Timothy Paul Mack, 72, of Burlington, died Sunday, Oct. 6, 2024, in Burlington.

Born Feb. 22, 1952, in Burlington, he was the son of Paul W. and Mary Alice Mack.

After graduating from Burlington High School, Tim was drafted into the U.S. Army. &nbsp;Once his service had concluded, Tim married and began a family in Peoria, Ill.&nbsp; He and his wife, Mary Kay had three more children in Colorado, and later settled in Venice, Florida to raise their children by the Gulf.&nbsp;

In his profession, Tim worked many hardworking years as a project manager and contractor. &nbsp;More importantly to him and his family, he taught his four children good values, kindness, calmness, and to find laughter in life. They also all have fond memories of their dad participating in their sports, either by cheering them on or coaching.&nbsp;

Tim returned to Burlington in 2014 to be closer to his Iowan family. &nbsp;He was a creative tinkerer and could always be found working on one of his various projects, such as his handmade boat or the hoverboard cart that he made and rode with his grandson, Keenan, at Riverside Park. He also enjoyed golfing, boating, and gardening.

Tim was a regular at Jerry's Main Lunch where he loved their kindness and friendship. &nbsp;He could also be found taking in the view by the river.&nbsp;

Family include his four children Corinne (Mark Shepherd) Mack, Leah (Sidney) Roberts, T.J. (Jessica) Mack, and Meredith Mack; former wife and mother of their children Mary Kay Chesna; nine grandchildren, Keenan, Mason, Ellie, Grace, Eliza, Holden, Palmer, Emerson, and Marina; his mother, Mary Alice Mack; two siblings, Paula (Steve) Stoller and Doug Mack; sister-in-law, Mary Mack; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Paul Mack, brother, Dennis Mack, sister-in-law, Theresa Mack, and grandson, Evan Mack.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh Crematory.

There will be no formal services but Tim would have liked it if you had a burger in his memory at Jerry's Main.

Robert L. "Bob" Knoll, founder and owner of Heartland Harley-Davidson, died Monday, Oct. 7, 2024, surrounded by family at his home in Burlington. &nbsp;He was 74 years old.

Bob was born June 4, 1950 in Erie, Pa., the son of Robert and Eva Kerr Knoll.&nbsp;

Bob was a very energetic, passionate and adventurous soul. &nbsp;He loved speed and found it through racing, motorcycles and aviation. &nbsp;He appreciated the beauty of classic cars and had numerous throughout his life. &nbsp;He was a member of the Stearman Biplane community and enjoyed attending the Galesburg Stearman Fly-in. &nbsp;Bob was very passionate about Heartland Harley-Davidson. &nbsp;It allowed him to connect to so many people and introduced him to his wife of 27 years, Jane. &nbsp;It meant so much to him to joke, laugh and share stories with everyone who came to cruise nights and supported his business. &nbsp;He loved being a part of the Burlington community. &nbsp;Moreover, Bob's family and friends meant the world to him.

Bob's kindness, friendship and passion will be truly missed, but his memory and legacy will continue on through everyone who love him.

Velma Jean Upton, 93, of Burlington, died Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2024, at the Klein Center in West Burlington.

Born Nov. 6, 1930, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Earl Leslie and Elsie Mae Dearmin Smith. On July 1, 1960, she married Frank Orville Upton in Kahoka, Mo.

Velma was a member of First United Methodist Church. She loved sewing, quilting, reading and jigsaw puzzles. Velma enjoyed tending to her plants and loved her roses. &nbsp;Her kindness and love for her family will be deeply missed, but her memory will continue on through the hearts she touched.

Her family includes her children, Craig (Lori) Upton of Fla., Lori (the late Dave) McCreight of Sperry, Cheryl (the late Sam) Ross of Burlington; grandchildren, Bryon Upton, Brandon Upton, Josh Upton, Daniel (Jackie) McCreight, Jessica (Brandon) Yaley, and John (Janelle) Rodgers; &nbsp;great-grandchildren, Max Gerst, Mary Gerst, Leonard McCreight, Elijah Rodgers and Weston Rodgers; siblings, Veda Burkey of New London, Evelyn Vance of Burlington, and John Smith of Morning Sun.

