Thomas Warren Dowell, 63, of Burlington, died Friday, Aug. 25, 2023, at his residence.

Born Feb. 2, 1960, in Burlington, he was the son of Cleo Ben and Muriel Thomas Dowell. He married Juliann Curry. They later divorced.

Tom enjoyed doing yard work and growing plants, tinkering on cars and his Harley Davidson motorcycle. He was a very social person, and was loved by all who knew him. He was a kind man and loved the time he spent with his children and family.

He is survived by his four children; Jake Willits of Pensacola, Fla., Kandi Dowell and Kara Dowell both of Des Moines, and Adam Gulick of Burlington; six siblings, Thresa Snowden of Burlington, Roger Dowell of Lomax, Ill., Tanya Chewning of Kirkwood, Ill., Dawn Reverend of Burlington, Marsha Trout of Illinois and Christina McLaury of Mobile, Ala.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Richard Dowell, Randall Dowell and Benny Dowell, one sister, Joan Gerling and half-sister Linda Porter.

A celebration of life with a luncheon to follow on Saturday, Sept. 9 at Union Baptist FGF, 200 Central Street, Burlington. All friends and family are invited. Burial will be in Stronghurst Cemetery, Stronghurst, Ill. at a later date.

Cremation has been accorded and entrusted to the care of Lunning Chapel.

Thomas Ray Lankford, 78, died Sunday, Sept. 3, 2023, at Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in West Burlington.

Born Sept. 11, 1944, he was the son of Inez Tisor Lankford, and Chelza Ted Lankford.

He was a 1963 graduate of BHS. In Aug. 1965, he married Terry Wakeford. They later divorced. In June 1986, he married, Shirley Anliker Kirby. He worked for Murray Iron Works as an assemblyman and road man from 1964 until his retirement in 2011.

He loved the river; fast boats; fishing and trapshooting. He was of the Christian faith.

He is survived by his wife Shirley of 37 years, one son Robert T. Lankford of Sarasota, Fla., one stepson Larry (Lisa) Kirby of Burlington, one sister, Marilyn (Susie) Timmerman of Burlington, three grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister Darlene Waring and two brothers-in-law.

Per his request, his body has been deeded to the University of Iowa, and there will be no services.

Kevin Wayne Springsteen

Kelly Edward Walgren, 65, of Wapello, died peacefully at the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics surrounded by his family on Sept. 2, 2023, after a battle with cancer.

He fought the disease to the very end with an amazing attitude, positive outlook, and incredible

strength and stamina after dozens of chemotherapy and radiation treatments. He never complained and made the best out of his situation, even taking a trip to visit his cousin Ron in Hawaii in September of 2022.

Kelly was born in Mount Pleasant, Iowa, on Oct. 16, 1957, to Mary Ellen and Stanley Walgren. He lived his early life in New London and moved to Wapello when he was in high school.&nbsp;

As a kid, he was a daredevil. He could do a 1½ dive with a full twist from the high dive; he liked to ride motorcycles; and he still holds the Wapello school record in the pole vault.&nbsp;

As a man, Kelly was an outdoorsman. He loved fishing in his grandfather’s boat or hunting for rocks or mushrooms. He was hardworking, a jack-of-all-trades, and there was nothing he couldn’t fix. He had a big heart who liked to help people. With all that energy, it’s no wonder he could take a nap anytime and anywhere!&nbsp;

He worked at Monsanto for over 20 years and later for Ecklund and Pforts Construction and Allworth Contracting.

Kelly was a dedicated family man who loved his daughters, Abbey and Lacey, his grandchildren, and all his family. Taken from us too soon and already missing him are his daughters, Abigail Walgren of Morning Sun and Lacey (Anthony) Newsom of Oakville; mother, Mary Ellen of Wapello; brothers Tom (Shawn) of Muscatine and Tim (Michelle) of Quincy, IL; grandchildren AJ, Jaxon, Grace, and Tailinn Newsom; and nieces and nephews Jordan (Mark) Meyer, Alexandra (Luke) Rauenbuehler, Ryan (Lauren) Walgren, and Mitchell Walgren.&nbsp;

He was preceded in death by his maternal and paternal grandparents and his father, Stanley.

