Ronald D. “Ronnie” Holmes, 71, of Burlington, Iowa, died Sunday, June 29, 2025, at the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics in Iowa City.

Born on December 15, 1953, in Keokuk, Iowa, he was the son of LeRoy and Blanche (Parsons) Holmes.

Ronnie attended Keokuk Senior High School and graduated from Southeastern Community College with his CNA. He was a member of Burlington First Assembly of God. He worked in construction and maintenance his whole life until he retired. During his retirement he worked at Hopefully Yours which he enjoyed very much. In his free time, he enjoyed going to thrift stores and auctions with his special friend. They were always looking for things he loved to collect: Coca-Cola items, oil lamps, vintage garage memorabilia and antiques. Ronnie never missed an opportunity to get on his Harley Davidson and go for a ride. Even after struggling with his health, he would still find the strength to ride. Ronnie was deeply devoted to God and read his bible every day. He enjoyed sitting around talking and sharing about what he was reading with others. Ronnie was a very proud winner of a chili cook off and won first place. Most of all Ronnie loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

He is survived by his four children: Brandon Holmes, Tara Holmes, Dustin Holmes and Laura (Zac) Gayewski; nine grandchildren: Kendal, Amber, Ticionna, Hunter, Emmah, Maci, Elijah, Gibson and Clover; three siblings: Marsha Holmes, Robert Holmes and Jan Appleget. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son Brian Holmes; sister Sharon Brooks and brother in-law Lynn Appleget.

The funeral service will be held at 4:00 p.m. Thursday, July 3, 2025, at Burlington First Assembly of God with Rod Nichols officiating. A one-hour visitation will be held prior to the service at 3:00 p.m. at Burlington First Assembly of God where the family will meet with friends. Interment will be held in Hickory Grove Cemetery at a later date.

A memorial has been established in his memory.

He was a member of the “Cedar River Gang” and the “Garage Boys,” a band made up of him, his brother, and his friends.&nbsp; George loved country western music and playing his guitar.&nbsp; He also enjoyed road trips to visit family, making rings and woodworking, making planters, sheds, and his famous octagon picnic tables. George Vaughn

Rodney Fontaine Darnell, 56, died June 26, 2025, at the University of Iowa Hospitals &amp; Clinics in Iowa City. He lived a life marked not by ease, but by extraordinary strength, deep laughter, and unwavering devotion to the people he loved.&nbsp;

Born on April 3, 1969, in Burlington, Rodney entered the world with a quiet spark that would one day grow into a light that touched everyone he met.

Raised by his loving mother, Charita Diane Darnell, and his stepfather, Bernard “Chuck” Carter, Rodney learned early what it meant to persevere, to show up for others, and to face life with both grit and grace. These early lessons stayed with him as he graduated from Burlington Community High School and moved forward into adulthood, a path that would test him in ways most never experience.

On September 10, 2011, Rodney married Jaime Michelle Morris, and together they built a life that was as joyful as it was real. Their marriage was filled with shared music, jokes, and late-night laughter. More than anything, it was filled with love the kind that holds steady in sickness and in health, through every high and low.

Rodney found deep happiness in simple pleasures. He was a loyal fan of the New York Knicks and the Pittsburgh Steelers, a music lover who always had a favorite song playing, and a man who found peace in the quiet rhythm of a fishing trip. He had a gift for finding joy even in small things and for sharing that joy with others. You could count on him to crack a joke, flash a wide smile, or make someone laugh even on the hardest days. More than anything, Rodney loved his family. Though his illness may have taken physical strength, it never took away his ability to love deeply and fully.

Survivors include his wife, Jaime Darnell; three daughters, Karina Darnell, Kyleah Darnell, and Camdyn Darnell; two sons, Jaymison Darnell, and Cobaine Hardman; nine siblings, Barron Darnell, Zane Darnell, Rashad Darnell, Shamyra Carter, Shaneen Moore, Makayla Brown, Elijah Pickens, Kasey Brown, and Talesha Brown; &nbsp;father, Jimmy Brown; favorite cousin, Bridgett Stewart; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He is preceded in death by his mother, stepfather, and his grandmother, LeVern Brown.

Visitation with the family to receive friends will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 1, 2025, at Prugh Funeral Service, 3940 Division Street.

The funeral service for Mr. Darnell will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 2, 2025, at Bethany Lutheran Church with Reverend Shane A. McCampbell officiating. &nbsp;Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. &nbsp;A time of food and fellowship will be held at Bethany Lutheran Church following the burial.

A memorial has been established for his children's education.

John Franklin “Frank” Pence, 85, of Burlington, died Friday, June 27, 2025, at The Birkwood in Fort Madison. Born Jan. 13, 1940, in Lomax, Ill., he was the son of Robert and Mildred Burr Pence.

He worked in production for J.I. Case until his retirement.

