John Elliott Harris, 86, of Burlington, died Sunday, Oct. 29, 2023, at his home surrounded by family.

Born April 3, 1937, in Little Rock, Ark., he was the son of John Huskey and Obelia Harris. On May 12, 1980, he married Sharon Kaye Shaw in Burlington.&nbsp;

John moved to Burlington with Armour Dial. He then worked for the UA Local Union 125 as a plumber/pipefitter and worked in Aurora, Ill., Muscatine, and Cedar Rapids.&nbsp;

He was a U.S. Air Force Veteran, serving for 10 Years.

John loved cooking to the point he had a BBQ restaurant in Galesburg, Ill., and ran a few taverns over the years, including; Dixie Tavern, John's, and DJ's Bars for a combined 30 years. He had a big heart and was glad to help anyone, from cars to handyman work. John also enjoyed golf and watching Bull Riding.

Survivors include his wife, Sharon Kaye Harris; four sons, John Camper of Tulsa, Okla., Donald C. Hunt, John W. Hunt and Michael E. (Kim) Hunt all of Burlington; two daughters, Tiffany Lynn Harris of Burlington, and Sheila Renee (Lonnie) Jones of Quincy, Ill.; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; three sisters, Evette Harris and her daughter, Shanielle Clorid, Charlotte Johnson, and Doris Mack Ray all of Little Rock, Ark.; two sisters-in-law, Marilyn Milam of Fayetteville, N.C. and Raye Bramlett of Burlington; brother-in-law, DeEdwin Shaw of Burlington, as well as several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother Eddy Mack, and two sisters Brenda Hodges and Ida Rose Brown.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh Crematory.

The memorial service for Mr. Harris will be 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 6, 2023, at Prugh Funeral Service, 3940 Division Street with Pastor Marcus Timmons officiating. Full military honors will be rendered by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard. &nbsp;A time of food and fellowship will be held in Union Baptist Church following the service.

A memorial has been established for his family.

John Elliott Harris

Lester E. Plath, 71, of West Burlington, died Sunday, Oct. 29, 2023, at his home surrounded by family.

Born Aug. 25, 1952, in Centerville, he was the son of Virgil Edward and Ethel Loree Bartusek Plath. On July 21, 1972, he married Debra Sue Long in Burlington.&nbsp;

He worked for J.I. Case and retired after 30 years at the age of 49 to which he enjoyed his retirement very much. Lester was a lifetime member of Union Local 807. He was an avid motorcycle rider and builder, and he loved golf, gardening, and mowing his lawn. Family was extremely important to him and he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. Lester was very proud to have worked hard in his life and built himself the American dream.

Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Debra Sue Plath of West Burlington; daughter, Jennifer (Nathan) Anthony of LeClaire: son, Brian Plath of West Burlington; five grandchildren, Madison (Chane) Anthony, Quinlynn Anthony, Dalton Icenogle, Bella and Lexington Plath; siblings, Robert&nbsp; Plath, Darlene Shankle, Sharon Willits, John (Jacque) Plath, Carol Forrester and Randy (Lori) Plath; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Sandra (Don) Marlette.

A private Graveside Committal Service will be held at Aspen Grove Cemetery.

A memorial has been established for Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice.

Lester E. Plath

Mary Evelyn “Diane” Hostetter, 76, of Burlington, died Saturday, Oct. 28, 2023, at her home.

She was born March 26, 1947, in San Bernadino, Calif.. She married John D. Hostetter Jr. on Jan. 15, 1966, in Bloomington, Calif. He died Aug. 6, 2022.

Diane worked for Midwest Biscuit and more recently in housekeeping for AmericInn.

She was a great mother and cherished her family. She loved playing bingo and cards and going to the casino. She enjoyed watching game shows, Yellowstone and Bones, and crossword puzzles. She loved harassing her boys and most important to her was spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Diane is survived by her two sons; John (Billie) Hostetter of Burlington and Frank (Jennifer) Hostetter of Collins, Ga.; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; her father-in-law John D. Hostetter Sr. of West Burlington; her sister-in-law Pam Bergquist of West Burlington and niece Lydia Bergquist and nephew Brian Bergquist.