John David Hostetter, 98, of West Burlington, died Sunday, Oct. 6, 2024, at his home in West Burlington.

Born April 2, 1926, in Pollock, Mo., he was the son of Henry W. and Mary L. Campbell Hostetter. On Oct. 5, 1946, he married Melbaline Hills in Burlington.&nbsp;

He worked for the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant as an Operating Engineer for 50 years, retiring in 1996.

John was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. &nbsp;He enjoyed working in his yard and going to the casino in his free time.

John's family include his daughter, Pamela Ann Bergquist of West Burlington; grandchildren, John &nbsp;(Billie) Hostetter of Burlington, Brian (Lydia) Bergquist of Danville, and Frank &nbsp;(Jennifer) Hostetter of Colins, Ga.; seven great-grandkids and 11 great-great grandkids; sister, Roberta Pruden of Hannibal, Mo.; and many nieces and nephews.

Sadly, John was preceded in death by his parents, wife Melba, son John Jr. and his wife Diane; grandson Roy Hostetter, two brothers and two sisters.

David Thomas Burgin, 61, of Burlington, died Sunday, Oct. 6, 2024, at his home.

Born on June 27, 1963, in Burlington, he was the son of L. Thomas “Tom” and Dorothy Bromann Burgin. In 1991, in Iowa City, he married Erin Williams. They later divorced.

David graduated from Burlington High School in 1981 and then attended Iowa State University. When David was younger, he was a part of Boy Scouts of America. He was awarded the Order of the Arrow and was an Eagle Scout. He had a very special cat Gizmo that he just adored. David enjoyed the outdoors, camping, canoeing and building camp fires. He was always so proud of his smoked meats and cheeses he would make and share with his daughter.

He is survived by his mother Dorothy Burgin of Burlington; daughter Christina (Robert) Burgin-DeGroat of New London; grandson Robert DeGroat Jr.; sister Linda (Scott) Webb of Des Moines and three cousins: Jennifer Burgin, David Dal Burgin and Timothy Burgin.

He was preceded in death by his grandmother Elsa Burgin; father Tom and ex-wife Erin Williams.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2024, at Community of Christ Church with High Priest Dale Warner officiating.

Per his wishes cremation has been entrusted and accorded to the care of Lunning Chapel.

David Thomas Burgin

Floyd James Krieger, 92 of Burlington, died Sunday, Oct. 6, 2024, at Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center.

Born Jan. 20, 1932, in Burlington, he was the son of Walter and Elsie Meyer Krieger.

Floyd graduated from Sperry High School as the Valedictorian in 1950. He played basketball and baseball during high school.

On April 10, 1955 he married Vera Helen Reinecke at Salem Lutheran Church in rural Burlington.

Floyd was a lifelong farmer. His senior year he was a bus driver and had a milk route. He was the treasurer for Salem Lutheran Church and Peace Lutheran Church. He liked to go bowling, golfing and he was a sports fan, especially cheering for the Chicago Cubs! Floyd loved playing cards and dominoes with friends and family. He loved coffee.

Survivors include his four children Steven (Reta) Krieger of Burlington, Jeffrey (Linda) Krieger of Fort Myers, Florida, Linda (Bill) Risenhoover of Bucyrus, Kansas, David (Marcia) Krieger of West Des Moines, Iowa; seven grandchildren Brian (Melissa) Krieger, Deanne (James) Lessard, Dan (Prissilla) Krieger, Jamie Risenhoover, Matthew (Parisa) Risenhoover, Laura (Ben) Lohmeier, Dennis (Jill) Krieger; 15 great grandchildren Olivia and Lauren Krieger, Jordan, Lillian, Noah, Zachary and Faith Lessard, Camila, Javier, Ximena Krieger, Cooper Risenhoover, Thomas, Lucas, Maren Lohmeier and Isaac Krieger.

Howard E Toops, 73, of Burlington, died Sunday, Oct. 6, 2024, at Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House.

Born July 19, 1951 in Kirksville, Mo., he was the son of Warren G. and Lois L. Gracey Toops.