A celebration of life in Kelly’s honor will be held on Saturday, Sept. 9, 2023, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Wapello United Methodist Church at 319 N. Main St., Wapello, Iowa. A short ceremony will be held and food and refreshments will be served.&nbsp;

Bernice Julian Smith, 97, of Burlington, died Wednesday, Aug. 30, 2023, at the OakView Nursing Home and Rehabilitation in Burlington.

Born Oct. 14, 1925, in Warsaw, Ill, she was the daughter of Henry A. and Mary J. Glass Wenzel. On Jan. 26, 1952, she married Levi Ray Smith in Keokuk. He later died Sept. 26, 1996.

Bernice graduated from Warsaw High School.

Bernice worked at St Francis Care Center as a nurse aid for 29 years, retiring in 1988. She walked to and from work each day, no matter the weather.

She loved to be outdoors; either working in her yard or gardens or going for her daily walks around town. &nbsp;She enjoyed crossword puzzles and dancing. Bernice will be remembered for being a kind and giving person.&nbsp;

Survivors include her children, Debbie (Ronald) Freitag, Jerry (Marda) Smith and Raymond Smith all of Burlington; five grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.&nbsp;

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters Rita Wenzel, Annamae Gibson, Kathryn Haas. two brothers Henry Wenzel, Joseph Wenzel and two grandsons Aaron Freitag and Eli Smith.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m.until 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2023 at Prugh Funeral Service 3940 Division Street location.

Malcolm Ira Powers, 76, of Iowa City, formerly of Danville, died March 19, 2023 at University Hospital, Iowa City.

Malcolm was born Feb. 16, 1947 and graduated Danville High School 1966. He retired from Iowa City Transit after 30 years. He is survived by brother Guy and son Aaron.

His cremains will be buried on the Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate reservation in South Dakota at a later date.

Desmond Lee Kulp Jr., 87, of Fort Madison, died Saturday, Aug. 26, 2023, at the Birkwood Village of Fort Madison.

Born June 18, 1936, in Columbus City, he was the son of Desmond Lee Sr. and Marion Clyde Hanft Kulp. He married Mary “Tudy” Breuer on Nov. 26, 1960. They later divorced.

Desmond served in the Marine Corps from 1953-1955. He owned and operated Lee’s Equipment Repair for many years and then worked for Hertz Crane Rental. After his retirement, he managed a storage facility in Kemah, Texas.

He was an avid reader. After his retirement, he enjoyed sailing all throughout the Caribbean and Aruba. He was an experienced diver and loved underwater photography.

He is survived by his daughter, Kristina Bernhardt of Fort Madison; granddaughter Tabitha Nuss of Des Moines, and sister Judy Bloyd of Waterloo.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one son Jeff Kulp and one sister Jeanine Storks.

Visitation will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 31 at Lunning Chapel where the family will receive friends. Burial will follow the visitation at Aspen Grove Cemetery.

A memorial has been established for the P.A.W.S. animal shelter of Fort Madison.

Richard Franklin Wasson, 73, died Friday, Aug. 11, 2023, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in West Burlington.

Born Aug. 9, 1950, in Burlington, he was the son of John Robert and Betsy Ross Turnbough Wasson.&nbsp;

He was a graduate of West Burlington High School. &nbsp;

He was a U.S. Army Veteran, serving during the Vietnam War.

Buddy worked for Burlington Northern Railroad in the West Burlington Shops. He also worked for Excide for many years.&nbsp;

Buddy was extremely artistic. He enjoyed painting and was an excellent wood carver. He also enjoyed spending time outdoors; hunting, mushroom hunting or working on his guns.&nbsp;

Survivors include his wife, Donna Wasson of West Point; three children, Amanda Parker of West Burlington, Holly Wasson of Tenn., and Jon Wasson of Ken.; one grandchild; two sisters, Noreen "Rennie" Wasson of Burlington, and Lucretia "Lou" (Donald) Broeg of West Burlington; sister-in-law, Sandy Wasson of Burlington; one niece and three nephews and close friend, Deb Olsen of Burlington.

He is preceded in death by his parents, son, James Wasson, sister, Nancy Wasson and brothers, John "Bo" Wasson Jr. and Stephen Wasson.

Richard Franklin Wasson

She was born in Washington, Iowa on March 31, 1938 to Keith and Nina Morgan Keeler.

