Timothy M. Grant, 64, died Monday, July 17, 2023, at Genesis Medical Center, in Davenport, Iowa.

Born March 28, 1959, in Wood River, Illinois, he was the son of Oscar and Nellie (Fox) Grant Hellemeyer. He married Lisa Brunk on May 16, 1998.

Tim earned his master’s degree from American International University in Business Administration and Healthcare Management and worked as a Medical Technologist for over 40 years, ending his career as a lab manager. In addition, he had been a substitute teacher for the Dallas City and Central Illinois public school system and taught one semester at Southeastern Community College. He was an Army veteran.

Tim enjoyed making crafts and sold them at many shows, most recently at the Very Vintage Market held in downtown Burlington. He loved fishing and Sci-Fi. He was a very giving and generous man to all that knew him, he was patient with teaching people to do things and was “wicked smart”. Tim always tried to do for others.

He is survived by his wife, Lisa Grant of Danville; his daughter, Carmen Grant of Warsaw, Ill.; two grandchildren, Kyler Grant Leonard and Mili Willing; his mother, Nellie Hellemeyer of Fort Madison; sister, Stacy Grant (Brian Gistover) of Fort Madison; brother, Tom (Michelle) Grant of Pierron, Ill.; mother and father-in-law, Steven and Beverly Brunk of Danville; brother-in-law, Troy (Allison) Brunk of Cedar Rapids; and several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews and his three furry kids, Remi, Quincy, Tipper.

He was preceded in death by his father, paternal and maternal grandparents and sister-in-law Mary Grant.

Visitation with family present will be 5 to 7:00 p.m. Thursday, July 20 at Lunning Chapel. The Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard will conduct military rites at 7 p.m. According to his wishes, cremation will be accorded following the visitation. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery at a later date.

Memorials in memory of Timothy Grant may be made to P.A.W.S. Animal Shelter of Fort Madison or for Disabled Veterans.

James E. Neumann, 85, died of an aneurysm in his brain July 11 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City. His family was with him.

Mr. Neumann spent his youngest years in and near Arenzville, Ill.. The family moved to Chicago when his father was appointed pastor at Luther Memorial Church on Wilson Avenue. He often shared stories about delivering the Chicago Tribune, taking the El downtown for piano lessons, and life on the Chicago streets. He was proud of a scholarship he received for art classes at the Art Institute and of his alma mater Lane Tech College Prep High School. He majored in art at Colorado College.&nbsp;

After graduation, he enlisted in the army and was stationed in the demilitarized zone in Korea.&nbsp;

He received his MA in printmaking and later his MFA in painting at the University of Iowa. It was there he met his future wife by winking at her across the print room. He was an excellent winker. They were married in Burlington at the bride’s family home overlooking the Mississippi.&nbsp;

Mr. Neumann always said that art was what he was meant to do. His first jobs were as gallery director at the Asheville Museum of Art and then as Director of Education at the Greenville County Museum of Art. Most significantly, he taught printmaking for 30 plus years at Western Illinois University in Macomb, Ill. Devoted to his students, he worked alongside them in his print room, teaching by example, demonstration and philosophy. Although formally trained in Intaglio and relief techniques, he was interested in many different mediums and made sculptures, lithographs, and weavings. He built tables, bookcases, music stands, toys and a screened-in porch on the back of the house. After retiring and while waiting on the transplant list, he learned to make pots. In his eighties he worked primarily in ink pen and acrylic paint and often stated that he was making the best art of his life. He made art every day, including the day he died. His daughters agree that he was the best dad. He taught them to make prints, to really look at things, to draw with a sharp pencil. He taught one to build structures strong and secure and he taught the other that if you handed over the hammer to your father he would finish the nail. He always carried their violins.&nbsp;

Mr. Neumann had health challenges throughout his life including two brain bleeds and a brain operation. He was diagnosed with idiopathic cirrhosis of the liver in his early 60s. In 2008 he received the miracle of a liver transplant. His grandson said “I got to know Grandfather for 21 years, and I was not supposed to. He was supposed to die when I was 5.” The family is forever thankful to the transplant team at the UI, health care providers who have cared for him over the years and the anonymous donor who gave him extra time.