He graduated from Clark County High School. Howard served his country in the United States Navy as a Corpman during the Vietnam war. Howard attended Southeastern Community College for two years before transferring to Truman State College in Kirksville and earning his Bachelor’s Degree in business.

He married Patricia A. Egley on Sept. 22, 1973 in Wayland, Mo.

Howard was a Manufacturing Quality Industrial Engineer retiring from Borghi USA in June 2006. After retirement he worked at Lowe’s for an additional 14 years. His main passions were serving the church, community and families. He sang in the choir, volunteered for the blood donation program and ran ice cream socials for First United Methodist. He was a 20+ gallon blood donor who also drove veterans to Iowa City and served on the Board of the Special Needs Foundation. He coached soccer and helped 4th graders with reading. All the while never losing his zest &amp; curiosity for travel.

Survivors include his wife Pati of Burlington; one daughter, Amanda (Evan) Hoapili of Melbourne, Florida; two sons Justin (Kate) Toops of Cocoa Beach, Florida and Nathan (Rachel) Toops of Burlington; nine grandchildren Evan II, Wiliam, Madeline, Raylee, Kai, Sage, Gabriel, Josephine, Alexander; one brother David (Laura) Toops of Ft. Myers, Florida.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Dennis and sister-in-law Betty.

Cremation has been accorded and entrusted to the care of Lunning Chapel.

The celebration of life for Howard will be Saturday Oct. 12 at the Loft from 2 to 4 p.m. The family requests everyone to wear party shirt or a Hawaiian-themed shirt.

Private Family Services and Military Rites will be held at Lunning Chapel with Pastor Ronnie Braggs officiating.

Paul L. Schenck, 66, of Disco, Ill., passed away at 9:07 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 5, 2024 at Memorial Hospital in Carthage, Ill.&nbsp; Paul was born June 3, 1958, in Monmouth, Ill., the son of Russell and Vera Todd Schenck. On June 6, 1987, he married Joanna Owsley in LaHarpe. She survives.

Paul was a 1977&nbsp; graduate of LaHarpe High School. During high school, he worked for King-Seeley Corporation. After graduation, he worked for Fruehauf Corporation for a short time before enlisting in the U.S. Marine Corps. Following his Honorable Discharge, he returned to Fruehauf’s before beginning a career at Case in Burlington, retiring in 2019.&nbsp; He enjoyed hunting, fishing, mowing the yard, and especially his granddaughter. He was a member of the UAW Local #807.&nbsp; Besides his wife, survivors include three children: Russell (Kelly) Schenck of LaHarpe, Daniel (Barbara) Schenck of Burlington, Iowa, and Melissa (Tyler) Monroe of Burlington; two granddaughters: Kim and Scarlett and one brother: Tod (Marlene) Schenck of Elkton, Maryland. Greta was born Dec.&nbsp; 26, 1936 in Burlington, the daughter of Herman Lester and Alice Ingeborg Gustafson Lee.&nbsp; She was a graduate of Mediapolis High School.&nbsp; On June 26, 1955, she married Roger Leroy Cling at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Mediapolis.&nbsp; To this union, 3 children were born.&nbsp; She was a devoted farm wife who had a servant heart to all, most notably were her years as a 4-H leader, hosting several exchange students, and various church committees.&nbsp;

She was proud of her Swedish heritage and enjoyed passing down Swedish traditions and recipes to the next generation.&nbsp; She was an accomplished seamstress, avid writer of poetry and short stories, a wonderful cook and baker famous for her homemade chocolate chip cookies and cream puffs.&nbsp; She enjoyed family get togethers, especially Christmas, watching her grandchildren’s sporting events and exhibiting their livestock.&nbsp; Camping at the Iowa State Fair was an annual family tradition. She was also an avid Iowa State fan and enjoyed tailgating until her health declined and then continued to follow on TV.

