A lot of Joy has gone out of the world for the relatives and friends of Joy Geddes, 103, of Arlington Heights, Ill. This beloved sister, aunt, and great aunt to many, joined her parents and siblings in a better world on December 16, 2025. Born 22 May 1922 in La Harpe, Hancock County, Illinois, she brought Joy (both figuratively and literally) to everyone she met in her long, fascinating, and influential life.

Joy was a pioneer flight attendant, first with Capital Airlines out of Washington DC, then with United Airlines out of Chicago. Although she rose to become United’s Chief Flight Attendant, she volunteered to go back on flight duty to assist refugees on those last desperate flights out of Vietnam. In 1974, she was named the&nbsp;“Flight Attendant of the Year” at United Airlines.

Flying afforded Joy the opportunity to travel the world. Home movies, and later videos of her adventures, were the highlight of every family gathering. Her photography and her Christmas letters inspired generations to model her adventuresome life.

Being single was mandatory during her early years with the airlines. Joy never married, and, throughout her life, she campaigned doggedly for women’s rights. Her great nieces remember fondly that Joy gave them quarters to use to call her for help if they ever felt unsafe.

After retirement in 1984, she continued to spread Joyfulness by singing with a community choir, even after she lost her sight. A natural bell soprano, Joy had sung with the Pittsburgh Opera Company when she was stationed there. Her thrill for music will live on through the great nieces who now direct or sing with choirs across the continent.

Joy never forgot a birthday or a special occasion and Joyously celebrated the usually less remarkable achievements of other family members. She showed everyone how to live with grace and purpose - and Joy.

Joy is sorely missed by her surviving family - sister-in-law, Erma Geddes of Iowa; nephews John Lynn of Illinois, Brett and Tom Geddes of Texas; nieces Karen Mitchell of North Carolina and Barbara Shave of British Columbia; many great nieces and nephews; and special friend, Barb Sakely. She was predeceased by her parents Allen G. and Edna Montague Geddes of Fountain Green, Illinois, brother Allan&nbsp;“Monte” Geddes of Mediapolis, Iowa, and sister Jean K. Lynn of Peoria, Illinois.

Harold Dean Massner, 88, of Burlington, died Sunday, May 10, 2026, at his home. Born September 4, 1937, in Louisa County, he was the son of Adolph and Rose Reber Massner. &nbsp;He married Annette Rocke on December 13, 1964.

He served in the Army during the Korean Conflict.

Harold was a long-time salesman, starting with Super Cross seed corn.&nbsp; He was a member of Harmony Bible Church.

Because of his success with Super Cross, Harold was able to extensively travel all over the world and make many memories.&nbsp; He loved his job and the customers he encountered and truly did not know a stranger.&nbsp; Harold sponsored a Laotian family to come to the United States, and they soon became his family as well. He would share his love of Jesus to all and enjoyed his time spent with his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Annette Massner of Burlington; three children, Corbin (Diane) Massner of Georgia, Crystal (Mitch) Timmerman of Mediapolis and Craig (Elaine) Massner of Naperville, Illinois; six grandchildren, Dillon Timmerman, Ethan (Lily) Timmerman, Tristan Timmerman, Owen Timmerman, Sajan Massner and Sevahn Massner; two great grandchildren, Sydney Day and Adalyn Day; brother Lloyd Massner of Mediapolis; sister Dorothy (Richard) Taeger of Burlington and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, grandson Chase Massner, and siblings, Clarence, William, Earl, Eric, Virgil, Adolphus “Doss”, Kenneth, Dale, Allen, and Rosella.

Mary Kay “Kay” Mohrfeld,&nbsp;85, of West Point, Iowa, passed away at 1:45 p.m. Monday, May 11, 2026, at The Birkwood Village in Fort Madison.

She was born on February 17, 1941 in Colwich, Kansas, the daughter of Alphons and Cecilia (Spexarth) Eck. On June 30, 1962 she married Francis J. “Frank” Mohrfeld in Colwich, Kansas.

She is survived by three daughters: Terri Askegaard, Jan (Dan) Kramer, Karen (Pat) Petelin;&nbsp; Six Grandchildren: Anna (Avery), TJ (Megan), David, Beth, Matt (Samantha), Gabe; Great - grandchildren: Emma Kay, Ben, Caden, Kenzie Kay, Callan; three sisters: Carol Dugan, Celi Goff, Nancy Denton; and brother Ivan Eck. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters: Lou Ann Bergkamp, Helen Orth; and brother Frank Eck.

&nbsp;Kay was a member of St. James the Less Catholic Church, the Altar and Rosary Society. A past member of the Fort Madison Chamber of Commerce. She was a graduate of Andale High School, and retired from Lee County Bank as a Loan Officer. Kay enjoyed golfing, entertaining, wintering in Arizona, traveling, and her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, May 15, 2026 at St. James the Less Catholic Church in St. Paul, with Father Dan Dorau as celebrant. The family will receive friends following the Mass at the St. James Parish Center in St. Paul.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 4:00 p.m. Friday, May 15, 2026 at The Point 95 in West Point.

Burial will be at a later date in St. James Cemetery in St. Paul.

Mary Kay “Kay” Mohrfeld

James C. Lens, 85, of Coralville, formerly of Burlington, passed away surrounded by his family on Thursday, May 7, 2026. Born on February 14, 1941, in Sioux Falls, S.D., he was the son of Charles and Agatha (Underberg) Lens. He married Colleen S. Domino on June 30, 1976, in Marcus, Iowa.

