Betty L. Ward, 78, of Burlington, died Tuesday, July 22, 2025, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born April 5, 1947, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Clarence and Bertha Lack. She married Larry Scott. He he preceded her in death on August 17, 1992.&nbsp; She then married Raymond Ward on June 30, 2012, at the Unitarian Fellowship.

Betty worked at ParkView Care Center for several years until her retirement.

She loved oil painting and was an amazing artist.&nbsp; She loved playing bingo and for years she, along with Ray wintered in Texas and Betty became the entertainment committee for her retirement park.&nbsp; Above all things, her greatest joy was harassing “Hazel”.

She is survived by her husband Ray Ward; children, Roger Dean (Amanda), David Allen, Chadwick Daniel and Bradley Douglas (Wendy); stepchildren, Robert (Dana), Donald, Michelle (Frank), Heather, Chris (Felice) and Michael; several grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband Larry, stepdaughters Tammy and Tina, brother Richard and sister Dixie.

The graveside memorial service and burial for Betty will be 2:00 p.m. Monday, July 28th at Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery. Mr. Richard Johnson will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Des Moines County Humane Society.

According to her wishes, cremation has been entrusted to the care of Lunning Chapel.

Philip Lee “Phil” Getchell, 85, of rural West Burlington, died Monday, July 21, 2025, at his home surrounded by family.

Born February 7, 1940, in Mount Pleasant, Iowa, he was the son of Harold Wayne and Mary Evangeline Getchell.&nbsp; He was a 1958 graduate of Burlington High School.

He married Marjorie D. Stigge on September 19, 1959, at the Prairie Grove Church.

Phil was a lifelong farmer and for the past several years did so alongside his son.&nbsp; He worked for Modern Welding for 34 years, served as a Reserve Deputy for the Des Moines County Sheriff’s Department for 15 years, drove the school bus for Danville Schools for 11 years and worked at 34 Raceway for many years pumping fuel for cars.

He was a member of Peace Lutheran Church.

He enjoyed restoring antique tractors, hunting, fishing and of course farming.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Marjorie Getchell; son Dave (Jennifer) Getchell; daughter Kayleen (Brad) Mehaffy; four grandchildren, Damian (Jordan) Getchell, Chris (Erin) Mehaffy, Nick (Crystal) Mehaffy, Kimberly (Dylan) Graham, Shelby Tolle and Savannah Dowell; nine great grandchildren and brother Melvin (Judy) Getchell.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Wanda Waterman and Sharon Getchell and daughter-in-law Rosalie Getchell.

Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., Sunday, July 27th, at Lunning Chapel where the family will receive friends.&nbsp; The funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 28th at Peace Lutheran Church.&nbsp; Pastor James Zuehls will officiate.&nbsp; Burial will follow at Prairie Grove Cemetery, rural West Burlington.

Kelli McLean, 20, of Davenport, died Friday, July 18, 2025, in Davenport. Born September 5, 2004, in Chicago, Ill., she was the daughter of Eunia Campbell. Kelli had previously worked for Target, YMCA, and a pet store in Davenport. She loved reading, drawing, and music. She was in a band throughout high school. She enjoyed helping people, loved her siblings and her family. Survivors include her mother, Eunia Campbell of Burlington; two sisters, Deasija Benton of Burlington, and Mykah Edwards of Chicago, Ill.; four brothers, Deshaun (Mayrssa) Cummings of Muscatine, Deiontae (Anastasia) Cummings of Cedar Rapids, Michael Edwards, and Makai Edwards; three nephews, Lyndon Cummings, Kai Cummings, and Knox Cummings; three nieces, Julianna Lloyd, Jayda Lloyd, and Janelle Lloyd; three aunts, Juliette, Lavencia, and Franshon; one uncle, Terrance; three cousins, Miacalla, Iris, and Lashonna; honorary grandmother, Connie Boyd; as well as many others. Patricia Ann “Patti” Wood81, 0f Donnellson, Iowa, passed away at 6:20 p.m. Wednesday, July 23, 2025, at Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in West Burlington, Iowa.

She was born on March 26, 1944, in Fort Madison, Iowa, the daughter of Earl and Bernice Gray Schlicher. On November 28, 1964, she married Richard Wood in Donnellson, Iowa.

