Esther Morse, 92, of Fort Madison, fell into the arms of God on Saturday, Aug. 19, 2023.&nbsp; She was born Sept. 20, 1930, in Brighton, Colo., a daughter of John and Mary Bitter Ells.&nbsp; On May 6, 1952, she married Charlie Martin Morse at Fort Madison.&nbsp; He preceded her in death May 30, 2015.

She was a homemaker.&nbsp; For 25 years, she worked as a nurse's aide at the former Fort Madison Community Hospital.&nbsp; She enjoyed gardening, embroidery, sewing, and traveling.&nbsp; She was a member of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church.

Esther was a loving mother and grandmother.&nbsp; She is survived by her six children; Charlotte Fraise, of North Dakota; Rebecca (Ronald Jr.) Leffler, Tennessee;&nbsp; Linda King (Bruce Scott), of Georgia; Steven (Esther) Morse, of Panama; Rose (Bruce) Bohnenkamp, of Iowa; and Sheila Morse, Colorado; 10 grandchildren; Spencer Fraise, Adam Fraise, Ronald Leffler III, Heather Leffler, Barry King II, Benjamin King, Joey Morse, Jennie Inger, Emily McPeak, and Alexander Bohnenkamp; many great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter.&nbsp; She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, five brothers, four sisters, one granddaughter Melissa Leffler, and one daughter-in-law Julie Morse.

Her family will greet friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 25, 2023, at the Barr Memorial Chapel, Fort Madison, followed by an 11 a.m. Funeral Service at the funeral home, with Chaplain Gordon Hawkins from EveryStep Hospice officiating. Burial will be at the Aspen Grove Cemetery, Burlington.&nbsp; A memorial has been established, contributions may be made at the Barr Memorial Chapel, Fort Madison. &nbsp;

Deloris Jackson, 72, of Mt. Pleasant, formerly of Danville, died Friday, August 18, 2023, at Savannah Heights in Mt. Pleasant.

Born Jan. 6, 1951, in Creston, Iowa she was the daughter of Dean and Doris Longfellow Gillette. She was a member of Yarmouth Baptist Church.

Deloris graduated from West High School in Davenport. She married Richard Jackson. They later divorced.

She was primarily a homemaker and also worked at Motorola. She retired from Community Bank in Wapello.

Most important to Deloris were her children, grandchildren, family, and friends.

Survivors include her children, Kim Hauswirth of Danville, Jason (Lonetta) Jackson of Danville, and Kristi (Levi) Palmer of Mediapolis; daughter-in-law Christy Jackson of Danville; grandchildren Baylee, Macy, Wyatt Jackson, Kylene Hauswirth, Kolton, Kody, Kelsey, Kaleb Jackson, Brantly and Tyler Palmer, Kenzie Langan, and Ayden Doyle; great-grandchildren Weston Jackson and Oakley Shoemaker; brothers Dale (Joanna) Gillette of Bettendorf, Jon Gillette of Davenport and Jamie (Tammy) Gillette of Maryville, Tennessee, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and son Troy Jackson.

The funeral service for Deloris will be 10 a.m. &nbsp;Friday, Aug. 25 at Lunning Chapel with Pastor Jeff Duffy officiating. Interment will follow in Long Creek Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

A memorial has been established for Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House.

Richard Lyle “Bear” Renshaw, 71, of Burlington, died Friday, Aug. 18, 2023, at his home.

Born Nov. 29, 1951, in Burlington, he was the son of Melvin Lyle “Bear” and Marybell Seymour Renshaw. He married Rita Lynn Rea June 30, 1972, at the Aldersgate Chapel in Burlington. He was of the Christian faith.

Richard worked for Champion Spark Plug for 15 years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and guns. He was a woodworker and a family man.

Survivors include his wife Rita of Burlington; one son Ryan Renshaw; one daughter Renee Renshaw both of Burlington; one granddaughter Hallie Renshaw and one grandson Mason McAllister; one sister Debra Graham of Wapello.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother Danny Renshaw, and several aunts and uncles.

Per his wishes, cremation has been entrusted and accorded to the care of Lunning Chapel. There will be no services at this time.

Deborah Christine Payne, 72, died Friday, Aug. 11, 2023, at Southeast Iowa Home Health &amp; Hospice, West Burlington, after a battle with cancer and dementia.

Deb was born a fiery redhead Dec. 28, 1950, in rural Hennepin County, Minn., where she grew up on a dairy cow farm, to Madelyn Beatrice Kevitt Rosendahl and Robert William Rosendahl II. She leaves behind two siblings, who she was very close to and loved dearly, Renee Carr of Arizona, and Robert "Bob" Rosendahl of Oklahoma.

Deb married her soul mate, David Anthony "Tony" Payne II, on June 15, 1970, in King, Wash. The two met while living in Seattle, where Tony was stationed during his time in the U.S. Navy. After marrying, they moved to Tony’s hometown of Ottumwa where they built a beautiful life together while Tony worked 40 years with USPS.