Jim was a graduate of Rock Rapids High School in Rock Rapids. He received a bachelor's degree in education from Westmar College and a master's degree in administration from Kearney State College. Jim started his career as an elementary teacher in Marcus, and later became the elementary school principal. In 1987, Jim took a position with Burlington Community School District as the Sunnyside Elementary school principal. Jim worked in public education for forty-five years until his retirement in 2001.

Jim was a member of the Rotary Club in Marcus, the National Association of Elementary School Principals, the School Administrators of Iowa, and St. Mary’s Catholic Church. In his free time, he enjoyed golfing, watching sports, participating in fantasy baseball, gardening and doing yard work. He was an avid Iowa Hawkeye and St. Louis Cardinal fan. Family was his top priority and the grandchildren were his pride and joy.

He is survived by his wife Colleen of 49 years; two children: Joshua (Jill) Lens of Iowa City, and Stacey (Brian Crowley) Lens of Chicago; three grandchildren: Hannah, Gretchen and Brandon Lens of Iowa City; three siblings: Alice (Gerry) Moeller of Rock Rapids, John Lens of Monterey, Calif., and David Lens of Grand Junction, Co.&nbsp; Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his daughter Bethine Ann; grandson Caleb Marcus; parents, and several siblings.

The visitation for Jim will be held from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 12, 2026, at Lunning Chapel Burlington, IA where the family will meet with family and friends.

James C. Lens

Wanda Dean Johnson, 83, of Burlington, died Thursday, May 7, 2026, at the Klein Center in West Burlington.

Born May 26, 1942, in Birmingham, Alabama, she was the daughter of Charles Earl and Dorothy Dean Olvey. On December 18, 1976, she married Ronald W. Johnson in Birmingham. He died on February 8, 2025, in Burlington.&nbsp;

Dean graduated in 1963 from Birmingham Baptist School of Nursing (The Moffett and Sanders School of Nursing at Samford University) as a Registered Nurse (RN) under the expert tutelage of Ida B. Moffett. &nbsp;Ms. Moffett took an interest in Dean and personally arranged for her to receive a full scholarship to the University of Alabama - Roll Tide Roll; here, in 1965, she earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN). &nbsp;Dean’s fellow nursing students famously aided and abetted Dean with her quests to escape the critical eye of &nbsp;“Miss Moffett,” and more often than not, Dean’s inability to corral her curls under the traditional white nurses’ cap threatened to disrupt her cohort’s harmony. Dean was later offered a prestigious position in leadership at Quarterback Tower, but passed on the opportunity to balance time with her family. &nbsp;She spent most of her career as a BSN, RN in intensive/critical-care settings, thriving as a leader and expert decision-maker despite her unruly hair.

Dean captivated all with her sparkling personality, effusive love, and gift of hospitality, regularly hosting gatherings of friends and family without breaking a sweat. She was the keeper of recipes in the family, learning from her grandmother’s tried and true apron strings. Smells of savory bacon and butter infused Dean’s Southern kitchen and accompanied legendary meals; interestingly, her baking skills suffered from her unwillingness to follow strict instructions, often resulting in less-than-desirable sweet treats. This stubborn streak, however, was evident and served her well, assisting her with the decision to refuse her father’s pressures of secretarial school as well as her choice to pursue her career in nursing as a working wife and mother of three. &nbsp;Dean’s strong faith in Christ was central to her life, and she ensured her family was raised in the Baptist church. She and her husband, Ron became missionaries to Macas, Ecuador, in their retirement, fulfilling both their dedication to Christ and satiating their love of travel and exploration.

In Dean’s final chapter, she spent time in memory care due to the unrelenting ravages of frontotemporal dementia (FTD). &nbsp;While memories of lifelong friends and family vanished, she continued to live her best life - charming staff, making new friends, and dancing, smiling, and singing during every single occasion offered. &nbsp;As much as her husband and children missed her, they all also appreciated that her personality and love for Alabama football persisted. Her favorite people greeted her with “Roll Tide, Dean!” and sang hymns with her. Her end came peacefully, surrounded by family and supported by the unfailing care of the hospice team that chose to know her so well. She will be well remembered.

Survivors include her daughters, Amanda Johnson (Doug Glader) Winters of Burlington, and Stephanie (George "Chip") Davis Casey of Birmingham, AL; six grandchildren, Jake, Amy and Jamie Casey and Owen, Gwen and Lucy Winters; and one brother, Don (Lisa) Olvey of Birmingham.&nbsp;

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, brother Frank Olvey, and daughter Amy Lane Davis.

Services will be held in Birmingham, Alabama, where she will be laid to rest alongside her husband and daughter at Elmwood Cemetery.&nbsp;

The funeral for Dean and Ron will be held on Friday, May 15, at 2:00 PM at Johns-Rideout’s Mortuary — Elmwood Chapel with a graveside service to follow. Visitation for family and friends begins at 1:00 PM.

Wanda Dean Johnson

Jack L. Brown, 77, of West Burlington, died Tuesday, May 5, 2026, at his home.

Born December 19, 1948, in Burlington, he was the son of Charles G. and Ina " Jenny" James Bomar Brown. On November 21, 2007, he married Sherry A. Neff in Oquawka, Ill.&nbsp;

After graduating from high school, Jack attended Southeastern Community College. He was a true jack of all trades, taking on work that ranged from gunsmithing to driving semis.

He loved the outdoors; whether he was hunting, fishing, watching sprint car races riding motorcycles or looking for treasure with his metal detector. Jack also had a deep appreciation for music and could often be found listening to classic rock or playing his guitar.