He was preceded in death by his father, mother and brother Michael.&nbsp;

Survivors include his wife of 57 years Jean Cooper Neumann, daughters Mary and Helen, grandchildren Irene Rose and Billy James, siblings Krista and David, and many loved cousins, and nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind a cat named Maude and 4000 pots.&nbsp;

An art show and celebration of life is being planned for a later date.

Robert &nbsp;E. "Bobby" Bauer, 80, of West Burlington, died Friday, July 14, 2023, at his home.

Born Oct. &nbsp;11, 1942, in Madison, Minn., he was the son of Fredrick and Martha Croatt Bauer.&nbsp;

Upon graduating High School, Robert served in the United States Air Force for four years. After his service, he worked all of his work life for Armor Meat Packing.

Robert was a very social person and he enjoyed going to the casino and spending time with his friends.

Survivors include his two sisters, Elizabeth Raasch of Moorhead, Minn. and Jane Bauer of Willmar, Minn. and many cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Jim Bauer and sister, Lois Bauer.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh Crematory.

John Edward McMillan, 50, of Burlington, died Tuesday, July 18, 2023, at his home.

Born Jan. 5, 1973, in Burlington, he was the son of Robert McMillan Jr. and Mary Ellen Norton McMillan.

John was a jack of all trades and a very talented mechanic. He was proud of his tattoos, loved his cats and spending time fishing but most importantly being around his nieces and nephews.

He is survived by his parents, Robert McMillan Jr. and Mary Ellen McMillan both of Burlington; sister, Faylea “Fay” Augsberger; two brothers, Roger McMillan and Martin McMillan; two nieces, Dalaina (Tim) Burns and Samantha (Matt Seaney) Osborne; great nieces, Cheyenne Nichols, Alivia Burns, Lillian Morse and Laila Osborne; great nephews, Lucas Seaney and Timothy Burns Jr. and special friend Dawn Estes all of Burlington.

John Edward McMillan

Larry Zahner, 66, longtime businessman of Burlington, died Saturday, July 8, 2023. He was surrounded by his family at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in West Burlington.

Larry was born on Oct. 12, 1956, in Burlington. He was the son of Darrel and Shirley Stafford Zahner.&nbsp; He was well known for his baseball talents, especially during the time that he played for Burlington High School. Along with his teammates, he went on to become a state champion in the fall of 1973. Larry started working at a young age with his grandparents who owned the Winona Monument Company in Burlington. He went on become the owner and established his business as Zahner Memorials.&nbsp;&nbsp;Larry took a great deal of pride in his business of nearly 40 years and the work he did for others.&nbsp; He was known for his honesty, fairness, and caring heart. Aside from the time he dedicated to his career, Larry enjoyed hunting with his buddies and fishing with friends and family up at Lake of the Woods in Minnesota. He was a member of the Sportsman Club of Burlington and Ducks Unlimited.

He is survived by his mother, Shirley Zahner of Burlington, his brothers, Tim (Ronda) Zahner of Shell Rock, David (Jodi) Zahner of Cedar Rapids, Kenneth (Brenda) Zahner of Burlington, his sister, Rose Klein of Burlington, his nieces, Leah (Matt) Weinreich of Burlington, Paige Zahner (Joshua Marroquin) of Cedar Rapids, and Emily Zahner of Des Moines, his nephews, Chad (Krystal) Klein of Burlington, Andrew (Kristin) Klein of Fairfax, Jason, Nick, and Tyler Zahner, Coleton, Jacob, and Joshua Zahner of Burlington, and Zak Zahner of Cedar Rapids, several great nieces and nephews, along with a host of friends.

Dorothy Mae Gerst, 90, of Burlington, died Thursday, July 13, 2023, at the Addington Place in Burlington.

Born Feb. 1, 1933, in Bardolph, Ill., she was the daughter of Herbert and Helen Griffeth. &nbsp;On Aug. 1, 1959, she married Marion "Hank" Gerst in Burlington. &nbsp;He died March 13, 1988.

She attended country grade schools and graduated from Carthage Community High School, Carthage, Ill.

Dorothy was a secretary the majority of her life and at one time was employed at Sylvania Plant.

She was a member of SS. John &amp; Paul Catholic Church. &nbsp;She enjoyed attending and supporting both her granddaughters' activities. &nbsp;She loved taking bus trips with friends, reading, and watching tennis on TV.

