Sally Ann Burhop, 80, died Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2023, in her home.

Born Dec. 6, 1942, in Hedrick, she was the daughter of Howard and Betty Reinier Rickey. She married her soulmate Richard Burhop on June 24, 1960, at the First Baptist Church in Muscatine. They were separated only in death when he died Sept. 28, 2021.

Sally owned and operated Dick’s Kerr-McGee gas station, in Muscatine, along with her husband Dick for many years. More recently she worked as a receptionist for Deery Brothers and Autumn Heights.

She was a long-time member of First Baptist Church in Muscatine.

Her husband and children were everything to her. After her children all left the nest, her grandchildren and great grandchildren became the light of her life. Everything revolved around family.

Her family, grandchildren and faith were her life. She loved being outside on the back patio watching the horses and chickens and took great joy in watching her great grandchildren play.

She is survived by her three children; Adam Burhop of Kirksville, Mo., Andy (Diana Bragg) Burhop of Burlington and Amy (Robert) Adams of Aledo, Ill.; eight grandchildren, Cody Adams, Karla Adams, Clint Richers, Samantha Richers, Christian Adams, Heidi Burhop, Jody Burhop and Betsy Tubandt; eleven great grandchildren, with one on the way; three brothers, Charles Rickey and Tony (Janet) Rickey both of Muscatine, and Dean (Brenda) Rickey of Columbus Junction; one sister Cindy (Paul) Tillie of Wapello; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Dick, Sister Ruth Elane and sister-in-law Kathy Rickey.

The funeral service for Mrs. Burhop will be 11 a.m. Friday, August 11 at the High Prairie Methodist Church in Muscatine with Pastor Gary Kahler officiating. Visitation with family will be held one hour prior to the funeral service. Burial will be in the High Prairie Methodist Church Cemetery, Muscatine.

Florence Katherine Bolander, 79, of Burlington, died Monday, Aug. 7, 2023, at Addington Place in Burlington.

Born Dec. 15, 1943, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Ray and Vennessa Kimbrough Penrod. On July 21, 1962, she married Paul Melvin Bolander at the Spring Grove Methodist Church in Des Moines County.&nbsp;

She graduated from Burlington High School.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Florence was a homemaker and worked part time at Hy Vee for over 20 years.

Florence liked to play BINGO, go shopping, and listen to George Strait. She traveled all over the world with her husband, including one especially memorable seven country tour. She always said he'd take her wherever she wanted to go. Florence was a great cook and loved to spend time with her grandchildren. Her family was everything to her.&nbsp;

Survivors include her husband, Paul of Burlington; daughters, Deb Smutzer, Julie (Henry) Harris, and Tina (Chris) Lamb all of Burlington; sons, Tim (Paula) Bolander of Burlington and Bradley (Mandy) Bolander of Oswego, Ill.; 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; sisters, Elsie Stafford and Barb (Gary) Glendenning both of Burlington; brothers, Floyd (Patty) Penrod and Dick Penrod both of Burlington; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Viola (Denny) Patton and Georgianna (Jim) Vantiger; one son-in-law, Greg Smutzer; and two brothers-in-law, Ronald Stafford and Harry Bolander.&nbsp;

Visitation will be from noon until 7 p.m. with the family to receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 10, 2023, at Prugh Funeral Service, 3940 Division Street.&nbsp;

The funeral service for Mrs. Bolander will be at 2 p.m., Friday, Aug. 11, 2023 at Prugh Funeral Service. Burial will be in Carman Cemetery.

A memorial has been established for the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House.&nbsp;

Darlene “Dar” Moffett, 76, of Salem, died Monday, Aug. 7, 2023, at her home after a 16-month battle with pancreatic cancer.

Dar was born March 31, 1947, in Dubuque. She was the daughter of Charles and Adelia &nbsp;Atkinson Adams. She graduated from Auburn High School in Rockford, Ill., in 1965. On Aug. 27, 1966, Dar was united in marriage to Mike Moffett in Rockford, Ill. The couple made their home in the Burlington, Mount Pleasant and Salem communities. Dar worked in the mental health field at locations in Burlington and Mount Pleasant. She enjoyed gardening, picking berries, canning, and showing horses. Mike and Dar volunteered as foster parents. Dar was active in the Burlington High School booster club and Horse Futurities.