Survivors include his wife, Sherry of West Burlington; ten children, Anthony C. (Kristi) Brown of Mt. Pleasant, Carry (Julius) Dampha of Des Moines, Roxanna (Lawrence) Gammage of Des Moines, Bradley (April) Dickenson of Ottumwa, Shawn Dickenson of Burlington, Krystal Dickenson of Burlington, Morgan (Lee) Williams, Ashley Dickenson of Burlington and Cody Lumberg of West Burlington; 32 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; brother, Lawrence T. Joanne C. Boyle, 88, of Burlington, died Thursday, May 7, 2026, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born June 16, 1937, in Burlington, she was the daughter of William Jesse and Mary Bernice Simms Daugherty. Joanne married Donald R. Morgan and together they had their five girls before they divorced. She married Steve Boyle, and together they shared 55 happy years filled with love and happiness.

Joanne began her career working in the pediatric ward at Burlington Medical Center. She later worked for IRC Resistor before spending 21 years with Sheaffer Pen Co. in Ft. Madison.

She was a member of Divine Mercy Parish. Joanne enjoyed crocheting, visiting the casino, and spending time on her computer, whether designing outfits or playing games. Above all else, she cherished the time she spent with her five daughters and her grandchildren, who brought her the greatest joy.

Survivors include her husband, Steve Boyle of Burlington; five daughters, Chris (Ken) Gregory of Burlington, Robin (Omer) Vahle of Burlington, Karen (Tom) George of Nassau Bay, TX, Lori (Rick Knutson) Morgan of Des Moines, and Lisa Morgan of Des Moines; five grandchildren, Eric (Crystal), Jamie (Amanda), Alex (Jessica), Rachel (Zack), and Jerica; seven great-grandchildren, Alyssa (Grant), Brett, Lexxi, Gabe, Lili, Liam and Emmy; sister-in-law, Edith Daugherty of Argyle and many nieces and nephews.

Owen Gilbert Heitmeier, 80, of Mediapolis, died Tuesday, May 5, 2026, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in West Burlington.

Born November 2, 1945, in Burlington, he was the son of Ralph and Mary Ellen Mull Heitmeier. On December 10, 1991, he married Genevieve Ann Pierce in Las Vegas, N.V. She died on March 10, 2019. Owen’s complete obituary and service details will be shared once they are finalized.

Curtis Flatt, 84, of Burlington, died Tuesday, May 5, 2026, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born May 14, 1941, in Aledo, Ill., he was the son of Elmer C. and Edith R. Southern Flatt. On September 3, 1961, he married Rita Mae Pinson at the Old Bedford Church in McDonough County, Ill.&nbsp;

He was a U.S. Navy Veteran, serving on the USS Seminole (AKA-104) during the Vietnam War from July 31, 1959 until July 29, 1961.

Curtis worked for General Electric for 36 years in various positions, retiring in 1997 as a Manufacturing Engineer.

He was a member of the First United Church of Christ in Burlington. Curtis was also a member of the General Electric ELFUs and Southeast Iowa Sheet Club. He enjoyed his family, friends, skeet shooting with his buddies, golfing, putting miles on his motorcycle, and winters at their former home in Florence, Ariz.

Survivors include his beloved wife of 65 years, Rita of Burlington; two sons, Scott E. (Wendi) Flatt of Middletown, and Mark (Nena) Flatt of Fishers, Ind.; four grandchildren, Danielle (Justin) Martin of Broken Arrow, Okla., Sean Flatt of Broken Arrow, Elsie (Sam) Phillips of San Clemente, Calif., and Arie (Rachel) Flatt of Fishers, Ind.; two step grandchildren, Abby Enhorning of Gattlingburg, Sweden and Todd Stewart of Dallas, Texas; 10 great-grandchildren, Landon, Kennedy, Skylar, Ryder, Mason, Kaia, Evie, Arie Jr., Indy, and Declan.

Kathleen Flynn Bright, 81, of North Liberty, Iowa, passed away peacefully on May 4, 2026, at The Bird House in Iowa City, Iowa.&nbsp;

Kathy was born on January 25, 1945, in Burlington, Iowa to Lloyd and Marian (Klotzbach) Flynn. After graduating from Burlington High School, Kathy attended the University of Iowa and received her bachelor’s degree in elementary education.

On April 30, 1965, she married Stephen Frederic Bright in Burlington and to their union five children were born: Patrick Allen, Brian James, Sara Hope, David Jason, and Amy Kathryn. Upon their graduations from the University of Iowa, Steve and Kathy resided in Oak Park, Illinois before returning to Iowa City in 1969, when Steve entered law school. They made their home there until 1996, when they moved to Jamison, Pennsylvania. In 2002, they moved to Salida, Colorado and returned to Iowa in 2024, residing in North Liberty.

Kathy spent her working life as an artist.&nbsp; She co-owned The Weaving Studio in Iowa City from 1983 until 1996 and later operated her own weaving business, Indian Hills Handwovens. In 1988, Kathy and Steve bought their first two llamas, Sinbad and Matisse. Within a few years, she had started a llama breeding business named Indian Hills Llamas, which she operated for more than thirty years on farms in Iowa City, Iowa; Buena Vista, Colorado; Jamison, Pennsylvania; and Salida, Colorado. Kathy was a quilter, knitter, spinner, ceramicist, painter, and jewelry maker, but above all, she was a weaver. She maintained a “loom room” in every family home for more than fifty years. Her award-winning works were recognized in publications and at wool festivals.