She is survived by her husband: Richard; two children: Sheri (Drew) McCarthy of Burlington, Iowa, Jody (Jaime) Wood of Fort Madison; six grandchildren: Beth (Andrew) Ita, J.T. (Heather) McCarthy, Jarrett (Morgan) Sykes, Mackenzie (John) Corvaia, Karrigen (Ruger) Smith, Bryce Wood; great grandchildren: Peyton McCarthy, Jensen Sykes, Harper Corvaia, Reece McCarthy, Keegan Sykes and two on the way. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; son: Terry; brother: Jerry Schlicher and sister-in-law: Judy Schlicher.

Patti was a 1962 graduate of Central Lee High School. She and her husband owned and operated Wood Standard Service in Donnellson for over forty years. She was a member of the Donnellson Presbyterian Church. Patti enjoyed sports, as she was an avid Iowa Hawkeye, Southeastern Community College and St. Louis Cardinal fan. Most of all she enjoyed watching her son race and going to families sporting events.

Her body has been entrusted to the crematory of Schmitz Funeral Home for cremation.

A celebration of life will be held from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Sunday, August 3, 2025, at Green Acres Golf Club in Donnellson, Iowa.

Leonard Abraham Hogan, 91, of Niota, Ill., passed away on Sunday, July 20, 2025.&nbsp; He was born on Sept. 15, 1933, the son of Ambrose &amp; Emeline Moore Hogan.&nbsp; He was born and died in the same house on the family farm outside of Niota, Ill.

He is survived by one brother: Patrick “PJ” Hogan of Ft. Madison, two sisters-in-law: Carol Hogan of Eufaula, Ala., Linda (Gene) McEntee of Nauvoo, IL; eleven nieces and nephews that were like children to him: Ron (Amy) Hogan of Ellisville, MO, Don (Jeanne) Hogan of Nauvoo, IL, Judy (Patrick) Hayes of Niota, IL, Tim Hogan of Cape Girardeau, MO, Donna (Kevin) Gross of Jackson, MO, Susan (Tom) Walljasper of Ft. Madison, IA, Debra (Jim) Hurt of Augusta, IL, Brenda (Jeff) Lowman of Nauvoo, IL, Bridgitt (Jerry) Hutson of Niota, IL, Tom (Carla) McEntee of Dallas City, IL, Amy (Matt) Shanks of Ankeny, IA; and numerous cousins and great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers: Ronald “Doc”, Richard “Rip” and David; three sisters-in-law, Joan, Freda, and Marta; one brother-in-law, Earl Varnadore; one nephew-in-law, Matt Hutson; and one great nephew, Thomas Walljasper. Leonard attended the Crescent one-room school outside of Niota, then St, Joseph’s Catholic School.&nbsp; He graduated from St. Joseph's High School in Fort Madison in 1951.&nbsp; He then attended Quincy College until he was drafted into the Army in June of 1953.&nbsp; The Korean War ended when he was in basic training, so after basic, he went to map compiling school in Fort Belvoir, Virginia, and then on to Germany, where he was assigned to the 332nd engineer topography company.&nbsp; He was discharged in 1955 and went to work for the state of Illinois for about 7 years, giving driver's license tests. Then he went back to Quincy College for a year and a half and was able to get a job at the State Bank of Nauvoo where he worked for nearly 30 years.&nbsp; &nbsp;Except for the few years of college and his time in the army, Leonard lived his life on the family farm. He was an avid St. Louis Cardinal fan, a lifelong Iowa Hawkeye fan, and an avid supporter of Western Illinois Leathernecks.&nbsp; One of his favorite pastimes was flying.&nbsp; &nbsp;In the early 1980s, he and his brother Richard learned to fly and bought a small airplane.&nbsp; He also enjoyed boating, having taken a small boat to St. Louis and back. But he got the most enjoyment spending time with family and friends.

Gloria A. Townsend,&nbsp;82, of Farmington, Iowa, passed away at 11:04 a.m. Thursday, July 17, 2025, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.