Survivors include her son, Patrick Gerst of West Burlington; two granddaughters, Crystal Klein of Burlington, and Amber Gerst of Danville; one great-granddaughter, Haley Foley of Burlington; and several nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband she was preceded in death by her parents, one son, Todd Gerst, one sister, three brothers, one niece and nephew.

The visitation for Mrs. Gerst will be 10 a.m., Monday, July 17, 2023, at Prugh Funeral Service with the graveside service to follow at Sacred Heart Cemetery.

Delores F. Judd, 70, of Burlington, died Thursday, July 13, 2023, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in West Burlington.

Born July 6, 1953, in Kansas City, Mo., she was the daughter of Lyle Emmitt and Mary Louise Tucker Sawyer. She married James Judd on July 5, 1989. He died Feb. 4, 2016.

Delores worked for Heartland Packaging for over 20 years until her retirement in 2015.

She loved playing and researching on her tablet, crocheting, talking on the phone and playing bingo. She was an avid reader and loved being with her family.

She is survived by her four children; Christina Carlson-Judd, Michelle Sawyer, Jamie Calhoon and Brandon Calhoon all of Burlington; eight grandchildren; several great grandchildren; two sisters, Linda DeSpain of Mt. Pleasant, Yvonne (Lawrence) Bragg of Kirksville, Mo. and Garland Sawyer of Quincy, Ill. and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband James.

According to her wishes, cremation has been accorded and entrusted to the care of Lunning Chapel. There will be no formal services. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery at a later date.

Delores F. Judd

Gail L. Rose died Thursday, July 13, 2023.

Born Jan. 7, 1950, in Burlington, he was the son of Donald Dwayne and Leota Fay Seitz Rose.

Gail worked in the parts department for Hockett Toyota, later for H &amp; R Block and finally retired in 1998 after 20 years of serving as a dispatcher with the Burlington Police Department.

He was a relentless Chicago Cubs, Chicago Bears and Iowa Hawkeyes fan, and an avid outdoorsman. He loved fishing and spent many hours making his own lures, sinkers and tackle. He enjoyed woodworking, and could build anything.

Gail spent many years coaching little league in Oquawka, Ill. and loved to run into and visit his former players. He has a beautiful voice and was an amazing singer and guitar player.

Above all else, he adored his children and grandchildren and cherished the time he spent with them.

He will be greatly missed by his two children; Michael (Kelsie) Rose of Harglin, Texas and Cassandra “Cassie” (Austin) Belknap of Burlington; his four grandchildren, X’Zayvian “Boogie” Nicholson, Kaprie Thomas, Timber Rose and Pearl Rose; his siblings, Dennis (Carol) Rose of Burlington and Susan (Kevin) Sumpter of Oquawka, Ill., sister-in-law Marilyn Rose and several nieces and nephews.

Rose died Thursday, July 13, 2023.Born Jan. 7, 1950, in Burlington, he was the son of Donald Dwayne and Leota Fay Seitz Rose.Gail worked in the parts department for Hockett Toyota, later for H &amp; R Block and finally retired in 1998 after 20 years of serving as a dispatcher with the Burlington Police Department.He was a relentless Chicago Cubs, Chicago Bears and Iowa Hawkeyes fan, and an avid outdoorsman. He loved fishing and spent many hours making his own lures, sinkers and tackle. He enjoyed woodworking, and could build anything.Gail spent many years coaching little league in Oquawka, Ill. and loved to run into and visit his former players. He has a beautiful voice and was an amazing singer and guitar player.Above all else, he adored his children and grandchildren and cherished the time he spent with them.He will be greatly missed by his two children; Michael (Kelsie) Rose of Harglin, Texas and Cassandra “Cassie” (Austin) Belknap of Burlington; his four grandchildren, X’Zayvian “Boogie” Nicholson, Kaprie Thomas, Timber Rose and Pearl Rose; his siblings, Dennis (Carol) Rose of Burlington and Susan (Kevin) Sumpter of Oquawka, Ill., sister-in-law Marilyn Rose and several nieces and nephews.He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Larry Rose Sr.The funeral service for Gail will be at 2 p.m. Monday, July 17 at Lunning Chapel. Bryce William Sena, 30, of Danville, formerly of Burlington, died Thursday, July 6, 2023, at his home in Danville.&nbsp;&nbsp;He was born March 10, 1993, in Mt. Pleasant to Marcus Darrell Sena and Angela Joan Mullin.&nbsp;&nbsp;He was a 2011 graduate of Burlington High School and was of the Christian faith.&nbsp;&nbsp;

