John Kruft, 65, of Burlington, died Monday, Sept. 1, 2025, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in West Burlington. Born February 27, 1960, in Evanston, Ill., he was the son of Raymond and Ione Sturgeon Cowart.&nbsp; John worked as a security guard for a few different companies, including a nuclear power plant in Illinois. Most recently, he worked as an operations manager for Dollar Tree.&nbsp; John was a member of the Society for Creative Anachronism. He was passionate about reenacting events and even made some of his own armor to wear. He enjoyed playing pool and darts and was always happy to take on a worthy opponent in a game of chess. Survivors include his sister, Anne (Michael) Hill of Burlington; one brother, Richard Allen of Pleasant Prairie, Wis.; two nieces, Katherine (Michael) Flint and Victoria Davidson; three great nephews and one great niece. He was preceded in death by his mother, Ione Sturgeon Cowart and step-father, Raymond Cowart. Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh Crematory. There will be no visitation or services. As he grew older, his talent transitioned to working on automobiles. He enjoyed fishing and spending time with his family and close friends. He loved to travel. Erma Jean Isom, 84, of Burlington, &nbsp;was called home to be with the Lord on Monday, August 25, 2025, surrounded by the love and prayers of her family in the comfort of her home.

Born April 3, 1941, in Wynne, Arkansas, she was the daughter of Columbus and Dovie Moon Williams.

She attended Wynne High School in Arkansas.

She was a devoted and nurturing mother, and loving grandmother whose life was a testament to God’s grace. Her home was always a place of warmth and welcome, where love was freely given and faith was deeply rooted.

A woman of unshakable faith, Erma not only worshiped as a dedicated member of Whole Truth Gospel Church but also served faithfully as its pastor. Erma loved fishing, shopping at Hopefully Yours and, her favorite, Goodwill. She loved to be around the Saints of God and family. Jesus was her husband and she loved talking with her man.&nbsp;

Survivors include five children, Ossie Willfrom of Cleveland, OH, Kelvin Willform of Burlington, Jermain Willform of Cedar Rapids, Dovie Purnell of Burlington, and Octavia Rees of Burlington; 34 grandchildren; 62 great-grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one brother, Jerry (Jackie) Williams of Burlington, one sister, Mae Frances McQuay of Calumet City, IL, and a host of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, LeVern Brown, two grandsons, Octavius Willform and Ichabod Purnell, one granddaughter, Semaja Willfrom and several other family members.

Visitation will be from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM, Thursday, September 4, 2025 at Bethany Lutheran Church.

Mary Ann Carlson, 71, of West Burlington died Thursday, August 28, 2025, at the Klein Center of West Burlington. She was born on March 19, 1954 in Burlington, the daughter of William and Mabel Hanson Yates.

Mary graduated from West Burlington Arnold High School in 1972 and on May 26, 1973 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in West Burlington she married Randall Allen Carlson.

Mary was a member of Harmony Bible Church in Danville. She was a Homemaker and loved being a mom, walking, exercising, and playing the Piano.

Survivors include her husband of 52 years Randall Allen Carlson of West Burlington, one son Jeremy Carlson and daughter-in-law, Zabrina Carlson Tipton of Centerville, Ohio; one son-in-law, Lonnie Nichols of Ashburn, Virginia; Three grandchildren, Ian Alexander Nichols of Arlington, Virginia, Kyrsten Heather Carlson of Pensacola, Florida, and Christa Anna Tipton-Nigro of Centerville, Ohio; brother-in-law, sister-in-law, many nieces and nephews.

.She was preceded in death by her Parents, daughter Heather Dawn Nichols, one brother Richard Korschgen, and one sister Barb Stellern.

The funeral service for Mary Ann Carlson will be 12 noon on Saturday, September 6, 2025 in the Lunning Chapel with Pastor Nate Todd officiating. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.

Harmon “Vern” Cook Jr., 76, of West Melbourne, Florida, died Thursday, August 28, 2025, unexpectedly in Burlington, Iowa.

Born on February 16, 1949, in Bluefield, West Virginia, he was the son of Harmon and Sallie (Haymes) Cook Sr. He married Kay King and later divorced. On June 30, 2001, in Burlington, Iowa he married “the woman of his dreams” Pamela Cutright.