In her personal life, Kathy loved traveling, including many cruises and international trips, with her favorite being a trip to Africa with Steve. She loved reading, with James Galvin, Stephen King, and Jodi Picoult among her favorite writers. She was a musician, and played the piano, pipe organ, handbells, and dulcimer. She loved the color blue. She always enjoyed a good thunderstorm. She was a relentless rock collector. She made great doughnuts. Her greatest joy in her life was her family, and she treasured her time with them.

Kathy is survived by her devoted husband, Steve; three of her children: Sara Bright (Kevin Hebl), of Oxford, Iowa; David (Heather) Bright, of Iowa City, Iowa; and Amy (Dolan) Potts, of Salida, Colorado; seven grandchildren: Alexandra Bright, Andrew Braverman, Piper Bright, Truman Bright, Sullivan Bright, Kellen Forschmiedt, and Pepper Potts; her brother and sister-in-law, Tim and Val Flynn, of Incline Village, Nevada; her sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Diane and Fred Leavitt, of Piedmont, California; five nieces (Jennifer Flynn, Kelly Flynn, Megan Flynn, Jessica Leavitt, and Melanie Leavitt Cantarutti); and one nephew (Gavin Naumoff).&nbsp; She was preceded in death by her parents and two children: Patrick and Brian.

Kathy’s family is eternally thankful for the care that she received at The Bird House and through Iowa City Hospice. Her family is especially grateful to her caregivers, Chrismathe and Lauren, who helped her at a time of life when she needed it most.

Victoria Clo "Vickie" Hull, 72, of Burlington, died at 12:50 a.m. Wednesday, May 6, 2026, at her home, surrounded by her family.&nbsp; Born March 13th, 1954, in Burlington, Iowa, Vickie was the daughter of Kyle “Dude” and Doris Johnson. She married Rick Orth in 1974; they later divorced. On June 21, 1985, she married Tom Hull, and they spent 36 years together before his passing in 2021. Vickie spent over 40 years working as a nurse, taking care of anyone she met along the way and making lifelong friends.&nbsp; Vickie was an avid gardener and always enjoyed browsing flower catalogues with her Grandma Warth. She was a holiday enthusiast, celebrating each and every Halloween and Christmas to the fullest, pulling out all the stops. Known for singing as she walked about the house, she would often make up her own songs or simply change the words to any classic she desired. Vickie delighted in filling out a crossword puzzle or watching a Hallmark movie over a good cup of coffee. Above all, she was happiest when spending time with her family and friends.&nbsp; Survivors include Vickie’s sister Jane Eslami; brother Keith (Elaine) Johnson; three sons, Nick (Kayla) Hull, Dillon (Tabitha) Orth, Kris (Logan) Hull; two daughters, Amy (Rod) VanNiewaal, Ann (Spencer) Hill; ten grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren, with a 5th one on the way; and sister-in-law, Barb Johnson.  </figure>Betty Jo Dunkin, 79, of Burlington, died Tuesday, May 5, 2026, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in West Burlington. Born October 28, 1946, in Darlington, Mo., she was the daughter of Wm. Leo and Anna M. Malson Ellis. She married Donald Wayne Dunkin in Fort Madison, Iowa. He preceded her in death on April 21, 2015. She cherished time spent with her family and chauffeuring her grandkids around. She liked to sew. In her younger years, she kept a garden and enjoyed canning. Survivors include two sons, Larry (Moung) Dunkin of Burlington, and Brian Dunkin of Mt. Pleasant; two daughters, Donna &nbsp;(Mike) Stevens of Burlington, and Amy (Ryan) Lightfoot of Wever; 16 grandchildren, Jennifer Dunkin, Stephanie (Scott) Coursey, Tom (Katlynn) Dunkin, Sonya (Jon) Witt, Alyson (Ethan) Adamire, Brayton (Megan) Dunkin, Mariah (Logan) Boatwright, Jenna Grahm, Jayden Benesh, Cody (Olivia) Smith, Sierra (Adam) Bollin, Alex Nguyen, Brandon (Jayden) Nguyen, Calvin (Hunter) Nguyen, Darian (Kaisa) Lightfoot, and Jarrett Lightfoot; 28 great-grandchildren, Aaliya Myers, Keondra Nash, Kyra Nash, Kameron Segoviano, Caleb Coursey, Owen Dunkin, Madison Dunkin, Bennett Dunkin, Rowan Witt, Rylee Witt, Archer Witt, Gannon Leatherwood, Braxton Adamire, Waylon Adamire, Emma Dunkin, Jeremiah Dunkin, Ellawyn Dunkin, Elyce Dunkin, Jaycee Boatwright, Layla Boatwright, Rhett Boatwright, Tripp Boatwright, Jude Nguyen, Hudson Nguyen, Ezra Nguyen, Lincoln Nguyen, Hudson Smith, Hazel Smith, and another set of twins on the way; one sister, Cleta (Ron) Ettinger of King City, MO; one brother, Bob Ellis of Darlington, MO; and numerous nieces and nephews. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents.&nbsp; The Graveside Committal Service for Betty will be 1:00 PM Saturday, May 9, 2026, at Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery.&nbsp; A memorial has been established for the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House. Prugh Funeral Service is in care of the arrangements.