He is survived by his two sons; Bryan (Elaine) Pence and Steven (Karen) Pence; three grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Ruth, and brother Robert “Burr” Pence.

According to his wishes, there will be no service. Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Lunning Chapel. Burial will be held in Carman Cemetery, Carman.

Cynthia Ann “Cindy” Young, 66, of Colusa, Ill., passed away at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, June 28, 2025, at OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria, Ill.&nbsp; Cindy was born July 4, 1958, in Fort Madison, the daughter of Ray and JoAnn Farmer Herbert. On Jan. 18, 2004, she married Elliott W. Young in Nauvoo, Ill. He preceded her in death March 31, 2022.&nbsp;

Cindy lived most of her life in Fort Madison, before moving to Colusa following her marriage. She worked at Sheaffer Pen Company in Fort Madison until it’s closing. She then worked for Henniges Automotive in Keokuk until her retirement.&nbsp;

She enjoyed spending time with her grandkids, vacationing and being on the water, especially at Pollmiller Park, near West Point, or the ocean.&nbsp; Survivors include three children: Brandy (Darren) Higgins of Chapman, Maine, Danielle (Eric Hummer) Willette of Rockton, Ill. and Aaron (Fantazia) Young of Colusa, Ill.; her father: Ray Herbert;&nbsp; nine grandchildren: Madison Willette, Audrey, Anastazia and Alayah Young, Jordan, Rowan, Laney, Dylan Higgins and Zoe Waterman and three siblings: Randy Herbert, John Herbert and Pam Chamlee.&nbsp; Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her mother and one sister: Deanna Bennett.&nbsp;

Cremation has been entrusted to Banks &amp; Beals Funeral Home.&nbsp; A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 5, 2025, at Banks &amp; Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City.&nbsp;

Barbara LaVon Lietsch, 78, of Burlington, died peacefully Monday, June 23, 2025, at her home with her husband by her side.

Born March 13, 1947, in San Diego, Calif., she was the daughter of Robert and Peggy Austen Mitchley. In 1968, she married the love of her life, Tom Lietsch, a sailor in the United States Navy. Together, they built a life, raised two children, Eric and Stacia, and traveled the country, making hundreds of friends along the way.

Barbara was a consummate homemaker who loved to clean, cook, decorate, and collect antiques and treasures. She was kind, generous, and a mother to all. When young sailors on the Navy base were far from their families, she would open her home and invite them in for a home cooked meal.

Her greatest joy was her four grandchildren and her great-grandson. Her fun-loving spirit and appreciation for life’s simple pleasures live on in them.

Barbara is survived by her husband, Tom; her son, Eric (Jennifer) Lietsch of Burlington; her daughter, Stacia (Curt) Mattan of Monmouth, Ill.; her grandchildren, Ming (Tate) Sattler, Mei Lietsch, John Mattan, and Molly Mattan; and her great-grandson, Wesley Sattler. She is also survived by her brother, John Mitchley, and her sisters, Lisa Person and Margaret Bell, along with their families.

She is reunited in heaven with her parents, her baby sister Lorraine, and many loved ones from her large extended family.&nbsp;

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh Crematory.

The Graveside Committal Service for Mrs. Lietsch will be &nbsp;11 a.m., Tuesday, July 1, 2025, at St. Mary's Cemetery in West Burlington. A time of fellowship will be held at the Paddlewheel Lounge following the burial.

Haz Mae Ross, 78, of Burlington, died Tuesday, June 24, 2025, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. Born Oct. 24, 1946, in Mount Pleasant, she was the daughter of Frank and Helen June McKenzie.She married Randy Ross on Feb. 11, 1989.

Haz worked as a teacher’s aide for the West Central School System. She previously worked for I.A.A.P. for 15 years and Vista Baker for 20 years. She took pride in teaching little kids how to read and loved working with them.

She absolutely loved sunflowers and garden gnomes. She enjoyed being out on the river, taking drives, listening to the Blues, having a cold Coors Light, being outdoors, and gardening. Her time spent with her grandchildren, and her dog, Ruby, was very precious to her.

She is survived by her husband, Randy Ross; children Rick (Shelley) Milks, Lon (Melanie) Milks, Jodi (Steve) Arnold, Troy (Becky) Courtois, Janelle Ross and Zach Ross; 12 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; sister Marvyl Craff and brother Floyd McKenzie.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Scott and sister Rose.

According to her wishes cremation has been accorded and entrusted to the care of Lunning Chapel. A celebration of life will be held in October.

She enjoyed being out on the river, taking drives, listening to the Blues, having a cold Coors Light, being outdoors, and gardening. Her time spent with her grandchildren, and her dog, Ruby, was very precious to her.She is survived by her husband, Randy Ross; children Rick (Shelley) Milks, Lon (Melanie) Milks, Jodi (Steve) Arnold, Troy (Becky) Courtois, Janelle Ross and Zach Ross; 12 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; sister Marvyl Craff and brother Floyd McKenzie.She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Scott and sister Rose.According to her wishes cremation has been accorded and entrusted to the care of Lunning Chapel. A celebration of life will be held in October.

