Justin A. Mark, 43, of West Des Moines, died Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2024. Justin passed away at the University of Iowa Hospital after a courageous battle with Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis, a rare liver disease.

Justin was born to David Mark and Margaret “Margie” Deggendorf James on Nov. 22, 1980, in Burlington. Justin graduated from Burlington High School.

He worked for Kreg Tool in West Des Moines. Justin loved biking, baseball, and all things outdoors. During his time working at Reimen Gardens, he developed a passion for landscaping and gardening. He loved going to the local farmers markets. His family would often come to him for advice on their projects and he talked about someday having his own house with a yard to design. Every year Justin looked forward to the Mark Men’s Backbone Fishing Trip where he spent less time fishing and more time connecting with his Dad, brother, uncle, and brothers-in-law. Justin had a quiet nature but loved spending time with his many friends and large family. He had an infectious smile that would light up a room. He was an exceptional listener, full of joy and he spread his optimism to those around him. Justin was a walking jukebox and often interjected a funny or poignant song lyric into conversations. He had a biting sense of humor and loved to laugh with his family and friends. Justin loved travel and adventure: skydiving, whitewater rafting, and, after surviving gallbladder cancer, Justin threw his bike in the back of his car and drove around to different states he was interested in living. He would camp in his car at night and go exploring during the day. He ended up moving to Salt Lake City for a year before finding his way back home.

Justin was exceedingly generous and kind-hearted; to know him was to love him. He was loved deeply and will be greatly missed.

He is survived by his father David (Laura) Mark of North Carolina; Step-father Mike James of Sperry; siblings Jason (Christine) Mark of Arizona, Karen (Jamie) Brookhart of Muscatine, Linda Vaughn (Jerome Allen) of Altoona and Susan (Tim) McCabe of North Liberty, step-sister Jenna (Spencer) Kalk of North Carolina; nieces and nephews Corrin (Matt) Noel, Christine (Marcus) Beck, Lucy, Grace, Lincoln, Gavin, &amp; Vaughn Brookhart, Austin Selby, Sebastian Vaughn, Grayson Allen, Caitlin &amp; Jaden McCabe, Kylee, Avery, Nora, Jackson &amp; Spencer Kalk; Uncle Mike and Aunt Janet Mark of Illinois, Aunt Helen Scott of Burlington; cousins Tony (Joanna) Scott, Mark Scott, Sara Mark, Rachel Mark and great nieces Addison &amp; Olivia Noel and numerous other cousins and aunts and uncles.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Margie James, brother, Brian Mark and his godparents, Uncle Bob and Aunt Sharon Deggendorf.

Visitation will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 6, at Lunning Chapel.

The funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery on Monday.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Justin’s name to Reiman Gardens at

Iowa State University, where Justin loved working to help inspire an appreciation of the beauty of nature.

Dorothy Ziglar French, 102, of Burlington, died Oct. 3, 2024, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in West Burlington.

Dorothy had many talents. She was musical and played the xylophone and recorder. She loved flowers and grew many varieties in her yard and always had a fresh bouquet on her kitchen table. Vegetable gardening was a must, and she grew and canned many for her family. She also sewed clothing for her children and made beautiful quilts for her family and for others. She knitted and crocheted afghans, booties, and hats for babies. Her special talent was helping anyone in need in any she could and with a smile on her face.

Born Sept. 17, 1922, in Burlington, she was the daughter of John Washington and Dora Schuster Ziglar. She married Harold Kirby French on April 5, 1942, in Burlington. He preceded her in death on Dec. 15, 1991.

Dorothy was a lifelong resident of Burlington and lived nearly all of her life in the house where she was born and raised. She was a homemaker and served as a Cub Scout den mother and as a Girl Scout troop leader. She was involved in the Heritage Quilt Club and volunteered at the Burlington Public Library and in several elementary schools in Burlington.

She was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church where she sang in the church choir and participated in the women’s society. She belonged to United Methodist Women and served as a district officer. She served two missions in Nicaragua. She lived her faith, which was a generous and broad-minded Christianity.

After raising her children, she traveled to Germany, Egypt, Israel, and Ecuador.

She is survived by her children: Peter (Marilyn) French of Council Bluffs, Iowa; John (Lucy) French of Irving, Texas; Paul (Suzanne) French of Burlington; Ruth French of Council Bluffs, Iowa; Mark French of Burlington; David (Lexie) French of Washington, Iowa; and Mary (Jeff) Rand of St. Louis, Missouri; and grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her son Jim French, and three brothers, John Ziglar, Richard Ziglar and Paul Ziglar.

A memorial has been established for the United Methodist Global Ministries project to provide fresh water for Central Congo.