John Francis "Johnny" McAllister was welcomed into the arms of Jesus&nbsp;on Wednesday night, April 29th, 2026.&nbsp;&nbsp;He is now safe in his Heavenly Home.&nbsp;&nbsp;He loved everything about Jesus and felt Jesus was His Best Friend.&nbsp;

Johnny was born to Francis and Mary Salter McAllister in Muscatine, Iowa, on December 18, 1975.&nbsp;&nbsp;He was the youngest cousin on both sides of his family.&nbsp;&nbsp;From a toddler to his final day, Scooby Doo topped his list!&nbsp;&nbsp;Anything&nbsp;Scooby was A-OK.&nbsp;

When he was 3, his family moved to Burlington, Iowa.&nbsp;&nbsp;He started preschool at the AEA's Flint Hills school.&nbsp;&nbsp;Shortly before he turned 5, he became a student at Hope Haven School, then Central Ave. School, which eventually joined the Burlington School system. In Middle School, he attended Oak St. School, then Burlington High School.&nbsp;&nbsp;Scott Wood was his first teacher at Hope Haven School&nbsp;-&nbsp;and his last teacher at BHS.&nbsp;&nbsp;After graduating in 1997, he attended&nbsp;Hope&nbsp;Haven's Day Program. We want to thank all his educators and caretakers, who enriched his life so much.&nbsp;

Johnny&nbsp;grew up happy and more than a bit ornery.&nbsp;&nbsp;Once, when he was still little, his mother was trying to correct him.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;His Grandpa Woody Salter commented, "Don't try to knock all of that out of him.&nbsp; It just might be what gets him through life."&nbsp;

He enjoyed going to school and Hope Haven.&nbsp;&nbsp;He would happily wait for the bus while clapping his hands, singing his version of various songs, including 'We will, we will rock you'.&nbsp;&nbsp;He loved taking walks up to and around the high school, sometimes conning his family into 3 walks a day - one with his sister, Christy; one with Mom, and one with Dad.&nbsp;

Going to BHS&nbsp;Grayhound&nbsp;games with his mom and sister was a highlight. He was a big supporter of Coach Larry Heath and his Burlington&nbsp;Grayhound&nbsp;teams. He was&nbsp;always ready&nbsp;to go to the Burlington Bees baseball games with his&nbsp;Dad.&nbsp;&nbsp;He waited anxiously for the&nbsp;dances and other&nbsp;fun&nbsp;activities&nbsp;held by Partners (mentioned below).&nbsp;&nbsp;Once, a Dr. asked Johnny, "Do you ever see things which other people don't?" He answered quickly, “BEES”!&nbsp;&nbsp;(Mom shared who the Bees really were.)&nbsp;&nbsp;

Johnny was raised in the Presbyterian church.&nbsp;&nbsp;His&nbsp;long-term&nbsp;Sunday school teachers were Kathi Linn, Carl Snipes, and Curtis Blom.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Other kids would change classes, but over the years, he&nbsp;remained&nbsp;with these 3, who shared the love of Christ with him.&nbsp;

He often sat and watched people, especially their eyes.&nbsp;&nbsp;Sometimes,&nbsp;he’d&nbsp;notice tears in&nbsp;someone's&nbsp;eyes and&nbsp;ask, "You&nbsp;OK?"&nbsp;&nbsp; When his sister, Christy, was sick, he would sit beside her bedroom door, hoping she would get better soon.&nbsp;&nbsp;

In his 20's,&nbsp;John&nbsp;began struggling with his emotions and&nbsp;didn't&nbsp;understand what was happening to him.&nbsp;&nbsp;Eventually, he moved to Glenwood Resource Center in Glenwood, Iowa. John lived there from&nbsp;May of&nbsp;2006 to&nbsp;March of&nbsp;2024.&nbsp;&nbsp;His favorite job was shredding papers, since he could glance away and watch people.&nbsp;&nbsp;He became&nbsp;very attached&nbsp;to his caretakers there. They were more than&nbsp;caretakers,&nbsp;they were Family!&nbsp;&nbsp;That's&nbsp;when he fondly started calling his residence 'My House'.&nbsp;&nbsp;I wish I could name each one who helped him feel safe there. One worker, Dawn Post, was there the day he arrived and was still&nbsp;there on his last day.&nbsp;&nbsp;It was so&nbsp;very hard&nbsp;for him to leave Dawn and all the others. During his time at GRC, his parents and Christy often traveled many miles across Iowa on U.S. 34 to visit him.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Once, when out for breakfast, John grew&nbsp;very quiet&nbsp;and kept cautiously watching a group of men who were in camouflage with black stripes on their faces.&nbsp;&nbsp;Eventually, he leaned over and quietly questioned Mom, "Bad Guys?"&nbsp; Mom reassured him that the&nbsp;guys&nbsp;were okay and he&nbsp;was safe.

