Dale Robert Bartelt, 75, of Mediapolis died Thursday, Oct. 12, 2023, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in West Burlington.

Dale was born Dec. 12, 1947, in Algona, and was the fifth of six sons born to Harry and Marie (Brandt) Bartelt. They lived on a farm north of Titonka. He grew up learning the value of hard work alongside his father and brothers and established his lifelong love of farming.

Dale graduated from Titonka High School with the class of 1966. He attended college at Iowa State University and graduated in 1970 with a major in Ag Business. Dale was united in marriage to Julie Grove on October 9, 1971, at First Baptist Church in Corydon. They welcomed two children into their family, Shannon Leigh and Robert Boyd.

Dale's first job was as a field representative for Grinnell Mutual Reinsurance Company. He came to love the insurance business over the next 47 years of his career. He and Julie moved to Mediapolis, in 1976 where Dale managed DMC Mutual and owned and operated Eland Agency for 35 years. Dale served on the board of directors for Grinnell Mutual for 33 years, serving as board president his last 6 years. He was honored for his years of leadership by the naming of the Bartelt Conference and Education Center at Grinell Mutual in 2017.

Dale had a strong Christian faith and was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church in Burlington. He and Julie helped care for the grounds and gardens as part of the landscape crew. Dale never lost his love of the farm and acquired a farm property on Highway 61 which he turned into a showplace. He restored the two old barns on the property and the oldest, an 1870s bank barn, was given a barn of distinction award by the Iowa Barn Foundation and was included in their All state barn tours. He and Julie served as the Des Moines County representatives for the IBF. His final wish was to have a covered bridge built over Knotty Creek, which runs through the farm, and it was completed in May 2023.

Dale had many interests including collecting antiques and vintage farm toys and implements. He was active in various community organizations including the Planning and Zoning Board, Mediapolis Athletic Boosters, and the Lions Club. Dale's greatest joy was spending time with his family, especially his six grandchildren.

Dale and Julie traveled extensively in the U.S. and Europe. They made a goal to visit all 424 parks and monuments in the National Park System. They proudly displayed a map marked with the locations of the 220 that they were able to visit together.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Julie; daughter and son-in-law Shannon Bartelt-Hunt and George Hunt of Omaha; son and daughter-in-law Robert and Kate Bartelt of Cedar Falls; grandchildren Samuel Hunt, Olivia Bartelt, Alden Hunt, Daniel Bartelt, Audrey Bartelt, and Abigail Bartelt; brothers Wayne (Eljean) Bartelt of Cedar Falls, Lloyd (Verla) Bartelt of Woden, Glenn Bartelt of Maquoketa; brothers-in-law Lad (Patty) Grove of Ames and Ted Grove (Shanni Dimmit) of Clatskanie, Ore. as well as a host of beloved nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Merlin and Keith, a sister who died at birth, and sisters-in-law Alice, Darlene, and Peggy Bartelt.

Family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 22, 2023, at Prugh Funeral Service, 3940 Division St.

The celebration of life for Mr. Bartelt will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, Oct. 23, 2023, at Messiah Lutheran Church.&nbsp; Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.&nbsp; A time of food and fellowship will be held in Messiah Lutheran Church following the burial.

Starting in 1981, Dale battled five different types of cancer throughout his lifetime. He defeated them all until a final cancer diagnosis came in late 2022. Donald “Ray” Harris, 77, of Burlington, died Friday, Sept. 22, 2023, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in West Burlington.

He was born Aug. 20, 1946, in Tulsa, Okla., and was the son of Willie and Ida Mae Pouncil Harris. He married the love of his life, Margo Parrish, on Nov. 25, 1987, in Tulsa, Okla.

He attended Booker T. Washington High School in Tulsa, Okla.

Ray would then go on to work for Champion Spark Plug for 30 years, where he handled a multitude of responsibilities along with being a proud Union Rep and Grievance Fighter.&nbsp;

Ray attended Heritage Baptists Church and was a St. John's African Methodist Episcopal Church member. He was known for numerous acts of charity; such as starting a food pantry and working for United Way. After Margo, some of his other loves were golfing, fishing, hunting, playing dominoes, listening to music, watching Western movies, and last but not least he was an avid Minnesota Vikings fan.

Survivors include his wife of 35 years, Margo Harris of Burlington; his children, Travares (Jennifer) Harris of Minneapolis, Minn., Shayla Harris of Plymouth, Minn., Deanna Lewis of Milwaukee, WI, Harry (Trisha) Lewis of Newton, and James Lewis of Semi Valley, Calif.; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; three sisters, Odessa Burkhaulter of Tulsa, Okla., Cathy Harris of Tulsa, Okla., and Dianna Kaye Harris of Tulsa, Okla.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two children, Donald Ray Harris Jr. and Nina Harris, granddaughter DeAndrya Harris, his five brothers, Bobby, Willie Jr., Earnest, Wilbert, and Michael Harris, and sister Maybelline Harris, Alden Harris, Alire Rogene, and Marilyn Harris.&nbsp;

Sherry Lee Wolfe, 75, of Burlington and formerly of Oakville for 27 years, died Monday, Oct. 9, 2023, at her home.