She was preceded in death by her husband and son Roy Hostetter.

Per her wishes, there will be no funeral services and cremation has been entrusted to the care of Lunning Chapel.

Burial will be in Burlington Memorial Park Mausoleum at a later date.

May Evelyn "Diane" Hostetter

Carrie Anne Wagler, 66, of Burlington, died Monday, Sept. 25, 2023, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in West Burlington.

Born Aug. 3, 1957, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Don and Anne (Lovely) Hensley. On May 15, 1995, she married Darrell Wagler in Burlington. She was a member of Zion United Church of Christ.

Carrie graduated from Burlington High School. She worked for the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant. She was the executive assistant to the Plant Manager. She retired after 26 years of service.

Carrie enjoyed gardening, knitting and cross-stich. She created many beautiful cross-stitch pieces. Carrie was a collector of Hummel figurines and blown-glass witch’s balls.

Survivors include her husband, Darrell of Burlington; one son Matthew (Jen) Kranzler of New London; three sisters Leanne Hullett of Rock Island, Ill., Mary Beth Lemkau of Muscatine, and Janet (Michael) Bohnenkamp of Stronghurst, Ill., and granddaughter Clarabelle.

She was preceded in death by her parents and sister Virginia Turner.

Per her wishes, cremation has been accorded and entrusted to the care of Lunning Chapel.

The graveside service for Carrie will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 4, 2023 at Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the Des Moines County Humane Society.

Carrie Anne Wagler

Amy Denese Unglaub, 63, of Burlington, died peacefully Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2023, at her home.

Amy was born March 6, 1960, in Sioux City. She is a 1978 graduate of Burlington Community High School and attended Southeastern Community College. Amy worked at Gypsi on Jefferson and its sister stores in Downtown Burlington for over ten years. She was a dedicated member of Bethany Lutheran Church, serving on the Property, Stewardship, Evangelism, Fellowship, Christian Education, and Library committees. She enjoyed crafting, especially needlepoint and fiber art. Amy especially loved her cats, her church family, and her abundance of friends. All who knew and loved her will miss her kindness and generosity.

Amy is survived by her sister, Sheri (Leon) Williams, and her nieces, Stephanie and Hannah (David Spencer) Williams. Her son, John Frederick Willson, and her parents, Evelyn Mae (Bates) and John Frederick Unglaub, preceded her in death.

A memorial service celebrating Amy's life will be held on Thursday, Nov. 9, at 10:30 a.m. at Bethany Lutheran Church (2515 Madison Ave., Burlington). Visitation will be held before the service, also at the church, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Bethany Lutheran Church or the Des Moines County Humane Society.

Miaree M. Ure, 43, of Coralville, formerly of Mediapolis, died Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2023, at the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics.

Born Feb. 29, 1980, in Anamosa, she was the daughter of David and Ann Burke Ure.

Miaree graduated from Mediapolis High School. She earned a Bachelor of Arts double major in Theater and English from the University of Iowa, as well as an associate of Arts degree from Kirkwood Community College in Interior Design. She worked in retail at Dillard’s Department Store in Coralville.

Miaree was a member of First United Methodist Church in Burlington. She loved being with her friends, live music including Pearl Jam, and watching movies. Her favorite flower was the Iris. Her favorite dog was the Beagle. She enjoyed spending time with her fur babies Rosie, Lucy, and Frankie. She loved Halloween, and her favorite color was orange.

Survivors include her parents, David and Ann Ure, of Burlington; one brother Mitchell (Emily) Ure of St. Louis, Mo.; one nephew, Henry Ure; God-brother and God-sister Matt (Sharon) Shaw and their children, Anneliese and Elijah of Mediapolis; aunt and uncle Pat (Diane) Burke of Green Valley, Ariz.; aunt Corene Burke of Elkader; several cousins; and the best group of friends a girl could have.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents Leona and Ray Burke of Oelwein, and Naomi and Ralph Ure of Perry, and uncle Bill Burke of Elkader, and cousin Andrew Larson.