The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, October 12 at Lunning Chapel. Pastor Nancy Sutherland will officiate. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 11 at Lunning Chapel where the family will receive friends.

Elizabeth “Betty” Ann Boughton, 82, of Mount Pleasant, died Thursday, Oct. 3, 2024, at the Henry County Health Center in Mount Pleasant.

Born March 11, 1942 in St. Paul, Iowa, she was the daughter of Alfred “Butch” and Mary Ellen Mueller. She married John Harris Boughton Jr. on June 26, 1970 in West Burlington. They were married for 54 years until his death on June 29, 2024.

Betty began her work career as an X-Ray Technician for Dr. Rashid. She met the love of her life John Boughton Jr. working for Georgia Pacific and eventually became the BEST babysitter and educator in the Burlington area, operating an in-home daycare for years in addition to being a full-time wife, mom and homemaker.

She was an avid baker and made the best cheesy potatoes, wedding/graduation mints and lemon bars. She loved watching and shopping the QVC network, but most important to her was her family and she firmly believed the “sun rose and set” in her grandchildren.

She is survived by her children; Charlotte (Charles) Manganiello of Sunrise, Florida, Shawn (Bridgette) Boughton of Danville, Iowa and Jennifer (Robert) Jern of West Burlington; three grandchildren, Parker, Harris and Cate; two brothers, Darrel (Dana) Mueller of Fort Madison and Michael Mueller of North Liberty, Iowa and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, three brothers, Donnie Mueller, David Mueller and Frank Mueller and two sisters, Barb Brockett and Kathy Medland.

The memorial funeral service for Betty will be 2 p.m. Friday, October 11 at Lunning Chapel. Pastor JudyAnn Morse will officiate. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.

Cynthia Kathleen Merschbrock, 69, of Rochester, Minn., died Thursday, Sept. 26, 2024, at the Cottage Wood Senior Communities. Cynthia was born in&nbsp;Keosauqua, on March 25, 1955, to Elroy and Dorothy Reese. She graduated from&nbsp;Ames High School&nbsp;and continued her education at Central Institute for the Deaf in St. Louis, Mo. Cynthia married Ronald Joseph Merschbrock&nbsp;in Ames, on&nbsp;March 4, 1978.

Cynthia worked as a data entry clerk for Saint Marys Hospital in Rochester, Minn. for&nbsp;many years.&nbsp; She enjoyed working on her many cross-stitch projects and spending time with her three sons and five grandkids.&nbsp; She was also actively involved in the deaf community.&nbsp;&nbsp; Her survivors include her brother Mike, her three sons, Brad (wife Amy), Michael (wife RaeLyn), Matthew (wife Annie), and five grandchildren; Ambrose, Deacon, Lucy, Zoe, Mason, and three nephews Jeff, Chris and Jason.&nbsp;&nbsp; Cynthia is preceded in death by her parents, late husband, and sister-in-law. Born Sept. 24, 1960, in Aurora, Ill., he was the son of Buddy Allen and Carol J Davis Casey. On Jan. 21, 1978, he married Eveline Braddy in Batavia, Ill.&nbsp; Denis had worked in construction since he was 18 years old. Denis loved watching NASCAR. He will be fondly remembered for his great sense of sarcasm and always giving his family and friends a hard time. Survivors include his wife, Eveline Casey of Oquawka, Ill.; two sons, Denis Casey, Jr. of Kirkwood, Ill. and Kenny (Gaby) Casey of Hampshire, Ill.; two daughters, Shelby (Charlie) Czajkowski of Gladstone, Ill. and Heaven (Malachi Fischer-Porter) Casey of Peoria, Ill.; five grandchildren, Denis Casey III, Laine Gholson, Sebastian Martinez, Katalina Casey and Raelyn Czajkowski; and his mother, Carol J Casey of Oquawka, Ill. Gavin Wayne Browning, 16, of New London, died Friday, Sept. 27, 2024, in New London. He was born March 22, 2008, in West Burlington to Ashley Kathleen Kieler and William Wayne Browning. He was a junior at New London High School and following graduation he had planned to become an apprentice in a welding program in Missouri.

Gavin was very independent; loved fishing, especially at Oakland Mills Dam; being with his friends; and adored his three brothers and his “Popi”. He was thriving at his first real job at the Jet Stop in New London.