Born June 13, 1948, she was the daughter of Lyle and Mary Hasten Brandstetter.

Sherry graduated from Burlington High School in 1966 and from Burlington Hospital School of Nursing in 1969 with her RN. She went on to serve her country in the United States Navy. She was stationed at the Newport Navy Hospital for 2 years and in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She served during the Vietnam conflict and was commissioned as LT. J. G.

On Sept. 20, 1969, she married John Wolfe Sr, in Burlington at First Christian Church.

Sherry was a Registered Nurse at Burlington Medical Center and Great River Medical Center as an OB nurse. She retired Oct. 11, 2012.

Sherry was a member of Harmony Bible Church and the Jane Delano Retired Nurses Association. Her hobbies included gardening, canning, reading, ladies’ Bible study, and cake decorating for family members. She supported all her grandchildren’s activities and was present for the births of most of her grandkids.

Survivors include John, her husband of 54 years; two daughters Julie (Jonathan) Zimmer of Sperry, Amanda (Steve) Reid of Burlington; one son John Wolfe Jr of Davenport; six grandchildren Jonah and Jesse Zimmer, Ryan and Rylee Reid and Winnifred and Everett Wolfe; three brothers Joseph (Beth) Brandstetter of Redmond, Ore., David (Beth) Brandstetter of Vinton, Todd (Danette) Brandstetter of Middletown; one sister Cynthia (Darrell) Bachtell of Burlington, and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

The Memorial Service for Sherry will be 11 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 14, 2023, at Lunning Chapel with Pastor Nathan Williams officiating. Inurnment will be at Edwards Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service starting.

Sherry Lee Wolfe

Miriam Elizabeth Francis, 92, of Fort Madison, formerly of Burlington, died Monday, Oct. 9, 2023, at her residence at the Kensington in Fort Madison.

Born, January 3, 1931, in Salem, Iowa, she was the daughter of Walter and Mary Hudson Elmore. She attended Salem elementary and graduated from Salem High School.

On July 12, 1950, she married Bruce Robert “Bob” Francis in Mt. Pleasant. He died July 25, 2021.

She retired from factory work in 1994 after 25 years. She then worked at the Maid-rite diner for 10 years until she retired. She and Bob worked at Yellowstone National Park during the summers.

Miriam was a member of Peace Lutheran Church in West Burlington. She enjoyed quilting with the church ladies, baking, sewing, traveling, and hiking in the mountains with Bob. She was a member of AARP. She enjoyed the coffee group at Paneras, especially with her good friend Doris.

Survivors include two sons Dannie (Joyce) Francis of Wever, and Marc Francis of Burlington; eight grandchildren, Chad(Nicole) Francis of Canon City, Colorado, Daniele (Adam) Lakin of Monument, Colo., Tom Patterson of Burlington, Ben (Megan) Patterson of LeClaire, Kim (Nick) LaFauce of West Burlington, Caleb (Whitney) Titus of Burlington and Ryan Francis of Mason City; two step grandsons Joseph (Shea) Eddy of Grimes, and Jacob Eddy of Ames; many great grandchildren and one great-great grandson; one sister Margaret Triska of Salem, Iowa; two brothers Wayne (Mary) Elmore of Omaha, Neb. and Larry Elmore of Franklin, N.C.; one sister-in-law Martha Dooley of Freeport, Ill.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Bob, daughter Kathleen Titus and her husband Craig, son Kevin Francis, grandsons Trent Francis and Michael Menke; sisters Patsy Smith, Mary Lou Stewart, and Beverly Lyle; sister-in-law Martha Elmore; brothers-in-law Dick Triska, John Smith and Willie Stewart.

The memorial visitation will be held 4 to 6 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 14 at Lunning Chapel. Inurnment will be at Salem South Cemetery at a later date.

Barbara Jean Groeltz Kinneer of Fort Collins, Colo., was born Feb. 16, 1945, in Burlington, Iowa, to William Henry and Eleanor Emma Fahlgren Groeltz. She married Robert Gordon “Rob” Kinneer Oct. 28, 1967. She died Sept. 24, 2023, of cancer.

Barb graduated from Burlington High School, Western Illinois University, and the University of Iowa. She taught in the Burlington Community School District for nearly forty years where she helped develop outdoor classrooms.

She was involved in the BHS Ecology Club, Starr’s Cave Nature Center Board, Aspen Grove Cemetery Board, Three Rivers Environmental Council, The Rocky Mountain chapter of the Scleroderma Foundation, and Strong Women—Strong Bones. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and First United Methodist Church. She retired to Fort Collins where she became a Master Naturalist and 10-year volunteer.

Preceded in death by her parents and sister, Carolyn Groeltz Dalton, she is survived by her husband, Rob; children Kara (Eric Straumanis) and Christopher (Briana Sprecher); grandchildren, August and Iyla Straumanis, and Alister and Margaret (Maggie) Kinneer, all residing in Colorado; and a brother, William Groeltz.