Stephen John “Steve” Wenke, 69 of Bonaparte, passed away at 9:36 a.m. Tuesday, June 24, 2025, at the Select Specialty Hospital in Davenport.

He was born on Jan. 6, 1956, in Fort Madison, the son of Ferdinand Joseph and Lois Mary Anderson Wenke. He married Carol Severson, they later divorced.

Survivors include his daughter Amber Wenke (Josh) of Farmington, Iowa; two sons: Victor (Brandii) Wenke of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, Shane Severson; grandchildren: Konner, Mattisyn, Arabella, Tytin, Layla, Berkley; siblings: Susan (Gary) Spencer of Fort Madison, Iowa, Sam (Rita) Wenke of Bonaparte, Iowa, Cynthia (Rick) Eden of Bonaparte, Iowa and Sarah Wenke of Ottumwa, Iowa. Also surviving are several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Steve was a graduate of Harmony High School. He farmed and retired from Riverside Plastics in Bonaparte. He enjoyed farming, canoeing and most of all, spending time with his grandchildren.

A visitation with family receiving friends will be held from 10 a.m. to 12 noon Saturday, June 28, 2025, at Schmitz Funeral Home in Farmington.

Andrew Walter “Andy” Heins,&nbsp;32, of Donnellson, passed away Saturday evening, June 21, 2025, near Wever, Iowa, following a boating accident.

He was born on June 30, 1992, in Fort Madison, the son of Glen Fredrick and Karen Durand Heins. On July 8, 2017, he married Abbie Barnett in Keokuk. They later divorced.

He is survived by his two sons: Aaron Heins, Abraham Heins; parents: Karen Durand of Dallas City, Fred Heins of Donnellson; brother: Dylan Heins of Donnellson, and grandfather: Bob Durand of Dallas City. Also surviving are several aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his grandmothers: Kathy VanHyning, Norma Heins; grandfather: Glen Heins and two cousins: Amy and Amanda.

Andy was a 2010 graduate of Central Lee High School. He worked at Siemens in Fort Madison. He enjoyed fishing, anything mechanical, shooting guns and most of all, spending time with his sons.

A visitation with the family receiving friends will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, June 28, 2025, at Schmitz Funeral Home in Donnellson.

Richard Lee “Dick” Ketcham, 93, of LaHarpe, Ill., passed away at 9:05 p.m.&nbsp;Tuesday, June 24, 2025 at the Hickory Grove Supportive Living in Carthage, Ill. Richard was born May 6, 1932, in Burnside, Ill., the son of Homer and Ida Boyd Ketcham. On June 6, 1953, he married Kathryn J. McBride at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Carthage. She preceded him in death April 27, 1995. On February 14, 1997, he married Marcella Hardy Reed at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Dallas City. She preceded him in death on Jan. 9, 2019.&nbsp;

He is survived by six children: Steve Ketcham of Colchester, Ill., Stephanie (Fred) Doyle of Warsaw, Ill., Andrea (Vic) Schelin of Riverdale, Iowa, Janelle (Mehrdad) Yassan of Grand Prairie, Texas, Angela (Mike) Pollock of LaHarpe, and Robert (Heather) Ketcham of Streator, Illinois; one daughter-in-law: Kathy Ketcham of Danville, Iowa; one step-daughter: Jean (Noel) Carden of Dallas City, 20 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.&nbsp;

Besides his wives, he was preceded in death by one son: James Ketcham; one grandson: Dustin Ketcham; one great-grandchild: Korbin Rogers; three sisters: Bonnie Martin, Betty Schiefedeker and Mary Harnetiaux; five brothers: Robert “Boyd”, Eugene, James, Keith and Kenneth Ketcham.&nbsp; Richard was a 1950 graduate of Carthage High School. Shortly after high school he began farming with his father in the Pilot Grove and Durham Townships until 1972. Following his farming career, he moved to LaHarpe and began working at General Electric in Burlington, Iowa, until his retirement in 1994.&nbsp;

