; and one sister, Melody Peterson of Burlington. Benjamin Joseph Brueck, 43, of Burlington, Iowa, passed away on September 12, 2026. Ben was born on January 5, 1983, in Burlington, Iowa, to Kenneth and Teresa (Blindt) Brueck. The oldest of seven children, Ben grew up knowing the special responsibility, and privilege, of being a big brother. He was a proud, protective, and loving brother who carried that role with him throughout his life. On May 31, 2008, Ben welcomed the light of his life, his daughter, Chloe Rose Brueck, lovingly known to him as his “Peanut Rose.” Of all the roles and titles Ben held in his life - son, brother, uncle, Papa, builder, businessman, co-founder of Four Seasons Excavation and Landscaping with his cousin Kyle Reid, and founder and CEO of FS, Inc. - the title he treasured most was Dad. His love for Chloe was fierce, unconditional, and at the very heart of who he was. She was his greatest joy, his greatest pride, and his greatest legacy. Ben was a builder in every sense of the word. Through his work and his company, FS, Inc., he helped shape and strengthen Southeast Iowa, leaving behind a lasting mark on the community he called home. Much like his grandfather and father, Ben understood being a builder was more than just building things. It was providing support, creating opportunities, and leaving something meaningful behind. Ben measured the true success of FS, Inc. not just in the work that was completed, but in the lives built within its walls. Born December 1, 1948, in Summit, IL, she was the daughter of Raymond and Mary (Constanzo) Radtke. On August 16, 1969, she married John Karl Sandell in Summit, IL. They moved to Burlington in 1970. He preceded her in death on August 25, 2022. Judith graduated from Nazareth Academy in LaGrange, IL, in 1966. She went on to obtain her bachelor's degree from Creighton University in Omaha, NE, in 1970. Judith was employed as the human resources director for Winegard Company for over 40 years. Judith was a member of Divine Mercy Parish. She was past president of United Way of Southeast Iowa. She was an antique enthusiast and was active in the Antique Quester's Club in Burlington. She served as a troop leader and board member for the Girl Scouts of America. She was a member of the Society of Human Resource Management, Junior Achievement, and served on the board of Burlington Steamboat Days. She loved reading, cooking (especially Italian food), and traveling for family vacations to Door County, Wisconsin, where they spent 38 summers. Survivors include her two sons, David John (Verity) Sandell of Skokie, IL, and Stephen Thomas Sandell of Burlington, and three beloved grandchildren, Jeremiah Sandell, Joshua Sandell, and Esmé Sandell. Madison High School.&nbsp; Ruby worked for over ten years at various nursing homes, caring for people. She then took a job with Heatilator, where she worked for 25 years. Ruby loved games. Whether she was doing crossword puzzles, playing cards and board games, or winning one of her many trophies for bowling, she enjoyed the competition and friendly fellowship that went along with them. She enjoyed reading and watching T.V. and never missed her favorite shows. She was an avid collector of unicorns and loved every unique one.&nbsp; Survivors include her three sons, Kenneth Nichols of Lockridge, Curtis (Serbreena) Nichols of West Burlington, and Tony Warth of Burlington; two daughters, Cassandra (Timothy) Hobbs of Burlington, Melissa (Joseph) Hesseltine of Burlington, and bonus daughter, Eryn Pohren of Mt. The family of Tamara “Tammy” McCoy is deeply saddened to announce her passing on Sept. 8, 2026. She was born on May 30, 1961, in Livermore, Calif. Tammy was full of creative energy and passionate about bringing people together. She wanted everyone to feel seen and special, and she tried to find the beauty in every day. Tammy devoted herself to her family and to the entire Burlington community. With the Art Center of Burlington and then the Capitol Theater, Tammy and her amazing team helped bring more people to downtown Burlington and Jefferson Street. Expansion of the Art Center space and programming, along with the opening of the Gallery Lounge, helped expose more people to the visual and performing arts. Tammy and team opened the Night Cap listening lounge, which breathed new life into this historic landmark, and worked to honor the Capitol by being selected as an Iowa Rock and Roll Hall of Fame venue. In addition, they worked to get a satellite regional museum site in Burlington for the same organization. Tammy also started a formal collaboration with the Southeast Iowa Community College Music Department and the Capitol Theater, and helped bring Civic Music and Southeast Iowa Symphony Orchestra to the Capitol Theater.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Tammy was also a certified Enneagram instructor, hosted and led a women’s study group for interdenominational faith, taught Meet the Masters to 5th graders at Sunnyside Elementary School for several years, volunteered at Hetta Gilbert, and, with another Burlington leader, started 100 Like Minds as a fundraiser for the Community Foundation. Tammy was a member of the KB Chapter of the PEO Sisterhood. She was on multiple boards, including the Bart Howard Foundation Board, the Community Foundation of Des Moines County Board, and the Great River Health System Foundation Board.&nbsp;