After his home at Glenwood Resource Center was closed, he found another loving home with his MYEP caretakers in Iowa City. He loved all his adventures during his two years with them.&nbsp;He and Christy had fun seeing each other every Thursday for MYEP's Day Hab. Last year's Prom was a very special event.&nbsp; We (his parents)&nbsp;can't&nbsp;say enough about the loving care everyone gave him, especially when he was finally released from the hospital.&nbsp;&nbsp;All he kept asking during those weeks was "My house?"&nbsp; He wanted desperately to...go home.&nbsp;&nbsp;Three of his 'home family', who knew him best (Breanna,&nbsp;Te'Ona, and Daisy) arranged their schedules so one of them was always with him -&nbsp;each and every&nbsp;hour.&nbsp;&nbsp;He had two happy&nbsp;days being&nbsp;home, gradually growing silent as he continued listening to those around him for 4 more days.&nbsp;&nbsp;Then, he was welcomed by Jesus and many loved ones to his Eternal Home.&nbsp;&nbsp;

John is survived by his blessed parents,&nbsp;Francis&nbsp;and Mary&nbsp;McAllister , and his&nbsp;much-loved&nbsp;big sister, Christy McAllister.&nbsp;&nbsp;Being with family was&nbsp;very important&nbsp;to him.&nbsp;&nbsp;Missing him will be his aunts and uncles: JoAnn Howe, Dorothy Swanson, Chuck Roegiers, and Linda Wymar, John and Nancy Salter, Frank and Donna Salter, and Cheryl Prosperi.&nbsp;&nbsp;Cousins: Cynthia Hill, Mary and Mike McLerran, Brenda Mennen, Terry and Debbie Royer, Bob Royer and Patti, Richard and Gretchen Temple, Chuck B. Roegiers and Melanie, Leigh Ann and David Dilley, Dawn and Jim Martinez, Doug Roegiers, Sherrie and Bob Koch, Mike Salter, Thad and Heather Salter and Melissa and Abram Steen, Mark and Diane Kohrs and Tonya&nbsp;(Kohrs)&nbsp;and Robert Barker.&nbsp;

Those welcoming him to Heaven are his grandparents, Everett and Flora Peterson McAllister, and Woody and Esther Moffitt Salter; his uncles and aunts, Richard and Donna McAllister, Roy Howe, Gary Swanson, Rosie Salter Roegiers, and Judi and Dick Kohrs, along with 3 of the Kohrs’&nbsp;children, Jeff Kohrs, Terri Stewart, and Michael Kohrs.&nbsp; He was also greeted by his&nbsp;very best&nbsp;buddy, Jason Lee Starr.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Henry Patrick “Pat” Stellern, 89, of Danville, died on May 2,2026 at Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in West Burlington, Iowa.

Born on February 4, 1937 in Fort Madison, Iowa. He was the son of Harry Patrick and Louise M. (Schulte) Stellern. He was a graduate of Fort Madison High School. He went on to serve in the United States Marines. He married Barbara Korschgen on October 16, 1965, in Burlington. She preceded him in death on October 17, 2016.

Pat worked at General Electric as a material planner until his retirement in 1996. He was a member of the Divine Mercy Parrish. He was a member of the Danville Athletic Booster Club, and even was a recipient of the Governor’s Volunteer of the Year award. Pat enjoyed farming, woodworking, volunteering at the school, sitting on his porch, and gardening.

He is survived by his children; William “Bill” J. (Brenda) Stellern of West Burlington, Iowa, Rick B. (Cindy) Stellern of Wapello, Iowa, and Kelly A. Stellern of Danville, Iowa; his grandchildren, Nick (Kiara) Stellern, Ali (Andy) Wachter, Forestt (Regan) Stellern, Tori (Cody Stice) Stellern, and Dakota (Kloey Edwards) Stellern, and his sister Sally Calvin.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, his sister Harriet, and brothers Tom, John, Bobby.

The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, May 8, 2026, at Saints Mary and Patrick Catholic Church in West Burlington. The Rev. Father Jacob Greiner will be the celebrant. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until the time of service. Burial will take place at St. Mary Cemetery in West Burlington.

Cremation has been accorded and entrusted to the care of Lunning Chapel.

Henry Patrick “Pat” Stellern

Terry L. Kemp, 83, of Burlington, Iowa, died Monday, May 4, 2026, at Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born on January 20, 1943, in Decorah, Illinois, he was the son of Robert and Betty Reynolds Kemp.

Terry was a United States Army veteran. He worked for Deery Brothers for twelve years in the detail shop and then worked for Burlington Produce in sales for fifteen years. Terry was a car enthusiast. He enjoyed reading, working on, detailing, reminiscing, driving, you name it, he loved it about cars. He enjoyed watching sports, especially March Madness, mushroom hunting, and was an avid reader. He is survived by his companion Linda Hanson; five children: Terry (Jessica) Kemp of Quincy, Illinois, Deborah Kemp of Burlington, John Vernoy of Burlington, Stacy (Gabe) Steele of West Point, Iowa, and Michaela Hanson of Burlington; twelve grandchildren; one great grandchild; three brothers: Donald Kemp of Sperry, Iowa, Michael Kemp of Burlington, and Robert (Enida) Kemp of Temple, Texas. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister Bonnie Garmoe and two sister’s in-law: Faye Kemp and Penny Kemp.

Per his wishes cremation has been entrusted and accorded to the care of Lunning Chapel.

The Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard will be conducting military rites at 2:30 p.m. Friday, May 8, 2026, at Lunning Chapel. The visitation for Terry will be held at 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Friday, May 8, 2026, at Lunning Chapel where the family will meet with friends.

A memorial has been established in his memory.

Robert Zeh

Brian James Franklin, 51, left this world on April 21, 2026, as the result of a motorcycle accident. Brian was born on Nov. 28, 1974, in Burlington, Iowa. He was the son of Jim and Nancy Franklin.

Brian graduated from West Burlington High School and served his country in the Army during the Gulf War. He spent time in Arizona, Illinois, and Iowa, where he made many life-long friends. He enjoyed golf, fishing, and was very active in his church and community in Des Moines. He was the helping hand to everyone he saw in need.

