Betty Maxine Downs of Perry, formerly of Burlington, died at the King’s Gardens Campus of the Perry Lutheran Homes on Tuesday morning, September 16, 2025, in Perry.

Born on Feb. 25, 1940, in Moran, she was the daughter of John William and Blanche Dalton Anderson. She was married to John D. Levins, Sr., and they later divorced. On Jan.&nbsp; 15, 1993, in Burlington, she married Donald Eugene Downs. He preceded her in death on Jan. 30, 1995

.Betty was a retired production worker from General Electric in West Burlington. She attended Oak Street Baptist Church, was an avid reader, enjoyed walking, and watching TV.

Survivors include; son, John Daniel (Michele) Levins, Jr. of Burlington; daughter Debora Patterson of Burlington; five grandchildren, Jennifer, Jamie, Jerimiah, Heather, and Roy; numerous great grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; one half-brother John Anderson of Des Moines; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two daughters, Karen and Linda, granddaughter, Sarah, one great-great granddaughter, one brother Bob, and one sister Marge White.

The funeral service for Betty Maxine Downs will be 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 22, 2025 at Lunning Chapel. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 10 to 11 am. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.

Valerie Jean Schwartz, 80, of Burlington, died Thursday, September 11, 2025, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in West Burlington.

Born September 4, 1945, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Wilford and Delores Wolbert Gantz. On September 2, 1982, she married John Schwartz in Burlington.

She was a 1963 graduate of Burlington High School. &nbsp;Valerie later worked at a number of local companies including Grier's Diner, Sylvania Electric Products, Antennacraft, and the Conifer Corporation. &nbsp;&nbsp;

She loved books and could always be found reading. Valerie loved seeing the Budweiser Clydesdale horses and tried to see them in person as often as she could. &nbsp;Animals held a special place in her heart and she had many pets over the years, even an iguana. &nbsp;Valerie also enjoyed collecting Barbie - she had such a collection that she dedicated a room in her home to them. &nbsp;Valerie enjoyed spending time with her husband. &nbsp;They could be found playing the slot machines on the river boat. &nbsp;They even took a trip to Las Vegas to play the slots. &nbsp;They took many vacations to Branson together. Valerie was a great mom. &nbsp;She worked hard to make sure her family had what they needed and she was a great provider for her daughter. &nbsp;Her love and kindness will be missed tremendously. &nbsp;

Survivors include her daughter, Holly Williams; half-sister, Terrie Hawke; nieces, Shawn Perkins, Rhonda Jordan; nephews, Darin Breightensteine and Soren Hawke; and her grand furbabies, Lilith Pearl and Obama.

Valerie is preceded in death by her husband, John; parents, Wilford and Delores; and sister, Ginger Breitenstein.&nbsp;

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh Crematory.

A graveside service for Valerie will be held at a later date. &nbsp;Information will be published when it becomes available.

Memorial contributions are suggested tot he Des Moines County Humane Society.

Monday, Sept. 15, 2025, Mabel Darlene Schillerstrom painlessly and peacefully left this Earth to be with Her Lord and reunited with Her loved ones in Heaven.

Mabel will be most easily remembered as a Hawkeye fan, with family stating her blood ran black and gold. She was most passionate about working in Her flower beds, and She loved sitting outside watching Her birds. Mabel was a very proud American Patriot; She loved Her President and Her country. Her most favorite times were spent with family; Her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and Her precious Aunt Margaret. Mabel was adamant about making the best memories for Her family, She would decorate and cook meticulously for the holidays, making sure every detail was absolute perfection.

Mabel was preceded in death by many loved ones, and is survived by numerous others, as well as friends and others' lives that were blessed by her presence. Her love and legacy will be carried out in the forms that she wished most, Faith, Family, and Love.

Mabel was strong in her wish for no funeral service or celebration of life. She felt as though family should be celebrated and remembered each and every day.

Her final resting place will be at Evergreen Cemetery in Fairfield, Iowa.

Kim Marie Andrews, 69, of Burlington, died Monday, September 15, 2025, at her home.

Born Aug. 16, 1956, in Muscatine, she was the daughter of Henry and Rosie Bender Munson. On Nov. 27, 1974, she married John William Andrews in Burlington.&nbsp;

Kim worked for many companies over the years including, Hope Haven, Vista Bakery, and at Briarwood Estates in Baytown, Texas as a grounds keeper.

