Southeast Iowa is under a heat advisory until 8 p.m. Thursday night (July 29). The heat index will reach triple digits today and Thursday, according to the National Weather Service. 

The advisory issued by the National Weather Service went into effect at 11 a.m. this morning (Wednesday, July 28). The forecast called for the heat index to reach as high as 105 degrees today and 107 degrees Thursday.

The National Weather Service says the heatwave is dangerous, especially to those without access to air conditioning. Never feel hesitant to dial 911, the weather service said in a statement.

“Heatstroke is an emergency,” said meteorologist Tim Gross.

The advisory covers most of the Midwest, including portions of northeast Missouri, east-central and southeast Iowa, and northwest and west-central Illinois.

The actual temperature will be much lower than the heat index, with the weather service predicting a high of 93 degrees today and Thursday. The extremely high humidity will push the usual dangers of summertime heat to a much more dangerous degree.

“Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances,” Gross said.

In addition, the weather service advises those who work or spend time outside to reschedule, if possible.

“Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heatstroke. Wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing when possible,” Gross said. 

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments. 

While today will continue to stay dry, forecasters say there is a 20 percent chance of thunderstorms Thursday afternoon. That increases to a 40 percent chance of thunderstorms later Thursday night.

Temperatures will return to late July normal after the heat advisory ends Thursday night, with a high of 83 degrees forecast for Friday (July 30). But there is also a 50 percent chance of rain Friday night, and Saturday’s high of 82 degrees brings a 40 percent chance of rainfall.

By Sunday, Aug 1., skies will again be clear, with the high hovering around the 83-degree mark.

Beacon to Publish Weekly Print Edition

Jefferson Street in Burlington ceased to exist for a few hours Saturday (July 17) — taken over by an antique market that attracted vendors and customers from around the country.

A Very Vintage Market, the annual event that went on hiatus last year due to the pandemic, returned with the force of a small city. Thousands of people walked Jefferson Street throughout the day, with some vendors selling out of inventory by 10:30 a.m.

Third Street served as food vendor row, and the F&amp;M Bank &amp; Trust provided perfect shade for shoppers. Street musicians propped up the festival-like atmosphere, lending the market a big event feel.

Vintage Market Attracts Large Crowds

Chas Sagedahl had struggled in his first three starts with the Burlington Bees.

Everything came together for the left-hander in Thursday’s 2-0 win over the Normal CornBelters in the second game of a Prospect League doubleheader at Community Field.

Sagedahl pitched five shutout innings, allowing two hits and a walk, but didn’t get the decision as the Bees (16-15 overall, 1-1 second half) scored both of their runs in the sixth innings.

Still, it was an important outing for Sagedahl, who pitched just 2 1/3 innings at Dallas Baptist this season. He had an 0-1 record with a 10.39 earned run average in three starts with the Bees, allowing 17 hits in 8 2/3 innings.

“It was very big for the confidence, especially struggling here and there the first couple of outings,” said Sagedahl, who pitched for two seasons at Southeastern Community College. “But basically, it was getting back to normal, and hopefully continuing like this the rest of the year.”

“He kept them off-balance, literally, through the five innings he was out there,” Bees manager Gary McClure said. “They really didn’t get good swings off him at all. He had a ton of swing-and-misses.”

Avery Owesu Asiedu had the only hits off Sagedahl, a double in the second inning and a single in the fourth. Sagedahl retired nine of the last 10 hitters he faced.

“He really attacked hitters more,” McClure said. “He got all three pitches for strikes. I think he had good run on his fastball away from hitters, and he was able to go (inside). When we called pitches in, he was able to go inside. He just pitched a really good ball game. I take my hat off to him.”

Lincoln Riley’s triple on a fly ball down the left-field line opened the sixth for the Bees. Reid Halfacre then singled to right field to bring in Riley. Mason Land’s bases-loaded ground out scored Halfacre with the other run.

Garrett Langrell (5-0) got the win for the Bees, striking out four in the last two innings.

Normal’s best scoring chance came in the sixth, when Billy Gerlott tried to score from second base on a passed ball. But catcher Chase Honeycutt made a perfect throw to Langrell covering the plate, and Gerlott was tagged out.

Normal (15-13, 1-1), which edged the Bees for the first-half title in the Great River Division by a half-game, had 11 hits in the first game, nine of which were singles.