She was born on December 22, 1942, in Keokuk, the daughter of David and Mamie Johnson Young. She married Harry Townsend, they later divorced.&nbsp;

She is survived by her two sons: Rick (Tami) Townsend of Farmington, Iowa and Randy (Debbie) Townsend of Fort Madison, Iowa; grandson: Matthew Townsend; granddaughter: Brittany (Nick) Bronson; and great grandchildren: Addison, Camille and Jonah.

Gloria A. Townsend

Richard R. Cromer, 82, of Burlington, died Saturday, July 19, 2025, at his home. Born March 28, 1943, in Macomb, Ill., he was the son of Estle Dale and Virginia Eileen Sparrow Cromer. In August 1963, he married LaNee Jean Yocum, they later divorced in 1981. In 1983, he married Roberta Wilkerson, they divorced in 1993. On July 21, 1995, he married Dorothy "Dottie" Ann Davidson in Keokuk.

Mr. Cromer was a lifelong truck driver, accumulating over three million miles, with no chargeable accidents. He retired in 2009.

He graduated from Colchester, Ill. High School in 1961.&nbsp;

Richard was a member of the Burlington Valley Duster Motorcycle Club, Skiowans, Teamster Local 218, Moose Lodge, and a life member of the American Motorcycle Association.&nbsp;

Mr. Cromer enjoyed racing dirt bikes, snow skiing and playing golf. His "claim to fame" was winning first overall in seasonal points in both enduros and hare scrambles in the state of Iowa in 1978. Richard enjoyed watching SCC basketball, WB Notre Dame track meets and motorcycle racing on TV.&nbsp;

Survivors include wife, Dottie Cromer of Burlington; one son, David (Theresa) Cromer of West Burlington; one daughter, Kellie (Jeff) Sloan of Mount Pleasant; three grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; two step-daughters, Karla Saar of Cedar Rapids and Debra (Brad) Bigelow of Apopka, Fla., one step-son, Tony (Sherry) Malone of Eldon; six step-grandchildren; one brother, Dale Cromer of Plymouth, Ill.; one niece; four nephews; and several step great-grandchildren.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, one sister, and one niece.&nbsp;

Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m., Saturday, July 26, 2025, at Prugh Funeral Service, 3940 Division Street.

The funeral service for Mr. Cromer will be 11 a.m. Saturday, July 26, 2025, at Prugh Funeral Service, with Pastor Mike Shea officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.&nbsp;

 </figure>Richard R. Cromer, 82, of Burlington, died Saturday, July 19, 2025, at his home. Born March 28, 1943, in Macomb, Ill., he was the son of Estle Dale and Virginia Eileen Sparrow Cromer. In August 1963, he married LaNee Jean Yocum, they later divorced in 1981. In 1983, he married Roberta Wilkerson, they divorced in 1993. On July 21, 1995, he married Dorothy "Dottie" Ann Davidson in Keokuk.Mr. Cromer was a lifelong truck driver, accumulating over three million miles, with no chargeable accidents. He retired in 2009.He graduated from Colchester, Ill. High School in 1961.&nbsp;Richard was a member of the Burlington Valley Duster Motorcycle Club, Skiowans, Teamster Local 218, Moose Lodge, and a life member of the American Motorcycle Association.&nbsp;Mr. Cromer enjoyed racing dirt bikes, snow skiing and playing golf. His "claim to fame" was winning first overall in seasonal points in both enduros and hare scrambles in the state of Iowa in 1978. Richard enjoyed watching SCC basketball, WB Notre Dame track meets and motorcycle racing on TV.&nbsp;Survivors include wife, Dottie Cromer of Burlington; one son, David (Theresa) Cromer of West Burlington; one daughter, Kellie (Jeff) Sloan of Mount Pleasant; three grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; two step-daughters, Karla Saar of Cedar Rapids and Debra (Brad) Bigelow of Apopka, Fla., one step-son, Tony (Sherry) Malone of Eldon; six step-grandchildren; one brother, Dale Cromer of Plymouth, Ill.; one niece; four nephews; and several step great-grandchildren.Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, one sister, and one niece.&nbsp;Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m., Saturday, July 26, 2025, at Prugh Funeral Service, 3940 Division Street.The funeral service for Mr. Cromer will be 11 a.m. Saturday, July 26, 2025, at Prugh Funeral Service, with Pastor Mike Shea officiating. Richard Cromer

Calvin Edwin Pearsall, 94, formerly of Salem, Oregon, died Tuesday, July 15, 2025, at Addington Place in Burlington.