Vern was a 1967 graduate of Pocahontas High School in Pocahontas, Virginia. After high school he worked for Norfolk Southern Railway until he decided to join the United States Air Force. After his service in the United States Air Force, he worked again at Norfolk Southern Railway and then obtained a bachelor’s degree from Toledo Ohio University. Vern also obtained a license in private investigation. For forty-two years he worked as a private investigator until his retirement in 2014. He was a board member of Associated Detectives and Security Agencies of Illinois, and was president from 2008-2009. He was also appointed by the governor to serve as a member of the review board for violations of Licensed Detectives. He was of Baptist faith and was a lifelong member of the V.F.W.

In Vern’s free time he enjoyed going fishing and golfing. He loved to cook, especially grilling on the BBQ. He was an avid Kansas City Chiefs fan and loved watching basketball, specifically college March Madness. Vern loved living a good life in Florida but he loved nothing more than being with his friends and family, whom brought him the most joy.

He is survived by his wife Pam of West Melbourne, Florida; two daughters: Lisa (Darren) Crowder of Bolivar, Missouri and Jennifer (John) Pender of Burlington, Iowa; three granddaughters: Samantha Pender of Burlington, Iowa, Lily and Lauren Crowder of Bolivar, Missouri and sister Shirley Edwards of Starke, Florida. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son Scott Cook; sister Bobbie Jean Billings and step son Robert McKee.

Per his wishes cremation has been entrusted and accorded to the care of Lunning Chapel. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

Doris Helen Johnson, 78, of Burlington, died Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2025, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born March 20, 1947, in Fort Madison, she was the daughter of Austin Calvin Myers and Mildred Elizabeth Strunk. She was raised in Wapello by her mother and stepfather, Jerry L. Pogemiller. On Sept. 22, 2003, she married Dale "Ed" Johnson in Las Vegas.&nbsp;

She was a 1965 graduate of Wapello High School. She later attended University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg.&nbsp;

Dori worked for the Iowa Department of Human Services in various locations across the state until her retirement.&nbsp;

She enjoyed traveling, antiquing/treasure hunting and baking her favorite deserts. Dori had a green thumb, and took great joy in gardening, growing and arranging flowers and worked seasonally for Ace Florist during the holidays. A devoted friend and family member, Dori cherished time spent with loved ones and always made an effort to stay in contact, whether in person or over the phone.&nbsp;

Survivors include her husband, Ed Johnson of Burlington; two children, Samantha (Cliff) Freeman of Dallas, Texas, and Jon (Tara) Perrin of Muscatine; four grandchildren, Alex Freeman, Jace Bierman, Riley Perrin, and Wyatt Perrin; one sister, Lori (John) Yotter of Decatur, Ill.; several nieces and nephews; three aunts, Jeanette Brasfield, Bernice Budke, and Ruthie Haley; additional family members, Shane (Megan) Johnson of Pekin, and Kendra (Jamie) McCabe of Biggsville, Ill. and several extended family members.&nbsp;

She was preceded in death by her father, mother, step father and sister, Mary Jean Stokes.

John Taylor Hull, Jr., 79, of Burlington, passed away peacefully on Aug. 26, 2025, at Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born on March 10, 1946, to John Taylor Hull, Sr. and Bertha Birkenstock Hull. John attended Burlington Community High School and later proudly served his country in the Iowa National Guard from Jan. 1, 1964, through Dec. 31, 1970.

On Sept. 23, 1969, John married the love of his life, Sandra Jones Hull. Together, they built a life filled with love, family, and cherished memories over their 55 years of marriage.

John worked as a dedicated U.S. postal carrier for 33 years, retiring on April 1, 2002. In his youth, his interest was driving the latest muscle car. Throughout his life, he found joy in collecting sports memorabilia. Most of all, he treasured time spent with his family, who were the center of his world.

Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Sandra; his sons, John Taylor Hull III and Mark Allen Hull; his stepdaughter, Lisa Ann Granados (David); his grandchildren, Anna Dorsey (Josh) and Zachary Hull (Michaela); along with several step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John Sr. and Bertha Hull.

Per his wishes cremation has been entrusted and accorded to the care of Lunning Chapel.

A private burial will take place with Pastor Ron Jewett officiating. A celebration of John’s life will be held at a later date.