Emily Ann Carkhuff died Oct. 8, 2023, at the age of 92 in Davenport.&nbsp; She passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones. Emily was born on March 22, 1931, to William &amp; Anna Vansice in Independence Township, Jasper County, Iowa. She grew up in Jasper County with her four brothers and two sisters. She later met and married Arthur Carkhuff on Dec. 28, 1948, in Marshalltown. Between 1949 and 1959 Art &amp; Emily had seven children, two sons and four daughters. She was known for her love of fishing, and playing cards, an avid book reader, morning breakfast with the girls at the old Holiday Inn in Burlington,&nbsp;Friday night&nbsp;date night with Art in Fort Madison at El Zarape’, and the multitude of ears she has nibbled through the years. Emily Ann Carkhuff touched the lives of many with her steadfastness in preaching the good news of God’s Kingdom as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses since her baptism in February 1965.&nbsp; Emily made it her aim to live the life of a God-fearing woman, and her life demonstrated her love of God and neighbor. She had a warm and generous heart, always willing to lend a helping hand and bring joy to those around her. Emily will be dearly missed by her sisters Janice &amp; Bette and brother James Vansice, her children Diana (Ronald) Eckburg, Eunice Carkhuff, "Betsy" Elizabeth Carkhuff, "Becky" Rebecca Carkhuff, "Arnie" Arnold Carkhuff, Nina Carkhuff, numerous grandchildren, and great-grandchildren who lovingly called her "GiGi".&nbsp; She is preceded in death by her parents William &amp; Anna Vansice, her brothers William, Kenneth, and Merrill, her first husband Art, her second husband James, her son “Bud” Arthur Carkhuff III, granddaughter Brandi Evans, and her grandson Aaron Eckburg. A memorial service will be held via Zoom, with a link to the Zoom webpage to be announced. Friends and family are invited to join us in remembering Emily and sharing their cherished memories. Private family interment was held at Greenwood Cemetery. Kody Barton, 32, of Burlington, formerly of Mount Pleasant, died Monday, Oct. 9, 2023, at his home.&nbsp;

Kody was born July 4, 1991, in Mount Pleasant, the son of Kevin and Gina Luko Barton. He graduated from Mount Pleasant High School in 2010. He worked various jobs with Hope Haven. Kody enjoyed anything to do with farming including driving tractors and combines, mowing, and tilling. He looked forward to long side by side rides with his dad while listening to country music. Kody carried a backpack with pictures, candy cigarettes, and beef jerky chew. He was known to offer up a friendly wave, an ornery laugh, and grin. Kody especially enjoyed teasing his nieces and nephews.&nbsp;

Kody is survived by his mother, Gina Rooks of Mount Pleasant; father, Kevin (Linda) Barton of Mount Pleasant; 5 sisters: Aimee (Eric) Sanderson of Hillsboro, Lisbeth (Vegas) Whaley of New London, Whitney (Jake) Falline of Mount Pleasant, Haley (Willy) Callaway of Stockport, Gracie Rooks of Mount Pleasant; thirteen nieces and nephews: Alexis, Silver, Lukus, Landon, Christian, Lane, Pru, Olivia, Isis, Norah, Kollyns, Oaklyn, Fallyn; and grandmothers: Shirley Luko of Mount Pleasant and Mary Detrick of Mount Pleasant. Kody Barton

Buddy A. Casey, 87, of Oquawka, died Friday, Oct. 6, 2023, at his home.

Born Oct. 13, 1935, in Bingham, Ill., he was the son of Levi Thomas and June Eileen Meyer Casey. On March 14, 1959, he married Carol Davis in Illinois.&nbsp;

He was a U.S. Navy Veteran, serving on the USS Nantahala.

Buddy worked as an ironworker for the Local 393 out of Chicago for many years. He later work as a carpenter.&nbsp;

Buddy was an avid reader. He also enjoyed playing chess and cards, especially with his friends on Thirsty Thursday. He loved his family and enjoyed the Casey Family Reunion.&nbsp;

Survivors include his wife, Carol Casey of Oquawka, Ill.; son, Denis (Eveliane) Casey of Oquawka, Ill.; four grandchildren, Denis Casey, Jr., Kenny (Gabby) Casey, Shelby (Charley), and Heaven (Malachi); &nbsp;five great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Wanda Casey of Oquawka and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers Joseph, Ronald, Larry, and Terry; two sisters Ramona (Richard) Wilson, and Gwen (Bill) Forrester.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh Crematory.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

Buddy A. Casey

Norman “Norm” Sayres, 96, of West Burington, died at the Klein Center in West Burlington. He was reunited with his wife, Frances, on Oct. 6, 2023, which would have been their 72nd wedding anniversary.

Born Sept. 18, 1927, in Knox County, Mo., he was the son of Audria Gilbert and Gertrude Carder Sayres.

Norm served in the United States Navy during WWII and was a Seaman 2nd Class.

He married Frances Wilkerson on Oct. 6, 1951, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. She died June 19, 2019.

Norm was a truck driver for Churchill Truck Lines for 25 years, retiring in 1989. He continued to stay active after retirement by delivering semi-tractors, hauling anhydrous tanks, and helping with the fall harvest. He shuttled cars for Shottenkirk until he was 88.

He was a member of the V.F.W. 7641 in New London.

Norm enjoyed watching the Iowa Hawkeyes, rodeos, and sprint car races. He also loved to hunt deer and coyote, mostly because that gave him the opportunity to spend time with his fellow hunters, as he loved to visit and share stories. For many years he went to Danville, on an almost daily basis, to drink coffee with the guys and then make a stop at the car lot.