He is survived by his parents Ashley and Ryan Peiffer of New London, and William Browning; three brothers Bryce Peiffer, Ayden Browning and Chayse Peiffer of New London; half-brothers Liam Browning and Jacob White; half-sister Indie Browning; grandparents Nicholas and Theresa Kieler of West Burlington, Steve Peiffer of Mt. Pleasant, and Bill and Norma Browning of Dayton, Ohio; aunts and uncles Adam Kieler of Burlington, Katie and Adam Duncan of Antioch, Ill., Connie and D.J. Gavin Wayne Browning

Randall Bruce “Randy” White,&nbsp;71, of Wever, died Thursday, Sept. 26, 2024, after a long battle of lung cancer.&nbsp; He was born on Jan. 9, 1953, in Fort Madison, to the late Jesse “JB” and Marjorie “Colleen” White.

Randy was a Marine and served in many ports but the one he had the fondest memories in was from 1974-1977 when he was in Hawaii.&nbsp;&nbsp;

In his younger years, Randy loved the Rodeo. He received many trophies and belt buckles over the years and even qualified for the Finals at Fargo North Dakota.&nbsp;&nbsp;

He leaves his daughter: Heather Dykes and her three sons: Phillip King, Colton King and Jordan Sherman; two brothers: Richard and Russell White; niece: Elizabeth Stapp and her daughters: Samantha and Ashley as well as a great great niece: Remington; nephew: Richard Jr. and his children: Pace and Nora. He was preceded in death by his parents.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Randall Bruce “Randy” White,&nbsp;71, of Wever, died Thursday, Sept. 26, 2024, after a long battle of lung cancer.&nbsp; He was born on Jan. 9, 1953, in Fort Madison, to the late Jesse “JB” and Marjorie “Colleen” White.Randy was a Marine and served in many ports but the one he had the fondest memories in was from 1974-1977 when he was in Hawaii.&nbsp;&nbsp;In his younger years, Randy loved the Rodeo. He received many trophies and belt buckles over the years and even qualified for the Finals at Fargo North Dakota.&nbsp;&nbsp;He leaves his daughter: Heather Dykes and her three sons: Phillip King, Colton King and Jordan Sherman; two brothers: Richard and Russell White; niece: Elizabeth Stapp and her daughters: Samantha and Ashley as well as a great great niece: Remington; nephew: Richard Jr. and his children: Pace and Nora. Donald Downer, 88, of Sperry, died Monday, September 30, 2024, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in West Burlington surround by his family. Born July 31, 1936 in Burlington, he was the son of Maxwell D. and Geneva Mester Downer.

He was a 1954 graduate of Sperry High School and served in the National Guard.

He married Mary June Housman on May 20, 1956 at Salem Lutheran Church in Salem, Iowa. She preceded him in death on June 18, 2024.

Don worked in construction after high school, The Foundary, as a mechanic for John Deere and an engine machinist and service mechanic for an outboard marine local dealership shop.

He was a very accomplished woodworker and enjoyed fishing and camping.

He is survived by his three children; Kevin (Suzanne) Downer of Burlington, Doug (Susan) Downer of Florida and Melody (Duane) Berenger; six grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren; and two great great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, parents and one brother Maxwell D. Downer Jr.

A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 4, 2024, in Burlington Memorial Park with Pastor James Zuehls officiating.

Mary Anne Koontz, 75, of Salem, Iowa, died Monday, Sept. 30, 2024, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.

Born Sept. 18, 1949, in Mount Pleasant, she was the daughter of Harold and Ilse Gardner Christner.

She was the longtime Assistant Manager at Dave’s Super Value until her retirement in November of 2002.

Mary loved spending time with family and friends and game nights. She particularly loved playing jokes and pranks (aka Matilda Koontz) on family with her accomplices (cousins). She enjoyed doing many things, motorcycle riding, dancing, and music and spending time with her grandkids and great grandkids.

Our sincerest thank you to Cindy &amp; Bob Moser (parents). Without the precious gift (organ donor) from your loved one Lisa Moser, that she so thoughtfully gave, we would not have been able to have the extra 13 years with Mom. She got to meet all 9 of her great grandbabies and be at many other family and friend events. I don’t know if our gratitude can ever be truly expressed and the importance of organ donation and the gift you gave our family.

Jean E. Schnupper, 92, of West Burlington, died Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2024, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born Jan. 24, 1932, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Horace W. and Florence E. Hillgartner Dodds. On April 20, 1952, she married Donald Dee Schnupper at the Danville United Methodist Church in Danville.&nbsp;

She was a 1950 graduate of Danville High School.&nbsp;

Jean was an office clerk for the Des Moines County Assessor's Office for 30 years.

She was a member of Danville United Methodist Church. Jean volunteered at the hospital for many years. She enjoyed reading, NASCAR racing, and watching college basketball. She had a soft spot for animals, especially her dogs. But most of all, Jean enjoyed spending time with her family.