Tammy was given the Mayor's Volunteer Recognition Award in 2019, was an Emmy Award winner from the Greater Burlington Partnership in 2021, was named the Girl Scout Woman of Distinction in 2021, was given a proclamation accommodation letter from the Iowa Arts Council in 2022, and worked on the Iowa Great Places Citizen Advisory Board for the Iowa Arts Council and the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs.&nbsp; In 2022, she was given a proclamation from the City of Burlington for her work lifting the Art Center to prominence in downtown and promoting Burlington.&nbsp;

Beneath all of her accomplishments, Tammy was truly driven by her heart. Her deep love for people and for the arts fueled her drive and ambition. She strongly believed in the power of creativity and art as a source of personal expression, exploration, and healing; she worked tirelessly to bring people together and to inspire them to know themselves, love others, and do great things. She was an optimist who loved a challenge and never gave up when things got difficult. She was a lifelong learner who was open to new ideas and ways of doing things. She was an artist in her own right who took art classes, learned new mediums, fell in love with pastels, and even had some of her pieces commissioned. She loved hummingbirds, reading, cooking, traveling, making the every day feel special and the special feel extravagant. With her whole heart, Tammy loved her family, her friends, and she loved her life.&nbsp;

Tammy is lovingly remembered by her husband, Mike; children Lacey, Matt (Lindsay), Dale, Lindsey (Frank), Katie, and Kim; 15 grandchildren; mother Jenny Lederer; father Frank Watson (Kay), and brother Bob Watson (Robin).&nbsp; She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.&nbsp; A celebration of life will be held at the Capitol Theater and Art Center on Sunday, Oct. 11.&nbsp;

Gary Lee Housewright, 73, of Carman, passed away Wednesday, September 2, 2026, at Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in West Burlington. Born March 28, 1953, in La Harpe, IL, to William A. and Norma Jean Limkeman Housewright, Gary married Nicole "Nikki" Lynn Bower on December 17, 2011. Gary worked from boyhood in his family’s contracting business, later serving as President of Housewright Contracting and taking great pride in Midwest historic restorations like the Carthage Jail Visitor Center. A commercial pilot and P.A.D.I. Master Scuba Diver, Gary lived for adventure, music, and collecting classic cars. As a father, Gary shared his love of travel on family trips to Jamaica, Mexico, and Costa Rica. He enthusiastically “drug the kids along” to airshows, car shows, races, and street festivals until they loved them too. A commercial pilot and P.A.D.I. Master Scuba Diver, Gary lived for adventure, music, and collecting classic cars. As a father, Gary shared his love of travel on family trips to Jamaica, Mexico, and Costa Rica. David John Almendinger, 71, of Burlington, died Wednesday, September 9, 2026, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in West Burlington. Born May 28, 1955, in Burlington, he was the son of Kenneth John and Pauline Melba Peterson Almendinger. On December 31, 1997, he married Candy Lynn Hale in Burlington. She died on February 4, 2015. David was a welder and fabricator for G.E. for 30 years until his retirement.&nbsp; He was a simple man who enjoyed keeping busy and making the most of his days. He loved watching old movies, working in his yard, and tinkering on just about anything. When he was younger, he especially enjoyed riding his motorcycle. He had a soft spot for his dogs, who were spoiled and very loved. James L. Hand, 81, of Middletown, died Saturday, Sept. 12, 2026, at his home.

Born Dec. 25, 1944, in Burlington, he was the son of Louis Charles and Margaret Marie Lorber Hand. On June 25, 1965, he married Patricia Lee Jacobs in Burlington.

James graduated from Burlington High School in 1962. He went on to attend Western Illinois University, where he earned his bachelor’s degree. He then continued his education at St. Ambrose College, proudly earning his MBA in 1991.