Born Aug.&nbsp; 3, 1930, in Elsmere, Neb., he was the son of Howard and Helen Addis Pearsall. On Aug. 1, 1950, he married Jeanette A. Sullivan in First Baptist Church in Salem, Ore.. They shared a loving marriage and were just weeks away from celebrating their 75th wedding anniversary.

Calvin graduated from Salem High School and spent his early years working as a shoe salesman. He later took a job at a lumber yard, where he built doors then he drove a truck delivering building supplies across the pacific northwest. He became best known for his work in the construction field, where he spent many years building and remodeling homes.

A long-time member of the First Baptist Church in Salem, Calvin served on the Property Committee, as a Deacon, and helped maintain the church grounds and facilities. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved spending time hunting, fishing, and camping with his family. When he wasn’t outdoors, he could often be found in his woodworking shop, pursuing his passion for craftsmanship.

Survivors include his wife, Jeanette A. Pearsall of Burlington; daughter, Diana (Dave) Cretsinger of Mount Pleasant; three grandchildren, Alex, Amy and Aubrey; six great-grandchildren, Paisley, Ryder, Charlotte, Jaxon, Kipton and Hazel; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter, Jan Wink, brother, Robert Pearsall and sister, Shirley Vogel.&nbsp;

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh Crematory.

There will be no formal services at this time.

Born February 25, 1944, in Burlington, he was the son of Arthur Melvin and Meta C. Wiele Miller. On April 25, 1964, he married Diana Marie Timmerman in Oquawka, Ill. She died on November 20, 2021. Throughout his life, Don worked as a mechanic at Mauthes Garage where he spent about 14 years before opening his own business, Miller Auto Salvage. In addition to his work as a mechanic, he also drove a semi and earned a certificate to transport wind turbines. A passionate racing fan, Don loved spending time at 34 Raceway, where he not only watched the races but also participated, winning many trophies over the years. He also enjoyed trying his luck, whether it was playing Powerball or scratch-off tickets. Survivors include four children, Donna (Kathy Pugliese) Miller of Burlington, Larry (Kim Siefken) Miller of Burlington, Ginny (Cody) Atchley of Danville, and Meta Miller Dixon of Burlington; eleven grandchildren, Patrick, Rachel (Jerod), Brett (Hannah), Bailey (Elizabeth, Kylee (J.T.), Colton, Carah, Calob, Julie, Duane and Drew; 13 great-grandchildren, Eric, Ellie, Elisha, Jameson, Dean, Lorelei, Zahcari, Laylani, Haley, Justin, Aubree, Zane and Averi; and brother, Arthur (Lucille) Miller of Denmark. Don Miller

Roberta Lee Smith, 77, of Burlington, died Friday, July 18, 2025, surrounded by her loved ones at the Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born on Dec. 18, 1947, she was the daughter of Harry A. and Ruby L. Nelson Hopson.

She is survived by her loving husband, Mike Smith, of 25 years, her daughter Angela Wilkerson of Donnellson, Iowa, grandchildren: Jerry, Drew, Samantha (Dustin Walljasper), Alex, Danny, Caleb, Lily and Adeline; four great grandchildren: Axton, Meika, Brantley and Ryker; stepdaughter Breanna Smith, stepson Jason Smith; sisters in-law: Pam Hollister and Darlene Smith. Also surviving are several cousins, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved son Chris Wilkerson, two brothers Lloyd and Jerry Hopson and one brother in-law Bill Smith.

Roberta began her real estate career working for Century 21, Canfield Blacksmith and Swander and for Mosley and Associates. She then worked for many years as a mortgage loan officer in the Quad Cities. She was a rental property owner and a Southeast Iowa Property Owners member. She was exceptionally smart and always very hardworking.

Roberta had many close friends that she spent time getting together with weekly for lunches and dinners. She enjoyed attending many concerts and events, especially Broadway musical performances at the Des Moines and Peoria Civic Centers. She also enjoyed vacations with her husband, going to the movies with her daughter and attending many various activities with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

She loved horses and all animals especially her two cats “Chloe” and “Snoopy” (who she named after her love of Charlie Brown’s dog) and also her beloved cats that had already crossed over the rainbow bridge, “Bob” and “Boo”. She was a strong supporter of the World Wildlife Federation, 4Ocean, and was an organ donor.