After his retirement, they traveled and settled down in Oklahoma. They loved scenic routes, small antique shops and being on the road, and most of all, each other. They are reunited together in Heaven, after Tony’s passing Feb. 8, 2013, where I’m sure he was waiting for his “Little Debbie Cakes” with arms wide open.

Deb was a homemaker who fiercely loved her family, enjoyed spending time in her beautiful garden, swimming, interior decorating, and a good mystery novel. Her husband and her son were her world and she loved spending summers with her son, David Anthony Payne III, his wife, Kellie Lynn Payne, and her only grandchild, Lindzie Ashlyn Payne at her home on Lake Eufaula. She loved being a grandmother, and preferred to be lovingly referred to as “Mammy.” She lived long enough to become a great-grandmother to a set of twins, Stella and Milo, who she absolutely adored. She leaves a void in the lives of those she leaves behind and her loud laughter, big smile, generosity, and charm will not easily be forgotten.

Cremation will be handled by Iowa Cremation Society of Cedar Rapids. A small ceremony will be held with just close family at their rural property.

In lieu of flowers or gifts, donations can be made to Southeast Iowa Regional Home Health &amp; Hospice.

Carolyn Kacena, beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away Aug. 16, 2023. Born on a farm in Riverside, on Nov. 30, 1932, Carolyn was the third of the four children of Ray and Mildred Means Marner. The family moved to a farm outside of Iowa City, where Carolyn’s education began in a one-room schoolhouse for grades one through eight.

Carolyn, at the age of 14, went to live and work at the home of Dr. Lew and Mrs. Eliose January in order to attend Iowa City High School. After graduating from high school in 1950, she continued her education at the University of Iowa where she received, in 1954, her BSN. Carolyn started her nursing career at the University of Iowa and years later she was proud to participate in the pinning ceremonies of two of her granddaughters who also obtained nursing degrees.

On Sept. 18, 1954, Carolyn married James Lee Kacena. The couple were married for 53 years until Jim’s death in 2008. Together they had five children. With the purchase of a John Deere dealership near Mediapolis, the family moved to Burlington in 1974 where Carolyn worked in the family business. After selling their dealership Carolyn remained active with other business ventures.&nbsp;

Upon her semi-retirement, she found time to join organizations that reflect her interest in women's and girls' advancement through education and training, the arts, reading, and music. She hit it hard joining T.T.T., Questers, PEO-Chapter NI, Soroptimist, League of Women Voters, Foster Care Review Board, Friends of the Library, and the Southeast Iowa Symphony.&nbsp;

Carolyn relished practicing yoga and going on quests to find Flow Blue China and flower frogs. One of her greatest pleasures was playing Bridge and she was killer at it! She was a voracious reader and influenced her five children and husband to all relish a good book. Her enjoyment of travel helped fulfill her sense of adventure and curious spirit.

Grandchildren spent many cherished days at Jim and Carolyns’ home in the country. Playing in the woods, riding bikes on the gravel roads, fishing, swimming, and having tea parties. Spending time with Grandma also meant many trips to the public library, Starr’s Cave, and other educational field trips. Grandma credited her yoga practice with enabling her participation in family paintball games and doing some cave crawling.

Carolyn will be greatly missed by her family: David(Sandy) Kacena of Iowa City, IA; Christopher(Shawn) Kacena of North Little Rock, AR; Kathryn (Lorry) Lazenby of Joplin, MO; Cynthia(C. Lynn) Cavett of Macomb, IL; and Jennifer (Randy) Frice of Burlington. Grandchildren: Amy (Chad) Bollinger; Ashton Kacena; Abby Kacena (Randy Flint); Cameron(Haley) Kacena; Jacob Kacena; Nicholas Kacena of; Hannah Neenan; John (Alena)Lazenby; Rachel (Patrick)Brennan; Max Cavett (Annelise Tarnowski); and Jack(Caitlin) Cavett; one stepson, Blake (Amanda) Shadell and twelve great-grandchildren with one on the way.&nbsp; Survivors also include three sister-in-laws: Carol Marner, Betty Kacena, and Karen Diltz and one brother-in-law, Richard Emmert, and many nieces and nephews.

Carolyn was preceded in death by her parents, husband and three siblings: Gene Marner, William Marner, Marilyn Emmert; brothers-in-law: Bob Kacena, Stan Kacena and Tom Diltz and sisters-in-law, Bernice Marner and Carole Kacena and grandson Nathaniel Lazenby.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh Crematory.

Visitation will be from 12:00 PM until 7:00 PM with the family to receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM Thursday, August 24, 2023 at Prugh Funeral Service, 3940 Division Street.