Pat married Thomas R. Falls on May 17, 1958 at St. Joseph Catholic Church. He preceded her in death on Nov 17, 2020.&nbsp; Pat grew up in Lone Tree and graduated in 1955. She participated in girls basketball, cheerleading, and glee club.&nbsp; After graduating, she worked at the University of Iowa Hospital in the pediatric burn unit. Tom and Pat moved to Fort Madison, then to West Burlington, where they resided until Tom’s retirement from the Iowa State Patrol.&nbsp; While in West Burlington, Pat was vice president of PTA, nominated for Outstanding Women, involved in the booster club, co leader of Girl Scouts, and volunteered at St. Timothy’s Catholic School. She went door to door getting signatures for the West Burlington swimming pool in our town. She diligently campaigned for Senator Jim Leach and Governor Robert Ray. She was always volunteering to make things better in the community. Pat worked at Burlington Medical Center in admitting until her move to Ariz. In Arizona she worked for&nbsp;Desert Samaritan Hospital in Mesa, Ariz. until her retirement. Pat had friends from all walks of life, always ready for travel with her coworkers, going to concerts and Colorado adventures. While living in West Burlington she befriended a wonderful archeologist couple that asked Pat to deliver a dinosaur bone to the University of Colorado. She loved helping her friend and jumped at the chance to visit her favorite place, Colorado.&nbsp; Pat loved a great card game (very competitive), watching collegiate or professional basketball (boys), traveling, music, luncheons and attending all of her grandchildren’s activities over the years. She attended St. Mary’s Catholic Church in West Burlington and St. Timothy’s in Mesa, Ariz. &nbsp;

Pat is survived by her sister, Jeannie Frank of Riverside; sister-in-law, Nancy Pagnucco of Stillwater, Minn., and Eileen Falls of Iowa City.

 </figure>Patricia Ann Falls died July 30, 2023.She was born in Washington, Iowa on March 31, 1938 to Keith and Nina Morgan Keeler.Pat married Thomas R. Falls on May 17, 1958 at St. Joseph Catholic Church. He preceded her in death on Nov 17, 2020.&nbsp; Pat grew up in Lone Tree and graduated in 1955. She participated in girls basketball, cheerleading, and glee club.&nbsp; After graduating, she worked at the University of Iowa Hospital in the pediatric burn unit. Tom and Pat moved to Fort Madison, then to West Burlington, where they resided until Tom’s retirement from the Iowa State Patrol.&nbsp; While in West Burlington, Pat was vice president of PTA, nominated for Outstanding Women, involved in the booster club, co leader of Girl Scouts, and volunteered at St. Timothy’s Catholic School. She went door to door getting signatures for the West Burlington swimming pool in our town. She diligently campaigned for Senator Jim Leach and Governor Robert Ray. She was always volunteering to make things better in the community. Pat worked at Burlington Medical Center in admitting until her move to Ariz. In Arizona she worked for&nbsp;Desert Samaritan Hospital in Mesa, Ariz. until her retirement. Pat had friends from all walks of life, always ready for travel with her coworkers, going to concerts and Colorado adventures. While living in West Burlington she befriended a wonderful archeologist couple that asked Pat to deliver a dinosaur bone to the University of Colorado. She loved helping her friend and jumped at the chance to visit her favorite place, Colorado.&nbsp; Pat loved a great card game (very competitive), watching collegiate or professional basketball (boys), traveling, music, luncheons and attending all of her grandchildren’s activities over the years. Terry Stephenson, 73, of Burlington, died Thursday, Aug. 17, 2023.Terry was born Aug. 27, 1949, the son of Ila Stephenson Miller and Gerald Miller.

Terry was a dedicated and hard worker. &nbsp;He worked a number of positions throughout his life, starting with the Heil Ice Company, then a number of years as a grounds man at Aspen Grove Cemetery, and finally working at Walmart. &nbsp;He would mow his neighbors' yards for extra money. &nbsp;Terry loved cars as well, and would spend a lot of time thinking about which one he would like to buy next. &nbsp;Terry also loved his dogs and spending time with his family.&nbsp;

His survivors include his siblings, Ila Jacobs, Diana Thompson, Jerry Miller, Mary Stewart, and Bradley Miller; several nieces and nephews, and several great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his mom and step-dad, Ila and Gerald; and sister, Lisa Miller.