His greatest joy was cheering on his grandchildren as they participated in sports and activities, and attended as many as he possibly could. He also enjoyed following the Soukup twins during their basketball career. He was a very proud grandfather and great-grandfather and was very excited to recently become a great-great-grandfather.

Survivors include one daughter Connie Wagner of West Burlington; one son Tim Sayres of New London; three granddaughters Heidi (Ted) Pallister of Wapello; Kari (Joel) Buck of Danville; and Erin Carson Hickman of Burlington; seven great-grandchildren Ashtin (Layne) Seager; Brentin Pallister; Madelyn, Parker, and Conner Buck; Brayton Carson and Elijah Cox; one great-great granddaughter Quinn Seager; one sister, Carolyn Samberg of Burlington, special friend and caregiver Mary Piper of New London, nieces and nephews.

The memorial service for Mr. Sayres will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 13, 2023, at Lunning Chapel with Pastor Dean Graber officiating. Inurnment will be in Long Creek Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the start of the service.

According to Norm’s wishes, cremation has been accorded and entrusted to the care of Lunning Chapel.

A memorial has been established for Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House.

Judy M. Bye, 76, of Mediapolis, formerly of Fort Madison, died Friday, Oct. 6, 2023, at the Azria Prairie Ridge and Rehabilitation Center in Mediapolis.

Born on July 29, 1947, in Fort Madison, at her grandmother’s home, she was the daughter of Joseph and Dollie Powell Rohmer. She married Larry Bye on Aug. 15, 1964. They later divorced.

Judy began her career as a carhop for A &amp; W in Fort Madison and later began working for Shaefer Pen Company for many years.

She was a member of the Santa Fe Methodist Church in Fort Madison.

Judy was a master seamstress, sewing almost all her own clothing. She enjoyed crafting and reading science fiction. She was proud to tell all about how she was an identical twin. Judy and her identical twin sister Jane would wear matching clothes well into their adulthood and would love to sing and dance together. She loved her family and time spent with them was of utmost importance to her.

Judy is survived by her two daughters; Lavonne (Rodney) Fogle of West Burlington and Leanne Krogmeier of Burlington; four grandchildren, Schylar Fogle, Jarod Fogle, Lauren Krogmeier, and Caleb Krogmeier; two great-grandchildren, Averi Dixon and Theodore Fogle; niece Joy (Jon) Bembenek, who was more like a daughter to her than a niece and two sisters, Dollie Mahalic of Burlington and Joelean (Winston) Harl of South Carolina.

She was preceded in death by her parents, daughter Jane Marie in infancy, and her identical twin sister Jane Rohmer.

The funeral service for Judy will be 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 10 at Lunning Chapel. Pastor Don Combs will officiate. Visitation will be held from 4 p.m. until the time of service on Tuesday at Lunning Chapel.

Inurnment will be held in Hillcrest Memorial Cemetery, Fort Madison, at a later date.

A memorial has been established for the Alzheimer’s Association.

Danny Lee Mitchell, Age 73, of West Burlington, died at his home surrounded by his family on Oct. 6, 2023.

Born February 4, 1950, in Macomb, Ill., he was the son of Charles and Darlyne Mitchell.&nbsp; On July 4, 1980, he married Sherry Lynn McPeak in Argyle State Park, Colchester, Ill.

Dan was a loan officer for Great Western Bank for 19 years, and had prior managerial positions with AVCO Financial for 26 years.&nbsp; Dan retired in 2019.

He was a member of West Burlington Christian Church.&nbsp; He always enjoyed being with family.&nbsp; Dan liked all sports, particularly the Hawkeyes and St. Louis Cardinals.&nbsp; He enjoyed Flea markets, garage sales, and auctions.&nbsp; He loved his dogs, Karlee and Ruby.&nbsp; His family always came first and pleasing them was a specialty of Dan. Dan was passionate about friends and neighbors and was there to help if needed.

Dan’s family includes his two sons, Landon Mitchell of Burlington and Brett Mitchell of West Burlington, and his daughter, Kalee Mitchell of Burlington; two sisters, Sharon (Larry) Stoneking of Blandinsville, Ill., and Kathy (Dennis) Little of Macomb, Ill.; and several nieces and nephews.&nbsp; He is preceded in death by his parents, and the everlasting love and joy of his life, Sherry, who died June 27, 2019.

Visitation will be from noon until 7 p.m. with family to receive guests from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 16 at Prugh Funeral Service (3940 Division Street, Burlington).&nbsp; A funeral service for Dan is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 17th, 11 a.m., also at Prugh Funeral Service.

Danny Lee Mitchell

E. Joan Trail, 91, of West Burlington, died Friday, Oct. 6, 2023, at the Oakview Care and Rehabilitation Center in Burlington.

Born Feb. 16, 1932, in Mount Pleasant, she was the daughter of Basil S. and Elsie Beavers.

She married Jack C. Trail on Oct. 19, 1952, in Burlington. He died April 1, 2013.

Joan worked for Northwestern Bell, and later as a crossing guard at Maple and Central Streets.