Greta is survived by her husband of 69 years, Roger Cling; son, Doug (Rena) Cling of Urbandale; daughters, Nancy Cling-bahner of Cincinnati, and Bronya (Steve) Metzger of West Des Moines; special nephew, Joe (Patti) Gerling of Ankeny and their family; grandchildren, Andrea (Jim) Reif, Aaron (Abby) Cling, Trevor (Adrienne) Bahner, Shay Bahner, Anna Bahner, Colton (McKenzie) Metzger, and Kylee (Jack) Sullivan; great-grand children, Lukas, Lara, Vivian, Emmett, Millie Jo, Quinn, and Charlie.&nbsp; Greta was preceded in death by her parents and grandparents.

Steven Robert Martin, 60, of Shell Rock, passed away at home on Thursday night, Oct. 3, 2024, of natural causes. Steve was born on July 11, 1964, in Burlington, the son of Connie Elaine Raid and Robert Laverne Martin. He graduated from Burlington High School in 1983 and earned his bachelor’s degree in fisheries and wildlife management from Iowa State University in 1988. Steve worked as a naturalist for Butler County Conservation and also as a Deputy Sheriff for the Butler County Sheriff’s Office. Steve was united in marriage to Teresa Marie Lehman on June 13, 2017. Steve loved the outdoors and spending time at the farm. He enjoyed fishing, duck hunting, and turkey hunting with Chris. Some knew him as “Nature Boy.” He also liked playing basketball, Butler County League Softball, pickleball, and golf. Spending time with friends and family was important to him, especially following Stacy’s softball teams and his granddaughter’s soccer games. Watching the Iowa Hawkeye games and woodworking were also among his favorite pastimes. He had a lifelong love for Golden Retrievers. Steve is survived by his wife, Teresa; three children, Chris Martin (Jake Cash) of Cedar Falls, Stacy Martin of Mason City, and Karly Lehman (Landon Balvanz) of Waverly; three granddaughters, Briella, Jazzmynn, and Stella; his sisters, Cherie (Hal) Reid of Burlington, Iowa and Tricia (Randy) Bolton of Osceola, Iowa; and a niece, Emma Bolton (Timber Kent). Stevn Robert Martin

Justin A. Mark, 43, of West Des Moines, died Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2024. Justin passed away at the University of Iowa Hospital after a courageous battle with Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis, a rare liver disease.

Justin was born to David Mark and Margaret “Margie” Deggendorf James on Nov. 22, 1980, in Burlington. Justin graduated from Burlington High School.

He worked for Kreg Tool in West Des Moines. Justin loved biking, baseball, and all things outdoors. During his time working at Reimen Gardens, he developed a passion for landscaping and gardening. He loved going to the local farmers markets. His family would often come to him for advice on their projects and he talked about someday having his own house with a yard to design. Every year Justin looked forward to the Mark Men’s Backbone Fishing Trip where he spent less time fishing and more time connecting with his Dad, brother, uncle, and brothers-in-law. Justin had a quiet nature but loved spending time with his many friends and large family. He had an infectious smile that would light up a room. He was an exceptional listener, full of joy and he spread his optimism to those around him. Justin was a walking jukebox and often interjected a funny or poignant song lyric into conversations. He had a biting sense of humor and loved to laugh with his family and friends. Justin loved travel and adventure: skydiving, whitewater rafting, and, after surviving gallbladder cancer, Justin threw his bike in the back of his car and drove around to different states he was interested in living. He would camp in his car at night and go exploring during the day. He ended up moving to Salt Lake City for a year before finding his way back home.

Justin was exceedingly generous and kind-hearted; to know him was to love him. He was loved deeply and will be greatly missed.

Justin A. Mark

Dorothy Ziglar French, 102, of Burlington, died Oct. 3, 2024, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in West Burlington.

Dorothy had many talents. She was musical and played the xylophone and recorder. She loved flowers and grew many varieties in her yard and always had a fresh bouquet on her kitchen table. Vegetable gardening was a must, and she grew and canned many for her family. She also sewed clothing for her children and made beautiful quilts for her family and for others. She knitted and crocheted afghans, booties, and hats for babies. Her special talent was helping anyone in need in any she could and with a smile on her face.

Born Sept. 17, 1922, in Burlington, she was the daughter of John Washington and Dora Schuster Ziglar. She married Harold Kirby French on April 5, 1942, in Burlington. He preceded her in death on Dec. 15, 1991.