James dedicated 36 years of his career to General Electric, where he worked as a computer design engineer. Outside of work, he enjoyed spending time outdoors and pursuing the activities he loved. He especially enjoyed duck hunting, fishing, golfing, and skiing.

Survivors include his wife, Patricia Hand of Middletown; three sons, Troy James Hand of Cedar Rapids, Darrin Allen Hand of Middletown, and Brian Boyd Hand of Danville; six grandchildren, Jake, Madison, Logan, Jessy, Nick, and Payton; three great-grandchildren, Joshia, Royce, and Regal; and his brother, Ron Hand of North Carolina.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Louis and Margaret, and one son, Tony Hand.

Marlene Helen Bennink, 86, of New London, died Thursday, September 10, 2026, at Oakview Nursing Center, Burlington.&nbsp;&nbsp;She was born October 20, 1939, in Pella, Iowa, to Jacob and Nellie Stouwie.&nbsp;&nbsp;She was a graduate of Pella Christian High School and AIB in Des Moines.&nbsp;&nbsp;On November 25, 1960, she married Ivan Verle Bennink in Oskaloosa.&nbsp;&nbsp;He died Friday, November 18, 2011.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Marlene was a homemaker and owned and operated a quilting and fabrics business, “The Top Drawer,” out of her home.&nbsp;&nbsp;She was a member of the Danville Baptist Church, where she played the organ and was a member of the women’s prayer group.&nbsp;&nbsp;She loved tending her flowers and being outside in her garden.

Survivors include her son Paul Bennink of New London; four grandchildren, Angela (Luke) Kershner, Cassandra (Justin) Curtis, Jamie Weinrich, and Jordan Bennink; several great-grandchildren; and her brother-in-law Neil Moss.&nbsp;&nbsp;Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her son James; daughter-in-law Ruthy Bennink; sister Trina Moss; and brother Jacob Stouwie.

Lanis Charles Sherwood, 79, of Burlington, passed away on Sunday, September 6, 2026, at his home.&nbsp;

Lanis was born on September 18, 1946, in Fort Madison, the son of Charles Arthur and Victoria (Schram) Sherwood.&nbsp;&nbsp;He was united in marriage to Judy Bloomer on July 16, 1969, in Burlington.&nbsp;&nbsp;Lanis sold cars for Stewart Ford and sold monuments for Leyda-Burrus and Metz. Lanis was a Deputy for the Des Moines County Sheriff’s Office from 1981 until his retirement in 2004.&nbsp;&nbsp;Lanis also worked for Auto Zone for 7 years.&nbsp;&nbsp;He enjoyed boating and rebuilding cars, riding motorcycles, and drinking coffee with his friends.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Born May 17, 1938, in Burlington, he was the son of Max Albert and Florence Ella Muzzy Conrad. In 1966 he married Cheryl Deats and together they had two daughters before their separation. On November 19, 1981, he married Catherine "Kay" Hertel in Burlington.&nbsp; He was a 1956 graduate of Burlington High School. He continued his education at Carthage College, where he earned his bachelor’s degree. &nbsp; Fritz worked as an Auditor for the State of Iowa for 34 years until his retirement.&nbsp; He had a true love for staying active and embracing life to the fullest. Over the years, Fritz completed three half triathlons and multiple marathons, and proudly participated in 22 RAGBRAIs. He also enjoyed skiing and explored much of the western Rocky Mountains on the slopes. In retirement, the YMCA became a favorite part of his daily routine, where he could be found working out or visiting with his Y Buddies. He was an active member of Bike Burlington, the Skiowans Ski Club, Burlington Civic Music, and the Southeast Iowa Symphony Orchestra. Through these activities and the many friendships he made along the way, he found countless ways to stay engaged, have fun, and enjoy the people around him. Fredric Muzzy "Fritz" Conrad

Kevin Wade Thompson, 73, of Lomax, Illinois, passed away at 5:50 p.m. Thursday, September 3, 2026, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in West Burlington, Iowa.

Kevin was born December 20, 1952, in LaHarpe, Illinois, the son of Robert H. and Joyce Thompson and Nancy (Osburn) Pennock. Earlier in life, he married Debra Musgrove. They later divorced. On May 1, 1987, he married Teresa Ann Brown in Lawton, Oklahoma. She preceded him in death on December 21, 2021.