Brian was a joy to be around. His friends have said he had the biggest personality in any room with a perfect smile and a laugh that went with it. We still see him with his Oakley sunglasses on his forehead. He loved being a part of the Hope+Elim Men’s Ministry. On Saturday mornings, he helped cook and serve. He joined the congregation to study God’s word. He was faithful in his daily attendance and service at the church by helping to do whatever was needed to be done whether inside or outside. That was Brian. His church was a lighthouse in the community. Brian had a beautiful bright light that shone every day as he served with a smile and with compassion.

His death is heartbreaking to so many. The mantra that he lived by was “This is your LIFE. Do what you love and do it often.” Brian loved helping others. He had a poster in his home that completed his thoughts with: “Life is short. Live your dream and share your passion.”

To all the friends and family who loved him, please know he loved you too forever and for always.

Brian was preceded in death by his father, Jim; three uncles, Dennis, Marty, and Tom Menke; and his aunts, Janice Driscoll and Judy Franklin. He is survived by his mother, Nancy; his sisters, Molly (Mark) Ostap and Amy Franklin; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Services will be held in Hope+Elim Church in Des Moines on Saturday, May 23. Visitation will be at 1 p.m. with services at 2 p.m. on that date.

Michael Herbert Hoelzen, 83, of Danville, died Monday, May 4, 2026 at Addington Place, Burlington.&nbsp;&nbsp;He was born October 5, 1942, in Burlington to Robert Hugo and Laverne Bodkin Hoelzen.&nbsp;&nbsp;Mike was a 1960 graduate of Sperry High School and attended some college classes following high school.&nbsp;&nbsp;On January 12, 1963, he married Claudia Jean Stucker at Shinar Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Pleasant Grove.&nbsp;

He worked in the Airline Industry for over thirty-five years and was a member of Harmony Bible Church.&nbsp;&nbsp;Mike was an avid gardener and woodworker and dearly loved his cats, Missy and Junior.

Besides his wife, he is survived by his children Brian (Marcia) Hoelzen of Bellingham, Washington and Michelle (Rob) Lecuyer of Azle, Texas; three grandchildren, Alex (Rachel) Hoelzen, Chelsea Vowell and Courtney (Ethan) Franklin; five great-grandchildren, Lilah Beth, Dawson, Logan, Archer and Brooks; brothers Randy (Donnalee) Hoelzen of West Salem, Wisconsin and Dave (Berit) Hoelzen of Burlington; and many loving cousins.&nbsp;&nbsp;He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Steve Hoelzen.

John "Jack" A. Schuldt, 90, of Burlington, died Sunday, May 3, 2026, at the Addington Place in Burlington.

John Adam Schuldt was born on November 5, 1935, in Wagner, South Dakota, the son of Louis Edward and Sylvia Lillian (Stedronksy) Schuldt. &nbsp;Jack graduated from Wagner Community High School in 1954. &nbsp;He served with the South Dakota National Guard before going on to graduate from Dakota Wesleyan University in 1958 and from the University of Southern California in 1960 where he received his degree in physical therapy. &nbsp;Jack was united in marriage to Maxine Novak on June 19, 1956, in Wagner, South Dakota.

Jack played football throughout high school and went on to play at Dakota Wesleyan. &nbsp;Jack worked in construction as a young adult before transitioning to physical therapy. &nbsp;Jack was a physical therapist for 9 years at Wahpeton Rehabilitation Center in North Dakota, before moving to Burlington and managing the Managed Rehabilitation Unit at the old Klein Center. &nbsp;He then worked for 38 years at Burlington Medical Center. &nbsp;Jack was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, where he served on numerous boards and committees. He was also a member of the Varatis Class Young Couples Club, Masonic Lodge, Moose Lodge, Elks Club, and Burlington JC's. &nbsp;Jack served on the board at Southeast Iowa Community College as well. &nbsp;Over the years, Jack has enjoyed golfing, hunting, fishing, bowling, and playing Pinochle and Bridge. &nbsp;He was an avid Iowa Hawkeye and Chicago Cubs fan.

Jack is survived by his wife, Maxine, of Burlington; children, Debra Nafziger of Wever, Tamara (Rick) Venenga of Waterloo, and John (Janice) Schuldt of Burlington; grandchildren, Kristen (Rusty) Brookhiser, Matthew Hill, Hannah Schuldt, and Jaden Schuldt; and great -grandchildren, Kaitlynn (John) Walter, Hunter and Ryder Brookhiser.

He is preceded in death by his parents and one sister, LaVonne.

Visitation will be from 9:30 AM until 11:00 AM, Saturday, May 9, 2026 at Prugh Funeral Service, 3940 Division Street. &nbsp;A memorial service for Jack will conclude the visitation at 11:00 AM with Reverend Tamara Wirt officiating. &nbsp;A time of food and fellowship will be held in the community room at Prugh Funeral Service following the service.

Chris Michael Mehaffy, 71, of Burlington, died Friday, May 1, 2026, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born July 17, 1954, in Burlington, he was the son of David W. and Jenny Lee Gabel Mehaffy. On September 16, 1978, he married Cindy Conard &nbsp;in Crapo Park in Burlington.&nbsp;

He graduated from Burlington High School and went on to further his education through trade school. Later in life, he also attended SCC.

Chris spent many years working for Burlington Northern Railroad as a “gandy dancer,” helping lay and maintain the tracks that kept trains moving.

Chris was an outdoorsman. He loved being outside; whether it be any type of hunting, trapping, fishing, or spending time along the river, where he felt most at home.