Dar was known as “Mom” to so many of her kids’ friends. You never know who would be at the house to eat or sleep. Mike and Dar loved taking road trips together to watch their grandkids play sports all over the United States and if they couldn’t make the trip, they would be cheering them on by watching live streams of games at home.&nbsp;

Dar is survived by her husband Mike; son Erik (Amy) Moffett of Denmark; two daughters Traci (Craig Lewis) Johnson of Bates City, Mo., Nikki (Tyrus) Czeschin of Vestavia Hills, Ala.; seven grandchildren Aubrey and Ava Moffett, Gabe and Zane Czeschin, Kelsey (Clinton) Davis, Brayden and Blake Johnson; one great grandson Crew Davis; brother Dale (Vicki) Adams of Rockton, Ill., Donna (Joe) Kowalewski of Rockford, Ill., Glen Higgenbotham, Peg Johnson; in laws Merritt (Dee) Moffett of New London, Mark (Linda) Moffett of Mount Pleasant, and Beverly Sloan of Eldon.

She was preceded in death by her parents, grandson Tate Czeschin, brother Buzzy Adams and sister Charlene Adams, brother-in-law Jerry Sloan, brother-in-law Roger Newbold, and sister-in-law Joan Newbold.&nbsp;

Francis Dewayne Cross, 78, of Burlington, died Sunday, Aug. 6, 2023, at the Danville Care Center in Danville.

Born April 12, 1945, in Iowa City, he was the son of Ernie and Anna Fielder Cross. On June 28, 1962, he married Anna Avon Adair in Clarinda. She died on June 19, 2019.

Francis was the owner of FC Construction for many years. He and his wife also opened a bar, Frans Place, and later a restaurant, Fran's and Ann's.

He was a worker, he could be found outside working in his yard and garden or hauling things for people. He enjoyed going to and having yard sales and adding to his many collections. He enjoyed taking drives around the area. Most of all he loved to spend time with his family and his cat, Sugar.&nbsp;

Survivors include three sons, Dewayne (Therese) Cross of Burlington, Randy Cross of Middletown, and Brian (Katie) Cross of Plainfield, Ind.; two daughters, Angie (Randy) Crowell of Burlington, and Marsha (Pat) Zahn of Middletown; five grandchildren, Jermie, Casey, Delaney, Anna, and Mariah; five great-grandchildren; one brother, Robert Fielder, and one sister, Vada England.

Besides his wife, Ann Cross, he was preceded in death by his parents and five siblings.&nbsp;

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh Crematory.

Per his wishes, there will be no services at this time.

Marilyn H. Lewis Anderson, 98, of Burlington, died Sunday, Aug. 6, 2023, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice in West Burlington.

Born Jan. 23, 1925, in West Burlington, she was the daughter of Clarence Philip and Mildred Helen DeWitt Lietsch. On May 22, 1943, she married Floyd E. Lewis at St. Mary's Catholic Church in West Burlington. He died July 7, 1995. On Jan. 1, 1997, she married Clarence W. "Bud" Anderson at Messiah Lutheran Church in Burlington. He died Feb. 21, 2011.

She attended St. Mary's grade school and graduated from St. Paul's Catholic High School.&nbsp;

She was a member of S.S. Mary and Patrick Catholic Church, West Burlington, and was active in their Altar and Rosary Society.&nbsp; She bowled for 25 years with the Senior League in Burlington. She was a member of the Happy Hookers, a sewing club in Chicago. Marilyn was very crafty and could be found sewing, quilting and doing various other craft projects. She enjoyed traveling and camping with her family. She was an avid reader and could always be found with a book in her hands. Her family meant everything to her.&nbsp;

Survivors include her three sons, Mark Lewis of Chillicothe, David Lewis of Burlington, and Andrew (Tina) Lewis of Altoona; two daughters, Jane (Robert) Knoll of Burlington, and Nancy (Ernie) Beeney of Trivoli, Ill.; 18 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; 17 great great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews, and sister-in-law, Sharon Knutson.

Besides her husbands, she was preceded in death by her parents, four sisters, Doris Wiele, De Etta Senn, Elizabeth Karle and Joanne Rodger, and one brother, John Lietsch.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until 12:30 PM Saturday, Aug. 12, 2023, at Divine Mercy Parish-SS. Mary and Patrick Catholic Church, West Burlington.

The Funeral Mass of the Resurrection for Mrs. Anderson will be 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 12, 2023, at SS. Mary and Patrick Catholic Church, West Burlington with Fr. Jake Greiner as the Celebrant. Marilyn H. Lewis Anderson

She was born on June 27, 1930, the daughter of Walter and Birdie Fleming.&nbsp; She was the 8th&nbsp;of 10 children, and her mom died when she was only 6 years old.&nbsp; It wasn’t until she was a freshman that she arrived at Charlie and Evelyn Davis’ home.&nbsp; Evelyn would become known as “My momma” to Iola, and their family would always be an important part of her life.&nbsp; She was blessed to stay with them in a loving home until she graduated from Clemens High School in 1947.&nbsp; During her high school years, she excelled at sports and music.&nbsp; Music remained a huge part of her life.&nbsp; Whether inciting a family sing-a-long or being an Andy Williams groupie, music was always present.