She was a wonderful mother to four children along with all of the neighborhood children. She was an avid collector of turtles, loved gardening and bird watching. She was a former member of the American Legion Auxiliary and a member of the “Turtle Club”.

She is survived by her three children; Terry (Teresa) Trail of Des Moines, Iowa, Jan (Milam Thomas) Trail of Grimes, Iowa and Marisa Trail of West Burlington; three grandchildren, Korey Trail, Ashley McAllister, and Dusty Trail and her Turtle, “Lightning” of 56 years, who is estimated to be 78 years old.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son William “Bill” Trail, and two brothers, Robert Beavers and Virgil Beavers.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date. According to her wishes, cremation has been entrusted to the care of Lunning Chapel.

Joan Trail, 91, of West Burlington, died Friday, Oct. 6, 2023, at the Oakview Care and Rehabilitation Center in Burlington.Born Feb. 16, 1932, in Mount Pleasant, she was the daughter of Basil S. and Elsie Beavers.She married Jack C. Trail on Oct. 19, 1952, in Burlington. He died April 1, 2013.Joan worked for Northwestern Bell, and later as a crossing guard at Maple and Central Streets.She was a wonderful mother to four children along with all of the neighborhood children. She was an avid collector of turtles, loved gardening and bird watching. Joyce Virginia Kephart, 82, of Burlington, died Wednesday, Oct. &nbsp;4, 2023, at Trinity Hospital in Rock Island, Ill.

Born July 5, 1941, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Albert and Beulah Huffman Sly.

Joyce was a graduate of Burlington High School class of 1959 and a graduate of Burlington College in 1961.

On April 21, 1962, she married William “Bill” Kephart. He died Sept. 7, 2011.

Joyce ran a daycare from the 1960s to the 1990s. She was the owner of Joyce’s Cakes. She was a cake decorator at Walmart.

She loved going on cruises with her sister. Children always brightened her day. She enjoyed Burlington Civic Music and Players Workshop. She was a member of Open Bible Church and was president of D.O.V.E (women’s group at the church).

Survivors include two sons William (Sunny) Kephart II of Houston, Texas and Barry (Kellye) Kephart of Carmine, Texas; one daughter Kathi (Brian) Michelson of West Burlington; 11 grandchildren Sierra (Tyler) Huggins, Savannah (Mitch) Banes, Cheyanna Jones, William Kephart III, Tiffany Kephart, Anastasia Kephart, Samantha Kephart, Jacob Kephart, Kinsey Michelson, Brock (Shan) Michelson, Bailye Salas; seven great-grandchildren Olivia, Natalie and Cameron Huggins, Leon and Ming Michelson, Leven Kephart and Myla Smith.

She was preceded in death by her husband Bill, daughter Kimberly and beloved brother Dicky.

The funeral service for Ms. Kephart will be 10:30 a.m. &nbsp;Monday, October 9 at Lunning Chapel. Visitation will be 4 to 6 Saturday, October 7 at Lunning Chapel. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.

Michelle Lynn “Shelley” Jarvis, 66, of Fort Madison, died Monday, Oct. 4, 2023, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born Oct. 24, 1956, in Chicago, Ill., she was the daughter of Clifford and Joann Carol Wilson. She married Toby Jarvis on Dec. 26, 1981, in Denmark, Iowa.

Shelley worked more recently in the Deli for the Fort Madison Hy-Vee grocery store. She was a certified EMT.

She was very crafty, loved her pets and harassing her family. She enjoyed listening to music and traveling to Missouri and Arizona with her husband. She was a warrior, who survived breast cancer TWICE in addition to being the recipient of a donor kidney.

She is survived by her husband, Toby Jarvis of Fort Madison; five children, Caroll Vernon Brewer III of Fort Madison, David Orlando Brewer of Burlington, Ronald Carl Brewer of Fort Madison, Toby Lee Jarvis II, and Stacey Lynn Jarvis both of Arkansas; 14 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two sisters Julie Reynolds and Dawn Barrett and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, and one sister.

The memorial funeral service for Shelley will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, October 11 at Lunning Chapel. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the memorial service.

A memorial has been established in Shelley’s memory for P.A.W.S. Animal Shelter in Fort Madison.

According to her wishes, cremation has been accorded and entrusted to the care of Lunning Chapel.

Michelle Lynn “Shelley” Jarvis

William &nbsp;L. “Bill” Luckenbill died peacefully at Hospice House on Oct. 2, 2023. &nbsp;In his final weeks, he was surrounded by family and friends, sharing memories and music with those he loved. &nbsp;He leaves behind a family that is heartbroken, yet he was clear in his love for his family, his faith, and his music.

Bill was born on Nov. 1, 1933 to Adrien and Edna Luckenbill near Mediapolis. &nbsp;He moved several times as a child and went to high school in New Boston, where he met the love of his life, Nettie Hilligoss. &nbsp;He graduated from DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana in 1955 where he studied piano and music education. &nbsp;He and Nettie were married that same year and he began his 40-year career teaching music in Joy, Illinois and Mediapolis.&nbsp;

Bill and Nettie raised six children in Mediapolis and they remain his greatest cheerleaders. &nbsp;Besides leading vocal and instrumental band, Bill managed the Mediapolis swimming pool for many years. &nbsp;He was a well-known and loved member of the community and felt incredibly fortunate to land in such a wonderful town to raise his family.