The Celebration of Life for Miaree will be at 10:30 a.m., Monday, Oct. 30, 2023, at First United Methodist Church in Burlington with Reverend Dan Fernandez officiating. The visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 29, 2023, at Lunning Chapel.

Miaree M. Ure

Janece Eddy, 95, passed peacefully from this life to the next on Oct. 24, 2023, with her daughters by her side.

Janece was born July 13, 1928, to Richard and Mae Watson on the family farm in Anita, Iowa.

After high school graduation at age 16, she trained to become a schoolteacher and taught in a one-room schoolhouse in rural Anita. She was proud of her profession and shared many stories over the years with her family.

She met the love of her life at the KP Hall while enjoying the other love of her life, dancing. Roger Eddy, a young soldier who had just arrived in Anita following the war, swept her off her feet. They were married on Aug. 22, 1948.

Shortly after, Janece left teaching and together they owned and operated Eddy's Clothing Store in Anita until retiring in 1984. In 2015, the couple moved to West Burlington to be closer to family while Roger was a resident of Klein's Care Center. They enjoyed 70 years of marriage. Roger preceded her in death in 2018.

Although Janece's heart remained in Anita, she fearlessly embarked on a new life in a new city at the age of 87. She was a true people person and went about making new friends wherever she went.

Being a member of PEO Chapter EZ in Anita, she continued being active with PEO in Burlington, attending meetings of Chapter HU where she was very warmly welcomed. This past summer, she celebrated 60 years in the organization.

She attended Asbury United Methodist Church in Burlington where she frequently volunteered. She especially enjoyed helping at the church's annual rummage sale.

When asked what she would like people to remember about her, she replied, "That I loved people.” And that she did. After becoming a resident herself at the Klein Center, she could be found chatting up a storm with her tablemates at meals, visiting and cheering up other residents, keeping in close contact with her neighbors and friends she left behind in Anita, and sending many cards and letters to those she loved.

Janece was sharp as a tack, fiercely independent, and a life-long learner. She kept up on current events and world affairs and was an avid reader. She also had a passion for shopping, always on the lookout for items for her family whom she loved dearly. She had a positive outlook on life and greeted each day dressed to the nines.

She will be dearly missed by daughters Deborah Winkelman and Julie (Michael) Niehaus; grandchildren Jeremy (Jennifer) Winkelman and their children, Andrew and Tyler; Andrea Niehaus; Stephanie Niehaus and her children, Tessany, Jack, and Gabriel; Michaele Niehaus (Zack Steffensmeier) children, Adrian and Ezra; Nicholas Niehaus; great-great-grandson Emiliano Nunez, and nephews Richard Watson, and Rodney (Barb) Watson.&nbsp;

She was preceded in death by her brothers, William “Bill” Watson and Larry (Rose) Watson; great-grandson, Keegan Niehaus; her parents; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

Cremation has been entrusted to Prugh Funeral Service. There will be a celebration of life for Janece at a later date. A memorial has been established for the Anita United Methodist Church.

Dorothy Irene Gibson, 98, of Burlington, died Wednesday, Oct. 18, 2023, at her home.&nbsp;

Born Sept. 4, 1925, in Keswick, she was the daughter of John &nbsp;and Veva Murial Griggs Husband. On Dec. 4, 1950, she married Arlo "Shorty" Max Gibson in Sigourney. He died Dec. 10, 1990.&nbsp;

She attended school in Keswick, Iowa.&nbsp;In her younger years, Dorothy worked at the local restaurant, grocery store, and meat locker after school in Keswick. After moving to Burlington, she worked as the AAA Safety Crossing Guard for the City of Burlington and later at the IAAP (Iowa Army Ammunition Plant) in production.&nbsp;