Survivors include her husband, Don; two daughters, Lynn Sloan of West Burlington, and Kim (Randy) Foor of Morning Sun; four grandchildren, Brianne (Courtney) Duncan, Zach Newman, Jazzla Jean (Ross) Birkenstock, and Gabe (Megan) Newman; five great-grandchildren, Dylan Jean, Gabe Jr., Bo, Bobbi Sue, and Gracie; sister-in-law, Iona Beckman; three special nieces, Laurie Caggiano, Sherry Kaestner, and Luana Lambert and bonus daughter, Jane Kuepper.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Robert and William Dodds, and one sister, Janet Lee Dodds.

Burial will be at Jaggar Cemetery in Danville at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established for St. Jude Children's Hospital and PAW Animal Shelter in Fort Madison.

Bambi Lee Orth, 70, of Burlington, passed peacefully, Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2024, at her home.

Born May 4, 1954, in Davenport, she was the daughter of Bernard H.F. and Haldis Bredesen Wagener. On June 21, 1975, she married Timothy Jo Orth at Faith Lutheran Church in Burlington.&nbsp;

She was a 1972 graduate of Burlington High School and then attended Southeastern Community College where she obtained her certified secretary certificate.

Bambi worked as a secretary for Benner Tea and later for H &amp; R Block for 40 years. She also worked as a paraeducator for Burlington Community School District, working at Prospect, Corse, BHS and Sunnyside until her retirement in 2018.&nbsp;

She was a charter member of Faith Lutheran Church where she helped in many ways over the years. Bambi was the former president of the Burlington Police Auxiliary and helped organize the family portrait fundraiser. She had many interests, including watching Hallmark movies, reading romance novels, writing, creating and painting ceramics, sewing, making clothes, and coloring. Bambi had a love for music and played the violin in the orchestra. Bambi enjoyed her gardens, growing beautiful flowers, as well as tomatoes and peppers for homemade salsa. She enjoyed playing Bunco with her friends, going shopping, and considered herself a sommelier. Bambi liked to travel, either with her sister to far off places or on trips with her family. Above all else, she loved her family and spending time with them.&nbsp;

She will be remembered for having their home decorated for every holiday and being a kind, compassionate woman who always wore a smile.&nbsp;

Survivors include her husband, Timothy Orth; three daughters, Nicole (Kyle) Dobson, Laura Orth, and Courtney (Brent) Miller; three grandchildren, Isabella, &nbsp;Lana, and Owen; two siblings, Bernal (Ronald) Koch, and Dale (Marina) Wagener; nephew and niece, Christopher Koch, and Katherine Summers and their families.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Douglas (Gloria) and three grandchildren Madi, Luca and Maddex.

Visitation will be from noon until 7 p.m. with the family to receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, October 4, 2024, at Prugh Funeral Service, 3940 Division Street.

Linda Kay Campbell, 73, of Burlington, died Monday, Sept. 30, 2024, at New London Care Center.

Born Sept. 8, 1951, she was the daughter of Albert and Doris Mayo. She married Walter D. Campbell on Oct. 2, 1970. He preceded her in death on Oct. 28, 2011.

Linda was a homemaker. She enjoyed scrapbooking and crafting and enjoyed watching HGTV and the Hallmark Channel.

She is survived by her two children; Patty (Greg) Romack of Aurora, Illinois and Justin Campbell of Burlington; five grandchildren, Savannah Romack, Kaitlin Romack, Noah Romack, Gabby Romack and Matthew Romack; brother Don Mayo of Burlington and sister Debbie Heaton of Bushnell, Illinois.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, sister Carolyn Ford and brother James Mayo.

The funeral service for Mrs. Campbell will be 1 p.m. Monday, Oct. 7 at Lunning Chapel. Interment will be held at Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery.

Leslie A. Jarvis, 61, of Burlington, died Saturday, Sept. 28, 2024, at OakView Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Burlington. Born on Jan. 20, 1963, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Paul and Rosemary Levins Loper Sr.

Leslie was a 1983 graduate of Burlington High School and a member of Divine Mercy Parish. She worked at Summer Street Vet Clinic for Dr. Skelly for many years. Leslie enjoyed doing decoupage and plaster of Paris and many other crafts. She had a soft spot in her heart for her pets and all animals. Leslie enjoyed watching comedy shows and going for rides in the car and listening to country music. Most of all Leslie loved being with her grandchildren and doing crafts with them.