Traveling to visit family was a favorite activity for Bill and in addition, in his later years he traveled to the Mediterranean, Ireland, and Israel. &nbsp;He and Nettie loved to visit Branson, Mo., Disney World, take cruises, and go anywhere that their children were. &nbsp;He also loved caring for his yard and took great pride in his flowers.

Bill’s faith was important to him and he was organist and choir director at St. Mary’s Church in Dodgeville for over 50 years. &nbsp;When he moved to Burlington, he joined St. John’s Church and met many friends through the church activities. &nbsp;His strong faith brought him much comfort during his illness and the generous church members who brought him communion were a blessing to him.

Bill shared his musical talent in many ways, including directing the Silver Singers for a few years, creating his own garage band, and visiting senior centers, the hospital, and Hospice House to play the piano and lead sing-alongs. &nbsp;His greatest joy was singing with residents at his favorite Senior Centers. &nbsp;He entertained hospital visitors and employees three days a week by playing the grand piano in the lobby of the hospital. &nbsp;In fact, as he left the ICU and traveled to Hospice House, he was honored to find the hospital lobby filled with employees, who were waiting for one last sing-along. &nbsp;His family will always remember that day and are grateful for the support of his ICU and ER nurses and all who cared for him at that time.

Bill leaves behind his children, Roni Luckenbill (Claire Kubiak), Richard (Tammy) Luckenbill, Deb (Kirk) Thie, Lisa Luckenbill, Brenda (Marty) Gerst, and Patty Luckenbill and his many grandchildren and great grandchildren. &nbsp;He is also survived by his sister, Joan (Jerry) Fausett and many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and his beloved cat, Lucky. &nbsp;He was preceded in death by his wife, Nettie; parents; and sister, Patricia Graddis.

Bill’s family is grateful for his time at Hospice House, and especially for the caring staff. &nbsp;He found peace and comfort in his final weeks in this special place.

Visitation will be from noon until 8 p.m. with family to receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 13, 2023 at Prugh Funeral Service, 3940 Division Street.&nbsp;

A memorial Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated 10 am. Saturday, Oct. 14, 2023 at Divine Mercy Parish St. John the Baptist Catholic Church (700 Division St., Burlington), with burial at St Mary’s cemetery in Dodgeville following the luncheon.&nbsp;

Memorial contributions are suggested to Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House, Divine Mercy Parish, or St. Mary’s Church in Dodgeville.

William L. “Bill” Luckenbill

Richard Charles Bessine, 88, of Burlington, died Sunday, Oct. 1, 2023 at his home. 

He was born May 10, 1935 in Burlington to Frederick Sr. and Anna Koeller Bessine.&nbsp;&nbsp;On July 17, 1954 he married Betty Jean Sly in Burlington; she died Jan. 7, 2012.&nbsp;&nbsp;He attended Burlington schools and was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church in Burlington.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Mr. Bessine worked for fifty years as a Transportation Supervisor at IAAP in Middletown. He enjoyed hunting geese and ducks; trap shooting; boating the Mighty Mississippi; and spending time with his grandchildren.&nbsp;

Survivors include three daughters, Mary Moore and Cynthia Trammel of Austin, Texas, and Kristina Seals of Burlington; daughter-in-law Debbie Bessine of Florida; four grandchildren, Dustin Carlson, Ashley (Matt) Grinnell, Aric Martin and Anthony (Bethany) Martin; and eight great-grandchildren, Cayden, Carsen, Richard, Jada, Gavin, Rosie, Mattelyn, and Jaric.&nbsp;&nbsp;Besides his parents and his wife, he was preceded in death by his son Gene Patrick; grandson Rayme Moore; and brothers, Fred, Bob, Ed and Jim.

Keith married Letitia "Toots" Webber, in July 1956 at the Little Brown Church in the Vale. Funeral services will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 6,&nbsp;2023,&nbsp;at the Stockport United Methodist Church with Pastor Mary Kathryn Hart and Diane Bales officiating.&nbsp; Burial will be in the Spencer Cemetery immediately following the service.&nbsp; &nbsp;Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 5,&nbsp;2023,&nbsp;at the Cranston Family Funeral Home in Fairfield, with the family present to greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m.&nbsp; Memorial contributions in Keith's honor may be directed to EveryStep Hospice or to the Spencer Cemetery Association.&nbsp;