Dorothy enjoyed country music and dancing. She was an avid exerciser, even into her late 90's. She enjoyed following her family's activities, the Burlington City Council meetings, and the St. Louis Cardinals. Dorothy had a sharp mind and an outstanding memory. She enjoyed her neighbors and was known as the "pie lady". Above all, she loved her family and always enjoyed the family reunions. She enjoyed attending church services at the New Hope Community Church and was a member of the DAV Auxiliary. Dorothy previously served as a volunteer at the hospital.&nbsp;

Survivors include her son, Lyle M. (Janice) Gibson of Burlington; grandsons, Jason (Robin) Gibson of Overland Park, Kan., Justin (Elizabeth) Gibson of Cedar Rapids, and Jonn Gibson of St. Louis, Mo.; sister, Margaret Herr of Oskaloosa; great-grandchildren, Conner Gibson, Carson Gibson, Jenna Gibson, and Ryan Gibson; sisters-in-law, Donna Husband of Sigourney, Betty Husband of Millersburg, and Jeanette Gibson of Burlington; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, sister, Veva Hermanstorfer, and brothers, Dale, Clarence, Mervin, and Kenneth.&nbsp;

Her wish was to have her body donated to the University of Iowa College of Medicine.&nbsp;

Born April 17, 1942, in Van Buren County, she was the daughter of Melvin J. and Edith H. Weyer Sandy.

She married Howard L. “Porky” Runyon. They later divorced. She then married Wayne Walker. He preceded her in death.

Linda worked for Winegard Co. for many years. She was of the Christian faith.

She was VERY independent. She loved to garden, growing many award-winning flowers and vegetables. She earned many 4H County and State awards, including Grand Champion many times. She loved attending and participating in the Des Moines County Fair.

Linda was a true cat lover, taking in and caring for many cats over the years.

She is survived by her three sons; Don (Dee) Runyon of Hannibal, Mo., Barry (Chris) Runyon of West Des Moines, and Jeff (Judi) Runyon of Waconia, Minn.; seven grandchildren, Aaron (Becky) Runyon, Ryan (Stacey) Runyon, Cody Runyon, Kyle (Katie) Runyon, Zach Runyon, Rachel Runyon and Megan (Alex) Chandler; five great-grandchildren, Katie Runyon, Luke Runyon, Charlie Runyon, Wesley Chandler and Archer Chandler; three brothers, Raymond (Joyce) Sandy of Apache Junction, Arizona, John (Margery) Sandy of Colorado, Iowa and Tim Sandy of Keosauqua.

Cassie was born July 6, 1944, in Muscatine, the daughter of Mike and Vivian Calvert Mills. She was also raised by her step-father, Lloyd Wonderlick. Cassie was united in marriage to Wendell Allen in 1994 in Yarmouth. She will be remembered as a loving person who cared deeply for her family.&nbsp;

Survivors include her husband, Wendell Allen of Yarmouth; children: Bret (Bobbi) Holloway of McCook, Neb.; Michael (Mary) Holloway of Mt. Pleasant; Brad Holloway of Yarmouth; and ViviAnn Allen of McCook, Neb.; 10 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; siblings: Bev Freyermouth of Wilton; Chris (Daune) Schlabaugh of Parnell; Sid (Pam) Mills of North Liberty; and Van (Diane) Mills of Pahrump, Nev.; and many nieces and nephews.

Duane Paul Moser, 72, of Burlington, died Thursday, Oct. 19, 2023, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in West Burlington.

Born Jan. 11, 1951, in Burlington, he was the son of Leslie Paul and Mary Louise Little Moser.&nbsp; He was a 1969 graduate of Burlington High School.

He married Leslie Berry on Oct. 22, 1977.&nbsp; They later divorced.&nbsp; He then married Mary Paula Dameron on May 14, 1988, in Burlington.