Kim's life was centered around the people she loved most, her family. While she didn't take part in many activities, her deep devotion to her family and dogs was the heart of everything she did.&nbsp;

Survivors include her husband, John Andrews of Burlington; three children, Sonny (Julie) Andrews of Burlington, John (Heather) Andrews, II of Phoenix, AZ, and Heather (James) Howell of West Burlington; several grandchildren; two great grandchildren; one sister, Tammy Hessenflow of MO, four brothers, Bud Munson of Mo., Steve Munson of Iowa, Robbie Munson of Neb., and Terri Munson of Mo..

She was preceded in death by her parents and one son, Casey Andrews.

He died on October 12, 1982. She was a graduate of Burlington High School and later attended Burlington Junior College.&nbsp; Alice worked in the copy department at National Research for twenty years and in the engineering department at IAAP. She was a member of the First Congregational Church, Mary Salter Guild, Diaconate Board, Mission Board, Historical Board, Organic Gardening Club, King's Daughters, Burlington Women's Club, Friends of the Library and was a volunteer at the hospital and Klein's. &nbsp; Survivors include her extended family members, church family and the staff and residents at OakView. James Allen "Jim" Imthurn II, 58, of LaHarpe, Ill. died at 6:04 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 11, 2025, at Blessing Hospital in Quincy, Ill.&nbsp;

Jim was born April 18, 1967, in Tucson, Ariz. the son of James and Sharon James Imthurn. He spent his early childhood years in the Tucson area and later moved to the Blandinsville, Ill. area. He graduated from Northwestern High School in 1985. On Aug. 23, 1997, he married Joni Jones at the Abundant Life Church in LaHarpe. She survives.

Jim was employed at Vaughn &amp; Bushnell Manufacturing in Bushnell, Ill., for 16 years and for the past 4 years was employed at Titan Foundry in Hamilton, Ill. He also worked at Oak Grove Hog Barn for the Sheetz Family for 5 years. He enjoyed riding motorcycles, spending time with his family, attending church, playing bags, fishing, harvesting and selling Ginseng roots, and his Thursday night campfires.&nbsp;

Survivors include his wife: Joni Imthurn; three sons: Alex Gooden, Jeremy Imthurn, and Brayden Imthurn; one daughter: Cheyenne Imthurn; three grandchildren: Ashlynn, Avery, and Elliot; four sisters: Julia Pitts, Jennifer Imthurn, Theresa Manning, and Joangela Kiley; and several nieces and nephews.&nbsp;

He was proceeded in death by his parents and a son: Zachary Jones.&nbsp;

Jim’s funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 20, 2025, at the Banks &amp; Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe, with Rev. Rick Goettsche officiating. Burial will follow at the LaHarpe Cemetery.

Ralph L. Faul, 78, of Dallas City, Ill., died at 12:32 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 13, 2025, at his home, surrounded by family and friends. Ralph was born September 24, 1946, in LaHarpe, Illinois, the son of Charles and Alta Ballou Faul Sr. On Nov. 22, 1983, he married Paula Morgan in Dallas City. She survives.&nbsp; Ralph attended Dallas City High School. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War as a Submarine Tender. Following his military service, he worked at Sheaffer Pen, Fort Madison, for a brief period before a 30-year career at Case in Burlington, Iowa. Most importantly to Ralph, he served as a children’s pastor for over 30 years. He was a member of the Victory Faith Church in Fort Madison. He was a train enthusiast and enjoyed swimming, gardening, and especially spending time with his family. Survivors include his wife, Paula, one daughter: Melissa Faul of Pennsylvania; three sons: Dennis (Rebecca) Faul of Tennessee, Scott (Chelae) Faul of Dallas City and Matthew Faul of Dallas City; four grandchildren: Darren (Tiffany), Aspen, Becca and Ethan; one great-grandchild: Ruger “Rooster”, and his siblings: Patricia Faul and Max Faul. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers: Herbert Gene Faul and Charles Faul Jr. Cremation has been entrusted to Banks &amp; Beals Funeral Home of Dallas City.

Dennis Aloysious Menke,&nbsp;81, of West Point, Iowa, died at 9:31 p.m. Saturday, September 13, 2025, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospital in Fort Madison.