Iola married Robert Batey in 1955, and they began building a life together, creating a home that was filled with love and lots of activity.&nbsp; Always a nurturer, Iola not only made her children feel secure and loved, she saved any abandoned animal that was brought to her home.

Iola was a constant motion machine.&nbsp; She raised children (in the beginning without indoor plumbing), and maintained a well-ordered household, with beautiful flowerbeds and gardens.&nbsp; She had a gifted mind and provided the foundation for every family business endeavor. Yet, if you visited her home, there was always homemade bread and jam, and a delicious meal ready at a moment’s notice.

She loved a good auction.&nbsp; An avid furniture restorer and antique collector, she became a respected member of that community for her knowledge.&nbsp; Her daughter once asked her, “How do you know so much about this stuff?”&nbsp; And she replied, “They weren’t antiques when I was using them.”

Iola never needed the limelight.  She just had a strong work ethic that she needed to satisfy her own personal goals.  She wasn’t a self-promoter, but she was a promoter of all the people she loved.&nbsp;

She is survived by her children, Gary (Donna) Batey, Cynda (Tom) Kinnemann, Kathleen Batey, Ted (Peggy) Batey, Scott Batey, Tim (Kerry) Batey, Todd (Deb) Batey, Sally (Alan Miller-deceased) Johnson, and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.

Iola was preceded in death by her husband Robert and her siblings.&nbsp;

The funeral service will be held&nbsp;10:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 12, 2023&nbsp;at the First Presbyterian Church in Mount Pleasant. Burial will be in the Forest Home Cemetery. Visitation will be held&nbsp;2 to 7 p.m. Friday, August 11, at Olson-Powell Chapel &amp; Crematory, family will be present to greet friends&nbsp;beginning at 5 p.m.&nbsp;In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established for the MPCSD Music Boosters.&nbsp;

She just had a strong work ethic that she needed to satisfy her own personal goals. She wasn’t a self-promoter, but she was a promoter of all the people she loved.&nbsp;She is survived by her children, Gary (Donna) Batey, Cynda (Tom) Kinnemann, Kathleen Batey, Ted (Peggy) Batey, Scott Batey, Tim (Kerry) Batey, Todd (Deb) Batey, Sally (Alan Miller-deceased) Johnson, and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.Iola was preceded in death by her husband Robert and her siblings.&nbsp;The funeral service will be held&nbsp;10:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 12, 2023&nbsp;at the First Presbyterian Church in Mount Pleasant. Burial will be in the Forest Home Cemetery. Iola Marie Batey

Zelda “Sam” Caroline Ehlers Inman,92, died Sunday, Aug. 6, 2023.

She was the daughter of Arthur Fredrick Ehlers and Karoline Schwartz Ehlers. She was born at home Dec. 6, 1930, on the Arthur Ehlers family farm (still in the family) 4 miles South of Arcadia, Iowa. In December she was baptized in the Lutheran faith at Zion Lutheran Church in Arcadia, Iowa by the Reverend Theo Tews. She was confirmed in 1944 in Zion Lutheran in Arcadia. She attended a one-room country school and then graduated in 1949 from Arcadia High School.

On June 26, 1949, she married Harvey Kienast at the Zion Lutheran Church by the Reverend Theo Tews in Arcadia.

In 1954 she moved to the Arthur Ehlers farm near Denison. Living on the farm she milked cows by hand and did other chores the old-fashioned way. For the last two years she did the farming by herself and took the kids to Zion Lutheran Parochial School in Denison, while her husband Harvey worked at the factory in Denison.

In 1966 the family moved to Burlington, where Sam owned and operated a motel for several years. She was a member of Concordia Lutheran Church in Burlington.

On July 12, 1968, she married James Inman at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Aledo, Ill. They were married for 48 years. He died Aug. 27, 2016. They were very much in love and very compatible. She played drums with Jim Inman and Westerners Band, playing three nights a week. Jim and Sam worked daytime jobs as well for several years. Sam owned and managed the Inman’s Country Diamond in Gulfport, Ill.

In Burlington, she worked in home health, at McKesson &amp; Robbins and was the booking agent for the band. She worked as an alcohol and drug counselor for ADDS (Alcohol Drug Dependency Service) retiring at the age of 72 years old with 15 years of service.

At Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, she was very active in the Ladies Aide Society, always willing to help. She believed in helping people on the farms and organized farmers to come and plant corn, pick it or whatever the season was whenever someone was injured or seriously ill. She donated their band to play benefits for injured or seriously sick or a death to help with expenses.

