Frederick “Fred” Carter, 83, of Burlington, died Friday, Oct. 8, 2021, at Bickford of Burlington.

Born April 6, 1938, in Burlington, he was the son of Harold and Marie Jacobs Carter. He married Carolyn Simmons June 15, 1957. She died May 23, 2017.

Fred served in the United States Air Force. He worked at G.E. in maintenance, retiring after 30 years.

He was very active in Sperry Methodist Church and was a member of the Masonic Lodge. He enjoyed photography, bow hunting, woodworking, listening to southern gospel music, and spending time with his grandchildren.

Survivors include two daughters, Susan (Jody) Shoemaker of West Burlington and Ester (Terry) Bloomer of Hudson, Wis.; one son, John (Jan) Carter of West Burlington; five grandchildren, and one great-grandson.

He was preceded in death by his wife and his brother, Carl Carter.

The funeral service for Mr. Carter will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 14 at Lunning Chapel. Military rites will be accorded by the Des Moines County Honor Guard. Pastor Bruce Smith will officiate. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.&nbsp;

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, Oct. 13 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Lunning Chapel. Masonic Rites will follow at 7 p.m.

William “Bill” Forrester, 79, of Oquawka, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 28, 2021, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in West Burlington.

Bill was born June 6, 1942, in Dekalb, Ill. He was the son of Allen Ray and Evelyn Kelley Forrester. On Sept. 11, 1965, Bill married Gwendolyn “Gwen” Casey.

Bill started in the workforce as a garbage collector. After being injured on the job, he later became a long-distance truck driver until his retirement.

Bill enjoyed working in the garage, working in the yard, watching westerns, and going to yard sales with his grandkids.

Survivors include his three daughters, Nicol "Nikki" (Tony) Rettig of Burlington, Sonia "Cissy" Forrester Hainds of Oquawka, and Billie Jean (Carmella Farrell) Forrester of Chicago; six grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Tim Forrester of New Albany, Ind.

He was preceded in death by both of his parents; his wife; three brothers, David Forrester, Terry Forrester, and Dennis Forrester; and two sisters, Shirley Forrester Lawson and Mary Forrester Murphy.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh Crematory.

Visitation will be on Saturday, Oct. 16 from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m with the family to receive friends at Prugh-Thielen Funeral Home.&nbsp;

Michael S. “Mike” Jarvis, 80, of Burlington and formerly of Mt. Pleasant and New London, died Thursday, Oct. 7, 2021, at Good Samaritan Hospice, Ottumwa, following complications related to open-heart surgery.

Michael was born Feb. 5, 1941, in Iowa City, the son of Everett R. and Alice Shannon Jarvis. He was raised in Mt. Pleasant graduating from Mt. Pleasant High School with the class of 1959. He received a bachelor’s degree from Drake University. During his college career, he attended two semesters on an around-the-world cruise aboard the University of the Seven Seas.

Michael enlisted in the US Army Intelligence Corp., serving a tour of duty in Vietnam. Following his discharge, he was employed as a cost control analyst and engineer at the IAAP. He later worked as an engineer at Exide until his retirement.

On Oct. 10, 1970, he was united in marriage to Rosalie Miller. They divorced in 1995. He later married Lisa Gerdes; they separated in 2008.

Michael enjoyed his many pets (cats, dogs, and horses), collecting art and antiques, world travel, and cheering on the St. Louis Cardinals and the Iowa Hawkeyes.

Michael is survived by two sons, Samuel P. Jarvis (Fiancée Aubrey) of Ottumwa and Jonathan E. Jarvis of Oskaloosa; one sister, Sharon Tozer of Mt. Pleasant; and one brother, Roger Maynard of Fort Collins, Colo.

Cremation has been accorded per his wishes. Lunning Funeral Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements. Services will be 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 15th at Lunning Chapel. Rev. Shane McCampbell will officiate. Inurnment with military rites by the Henry County Honor Guard will be in Forest Home Cemetery, Mt. Pleasant.