Dennis graduated from St. Mary’s Catholic High School in 1961.&nbsp;He married the love of his life, Kate Geers, in 1963.&nbsp;They started their life together moving to Chicago so that Dennis could take a job as a diesel mechanic with the Santa Fe Railroad.&nbsp;No stranger to work, he also took a job with American Asphalt Paving Company while in Chicago.&nbsp;After starting their family, a move back to West Point was in order.&nbsp; In 1967, Dennis continued his work as a diesel mechanic with J.J. Nichting Co. until he purchased a tank wagon business from his father-in-law, Ed Geers, in 1971.&nbsp;Menke Oil merged with Bentler Oil in 1976 to form Jet Gas.&nbsp;&nbsp;

With Kate at his side, they started another business – Crystal Ice – in 1978. Little did they know this was the start of something big.&nbsp;Over the course of his 35 years in the ice industry, Dennis had national influence in improving production and delivery efficiencies.&nbsp;His innovative methods were widely recognized and duplicated resulting in his induction to the International Packaged Ice Association Hall of Fame in 2006.&nbsp;After the sale of the Arctic Glacier ice plant in 2013, Dennis continued to be a mentor to both the ice industry and leaders in his local community.&nbsp;&nbsp;Besides his family, whom he fiercely loved, Dennis was passionate about his Catholic faith, Catholic education, and his community.&nbsp;This passion was evident throughout his life.&nbsp;In 1970, along with Jim Bendlage, he was instrumental in organizing the first St. Mary’s Fall Festival.&nbsp;Dennis was a member of the Marquette School Board in the late-80’s, serving several years as president.&nbsp;Generosity was taught around the kitchen table.&nbsp;This was never more evident than when it became obvious that Holy Trinity Catholic School needed a new grade school building.&nbsp;Dennis and Kate personally funded the marketing efforts for the capital campaign.&nbsp;His daily job through every phase of the project was seeing to every detail. Seeing those children, the future of our Catholic faith, enter that building, always made him smile.&nbsp;His final dream, still in the planning process, was to see the completion of the second phase of construction of the Holy Trinity Catholic grade school in West Point. A memorial Mass will be held Friday, Sept. 19, 2025, at 4 p.m. at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in West Point.&nbsp;A celebration of Dennis’ life will be held immediately following Mass at the American Legion in West Point.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

 </figure>Dennis Aloysious Menke,&nbsp;81, of West Point, Iowa, died at 9:31 p.m. Saturday, September 13, 2025, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospital in Fort Madison.Dennis graduated from St. Mary’s Catholic High School in 1961.&nbsp;He married the love of his life, Kate Geers, in 1963.&nbsp;They started their life together moving to Chicago so that Dennis could take a job as a diesel mechanic with the Santa Fe Railroad.&nbsp;No stranger to work, he also took a job with American Asphalt Paving Company while in Chicago.&nbsp;After starting their family, a move back to West Point was in order.&nbsp; In 1967, Dennis continued his work as a diesel mechanic with J.J. Nichting Co. until he purchased a tank wagon business from his father-in-law, Ed Geers, in 1971.&nbsp;Menke Oil merged with Bentler Oil in 1976 to form Jet Gas.&nbsp;&nbsp;With Kate at his side, they started another business – Crystal Ice – in 1978. Little did they know this was the start of something big.&nbsp;Over the course of his 35 years in the ice industry, Dennis had national influence in improving production and delivery efficiencies.&nbsp;His innovative methods were widely recognized and duplicated resulting in his induction to the International Packaged Ice Association Hall of Fame in 2006.&nbsp;After the sale of the Arctic Glacier ice plant in 2013, Dennis continued to be a mentor to both the ice industry and leaders in his local community.&nbsp;&nbsp;Besides his family, whom he fiercely loved, Dennis was passionate about his Catholic faith, Catholic education, and his community.&nbsp;This passion was evident throughout his life.&nbsp;In 1970, along with Jim Bendlage, he was instrumental in organizing the first St. Mary’s Fall Festival.&nbsp;Dennis was a member of the Marquette School Board in the late-80’s, serving several years as president.&nbsp;Generosity was taught around the kitchen table.&nbsp;This was never more evident than when it became obvious that Holy Trinity Catholic School needed a new grade school building.&nbsp;Dennis and Kate personally funded the marketing efforts for the capital campaign.&nbsp;His daily job through every phase of the project was seeing to every detail. Seeing those children, the future of our Catholic faith, enter that building, always made him smile.&nbsp;His final dream, still in the planning process, was to see the completion of the second phase of construction of the Holy Trinity Catholic grade school in West Point. Michael Wayne Campbell Sr., 76, devoted husband, proud father, adoring grandfather, died Sunday, September 7, 2025, at his home in Altoona, Iowa.

Mike, as most knew him, was born March 19, 1949, in Galesburg, Illinois, to Lindy Morris Campbell and Dorothy Mae (Smith) Campbell and graduated from Galesburg High School in 1967. He married his high school sweetheart, had two children, and moved to Kewanee, Illinois, and then West Burlington, Iowa. The marriage didn’t last, but the Iowa residency did; he spent the rest of his life in cities and towns around the state including West Burlington, Burlington, Mt. Pleasant, Ames, Waterloo, Marshalltown, Pleasant Hill, and finally Altoona.