She is survived by mother Rosemary; her two daughters: Nicole Hartman of Burlington and Emily Hanger of Blandinsville, Illinois; seven grandchildren: Lorenzo Raga, Kamryn Hartman, Hudson Hartman, Alice Heinzel, Alivia Heinzel, Hunter Allen and Hendrick Allen; siblings: Patrick (Diane Humphries) Loper, Paul Loper, Pamela Hester, Elmer (Joy) Loper and John Loper. Also surviving are several nieces, nephews, great and great-great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father, significant other Terry O’Hair and her beloved pets: Amber and Tazer.

Per her wishes cremation has been entrusted and accorded to the care of Lunning Chapel. No services will be held at this time.

Leslie A. Jarvis

Martha Louise Galbraith,&nbsp;87, of Burlington, formerly of West Point, died Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2024, at the Henry County Health Center in Moubnt Pleasant.

She was born on Nov.&nbsp; 27, 1936, in Fort Madison, the daughter of John D. and Florence Boeddeker Hogan. On Nov. 28, 1964, she married Russell Worly Galbraith. They later divorced.

She is survived by her three daughters: Audra (Todd) Gerleman of Lockridge, Iowa, Carolyn Galbraith of New London, Iowa, Sheila Galbraith - Hull of Fort Madison, Iowa; one son: Michael (Jennifer) Galbraith of Homer Glen, Illinois; nine grandchildren: Alexandria and Liam Gerleman, Colter LeMoyne, Cameron and Josie Zeller, Adrianna Galbraith and Elizabeth Hull, Linden and Sloane Galbraith; sisters: Mary Scheetz, Cecelia Richards, as well as several nieces and nephews, all of whom were special to her.

She was preceded in death by her parents; four sisters: Alberta Wetherill, Irene Parrot, Margaret Haas, Cleta Beimer; three brothers: George, John D. and Bernard Hogan.

Martha attended the Burlington Beauty Academy. Following her schooling, she worked at salons in Houghton and Fort Madison. She then, ran a hair salon out of her home until she retired. She lastly was employed by Sears.

Martha was a lifelong Catholic. A highlight of her life was when she and her sister saw Pope John Paul II in Des Moines. She enjoyed gardening, bowling, shopping, playing cards, dancing in her younger years, traveling, family get togethers and time spent with her grandchildren, whom she adored.

A graveside service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 30, 2024, at Denmark Cemetery&nbsp; in Denmark, Iowa with Father Dan Dorau officiating.

 </figure>Martha Louise Galbraith,&nbsp;87, of Burlington, formerly of West Point, died Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2024, at the Henry County Health Center in Moubnt Pleasant.She was born on Nov.&nbsp; 27, 1936, in Fort Madison, the daughter of John D. and Florence Boeddeker Hogan. On Nov. 28, 1964, she married Russell Worly Galbraith. They later divorced.She is survived by her three daughters: Audra (Todd) Gerleman of Lockridge, Iowa, Carolyn Galbraith of New London, Iowa, Sheila Galbraith - Hull of Fort Madison, Iowa; one son: Michael (Jennifer) Galbraith of Homer Glen, Illinois; nine grandchildren: Alexandria and Liam Gerleman, Colter LeMoyne, Cameron and Josie Zeller, Adrianna Galbraith and Elizabeth Hull, Linden and Sloane Galbraith; sisters: Mary Scheetz, Cecelia Richards, as well as several nieces and nephews, all of whom were special to her.She was preceded in death by her parents; four sisters: Alberta Wetherill, Irene Parrot, Margaret Haas, Cleta Beimer; three brothers: George, John D. and Bernard Hogan.Martha attended the Burlington Beauty Academy. Following her schooling, she worked at salons in Houghton and Fort Madison. She then, ran a hair salon out of her home until she retired. She lastly was employed by Sears.Martha was a lifelong Catholic. A highlight of her life was when she and her sister saw Pope John Paul II in Des Moines. She enjoyed gardening, bowling, shopping, playing cards, dancing in her younger years, traveling, family get togethers and time spent with her grandchildren, whom she adored.A graveside service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 30, 2024, at Denmark Cemetery&nbsp; in Denmark, Iowa with Father Dan Dorau officiating.Burial will be at Denmark Cemetery.A memorial has been established in her memory.Schmitz Funeral Home of West Point is assisting the family with arrangements.&nbsp;

Kirk D. Mathis, 71, of Burlington, died Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2024, at his home.

Born on April 17, 1953, in Shenandoah, he was the son of Kenneth and Lucille Swanson Mathis. On Nov. 23, 1974, in Shenandoah, he married Karen Gowing.