She is survived by her eight children Vickie (Greg) Lee, Linda (Gary) Virgin, Ronald Kienast, Kim Kienast (daughter-in-law) all of Burlington. Darrell Inman of Sherrard, Ill., Alicia Haupt of Goofy Ridge, Ill., Elaine (Tom) Roundtree of Milan, Ill., Raymond (Sarah) Inman of Coal Valley, Ill., and Jami Renee Inman-Bell (Elliott Bell) of Gotha, Fla. She also raised two grandchildren Andrea Lane and David Jacob Mathias and great-granddaughter Kinley Mathias; 32 grandchildren; 60 great-grandchildren; eight great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, grandparents, husbands, four children Kristi Renee Kienast, John Arthur Kienast, Lori Lynn Kienast, and Donnie Inman; daughter-in-law Juli Inman; three brothers Marvin Ehlers in infancy, Alvin Ehlers and his wife Valeria Ehlers of Clinton, Glen and his wife Shirley Ehlers of Arcadia; sisters-in-law Edna Pullen, Shirley Kohl and Judy Inman and one brother-in-law Ron Inman.

Jim Inman was the love of her life. They enjoyed spending a lot of time together. They played with the band at the Steamboat Senior Center for the last 26 years for dances. She played drums for the last seven years at the center.

The funeral service for Mrs. Inman will be held at Concordia Lutheran Church at 10 a.m., Wednesday, August 9 with Pastor Christopher Roepke officiating. Interment will follow in Aspen Grove Cemetery. The family will receive friends 5 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, August 8 at Lunning Chapel with a service of the word following visitation.

Memorials have been established for Concordia, Lutheran Church, Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House, and the Senior Citizen Center.

Zelda "Sam" Inman

Dr. Philip Eves, 71, of Burlington, died Thursday, Aug. 3, 2023. His two daughters, Jane and Catherine, were with him.

Born Dec. 27, 1951, near Melbourne, Australia, he was the son of Peter and Ronda Eves.

Philip earned his doctorate from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, where he met fellow student, Mary. They wed on Aug. 13, 1983.

After almost 20 years in Australia, Philip and Mary moved back to Mary’s hometown of Burlington in 1998, where they opened Diggers Rest coffeehouse.

Philip was a man of many talents and hobbies, and his conversation around a cup of coffee will be deeply missed.

In his later years, he rekindled a passion for woodworking and renovated his basement into a woodshop, where he created one-of-a-kind pieces of furniture for family and friends. He was also a talented writer. He authored the book “Brothers in Arms: Diggers of the Great War” in 2013, after wanting to learn more about his grandfather’s experiences during World War I.

Philip’s family includes his mother, Ronda; daughters, Jane and Catherine; and three sisters, Jo, Mandy, and Cathy.

Philip was preceded in death by his wife, Mary; his father, Peter; and his dog, Blue.

The graveside committal service for Dr. Eves will be Friday, Aug. 11, 2023, at 2:30 p.m., with Jerry Rigdon officiating. Those wishing to attend the service will meet at the Sunnyside Avenue gate prior to the service for a procession to the gravesite.

William P. Payne, 68, of West Burlington, died Wednesday, Aug. 2, 2023, at the University of Iowa Hospitals &amp; Clinics in Iowa City. Born Feb. 20, 1955, in Ottumwa, Iowa, he was the son of Philip P. and Beulah J. Myers Payne. He was a graduate of Ottumwa High School.&nbsp; Bill worked as an electrician for the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway for 42 years, before his retirement in 2015. Bill was a kind and caring man who always tried to help those around him.&nbsp; He loved riding his Harley and exploring the countryside of southeast Iowa.&nbsp; He liked to play cards and various games.&nbsp; He was an avid golfer, bowler, and pool player.&nbsp; He was a deacon at Sunnyside Baptist Church and enjoyed his church family and being able to worship with them.&nbsp; Moreover, Bill loved his family. His wife of 49 years, Carol, his three sons, and his grandchildren were the light of his life.&nbsp; Bill's passing leaves an emptiness in our hearts, but his memory and legacy continue on through all who love him. Survivors include his wife, Carol Ann Payne; three sons, Thaddeus (Julee) Payne, Matthew (Kari) Payne, and Justin Payne; ten grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; siblings, Connie (Dan) Cavanaugh, Mary Ann (Rick) Southworth, Frank (Cheri) Payne, Marty Simonson and Danny (Melissa) Simonson; and sisters-in-law, Mary Payne and Beatrice Diehl. Michael was self employed, owning his own masonry business. He also&nbsp; worked in scrapping. Michael loved to shoot pool, fishing, motorcycles,&nbsp; and golfing at the former Hend-Co-Hills golf course. He was a member of&nbsp; High Point Church in Monmouth, Ill., where he was a member of the&nbsp; praise band. Michael was quite the drummer and enjoyed playing. Michael is survived by his parents, Jim and Sherry Louck of Oquawka, Ill.,&nbsp; his sister, Babbie (J.R. Brown) Porter of Oquawka, Ill., his brother, Bill&nbsp; (Elizabeth Bundy) Louck of Oquawka, Ill., one niece, Halee Porter, three&nbsp; nephews, Payne Porter, Miles Brown, and James Louck, III, all of&nbsp; Oquawka, Ill.. Carolyn Jean Moehn Good, 74, of East Northport, NY passed away on April 5, 2023, surrounded by her devoted family. 