Mr. Thompson was a 1970 graduate of Dallas City High School. Shortly after high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving as a Field Artillery Surveyor and Unit Supply Sergeant. He was Honorably Discharged after 17 years of service. Following his service, he received his teaching certificate. He taught for Vision Quest in Arizona and Florida before returning to Lomax, where he continued to substitute teach at local schools.

Kevin was an avid sports fan; he especially enjoyed following his family members’ sporting events and his beloved Chicago Cubs. He enjoyed helping others and would often volunteer to drive other Veterans to their appointments when needed.

Earlier in life, he married Debra Musgrove. They later divorced. On May 1, 1987, he married Teresa Ann Brown in Lawton, Oklahoma. She preceded him in death on December 21, 2021.Mr. Thompson was a 1970 graduate of Dallas City High School. Shortly after high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving as a Field Artillery Surveyor and Unit Supply Sergeant. He was Honorably Discharged after 17 years of service. Following his service, he received his teaching certificate. He taught for Vision Quest in Arizona and Florida before returning to Lomax, where he continued to substitute teach at local schools.Kevin was an avid sports fan; he especially enjoyed following his family members’ sporting events and his beloved Chicago Cubs. Phyllis Mary Ann (Denning) Steffensmeier, 92, of the Houghton area, passed away on Friday, August 28, 2026.

She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends and especially enjoyed playing cards. Her warm smile, caring nature and unwavering devotion to her family will be remembered and cherished by all whose lives she touched.

La Von Joyce Vantiger, 92, of Mediapolis, formerly of West Point, died Friday, September 4, 2026, at Azria Health Prairie Ridge in Mediapolis.&nbsp;&nbsp;She was born April 22, 1934, to James Earl Knous and Velda Louise Anderson Pearson.&nbsp;&nbsp;She was raised a mile and a half south of Lowell and was a graduate of Mt. Pleasant High School.&nbsp;&nbsp;La Von was a member of the Denmark Congregational Church, where she sang in the church choir and also for weddings and funerals.&nbsp;&nbsp;

She married George Dennis Moore, and they later divorced.&nbsp;&nbsp;She then married Carl W. Vantiger, who preceded her in death.

La Von spent many years working in floral nurseries and was an accomplished artist, having sold many of her oil paintings.&nbsp;&nbsp;She loved flowers, working in her flower beds, and vegetable gardening, at one time having fifty-two pots!&nbsp;&nbsp;She raised her grandson Steven and her great-grandson Zachery until he was ten years old.&nbsp;&nbsp;Her claim to fame is being on radio station WHO, singing with Fred Astaire and Songfellos at the age of fifteen.

Survivors include her daughter Deborah Carter of West Burlington; son Jeffrey (Penny) Vantiger of Ft. Madison; half-brothers Larry (Berta) Pearson of New London and Gary (Denise) Knous of Sperry; half-sister Judy (Wes) Knous-Bruning of Oregon; seven grandchildren; eighteen great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.&nbsp;&nbsp;Besides her parents and husband Carl, she was preceded in death by half-brothers Leon Pearson and Ronnie Knous; and her sister Ann Thornton.

Beverly Ann Ort, 78, of Croton, Iowa, passed away at 6:11 a.m. Wednesday, September 2, 2026, at Blessing Hospital in Quincy, Illinois.

She was born on February 10, 1948, in Fort Madison, Iowa, the daughter of Ennos Walter and Eilean Louise (Blincoe) Wiseman. She married Mel Ort at the Embury United Methodist Church in rural Donnellson. They were married for twelve years.

She is survived by her son, Roy (Alice) Ort of Holland, Michigan; grandchildren: Maxwell, Jon, Evelyn; bonus daughter: Dianna Fellows; brother: Robert (Carla) Wiseman of Chehalis, Washington; and sister, Jan (Dave) Allburn of Glouster, Ohio. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers: Neil and Ryan Wiseman.

Bev was a lifelong farmer and worked at Iowa Army Ammunition Plant. She was a devoted member of Embury United Methodist Church, where she played the organ for many years. She loved Jesus, Busch Light and giving friends a hard time.

A visitation will be held from 12:00 noon to 6:00 p.m. Thursday, September 10, 2026, at Schmitz Funeral Home in Donnellson, where the family will receive friends from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, September 11, 2026, at Embury United Methodist Church in rural Donnellson, with Pastor Nancy St. Clair officiating.