James L. Miller, 91, of Sperry, died Monday, August 25, 2025, at Bickford Cottages in Burlington. Born on Dec. 10, 1933, in Sperry, he was the son of John A. and Mildred P. Keener Miller. On July 15, 1954, in Kahoka, Mo., he married Marilyn E. Gieselman. She preceded him in death on Nov. 18, 2022.

Jim was a 1952 graduate of Sperry High School. On June 4, 1953, he enlisted in the United States Army. Jim farmed his entire life. In his free time enjoyed wood working, gardening with his late wife Marilyn, going on tractor drives and being with his family. Jim spent a lot of time at Old Stone Cemetery fixing monuments and helping with the grounds. He loved nothing more than farming and being in his shop.

He is survived by two children: Robert (Traci) Miller of Winfield, Iowa, and Penny (Rick) Dopler of Sperry, Iowa; four grandchildren: Taren (Trent) Samuels, Kiley (Jacob) Leichty, Shayla (Josh) Schilling and Landon Dopler; twelve great grandchildren: Tayson, Treyor, Taelyn and Ty Samuels, Liam, Sutton, Vail and Indie Leichty, Addison and Breckyn Schilling, Hayden and Greyson Dopler and one brother Jerry (Jane) Miller. Also surviving are several nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Marilyn, son Dennis, sister Arline and sister in-law Gloria.

The funeral service for Jim will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 30, 2025, at Lunning Chapel with Tom Sands officiating. A one-hour visitation will be held prior to the service at 10 a.m. where the family will meet with friends. Interment will be held in Old Stone Cemetery.

A memorial has been established in his memory for Old Stone Cemetery or Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center Hospice.

Nick Brown, 46, of Burlington, died Friday, Aug. 22, 2025, at his home. Born Sept. 1, 1978, in Burlington, he was the son of Tim Edward and Gayle Allene Oldham Brown.&nbsp; Following his graduation from high school, Nick earned his Associates Degree from SCC. Nick worked as a machinist for a variety of different companies during his career. He thoroughly enjoyed his profession and was very passionate about it. Nick enjoyed target shooting, riding 4-wheelers and tinkering on his vehicles. He always seemed to be working on something. Nick’s greatest joy and proudest accomplishment in life were his three children, who were the center of his world. He cherished every moment with them-whether it was sharing laughter, offering guidance, or simply hanging out. He loved them with a depth that could be felt in everything he did. Survivors include two daughters, Morgan Brown of Taylor Ridge, and Gracy Brown of Marion; son, Michael Brown of Burlington, siblings, Lisa (Rob) Perrenoud of Mount Pleasant, twin brother, Mike (Carrie) Brown of Danville, Tim (Shawna) Brown of Burlington, Terry (Lisa) Saldeen, Bill (Sally) Saldeen, Bob Saldeen and many nieces and nephews. Nick Brown

Carl Leslie Turner, 70, of Danville, died Saturday, Aug. 23, 2025, at his home. Born July 11, 1955, in Mount Pleasant, he was the son of &nbsp;Leonard Frank and Kathryn Adele Hemmings Turner.&nbsp;

Carl graduated from Danville High School in 1974. He later attended trade school, Colorado Community College for gunsmithing in 1976. &nbsp;

He was a U.S. Army Veteran, serving during Operation Desert Storm.&nbsp;

Prior to his service he worked as a mechanist at Heatilator. Once Carl returned to Southeast Iowa, he worked for Innovaire until his retirement.&nbsp;

He was a former member of Long Creek Methodist Church. Carl enjoyed fishing and growing hot peppers. He had a soft spot for cats, and took in many strays over the years.&nbsp;

Survivors include his siblings, Nancy (Dale) Knezevich of Duluth, MN, Dale Turner of Danville, Patrick Turner of Mt Pleasant, and Paul Turner of Las Vegas, NV; eight nieces and nephews; and numerous great nieces, great nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one niece.&nbsp;

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh Crematory.

Burial will be held at Long Creek Cemetery outside of Danville at a later date.