A simple cremation has been arranged through Prugh Funeral Services in accordance with his wishes. &nbsp;

Memorials can be made to the Des Moines County Humane Society.

Terry Stephenson

Catherine Jean Anderson, 85, of Burlington, died Monday, Aug. 21, 2023 at Bickford Cottage.

Born July 28, 1938, in Rosetta, Ill., she was the daughter of Harry Edward and Florence Lillian Goff Alecock.

Jean graduated from Biggsville High School. On Oct. 15, 1960, she married Eugene Richard Anderson at the Rosetta Baptist Church. He died Oct. 18, 2020.

Jean was a production worker at General Electric for 34 years. She was a member of First Christian Church Disciples of Christ. She enjoyed playing bingo, gardening, and taking care of family and friends.

Survivors include one daughter Nancy (Amy Wesley) Anderson of Denver, Colo.; one son Eric Anderson of Burlington; four grandchildren Lauren (Kelton) Gourley of Burlington, Lucas Anderson of Iowa City, Logan Kelley, and Lyndsey Kelley both of West Burlington; three sisters Betty Brown of Monmouth, Ill., Maida Johnson of Biggsville and Sandy Cox of LaHarpe, Ill.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, four brothers, and five sisters.

The funeral service will be 2 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 23 at Lunning Chapel with Dean Graber officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

Per her wishes, cremation will be accorded and entrusted to the care of Lunning Chapel.

A memorial has been established for Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice.

Esther Morse, 92, of Fort Madison, fell into the arms of God on Saturday, Aug. 19, 2023.&nbsp; She was born Sept. 20, 1930, in Brighton, Colo., a daughter of John and Mary Bitter Ells.&nbsp; On May 6, 1952, she married Charlie Martin Morse at Fort Madison.&nbsp; He preceded her in death May 30, 2015.

She was a homemaker.&nbsp; For 25 years, she worked as a nurse's aide at the former Fort Madison Community Hospital.&nbsp; She enjoyed gardening, embroidery, sewing, and traveling.&nbsp; She was a member of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church.

Esther was a loving mother and grandmother.&nbsp; She is survived by her six children; Charlotte Fraise, of North Dakota; Rebecca (Ronald Jr.) Leffler, Tennessee;&nbsp; Linda King (Bruce Scott), of Georgia; Steven (Esther) Morse, of Panama; Rose (Bruce) Bohnenkamp, of Iowa; and Sheila Morse, Colorado; 10 grandchildren; Spencer Fraise, Adam Fraise, Ronald Leffler III, Heather Leffler, Barry King II, Benjamin King, Joey Morse, Jennie Inger, Emily McPeak, and Alexander Bohnenkamp; many great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter.&nbsp; She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, five brothers, four sisters, one granddaughter Melissa Leffler, and one daughter-in-law Julie Morse.

Deloris Jackson, 72, of Mt. Pleasant, formerly of Danville, died Friday, August 18, 2023, at Savannah Heights in Mt. Pleasant.

Born Jan. 6, 1951, in Creston, Iowa she was the daughter of Dean and Doris Longfellow Gillette. She was a member of Yarmouth Baptist Church.

Deloris graduated from West High School in Davenport. She married Richard Jackson. They later divorced.

She was primarily a homemaker and also worked at Motorola. She retired from Community Bank in Wapello.

Most important to Deloris were her children, grandchildren, family, and friends.

Survivors include her children, Kim Hauswirth of Danville, Jason (Lonetta) Jackson of Danville, and Kristi (Levi) Palmer of Mediapolis; daughter-in-law Christy Jackson of Danville; grandchildren Baylee, Macy, Wyatt Jackson, Kylene Hauswirth, Kolton, Kody, Kelsey, Kaleb Jackson, Brantly and Tyler Palmer, Kenzie Langan, and Ayden Doyle; great-grandchildren Weston Jackson and Oakley Shoemaker; brothers Dale (Joanna) Gillette of Bettendorf, Jon Gillette of Davenport and Jamie (Tammy) Gillette of Maryville, Tennessee, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and son Troy Jackson.