Mary J. Farren, 91, of Burlington, died Tuesday, Oct. 5, 2021, at Klein Center.

Born April 17, 1930, in Burlington, she was the daughter of John and Ruth Stack Hynes. She married James M. Farren on June 29, 1957, in St. Patrick Catholic Church. He died Aug. 19, 2008.

She was a graduate of St. Paul High School and attended the Burlington Business School.

Mary was the private secretary to the editor of The Hawk Eye newspaper for nine years.&nbsp;

She was a member of Divine Mercy Parish and a former lifelong member of the Legion of Mary. She volunteered with the reading program at North Hill School, enjoyed playing bridge, and was a die-hard Cubs fan.

Survivors include her two children, Tracy (Anthony Porter) Walding of Burlington and Terry (Dusty) Farren of Danville; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and three nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one sister, Ruthann Westerbeck; and one nephew, Mike Westerbeck.

The Mass of Christian Burial for Mrs. Farren will be 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 8 at St. Paul Catholic Church. The Rev. Father James Flattery will be the celebrant and the Rev. Father Mike Phillips will concelebrate. Interment will be held in Sacred Heart Cemetery.

Jack Patton, 65, of Burlington, died Sunday, Oct. 3, 2021.&nbsp;

Born Oct. 30, 1955, in Burlington, he was the son of Dennis and Viola Mae Dodge Patton. On Dec. 14, 1996, he married Evelyn Lucille Buckley in Middletown.

Jack worked for McCabe's Tree Service for many years.&nbsp;

He enjoyed camping, fishing, working on cars, and spending time with his nephew. He was known as a handyman and liked to make spoon rings and wind chimes out of silver.&nbsp;

Survivors include his wife, Evelyn of Dexter, N.Y.; two sons, Gayle Edward (Laura) Stoneking of Fla. and James Franklin (Becky) Burnett of N.Y.; five daughters, Katrina Marie (Mike) Hammer of Des Moines, Jamie Jean Burnett of Okla., Gayla Louise (Faron) Payne of Okla., Melissa Dawn Agnew of N.Y., and Ashley Myers of Mediapolis; three sisters, Bonnie (Ed) Hartman of Burlington, Sandra (Bruce) Hardy of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Marjorie Bell of Burlington; two brothers, Robert and Jerry Patton both of Burlington; 28 grandchildren; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews.

Heather Nicole Adler, 28, of West Burlington, died Monday, Oct. 4, 2021, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born Oct. 10, 1992, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Robert and Stephanie Engel Schoenewe. On Feb. 29, 2020, she married David Adler at Grace United Methodist Church in Burlington.

She was a 2011 graduate of Burlington High School. She later attended Culver-Stockton College and Southeastern Community College.

She was an assistant manager at Bath and Body Works.

Heather loved her family, especially her boys. She liked to take trips and spend time with friends, go shopping, attend motorsports events, and go to concerts.

Survivors include her parents; her husband; two sons, Chase and Cayden Adler; one brother, Ryan Schoenewe; maternal grandparents, Jim and Norma Engel of Burlington; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.&nbsp;

She was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, Tom and Sharon Schoenewe.

The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 8, 2021, at Prugh-Thielen Funeral Home.&nbsp;

&nbsp;Born March 4, 1939, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Joseph Francis and Bernice Catherine Krabbe Hauser. On Jan 4, 1964, she married Jerry Lee Amenell at St. John's Catholic Church in Burlington. He died May 14, 2006.

Roberta was a stewardess on Ozark Airlines before she married. Later she worked at Mason-Hanger on a line, then worked at IAAP as a contract administrator, retiring after 35 years.&nbsp;

She graduated from Burlington High School in 1958, and attended Southeastern Community College in West Burlington.