Kirk was a 1971 graduate of Shenandoah High School. He attended Iowa State University and received his bachelor’s degree in Forestry. He worked for Iowa Department of Natural Resources for sixteen years in the State Parks System and eighteen years in Environmental Protection Division. In 2010, he decided it was time to retire after 34 years of service with Iowa DNR. He was a member of Harmony Bible Church. Kirk was a man of faith and loved to serve Jesus, and loved his country. In his free time, he enjoyed being outdoors, hunting, and fishing. Kirk was a huge Iowa State Cyclones fan, always enjoying a good football or basketball game. When the weather was just right, he loved to take Karen for a ride in his Mustang convertible. Most of all Kirk always loved being with friends and family, especially his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Karen; two sons: T.J. (Jill) Mathis of Danville, Iowa, and Joel (Becky) Mathis of Libertyville, Illinois; three grandchildren: Lucy, Logan and Adam Mathis; three brothers: Greg (Francoise) Mathis of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Tim Mathis of Shenandoah, Iowa, and Jeff (Margie) Mathis of Wellsville, Kansas; sisters-in-law: Kathy (Dennis) Bayless of Shenandoah, Iowa, and Jolinda Gowing of Clarinda, Iowa, and brother-in-law Jeff Saner of Shenandoah, Iowa. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents: Kenneth and Lucille Mathis; in-laws: Clifford and Genevieve Gowing; brother-in-law Kevin Gowing and sister-in-law Kim Saner.

Per his wishes cremation has been entrusted and accorded to the care of Lunning Chapel in Burlington.

The visitation for Kirk will be held 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2024, at Lunning Chapel in Burlington.

A memorial service for Kirk will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 12, 2024, at First United Methodist Church in Shenandoah, with Pastor Jordan Gowing officiating. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Inurnment will be held in Rose Hill Cemetery in Shenandoah.

Michael E. Sink, Sr., 73, of Burlington, died Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2024 at his home.

Born Dec. 7, 1950, in Burlington, he was the son of Donald E. and Wanda Lee Dile Sink.

Michael graduated from Burlington High School and Trade School. He married Wilma Sickle Porter Sept. 26, 1992, in Burlington and from this blended family, raised six children.

Michael began working at age 18 for the CB&amp;Q Railroad, Burlington Northern which became Burlington Northern Santa Fe. He worked there as a boilermaker for 43 years.

He was quite the historian, citing dates and history of wars and other events in the past. Michael liked building for home improvement and was very knowledgeable and particular about his work. He like going to the Big Hollow shooting range with his friend and co-worker from the railroad, Jerry McCormick.

After a motorcycle accident Michael was not able to return to his craft as a boilermaker, but kept busy with exploring many ways to keep busy. He enjoyed cooking, baking and finding new recipes to try. He always encouraged friends and family to try his new recipes, insisting they try a bite, even if not hungry or on a diet.

Survivors include his wife Wilma of Burlington; children Michael E. Sink, Jr of Bald Knob, Ark., Jason (Stacey) Sink of Ft. Madison, Sarah (Danny) Casey of Blytheville, Ark., Michelle (John) Kibling of Burlington, Deidra Porter Bowman of Burlington, and John Wesely Porter of Texas; 15 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren; one sister Judy (Kenny) Davis of Port Orange, Fla., and one brother Dennis (Debra) Sink of Burlington.

He was preceded in death by both parents.

Per his wishes, cremation has been accorded and entrusted to the care of Lunning Chapel. Inurnment will be at a later date in Aspen Grove Cemetery.

A memorial has been established for the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House.

Michael E. Sink Jr

Dale Warren Stewart, 74, of West Burlington, passed away peacefully on Monday, Sept. 23, 2024, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center.

Born July of 1950 in Burlington, he was the son of R.W. and Geneva Whitacre Stewart.&nbsp;

He was a 1968 graduate of West Burlington High School and attended the University of Northern Iowa after graduation. Before settling down in West Burlington to independently raise his daughter, he lived in the Quad Cities and Virginia Beach.

Dale dedicated nearly 25 years to working at Schaffer Golf Course in Fort Madison, which he enjoyed immensely. Outside of golf, Dale enjoyed spending time with friends and the simple pleasures in life; such as sweet treats, Iowa tenderloins with Sterzing's potato chips, and watching the St. Louis Cardinals.&nbsp;

Survivors include his daughter, Lucia Jackson of Cincinnati, OH; grandson, Oscar Franklin; twin brother, Dave Stewart of West Burlington; older brother, John (Jody) Stewart of Lenexa, Kan.; and older sister, Linda Davies of Wichita, Kan.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother-in-law, Smith Davies and a few radical friends who meant a lot to him.&nbsp;

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh Crematory.

A Celebration of Life for Dale will be Saturday, Nov. 2, 2024, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Boogaloo Cafe.