Richard Lyle “Bear” Renshaw, 71, of Burlington, died Friday, Aug. 18, 2023, at his home.

Born Nov. 29, 1951, in Burlington, he was the son of Melvin Lyle “Bear” and Marybell Seymour Renshaw. He married Rita Lynn Rea June 30, 1972, at the Aldersgate Chapel in Burlington. He was of the Christian faith.

Richard worked for Champion Spark Plug for 15 years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and guns. He was a woodworker and a family man.

Survivors include his wife Rita of Burlington; one son Ryan Renshaw; one daughter Renee Renshaw both of Burlington; one granddaughter Hallie Renshaw and one grandson Mason McAllister; one sister Debra Graham of Wapello.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother Danny Renshaw, and several aunts and uncles.

Per his wishes, cremation has been entrusted and accorded to the care of Lunning Chapel. There will be no services at this time.

Deborah Christine Payne, 72, died Friday, Aug. 11, 2023, at Southeast Iowa Home Health &amp; Hospice, West Burlington, after a battle with cancer and dementia.

Deb was born a fiery redhead Dec. 28, 1950, in rural Hennepin County, Minn., where she grew up on a dairy cow farm, to Madelyn Beatrice Kevitt Rosendahl and Robert William Rosendahl II. She leaves behind two siblings, who she was very close to and loved dearly, Renee Carr of Arizona, and Robert "Bob" Rosendahl of Oklahoma.

Deb married her soul mate, David Anthony "Tony" Payne II, on June 15, 1970, in King, Wash. The two met while living in Seattle, where Tony was stationed during his time in the U.S. Navy. After marrying, they moved to Tony’s hometown of Ottumwa where they built a beautiful life together while Tony worked 40 years with USPS.

After his retirement, they traveled and settled down in Oklahoma. They loved scenic routes, small antique shops and being on the road, and most of all, each other. They are reunited together in Heaven, after Tony’s passing Feb. 8, 2013, where I’m sure he was waiting for his “Little Debbie Cakes” with arms wide open.

Deb was a homemaker who fiercely loved her family, enjoyed spending time in her beautiful garden, swimming, interior decorating, and a good mystery novel. Her husband and her son were her world and she loved spending summers with her son, David Anthony Payne III, his wife, Kellie Lynn Payne, and her only grandchild, Lindzie Ashlyn Payne at her home on Lake Eufaula. She loved being a grandmother, and preferred to be lovingly referred to as “Mammy.” She lived long enough to become a great-grandmother to a set of twins, Stella and Milo, who she absolutely adored. She leaves a void in the lives of those she leaves behind and her loud laughter, big smile, generosity, and charm will not easily be forgotten.

Cremation will be handled by Iowa Cremation Society of Cedar Rapids. A small ceremony will be held with just close family at their rural property.

Jeannie Kuster

Carolyn Kacena, beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away Aug. 16, 2023. Born on a farm in Riverside, on Nov. 30, 1932, Carolyn was the third of the four children of Ray and Mildred Means Marner. The family moved to a farm outside of Iowa City, where Carolyn’s education began in a one-room schoolhouse for grades one through eight.

Carolyn, at the age of 14, went to live and work at the home of Dr. Lew and Mrs. Eliose January in order to attend Iowa City High School. After graduating from high school in 1950, she continued her education at the University of Iowa where she received, in 1954, her BSN. Carolyn started her nursing career at the University of Iowa and years later she was proud to participate in the pinning ceremonies of two of her granddaughters who also obtained nursing degrees.

On Sept. 18, 1954, Carolyn married James Lee Kacena. The couple were married for 53 years until Jim’s death in 2008. Together they had five children. With the purchase of a John Deere dealership near Mediapolis, the family moved to Burlington in 1974 where Carolyn worked in the family business. After selling their dealership Carolyn remained active with other business ventures.&nbsp;

Upon her semi-retirement, she found time to join organizations that reflect her interest in women's and girls' advancement through education and training, the arts, reading, and music. She hit it hard joining T.T.T., Questers, PEO-Chapter NI, Soroptimist, League of Women Voters, Foster Care Review Board, Friends of the Library, and the Southeast Iowa Symphony.&nbsp;

Carolyn relished practicing yoga and going on quests to find Flow Blue China and flower frogs. One of her greatest pleasures was playing Bridge and she was killer at it! She was a voracious reader and influenced her five children and husband to all relish a good book. Her enjoyment of travel helped fulfill her sense of adventure and curious spirit.