She was of the Catholic faith and a member of Divine Mercy Parish where she attended services at St. John's Catholic Church. She was the treasurer of the St. Vincent de Paul food pantry. She enjoyed fishing, playing cards and especially spending time with her family.&nbsp;

Survivors include one daughter, Shayla M. (Carl) Blackburn of Niota, Ill.; two sons, Bradley J. Amenell of Burlington and Dustin (Jody) Amenell of Pleasant Hill; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one sister, Mary Hauser (Franklin) Lewis; nieces and nephews.&nbsp;

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers.&nbsp;

Robert Eugene Barnes, Jr., 67, of Salem, died at noon Tuesday, Aug. 31, 2021, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.

Born Aug. 27, 1954, in Macomb, Ill., he was the son of Robert Eugene Barnes and Catherine Almeada Bollinger Feehan.&nbsp;

Mr. Barnes served in the&nbsp; U.S. Army from July 17, 1972, to Sept. 3, 1976. He worked many years for Heatilator and designed fireplaces.

He was dedicated to the Lord and was ordained. He was crafty and artistic and enjoyed inventing things, fishing, and walks to the creek to find arrowheads and stones. His pride and joy was his beloved dogs.

Survivors include four children, Steven Robertson of Chicago, Misty Zuffa and Adam Bates, both of Oklahoma, and Kenny Wilson of Mount Pleasant; 11 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Connie (Gary) Henry of Carman, Ill., and Pam Scott of Salem, nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, and one sister, Becky Jo Barnes.

Renate E. “Renee” McDonald, 81, of Mediapolis, died Monday, Oct. 4, 2021, at her home.

Born Oct. 22, 1939, in Frankfurt, West Germany, she was the daughter of Arnold and Anna Klemm.

Renee worked at Sheaffer Pen until they closed. She was a member of Harmony Bible Church. She enjoyed crocheting blankets, sewing, and her cat, Cali. She loved her family dearly.

Survivors include two daughters, Amy (Jan McPherson) Williams of Mediapolis and Connie Webb of Davenport; one stepdaughter, Cindy (Brent) Stevens; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one sister, Sigrid Klemm of Germany; one niece; and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, David; one grandson, Delbert; and one brother.

The funeral for Renee will be at&nbsp; 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 8 2021, at Lunning Chapel in Burlington, with&nbsp; Pastor JudyAnn Morse officiating. Visitation will be from 4 a.m. to 6 p.m.

She graduated from Burlington High School then went to Western Illinois University and received her Bachelors of Arts degree.

Megan loved attending church, teaching art, quilting, wood burning, and babysitting.

Lawrence "Larry" Emil Wunderlich, 94, of Burlington, died Monday, Oct. 4, 2021, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in West Burlington.

Born Sept. 8, 1927, in Burlington, he was the son of Emil and Marie Stoermer Wunderlich. In June of 1964, he married Betty Malcom. She passed on Jan. 5, 2016.

He graduated from Burlington High School.

He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving during World War II from Nov. 20, 1945, until March 5, 1947.

Larry retired from Alliant Energy (Iowa Southern Utilities) after 23 years. He had also worked for the Des Moines County Sheriff Department as a transportation officer and correctional officer. He retired in 2003.

He enjoyed ham radio, softball, duck hunting, coaching Little League, assisting with the Cub and Boy Scouts, fishing, and working on home improvement projects.

Survivors include four sons, Brian (Jill) Wunderlich, Brent (Peggy) Wunderlich, and Steve Malcom all of Burlington and Wayne (Terry) Wunderlich of Napa, Calif.; one daughter, Sheryl (Tim) Bubniak of Olathe, Kan.; 10 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Doris Neff; and one brother, Dale Wunderlich.

Visitation will be from 12 until 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 7, 2021, at Prugh-Thielen Funeral Home with family to receive friends following 5 p.m. military rites. Full military honors will be rendered by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Robert W. Higgins, 86, of Burlington, died Wednesday, Sept. 29, 2021, at OakView Nursing Home and Rehabilitation in Burlington.