Carl Leslie Turner

Marston “Marty” Wilmeth, 88, passed away on Thursday,&nbsp;August 14, 2025, in Arlington, Texas. Celebration Of Life will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, August 19, 2025, at Trinity United&nbsp; Methodist Church, 1200 W. Green Oaks Blvd, Arlington, TX 76013. Memorials: In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Trinity United&nbsp; Methodist Church or the Genesis Sunday School Class. Marty was born on February 3, 1937, the last born of the first set of&nbsp; triplets in Henry County, Iowa to Chauncey and Marie Wilmeth. He grew up&nbsp; in Henry County and attended Salem High School, where he met the love of&nbsp; his life, Louann Clark. The two were married on February 6, 1955,&nbsp; beginning a partnership of 70 years filled with love, laughter, and&nbsp; devotion. Marty and his family later relocated to West Burlington, Iowa, where he&nbsp; held numerous jobs, including his role at Service Master, where he&nbsp; became Director of Environmental Services. In this position, he served&nbsp; hospitals across Iowa and Illinois before moving to Texas in 1977. He&nbsp; worked at St. Paul Hospital in Dallas, where he received an Achievement&nbsp; in Excellence Award, helped launch Children’s Hospital in Houston and&nbsp; retired from Arlington Memorial Hospital in 2001. Outside of work, Marty had a deep passion for sports. He was an avid&nbsp; bowler, inducted into the Burlington Bowling Hall of Fame in 1976, and&nbsp; competed in tournaments across several states. He also loved golf,&nbsp; proudly scoring a hole-in-one at Squaw Creek Golf Course. Though he&nbsp; played in many locations, he always said that golfing in Fairbanks,&nbsp; Alaska, was his favorite. Louann eventually took up golf at age 70,&nbsp; joking, “It was the only way I would ever see him.” Marty was also a&nbsp; lifelong and devoted Green Bay Packers fan, cheering on his team through&nbsp; every season. Marty was a longtime member of Trinity United Methodist Church, where he&nbsp;served as an usher for 30 years and was active in the Genesis Sunday&nbsp; School Class. He will be remembered for his dedication to his family,&nbsp; his warm and welcoming nature, and his joyful spirit that touched&nbsp; everyone he met. He was preceded in death by his parents, Marie and Chauncey Wilmeth; and&nbsp; his triplet sisters, Marilyn Ladely and Marlene Reid. On May 17, 2003, she married William "Bill" Alter in Burlington.&nbsp; She graduated from Cedar Rapids Kennedy in 1971, where she channeled her love of swimming by competing in the school’s swim team. Deborah held various jobs throughout her career, including positions at Springhouse in Cedar Rapids, La Mont, Antennacraft, and most recently as a CNA at Prairie Ridge in Mediapolis. She had recently started attending First Baptist Church in Mediapolis. Deborah enjoyed camping, fishing, and crocheting doilies and washcloths. Deborah liked to cheer on the Iowa Hawkeyes, and her favorite holiday was Christmas. Above all, her greatest joy came from spending time with her family, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Survivors include her husband, Bill Alter of Burlington; two daughters, Wendy Sims and Kelly (Gilbert) Noble both of Burlington; four grandchildren, Justin, Jeremy, Makinze, and Joseph; eight great-grandchildren; sister, Pam (David) Mehring of Cedar Rapids; and brother, Steven Dodge of Wyoming, IA. Deborah Alter

James Edward Carpenter, 68, of West Point, Iowa, passed away 7:36 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 21, 2025, unexpectedly due to cancer complications at the Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in West Burlington.

He was born on Dec. 8, 1956, in Washington, Iowa, the son of Edward D. and Louise Kaufman Carpenter.&nbsp;

Survivors include his mother: Louise Pieper of Fort Madison; daughter: Doris Kempker of Donnellson; son: Wade Carpenter of Olds and sister: Kelly (Carl) Bergman of West Point. Also surviving are several aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his father: Edward; step-father: Harry Pieper and nephew: Eric Bergman.

Jim attended Fort Madison High School until the age of seventeen when he enlisted in the United States Army. He enjoyed being outdoors, hunting, fishing, mushroom hunting, music and riding his motorcycle. Jim especially enjoyed spending time with his mother.

His body has been entrusted to the crematory of Schmitz Funeral Home for cremation.

A private family graveside service with full military rites will be held at Oakland Cemetery in Fort Madison.

James Edward Carpenter

Rosalinda Chiprez "Rosie" Perez, 70, of West Burlington, died Friday, Aug. 22, 2025, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in West Burlington. Born Jan. 3, 1955, in Uvalde, Texas, she was the daughter of Jesus Arturo and Margarita Alvarez Chiprez.