Dorothy was a lifelong resident of Burlington and lived nearly all of her life in the house where she was born and raised. She was a homemaker and served as a Cub Scout den mother and as a Girl Scout troop leader. She was involved in the Heritage Quilt Club and volunteered at the Burlington Public Library and in several elementary schools in Burlington.

She was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church where she sang in the church choir and participated in the women’s society. She belonged to United Methodist Women and served as a district officer. She served two missions in Nicaragua. She lived her faith, which was a generous and broad-minded Christianity.

After raising her children, she traveled to Germany, Egypt, Israel, and Ecuador.

She is survived by her children: Peter (Marilyn) French of Council Bluffs, Iowa; John (Lucy) French of Irving, Texas; Paul (Suzanne) French of Burlington; Ruth French of Council Bluffs, Iowa; Mark French of Burlington; David (Lexie) French of Washington, Iowa; and Mary (Jeff) Rand of St. Louis, Missouri; and grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her son Jim French, and three brothers, John Ziglar, Richard Ziglar and Paul Ziglar.

A memorial has been established for the United Methodist Global Ministries project to provide fresh water for Central Congo.

The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, October 12 at Lunning Chapel. Pastor Nancy Sutherland will officiate. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 11 at Lunning Chapel where the family will receive friends.

 </figure>Dorothy Ziglar French, 102, of Burlington, died Oct. 3, 2024, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in West Burlington.Dorothy had many talents. She was musical and played the xylophone and recorder. She loved flowers and grew many varieties in her yard and always had a fresh bouquet on her kitchen table. Vegetable gardening was a must, and she grew and canned many for her family. She also sewed clothing for her children and made beautiful quilts for her family and for others. She knitted and crocheted afghans, booties, and hats for babies. Her special talent was helping anyone in need in any she could and with a smile on her face.Born Sept. 17, 1922, in Burlington, she was the daughter of John Washington and Dora Schuster Ziglar. She married Harold Kirby French on April 5, 1942, in Burlington. He preceded her in death on Dec. 15, 1991.Dorothy was a lifelong resident of Burlington and lived nearly all of her life in the house where she was born and raised. She was a homemaker and served as a Cub Scout den mother and as a Girl Scout troop leader. She was involved in the Heritage Quilt Club and volunteered at the Burlington Public Library and in several elementary schools in Burlington.She was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church where she sang in the church choir and participated in the women’s society. She belonged to United Methodist Women and served as a district officer. She served two missions in Nicaragua. She lived her faith, which was a generous and broad-minded Christianity.After raising her children, she traveled to Germany, Egypt, Israel, and Ecuador.She is survived by her children: Peter (Marilyn) French of Council Bluffs, Iowa; John (Lucy) French of Irving, Texas; Paul (Suzanne) French of Burlington; Ruth French of Council Bluffs, Iowa; Mark French of Burlington; David (Lexie) French of Washington, Iowa; and Mary (Jeff) Rand of St. Louis, Missouri; and grandchildren and great-grandchildren.She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her son Jim French, and three brothers, John Ziglar, Richard Ziglar and Paul Ziglar.A memorial has been established for the United Methodist Global Ministries project to provide fresh water for Central Congo.The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, October 12 at Lunning Chapel. Pastor Nancy Sutherland will officiate. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 11 at Lunning Chapel where the family will receive friends.

Dorothy Ziglar French

Elizabeth “Betty” Ann Boughton, 82, of Mount Pleasant, died Thursday, Oct. 3, 2024, at the Henry County Health Center in Mount Pleasant.

Born March 11, 1942 in St. Paul, Iowa, she was the daughter of Alfred “Butch” and Mary Ellen Mueller. She married John Harris Boughton Jr. on June 26, 1970 in West Burlington. They were married for 54 years until his death on June 29, 2024.

Betty began her work career as an X-Ray Technician for Dr. Rashid. She met the love of her life John Boughton Jr. working for Georgia Pacific and eventually became the BEST babysitter and educator in the Burlington area, operating an in-home daycare for years in addition to being a full-time wife, mom and homemaker.