She was the beloved wife of John Linn Good; loving mother of Sarah Jane Staples and her husband Sean, John Robert Good, and Daniel Bayler Good and his wife Nina; cherished grandmother of Lauren Jean Staples, Erin Linn Staples, Merrick Gregory Good, and John Lachlan Good; dear sister of Katheryn Jenifer; and caring aunt of Kari Glemaker and Katie Jenifer. 

Carolyn was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Dolores Moehn; grandparents, Walter and Martha Moehn and Alfred and Jessie Leasch; and her niece, Kelly Ramseur.

Carolyn was born on August 16, 1948, in Burlington. She graduated from Danville High School in 1966 and then earned an associate's degree from Burlington Community College. 

She met John in Hampton, Virginia and they married at the Danville Methodist Church on August 1, 1969. She and John lived in Connecticut and South Carolina before settling in East Northport where they raised their three children with happiness, dedication, and endless affection.

Carolyn was fondly known as “Mom” at home and was most proud of that title. She will always be remembered for her warm smile, caring heart, kind manner, and tender touch. She filled those around her with joy, laughter, and companionship. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, getting together with friends and family, sports of all kinds, and traveling.

A memorial service for Carolyn will be 11 a.m., Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2023, at Long Creek United Methodist Church with the Rev. David Mixon officiating. Inurnment will immediately follow in Long Creek Cemetery, rural Danville.   A luncheon will follow the burial at Long Creek United Methodist Church.

Carolyn Jean Moehn Good

Jerome Paul Kersten, of Peoria, was born June 2, 1937, in Beemer, Neb. He passed away on Saturday, July 29, peacefully at home at age 86 with his family at his side.  Jerome served two years on the USS Taylor (DD/DDE-468) with tours to Hong Kong, Japan, and Okinawa.  Jerome married Shirley Mae Schulz on May 1, 1960. He was a grain merchandiser and elevator manager for ADM Growmark in Peoria, Ill., from 1958 until his retirement in 2000.

Jerome was an active, founding member of Living Waters Lutheran Church, Peoria.  He was a recent Peoria Honor Flight Veteran.  After his Parkinson’s diagnosis, Jerome boxed in the local Rock Steady program as "Saint Jerome." Jerome served his Lord with his time and talents as he volunteered in many ways, including reading Sunday Scriptures, leading bible studies, teaching Luther’s Small Catechism, tending a community garden, building ramps, and cleaning up after Hurricane Katrina in Biloxi Miss., and the tornados of Joplin, Mo., and Washington, Ill.

Jerome is survived by his wife Shirley of 63 years and their 4 daughters: Cynthia Rowley (William) of Dubuque, Iowa; Lisa Ellison (Tony) of Wever, Iowa; Teresa Anderson (Scott) of Peoria, Ill.; and Dr. Pamela Durr (Allen) of Mapleton, Ill.; 10 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; his brother Jerald Kersten (Nancy) of Omaha, Neb., and sister Joyce Pasold (Clifford) of Fremont, Neb., and many dear in-laws, cousins, nieces, and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Lavina Kersten. 

Visitation will be Friday, Aug 4, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Living Waters Lutheran Church, 7229 Knoxville Ave., Peoria. Funeral with military rites will be at the church on Saturday, Aug 5, at 11 a.m. with visitation one hour before the service.

Jerome served two years on the USS Taylor (DD/DDE-468) with tours to Hong Kong, Japan, and Okinawa. Jerome married Shirley Mae Schulz on May 1, 1960. He was a grain merchandiser and elevator manager for ADM Growmark in Peoria, Ill., from 1958 until his retirement in 2000.Jerome was an active, founding member of Living Waters Lutheran Church, Peoria. He was a recent Peoria Honor Flight Veteran. After his Parkinson’s diagnosis, Jerome boxed in the local Rock Steady program as "Saint Jerome." Marjorie Ann Streeter, 86, of Burlington, died on Saturday, July 29, 2023. Born on Jan. 27, 1937, in Burlington, she was the daughter of John and Ruth Zaugg Hodel. She married Edward Streeter on Sept. 24, 1976, in Monmouth, Ill. Marge retired from Klein Manufacturing. She was a member of the Burlington Apostolic Christian Church.