“Bert” will be deeply missed by everyone who knew and loved her.

The funeral service for Roberta will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, July 25, 2025, at Lunning Chapel with Darlene Smith officiating. A one-hour visitation will be held prior to the service at 10:00 a.m. at Lunning Chapel where the family will meet with friends. Interment will be held in Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery.

A memorial has been established in her memory for Des Moines County Humane Society or VFW of Burlington.

Mary Kristina "Kris" Rinker, 72, of West Burlington, died Monday, July 14, 2025, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in West Burlington.

Born March 25, 1953, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Charles and Antoinnette Bentler Eggleston. She married George Rinker on August 21, 1981 in Burlington, and together they had four children before eventually separating.

She was a graduate of Burlington High School.

Kris began her career as a bookkeeper at Burlington Bank and Trust. After the birth of her son, Jacob, she chose to stay home and dedicate herself to care for him. Later, she returned to the workforce as an operator at Champion Spark Plug, where she worked for over 15 years before retiring. Kris had a passion for baking and spent 20 years running her own cake business, crafting everything from classic cakes to intricate creations.&nbsp;

In her younger years, she enjoyed bowling and was quite the enthusiast. In her downtime, she loved watching I Love Lucy and Gilmore Girls, two of her favorite shows. She also enjoyed car rides with the windows down, traveling to new places, and treating herself to an ice cream cone. Her vibrant spirit lit up every party and event she attended. But above all, her greatest joy came from raising her children and later helping care for her beloved grandchildren.

Survivors include three children, Matthew (Sophie) Rinker of Burlington, Lucas (Marie) Rinker of Sandusky, Ohio, and Sarah Rinker of Raleigh, N.C.; seven grandchildren, Elin, Aydan, Olivia, Jacob, Tristan, Lillian, and Emma; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Jacob Rinker; one granddaughter, Mia Rinker; two brothers, Tom Eggleston and Jerry Eggleston; and one sister, Judy Mosena.

Visitation will be from noon until 7 p.m., with the family to receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, July 21, 2025, at Prugh Funeral Service, 3940 Division Street.

Mary "Kris" Rinker

Bette Louise Tarrence, 77, of Burlington, died Friday, July 18, 2025, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in West Burlington.

Born June 15, 1948, in Mt. Pleasant, she was the daughter of Philip Ellworth and Florence Lucille Henessee Seager. On May 25, 1968, she married Duane Tarrence at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in Mt. Pleasant.&nbsp;

A 1967 graduate of Mt. Pleasant High School, Bette was an active member of the school band throughout her time there. Over the years, she worked as a secretary for various businesses until her retirement.

Bette was a devoted member of St. Alphonsus Catholic Church. She enjoyed playing Bingo, visiting the casino, and most of all, spending time with her family and friends. She was a dedicated grandmother, always cheering for her grandchildren at their sporting events.

Survivors include her husband, Duane Tarrence of Burlington; two children, Chad (Gina) Tarrence of Burlington, and Carie (Jason) Edwards of New London; three grandchildren, Mikaela, Chance, and Cason, two sisters, Connie Rheinschmidt of Middletown, and Tresea (John) Swan of Olathe, KS; two brothers-in-law, Dale (Cindy) Tarrence of Mt Pleasant, and Dennis Tarrence of NC, and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brother, Robert Seager, two brothers-in-law, John "Gil" Rheinschmidt and Darrell Tarrence.

Memorials have been established for Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice and Special Needs Foundation.