Dorothy Jean Plank, 100, of LaHarpe, Ill., passed away at 11:08 p.m. Saturday, June 21, 2025, at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria, Ill.&nbsp; Dorothy was born Feb. 1, 1925, in Niota, Ill., the daughter of Loyd L. and Nancy Moore Breiner. On Nov. 18, 1942, she married William M. “Bill” Plank in Kahoka, Mo. Following their marriage, Dorothy and Bill relocated to the Galesburg, Ill., area. She worked as a Licensed Dental Assistant for Dr. Dayton and Dr. Pacey. She also helped her husband on the farm and worked for a time at Alton Box Board in Galesburg. In 1969, she and Bill once again relocated to Maryville, Ariz. She continued as a Dental Assistant in Phoenix for Dr. Diamond. Shortly after Bill’s passing on Feb. 16, 1991, she returned to LaHarpe.&nbsp; She enjoyed living life on her own terms, being independent up to her final days, and being ornery and playful with her family. She also enjoyed playing golf with friends at Lake Bracken Country Club, near Galesburg. She was a member of the former LaHarpe American Legion Auxiliary, LaHarpe Methodist Church, and the Arizona Business and Professional Women Club.&nbsp; Survivors include one son: Marty Plank of Galesburg, Ill.; one grandson: Tony Plank of Denver, Colo., three great-grandchildren: Alex, Madison and MacKenzie Plank all of Denver; five sisters: Pauline Jones of LaHarpe, Charlene Wilson of Blandinsville, Patricia Huston of New Boston, and Jo Frye of Muscatine, and numerous nieces and nephews.&nbsp; Besides her husband, Bill, she was preceded in death by one daughter: Nancy Culp; one grandson: Toby Plank; one brother: Lloyd “Gene” Breiner and seven sisters: Louise Thompson, Thelma Figg, Virginia Kerfoot, Wyvonne Byers, Joy Byers, Lucille Luton and Marilyn Cahill.&nbsp;

Sandra Kay McCannon, 80, of Burlington, died Sunday, June 22, 2025, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in West Burlington. Born April 29, 1945, she was the daughter of Walter Forrest and Edna Pearl McCannon.

She was a 1963 graduate of Burlington High School.

She was a member of the Burlington Charter Chapter of the American Business Women’s Association (ABWA) for over 20 years in which she held all offices, organized seminars and twice was named Woman of the Year. She was a volunteer for Burlington Steamboat Days for 14 years on Souvenir and Entertainment Committees.

Sandra worked for Niehaus Motors Company for 35 years until her retirement in 2011.

Her hobbies included reading, word search puzzles, traveling, genealogy, crafts and flowers. She loved all animals, especially cats. She enjoyed decorating cakes for over 30 years and dining out and going to the movies with her friends.

She is survived by several nieces and nephews whom she adored.

She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings, Harvey Eugene, Walter, Forrest, Lloyd, Bill, Don and Margaret.

Per her wishes, there will be no services. Cremation has been accorded and entrusted to the care of Lunning Chapel. Burial will be held at a later date in Carman Cemetery, Carman, Illinois.

Sandra Kay McCannon

Clarence Samuel "Clar" Powell, 78, of Mediapolis, passed away peacefully on Friday, June 20, 2025, at Addington Place in Burlington.

Born December 12, 1946, in Burlington, he was the son of William John and Anna Frances Lasdauskis Powell. In the spring of 1970, married Sandra Claudette Dumse Spiker. Together they had one child, Marcus William Powell. They later divorced.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Clar took on many adventures, including managing the bowling alley at Camp Henson in Hawaii after he was wounded in Vietnam, drove sprint cars at 34 Raceway, played semi-pro football for the Burlington River Chiefs, and was a dedicated bodybuilder, earning the title of Mr. Iowa in 1987. He spent the majority of his adult life as a welder at J.I. Case Company and was the President of Local 807. After leaving JI Case, he worked for the Des Moines County Conservation. His last role was courthouse security at the Des Moines County courthouse.&nbsp;

The biggest life event that shaped the trajectory of all the rest of his life, both good and bad, was when he joined the 2nd Battalion 3rd Marines 3rd Marine Division Company F weapons Platoon. He was part of the defensive battle known as the Hill Battles of Keh Sahn. He was wounded in action on May 9, 1967 and received a Purple Heart for his service that day.&nbsp;

Because of the Hill Fights, Clar had a drive to protect the safety and rights of others. This shaped him to be a protective father, the president of the Local where he was able to protect the rights of fellow co-workers, and to pursue careers in law enforcement and conservation. He was a comrade to many and always up to share a compliment to someone who was having a bad day.&nbsp;

Survivors include his son, Marcus (Annie) Powell; three grandsons, Tayler (Shelby) Powell, Nick Powell, and Brett Powell; one great-granddaughter, Crue, all of New London; one brother, William "Bill" Powell of Sawyer, Iowa.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by 24 Marines from his company; including Lenard Picanso, his very best friend that he missed until the very day he died.

Visitation will be from noon until 6 p.m. with the family to receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, June 26, 2025, at Prugh Funeral Service, 3940 Division Street. He will be laid to rest in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.

A memorial has been established for Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice.