Grandchildren spent many cherished days at Jim and Carolyns’ home in the country. Playing in the woods, riding bikes on the gravel roads, fishing, swimming, and having tea parties. Spending time with Grandma also meant many trips to the public library, Starr’s Cave, and other educational field trips. Grandma credited her yoga practice with enabling her participation in family paintball games and doing some cave crawling.

Carolyn will be greatly missed by her family: David(Sandy) Kacena of Iowa City, IA; Christopher(Shawn) Kacena of North Little Rock, AR; Kathryn (Lorry) Lazenby of Joplin, MO; Cynthia(C. Lynn) Cavett of Macomb, IL; and Jennifer (Randy) Frice of Burlington. Grandchildren: Amy (Chad) Bollinger; Ashton Kacena; Abby Kacena (Randy Flint); Cameron(Haley) Kacena; Jacob Kacena; Nicholas Kacena of; Hannah Neenan; John (Alena)Lazenby; Rachel (Patrick)Brennan; Max Cavett (Annelise Tarnowski); and Jack(Caitlin) Cavett; one stepson, Blake (Amanda) Shadell and twelve great-grandchildren with one on the way.&nbsp; Survivors also include three sister-in-laws: Carol Marner, Betty Kacena, and Karen Diltz and one brother-in-law, Richard Emmert, and many nieces and nephews.

Born on a farm in Riverside, on Nov. 30, 1932, Carolyn was the third of the four children of Ray and Mildred Means Marner. The family moved to a farm outside of Iowa City, where Carolyn’s education began in a one-room schoolhouse for grades one through eight.Carolyn, at the age of 14, went to live and work at the home of Dr. Lew and Mrs. Eliose January in order to attend Iowa City High School. After graduating from high school in 1950, she continued her education at the University of Iowa where she received, in 1954, her BSN. Carolyn started her nursing career at the University of Iowa and years later she was proud to participate in the pinning ceremonies of two of her granddaughters who also obtained nursing degrees.On Sept. 18, 1954, Carolyn married James Lee Kacena. The couple were married for 53 years until Jim’s death in 2008. Together they had five children. With the purchase of a John Deere dealership near Mediapolis, the family moved to Burlington in 1974 where Carolyn worked in the family business. Thomas "Tom" Roy Birkenstock, 79, of Burlington, died Tuesday, Aug. 15, 2023, at the Azria Health Prairie Ridge in Mediapolis.

Born July 16, 1944, in Burlington, he was the son of Roy George and Marjorie Maude Holsteen Birkenstock. On Feb. 26, 1966, he married Sue Ellen Maupin in Dodgeville.&nbsp;

He graduated from Iowa State University with a bachelor's degree in animal science in 1966. Tom spent his lifetime working as a farmer and he was always "Outstanding in his field".

He was a U.S. National Guard Veteran, serving for six years.

He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church of Dodgeville, where he served on the church council for many years, taught Sunday School, and was a pre-marital sponsor. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed golfing, woodworking, hunting, fishing, and traveling. He was a fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes, Green Bay Packers, and the St. Louis Cardinals. He loved spending time with his grandchildren. Tom especially enjoyed attending their events and vacationing with them. He had a very outgoing personality, was always very generous, and never knew a stranger.&nbsp;

Survivors include wife, Sue Ellen Birkenstock of Burlington;&nbsp; one daughter, Anne Marie (Brian) Abel of Yarmouth; two sons, Joseph Jeffrey (Shawn) Birkenstock of Burlington and Brian Thomas (Veronica) Birkenstock of Frisco, Texas; seven grandchildren, Lindsey, Josh, Kasey, Blake, Brianna, Andrew and Lauren; seven great-grandchildren, Jake, Mateo, Tomas, Sela, Kenna, Jess and Henry and many bonus grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Jack, Daniel, and Richard.

Geneva Verne Loyd Stewart, 85, of Burlington, died Tuesday, Aug. 15, 2023, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in West Burlington.