Alex Irish, 34, of LaHarpe, Ill., passed away Sunday, July 13, 2025, near LaHarpe. Alex was born April 7, 1991 in Keokuk, the son of Mark D. and Patricia C. Magee Irish.&nbsp;

Alex was born April 7, 1991 in Keokuk, Iowa, the son of Mark D. and Patricia C. (Magee) Irish.&nbsp;

Alex was a 2009 graduate of Illini West High School in Carthage. Following high school, he received his associate degree in Automotive Technology. He was also a Certified Welder and had his Commercial Driver’s License. He owned and operated his own mechanic shop, County Line Race &amp; Repair. He also drove a semi over-the-road and locally and worked for local farmers. His hobbies centered around his mechanical ability, even in his off-time he could be found working on anything with a motor or helping friends with their mechanical needs. He enjoyed attending tractor pulls, races, playing guitar, riding four wheelers, hunting and just being outdoors.&nbsp;

Alex loved being a father to Aidan and Dylan. He had a soft spot for any kid. Because of his kind and caring nature he would help anyone in need.&nbsp;

Survivors include two sons: Aidan and Dylan Irish; his parents: Mark and Patty Irish of LaHarpe; one brother: Matt (Bre) Irish of Raritan, Illinois, his maternal grandfather: Orval Magee of Raritan, Illinois, and his nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and numerous cousins.&nbsp;

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother: Barbara Magee and paternal grandparents: Theodore “Ted” and Diana Irish.&nbsp;

The family will receive friends from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. Saturday, July 19, 2025 at Banks &amp; Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe.&nbsp;

The funeral service for Alex will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, at the funeral home with Rev. Rick Goettsche officiating. Burial will follow in LaHarpe Cemetery.&nbsp;

His hobbies centered around his mechanical ability, even in his off-time he could be found working on anything with a motor or helping friends with their mechanical needs. He enjoyed attending tractor pulls, races, playing guitar, riding four wheelers, hunting and just being outdoors.&nbsp;Alex loved being a father to Aidan and Dylan. He had a soft spot for any kid. Connie was born in Burlington, Iowa, the daughter of John Hillyer and Lowell “Bud” and Delores Helmick, and throughout her life, called several towns home, including Des Moines, Keokuk, Fort Madison, and again Burlington. Each place added a chapter to her story and shaped the spirited woman we came to know and love.

At just 13 years old, Connie met the love of her life, James Long. After five years of dating, they married on March 6, 1966, in Keokuk, Iowa, beginning a lifelong journey rooted in devotion, adventure, and love.

Connie’s spirit shone through every role she played. Whether healing the sick as a nurse or lifting spirits as a bartender, she lived in service to others. If you knew her well, you knew her as a cheerleader, encouraging you to stand up for yourself, chase your dreams, and believe that yes, you could do it.

She was a creative soul with an entrepreneurial heart, turning her love for ceramics into a business and her gift for organizing into a way to help others find peace in their homes.

With Jim and her children, they would pack up the camper and head away on weekend trips and always had memorable vacations when the kids were little, creating cherished memories across the country. Her love for travel continued throughout her life, sharing joyful journeys with close friends and countless adventures with her beloved siblings. Whether on the road or at home, she found delight in exploring with the people she loved most.

Connie cherished her family deeply. Her bond with her sisters was unwavering, and she held a protective love for her younger brother. She was a woman of many roles, mother, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, and best friend, but through them all, one role remained constant: the encourager. Even on her final day, she found strength to thank her nurses, lifting them up with heartfelt appreciation.

She was beautiful, in the grace of her presence, the warmth of her heart, and the legacy of love she leaves behind.

She is survived by her children; Shawn (Diane) Long, Chris (Mindy) Long and Stacie (Greg) Hart; seven grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren and brothers Kevin (Carrie) Helmick and Kenny Hillyer.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters Candy Ryan and Penny Helmick Kemp.

The graveside service and inurnment for Connie will be Saturday, July 26 at 12 p.m. at Aspen Grove Cemetery. A celebration of life will follow from 1 to 3 p.m. at Joe’s Inn.

According to her wishes, cremation has been accorded and entrusted to the care of Lunning Chapel.

George Edward Miller Sr. passed away peacefully at the age of 93 in Burlington.&nbsp; A proud veteran, devoted family man, and beloved member of his community, George’s life was a testament to strength, loyalty, and unwavering kindness.

George was born in Burlington, Iowa on June 26, 1932, to Ed E. and Dorothy Eunice Miller.&nbsp; He married Carol Anne Crowner on November 2, 1957.&nbsp; They had three children John (Michelle) Miller, Kathy Myers (Ken Floyd) and George (Elizabeth) Miller.