He worked for seven years at Tenneco in Burlington.&nbsp;&nbsp;Bryce enjoyed fishing, grilling, racing, four-wheeling, and watching NASCAR and sprint races at Knoxville.&nbsp;&nbsp;He especially loved spending time with family, and his son Zeppelin.

Survivors include his son Zeppelin William Sena; his mother Angela Mullin of Burlington; father Marcus Sena of West Burlington; grandparents Carol and William Mullin of Sperry; great-grandmother Joyce Dickey of Donnellson; half-sister Kayla Stafford; half-brother Josh Cook; uncle Jesse (Mandi) Mullin of Mt. Union; many other aunts and uncles; and cousins Broc and Cody.&nbsp;&nbsp;He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents and cousin Drew Mullin.&nbsp;

Steven Jay Blint, 65, of Wever, died Wednesday, July 12, 2023, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice in West Burlington.

Born Jan. 20, 1958, in Fort Madison, he was the son of Glenn and Dorothy Pickle Blint.

Steven was a graduate of Fort Madison High School class of 1976.&nbsp;

Steven often times traveled around Denmark in his Skeeter Scooter (side by side), checking on his farm and his neighbors. He never knew a stranger, he could make conversation with anyone.&nbsp; He was an avid mushroom and squirrel hunter and oftentimes just went along for the ride. It was not uncommon to see Steven at a tractor pull or watching sprint cars. He was a member of the Tri-County Tractor Club. Steven loved his dog Trigger and all of his cows.&nbsp;Working his entire life as a farmer, he never really retired.

Survivors include his fiancée, Kathy Jay of Wever; nine siblings, Gary (Vicki) Blint of West Point, Roger Blint of West Point, Sam (Barb) Blint of New London, Janet Blint of Oskaloosa, Ike (Peggy) Blint of West Point, Jennie Morris of Bushnell, Ill., Janie Blint of Mt Pleasant; brother-in-law, John (Diana) Jay of Burlington; sisters-in-law, Julie Luttenegger of Burlington, Joyce Blint of Denmark, Janette (Todd) Wolfe of West Point; many nieces and nephews, and his right-hand man, Milo Orton.

Mary Elizabeth Snyder, 88, of Burlington, died Sunday, July 9, 2023, at the New London Nursing and Rehab in New London.

Born Dec. 28, 1934, in Mount Union, she was the daughter of Archie and Cecil Menafee Stotts. She married Ralph "Dusty Roads" Chaulk; he died Jan. 20, 2008.

She was a graduate of Mt. Union High School.&nbsp;

Mary worked for JC Penney for 15 years. She also worked for Sylvania for 12 years, and she worked for 12 years at Jack's Discount Store.

She was a member of Oak Street Baptist Church. She enjoyed spending her time reading, playing cards, and watching true crime stories on TV, and Country Western Music. She dearly loved her Dachshunds and spending time with her friends at Robinson Heights. Mary traveled the Country Western circuit with her husband where she met celebrates like Elvis Presley, Merle Haggard, and Johnny and June Cash.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Survivors include two brothers, Earl Wesley (Peggy) Stott of Burlington and Raymond (Edna) Stott of Burlington; step-sister, Ilene Howell of New London; and several nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and four brothers, Gene (Bonnie) Stotts, Harold, Jimmy, and Bobby Stott.

The Graveside Committal Service for Mary will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 19, 2023, at Trinity Cemetery with Pastor Peggy Stott officiating. A time of food and fellowship will be held in the community room at Prugh Funeral Service following the burial.

Jo Ann Costello, 84, of Burlington, died Friday, July 7, 2023, in St. Camillus Hospice Care in Wauwatosa, Wis.

Born July 15, 1938, in Mystic, she was the daughter of &nbsp;Leo Cyril and Lennie Marie Hamm Cooper. &nbsp;On Jan. 9, 1965, she married James Michael Costello in St. Ambrose Cathedral in Des Moines. He died on Dec. 31, 2019.