She was an avid baker and made the best cheesy potatoes, wedding/graduation mints and lemon bars. She loved watching and shopping the QVC network, but most important to her was her family and she firmly believed the “sun rose and set” in her grandchildren.

She is survived by her children; Charlotte (Charles) Manganiello of Sunrise, Florida, Shawn (Bridgette) Boughton of Danville, Iowa and Jennifer (Robert) Jern of West Burlington; three grandchildren, Parker, Harris and Cate; two brothers, Darrel (Dana) Mueller of Fort Madison and Michael Mueller of North Liberty, Iowa and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, three brothers, Donnie Mueller, David Mueller and Frank Mueller and two sisters, Barb Brockett and Kathy Medland.

The memorial funeral service for Betty will be 2 p.m. Friday, October 11 at Lunning Chapel. Pastor JudyAnn Morse will officiate. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.

According to her wishes, cremation has been entrusted to the care of Lunning Chapel.

Cynthia Kathleen Merschbrock, 69, of Rochester, Minn., died Thursday, Sept. 26, 2024, at the Cottage Wood Senior Communities. Cynthia was born in&nbsp;Keosauqua, on March 25, 1955, to Elroy and Dorothy Reese. She graduated from&nbsp;Ames High School&nbsp;and continued her education at Central Institute for the Deaf in St. Louis, Mo. Cynthia married Ronald Joseph Merschbrock&nbsp;in Ames, on&nbsp;March 4, 1978.

Cynthia worked as a data entry clerk for Saint Marys Hospital in Rochester, Minn. for&nbsp;many years.&nbsp; She enjoyed working on her many cross-stitch projects and spending time with her three sons and five grandkids.&nbsp; She was also actively involved in the deaf community.&nbsp;&nbsp; Her survivors include her brother Mike, her three sons, Brad (wife Amy), Michael (wife RaeLyn), Matthew (wife Annie), and five grandchildren; Ambrose, Deacon, Lucy, Zoe, Mason, and three nephews Jeff, Chris and Jason.&nbsp;&nbsp; Cynthia is preceded in death by her parents, late husband, and sister-in-law. A visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 12, 2024, at Schmitz Funeral Home in West Point. Denis Casey, 64, of Oquawka, Ill. died Thursday, Oct. 3, 2024, at the OSF Richard Owens Hospice Home in Peoria. Born Sept. 24, 1960, in Aurora, Ill., he was the son of Buddy Allen and Carol J Davis Casey. On Jan. 21, 1978, he married Eveline Braddy in Batavia, Ill.&nbsp; Denis had worked in construction since he was 18 years old. Denis loved watching NASCAR. He will be fondly remembered for his great sense of sarcasm and always giving his family and friends a hard time. Survivors include his wife, Eveline Casey of Oquawka, Ill.; two sons, Denis Casey, Jr. of Kirkwood, Ill. and Kenny (Gaby) Casey of Hampshire, Ill.; two daughters, Shelby (Charlie) Czajkowski of Gladstone, Ill. and Heaven (Malachi Fischer-Porter) Casey of Peoria, Ill.; five grandchildren, Denis Casey III, Laine Gholson, Sebastian Martinez, Katalina Casey and Raelyn Czajkowski; and his mother, Carol J Casey of Oquawka, Ill. He was preceded in death by his father. Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh Crematory. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Gavin Wayne Browning, 16, of New London, died Friday, Sept. 27, 2024, in New London. He was born March 22, 2008, in West Burlington to Ashley Kathleen Kieler and William Wayne Browning. He was a junior at New London High School and following graduation he had planned to become an apprentice in a welding program in Missouri.

Gavin was very independent; loved fishing, especially at Oakland Mills Dam; being with his friends; and adored his three brothers and his “Popi”. He was thriving at his first real job at the Jet Stop in New London.

He is survived by his parents Ashley and Ryan Peiffer of New London, and William Browning; three brothers Bryce Peiffer, Ayden Browning and Chayse Peiffer of New London; half-brothers Liam Browning and Jacob White; half-sister Indie Browning; grandparents Nicholas and Theresa Kieler of West Burlington, Steve Peiffer of Mt. Pleasant, and Bill and Norma Browning of Dayton, Ohio; aunts and uncles Adam Kieler of Burlington, Katie and Adam Duncan of Antioch, Ill., Connie and D.J. King of Sault St. Marie, Michigan, Lisa Browning of Ohio; cousins Jake, McKenzie, Wyatt, Moira and Logan; and many, many good friends.