Rosie was an incredibly patient, thoughtful and kind woman. &nbsp;A long time member of St. John Catholic Church, her faith was very important to her. &nbsp;She had a deep love for her family and loved being a grandmother. &nbsp;Rosie enjoyed shopping, both for herself and finding gifts for her children and grandchildren. &nbsp;She always looked forward to babysitting her grandkids and making sure that everyone in the house was well fed - she was known for her cheesy potatoes. &nbsp;Rosie made sure that she was always in attendance of her grandkids sporting events and activities and was their biggest cheerleader. &nbsp;Her kindness and warm hearted nature will be missed tremendously, but her memory will continue on through all who loved her.

Rosie's family include her husband of 46 years, Socorro; children, Angelica Perez-Hall and Marcos (Annie) Perez; grandchildren, Isaiah Perez-Hall, Julian Perez-Hall, Adrian Perez-Hall, Luna Perez-Hall, Penelope Perez, and Hazel Perez; and brothers, Enrique "Chip" (Junellen) Chiprez and Art (Sue) Chiprez.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Jennifer Perez; and her parents, Jesus and Margarita.

A celebration of life visitation for Rosie will be held on Sunday, Aug. 31 from 1 to 3 p.m. at Prugh Funeral Service (3940 Division Street, Burlington).

Memorials in Rosie's memory are suggested to the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

Linda Kay Cale, 73, of Burlington, died Tuesday, August 19, 2025, at her home. Born Oct. 19, 1951, she was the daughter of Richard and Mary Snowden.

She was a 1969 graduate of Burlington Notre Dame High School.

She married Robert Cale on Jan. 6, 1989, in Minneapolis, Minn. He preceded her in death on April 4, 2005.

Linda was the Owner and Operator of Old Stone Mill Antiques for several years. She previously worked for the Johnson County Environmental Department in Kansas and AmEx where she met her husband.

She was a member of the Downtown Partners (a division of the Greater Burlington Partnership) and loved listening to music. She was very devoted to her mother and her care.

She is survived by her mother, Mary Snowden; three children Kathryn Cale of Keokuk, Michele Cale (Jeff) Bullins of Kansas and Michael (Denise) Cale of Illinois; 10 grandchildren; two great grandchildren and several cousins.

She was preceded in death by her father, husband Robert and son Marcus Cale.

According to her wishes a private family graveside service and committal will be held at Aspen Grove Cemetery.

A Celebration of Life is scheduled for Sunday, October 19th from 4 to 6 p.m.&nbsp; at Wake N Bake located in downtown Burlington.

Anthony Kastantin, 57, of Burlington, died Tuesday, July 8, 2025, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in West Burlington. He was born March 16, 1968, in Ottumwa.

Tony was a gentle soul with a great love of family, food, and music.&nbsp; His passion was food and he cultivated that passion throughout his life working as a Chef for over 34 years.&nbsp; He enjoyed music, wrote poetry, and played the guitar often.&nbsp; He liked having deep conversations to understand people and the world on a more spiritual level.&nbsp; Tony had a great sense of humor and enjoyed making others laugh.&nbsp; He looked forward to watching the Hawkeyes play throughout their seasons.&nbsp; More than anything, Tony loved his family and was a wonderful father.&nbsp; He liked being a family man and took pride in his role as a father, husband, son, and brother.&nbsp; Tony's loving and honest personality and his bright blue eyes will be missed deeply; but his memory and legacy will be carried by all who love him.

Survivors include his beloved wife of 25 years, Edith Kastantin; children, Brad Kastantin and Stephen Kastantin; mother, Jane&nbsp;Mondanaro Munn; siblings, Lani (Kevin) McDonald, Jason (Andrea) Munn, Andrew (Sara) Kastantin; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Rebecca Anne McCullough, 79, died Monday, Aug. 18, 2025, at her home in Burlington. Born Dec. 30, 1945, in Oskaloosa, she was the daughter of Alvin and Margaret McCaulley Adolphs.&nbsp; On Aug. 9, 1969, she married Michael McCullough in Oskaloosa.&nbsp;

Rebecca devoted her life to music.&nbsp; She obtained her bachelor’s degree in music from Drake University in 1968.&nbsp; She then worked as the orchestra director with the Burlington School District for over 30 years before retiring.&nbsp; During that time, she also worked as the choir director of the First Congregational Church in Burlington.