His last role was courthouse security at the Des Moines County courthouse.&nbsp;The biggest life event that shaped the trajectory of all the rest of his life, both good and bad, was when he joined the 2nd Battalion 3rd Marines 3rd Marine Division Company F weapons Platoon. He was part of the defensive battle known as the Hill Battles of Keh Sahn. He was wounded in action on May 9, 1967 and received a Purple Heart for his service that day.&nbsp;Because of the Hill Fights, Clar had a drive to protect the safety and rights of others. This shaped him to be a protective father, the president of the Local where he was able to protect the rights of fellow co-workers, and to pursue careers in law enforcement and conservation. He was a comrade to many and always up to share a compliment to someone who was having a bad day.&nbsp;Survivors include his son, Marcus (Annie) Powell; three grandsons, Tayler (Shelby) Powell, Nick Powell, and Brett Powell; one great-granddaughter, Crue, all of New London; one brother, William "Bill" Powell of Sawyer, Iowa.Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by 24 Marines from his company; including Lenard Picanso, his very best friend that he missed until the very day he died.Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh Crematory.Visitation will be from noon until 6 p.m. with the family to receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, June 26, 2025, at Prugh Funeral Service, 3940 Division Street. Clarence Samuel "Clar" Powell

L. Sean Hanger, 61, of Burlington, died Friday, June 20, 2025, at his home, surrounded by his family. Born on April 13, 1964, in Monmouth, Ill., he was the son of Larry J. and Roberta Arnold Hanger. On April 6, 2002, he married Leann Johnson. She survives.

Sean was a 1982 graduate of Southern High School. He worked for General Electric for 25 years where he retired from in 2014. He attended Raritan Baptist Church for many years. In his free time, he enjoyed being outdoors, camping, hunting, basking in the sunshine and boating on the Mississippi River all the while enjoying his favorite beverage an Old Milwaukee Light. Sean enjoyed watching the Chicago Cubs, Chicago Bears and NASCAR. Most of all Sean loved nothing more than being with his family and grandchildren who brought him the most joy.

He is survived by his mother Roberta, wife Leann; five children: Carlee (Brandon) Hanger and Bryce (Brittany) Hanger all of Raritan, Ill., Colter (Barbie) Jarrett, Trent (Ashley) Jarrett and Emily (Corey) Allen all of Burlington; fourteen grandchildren: Carson Sean, Kinslee, Kendall, Anthony, Alaina, Bentley, Carter, Cora, Brayden, Tucker, Ayda, Alice, Alivia and Hendrick; one sister Gretchen (John) Alsager. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents and father Larry.

Per his wishes cremation has been entrusted and accorded to the care of Lunning Chapel.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 2, 2025, at Lunning Chapel with Gretchen Alsager officiating. A two-hour visitation will be held prior to the service at 12 to 2 p.m. at Lunning Chapel where the family will meet with friends. A celebration of life will be held following the service. Place is still to be determined.

A memorial has been established in his memory for Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center Home Health and Hospice.

Shirley L. Hancock, 67, of New London, passed away peacefully on June 19, 2025, surrounded by her loving family at the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics in Iowa City.

Born on June 9, 1958, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Kenneth and Marilyn (Poland) Sutcliffe. On Sept. 10, 1994, in Burlington, she married Jim Hancock. He survives.

Shirley was a 1976 graduate of Burlington High School and graduated from Southeastern Community College. She worked for the Wal-Mart Distribution Center for 34 years where she retired from. The last 10 years at Wal-Mart Distribution Center she worked dispatch. Shirley was one of the original founding members of Lake Geode. She loved her pets, camping, being outdoors, hiking the trails at Lake Geode and cooking big meals for her family. She and Jim enjoyed taking trips to state and national parks but her most favorite trip was to Jamaica. Most of all Shirley enjoyed nothing more than being with her family, which brought her the most joy in life.

She is survived by her husband Jim; siblings: Lena (Everett) Fye of Olena, Illinois, Ken Sutcliffe and Tina (Tom) Smith, all of Burlington; two aunts: Karon Belcher of Burlington and Beverly Myllo of Oklahoma. Also surviving are several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, parents, several aunts, uncles, cousins and other loving family members.

The funeral service for Shirley will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 24, 2025, at Lunning Chapel with Pastor Larry Dodds officiating. A one-hour visitation will be held prior to the service at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 24, 2025, at Lunning Chapel where the family will meet with friends.

Shirley Hancock

Virginia Robu, 97, of West Point and previously of Mediapolis and Morning Sun areas, died at 8:30 a.m. Friday, June 20, 2025. She was born on April 1, 1928, to Henry and Gladys Stigge Hauswirth. While working as an operator for Northwest Bell Telephone in Burlington, she met Mayford “Louie” Robu, and they were united in marriage on Aug. 31, 1952.

Virginia was a graduate of Mediapolis High School and worked several years in the Mediapolis School District. She was known to many in the area from her work at the Mediapolis Dental Office where she was the receptionist for many years. Virginia enjoyed many travels and hobbies in her life and was a long-time member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Mediapolis.