Duane worked for US Borax/Dial Co. for 23 years.&nbsp; He then worked for I.A.A.P. for 16 years until his retirement in 2013.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and playing golf.&nbsp; He was an avid St. Louis Cardinals and Denver Broncos fan. He was very sociable, and never knew a stranger.&nbsp; He was the world's biggest flirt and was quite the ladies’ man.&nbsp; His family was very precious to him, and he cherished the time they spent together.

Duane is survived by his wife, Mary Paula Moser of Burlington; his former spouse, Leslie McCullouch of Burlington; five children, Nathan Moser of Burlington, Kristin Moser of Cedar Rapids, Matthew (Casey) Marshall and Sean (Mary) Bragg both of Burlington and Brandi (John) Flynn of Wrens, Georgia; ten grandchildren, Jade, Devon, Aleigha, Gavin, Remy, Noah, Mia, Clarise, Jay and Ramsey; great granddaughter, Emma; brother, Vince (Nancy) Moser and sister Shelly (John) Whooley both of Burlington; his best friend and brother, Jim Standard of Burlington and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Marilyn “Goofy” Warren, 78, died Thursday, Oct. 19, 2023, at her home. Born Dec. 5, 1944, in Memphis, Mo., she was the daughter of Clifford and Dorothy Bechtel Warren.&nbsp;She married Lloyd Huss Jr. on Feb. 9, 1964. They later divorced.

Marilyn loved listening to music and dancing, especially Gaye and the Country Boys and Conway Twitty. She loved being outdoors and enjoyed camping, fishing, and spending time with her kids and her grandkids. Her family was her entire world.

She is survived by her four children; Carol (Eric) Huss of Marionville, Mo., Almeda “Dottie” Huss of Burlington, Lloyd (Kathy) Huss III of Carman, Ill. and Cecil Huss of Burlington; nine grandchildren, Jerry, Trevor, Jacob, Brayden, Johnathon, Rabecca, Timothy, Eric and Colton; ten great grandchildren; one sister, Betty Wheeler of Memphis, Mo.; one brother Clifford Warren of Burlington and several nieces and nephews.

The family would like to send special thanks to her caregiver, Ginger Grisham, who cared for Goofy until the very end.

She was preceded in death by her parents, son Ricky Warren, two sisters, Caroline Wilburn and Darlene Johansmeier, and her special friend of 35 years, Jerry Frasier.

Marilyn Martha Beik, 78,&nbsp;died peacefully on Oct. 20, 2023 She was born on Dec. 22, 1944, in Burlington,&nbsp;&nbsp;the daughter of Wesley and Madeline Beavers Cooper. She married Lewis Allen Beik on March 25, 1965, and together they had two sons, Mark and David. They later divorced.&nbsp;

Marilyn worked as a hairdresser at several beauty salons in the Burlington area and also at Burlington Care Center until she retired in 2015.

She enjoyed playing games and cards with her friends back in the day. She liked doing crossword puzzles and absolutely loved watching TV, mostly sports and especially the Chicago Bears (against both her sons wishes) and of course, the Iowa Hawkeyes and the TV show Survivor.

More than anything else, she enjoyed being with her grandchildren. She was an excellent cook and thoroughly enjoyed having her family over for Sunday dinners.

Marilyn is survived by her two sons, Mark (Mary) Beik of Burlington and David Beik (fiancé Kasey Paris) of Churchill, Maryland; grandchildren, Jacob (Emily) Schwind of Iowa City, Wyatt Beik of Italy, Zoey (Destin) Mayo and Wyatt Beik both of Elkridge, Mo.; great-grandchildren, Kinsley, Kyler and Baby Girl due in March; brothers, Larry (Karla) Cooper of Slidell, Louisiana, Terry Cooper and Randy (Gina) Cooper both of Burlington and sister Melodee Kennedy of Mediapolis and several nieces and nephews.

Melanie Bradley, 56, died Thursday, Oct. 19, 2023, at home with her daughter and husband by her side.