Music and family were Rebecca’s two loves in her life.&nbsp; She appreciated the profound beauty of music and used her skills to share her love with future generations.&nbsp; Her artistry also extended to homemade greeting cards, which she enjoyed making and giving out to those special people in her life.&nbsp; She enjoyed traveling and visiting family in other states or even going to important genealogical sights to learn more of her family’s history and heritage.&nbsp; She loved her family dearly and loved the time she spent with them.&nbsp;

Rebecca is survived by her husband Michael McCullough of Burlington; her daughter Heather (Troy) Smith of Burlington; grandchildren, Taylor and Shania Smith; great-grandchildren, Bentley and Mateo Smith; and sister, C. Jeanne (David) Patterson of Dubuque. She is also survived by many cousins and nieces, and nephews.

Sadly, she was preceded in death by her son Nathan Wade McCullough; siblings Constance Van Loon and Arlo W. Adolphs; and her parents Alvin and Margaret.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh Crematory. Visitation will be from 1:00 pm until 3:00 pm, Friday, Sept. 12, 2025, at First Congregational Church (313 N 4th St., Burlington).

Marjorie Louise "Marge" Classen, 84, of Burlington, died Friday, Aug. 15, 2025, at her residence at Addington Place.

Born Feb. 23, 1941, in Aledo, Ill., she was the daughter of Ronald E. and Louise M. Seiver. She was a 1959 graduate of Winona High School in Viola, Ill,&nbsp; and a 1962 graduate of Iowa Wesleyan, earning her Bachelor’s Degree.

She married Alvin A. Classen on June 18, 1966, in West Liberty, Iowa. He preceded her in death on Dec. 13, 2012.

Marge was a Science teacher for Burlington Notre Dame Catholic Schools for 18 years until her retirement in 2001.

She was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church where she served as a council member, Sunday school teacher, and with Parish Life Communication. She earned the 1975 Outstanding Young Woman in Trenton, Mo., the District Award of Merit from the Boy Scouts of America, and served as the PTA President for Washington School. In 1985, she was selected for the NASA workshop at Huntsville, Ala. Marge was a water instructor at the YMCA for many years. She was a past director for the Burlington Women’s Bowling Association and earned the Secretary of the Year twice and the Merit Award. She was a member of the Burlington Bowling Hall of Fame and involved in the local chapters of Al-Anon and Alloteen.

She is survived by her daughter, Mary (Phil) Bisenius; two sons, Douglas (Lisa) Classen and Nathan (Dyneah) Classen; grandchildren, Travis Bisenius, Bryce Bisenius, Elsa Classen, Freya Classen, Willa Classen, Noah Classen; step- granddaughter Amanda Beeding; sister, Pauline (Fred) Lundeed; sisters-in-law, Mary Classen, Marjorie Seiver, Carolyn (John) Yeater, Viola (Chuck) Kemmerer; brother-in-law Charles (Carolyn) Gertz; special friends Lori Easterla, Angela Wolf, Mike and Diane Rouse and their children Devin and Sara and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was born on October 19, 1995, in Burlington, the son of James and Amy McDavid Spears.

He is survived by his daughter: Chenoa Spears; mother and step-father: Amy (Jeff) Krebill; father: James “Jimmy” Spears; brothers: Jacob (Addison) Spears, Elijah Spears, Joseph Krebill; grandmother: Vicki McDavid; grandparents: Mark and Ellen Meek. Also surviving are several aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather; Robert; paternal grandparents;&nbsp; Daniel, Sr. &amp; Nora Spears; two uncles and one aunt.

Thomas was an iron worker, concrete laborer and landscaper. He had a big heart and did not know a stranger. He loved his daughter fiercely. She was his world! Thomas loved ice cream dates with Chenoa, hunting, fishing, trapshooting with his brothers, enjoying adventures in nature and a good Sunday on the river. Most of all, he enjoyed time with family and friends. He was a master negotiator with anyone he met and a hard worker - full speed at everything.

Thomas  Andrew Spears

James Michael Livengood, age 84, a man of great integrity and kindness, passed peacefully while holding his wife's hand on August 12, 2025. Jim was lucky to live a full and wonderful life with his best friend, Mary June (McDonough) Livengood, whom he married in 1963.