Services were held on Oct. 4, 2021, at Divine Mercy Parish-St. Paul's Catholic Church with burial in Sacred Heart Cemetery.

Richard F. Burhop, 81, of Burlington, died Tuesday, Sept. 28, 2021, at his residence.

Born Aug. 2, 1940, in Iowa City, he was the son of George and Esta Pratt Burhop. He married Sally A. Rickey on June 24, 1960, at the First Baptist Church in Muscatine.

Richard worked for Hon Industries. He was later the owner and operator of Dicks Kerr-McGee gas station in Muscatine for 16 years.

Richard was a member of the Eagles in Muscatine and Burlington. He enjoyed playing golf and was a long-time fan of the Chicago Bears.

Survivors include his wife; three children, Adam Burhop of Kirksville, Mo., Andy (Diana) Burhop of Burlington, and Amy (Robert) Adams of Aledo, Ill.; one sister, Dorothy Burhop Houseal of Burlington; eight grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Kenny Burhop.

Mary Elizabeth Brown, 49, of Burlington, died Friday, Oct. 1, 2021, at Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born March 12, 1972, she was the daughter of Larry D. and Sheila Y. Russell Thompson. Chris Dowell was Mary’s special companion for 15 years until 1999. She married Randall Brown in 2003; they separated in 2018.

Mary graduated from Burlington High School in 1990, and Southeastern Community College in 1992 with an Associate of Arts degree in accounting. She worked for McGladrey for 17 years, TDT for 10 years, and Martini’s.

Mary was a member of the Art Guild. She loved to paint, do crafts, watch WWE wrestling and criminal shows, camp with friends.

Surviving are her children, Haley (Brad Storie) Dowell of Ava, Mo., Justice Lee Brown, Gavin Brown, Zack (Caitlin) Spindlow and Jordan Brown, all of Burlington; her mother of Burlington; one brother, Rick (Jeanie) Thompson of Unionville, Mo.; one sister, Tina (Darrow) Lillie of Burlington; and one grandson.

She was preceded in death by her father and grandparents.

Johannah "Hannah" Marie Hallman, 56, died Sunday, Oct. 3, 2021, at Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in Burlington.

Born Feb. 7, 1965, at Mercy Hospital in Burlington, she was the daughter of William Lee Hallman and M. Diane Wilson Mansheim. She married Charles Burm on Dec. 31, 2007, in Chicago, Ill.

Hannah graduated from Notre Dame High School in Burlington in 1983 and earned a Bachelor of Arts in journalism and advertising from Western Illinois University in 1991.

She previously worked for The Hawk Eye newspaper and also authored articles in various publications. Hannah wrote the first booklet on von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) syndrome, which was used to inform families affected with the disease. She and her family were also supporters of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI).&nbsp;

She was certified as a peer support specialist providing mental health services, most recently at Hope Haven Area Development Center at the&nbsp; Lee County Drop-In Center.

She was a member of Divine Mercy Parish in West Burlington and founded the parish's Saint Dymphna Guild, a faith-based mental health support group honoring the patroness saint of those afflicted with nervous and emotional illness. She enjoyed reading, art and design, shopping, travel, and visiting with family and friends.&nbsp;

Survivors include her husband, Charles of Burlington; daughter, Samantha Nordstrom of Des Moines; parents, Diane and Robert Mansheim of Burlington; three sisters, Julie Cook of Omaha, Neb., Heidi Hallman (Tim) Brown of Burlington, and Amanda (Rodney) Brent of Gladstone, Ill.; three brothers, Robert (Kimberlee) Mansheim and Joseph Mansheim both of Fort Madison and Edward (Amanda) Mansheim of Burlington; five aunts; 18 nieces and nephews; seven great-nieces and great-nephews; and many cousins.

She was preceded in death by her father; two brothers, Curtis Anthony Hallman and Matthew William Hallman; grandparents; and two aunts.