Born on March 9, 1935, in Stockport, Keith was a lifelong resident of the town, a testament to his love for the community and the farm life.&nbsp;&nbsp; He was born on a farm in rural Stockport, not far from where he would spend his entire life. His education began in Stockport, but his senior year took him to Fairfield High School. The reason? Shop class. Keith was a man who loved to work with his hands, and the opportunity to learn more about fabrication was too good to pass up.&nbsp; After high school, Keith married the love of his life, Letitia. Their journey together wasn't always smooth sailing, and they did part ways for a time.&nbsp;But&nbsp;their path in life would bring them back together&nbsp;and they&nbsp;would remain inseparable for the rest of their lives.&nbsp;Keith was a lifelong farmer and an expert fabricator. If it was broken, Keith could fix it. If it didn't exist, Keith could create it. He was also a member of the Stockport United Methodist Church and the Stockport Lions Club, contributing his time and talents to the community he loved. &nbsp;He was known for his love of making spiral staircases, a testament to his skill as a fabricator.&nbsp; He also had a knack for making people laugh. Whether it was a well-timed joke or a clever trick, he always knew how to brighten someone's day. One of Keith's favorite pastimes was his morning coffee group. Every morning, a group of friends would stop by his shop for a&nbsp;coffee&nbsp;and a chat.&nbsp;It was something that Keith always looked forward to.&nbsp; He was a man of many talents and a heart full of laughter. His love for his community, his skills as a fabricator, and his ability to bring a smile to anyone's face will be remembered by all who knew him. His passing leaves a void but his spirit will live on in the laughter he shared, the problems he solved, and the staircases he built.

Keith was preceded in death by his parents;&nbsp;his wife, Leticia Webber;&nbsp;three daughters, Karmen Webber, Karlene McPherson, and Karla Webber Moser and three siblings, Pauline Likes, Wayne&nbsp;Webber and Robert Webber.&nbsp;

Left to honor his memory are his children, Krista (Larry) Hartman of Burlington, and Keith&nbsp;Wesley Webber of Stockport; a stepson, Kerry Garmoe of Stockport; eight grandchildren, Adam, Justina, Nick, Jordan, Cort, Kaleb, Kyle, and Kollin; eight great grandchildren with one on the way, as well as many extended family and friends.

He was also a member of the Stockport United Methodist Church and the Stockport Lions Club, contributing his time and talents to the community he loved. &nbsp;He was known for his love of making spiral staircases, a testament to his skill as a fabricator.&nbsp; He also had a knack for making people laugh. Whether it was a well-timed joke or a clever trick, he always knew how to brighten someone's day. One of Keith's favorite pastimes was his morning coffee group. Every morning, a group of friends would stop by his shop for a&nbsp;coffee&nbsp;and a chat.&nbsp;It was something that Keith always looked forward to.&nbsp; He was a man of many talents and a heart full of laughter. His love for his community, his skills as a fabricator, and his ability to bring a smile to anyone's face will be remembered by all who knew him. His passing leaves a void but his spirit will live on in the laughter he shared, the problems he solved, and the staircases he built.Keith was preceded in death by his parents;&nbsp;his wife, Leticia Webber;&nbsp;three daughters, Karmen Webber, Karlene McPherson, and Karla Webber Moser and three siblings, Pauline Likes, Wayne&nbsp;Webber and Robert Webber.&nbsp;Left to honor his memory are his children, Krista (Larry) Hartman of Burlington, and Keith&nbsp;Wesley Webber of Stockport; a stepson, Kerry Garmoe of Stockport; eight grandchildren, Adam, Justina, Nick, Jordan, Cort, Kaleb, Kyle, and Kollin; eight great grandchildren with one on the way, as well as many extended family and friends.

Gregory James Boyles, 73, of Burlington, died Friday, Sept. 29, 2023, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in West Burlington. Born June 17, 1950, in Burlington, he was the son of James B. and Shirley Jean Rawson Boyles. On July 29, 1989, he married Janice M. Schwind in the front yard of their home here in Burlington.&nbsp; Greg graduated from Mediapolis High School in 1969 and following that graduated from Southeastern Community College.&nbsp; He owned and operated George's Lawn Mower for 20 years from 1986 until 2006. Greg never let being in a wheelchair stop him from living his life to the fullest. He was always busy doing something, whether it was fishing, mowing the yard or working on various projects in his garage. Greg even learned to drive himself around using a van that was modified with hand controls. He will be fondly remembered for his ability to fix anything, including but not limited to mowers, cars, or various other machines. Greg always made himself available to lend a helping hand and dearly loved spending time with his family. Survivors include wife of 34 years, Janice M. Boyles of Burlington; two daughters, Kenna (JR) Roth of Crawfordsville, and Tia (Nick Sherburne) Boyles of Hamilton, Ill.; three grandsons, Devlin Ramos and Bryce and Brantley Roth; two sisters, Gayle (Pat) Daly of Burlington and Linda (Jeff) Krieger of Fort Myers, Fla.; and many loving nieces, nephews and in-laws. He was preceded in death by his parents. Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh Crematory. &nbsp;Vicky Mehaffy, 68, of Mount Pleasant, died Friday, Sept. 29, 2023, at Savannah Heights in Mount Pleasant.&nbsp;

Vicky was born April 16, 1955, in Oakland, Calif., the daughter of Rodney and Darlene Alter &nbsp;Mehaffy.&nbsp; The Mehaffy family moved to Mount Pleasant when Vicky was young. She attended Lincoln Elementary and Hope Haven. Vicky enjoyed playing cards, games, BINGO, listening to books, coloring and making crafts. She also loved cowboy movies and TV shows. Vicky lived a wonderful life and was loved by many.&nbsp;

Vicky is survived by her sister and her husband Tammy and Doug Mulford of Mount Pleasant; brother-in-law Dan McCabe of Mount Pleasant; four nephews, Matthew McCabe, Michael McCabe, Jordan Mulford, Logan Mulford; aunt and uncle Beverly and Shorty Mullen of Mount Pleasant. She was preceded in death by her parents and sister Pam McCabe.&nbsp;