Jim grew up in Burlington, Iowa, where his gift for conversation meant he never met a stranger. His word was his bond, and to those who knew him, a handshake from Jim was as solid as a signed contract. He was a master storyteller—whether in print, on the airwaves, or in telling long, laughter-filled jokes.

Jim was a proud graduate of Burlington High School (1959) and Iowa State University (1963), where he earned a degree in technical journalism and enjoyed camaraderie as a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity.

His career in communications began in 1958 at KBUR radio in Burlington. He recalled in a 1987 Hawk Eye interview, “I was hired Nov. 29, 1958, and was paid $1 per hour… It was the best thing that could’ve ever happened to me.”

Jim worked for The Hawk Eye newspaper in the summer of 1961. Following college graduation he worked for the Columbia Basin Herald in Moses Lake, Washington. In 1964, he returned to KBUR as an advertising representative, later becoming advertising manager in 1978 and, in 1987, general manager of KBUR and its sister station KGRS-FM. In 1988, Jim and his wife Mary, along with a partner, purchased the radio stations, returning them to local ownership for the first time since 1961. Jim and Mary retired after selling the stations in 1996 and were lucky to share nearly 30 additional years together with family, friends and exploring the world.

Among Jim’s many civic and volunteer endeavors were: Burlington Area Chamber of Commerce, Burlington Area Development Corporation, Burlington Medical Center Institutional Review Committee, Burlington Noon Lions Club, Des Moines County March of Dimes, GRADE A+, Great River Health Systems, Iowa Area #16 Adult Education Committee, Iowa Broadcasters Association (past president), Knights of Columbus, National Association of Broadcasters, Southeast Iowa Council Boy Scout Advisory Board, St. Francis Hospital Board of Directors and the Burlington Area United Way. He was also a 40-year member of Carthage Lake Hunting and Fishing Lodge.

Jim enjoyed camping, fishing, and duck hunting, and later developed a passion for snorkeling and scuba diving. He also earned his pilot’s license as a young adult and enjoyed flying his family. Jim also sailed competitively and leisurely, with the Virgin Islands and the islands of the Lesser Antilles among his favorite destinations.

Jim loved to explore and connect with the world through travel as well as amateur radio. He secured his first amateur radio license at age 14 and remained active for another 70 years. He proudly participated in a plethora of radio contests and some DX-peditions in remote parts of the world. He even carried a portable HAM radio in his travels to be able to transmit from other countries. His primary call sign was W0NB, which now becomes a silent key.

Always up for an adventure, Jim immersed himself in learning a new language in his 70s and hiked the entirety of the Camino de Santiago with Mary.

He utilized his time at home during the early days of the COVID pandemic to write a collection of stories. A family favorite passage in the book reflects upon the moment he first met Mary while he was crafting milkshakes at the Dairy Sweet when he was only 16. He said, "I think my heart did a flip-flop right then." They became fast friends and, well, the rest is a spectacular love story that spanned well over six decades.

Jim is survived by the love of his life, Mary Livengood; daughters Susan (Robb) Junker, Shivaun (Chris) McCann, and Jennifer (Seth) Baruch; grandchildren Alex and Nick (Grace) Junker, Keely and James Michael McCann, and Benjamin, Maya, and Olivia Baruch. He is also survived by his brother Tom Livengood and sister Kathy Livengood.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Glenn and Mary Rita (Kelly) Livengood.

Jim will be remembered for his boundless curiosity, devotion to family and the way he made friends everywhere he went.

Respecting Jim’s wishes, his body has been cremated, and a private celebration of life will be held at a later date with “his girls” and their families.