Burial will be at Embury Cemetery, rural Donnellson.

LaVerne J. Miller, 101, of Iowa City, Iowa, passed away peacefully on August 13, 2026. She was born November 26, 1924, in Minneapolis, Minnesota to George and Agnes Hendrickson, attending grade school and high school in Minneapolis. Following graduation, she worked as a bank teller and as an airline stewardess. In 1949, she married Everett Woodrow Miller and moved with him to Des Moines, Iowa. After brief stays in Des Moines, Grinnell, and Oakville, Iowa, they moved in 1956 to Burlington, Iowa, where Everett worked as a manager for Montgomery Wards. Sons Steven and John were born in 1952 and 1954. Following Everett's death in 1971, LaVerne worked as an executive assistant at Champion Products in Burlington. In 1956, John was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia Ossificans Progressiva, a rare and painful muscle disease that progressed until he was left bedridden shortly after High School. LaVerne provided him with loving care in her home for the next forty years. Following John's death in 2017, she moved to Melrose Meadows, a retirement community in Iowa City, Iowa, to be closer to Steve and his family. LaVerne is survived by her son Steven Paul Miller and his wife Ann Marie Rhodes of Iowa City, granddaughters Kathleen Kennedy Miller, Elizabeth Rhodes Miller, and Mary Caroline Rhodes, and great-grandchildren Lachlan and Callum Miller. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Everett, sister Lorraine Hendrickson, brother George Hendrickson, and son John. Barbara Donna Anderson, 85, of Burlington, died Sunday, August 30, 2026, at the Klein Center in West Burlington. Born December 12, 1940, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Donald Henry and Esther Barbara Haubenschild Hallberg. On August 8, 1962, she married Robert Manly Anderson at Trinity Lutheran Church, Burlington. He died on May 20, 2017. Barbara worked as a data processor for the hospital and as a paycheck processor for J.I. Case. She was very active in TOPS and recorded their weekly meetings. Barbara loved crafting, especially crocheting and ceramics. She liked to watch Wheel of Fortune and the Cardinals play baseball. Barbara and Robert loved watching racing; whether it was NASCAR, Sprint Car, Indy 500 races and especially cheering her family during their races. She had a deep love for her family and was so proud to see the success they achieved throughout their lives. Barbara Donna Anderson

Donna J. Pence, 93, of Burlington, died Monday morning, August 31, 2026 at the OakView in Burlington.

She was born on February 22, 1933, in Burlington, Iowa, the daughter of Paul and Isabelle Anderson. On October 30, 1955, she married George S. Pence, and he preceded her in death on March 13, 2006.

Donna graduated from Burlington High School in 1951. She worked at National Research, Sylvania, Dr. Milford Nelson, Drs. Nelson and Taylor, and then at Trailways as a travel tour hostess for 15 years; her ideal job!

Donna loved people and never knew a stranger. She always had a smile, loved to give hugs and receive them, was a very humble person, had a positive attitude, a great personality, loving and shared with joy in her heart.

She loved to travel, especially to Las Vegas, going out to lunch with friends, watching birds on the feeder, reading and listening to instrumental music, and going to the casino.

Donna is survived by many friends and neighbors.

The word Goodbye was not in her vocabulary, so she always said, “I’ll see ya! “

Pence, 93, of Burlington, died Monday morning, August 31, 2026 at the OakView in Burlington.She was born on February 22, 1933, in Burlington, Iowa, the daughter of Paul and Isabelle Anderson. On October 30, 1955, she married George S. Pence, and he preceded her in death on March 13, 2006.Donna graduated from Burlington High School in 1951. She worked at National Research, Sylvania, Dr. Milford Nelson, Drs. Nelson and Taylor, and then at Trailways as a travel tour hostess for 15 years; her ideal job!Donna loved people and never knew a stranger. She always had a smile, loved to give hugs and receive them, was a very humble person, had a positive attitude, a great personality, loving and shared with joy in her heart.She loved to travel, especially to Las Vegas, going out to lunch with friends, watching birds on the feeder, reading and listening to instrumental music, and going to the casino.Donna is survived by many friends and neighbors.The word Goodbye was not in her vocabulary, so she always said, “I’ll see ya! “Special Thank You to the Staff and her family at OakView and Compassus Hospice of Washington for taking care of her.The memorial graveside service for Donna J.