Survivors include Edward’s children, Virginia (Mike) Pyle of West Burlington, &nbsp;Edward F. Streeter of North Liberty, Yvonne (Karl) Judd of Montrose, daughter-in-law Cindy (Tom) Myers of Memphis, Mo.; sisters Dorothy Rinkenberger of Spring, Texas, and Judy (Bill) Gerst of Mediapolis, brother-in-law John (Melinda) Streeter of Morrison, Colo., and sisters-in-law Yvonne Gallagher of La Jolla, Calif., and Carol Streeter of Colo. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Marge was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, five brothers-in-law, three nephews, and one niece.

Friends may call after 12 &nbsp;p.m. Thursday, Aug. 3 and the family will receive friends from 5 to 7:00 p.m. at Lunning Chapel. Marjorie Ann Streeter

Kimberly Jo Coleman, 60, of Burlington, died Sunday, July 30, 2023, at Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born Dec. 10, 1962, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Joseph Howard Coleman and Judy Inghram Newberry, and Diane Goble Coleman.

She was a 1980 graduate of Burlington High School and was Valedictorian of her class.

She married Jeffrey Chalupa Oct. 3, 1982, and they later divorced. She then married John Parcel on June 24, 1989. They later divorced.

Kimm was a manager in sales for Tupperware. In addition, she worked for Sears Portrait Studio as a manager and owned and operated her own photography studio. She worked for Hope Haven and Shearers Foods and was an author, with four books published.

She was dedicated to her family and loved being a “Grammy”. She felt laughter was language, and enjoyed nothing more than sitting listening to her children talk and laugh with one another. She could make anything and loved crafting and taking yearly trips with her brother Joe and Nancy. Christmas was her utmost favorite holiday and she celebrated all year long . &nbsp;She loved music and writing songs.

She is survived by her children, Adam (Ani) Chalupa, Nicholas Chalupa, and Jessica Parcel all of Burlington, Jennifer Parcel of Crystal River, Fla., Jonathan (Sarah) Parcel, and Erin (Jason) Bradley both of Burlington; six grandchildren; Xander (Emma) Chalupa, Jenna Chalupa, Natalie Parcel, Nolan Waters, Auggie Waters and Jaxon Stratton; her mother Judy Newberry of Johnstown, Colo.; step-mother Diane Coleman of Burlington; siblings, Joe Coleman, Jeoffrey Coleman and John Coleman all of Burlington and Cindy Baldwin of Johnstown, Colo.; nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her father Joe Coleman, her brother James “Jim” Coleman, and her step-father, Harry Newberry.

The memorial funeral service for Kimm will be 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 4 at Lunning Chapel. Rev. Shane McCampbell will officiate. Visitation will be from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 3 at Lunning Chapel, where the family will receive friends.

A celebration of life will follow the funeral service at the Burlington Gym.

Larry Dean Collins, 65, of Valrico, Fla., formerly of Terre Haute, Ill., lost a two-year-long battle to lung cancer on Thursday, July 13, 2023, at Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, Fla.&nbsp; Larry was born on Dec. 20, 1957, in La Harpe, Ill., the son of Wesley R. and Lois E. Bennett Collins. He married Brenda K. Bennett on Sept. 3, 1977, at Terre Haute United Methodist Church. Larry graduated from La Harpe High School in 1976. He worked at Housewright Lumber Yard before moving to Florida to work at a family business, of Bennett Custom Homes. He later went to work for South Co. Construction, where he was a construction supervisor until he retired. Larry loved his family and enjoyed doing things for them and working on his classic cars. Leanna L. Leffel, 81, of Burlington, died Friday, July 28 at Arbor Court in Mount Pleasant.

Born Nov. 21, 1941, in Union, Iowa, she was the daughter of Richard and Inez Mitchell Wolford. She married Gary Leffel on Aug. 16, 1960, in Burlington.

Leanna was a homemaker. She enjoyed traveling with her husband and family.

She is survived by her husband, Gary Leffel of Burlington; three sons, Mitchell Leffel of Eureka, Calif., Richard Leffel of San Diego, Calif. and Michael Leffel of Stagecoach, Nev.; three grandsons, Derek Leffel, Mitchell Leffel, and Isaac Leffel; four great-grandchildren; one sister Linda Vandeman of Ashland, Neb. and one brother Darwin Wolford of Burlington.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Evelyn Orton, 80, of Danville, died Friday, July 28, 2023, at Danville Care Center in Danville.