Survivors include her daughter-in-law Connie of Mauldin, S.C., a son Randy (Lynn) of West Point; four grandchildren Jason Robu of Mauldin, S.C., Heather (Jason) Garner of Columbia, S.C., Dalton Robu of West Point, and Alison Robu of Cedar Rapids; several great grandchildren, nieces and nephews; and two sisters-in-law Donna Hauswirth of Sperry and Dixie Hauswirth of Morning Sun.

Virginia was preceded in death by her parents; husband Louie; son, Robin; her three brothers Leroy “Whitey” Hauswirth, Floyd Hauswirth and Lawrence Hauswirth and one granddaughter.

The funeral service for Mrs. Robu will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 25, 2025, at Lunning Chapel with Pastor Jerleen Schlesser officiating. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 25, 2025. Interment will be in Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery.

Robert Shane "Bob" Thomason Sr., 56, of Burlington, passed away Saturday, June 14, 2025, at his home.

He was born June 1, 1969, the son of Brian and Linda DeSpain. In 1986, he met the love of his life, Deanna Lynn Stotler. They later married on April 20, 1988, in Mount Pleasant. Together, they had three children: Kory (Joann) Thomason of Mediapolis, Heather (Jimmy) Nelson of Milan, Ill., and Brittany (Matt Alcorn) Thomason of Beardstown, Ill. Together, they also shared six grandchildren: Elizabeth Thomason, Bobby Thomason Jr. Ella-Joy Thomason, Madison Nelson, James Nelson IV and Adalynn Alcorn.

Bob was one of the hardest working men there ever was, he was tirelessly devoted to this wife of 37 years, a proud father and a proud “Papaw”. He was a loyal son and friend. He was often riding his trike or spending time with his wife.

He is survived by his wife, three children, six grandchildren, mother Linda, brother Brian DeSpain, Pamela Hill, two half sisters Wendy Nobel and Cassie Moser.

He was preceded in death by his father Brian DeSpain Sr., aunt Delores Judd and sister Brandy DeSpain.

Robert Shane "Bob" Thomason Sr.

Randall Lee "Randy" Hachmeister, 73, of Burlington, passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, June 8, 2025, surrounded by his adoring family.

Born April 13, 1952, in Carroll, to Gerald E. and Shirley Mae (Bell) Hachmeister, Randy was one of six brothers. Growing up in Coon Rapids, Randy learned the value of hard work, deep roots, and family ties that last a lifetime. He was the kind of kid who turned every chore into a game. That spirited creativity never left him. On May 17, 1980, he married the love of his life, Janet Welsh in Sciota, Ill. Together, they built a home filled with laughter and love.

Randy spent his professional life as a commercial paint salesman for Diamond Vogel Paint, but his most important job was being a dedicated husband, father, and grandfather. He had a unique gift for making everyday moments magical. Time spent with him included joking around, games, and a steady supply of good-natured mischief.

Whether launching apples across the yard with a homemade potato gun, mowing a go-kart track into his front lawn, or turning a simple backyard pool party into a full-scale fireworks display, Randy had one rule in life: make it fun. He was a man who loved the outdoors; whether he was casting a line, hunting in the woods, scuba diving in clear blue water, or hitting the golf course, Randy was most at peace under the open sky. But more than anything, he loved sharing those experiences with his children and grandchildren.&nbsp;

He was a dedicated family man who showed up for every one of his kids sporting events and cheered loudly from the sidelines. He loved talking to his family and hearing about things going on in their lives, especially when these conversations involved sharing a glass of one of his favorite bourbons. He was a steady presence and a constant source of encouragement.

He is survived by his wife, Janet, who matched his wit and warmth for 45 years; his three children, Zachary (Leah) Hachmeister of Lisle, IL, Adam (Nora) Hachmeister of Raleigh, NC, and Ashlyn (Brian) Turner of Ballwin, MO; nine grandchildren, Avery Hachmeister, Emma Hachmeister, Gage Hachmeister, Decker Hachmeister, Beau Hachmeister, Selah Hachmeister, Elle Turner, Annelise Turner, and Elijah Turner, each of whom carries a bit of his spirit, laughter, and boundless curiosity.

He is also survived by four brothers, Greg Hachmeister, Jeff (Laura) Hachmeister, Mark (Linda) Hachmeister, and John (Dee) Hachmeister all of Coon Rapids; his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Mitchell (Sandy) Welsh and Melinda (Keith Donaldson) Welsh all of Blandinsville, Ill.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, David Hachmeister; parents-in-law, Stanley and Roberta Welsh; and sister-in-law, Ellen Welsh Keithley.

A celebration of Randy's life will take place from 7 to 9:30 p.m. Saturday, July 5, 2025, at Spirit Hollow Golf Club. In true Randy fashion, it will be less about mourning and more about remembering the man who made everything brighter, louder, more fun and who believed that every family gathering deserved a grand finale.