She was a 1956 graduate of Mystic High School.&nbsp;

Jo Ann worked for Hawkeye Security in Des Moines before becoming a mother and homemaker. In 1981, she and her husband opened their bar "Costello's" on Agency Street, which was at this location until 1991. &nbsp;In 1993, they built a new "Costello's" on Derek Lincoln Drive, which they owned until 2003, when they both retired.&nbsp;

She was a member of Divine Mercy Parish. She lived at Addington Place of Burlington since the Fall of 2021 and made many new friends. She enjoyed watching Cardinals Baseball, Iowa Hawkeyes, and playing bingo. But most of all, she loved spending time with her grandchildren.&nbsp;

Survivors include her daughter, Jill (Michael) Lund of Brookfield, Wis.; three grandchildren: Madeline, Emily and Olivia, and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband Jim, her parents, five brothers, and three sisters.

Visitation will be Monday, July 17, 2023, at Prugh Funeral Service, 3940 Division Street. The family will receive friends following a 4:30 p.m. Rosary Service until 7 p.m.

Terry L. Flatt, 83, &nbsp;died June 28, 2023.&nbsp;

Terry was born and raised in Oklahoma. He earned a Bachelor’s from Philips University in Enid, Okla.; a master’s degree in music education from University of Oklhoma; and a master's in opera/musical theatre stage directing from Indiana University. 

He taught voice and directed choirs, music theater, and opera all over the country including the prestigious College Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati. He was a music professor at East Stroudsburg University for 25 years, and choir director at Stroudsburg United Methodist for 20 years. Many of his students went on to professional careers in music and theater, crediting him as an important mentor.

Terry loved to camp and travel the world with Sheryl. He was an avid science fiction and Star Trek fan. He loved golf, learning the game as a young adult with just a few clubs and whatever golf balls he could find. As a photographer, he achieved recognition for excellence with many photographic subjects.

He is survived by his wife Sheryl, sister Judy (Ernie), son Charles (Stephanie), son Lorin, son Kevin (Kim), and grandchildren Thea and Asher.

He was preceded in death by his mother Louise, father Charles, step-father Tucker, and brother Michael.&nbsp;

Paul H. Ingles, 63, of LaHarpe, Ill., died Thursday, July 6, 2023, at his home.

Paul was born Oct. 7, 1959, in LaHarpe, Ill., the son of Clarence R. and Helen L. Cratsenberg Ingles.&nbsp;

Survivors include three siblings: Donald (Peg) Ingles of Lomax, Melody Hensley of LaHarpe, and Randy (Joyce) Ingles of Harvey, Louisiana, and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother: Gary Ingles and one brother-in-law: Roger Hensley.

Paul attended several area special education schools and worked at the Mental Health Centers of Western Illinois for many years. He enjoyed being a member of the LaHarpe community all of his life, for the past year he resided at the Carthage Terrace, where he made many friends. He also enjoyed participating in Special Olympics and listening to music, especially Kenny Rogers. He was a lifelong member of the LaHarpe Christian Church.&nbsp;

Paul H. Ingles

Stuart Wagner, 94, of Burlington, died Thursday, June 29 at 2:25 a.m.

In keeping with his wishes, he has been cremated. Iowa Cremation is assisting with arrangements.

Stuart was born on July 26, 1928, in Kenmore, N.Y., son of Henry Otto Wagner and Marie Cecil Roth of Buffalo, N.Y.

After graduation from Kenmore Senior High, Stuart enlisted in the US Navy. He served from 1946-1948. He was an aviation electrician in World War II. When service ended he worked as a greens keeper and then at Eastern States Farmers Exchange.

He married Joan Erling Clark on Sept. 2, 1950, at the Church of the Advent in Kenmore, N.Y. In 1952, their son Steven was born and they moved to Huron, Ohio. In 1954, daughter Penny was born. In 1964, they moved to Argos, Ind., where he was employed by Wickes. In 1970, they moved to Bellevue, Iowa. In 1975, he went full-time working with Joan in their antique business of over 40 years. Stuart was a wonderful wood craftsman.

In 2010, Stuart and Joan moved to Burlington, to be closer to Penny’s family.