Taylor Bruninga (3-0) was the winning pitcher. Simon Gregersen (1-3) took the loss.

ON DECK:&nbsp;The Bees play host to Clinton to start a two-game series on Friday.

NOTES:&nbsp;Bees catcher Jackson Jones got his league-leading 13th double to drive in a run in the first game. … Riley was 3-for-6 in the doubleheader, and made a diving catch on Alex Steinbach’s fly ball to center field for the second out in the fourth inning of the second game. Riley has a six-game hitting streak, hitting .375 in that stretch. … Normal assistant coach Adam Donachie played for the Bees in 2004 when they were affiliated with the Kansas City Royals.

BEES 3-2, CORNBELTERS 6-0: Sagedahl Keeps Normal Guessing In Doubleheader Split

Diavontae Davis has been found guilty of first-degree murder in the 2019 shooting death of Reynaldo "Rey" Villarreal.

Davis, 26, faces a maximum sentence of life without parole and will be sentenced on Aug. 12. He was also convicted of intimidation with a firearm to provoke fear, going armed with intent, and carrying a firearm as a felon.

Davis was arrested in September 2019 in the shooting death of Reynaldo “Rey” Villarreal, 27, of Burlington. Villarreal was attending a party when he was shot and killed by Davis, police said.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the general public was not allowed to attend the trial.

By Beacon Staff Starting tomorrow (Thursday, July 1), the Great River Medical Center has a new name — the Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center. It is not just the name that is different. Great River Health acquired Fort Madison Community Hospital in 2018, which also shares the new name. The renaming of the two hospitals will help the medical entity receive greater Medicaid and Medicare reimbursements. The organization as a whole, however, will still be called Great River Health Systems. The Henry County Health Center in Mount Pleasant, which is now run by Great River Health, will remain a separate entity under the health system's umbrella. Other entities under this umbrella will include the Heritage Park Pharmacy and Heritage Medical Center. There will be three boards associated with the health system. There will be a Great River Health Board of Trustees, a Henry County Health Center Board of Trustees, and a Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center Board of Trustees.

Burlington firefighters responded Wednesday morning to a fire at Farney's in downtown Burlington. Owner Rich Adams told The Beacon a bartender and a customer noticed, at about 8:40 a.m.,  flames and smoke by the front door going up to the stairs. They attempted to extinguish the fire. Firefighters located the fire and quickly contained it. 

Adams said there was no smoke damage to the inside of the tavern and it was a matter of replacing sheetrock and insulation. He added the fire is not thought to be electrical but the cause has yet to be determined. No injuries were reported.

Firefighters Respond To Fire Call At Farney's

Burlington High School salutatorian Hannah Hentzel did not sugarcoat how rough the past year has been.

But she did not hold back on how tough her classmates are, either.

"We have learned we can get through anything,” she said during her portion of the BHS commencement speech.

The graduating seniors received their diplomas Saturday night (June 5) at Bracewell Stadium in Burlington. They wore yellow ribbons on their purple robes to honor a classmate who did not make it to graduation — Bennett Kirk, who took his own life two weeks ago.

“Bennett was such a great friend and will forever be missed,” said graduating senior Tommy Weir.

Despite the emotional wounds, the seniors were all smiles Saturday, some tossing their graduation caps into the air as the ceremony concluded.

Trinity Cheely’s smile was full of relief.

“I turned in my last credit June 1. I barely made it, but I did,” she said.

Cheely has attended BHS entirely online after suffering excessive bullying in junior high and understands the struggle Kirk must have gone through. She has a semi-colon tattooed between her thumb and forefinger. It represents mental health struggles and the importance of suicide prevention. 

“It’s sad. I’ve had those thoughts a lot,” she said.

Cheely was able to work a job while earning her diploma, but not all her classmates were able to graduate on time. She is grateful there are credit recovery courses over the summer. This year’s graduating class was just under 200.

“Usually, it’s bigger, but with the pandemic, a lot of people didn’t make it,” she said. "They (the school district) is pretty good at working with you."

Graduate Caden Lee is looking forward to taking a year off before heading down to Alabama, where he plans on entering trade school to become an electrician.