Born Jan. 30, 1943, in Fort Madison, she was the daughter of William and Irene Knoch Brennan. She was a 1961 graduate of Fort Madison High School.

She married Earl Edward Orton on March 3, 1962. He preceded her in death on Feb. 22, 2013.

Evelyn worked for Sylvania, K-Mart, and more recently as a home health aide and homemaker.

She enjoyed gardening, canning, sewing, and reading and loved her family and friends.

She is survived by her two children; Kevin Orton of Burlington and Diane (Russ) Dorsey of Indianola; one grandchild; three brothers, Glenn (Gloria) Brennan of Council Bluffs, David (Ethea) Brennan of Edwards, Mo., and Gary Brennan of Osawatomie, Kan.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son Bryan Orton, two brothers, and one sister.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 1 at Lunning Chapel where the family will receive friends. The funeral service will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 2 at Lunning Chapel. Pastor Ron Jewett will officiate. Interment will be in Long Creek Cemetery, rural Danville.

Linda Sue Smith, 72, of Sperry, died Thursday, July 27, 2023, at Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born Oct. 4, 1950, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Harold and Dorthy (Riley) Ashby. She married John Fenton in 1969, and they later divorced. She then married Robert Smith on Sept. 3, 1976.

Linda was special in so many ways. She contributed so much of herself from boy scout leader to working for child protective services for Louisa County. She helped with the Happy Bear Program, going into schools and explaining good and bad touches and signs of child abuse to children.

She had a love for animals. She was the Hannibal Animal Shelter manager for years, during which time she saved many animals and rehomed them, helping with fundraisers to fund their programs. More recently, Linda ran and maintained security for the Burlington airport for several years.

She was the best cook, the most popular was her fried chicken. There wasn’t anything she couldn’t make. She loved to garden and had the biggest garden you would ever see. She always sat a big basket of produce at the end of her road to give away to others. She loved her family and life and will be missed greatly.

Linda is survived by her husband, Robert “Bob” Smith of Sperry; three children, Lori (Mike) Thie of Sperry, and Dean (Michelle) Fenton and Jon Fenton both of Burlington; twelve grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; lots of fur children; one sister, Donna Heland of Burlington; one brother Daryl Ashby of Burlington and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, son Troy Fenton and three brothers.

Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, July 31 at Lunning Chapel where the family will receive friends. A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. with Pastor Bruce Smith officiating.

According to her wishes, cremation has been accorded and entrusted to the care of Lunning Chapel. Burial will be at a later date in Aspen Grove Cemetery.

Linda Sue Smith

James Walter Harmer, 82, died July 19, 2023, after a lengthy illness.Born April 18, 1941, in Burlington, he was the son of Daisy and Robert Harmer. He married Lucinda Heater and together they had two daughters, Renee and Glenna. They later divorced. James then met the love of his life Doyce, and they married.

He was a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Air Force for four years, supervisor in the testing department of the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant and later worked in the automobile business for 35 years in roles ranging from service manager to president and general manager. He retired from Ron Smith Buick in Merced, Calif. after working as a sales consultant for 19 years.&nbsp;

Jim was a member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars as well as a member of the Optimist Club, Coin Club, and local Neighborhood Watch. He enjoyed photography, traveling overseas and exploring California and the national parks, especially Yosemite, staying in touch with his high school classmates, and cooking. He was known for his rib dinners.

Jim is survived by his wife of 45 years, Doyce and his six children, Renee (Damion) Piper, Glenna Nordstrom, Vicky Pebsworth, Rex Pebsworth, Terri Pebsworth and Paula (Keith Riggle) Pebsworth; ten grandchildren, Daniel, Alex, Sierra, Brooke, Sam, Ben, Megan, Madison, Abigail and Bryce; four great-grandchildren, Brienna, Quinn, Jaxon and Holly. He is also survived by his sisters Maryann (Larry) Werner and Geraldine Peavy, and many nieces and nephews including special niece Kay (Tim) Evans.

He was preceded in death by his sister Dorothy Fehseke and brothers Roland and Robert Hahn and former wife Lucinda Heater.

Visitation will be from 9 to 11:00 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 3, 2023, at Prugh Funeral Service, 3940 Division Street. Full military honors will be rendered by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard following the visitation.&nbsp;

The Graveside Committal Service for Mr. Harmer will be 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 3, 2023, at Aspen Grove Cemetery. &nbsp;A time of food and fellowship will be held in the community room at Prugh Funeral Service following the burial. A memorial gathering will be held in Merced, California at a future date.