Surviving are son Steven (Janis) Wagner of Eugene, Ore., and daughter Penny (Jim) Sudbeck of Burlington; five grandchildren, Keli (Micah) Oleson, Sara (Tim) Hoffman, Scott (Kerra) Wagner, Chad (Paula) Wagner, and Emily (Zach) Childs; nine great-grandchildren, Brady Oleson, Elise Oleson, Eli Oleson, Ashlyn Hoffman, Hannah Wagner, Charley Hoffman, Charlotte Wagner, Maley Hoffman, and Ethan Wagner; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Virge Main and Norma Willard; four brothers-in-law, Howard Main, Mac Willard, Don Clark, and Roger Clark; and two sisters-in-law, Jackie Clark, and Norma Clark.

When service ended he worked as a greens keeper and then at Eastern States Farmers Exchange.He married Joan Erling Clark on Sept. 2, 1950, at the Church of the Advent in Kenmore, N.Y. In 1952, their son Steven was born and they moved to Huron, Ohio. In 1954, daughter Penny was born. In 1964, they moved to Argos, Ind., where he was employed by Wickes. In 1970, they moved to Bellevue, Iowa. In 1975, he went full-time working with Joan in their antique business of over 40 years. Janet Beckman passed away on June 26, 2023, in Iowa City.

Janet was born to Dale Glenn and Joye Gladys Locke Beckman on March 16, 1955, in Burlington. She spent her childhood living in Prairie Grove, Iowa. She graduated from Danville High School in 1973 and attended Southeastern Community College in West Burlington, earning an associate’s degree as a certified medical assistant. She worked in health care roles for most of her life.

Janet’s true love was traveling. She went on numerous trips to explore National Parks. Her favorite places were anywhere that had wild horses. She was fearless and independent in her travels, sometimes bringing along a friend, and other times taking long solo trips to new places.

Janet had a quick wit and a unique sense of humor.&nbsp;

She enjoyed varied hobbies and interests including arts and crafts, photography, and animals of all kinds. Janet will be remembered for being a loyal friend.&nbsp; She always helped out where she could, from keeping small kits in the trunk of her car for the homeless to helping care for her grandchildren.

Janet is survived by children Kristin Jo Lampe, KariLyn Beckman Lampe Waddell, and Rebecca Denise Bowers; grandchildren Alexander Everette Lampe, Jackson James Waddell, Rylee Lyn Waddell, and Mason Cole Waddell, and close friend of 58 years, Pauline Rainey.

Janet was preceded in death by her parents and brother Michael Dean Beckman.

The family would like to thank members of the Iowa Chapter of the ALS Association for their amazing knowledge and support.

According to her wishes, cremation has taken place and no services are being planned at this time. Memorials may be made to the Iowa Chapter of the ALS Association.

Daniel August “Dan” Peterson, 64, of Sheboygan, Wis. died June 16, 2023.

Dan was born Feb. 24, 1959, in Taipei, Taiwan, to the late Rev. Elmer and Dorothy Anderson Peterson.

On Dec. 28, 2002, he married Cindy Hild in Sheboygan, Wis.

He is survived by his wife; two brothers, Tim Peterson and Jim Peterson; daughter, Melissa Konrad; sons, Travis Peterson, Leif Peterson, Andrew Peterson, and Matthew Hild; and 12 grandchildren.&nbsp;

Visitation for Dan will be on Saturday, July 8 at Cadieu Funeral Home beginning at 10 a.m. until time of the funeral service at 11 a.m. with Loren Anderson officiating. Burial to follow at the Mellen Township Cemetery with Military Honors provided by American Legion Post 43.

In lieu of flowers, any acts of kindness or sympathy may be directed to Cindy Peterson.

Daniel August “Dan” Peterson

Steven T. Slocum, 75, of Burlington, died Sunday, July 2, 2023, at Bickford Cottage. Born Dec. 18, 1947, in Burlington, he was the son of John and Maxine Alley Slocum. He married Trudy Slocum on Sept. 1, 1972.

Steve was a graduate of Burlington High School and earned his bachelor’s degree in Accounting at Truman State University. He also served in the Army Reserves. He worked at Case until his retirement in 2002 and farmed his family’s hobby farm until the last few years.