George served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War, entering as an Airman First Class and serving honorably from 1952 to 1956.&nbsp; He was part of the 93rd Bombardment Squadron and the 447th Bombardment Strategic Air Command, where he worked as an Aircraft Maintenance Mechanic, achieving Technical Specialist 7 and Mechanic 5 designations.&nbsp; He proudly earned the Strategic Air Command badge and continued to serve in the Air Force Reserve until 1960.&nbsp; George’s commitment to his country remained a lifelong point of pride.

A talented athlete in his youth, George played baseball and even tried out for the New York Yankees.&nbsp; His passion for the sport continued throughout his life, and he spent many years coaching boy’s baseball, guiding young athletes with his own love of the game.

George was also an avid bird watcher and enjoyed his rituals, especially watching Monday Night Wrestling.&nbsp; He was a loyal fan of both the Kansas City Chiefs and the Iowa Hawkeyes, never missing a chance to cheer them on.

He retired from Champion after 35 years of dedicated work, where he was respected not just for his strong work ethic but for his warmth and positivity.

George had a remarkable ability to lift others up and had a true love for family.&nbsp; He never missed a birthday, always sending a card he specifically chose with a heartfelt message.&nbsp; He reminded those around him that they could do anything they set their minds to, and he truly believed in the potential of every person he met.

To his family, George was the epitome of what a man, father grandfather, great grandfather, soldier, and American citizen should be.&nbsp; His legacy of love, integrity, and encouragement will continue to inspire for generations to come.

He is survived by his children; John (Michelle) Miller, Kathy Myers (Ken Floyd), George (Elizabeth) Myers Jr.; grandchildren, Kristi, Tyler, Rich, Brandy, Breck and Tanner; 10 great grandchildren; sister Sueellen McElhinney; brothers in law, Gene Martin and Gary Ball; sisters in law, Marticia Polewchek and Terri Crowner and many nieces and nephews.

Gary Lee Ripperger, 87, of Burlington, died Tuesday, July 8, 2025, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in West Burlington. Born November 7, 1937, in Melrose, he was the son of Osmond and Marie Callahan Ripperger.

Gary had a very strong sense of right and wrong. &nbsp;He spent the majority of his life serving his country; first in the Army where he was stationed in Korea from 1956 until 1959, and later as a Police Officer. &nbsp;He spent time working as a truck driver and at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant. &nbsp;Gary was very outgoing. &nbsp;He enjoyed talking to everyone and never met a stranger. &nbsp;It seemed that everyone loved him. &nbsp;He cherished his family and spent as much time with them as he could. &nbsp;Gary will be missed deeply but his spirit and memory will carry on through all who love him.

Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Grace; children, Mark (Kelly) Ripperger, Ronnie Ripperger, Lynn Hartsock, and Lonnie (Sandy Elmore) Hartsock; grandchildren, Kaci (Dee) Watson, Nathan Ripperger, Hunter Hartsock, Emily Hartsock, Shelby (Ryan Healy) Hartsock, and Tanner (Jerusha Rice) Hartsock; great-grandchildren, Kayla Watson, Derrek Watson, Monne Watson, Kiley Ripperger, Cohen Touch, Sophie Ripperger, Caleb Ripperger, and Tyler Ripperger; sisters, Marti (Bob) Hawkins, Sally See, and Mary Jane (Roy) Church.

William Douglas Eland, 76, of Burlington, Iowa, passed away on Thursday, July 3, 2025 at Cumberland Pointe Health Campus in West Lafayette, Indiana.

He was born March 24, 1949, in Burlington, to the late Gilbert and Nellie Neff Eland. On May 28, 1969 he married Linda Lowman in Kahoka, Missouri.

He was a proud U.S. Army veteran who served on active duty during the Vietnam War. A member of First Assembly of God, he faithfully volunteered his time as a Royal Rangers commander, Sunday School teacher, and Board Member. He retired after more than 30 years of service as a letter carrier with the United States Postal Service, where he became affectionately known in the community as the “Whistling Mailman.”

William had a lifelong passion for classic cars from the 1950s and '60s. He enjoyed drag racing down the strip and attending countless car shows over the years with his wife. His love of learning and sharing knowledge led him to create fond memories with his granddaughters through “Ding Dong School,” something he cherished during their early years. William’s love for his family was strong.