Randall Lee "Randy" Hachmeister

Monica Ann Simmons Blanck, 89, of New London, passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 19, 2025, at Park Place Elder Living in Mount Pleasant, under hospice care, surrounded by her loving family.

Monica was born on July 16, 1935, in North English, Iowa, to Frank and Margaret LaRue Rhoades Simmons. On Dec. 29, 1956, she married the love of her life, Gary L. Blanck, at the New London United Methodist Church.&nbsp;

She was a proud 1953 graduate of New London High School and the Burlington Hospital School of Nursing.&nbsp; As a lifelong registered nurse, Monica worked at the MHI in Mt. Pleasant, then for 25 years worked as an office nurse for Drs. H. M. Readinger and William Vaughan in New London, retiring in 2000.&nbsp; Monica was also deeply committed to her community having served on the board of the Dover Historical Society.&nbsp; She had a keen interest in restoration, spending much of her life remodeling homes with her husband with more than twenty of those throughout New London. She and Gary loved to travel and one of her favorite traditions was traveling to Coin-Op shows in Chicago.&nbsp; When Gary was on the fire department, Monica took classes to become part of the women’s auxiliary.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Monica is survived by her husband of New London; daughters Tammy Watts (Mark Pugh) of Danville and Julie (Kory) Lindell of New London; grandchildren Spencer (Jena) Watts, Layne (Travis) Luttenegger, Miranda (Josh) Gray, and Baylee (Spencer) Lindell Schneier; five great-grandchildren, Lilly, William, and Henry Luttenegger, and Kainen and Kooper Watts; and two nephews, William (Izzy) Simmons and Ed (Winnie) Simmons.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother William; son-in-law Steve Watts; nephew Andrew Simmons; and great-niece Valerie Simmons.

June E. Pisone&nbsp;passed away peacefully, May 14, 2025, in her home at the age of 99. She was two months shy of her 100th Birthday. June was born in Spirit Lake. She was the daughter of Lara ‘Hedges’ Baird and Walter Baird. At the age of 16, June married Robert Cocherel just before he left for WW2. At the age of 17, June was on her own and started working at Shafer Pen Company. Three years later, her husband returned home from the war, and they started a family. June had three children, Mikey, MaryLou, and Vickie. June was preceded in death by her beloved little boy, Mikey, who died at the age of 5. Later, June and her husband Bob moved their two children to Southern California. June ultimately had four grandchildren: Wendy, Jeremy, Molly and Sally.

Later, June and her husband moved to Idaho, where she worked in airport security and ultimately for the Boise Police Department. June left the police department to care for her aging mother. She was later widowed, but June married the love of her life, Bob Waldron. The two loved to jump in their camper and travel. They would also go dancing together. Once again, she was widowed. She later met and married Americo “Jack” Pisone. The two of them were married for 17 years before she was, once again, widowed. 

June was preceded in death by her parents, three husbands, all three of her children, and one grandchild. June continued to live on her own and was actively involved at the senior center, dancing, as well as feeding all the neighborhood birds (and a few squirrels). She lived a full, active life and was a joy for all who got to know her. She was very independent and extremely smart. She remained as such all the way to the end of her life. She died exactly as she wished–peacefully, in her sleep, in her own home. She will be greatly missed by her last surviving family members: Wendy Puthuff, granddaughter; Jeremy Breese, grandson; Molly Almquist, granddaughter; and her dear nephew, Tony Baird. “The master said, ‘Well done, my good and faithful servant. You have been faithful in handling this small amount, so now I will give you many more responsibilities. Let’s celebrate together!’

A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, June 20, 2025, at Greenglade Cemetery in Farmington, Iowa.

Burial will be at Greenglade Cemetery, Farmington.

Vicki Lynn Johnson, 76, of Biggsville, Ill., passed away on Friday, June 13, 2025, at her home surrounded by her loving family.&nbsp;&nbsp;

She was born on May 24, 1949, in Elmhurst, Ill., the beloved daughter of Edgar T. Haswell, Jr., and Phyllis L. (Holford) Haswell. She graduated from Richmond-Burton High School in Richmond, Ill., and went on to attend the Christ Community Hospital School of Nursing in Oak Lawn, where she distinguished herself as Valedictorian of her class. Vicki later continued her education at Elmhurst College in Elmhurst, Ill., further exemplifying her dedication to academic and professional excellence.

On July 5, 1970, Vicki married Richard Johnson in Richmond, Ill.; he survives.

Vicki dedicated many years of her life to a fulfilling career as a Registered Nurse, serving with compassion and professionalism at several esteemed healthcare institutions. Her work included positions at Community Hospital in Eldora, Silver Cross Hospital in Joliet, Ill., school nurse for the Elwood School District in Elwood, Ill., and Great River Medical Center in Burlington. In the later years of her career, she provided comfort and care to patients and their families at the Great River Hospice House in Burlington, a role that reflected her deep empathy and unwavering commitment to others.