After a stint as salesman at Bowman’s Shoes in Galesburg and Kewanee, Mike embarked on an arduous professional chapter as a construction worker for Worley’s Asphalt &amp; Paving in Burlington in the 1970s and 80s. He later followed his interest in worker’s rights and political activism to AFSCME Council 61 in Des Moines, where he served in positions of progressively rising responsibility until he attained the post of Associate Director.&nbsp;

At AFSCME, Mike became more active in the Democratic Party in Iowa and had the honor of serving as an Iowa delegate at the 1992 Democratic National Convention in New York City, where he supported nominee Bill Clinton and rubbed elbows with at least one other future president, then Sen. Joe Biden.

Also, during his AFSCME tenure, he met the love of his life, Victoria (Reed) Campbell, and moved to Marshalltown to be with her; they married in 1996. Among the many lifelong benefits of this union for Mike was becoming a stepfather to two young daughters.

Mike eventually began a stint as a later-in-life scholar, earning a bachelor’s degree from William Penn University in 2006 and a master’s degree in public administration from Drake University in 2007. He took his union expertise to the Polk County (Iowa) government as Labor Relations Manager, retiring in 2019 with a send-off at Sec Taylor Stadium, home of the Iowa Cubs minor league baseball team.&nbsp;

An I-Cubs season ticket holder for several years, Mike’s primary baseball fandom lay 340 miles to the east at Wrigley Field in Chicago, where the major league Cubs captivated his attention and annually stomped on his heart until finally winning a championship in 2016. They promptly resumed antagonizing him with sub-championship seasons – but there’s always next year.

Beyond union organizing, politics, and baseball was the true calling of Mike’s life as a family man and, eventually, grandfather to a bevy of children whose affection for him was topped only by his love for and dedication to them.&nbsp;

Mike is survived by his wife, Victoria; two children, Michael Campbell Jr. (Erin) of Burlington and Kristina Campbell (Stacy Cleek) of Takoma Park, Maryland; two stepdaughters, Stacey Spencer and Darcey Veasman (Josh), both of Pleasant Hill; and the aforementioned grandchildren. They are Tara Bryant (Dan) of Wapello, Iowa; Tyler Campbell of Altoona; Talan Kalwishky of Des Moines; Paulina Aguilera, Lucas Hall, and Lauren Johnson, all of Burlington; and Brielle Williams, Marcel Williams Jr., Saylor Spencer, Aspen Keough, Carter Veasman, and Payten Veasman, all of Pleasant Hill; as well as great-grandchildren Caedan Bryant and Aurora Bryant of Wapello. He is also survived by four sisters: Linda Arvanis of East Moline, Illinois, Terrie Saline (Harold) of Galesburg, Cathy Marsh (Lindel) of Moberly, Missouri, and Wendy Hess (David) of Knoxville, Illinois; as well as two sisters-in-law, Bonnie Campbell of Galesburg and Patty Campbell of Knoxville.&nbsp;

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Danny Campbell and Steve Campbell, and a brother-in-law, Harry Arvanis. His remains were cremated.

A celebration of the life of Michael Campbell Sr. will be Sunday, September 21, 2025, from 2 pm to 5 pm at the AFSCME Council 61 building, 4320 NW 2nd St, Des Moines, IA 50313.

Linda Marie Long, 74, of Burlington, Iowa, died Saturday, September 6, 2025, at her home.

Born on July 24, 1951, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Leo and Helen (Hawkins) Long. She married Mike LaVeine and they later divorced.

Linda was a 1969 graduate of Burlington High School. She graduated from the University of Iowa with a bachelor’s degree. Linda was of strong Christian faith and enjoyed her bible study group. She was a member of the Burlington Ski Kats and loved water skiing. Linda worked for her father at Leo’s Yamaha for forty years, until her retirement. She worked in sales, parts, and the office. She enjoyed every part of her job, but loved serving the community and customers the most. They were like family to her. In her younger years, she loved to jump on her motorcycle and go for rides. Linda also loved all animals, but had a very special place in her heart for baby rabbits and her neighbor’s dogs. Her neighbors were also of very high importance to her, and she cared for them as well. Linda was a big supporter of our Veteran Community and loved her country. A true Patriot with a passion to serve others. Of all these things, Linda loved her family most.