Peggy Lea Besaw, 62, of Burlington, died Saturday, Oct. 2, at Keokuk Area Hospital.

Born Nov. 7, 1958, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Dorsey Ruben and Lola Frances Unglesbee Heldt.

Peggy graduated from Burlington High School in 1977 and worked in player services at Catfish Bend Casino.

Peggy loved crafting, bowling, face painting, and watching the St. Louis Cardinals. For her birthday last year, she visited the Field of Dreams. In high school, she enjoyed playing basketball. She loved all her nieces and nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.&nbsp;

Survivors include four sisters, Linda Johnson of Burlington, Karen Killoren of Hamilton, Ill., Judy Griffith of Milwaukee, and Nancy Aldrich of Washington, Iowa; stepson, Michael (Tiffeny) Besaw of Kansas; one grandson; nieces and nephews; great-nieces, and great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two stepsons; one stepdaughter; one sister Barb; and her grandparents.

Diane Dent, 77, of Burlington, died Sunday, Oct. 3, 2021, at Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in West Burlington.

Born Nov. 4, 1943, in Tulsa, Okla., she was the daughter of Ralph and Dorothy Mabel Lysettia Crew Morris. On April 21, 1962, and again in April 1971, she married David Henry Dent. He died Sept. 22, 2001.

Diane was a secretary to the City Clerk in Corydon for over 35 years.

She was of the Methodist faith. She enjoyed playing bingo and cards and watching TV crime shows. She loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include two daughters, Lisa (Roger) Cook of Hillsboro and Julie (Jim) Carpenter of Burlington; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, one daughter, Denise Stark, one brother, Richard Morris, and two grandchildren.

Stephen K. Bice, 70, of Muscatine, died Monday, Sept.&nbsp; 27, 2021 at his home.

Born Jan. 9, 1951, in LaHarpe, Ill., he was the son of Robert Krieg and Audrey Grace Williams Bice. He married Barbara Meier in 1989. They later divorced. He married Brenda J. Hill June 2, 2002.

Stephen attended Burlington High School, served in the military, attended Southeastern Community College and received his Bachelor of Arts degree from University of Iowa.&nbsp;

He then re-entered the Army as an officer serving during the Vietnam War in Korea. He was an analyst for the Department of the Army his entire career.

Stephen had a vast knowledge of military history. He was a great cook and loved spending time with his family and friends.

Survivors include his wife; two brothers, Bill (Jacque) Bice of Burlington and Mike (Lesa) Bice of Tulsa, Okla.; three sisters, Betsy Smith and Barb (Alan) Gerst both of Burlington and Margie (Nick) Reed of Parkersburg, WVa.; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Kenneth Bice.

The funeral with military rites for Mr. Bice will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 1, at Lunning Chapel in Burlington with Chaplain Susan Bantz officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery in Burlington. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.

Stephen K. Bice, 70, of Muscatine, died Monday, Sept.&nbsp; 27, 2021 at his home.Born Jan. 9, 1951, in LaHarpe, Ill., he was the son of Robert Krieg and Audrey Grace Williams Bice. He married Barbara Meier in 1989. They later divorced. He married Brenda J. Hill June 2, 2002.Stephen attended Burlington High School, served in the military, attended Southeastern Community College and received his Bachelor of Arts degree from University of Iowa.&nbsp;He then re-entered the Army as an officer serving during the Vietnam War in Korea. Bonnie Lou Huffman, 85, of Burlington, died at 5:28 AM, Monday, Sept. 27, 2021, at her home.

Born Nov. 16, 1935, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Warren and Lucy Warth Kendall. In March of 1975, she married Mylo Huffman. He passed away in December of 1979.

She worked as a case packer at US Borax for 35 years until her retirement.

She graduated from the Iowa School for the Deaf in 1958.

Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery at a later date.Cremation will be entrusted to the Prugh Crematory.In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for the American Red Cross and the Des Moines County Humane Society.