Vicki was a devoted member of the First Presbyterian Church in Burlington, IA, where she faithfully served in several roles included singing in the choir.&nbsp; She also taught Sunday School and served as a Ruling Elder in churches that her husband pastored in. Her dedication to her faith and her church community was evident in all that she did, reflecting a life grounded in service, leadership, and spiritual commitment.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Vicki lived a rich and fulfilling life, marked by countless accomplishments and joyful contributions to her community. She was proudly crowned the McHenry County 4-H Queen and later served as a dedicated Jackson County 4-H Leader. Always generous with her time and talents, she prepared dinners for the Joliet Township High School Football Team. A gifted craftswoman, Vicki delighted in creating Raggedy Ann &amp; Andy dolls, stuffed animals, Cabbage Patch dolls, and Beanie Babies, spreading warmth and cheer through her handmade treasures. She was an active member of both the Elwood School Boosters Club and the Biggsville PC Campfire Girls. Perhaps most memorably, Vicki brought smiles as "L’Wheezy the Clown" at the Pediatric Department of Silver Cross Hospital in Joliet, where she lovingly taught children with asthma how to properly use inhalers and manage their condition with confidence and courage.

Surviving Vicki is her husband, Richard Johnson of Biggsville, Ill.; her children, Matthew T. (Christine LaChance) Johnson of Joliet, Ill., Krista R. (Nathan) DeHaan of Brainerd, Minn.; her grandchildren, John DeHaan, Cara DeHaan, Jordan Johnson, Madison Johnson, Christopher Johnson, Kayla Bogda, and Tommy LaChance; and her great granddaughter, Lilliana Lukas.&nbsp; Also surviving is her sister, Donna (Harold) Harm of Spencer, Wis.; her brother, James Haswell of Marshfield, Wis.; and several nieces and nephews.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Linda Jones.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Linda Ann Ciska Priest, 83, of Burlington died Thursday evening June 12, 2025, at the Klein Center of West Burlington.

Born on Nov. 12, 1941, in Albia, at the home of her grandparents Mark and Ollie Dewey, she was the daughter of Leo A. and Barbara J. Dewey Ciska. When she was born, her dad was an electrical welder for the C.B.&amp;Q. Railroad, and her parents lived in a bunk car that traveled all over the railroad tracks.

Linda attended many different schools the first thirteen years of her life until she moved to Burlington and attended Horace Mann Middle School- Burlington High School where she graduated in 1959 and Burlington Junior College graduating in 1961.She went on to Northeast Missouri State Teacher’s College to receive her teaching degree in French and English. After college she spent the summer in France in a foreign exchange teaching program.

Linda taught the first three years in Dewitt, Iowa where every summer would take her French Students to Quebec, Canada. She moved to Indianapolis, Indiana where she met and married Jerry J. Priest. She later received her Master’s degree in Muncie, Indiana, and continued teaching French and English for 30 plus years in the Indiana school system.

Linda’s hobbies included needlepoint, knitting, bowling, reading and was a member of the Quilting Bee’s at her church. She would take her nieces and nephew every summer for two weeks and do fun things.

She is survived by her sisters: Barbara Ciska McCollum and Sandra Ciska Klesner, also three nieces, Bobbie Cobb, Kimberly Taeger, and Kelli MacGregor and one nephew, Chad McCollum; eight great and five great-great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Leo and Barbara Ciska, her husband Jerry J. Priest, and brother-in-law Jerry McCollum.

According to Linda’s wishes she has been cremated and inurnment with a graveside service will be held at a later date in Washington Park East Cemetery in Indianapolis, Indiana beside her husband.

Nyla Kae French, 70, of Dallas City, Ill., passed away Tuesday, June 17, 2025 peacefully at her home.&nbsp;

Nyla was born April 6, 1955 in LaHarpe, Ill., the daughter of D. Nyal and Jacquelyn M. Strong Thomas. Nyla and her brother Bill spent their childhood growing up in their family's home on the Mississippi River in Dallas County. She was a 1973 graduate of Dallas City High School, attended Southeastern Community College in West Burlington, Iowa, and received her bachelor's degree from Iowa Wesleyan University in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa. Nyla began her 35-year art teaching career at her alma mater in Dallas City. Following the school’s consolidation with Nauvoo-Colusa, she continued as an art teacher there until her retirement in 2024. Nyla influenced many lives throughout her career. Her passion for art inspired many students to pursue their own creative endeavors in the art field. Early in her career, she taught summer art classes at the Burlington Arts for Living Center. She volunteered her talents to design the set of many school plays and musicals. She also donated her art for many worthy causes. One of Nyla's favorite things other than art was traveling. Over the years, many special trips were made out east to see her brother Bill. Besides art and teaching, Nyla also loved the river, boating, cooking and enjoying meals with her family, and most importantly, spending time with her grandchildren who were the light of her life.&nbsp;