He is survived by his sister, Diane (Ed) Timmerman of Burlington and one niece Traci Timmerman; one daughter Jennifer (Jake) Bailey of West Burlington and four grandchildren, Isabelle Slocum, Brielle Bailey, Bronson Bailey, and Bellamy Bailey.

Steve loved to work on farm equipment and classic cars. Until Brent’s death, Steve’s greatest joy was being on a Late Model racing team with Brent, Mike Hopkins, and their many other friends and crew members. Since his childhood, he loved being outside and taking care of animals. He was an active grandfather, who could be found looking for caterpillars on milkweeds, going on four-wheeler rides, playing a game of H.O.R.S.E. on the basketball court, and taking his grandkids to the park.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Trudy, his brother-in-law Ed Timmerman, son Brent and grandson Jameson Bailey.

The visitation will be 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, July 8 at Lunning Chapel followed by graveside internment in Aspen Grove Cemetery. A memorial has been established for the Brent Slocum Foundation, which will continue its work giving back to the community he loved.

Leonard “Leo” Timberlake, 88, of Burlington, died June 30, 2023, at Danville Care Center in Danville.

Born Feb. 7, 1935, in Elizabeth, Ind., he was the son of Claude and Mildred House Timberlake.

Leo graduated from Burlington High School and served his country in the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1955 during the Korean Conflict. On Feb. 3, 1957, he married Joyce Mumm in Burlington. He was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church.

Leo retired from Champion Spark Plug after 35 years of working production and Tool &amp; Die. He then worked for Deery Brothers for 10 years driving the courtesy shuttle.

Leo was a member of the Burlington Gym. He took part in the Honor Flight to Washington DC and he was a St. Louis Cardinal Fan. Leo loved all sports and played baseball for many years. He loved his grandchildren and proudly supported his grandkids’ sports and school activities.

Survivors include his wife Joyce of Burlington; children Kevin Timberlake of Viola, Ill., Kyle (Beverly) Timberlake of Salem, Ind., Krista (Marty) Janik of Burlington, Tim Timberlake of Burlington, and Darrin (Christine) Timberlake of Burlington; 12 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one sister Shirley Johnson of Des Moines, and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers Samuel “Billy” Timberlake and Gerald Timberlake.

Per his wishes, cremation has been accorded and entrusted to the care of Lunning Chapel.

The memorial visitation for Mr. Timberlake will be 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, July 8 at Lunning Chapel. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery at a later date.

Sharon Huston, 82, of Burlington, died Friday, June 30, 2023, at her residence.

Born Sept. 9, 1940, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Paul and Mary Stewart Wolkenhauer. She married Roger Huston on July 3, 1958. He preceded her in death on Nov. 20, 2014.

Sharon was a stay-at-home mom and homemaker. She attended Harmony Bible Church. She loved cooking and baking all kinds of amazing meals and desserts for her family. She was always collecting recipes and cookbooks. She enjoyed playing board games, card games and word games with her family, especially Boggle, which she and her sister Joyce excelled at and were unbeatable. Sharon loved shopping with her sister Mary, but most important to her was her time spent with her children and grandchildren.

She is survived by her three children; Brian Huston of Burlington, Brad Huston of Maple Hill, Kan. and Diana Huston (Heather) of Colo.; five grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; two brothers, Carl (Mary) Wolkenhauer of Texas and Jerry Wolkenhauer of Burlington; two sisters, Joyce (Jim) Gosney of Burlington and Mary Hoke of Overland Park, Kan. and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother Stanley Wolkenhauer and a sibling at birth.

The memorial funeral service for Sharon will be 11 a.m. Thursday, July 6 at Lunning Chapel. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service. Inurnment will follow at Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery.

Yvonne Delene "Bopnnie" Stodt, 85, died Wednesday, June 28, 2023, while surrounded by family at Klein Center in West Burlington, following complications of Parkinson’s Disease.