“It’s a little crazy. I’m seeing the class of '21’s faces for like the last time ever. We’re all going to go our separate ways,” he said.

Valedictorian Subrahmanyam Mullangi remembered happier times during his part of the commencement speech, such as when plastic frogs were unleashed on the Industrial Arts classrooms. He also paid tribute to some of the less-publicized accomplishments of his classmates.

“The volleyball team won the southeast conference this year. CTE (Career and Technical Education) swept at the SCC Southeast Iowa Skills Throwdown and at the Iowa State TSA (Technology Student Association) competition,” he said. “Even in the toughest of times, Burlington Grayhounds prove to be resilient and responsive, regularly achieving in the face of adversity.”

A Tough Year — A Tougher Graduating Class

Friday’s 14-6 win over the O’Fallon Hoots at Community Field was the sixth consecutive for the Bees (6-2), who maintained their one-game lead in the Prospect League’s West-Great River Division.

Burlington had 17 hits, but only two were for extra bases.

“Everyone took quality at-bats, did really well,” said center fielder Lincoln Riley, who had four hits and drove in three runs at the top of the lineup, boosting his season average to .400. “Just kind of carried it throughout the game.”

Every Bee had at least one hit, and Burlington ended the night with seven players in its lineup hitting .300 or better, with three hitters at .400 or better. The Bees are hitting .318 as a team.

“We’re a strong offense,” Riley said. “We’re dangerous, we’re really good.&nbsp;

It’s early, too — we’ve got a lot of games left and I’m excited to see what we can do.”

The Bees trailed 5-3 before scoring 11 runs in their final four innings on offense.

“We kept getting baserunners, putting pressure on their defense,” Bees manager Gary McClure said. “We continually had baserunners and put pressure on. Our guys have done a great job of just putting pressure on throughout the game, and adding runs when we do get in the lead.”

“No one’s nervous when we’re down,” Riley said. “It shows what kind of players we are, how hard we can fight back. It doesn’t matter if we’re down one run or 10 runs, we’re going to play to the ninth inning.”

Riley had an RBI single in the second inning, a single in the sixth, a two-run double in the seventh, and a single in the eighth.

“That was big,” McClure said of Riley, who is going to Eastern Illinois University next season after playing at Southeastern Community College. “He got on base, drove in runs, he just had really good at-bats tonight. He made an adjustment from the other night (he was 0-for-3 in Wednesday’s win at Alton), he didn’t have a great night. But he made adjustments and hit the ball well tonight.”

Austin Simpson had three hits and scored three runs for the Bees. Reid Halfacre, at the bottom of the Bees’ lineup, scored four times.

Tom King (1-0) was the winning pitcher in relief, throwing two scoreless innings. Brady Walker (0-2) was the losing pitcher.

Mediapolis firefighters received hands-on training Saturday during a controlled burn of a house on U.S. 61 within the city limits. A total of 15 firefighters participated in the roughly 10-hour training exercise that began at 7 a.m.

"It's an eye-opener for our younger members," said Andy Kerr, Mediapolis Fire Chief.

The Burlington Police Department is asking the community to keep an eye out for counterfeit $20 bills. Police have received reports of the bills being passed at several locations within the city. The department is encouraging all employers to remind and review their policies concerning money and transactions.

In the photo examples provided by police, an indicator the bills are fake is in the actual text on the bills that reads “United States Copy Money.”

Counterfeit Bills Circulating Around Burlington

One chair sat empty among the 2021 Notre Dame graduates Sunday afternoon (May 30). In it was the photograph of a young boy respectfully propped up on the seat.

The boy, Garrett Brockway, would have graduated with the rest of his classmates Sunday if an accident hadn’t claimed his life in 2013. Brockway was only 10-years-old at the time.

Rev. Marty Goetz approached the chair during the graduation ceremony, laying down an honorary degree that would have been given to Garrett.  With tears, the class of 2021 listened as Goetz paid tribute to the unfailing confidence and enthusiasm of their missing friend.

The class of 32, some of who had been together since kindergarten, accepted their diplomas inside Notre Dame’s Father Minett Gymnasium. All of them had their eyes on the future.

According to principal Bruce Maupin, it’s likely to be a bright one. He proudly announced the class had earned more than $3 million in scholarship money.

“You should be proud of yourselves,” Maupin said.