She is survived by her sister Patty (Randy) Nordheim of Waukon, Iowa; niece Kris (Ben) Rausch of Waukon, Iowa; nephew Blake (Melissa) Fosaaen of La Crescent, Minnesota; four great nieces and nephews: Lena, Theo, Jeremiah and Rosella Rausch. Also surviving, are an aunt and uncle Judy and Garmon Morse of Bloomfield, Iowa and several cousins.

Her body has been entrusted to the care of Lunning Chapel.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, October 22, 2025, at Lunning Chapel with Pastor Judy Ann Morse officiating. A one-hour visitation will be prior to the service at 10:00 a.m. at Lunning Chapel where the family will meet with friends.

In lieu of flowers two memorials have been established in her memory for the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard or Crapo Park.

Margaret Louise Shafer Slater, 86, of Burlington, died Monday evening, Sept. 8, 2025, at the Klein Center in West Burlington.

Born Dec. 29, 1938, in Aledo, Ill., she was the daughter of Martin Monroe and Evelyn Louise Foley Barron. On Dec. 29, 1957, she married Lyle Shafer in Monmouth, Ill. and he preceded her in death on June 7, 1988. Then, on Nov. 12, 2005, in Gerlaw, Ill., she married Bob Slater.

Louise was a 1956 graduate of Monmouth High School; and was a production worker for Thatchers Plastics for 19 years retiring in 1996. She attended Mediapolis Presbyterian Church and enjoyed her grandchildren, working with flowers, and decorating her home for every holiday.

Louise is survived by her husband Bob Slater of Burlington, Iowa; her children, Craig (Ruth) Shafer, Brenda (David) Newcomb, and son-in-law Larry Marshall all of Mediapolis, Iowa; sixteen grandchildren, thirty-seven great grandchildren, and several great- great grandchildren; four stepchildren, Carla (Lyle) Timmerman and Shelly (Tom) Keltner both of Wapello, Iowa, Rick (Terri) Slater of Grandview, Iowa and Greg (Tammy) Slater of Ft. Shirley Jo Freeman, 90, of LaHarpe, Illinois, passed away at 4:17 a.m. Tuesday, September 9, 2025 at Wesley Village in Macomb, Illinois.

Shirley was born April 24, 1935 in LaHarpe, the daughter of Otis and Wanda (Lorton) Mills. She grew up in LaHarpe and was a 1953 graduate of LaHarpe High School. Following high school, she attended Burlington Beauty Academy. On May 12, 1956, she married Donald W. “Salty” Freeman at the Mount Pleasant Church, near Bentley, Illinois.

Earlier in life, Shirley worked as a beautician before staying home to raise her family. Later, she was a caregiver for many family and friends. She also owned and operated Freeman’s Greenhouse in LaHarpe for 29 years. Shirley enjoyed collecting and refinishing antiques, gardening, canning and cooking. She was a member of the LaHarpe Christian Church. She enjoyed staying busy and will be remembered as a hard working woman.

Survivors include her husband of 69 years, Salty, one son: Tony (Kelly) Freeman of Carthage, Illinois: two daughters: Julie (Larry) Comstock of Stronghurst, Illinois and Cara (Kelly) Baker of Sciota, Illinois; seven grandchildren: Kourtney (Luke) Burling, Kylee Freeman, Tanner Freeman, Lathan (Silas Underwood) Comstock, Jostan (Ashley) Comstock, Mariah (Eric) Huston and Jansen (Jennifer Fredrick) Baker; ten great-grandchildren: Annie, Brooks, Ry, Ronnie, Zoiee, Lynnliee, Noah, Norah, Miller and Hudson.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters in infancy, Patsy and Judy.

The family will receive friends from 9:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, September 13, 2025 at Banks &amp; Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe, Illinois.

Following the visitation, graveside services for Shirley will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday at LaHarpe Cemetery with Rex Huston and Bill Myers officiating.

A memorial fund has been established for the LaHarpe Fire Department or Wesley Village (Pearson South).

Ricky L. Graham, 67, of Burlington, died Sunday, Sept. 7, 2025, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born Aug. 28, 1958, in Burlington, he was the son of Thomas and Sandra Jackson Graham. On March 19, 1994, he married Nancy Heller.&nbsp;

Ricky worked construction throughout his life and later started his own business - Ricky's Handyman Service. &nbsp;He was a hard worker and developed a reputation of being dependable and someone you could count on to get the job done. &nbsp;Ricky looked forward to being outside, whether that was hunting or fishing - he found peace in nature. &nbsp;Family was important to him and he enjoyed spending as much time as he could with his grandkids. &nbsp;Ricky's dedication and steadfastness will be missed but his memory will continue in the hearts of his family and friends.