She was born on Jan., 2, 1967, in Burlington to parents Alan Neil and Heidi Bruner.

She married Mark Beverlin Sr. on Aug., 24, 2002. He unexpectedly died in Nov. 2002. She married Marty Bradley &nbsp;Nov. 2014.

Melanie graduated from Burlington High School in 1985. She went on to become certified pharmacy technician by the Iowa Board of Pharmacy.

She was working as a pharmacy technician at Walmart in West Burlington at the time of her death.

She enjoyed camping, kayaking, taking cruises, and attending football games for the Kansas City Chiefs. Her ultimate enjoyment in life was spending time with those she loved. She was always laughing and creating everlasting memories.

She is survived by, her daughter Cassie Robinson and granddaughter Brynn Robinson of Bondurant, husband, Marty, and children, Erin (Jason) Stratton, Nichole Bradley, grandsons; Xander (Emma) Chalupa, Jaxon Stratton, Patrick and Liam Bradley all of Burlington. Other survivors include; one brother, Pete (Norma) Hodgerson of Tucson, Ariz.

She was preceded in death by her parents, first husband, and son-in-law Scott Robinson.

The family will be holding a visitation Monday, Oct. 23, 2023 at Lunning Chapel from 6 to 8 p.m. Funeral service will be held the following day, Oct. 24 at 10 a.m. also at Lunning Chapel. The family welcomes all to celebrate her life following her service with a luncheon at LOFT on Jefferson.

Marilyn Kay Holmes, 70, of Fort Madison, died Saturday, Oct. 21, 2023, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born Aug. 18, 1953, in Macomb, Ill., she was the daughter of James and Goldie Benzinger Mixer. On June 10, 1978, she married Warren Dee Holmes Jr. at the First Christian Church in Fort Madison.&nbsp;

Marilyn worked as a cook for Head Start. Prior to that, she had worked for River City Counseling and long before that at Cassano's Pizza in Fort Madison.

She enjoyed canning and gardening, bird watching, especially Hummingbirds, as well as feeding them. Marilyn also enjoyed genealogy, and ancestry and was always telling her grandchildren stories.

Survivors include her mother, Goldie Pruett of Montrose; her husband of 45 years, Warren Dee Holmes Jr. of Fort Madison; three children, Brian (Diane) Moeller of Keokuk, Christina St. Clair of Montrose, and Andrew Holmes of Fort Madison; five grandchildren, Amanda Gilpin, Olivia, Orion and Christopher St. Clair, and Charlianne (Jesse) Blaise; three great-grandchildren, Theron Blaise, Alexis VanTiger and Dean Blaise; brother, Larry Mixer of Montrose; and long time friend, Kay Merten of Donnellson.

She was preceded in death by her father, step-father, Richard Pruett, two grandchildren, and step-sister, Roxanne Pruett.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

Marilyn Kay Holmes

Roxanne Burkett Argyros, 69, died in Eldora, on Wednesday, Oct. 18, 2023, from complications of ALS. Roxanne was born on Aug. 6, 1954, in Chicago Heights, Ill. to Louis and Wanda Burkett. The family relocated to Burlington in 1964. Roxanne attended Sunnyside Elementary and Oak Street Middle School, before graduating from Burlington High School in 1972. While attending high school, she worked at the Steak-O-Rama restaurant and met a co-worker, Jerry Argyros, who became her husband the following year. They were married in Cedar Falls on May 28, 1973. In May of this year, they observed their 50th wedding anniversary. Roxanne and Jerry worked in the restaurant business for 36 years. They were owners of Jerry's Pizza &amp; Steakhouse in Belle Plaine (1977-1986) and Eldora (1986-2006). Jerry's Pizza &amp; Steakhouse restaurants were always a local favorite! They took great pride in providing good food and good service in a family-friendly environment. During these busy years, they proudly welcomed two sons, Nick in 1978 and Jim in 1980. While Jerry managed the family restaurant business, Roxanne devoted most of her time to raising their two sons and supporting their many activities. In 2006, Roxanne began a second career working at the State Training School for Boys in Eldora as a receptionist. She remained there for 14 years before retiring in Sept. 2020. What brought her the most joy was spending time with her grandchildren, Maxx and Mia, and watching them grow and learn.