A celebration of Gavin’s life will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, Oct. 4, 2024, at the New London Christian Church with Pastor Nathan Cooper officiating. Randall Bruce “Randy” White,&nbsp;71, of Wever, died Thursday, Sept. 26, 2024, after a long battle of lung cancer.&nbsp; He was born on Jan. 9, 1953, in Fort Madison, to the late Jesse “JB” and Marjorie “Colleen” White.

Randy was a Marine and served in many ports but the one he had the fondest memories in was from 1974-1977 when he was in Hawaii.&nbsp;&nbsp;

In his younger years, Randy loved the Rodeo. He received many trophies and belt buckles over the years and even qualified for the Finals at Fargo North Dakota.&nbsp;&nbsp;

He leaves his daughter: Heather Dykes and her three sons: Phillip King, Colton King and Jordan Sherman; two brothers: Richard and Russell White; niece: Elizabeth Stapp and her daughters: Samantha and Ashley as well as a great great niece: Remington; nephew: Richard Jr. and his children: Pace and Nora. He was preceded in death by his parents.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Randy was a United States Marine Corp. veteran. He spent his final years spending most of his time with his lifelong friends, the Harris family.&nbsp;His laugh was infectious says a member of that family.&nbsp;He loved Christmas, working on old hot rods and fishing on the Skunk River.&nbsp;

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 4, 2024, at Keokuk National Cemetery with full military rites presented by the Keokuk American Legion, Post #0041.

A memorial has been established in his memory.

Randall Bruce “Randy” White

Donald Downer, 88, of Sperry, died Monday, September 30, 2024, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in West Burlington surround by his family. Born July 31, 1936 in Burlington, he was the son of Maxwell D. and Geneva Mester Downer.

He was a 1954 graduate of Sperry High School and served in the National Guard.

He married Mary June Housman on May 20, 1956 at Salem Lutheran Church in Salem, Iowa. She preceded him in death on June 18, 2024.

Don worked in construction after high school, The Foundary, as a mechanic for John Deere and an engine machinist and service mechanic for an outboard marine local dealership shop.

He was a very accomplished woodworker and enjoyed fishing and camping.

He is survived by his three children; Kevin (Suzanne) Downer of Burlington, Doug (Susan) Downer of Florida and Melody (Duane) Berenger; six grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren; and two great great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, parents and one brother Maxwell D. Downer Jr.

A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 4, 2024, in Burlington Memorial Park with Pastor James Zuehls officiating.

Donald Downer

Mary Anne Koontz, 75, of Salem, Iowa, died Monday, Sept. 30, 2024, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.

Born Sept. 18, 1949, in Mount Pleasant, she was the daughter of Harold and Ilse Gardner Christner.

She was the longtime Assistant Manager at Dave’s Super Value until her retirement in November of 2002.

Mary loved spending time with family and friends and game nights. She particularly loved playing jokes and pranks (aka Matilda Koontz) on family with her accomplices (cousins). She enjoyed doing many things, motorcycle riding, dancing, and music and spending time with her grandkids and great grandkids.

Our sincerest thank you to Cindy &amp; Bob Moser (parents). Without the precious gift (organ donor) from your loved one Lisa Moser, that she so thoughtfully gave, we would not have been able to have the extra 13 years with Mom. She got to meet all 9 of her great grandbabies and be at many other family and friend events. I don’t know if our gratitude can ever be truly expressed and the importance of organ donation and the gift you gave our family.