Surviving is his wife, Linda; two children: Greg Eland and Kimberly (Patrick) Ringler; grandchildren: Zoe Eland, Avery Ringler, Haley Ringler and Sadey Ringler; sisters: Carmen (David) Walsh of Prosper, Texas and Robin (Duane) Gerling of Burlington. Also surviving are several nieces, nephews and cousins.

William was preceded in death by his parents; mother and father-in-law; brothers-in-law: Mark Lowman and Ronald Hutson; sister-in-law Betty Woodley.

Per his wishes cremation has been entrusted and accorded.

Joshua J. Knotts, 32, of Burlington, died Sunday, July 6, 2025.

Born September 13, 1992, in Burlington, he was the son of John Knotts and Tracey Wiley.

He was a 2011 graduate of West Burlington High School.

Josh worked for Jone’s Construction for the last several years.

He loved playing football, even from a young age he had a passion for the sport and enjoyed playing for the Falcons in high school and watching the Pittsburg Steelers. He would never pass up the opportunity to go hunting with his Grandpa Wiley and his uncle Troy in addition to trap shooting and attending gun auctions. He was ornery as a child, and that just increased with age! He was kind-hearted but fearless, a hard worker, independent and frugal and had a heart of gold, however you never had to guess how he felt about you, or anything else for that matter and was VERY protective of his mother.

Everyone loved his red hair and commented on it all throughout his life. He enjoyed spending time at the cabin at Knotts Landing, being on the river and hanging out with his friends. He was no stranger to anyone and loved to socialize and frequent his favorite spots; The Outpost, Roederer’s and Doris’; kicking back, enjoying some drinks and at the end of the night expediting his avoidance of the cops.

He will be truly missed by his mother Tracey Wiley; father John Knotts; brother Bailey Wiley; maternal grandmother Dixie DeJaynes (Keith); Uncle Troy Wiley, Aunt Jackie Capps (Jim); numerous cousins and his HONORARY BEST FRIENDS Dustin Hankey, Zack Taeger, Nathan Babcock, Tyler Wagner, Winston Jones and Cody Thacker.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents that meant the world to him; maternal grandpa Jerry Wiley, and paternal grandparents Jack and Audrey Knotts.

Anthony Kastantin, 57, of Burlington, died Tuesday, July 8, 2025, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in West Burlington.

Tony was born March 16, 1968, in Ottumwa, IA.

Tony was a gentle soul with a great love of family, food, and music. &nbsp;His passion was food and he cultivated that passion throughout his life working as a Chef for over 34 years. &nbsp;He enjoyed music, wrote poetry, and played the guitar often. &nbsp;He liked having deep conversations to understand people and the world on a more spiritual level. &nbsp;Tony had a great sense of humor and enjoyed making others laugh. &nbsp;He looked forward to watching the Hawkeyes play throughout their seasons. &nbsp;More than anything, Tony loved his family and was a wonderful father. &nbsp;He liked being a family man and took pride in his role as a father, husband, son, and brother. &nbsp;Tony's loving and honest personality and his bright blue eyes will be missed deeply; but his memory and legacy will be carried by all who love him.

Survivors include his beloved wife of 25 years, Edith Kastantin; children, Brad Kastantin and Stephen Kastantin; mother, Jane&nbsp;Mondanaro Munn; siblings, Lani (Kevin) McDonald, Jason (Andrea) Munn, Andrew (Sara) Kastantin; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the Iowa Community Care Foundation or the Leukemia Lymphoma Society.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh Crematory. &nbsp;No services have been scheduled at this time.

George Melvin "Jim" Cleland Jr., 88, of Burlington, died Monday, July 7, 2025, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in West Burlington.

Born December 16, 1936, in Oskaloosa, Iowa, he was the son of George Melvin Sr. and Helen Elizabeth Cleland.

He graduated from Burlington High School and attended Southeastern Community College. He served three years in the United States Army in Germany.

Jim was a lifelong farmer. He was known for his love of antique tractors and more recently for the restoration of and being seen cruising around with his beloved wife Shirley in their 57 Chevy.

The funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, July 14th at Lunning Chapel. Burial will be held in Parsons Cemetery, Oakville, Iowa.A memorial has been established for the Des Moines County Humane Society.