Survivors include wife of 31 years, Nancy; children, Randy (Rebecca) Graham, Dylan (Kimberly) Graham, Mike (Amber) Spiker, Christina Graham, Shanna (Dion) Graham, Kathie (Ron) Koresko; siblings, Scott Graham, Ronnie Graham, Charlotte Leasure, Sherry (Dave) Groenewald, Rhonda (J.D.) Edward J. Box, 92, of Burlington, died Monday, September 8, 2025, at his home in Burlington.

Born October 2, 1932, in Salem, Iowa, he was the son of Lawrence and Agnes Holtkamp Box. On June 13, 1959, he married Sally Rae Lewis in Burlington.

He was a 1950 graduate of St. John's High School of Houghton, IA. &nbsp;He went on to serve his country with the United States Army. &nbsp;Upon the completion of his service he later worked for over 40 years with Carl A. Nelson as a carpenter.

Ed was a member of SS. John and Paul Catholic Church. He was a very talented woodworker and had many pieces of his work showcased around his home. &nbsp;Ed loved relaxing and playing golf with his wife Sally. &nbsp;He had a great sense of humor and loved making his grandchildren and great grandchildren laugh - Ed loved his family deeply. &nbsp;He will be missed tremendously.

Survivors include son, Mark (Susan) Box of Fort Collins, CO, daughter, Melinda (Glenn) Spiker of Burlington, IA, daughter-in-law, Marilyn M. Thomas Arthur “Hook” Carver, 75, of Biggsville, Illinois, formerly of Monmouth, Illinois, died at home, Wednesday, September 3, 2025.

Tom or Hook as he was known by many, was born September 28, 1949 in Boone, Iowa, the son of Arthur William and Joan Mae (Hillsteadt) Carver.&nbsp; He graduated from Boone High School in 1967 and went on to marry Vaughn Kathleen Welch on September 2, 1967 in Boone.

Tom is survived by his wife of 58 years, Vaughn of Biggsville; one son, Matt (Brenda) Carver of New Richmond, Wisconsin; five grandchildren, Alyssa, Tanner, Cheyenne, Kayla, and Maggie; and four great grandchildren; and one sister, Nancy (Steve) Lewis of Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin.&nbsp; Tom is preceded in death by his parents; one son, Scot in 2008; and one brother, Jeff.

Tom worked for Bowman’s Shoe Co. in Boone, Iowa, Monmouth, and Sterling, Illinois.&nbsp; He then worked at Shoe Warehouse in Monmouth and later Runge and Youngquist Shoes in Keokuk, Iowa.&nbsp; Hook then went on to own and operate Carver’s Hunting and Fishing in Monmouth until he and Vaughn purchased a wholesale bait business that he put on a farm next to Lake Warren.&nbsp; They operated this business until their retirement. &nbsp;

In his youth, Tom was a Boy Scout, eventually earning his Eagle Scout rank.&nbsp; This shaped Tom’s life in many ways.&nbsp; He always remembered the Scout Oath and it created a lifelong love of his country, becoming a true patriot.&nbsp; Tom was a longtime avid outdoorsman, spending many years deer hunting and duck hunting with his sons and friends.&nbsp; He was a member of Honey Creek Duck Hunting Club and Duck’s Unlimited.

Tom was talented in many ways.&nbsp; He loved to work with his hands, and his favorite medium was typically wood.&nbsp; He was able to MacGyver many different things to make them work the way they should.&nbsp; Hook had every tool ever needed for any project and was always willing to lend a helping hand to those in need.&nbsp; Tom was an avid poker player and lover of music although he couldn’t sing a lick.

Ronald Dale Pepmeyer, 69, of Burlington, died Sunday, August 31, 2025, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in West Burlington.

Born November 20, 1955, in Burlington, he was the son of Clarence and Delores Werner Pepmeyer. On August 5, 1978 he married Mary Howie in Burlington. They later divorced after 34 years of marriage.&nbsp;

Ronald graduated from Burlington High School. He went on to attend Southeastern Community College where he earned his Associates of Applied Science degree.

Ronald worked as a project manager, estimator, and construction manager.