According to her wishes her body has been cremated and a private family inurnment will be held in the Forest Home Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to Hope Haven in Burlington. The Olson-Powell Chapel &amp; Crematory is caring for Vicky and her family.&nbsp;

Rickey Allan Bohnenkamp, 70, of Lomax, Ill. died Sept. 27, 2023. Born on March 16, 1953, in Keokuk, he was the son of George and May Bohnenkamp. Rickey was the youngest of five children. Rickey's first home was on a dairy farm near Argyle. The farm failed after the dairy herd had to be put down due to wasting disease. His family sold the dairy and moved West to California. His parents later divorced in 1957. During his youth, Rickey and his mother moved frequently, living as apartment dwellers, and he attended eight public schools before finally attending Brea-Olinda Unified High School, graduating in June 1971.&nbsp; Rickey started earning wages at nine years of age, doing yard work, collecting pop bottles, and washing cars for folks. His first actual paycheck came from TG&amp;Y Department Store in Fullerton, Calif. Rickey later worked his way through High School at Lucky Markets, first as a box boy, then later advanced as a journeyman produce clerk after completing his apprenticeship at age 18. Rickey worked a short period at Eagle Market, then was soon hired on at J.I. Case Company in Burlington. After working as a weldment cleaner for a year, Rickey enlisted in the U.S. Navy as a Hull Maintenance Technician. Rickey served on the USS Mobile and the USS Dixon during the Vietnam War. After completing a four-year hitch, he returned to work at J.I. Case Company. Rickey served as union Steward for the local UAW for several years. He became a journeyman millwright before retiring in 2003. He produced a video to help families that experience a head injury, titled WHAT HAPPENS NEXT. He did this due to the lack of information following his daughter Emily's head injury in a motor vehicle accident. Rickey taught himself and became a master craftsman at building strip canoes. Rickey collected guns and loved to target shoot. He would buy old guns, refurbish them, and resell them. Rickey's favorite activities included travel, motorcycling, mechanics, small boat building, and practical jokes. Rickey married Lori Ruberg on Friday, the 13th of June 1980. Since then, they have resided in Lomax and grew a family with their three daughters, Corina, Emily, and Elizabeth.&nbsp; Rickey was preceded in death by his mother, May Bohnenkamp, father, George Bohnenkamp, one sister, Sandra Henriksen, two brothers, Marc Bohnenkamp and Gary Bohnenkamp, Sr., and two daughters, Corina Bohnenkamp and Elizabeth Bohnenkamp. &nbsp; The funeral service for Rickey Allan Bohnenkamp will be on Friday, Oct. 6, 2023, at 10:30 a.m. at Prugh Funeral Service, 3940 Division Street, Burlington with the Rev. Rickey “Rick” L. Riley, 71, of Iowa City, died Sept. 25, 2023, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.

Born Feb. 13, 1952, in Keokuk, he was the son of Harold M. and E. Paulyne Riley. He was a 1970 graduate of Keokuk High School and earned his teaching degree at Central Missouri State University.

He married Mary Deiling on Aug. 19, 1972. She preceded him in death on April 26, 1994. He then married Cynthia Figgins on Sept. 27, 2003. She preceded him in death on Feb. 18, 2020.

Rick taught Drivers Education and Industrial Arts for Louisa-Muscatine High School for 27 years. In addition to his teaching career, he was in charge of Transportation for the school. Rick taught summer Drivers Education at New London High School. After retirement, he substitute taught at Lone Tree Schools and Highland School District.

He was an Iowa Hawkeyes fan and enjoyed time on the river and time spent at his cabin in Sandusky, Iowa.

Survivors include his three daughters; Heather Michelle Riley (Matt) of Iowa City, Melissa Ann Martin (Landon) of West Burlington, and Kimberly Renee Eland of Burlington; eight grandchildren, Drake Ells, Marly Ells, Courtney Roberts, Connor Roberts, Madisyn Martin, Grant Martin, Derrik Martin, and Zoe Eland; brother Michael Riley (Dr. Emily Gualtieri-Riley) of Grand Rapids, Mich., and three nephews, Nicholas, Joseph and Benjamin.

He was preceded in death by his parents and wife Mary and wife Cynthia.

The visitation for Mr. Riley will be 9 a.m. to Noon on Saturday, Sept. 30, 2023, at the Ralph J. Wittich -Riley-Freers Funeral Home, 1931 Houser St., Muscatine, Iowa. Per his wishes, cremation will occur following the visitation, and has been entrusted to the care of Lunning Chapel. A private family burial will be held on Sunday, Oct. 1 in Kossuth Cemetery, rural Mediapolis.

Survivors include her daughter Robin (Kevin) King, Petaluma Ca., and two brothers, Eugene (Larry) Baker, Burlington, and Joe (Becky) Baker of Olathe, Kan., and several nieces and nephews. Patricia loved animals, especially her cat Buddy. She had a special talent for decorating and creating flower arrangements for her church.&nbsp;Patricia will be loved and missed by all those who knew her.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of the Neptune Society.