 </figure>James Michael Livengood, age 84, a man of great integrity and kindness, passed peacefully while holding his wife's hand on August 12, 2025. Jim was lucky to live a full and wonderful life with his best friend, Mary June (McDonough) Livengood, whom he married in 1963.Jim grew up in Burlington, Iowa, where his gift for conversation meant he never met a stranger. His word was his bond, and to those who knew him, a handshake from Jim was as solid as a signed contract. He was a master storyteller—whether in print, on the airwaves, or in telling long, laughter-filled jokes.Jim was a proud graduate of Burlington High School (1959) and Iowa State University (1963), where he earned a degree in technical journalism and enjoyed camaraderie as a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity.His career in communications began in 1958 at KBUR radio in Burlington. He recalled in a 1987 Hawk Eye interview, “I was hired Nov. 29, 1958, and was paid $1 per hour… It was the best thing that could’ve ever happened to me.”Jim worked for The Hawk Eye newspaper in the summer of 1961. Following college graduation he worked for the Columbia Basin Herald in Moses Lake, Washington. In 1964, he returned to KBUR as an advertising representative, later becoming advertising manager in 1978 and, in 1987, general manager of KBUR and its sister station KGRS-FM. In 1988, Jim and his wife Mary, along with a partner, purchased the radio stations, returning them to local ownership for the first time since 1961. Jim and Mary retired after selling the stations in 1996 and were lucky to share nearly 30 additional years together with family, friends and exploring the world.Among Jim’s many civic and volunteer endeavors were: Burlington Area Chamber of Commerce, Burlington Area Development Corporation, Burlington Medical Center Institutional Review Committee, Burlington Noon Lions Club, Des Moines County March of Dimes, GRADE A+, Great River Health Systems, Iowa Area #16 Adult Education Committee, Iowa Broadcasters Association (past president), Knights of Columbus, National Association of Broadcasters, Southeast Iowa Council Boy Scout Advisory Board, St. Francis Hospital Board of Directors and the Burlington Area United Way. James Michael Livengood

Terry Lee Gletty, 71, of Sperry, died Thursday, August 14, 2025, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in West Burlington.

Born March 4, 1954, in Davenport, Iowa, she was the daughter of Raymond and Wilma Anderson. She married Rick Gletty on November 1, 1975.

She worked for Jack’s, Shopko and Walmart.

Terry had a very soft side that she hid very well. She was an avid reader of most any kind of book and especially liked science fiction and paranormal and jigsaw puzzles. She loved wolves, dragons and gnomes and truly loved all things Halloween and enjoyed sipping on Squirt, Busch Light, margaritas and most of all snacking on M &amp; M’s.

She was content living a simple life tending to her chickens and watching the hummingbirds. She helped host many family gatherings and was known to scare the little ones with a spooky story.

She is survived by her husband Rick Gletty; two daughters, Ammie (Nick) Shafer and Lisa Kreft (Charlie); nine grandchildren; three step children bringing six more bonus grandchildren and many great grandchildren; brother Scott Anderson and sister Barb Turner.

She was preceded in death by her parents, step son Daniel Reese and sister Deb Woolison.

The funeral service for Terry will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, August 18th at Lunning Chapel. Pastor Bill Ullom will officiate. The family will receive friends from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service. A luncheon will be held at the Drake following the service.

Memorials are suggested to the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House, ALS Research Foundation and P.A.W. Animal Shelter.

Cremation will be accorded following the funeral service and has been entrusted to the care of Lunning Chapel.

Sonja Kay Shipman, 80, of Dallas City, Ill., died at 1:40 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 10, 2025, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in West Burlington.

Sonja was born on Oct. 31, 1944, at home in Pontoosuc, Ill., to parents Floyd “Tuffy” and Elizabeth Nichols Maynard. She grew up in Pontoosuc and graduated from Dallas City High School. On Nov. 18, 1962, she married Henry G. Shipman in Pontoosuc. He preceded her in death on July 11, 2022.

Sonja had been employed by the Burlington Basket Company, and she retired from the Sheaffer Pen Company after more than twenty-five years of service. An active member of Grace Bible Church in Dallas City, Ill., she routinely helped with Vacation Bible School and church and community dinners. She also volunteered with the Dallas City Food Pantry and assisted with the Boy and Girl Scouts during her children’s youth.

Sonja started her days with a cup of coffee and reading devotionals. She loved hosting and cooking for her family and friends, and she also loved cheating them at Fast Track and card games. She enjoyed going for car and boat rides and camping. In previous years, Sonja loved shifting trot lines with her dad, Tuffy, and her sons, and enjoyed decorating wedding and birthday cakes. Most of all, she loved spending time with her large family.

Survivors include one daughter: Rhonda (Tony) Francis of Clarksville, Mo.; one daughter-in-law: Mary Shipman of Basco, Ill.; nine grandchildren: Jeremy, Jennifer, Josh, Ethan, Colten, Amanda, Steven, Lexis, and Arianna; a host of loving great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and one brother: Tom Maynard of Pontoosuc.