Zachary Rashid, who graduated from Notre Dame in 2017, delivered the commencement address. He told the students of his mental health struggles since entering Yale and how he has been able to overcome them.

“Don’t let anyone else tell you what you should be,” he said, relating advice he received from a close friend.

Many of the graduates had already placed their focus on the future, even before the ceremony commenced. Raigan Munson, 18, will be joining the US Air Force on her way to college. She can’t wait to get started.

“We’ve worn these caps and gowns like three times, so it honestly feels like we graduated already,” she said with a laugh.

Kalle Orth, 18, started her future early. She already has a job as a CNA (certified nursing assistant).

“I get to travel around Iowa doing my job,” she said. 

Karli Artman, 17, is headed to St. Louis Community College to play basketball and start working on a degree in child psychology. She’s closing another chapter in her life, and it was a darn good one.

Graduating In Life, And In Spirit

With the sun in their eyes, an uncertain but exciting future ahead of them, the West Burlington  High School graduating class of 2021 moved onto the next phase of their lives Sunday afternoon (May 23).

The graduates claimed their diplomas on an outdoor stage on the school’s football field, seeming unaffected by the high humidity.

Lizzy Grobstich, 18, felt a bit stunned after the ceremony. She made the rounds through the large crowd after turning her tassel toward the future, doling out hugs to all who came to support her. Like a lot of her classmates, she already knows what’s next.

“I’m going to SCC for two years and going into criminal justice,” she said. “I’ve just always had a thing for helping people.”

It was the present moment — the one she had dreamed of since childhood — that seemed far more surreal.

“It feels good. Weird. It feels unrealistic, honestly, but a lot has happened,” she said.

Grobstich was referring to the ever-present specter of COVID-19 that forced students into partial online learning this year and last. It’s been a while since a graduating class has had a normal year.

“It was crazy,” Grobstich said. “I couldn’t have done it without a better group of people. We did it together. We made our own happiness out of it.”

Graduating senior Antonia Cherry, 18, is done with school. She’s heading up north to ply a trade she has dreamed of since childhood.

“I want to own my own clothing business. My aunt, who lives in Minnesota, is going to help me with that. She designs clothes,” she said.

Annika Harris, Shelby Ryan, and Hunter Miller were all recognized as valedictorians. Ryan also delivered the senior address alongside Ilianna Murphy.

“We came to school, day in, day out, whether it was virtual, in-person, or hybrid. And we all grew together for years. Now, this may be the very last time we see each other,” they said during the speech.

West Burlington Graduates Look Toward The Future

By Beacon Staff After being called to the Mississippi River Sunday evening (May 23) to recover and investigate a submerged bag found by a fisherman, emergency officials have determined the bag was filled with nothing but sand and discarded construction materials. According to Burlington Fire Department battalion chief Bruce Workman, a fisherman found the sack when he entered the river to cool off. The fisherman pulled a phone out of the bag and, fearing a body might be inside, contacted police. At that point, Workman said, police and fire worked together and treated the scene as a possible body recovery. Beckman’s Towing had to use a cable to pull the bag out of the river due to its weight. “It was that heavy polyester fabric. It had sand, mud, and dirt. The bag was pulled out, placed in a tarp, and detectives found it to be inert construction material. There were a couple of sand tubes in there, which are especially heavy,” Workman said.

Police Find No Human Remains In The Mississippi River Sunday — Only Sand and Construction Materials

A Gladstone, Ill., man wanted for attempted murder is still at large, and the Henderson County Sheriff’s Department is asking the public for help.

Terrance Clopton, 37, is also charged with aggravated battery and has eluded police since a shooting incident on Dec. 31, 2020, in Gladstone. When police arrived at the scene of the late December shooting, they discovered a man who had been shot several times in the torso. The man survived and has not been identified.

Two Gladstone residents — 36-year-old Lora L. Roberts and 41-year-old Larry D. Roberts — were arrested and charged with attempted murder and home invasion. A warrant was issued for Clopton the same day, but he was never arrested.

Clopton is described as standing 5-foot-9-inches and weighing 165 pounds. He has black hair, brown eyes, and a scar on his right hand.

Anyone with information about the whereabouts of Clopton is encouraged to call Henderson County Crime Stoppers at (309) 867-6206. Information reported to Crime Stoppers that leads to an arrest can earn the caller up to $500, even while remaining anonymous.