Bonnie was born Jan. 3, 1938, in Minneapolis, Minn., the daughter of Lily Amanda Bolz Rettkowski Hawk and Harry Teisman Hawk, Sr. In 1944, she moved to Burlington, with her parents and seven of her twelve siblings. Upon arrival, the children were immediately registered at Messiah Lutheran Church. At that church, Bonnie served as a Sunday school teacher, was in junior and senior choir, and completed her confirmation classes at age 14. Two of her proudest moments were when she graduated to the senior choir and “got her robes”, and when she received her Bible after completing confirmation classes. Bonnie later attended Faith United Presbyterian Church for several years, then First Assembly of God. She began attending Burlington Foursquare Gospel Church more than 35 years ago, and remained a current member.

Bonnie attended Burlington public schools but had to leave in 1955 to help raise her two younger brothers after her mother’s sudden death from stroke. Later, at the age of 44, she returned to school and earned her GED.

Throughout her lifetime, Bonnie was industrious. Her jobs and places of employment included Cloyd’s Bar-B-Que, The Burlington Hotel (Orchard Room), assembling Easter baskets at a Burlington candy factory, Handy Corner (seasonal window paintings), Clean Towel Service, Harrison House, Grier’s Restaurant, Woolworth’s, Doc Bacher’s Drug Store, Home Plate Café, Selby’s, Central Soya, Ross Manufacturing (aka IRC), SCC Cafeteria, J’s Super Value (café head cook), and Area Agency on Aging as the Long-Term Care Committee Coordinator for Southeast Iowa. Bonnie also operated some self-employment ventures, such as a child care service, baking and decorating beautiful wedding and other occasion cakes, and Create-A-Party, which offered services including party planning, catering, balloon bouquet deliveries, and singing telegrams in full costume.

She loved cooking, painting scenery, sketching people, writing stories of her childhood, gardening and crafting. She was the “idea lady” for school festivals, scouting events, church projects, Sunday school crafts, and youth camps. She served several years and “room mother” at Corse Elementary School, twenty years as a leader with Shining Trail Council of Girl Scouts, and helped coordinate and carry-out five of the annual Scout-O-Rama gatherings at Burlington Memorial Auditorium. The totem pole that once stood near the main lodge at Camp-L-Keeta was designed, carved, and painted by Bonnie and a good friend. During her time at the Burlington Area Agency on Aging she acted as Senior Olympics Coordinator for two years and wrote articles for The Hawk Eye about senior activities in the area. She also became a published author when Our Iowa magazine paid to print one of her short stories.It was in July of 1958, while working at Selby’s, that Bonnie met the love of her life, Victor Marton Stodt, Jr. One memorable day, she saw him through a second-story window as he walked to his car. At that moment, not even knowing his name, she said to herself, “I’m going to marry that man!” Five dates later, Mart proposed under the street light at Adams and Division while they were out for an evening stroll. Soon afterward, he was afraid Bonnie had changed her mind when a misplaced wedding gown caused her to be forty-five minutes late to her own ceremony, but on October 4, 1958, she and Mart were married at Messiah Lutheran Church. They spent their fiftieth anniversary in Hawaii and celebrated their sixty-fourth anniversary last October.Of all God’s blessings, Bonnie treasured most her Savior, family and dear friends. She leaves us with wonderful memories, echoes of her laughter, permanent dents from her powerful hugs, and the certainty that, through Jesus, we will be with her again.Bonnie is survived by her husband; their son, Anthony Stodt of Burlington; two daughters, Tracey (Thomas) Bradley of Burlington and Chalee Crawford of Burlington; six grandchildren, Christopher (Julie) Stodt, Alexander Bradley, Nathaniel Bradley, Victoria (John) Hansen, Braden Crawford, and Brianna Crawford; ten great-grandchildren; one brother, Harry Hawk Jr.; and many nieces and nephews.Bonnie was preceded in death by her parents; three infanr brothers, Frederick Rettkowski, August Rettkowski, Myron Rettkowski, Allen Hawk, and Gary Hawk; sisters, Leona (Rettkowski) Maddy Graves, Lillian (Rettkowski) Flynn, Lila (Rettkowski) Bean, Judith Hawk and Harriet Beverly (Hawk) Saben.Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, July 7 at Lunning Chapel where the family will receive friends.The funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, July 8 at Lunning Chapel. Pastor Sam Fratt will officiate. Following the funeral service, cremation will be accorded.Inurnment will be held at a later date in Greenwood Cemetery, West Burlington.A memorial has been established for a Baptismal for Foursquare Gospel Church in memory of Bonnie.