Ronald was always working on projects. When it was time to unwind, Ronald would hop on his Harley Davidson with blues music pouring from his speakers. Weekends were made for sports and cars. If there was a NASCAR race on, he was tuned in and he loved attending car shows. He was a die-hard fan of the Chicago Cubs, Bulls, and Bears, and he was an avid fan of Iowa Hawkeye football and more recently the women's basketball team. But above all, Ronald treasured the time spent with his family at cabin or on the river.&nbsp;

Survivors include his two daughters, Amanda (Casey) Smith of De Witt, and Michelle Pepmeyer of Burlington; one son, Ron J. (Molly) Pepmeyer of Tiffin; and five grandchildren, Collin, Layla, Cecilia, Carter, and Addy.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Diana and Nancy.

The Graveside Committal Service for Mr. Pepmeyer will be 2:00 p.m. Friday, September 12, 2025, at Aspen Grove Cemetery. The celebration of life will be held at a later time.&nbsp;

Matt Huddleston, 48, of Burlington, died Friday, September 5, 2025, at the University of Iowa Hospitals &amp; Clinics in Iowa City.

Born December 27, 1976, in Mount Pleasant, he was the son of Gerald Huddleston and Kathy Iserman Huddleston. On May 14, 2005, he married Danielle Stratton in Burlington.&nbsp;

He graduated from West Burlington High School in 1995. Matt worked as a restaurant manager.

Matt was a huge sports fan. He loved sprint car racing, baseball, and football. He was a proud supporter of the Iowa Hawkeyes. He loved music, especially classic rock. One of his favorite bands to listen to was Journey, but it took second place to listening to his boys perform in their high school marching band. Family was everything to him. He loved every moment he spent with them. He loved to travel and often reminisced about a favorite trip to Memphis and the time he went to San Francisco and was able to take a stadium tour for one of his favorite teams, the 49ers. Matt loved to cook and was often inspired to create new and unusual dishes out of whatever he found in the refrigerator. He loved the idea of owning his own restaurant one day and recently talked about buying a food truck. He enjoyed fishing when he was able to. Matt was hilarious. Those who knew him best will remember him fondly as a huge smart ass who always had a bad Dad joke that would make everyone around him laugh.

Survivors include his wife, Danielle Huddleston of Burlington; two sons, Christian Huddleston and Ian Huddleston both of Burlington; sister, Rhonda Huddleston of New London; father, Gerald Huddleston; brother, Anthony "Tony" (Sally) Huddleston of Mt. Pleasant; and niece, Bailey Huddleston.

Rollyce "Rollie" Smith, 97, of Mediapolis, died Thursday, September 4, 2025, at the OakView Nursing Home and Rehabilitation in Burlington.

Born July 18, 1928, he was the son of John and Fern (Mason) Smith. He married Bonnie Sommerfeld in 1947; they later divorced.

Rollie was a lifelong farmer in Yarmouth, Iowa. &nbsp;He was very mechanically inclined and eventually opened Rollie's Bodyshop in downtown Mediapolis. &nbsp;He enjoyed woodworking and was known for the beautiful pieces he produced. &nbsp;Rollie enjoyed being on the water either boating or fishing and enjoyed the peace that it provided. &nbsp;He was a good father and loved his family immensely. &nbsp;Rollie was fun and witty till the end. &nbsp;In his 97 years of life he did everything he wanted to do...and some things that he should not have. &nbsp;Though his charm and spirit will be missed, his memory will remain cherished by all who knew him.

Rollie's family include his daughters, Candy (Dave) Hook and Cindy Phillips; grandchildren, Matt Little, Kecia (Gray) Steelman, and Dusty (Joel) Prottsman; great-grandchildren, Brittany, Kaitlyn, Tyson, Paetyn, and Gavin; and seven great-great grandchildren.

Rollie is preceded in death by his son-in-law, Bill Phillips; ex-wife, Bonnie; and his parents, John and Fern.

There will be no visitation or services per Rollie's wishes.

Rollyce "Rollie" Smith

Betty Joan McCruter, 94, of West Burlington, died Thursday, Sept. 4, 2025, at the Klein Center in West Burlington. Born Feb. 22, 1931, in Shelbina, Mo., she was the daughter of Charley Lee and Florence Luvada Kipper Robinson.

After attending Burlington High School, Betty took classes at the Burlington Business College.

She worked as a locksmith at Shorty Gamble Gun Store for many years and later at the Burlington Northern Railroad shops.

Betty was a member of Union Baptist FGF Church.&nbsp;

She was known for her personal style. She wore beautiful rings, and was always dressed in the latest fashions. She could be seen driving around town in one of her "fancy" cars, such as her Chrysler Imperial or one of her Cadillacs and she loved shopping at Schramm's Department store. She was a strong willed woman who loved to dance, play the piano, and be called "Nannie" by her grandchildren.