The Southeastern Community College Blackhawks baseball team will play all their home games at Community Field in Burlington.

“This gives SCC the best home ballpark in the nation because it is a minor league ballpark,” said SCC athletic director Tyler Gaston. “We have full access to this new field, with the luxuries of the clubhouse and press box.”

SCC President Michael Ash also expressed gratitude for the new opportunity.

“I want to say thank you to the coaches for all of the hard work they did to make this happen and also to the Burlington Bees organization for welcoming us with open arms,” he said.

Burlington police said the businesses, located at 117. S. Roosevelt Ave. reported the value of each motorcycle stolen to be between $20,000 and $30,000.

Police responded to the building after the store alarm sounded at roughly 3:30 a.m. Friday. The thieves and the motorcycles were gone by then, but officers did find evidence of the burglary.

More Than $100,000 Worth of Motorcycles Stolen From Heartland Harley Davidson

A Burlington man riding a bicycle collided with a pick-up truck  Saturday night (May 1) at Elm and South Main streets.

The accident occurred shortly before 6:48 p.m., according to the Iowa State Patrol. Reynaldo Lopez, 52, was riding a bicycle east on Elm Street and failed to obey the stop sign. He entered the Main Street intersection was struck by a 2021 Ford F150 pick-up truck driven by 61-year-old Paul Fairlie of Burlington. Fairlie was driving south on Main Street.

Reynaldo Lopez, 52, was riding a bicycle east on Elm Street and failed to obey the stop sign. He entered the Main Street intersection was struck by a 2021 Ford F150 pick-up truck driven by 61-year-old Paul Fairlie of Burlington. Burlington Cyclist Critically Injured After Truck Collision

A rural Danville home was destroyed Saturday night after a grill fire on the deck spread to the rest of the house.

The two residents inside were able to escape safely, though the family cat was not found by firefighters.

The Danville Fire Department was paged to 8997 Sycamore Road at 9:46 p.m. Saturday. Firefighters were informed that the blaze had spread to the back of the house, and mutual aid was requested from fire departments in West Burlington and New London. Danville firefighters arrived on the scene 13 minutes after the initial page. Water tenders from fire departments in Yarmouth, Denmark, and Mediapolis were also called to the scene.

The fire spread into the attic of the ranch-style home and grew quickly due to high winds. Firefighters remained on the scene until 2:46 a.m. Sunday extinguishing hotspots, but the house was a total loss. The house is insured, and Red Cross was notified for victim assistance.

Nine Danville firefighters were assisted by nine New London firefighters, seven West Burlington firefighters, two Denmark firefighters, two Mediapolis firefighters, two Yarmouth firefighters, two Burlington Fire Department paramedics and four Des Moines County deputies.

Two people were allegedly found dead during an early morning house fire Monday (May 3) in Mount Pleasant.

According to KILJ Radio, Mount Pleasant fire crews responded to 1004 Redbud Lane and were still on the scene as of 5:30 a.m. Monday. Smoke could be seen coming from the roof of a single-story home.

Officials have not yet issued a statement.

Two Found Dead In Mount Pleasant House Fire

A Mediapolis woman died Sunday (April 4) as the result of a single-vehicle accident.

Doris Jean Kuntz, 84, was riding as a passenger in a vehicle driven by 82-year-old Charles Leon Kuntz in the area of 150th Avenue and 165th Street when the vehicle went into the ditch.

Des Moines County Sheriff's deputies were dispatched to the scene at 5:47 p.m., where they found the vehicle. Doris was pronounced dead at the scene, though the cause of her death is unknown, pending an autopsy.

Charles was taken to Great River Medical Center in West Burlington for evaluation.

Elderly Mediapolis Woman Dies in Easter Day Traffic Accident

A Burlington man was injured in a motorcycle accident on Saturday (April 3).

According to the Burlington Police Department, Matthew Stephen Garwood, 43, was driving south on Tama Road at about 3 p.m. when he hit his brakes to avoid a deer. Garwood lost traction, and the bike skidded on the side, flipped over, and struck an embankment.

A passerby found Garwood on the roadway and called for help. Garwood was taken by ambulance for treatment at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.