Born Feb. 17, 1938, in Gladstone, Ill., she was the daughter of Edward Wesley and Helen Verne Hunter Huss. She married Louis William Loyd in 1957. He preceded her in death in October 1978. On May 8, 1998, she married Lloyd Jack Stewart at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. He died June 10, 2017.

She attended Gladstone High School.&nbsp;

She worked at Antenna Craft for 16 years, as well as Heatilator for eight and a half years and Leopold's for eight and a half years before retirement.&nbsp;&nbsp;

She was a member of the Nazarene Church. She enjoyed dancing, playing pool, BINGO, attending family reunions and loved going to the casino.&nbsp;

Survivors include her daughter, Sue Ann Loyd (Ed Murphy) of Burlington; grandson, David Lee Loyd of Burlington; granddaughter, Candy Lynn Loyd of Burlington; great-grandchildren, Jacob, Matthew, Chianne, and Kathryn; brother, Edward Wesley of Burlington; and many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, both husbands, five brothers, five sisters, one grandson and several nieces and nephews.&nbsp;

Kenneth Haley Jr., 79, of Gladstone, Ill., died Aug. 8, 2023, in a side-by-side accident.

Born May 26, 1944, in Burlington, he was the son of Kenneth Sr. and Dorothy Mauthe Haley. He married Rita D. Zachmeyer on Sept. 14, 1962. He retired from his own business, Ken Haley Trucking and he worked for several other trucking businesses along with running heavy equipment.

He loved to work which was his hobby as well.

He played basketball and softball. He loved snowmobiling, motorcycle riding, camping, and spending time with his family, extended family, grandkids, and great-grandkids.

Kenny and Rita celebrated 56 years of marriage. They traveled extensively together taking wonderful trips over the years such as snowmobiling trips to Wisconsin, several motorcycle trips, Graceland and the Grand Ole Opry, California, Washington, Silver Dollar City in Branson, Mo., Nevada, and spent their 25th anniversary in Hawaii.

Survivors include his two daughters; Robin (Larry) South and Kathy (Jeff) Foley; five grandchildren, Bryan, Nichole, Keven, Joe, and Rebecca; nine great-grandchildren Isabella, Logan, Jesse, Victor, Ezra, Haley, Conor, Alex and Emma; and two brothers Jack Haley and Gary Haley.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.

The service for Mr. Haley will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 19 at Lunning Chapel where family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.

Memorials have been established for Burlington Fire Department and Burlington MedForce for the excellent care and compassion they displayed during the family’s time of need.

Darrell Dwayne Fenton Jr., 64, of Peyton, Colo., died Aug.10, 2023. Darrell was born on May 25, 1959, to Darrell "Red" Dwayne Fenton Sr. and Judy Ann Fenton in Burlington.

Darrell went to Mediapolis Iowa High School and graduated in 1977. He went on to start his own business, Fenton Contracting, which he proudly ran for 33 years.

Darrell married the love of his life, Susan Koval, on Oct. 17, 1981, in Burlington.

Darrell loved hunting, fishing, boating, camping, and tinkering in his garage. If it was broken, he could fix it. He also enjoyed spending time with his family.

Darrell is preceded in death by his father, Darrell "Red" Dwayne Fenton Sr., brother, Bradley Dwight Fenton, and nephew, Christopher Martin Fenton.

He is Survived by Susan Marie Koval; mother, Judy Ann Fenton; son, BranDen Christopher Koval (Lupe); daughter, Jacsmin Marie Koval (Josh); brother, Marty Christopher Fenton, and grandchildren, Anthony James Koval, Colton Alexander Koval, Donnie Red Koval, and Landon Michael Fluegel.

A celebration of life will be held on Sept. 23 from 12 to 4 p.m. at Jim's Neighborhood Lounge in Colorado Springs.

Randy Lee Stewart, 70, of La Harpe, Ill., died Thursday, Aug. 10, 2023, at VA Central Iowa in Des Moines.

Born June 18, 1953, in Peoria, Ill., he was the son of Donald Lee and Florence Jesse Wayland Stewart. On Sept. 28, 1985, he married Debra Sue Heuer. They later divorced, but they remained great friends.

Burial with Military Rites presented by the LaHarpe American Legion will follow in LaHarpe Cemetery.&nbsp;In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established for the VA Cental Iowa or a charity of the donor's choice.