Survivors include his wife, Cindy Mehaffy of Burlington; three children, Chevonne Mehaffy of Cedar Rapids, Lucas (Sarah) Mehaffy of Mediapolis, and Noah (Alisha) Mehaffy of Mt. Pleasant; six grandchildren, Griffen, Ayla, Evelyn, Delayni, Bristol, and Vivian; brother, Steve Mehaffy of Burlington; and sister, Martha (Chris) Inghram of Burlington.

Chris Michael Mehaffy

John Curtis Lyons, 59, of Burlington, died Friday, May 1, 2026, in Burlington.

Born May 10, 1966, in Burlington, he was the son of Curtis Ray and Joyce Ann Tiedeman Lyons.&nbsp;

John worked as a barber but most recently he worked for Champion.

He was a quick learner, with a natural creativity that shaped everything he did. John was always immersed in music, sewing, or creating portraits, constantly finding new ways to express himself. His artistic spirit carried into his dreams, including his hope of one day owning his own motorcycle.

Survivors include his parents, Curtis and Joyce Lyons of Burlington; sister, Lisa (Eric) Erlewine of New London; nephew, Justin Rettig; aunt, Nancy Steege of Larkspur, CO; and special friend, Virgina Lumpayap Kugler of Burlington.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents and infant daughter, Savannah.&nbsp;

 </figure>John Curtis Lyons, 59, of Burlington, died Friday, May 1, 2026, in Burlington.Born May 10, 1966, in Burlington, he was the son of Curtis Ray and Joyce Ann Tiedeman Lyons.&nbsp;John worked as a barber but most recently he worked for Champion.He was a quick learner, with a natural creativity that shaped everything he did. John was always immersed in music, sewing, or creating portraits, constantly finding new ways to express himself. His artistic spirit carried into his dreams, including his hope of one day owning his own motorcycle.Survivors include his parents, Curtis and Joyce Lyons of Burlington; sister, Lisa (Eric) Erlewine of New London; nephew, Justin Rettig; aunt, Nancy Steege of Larkspur, CO; and special friend, Virgina Lumpayap Kugler of Burlington.He was preceded in death by his grandparents and infant daughter, Savannah.&nbsp;Services will be held at a later date.

Katherine Whitmore, 63, of Burlington, died Thursday, April 30, 2026, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice in West Burlington with family by her side after a hard-fought battle with Parkinson's disease. Born November 2, 1962, in Burlington, she was the daughter of John and Phyllis Beckman Brueck. On September 8, 1984, she married Steve Whitmore.

Kathy grew up in Burlington and attended Burlington Notre Dame. &nbsp;She had an illustrious softball career, starting with the Nikes in 1977 and becoming one of the most dominant pitchers in Iowa High School Softball history. She compiled a career win-loss record of 197 wins and 33 losses, tossing 4 perfect games, 22 shutouts and 1,083 strikeouts. She was a five-time all-state selection and inducted to both the Burlington Notre Dame Hall of Fame and the Iowa High School Girls Softball Hall of Fame. In 1981, she was the first All Stater in Notre Dame Girl's history to earn 1st team honors, even while pitching 14 games in a walking cast due to a broken ankle. After a stint on the Western Illinois Softball team, she returned home to marry her high school sweetheart, Steve Whitmore. Steve and Kathy built a truly special life together, creating countless memories over the years.&nbsp;

Kathy had a successful 33-year career at F&amp;M Bank. She started in the bookkeeping department, advanced to loan clerk, and then branch manager, with her final role before retirement as a customer service representative. Her desk was placed near the front entrance of the bank, making her the first person many customers saw when they walked through the door-exactly where she belonged. Kathy loved greeting people, and clients loved being greeted by her. Her top‑notch customer service, kindness, and genuine care left a lasting impression on countless customers.

Kathy was a fun, caring, and incredibly thoughtful person. To say her passion in life was her family is an understatement. From sending cards in the mail saying, “Just wanted you to know I’m thinking of you,” to putting on a brave face and rolling around on the floor with her grandkids despite her pain, her love was always present. When her health allowed she never wanted to miss a game-she was her children’s and grandchildren’s biggest fan and supporter. You could always hear her yelling, “That’s my boy/girl!” or “I’m so proud of you kids.” She also cherished the memories made on family vacations and also found joy in quiet nights at home with her family watching Wheel of Fortune. Her love is felt deeply by her children, who promised her they would continue to spread that same love to their own children.

While the disease fought hard to take everything from her, she persevered and fought every single day. Her generosity, grit, fight, and tenacity will not be forgotten. Her memory and legacy will be carried by all who love her.

Survivors include her husband of 41 years, Steve Whitmore; children, Travis (Brittany) Whitmore, and Samantha (Jacob) Deen; grandchildren, Isabelle Katherine Whitmore, Henry Whitmore, Jack Whitmore, and Jett Deen; siblings, Julie Barton, Sandi (Mike) Hays, Danny Brueck, Donny (Penny) Brueck, Sally Brueck, and Bryan (Lisa) Brueck; and several nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her sister, Vicki Brueck-Barton; and her parents.

Family will receive friends from 3:00 PM - 6:00 PM, concluding with a sharing of memories at 6:00 PM, on Tuesday, May 5, at St. John Catholic Church (700 Division St, Burlington).

The Funeral Mass of the Resurrection for Kathy will be 10:00 AM, Wednesday, May 6 at St. John Catholic Church with Fr. Jake Greiner as the Celebrant. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. A time of food and fellowship will be held in the St. John's Cafeteria following the burial.

A memorial has been established and funds may be written to her family.