She will be solely missed by her two children; Tammy (Roger) Hobbs of Morning Sun, Iowa and Tommy (Gricelda) Koontz of New Castle, Oklahoma, eight grandchildren, Cody Duncan, Amber Hobbs, Tara Hobbs, Drake Koontz, Samanta Koontz, Carlos Orellana, John Orellana and Ariel Orellana; ten great grandchildren, Haydin Duncan, Saylor Fleming, Maverick Fleming, Emma Holgers, Owen Holgers, Rowan Holgers, Adelaide Koontz, Vance Andermann, Josie Andermann, Arizona Orellana and Foxe Orellana and her companion Jeff Mills of Salem, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by his parents and one sister.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, Oct. 3 at Lunning Chapel from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The graveside funeral service and interment will be held 11 a.m. Friday, October 4 at Aspen Grove Cemetery, 2043 Sunnyside, Burlington.

Mary Anne Koontz

Jean E. Schnupper, 92, of West Burlington, died Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2024, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born Jan. 24, 1932, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Horace W. and Florence E. Hillgartner Dodds. On April 20, 1952, she married Donald Dee Schnupper at the Danville United Methodist Church in Danville.&nbsp;

She was a 1950 graduate of Danville High School.&nbsp;

Jean was an office clerk for the Des Moines County Assessor's Office for 30 years.

She was a member of Danville United Methodist Church. Jean volunteered at the hospital for many years. She enjoyed reading, NASCAR racing, and watching college basketball. She had a soft spot for animals, especially her dogs. But most of all, Jean enjoyed spending time with her family.

Survivors include her husband, Don; two daughters, Lynn Sloan of West Burlington, and Kim (Randy) Foor of Morning Sun; four grandchildren, Brianne (Courtney) Duncan, Zach Newman, Jazzla Jean (Ross) Birkenstock, and Gabe (Megan) Newman; five great-grandchildren, Dylan Jean, Gabe Jr., Bo, Bobbi Sue, and Gracie; sister-in-law, Iona Beckman; three special nieces, Laurie Caggiano, Sherry Kaestner, and Luana Lambert and bonus daughter, Jane Kuepper.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Robert and William Dodds, and one sister, Janet Lee Dodds.

Burial will be at Jaggar Cemetery in Danville at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established for St. Jude Children's Hospital and PAW Animal Shelter in Fort Madison.

The family wishes to express the gratitude to the nurses and staff on the ICU for their care and compassion during this difficult time.

Jean Schnupper

Bambi Lee Orth, 70, of Burlington, passed peacefully, Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2024, at her home.

Born May 4, 1954, in Davenport, she was the daughter of Bernard H.F. and Haldis Bredesen Wagener. On June 21, 1975, she married Timothy Jo Orth at Faith Lutheran Church in Burlington.&nbsp;

She was a 1972 graduate of Burlington High School and then attended Southeastern Community College where she obtained her certified secretary certificate.

Bambi worked as a secretary for Benner Tea and later for H &amp; R Block for 40 years. She also worked as a paraeducator for Burlington Community School District, working at Prospect, Corse, BHS and Sunnyside until her retirement in 2018.&nbsp;

She was a charter member of Faith Lutheran Church where she helped in many ways over the years. Bambi was the former president of the Burlington Police Auxiliary and helped organize the family portrait fundraiser. She had many interests, including watching Hallmark movies, reading romance novels, writing, creating and painting ceramics, sewing, making clothes, and coloring. Bambi had a love for music and played the violin in the orchestra. Bambi enjoyed her gardens, growing beautiful flowers, as well as tomatoes and peppers for homemade salsa. She enjoyed playing Bunco with her friends, going shopping, and considered herself a sommelier. Bambi liked to travel, either with her sister to far off places or on trips with her family. Above all else, she loved her family and spending time with them.&nbsp;

She will be remembered for having their home decorated for every holiday and being a kind, compassionate woman who always wore a smile.&nbsp;

Survivors include her husband, Timothy Orth; three daughters, Nicole (Kyle) Dobson, Laura Orth, and Courtney (Brent) Miller; three grandchildren, Isabella, &nbsp;Lana, and Owen; two siblings, Bernal (Ronald) Koch, and Dale (Marina) Wagener; nephew and niece, Christopher Koch, and Katherine Summers and their families.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Douglas (Gloria) and three grandchildren Madi, Luca and Maddex.

Visitation will be from noon until 7 p.m. with the family to receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, October 4, 2024, at Prugh Funeral Service, 3940 Division Street.