Roxanne leaves behind a family who loved her dearly and will miss her always. Husband Jerry and their two sons, Nick Argyros (Angie Hullinger) of Olathe, Kan.; and Jim Argyros (Maagen) and their two children, Maxx and Mia of West Des Moines. She is also survived by her brother, Mike Burkett of Sunrise Beach, Mo., and sisters Brenda Rodgers (Keith) of Lee's Summit, Mo. and Cindy Boothe (Steve Klein) of West Burlington, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Louis and Wanda Burkett and nephew Tanner Boothe. Although living three hours away from her parents, Roxanne was very involved in their care during their aging years. She also adored her nephew Tanner Boothe who passed as a toddler. It's our hope and prayer that these three faces were the first to greet her in Heaven with open arms.

There will be a visitation to greet family and friends from 4 to 6 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 20, 2023, at Creps Chapel, Abels Funeral and Cremation Service, 905 Edgington Ave., Eldora, IA 50627.

Dena R. Willard, 87, of Burlington, Iowa, died Monday, October 16, 2023, at the Wapello Specialty Care Center in Wapello.

Born July 22, 1936, in Toledo, Ohio, she was the daughter of Otis and Myrtle L . Bratt Bridges. She married Alvin Willard on June 20, 1964. He died Aug. 2, 1991.

Dena worked for Champion Spark Plug for almost 30 years, until her retirement in 1999.

She was very accomplished and gifted in crocheting, knitting, sewing and enjoyed sharing her talents with all those she loved. She enjoyed going dancing with her husband, bowling, playing volleyball, playing cards, going to the casino, going out to eat with family, movies, and seeing shows at Players Workshop. She took much pride in attending her granddaughters’ musical concerts.

Dena is survived by her four children; Rick (Anne) Waite of Hanover, Pennsylvania, Susan (John) Van Ness of Genoa, Ohio, Kent Stage of Hagerstown, Ind. and Geraldine (David) Taylor of Burlington; ten grandchildren, Kristina. Eddie, Shannon, Shelby, Remi, Zachary, Katherine. Penelope, Cassandra, and Thorin; 9 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great grandchildren; one sister JoAnn Winterfeld of Swanton, Ohio and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two sons, Edward Waite and Randy Waite, and one brother and one sister.

According to her wishes, cremation has been accorded and entrusted to the care of Lunning Chapel.

Richard James Heston, a true Renaissance man of art, died Nov. 14, 2022, in Burlington. Born in Mason City on March 31, 1955, Richard was the son of Robert and Marcella Heston.

He was a 1974 graduate of Burlington Community High School. Throughout his lifetime he worked at&nbsp;different establishments in the Burlington area and retired from Laura’s restaurant. Richard was a Harley man and rode and owned motorcycles his entire adult life, but art was his life’s passion. He created in all mediums and was commissioned by many individuals and businesses for their&nbsp;logos. Throughout his lifetime he had many creative accomplishments. He was a featured guest on the PBS show “Living in Iowa”. He was credited with inventing the strawberry Twinkie and he was a walk-on&nbsp;extra in the 2018 movie “Sugar” which was partially filmed at Pzazz. His artwork was published in many&nbsp;books and magazines across the United States. He was a member of the Burlington Art Guild and his&nbsp;work was exhibited at the Art Center of Burlington. He also sold art pieces at local downtown shops.

Richard was preceded in death by his entire family. At age 67 he was the last of his line. He is survived by his companion of 23 years Laura Myers of Burlington and many lifelong friends. Richard will be remembered as a kind and generous person who would give a total stranger his last&nbsp;dollar. He was a champion of all animals and gave shelter and love to many that were abandoned. He was fond of saying that he would leave this world knowing that even when his life was hard, he&nbsp;always had love from his parents, family, friends, and animals.