Douglas Alan Mattoon, 53, of Burlington, died Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2024, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born Oct. 28, 1970, in Burlington, he was the son of Warren L. and Sharon J. Haley Mattoon.

He graduated from Burlington High School. He attended Southeastern Community College and studied auto mechanics.

He was a very proud U.S. Marines Veteran.

Doug worked as a maintenance supervisor at the US Gypsum Sperry plant for 20 years. He spent many years helping his long time friend, Jim Scudder.

Doug enjoyed playing darts, watching WWE wrestling and car racing. Before his father's passing, he spent many hours helping him restore cars. He loved being with his grandbabies. Doug had a caring heart and was always doing what he could for others.&nbsp;

Survivors include his mother, Sharon J. Mattoon of Burlington; five children: Jordaan (Jacob Nettleton) Mattoon of Burlington, Shelby (Matthew) Fedder Mattoon of Colo., Brady Mattoon of CO, Austin Irthum of Colo., and Cody Earl of Colo.; furbabies, Jade and Ivy; four grandchildren, Mya, Hadley, Catalina and Delaney Fedder; granddogs, Swish and Blu; brother, Steven (Susan) Mattoon of Ill.; long-time Partner, Rhonda Snyder of Burlington; bonus children, Michelle Parnell and Alexandria Miscevich both of Burlington; and bonus grandchild, Ronan Penrod.

Douglas Alan Mattoon

Patrick Thomas McLaughlin, 92, of Burlington, passed away peacefully on Monday, Sept. 23, 2024, in his apartment at Addington Place in West Burlington.

Born in Burlington in 1931, he was the son of Daniel A. and Marie E. Fitzgerald McLaughlin. Pat lived in Burlington most of his life except during the great depression as a child, his family lived in the Dodgeville / Mediapolis area. On Sept. 19, 1953, he married Elsie Colleen Whitaker in Burlington. They celebrated many wonderful years until her passing on Feb. 3, 2023.

Pat worked for Carl A Nelson Construction, was a licensed real estate agent and finished his career working for over 15 years at the Iowa State Penitentiary. He would often joke that working with maximum security inmates was one of the most rewarding aspects of his career. In 1979 Pat opened the West Side Racquetball Club in West Burlington, Iowa and would own and operate the club for about 6 years prior to moving on to the Iowa State Penitentiary where he would retire from.

One of Pat's passions in life was the sport of handball, which was the catalyst for him opening the club in West Burlington. Pat would spend the 1970's and 1980's running handball leagues and tournaments in Burlington at the downtown YMCA and then the club in West Burlington. Family vacations would often be in conjunction with the national junior's handball tournaments that all three of his son's would compete in throughout their youth. Pat played handball competitively until he was about 84 years old and when he was 80, he traveled to Minneapolis for the national tournament and finished second in the doubles division for players 80 and above. Pat was also an avid hunter and traveler. He would often travel to Missouri to hunt with his son Pat and his grandson Drake. He also traveled to Africa for a hunting trip and several times to South America duck hunting with Pat Jr. He and Elsie traveled to Alaska, Mexico, Europe, Hawaii and went on several cruises.&nbsp;

Survivors include his sons, Patrick (Lori) McLaughlin of Dawn, Mo., Andrew (Yumiko Shiga) McLaughlin of Fort Myers, Fla., and Matt (Melanie) McLaughlin of Lenexa, Kan.; &nbsp;four grandchildren, Lauryn McLaughlin of Shawnee, Kan., Drake McLaughlin of Ames, Madison McLaughlin of Lenexa, Kan., and Tengi Shiga of New York, N.Y.; and two sisters, Linda K (Tom) Clayton and Rosemary Carol Abel, both of Burlington.

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers: Dan and Eugene McLaughlin, three sisters: Lorraine Hockett, Rita Smith, and Joan Riley.

Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 28, 2024, at Prugh Funeral Service, 3940 Division Street.

Patrick Thomas McLaughlin

Vincent E. Moser, 67, of Burlington, Iowa, died Saturday, Sept.&nbsp; 21, 2024, at his home.

Born on Dec. 2, 1956, in Burlington, he was the son of Leslie and Mary Little Moser. On April 24, 1982, in Burlington, he married Nancy Helling.

Vincent worked for the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant for many years before he retired. He enjoyed duck and turkey hunting and playing cards. He loved to watch the St. Louis Cardinals and Miami Dolphins. Doing yard work was not a chore, he loved to take good care of his yard and cleaning the pool, where he often times called “Pool Boy”. Vincent was always willing to lend a helping hand. Hosting Super Bowl and Fourth of July parties was always fun for him. Most of all Vincent loved being with his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife Nancy; daughters: Cassie (Justin Duerksen) Moser, Carrie Moser and Corrie (Alex Garrels) Moser all of Burlington; two grandchildren: Caitlinn and Riland Coombs of Burlington; four great grandchildren: Geordie, Jakoby, Nessa and Willow all of Burlington; sister Shelly (John) Whooley of Burlington and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers: Mike Moser and Duane Moser and sister Sandra Rice.