 </figure>James Walter Harmer, 82, died July 19, 2023, after a lengthy illness.Born April 18, 1941, in Burlington, he was the son of Daisy and Robert Harmer. He married Lucinda Heater and together they had two daughters, Renee and Glenna. They later divorced. James then met the love of his life Doyce, and they married.He was a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Air Force for four years, supervisor in the testing department of the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant and later worked in the automobile business for 35 years in roles ranging from service manager to president and general manager. He retired from Ron Smith Buick in Merced, Calif. after working as a sales consultant for 19 years.&nbsp;Jim was a member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars as well as a member of the Optimist Club, Coin Club, and local Neighborhood Watch. He enjoyed photography, traveling overseas and exploring California and the national parks, especially Yosemite, staying in touch with his high school classmates, and cooking. Pamela Sue Scott, 67, of Salem, died Sunday, July 23, 2023, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in West Burlington.

Pamela was born on Jan. 13, 1956, in Macomb, Ill. the daughter of Robert and Catherine Feehan Barnes, Sr.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;She was united in marriage to Gary Scott, Sr., who preceded her in death in 1976.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Pamela was a very loving, caring person who was always there for her family and friends.&nbsp;&nbsp;She loved to be outside fishing and hunting mushrooms and taking care of her pets.&nbsp;&nbsp;She was a great cook, but most of all spending time with her family was the most important thing to her.

She is survived by her children, Gary (Kimberly) Scott, Jr. of Burlington and Anna Webb (Pat Kinaman) of Salem, her grandchildren, Britny, Dominick, Tracey, Isaac, Ady, Braiden, Raelenya, Abigail, and Dillion, two great-grandchildren, her sister, Connie Henry, of Carman, Ill., her step brothers and sisters, John Feehan, of Mt. Pleasant, Steve Feehan, of Salem, Linda Weir, of Rome and Carla Woodsmall, of Lockridge,&nbsp;&nbsp;along with several nieces and nephews.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Pamela was preceded in death by her parents, her sister, Becky Barnes, her brother, Robert Barnes, Jr., and a step-sister, Ilene Duncan.

Pamela’s family will host a celebration of her life on Saturday, July 29, 2023, beginning at 2 p.m. at her home in Salem.&nbsp;&nbsp;Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Murphy Funeral Home of Mt. Pleasant.

Norma Jean Smith, 85, of West Burlington, died Saturday, July 22, 2023, surrounded by family.&nbsp;

Born April 3, 1938, in Clinton, she was the daughter of Roy and Pansy Holman Rice. She was raised by her Uncle Mart. On May 12, 1956, she married Maurice Alton Smith in Morrison, Ill. He died Jan. 31, 2002.

Survivors include her children, Cheryl Noble, Bobbie &nbsp;Scovern, Maurice &nbsp;Smith, Jr., and Marty Smith; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Norma has chosen to donate her body to the University of Iowa Deeded Body Program to continue the educational development of future generations. There will be no formal services.&nbsp;

A memorial has been established for Southeast Iowa Regional Home Hospice.

Joseph E. “Joe” Deal, 82, of Burlington, died unexpectedly Saturday, July 15, 2023, in Panama City, Panama.

Born Aug. 1, 1940, in Spring Valley, Ill., he was the son of Sanford and Alice Glover Deal. After graduating from DePue Illinois High School, he earned his bachelor’s degree from Elmhurst College.

He served in the Army during the Vietnam War.

Joe married Sandra Holtman on Feb. 12, 1966, in Ursa, Ill.

Prior to purchasing Central Duplicating, which he owned and operated for 22 years, Joe worked for the AB Dick Company in Chicago and resided in Lombard, Ill. He currently was serving as president of the MFS Insurance Company board. In addition, Joe served on the governing board of the Mayflower Community an affiliation of the United Church of Christ, as well as served on the United Church of Christ Conference Board. Joe also received his NCAA official certification for swimming.

He was a member of Zion United Church of Christ and served on the consistory and sang in the church choir.

Joe was very sociable and loved to talk with and visit people. He did not know a stranger, he loved to tease and joke around and had an infectious smile that would light up a room.

He is survived by his wife Sandra Deal of Burlington; three daughters, Diana (Scott) Casady of Waukee, Julie Deal of Portland, Ore. and Andrea (Tony) Lallis of Troy, Mo.; three granddaughters, Ainsley Drinkall, Finley Casady, Zoey Lallis; two grandsons, Jamison Lallis and Bailey Lallis; one brother John Deal; three sister-in-laws Wilna Johnston, Jeanette Werner and Sylvia (Ralph) Baxter as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three siblings, Mary Jean Carstons, Warren Johnston and Robert Johnston.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7:00 p.m. Monday, August 7 at Lunning Chapel, where the family will receive friends. A memorial funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, August 8 at Zion United Church of Christ. Rev. Carolyn Blair will officiate. A private family burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.

A memorial has been established for Zion United Church of Christ.