According to his wishes, cremation has been accorded and entrusted to the care of Lunning Chapel. A graveside service and inurnment will be held in Aspen Grove Cemetery Friday, Oct. 20, 2023, at&nbsp; 2:30 p.m. Please meet at the Sunnyside entrance.

Joseph Pierre Roche, 61, of Burlington, died Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2023, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in West Burlington.

Born Sept. 25, 1961, in Burlington, he was the son of Pierre and Betty Roche. He married Nancy Gilbertson; they later divorced but remained close friends.

He is survived by his two stepchildren, David Gilbertson and Jessica Dalton; and three sisters, Diane Poisel, DeLaine Duke, and Dana Malloy.

A celebration of life will be held at 2 p.m. Oct. 21 at the Burlington Gym. A memorial has been established for P.A.W.S. of Fort Madison.

Joan Arlene Carr, 90, of Burlington, died Saturday, Oct. 14, 2023 at Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center.

Born Jan. 6, 1933, in Washington, Iowa, she was the daughter of Clarence and Dorothy Gilbert Patterson.

On Oct. 23, 2015, she married Francis Carr in Burlington.

She worked at Spurgeon’s Department Store for many years. Joan enjoyed reading, drawing, painting, and playing cards.

Survivors include her husband, Francis of Burlington; two daughters Lisa Martinez of Fort Madison, and Lori Wilband of Pensacola, Fla.; three grandchildren Chantel Martinez Chamberlin of Fort Madison, Iowa, and Cory Martinez of Las Vegas, Nevada, and Mark Moritz; three great-grandchildren Arius, Braelynn and Chayde.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and two sisters Clarice and Rita.

Joan Arlene Carr

Robert “Bob” Hand, 68, of Oquawka, Ill., died Monday, Oct. 16, 2023, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in West Burlington.

Born Oct. 11, 1955, in Burlington, he was the son of Edward and Maxine Zippe Hand. He married Fay Adams on Sept. 17, 1977. They later divorced.

Bob was a pipefitter for Local #25 of Rock Island, Illinois for 40 years.

He enjoyed his birds and dogs and loved taking motorcycle rides and nature walks. He was a true outdoorsman. He was an amateur Ham Radio enthusiast who was fluent in Morse code.

Bob is survived by his two children; David (Rhonna) Hand and Jennifer (Evan) Hand both of Oquawka; three grandchildren, Ethan (Anahi) Hand, Alicen Hand, and Riley Hand; great-granddaughter Maya Hand; his two American Bulldogs, Jax, and Brody; his stepmother, Barbara Hand of Burlington; his siblings, Steve Hand, Susan Carper, and Becky Heiniger; step-siblings, Linda Ellis, Jim Howard, Sandy Steele and Sally Miller; half-siblings. John Hand and Julie Conrad and special friend Kathy Monshower of Thompson, Ill.

He was an amateur Ham Radio enthusiast who was fluent in Morse code.Bob is survived by his two children; David (Rhonna) Hand and Jennifer (Evan) Hand both of Oquawka; three grandchildren, Ethan (Anahi) Hand, Alicen Hand, and Riley Hand; great-granddaughter Maya Hand; his two American Bulldogs, Jax, and Brody; his stepmother, Barbara Hand of Burlington; his siblings, Steve Hand, Susan Carper, and Becky Heiniger; step-siblings, Linda Ellis, Jim Howard, Sandy Steele and Sally Miller; half-siblings. John Hand and Julie Conrad and special friend Kathy Monshower of Thompson, Ill.He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Ed Hand, and special friend Eve Cochran.The funeral service for Mr. Hand will be 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 21 at Lunning Chapel. The Rev. Father Jacob Greiner will officiate. Burial will be held in Edwards Cemetery, rural Oakville, Iowa. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service on Saturday.A memorial has been established for the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House.