Per his wishes cremation has been entrusted and accorded with Lunning Chapel.

A Celebration of Life will be from 4:00 p.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday Oct. 5, 2024 at the Burlington Gym, 129 S 4th Street in Burlington.

 </figure>Vincent E. Moser, 67, of Burlington, Iowa, died Saturday, Sept.&nbsp; 21, 2024, at his home.Born on Dec. 2, 1956, in Burlington, he was the son of Leslie and Mary Little Moser. On April 24, 1982, in Burlington, he married Nancy Helling.Vincent worked for the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant for many years before he retired. He enjoyed duck and turkey hunting and playing cards. He loved to watch the St. Louis Cardinals and Miami Dolphins. Doing yard work was not a chore, he loved to take good care of his yard and cleaning the pool, where he often times called “Pool Boy”. Vincent was always willing to lend a helping hand. Hosting Super Bowl and Fourth of July parties was always fun for him. Vincent E. Moser

Carolyn A. Miller, 87, of Burlington, Iowa died peacefully at Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House on Sept. 21, 2024. She was born in Burlington on May 3, 1937, to Glenn and Vivian Milton Miller. Carolyn’s life was one of service and sacrifice grounded in Christian love. Earning a BS and MA in Nursing at the University of Iowa and Certification in Nurse-Midwifery at Else Inglis Maternity Hospital in Edinburg, Scottland, she spent the majority of her professional life from 1966 to 1990 as a medical missionary with the Lutheran Church in America (now ELCA) serving as a nursing and midwifery practitioner and instructor at Phebe Hospital &amp; School of Nursing and Cuttington University College in rural Liberia, West Africa. She served the goal of educating nurses who could eventually take over key nursing and teaching positions and improve healthcare in the country long term. In response to her witnessed need to reduce the high maternal and infant mortality in the country, she started a class for Certified Midwives writing the curriculum so that those with a 6th grade level of education could be adequately trained in safe midwifery practices. In 1980, she founded the Phebe Hospital Midwifery School to train BSN Nurse-Midwives in midwifery and teaching skills to prepare midwifery educators, one of only two in West Africa at the time. While she claimed the founding of this school as her greatest professional achievement, she noted that her student’ achievements were really her greatest achievements. The magnitude of the impact she made on maternal healthcare in rural Liberia cannot be overstated. In 1976, she was awarded the Knight Commander of the Liberian Humane Order of African Redemption by Liberian President William R. Tolbert Jr. for her work. In 2023, the maternity ward at Phebe Hospital was rededicated as the Carolyn A. Miller Maternity Ward to recognize her contributions. Known most commonly as Miss Miller, she also proudly accepted the titles of Aunty, Mommy, and Old Ma from hundreds of Liberians, often helping to pay their school fees and supporting the babies she delivered long into life. After returning to the United States in 1990, she and her family continued to support Phebe Hospital through Liberia’s 14 year-long civil war by shorting and shipping over 60 tons of donated medical supplies to the hospital providing much-needed assistance. She worked at Maternal Health Center in Bettendorf, Iowa until her retirement in 2002. She then kept busy by volunteering with hospice, serving as an elementary student mentor, participating in a writers’ group, staying active at Messiah Lutheran Church, and spending extremely valuable time with her biological family while keeping in close contact with her Liberian “family.”

Carolyn is survived by her siblings - Venita (Don) Myatt, Janis Miller, and Tom (Lorna) Miller all of Burlington, nephews - Dan Myatt, Steve Myatt, and Tim (Marla) Myatt all of Burlington and Titan (Danielle) Miller of Tehachapi, Calif., niece – Dione (Ben) Stepanek of La Crosse, Wis., two great nephews, one great niece, and many Liberian and Missionary “family.” She was preceded in death by her parents, Glenn and Vivian Miller, niece, Gena Myatt, and many Liberian friends and “family.”

Visitation will be 5 p.m to 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 4 at Lunning Chapel where the family will receive friends. The funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 5 at Messiah Lutheran Church. Pastor Damisha McFarland-Pollock will officiate. Interment will be in Spring Grove Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to support Global Health Ministries, Messiah Lutheran Church, and scholarships for K-12 students at the Carolyn A. Miller School in Monrovia, Liberia.