Survivors include her son, Lyle A. Robinson of Waterloo; daughter, Linda Joan Robinson of Burlington; two brothers, Thomas Henry Robinson and Ray Luther Robinson, both of Burlington; five grandchildren, Harriet, Lyle T., Lyle R., Lynet Chel'Lease, and Joey; and ten great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Charles L. and Roy Robinson; sisters, Ruby Greenup and Velma Smith; and aunt, Lula Mae.

Family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 13, 2025, at Prugh Funeral Service, 3940 Division Street.

The funeral service for Betty J. Rick Guinard, 67, died Monday, Sept. 1, 2025, at his home in Burlington. Born Aug. 6, 1958, in Iowa City, he was the son of &nbsp;Ivan and Francis Guthrie Guinard Sr. He married Sara Perrine and later divorced.&nbsp;

Rick was an incredibly hard worker. &nbsp;He worked for over twenty years with S and G Construction as a concrete finisher before working a further five years with Case Corporation. &nbsp;Rick went on to work several years with his sons at All American Construction doing carpentry work.

Family and friends were important to him. &nbsp;Rick enjoyed motorcycles, watching NASCAR, fishing, and listening to country music. &nbsp;He was a good mechanic and worked on his car and truck to keep them running well. &nbsp;Rick's grit, determination and personality will be missed, but his memory will continue on through his family and friends.

Survivors include his sons, Rick (Alyssa) Guinard of Cape Coral, Travis (Sylvia) Guinard of Burlington, and Chad Guinard of Burlington; siblings, Ivan Guinard, Jeff Guinard, Tina Meir, Rose Guinard, Christina (Michael) Hazelwood and Tammy Guinard; eight grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Sadly, Rick is preceded in death by his brother, Randy Guinard, and his parents, Ivan and Francis.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh Crematory. &nbsp;A memorial service will be scheduled at a later date and service details will be published when they become available.

Cari Kraft, 63, of Burlington, Iowa, died Sunday, Aug. 31, 2025, at Savannah Heights Nursing Home in Mt. Pleasant. Born on March 15, 1962, in Fort Madison, she was the daughter of Harvey and Glenda Buxton Blint Sr. On May 31, 1991, in Burlington, she married James A. Kraft. He preceded her in death on June 28, 1998.

Cari loved her caregivers; they were like family to her. She loved babies, cats and dogs, coloring, and doing crafts at the facility. She absolutely loved special dinner days like KFC, sushi and pizza delivery. Cari was a very colorful story teller and everyone loved talking with Cari to hear what story she would come up with next.

She is survived by many friends and caregivers that she loved dearly at Burlington Care Center and Savannah Heights Nursing Home. Also surviving is a very special friend, Alicia Anderson of Stronghurst, Ill..

Cremation has been entrusted and accorded to the care of Lunning Chapel.

&nbsp;A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date at Savannah Heights Nursing Home. Interment will be held in Aspen Grove Cemetery.

Charles E. “Ed” Dutton, 82, of Burlington, died Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2025, at Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born on June 11, 1943, in Chattanooga, Tenn., he was the son of Chloe Bea Koger. He married Linda Walker, and from that union, they had two children. They later divorced. On Aug. 18, 1994, in Las Vegas, Nev., he married Joan Gilpin, flying in a helicopter. She survives.

Ed was a United States Army veteran. He worked as a painter for J.I. Case for forty years before he retired. Ed was a thrill seeker who fearlessly enjoyed bungee jumping, riding the slingshot, and was always up for roller coaster rides. He also enjoyed buying new gadgets. Ed was an avid pool shooter. He was a part of the Whitey’s Pool Team and was an Iowa State Champion multiple times. He and Joan enjoyed traveling, taking vacations, and attending their granddaughters’ sporting events. Most of all, Ed loved nothing more than being with his friends and family.

He is survived by his wife Joan; four children: Kim (Jesse) Stanbary of Burlington, Jonathan Russell of Burlington, Tim (Becky) Snyder of Danville, and Tricia (Tim) Atterberg of Johnston, Iowa; eight grandchildren: Tommi, Tanner and Tinley Tracy, Tim Jr. (Taylor) Snyder and Jessica Snyder, Shae, Justin (Courtney) and Jackie Atterberg.

Per his wishes cremation has been entrusted and accorded to the care of Lunning Chapel.

The Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard will render full military rites at 3:00 p.m. Monday, Sept. 8, 2025, at Lunning Chapel, followed by a time of sharing. A one-hour visitation will be held prior to the service at 2 p.m. at Lunning Chapel where the family will meet with friends.