The memorial service for Mrs. Kacena will be 11:00 AM Friday, August 25, 2023, at Prugh Funeral Service, 3940 Division Street. Burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery (Iowa City) at a later date.

Carolyn Kacena

Thomas "Tom" Roy Birkenstock, 79, of Burlington, died Tuesday, Aug. 15, 2023, at the Azria Health Prairie Ridge in Mediapolis.

Born July 16, 1944, in Burlington, he was the son of Roy George and Marjorie Maude Holsteen Birkenstock. On Feb. 26, 1966, he married Sue Ellen Maupin in Dodgeville.&nbsp;

He graduated from Iowa State University with a bachelor's degree in animal science in 1966. Tom spent his lifetime working as a farmer and he was always "Outstanding in his field".

He was a U.S. National Guard Veteran, serving for six years.

He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church of Dodgeville, where he served on the church council for many years, taught Sunday School, and was a pre-marital sponsor. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed golfing, woodworking, hunting, fishing, and traveling. He was a fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes, Green Bay Packers, and the St. Louis Cardinals. He loved spending time with his grandchildren. Tom especially enjoyed attending their events and vacationing with them. He had a very outgoing personality, was always very generous, and never knew a stranger.&nbsp;

On Feb. 26, 1966, he married Sue Ellen Maupin in Dodgeville.&nbsp;He graduated from Iowa State University with a bachelor's degree in animal science in 1966. Tom spent his lifetime working as a farmer and he was always "Outstanding in his field".He was a U.S. National Guard Veteran, serving for six years.He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church of Dodgeville, where he served on the church council for many years, taught Sunday School, and was a pre-marital sponsor. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed golfing, woodworking, hunting, fishing, and traveling. He was a fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes, Green Bay Packers, and the St. Louis Cardinals. He loved spending time with his grandchildren. Tom especially enjoyed attending their events and vacationing with them. Thomas "Tom" Roy Birkenstock

Geneva Verne Loyd Stewart, 85, of Burlington, died Tuesday, Aug. 15, 2023, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in West Burlington.

Born Feb. 17, 1938, in Gladstone, Ill., she was the daughter of Edward Wesley and Helen Verne Hunter Huss. She married Louis William Loyd in 1957. He preceded her in death in October 1978. On May 8, 1998, she married Lloyd Jack Stewart at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. He died June 10, 2017.

She attended Gladstone High School.&nbsp;

She worked at Antenna Craft for 16 years, as well as Heatilator for eight and a half years and Leopold's for eight and a half years before retirement.&nbsp;&nbsp;

She was a member of the Nazarene Church. She enjoyed dancing, playing pool, BINGO, attending family reunions and loved going to the casino.&nbsp;

Survivors include her daughter, Sue Ann Loyd (Ed Murphy) of Burlington; grandson, David Lee Loyd of Burlington; granddaughter, Candy Lynn Loyd of Burlington; great-grandchildren, Jacob, Matthew, Chianne, and Kathryn; brother, Edward Wesley of Burlington; and many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, both husbands, five brothers, five sisters, one grandson and several nieces and nephews.&nbsp;

The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. Monday, Aug. 21, 2023, at Prugh Funeral Service, 3940 Division Street.

Kenneth Haley Jr., 79, of Gladstone, Ill., died Aug. 8, 2023, in a side-by-side accident.

Born May 26, 1944, in Burlington, he was the son of Kenneth Sr. and Dorothy Mauthe Haley. He married Rita D. Zachmeyer on Sept. 14, 1962. He retired from his own business, Ken Haley Trucking and he worked for several other trucking businesses along with running heavy equipment.

He loved to work which was his hobby as well.

He played basketball and softball. He loved snowmobiling, motorcycle riding, camping, and spending time with his family, extended family, grandkids, and great-grandkids.

Kenny and Rita celebrated 56 years of marriage. They traveled extensively together taking wonderful trips over the years such as snowmobiling trips to Wisconsin, several motorcycle trips, Graceland and the Grand Ole Opry, California, Washington, Silver Dollar City in Branson, Mo., Nevada, and spent their 25th anniversary in Hawaii.

Survivors include his two daughters; Robin (Larry) South and Kathy (Jeff) Foley; five grandchildren, Bryan, Nichole, Keven, Joe, and Rebecca; nine great-grandchildren Isabella, Logan, Jesse, Victor, Ezra, Haley, Conor, Alex and Emma; and two brothers Jack Haley and Gary Haley.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.

The service for Mr. Haley will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 19 at Lunning Chapel where family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.

Memorials have been established for Burlington Fire Department and Burlington MedForce for the excellent care and compassion they displayed during the family’s time of need.

Darrell Dwayne Fenton Jr., 64, of Peyton, Colo., died Aug.10, 2023. Darrell was born on May 25, 1959, to Darrell "Red" Dwayne Fenton Sr. and Judy Ann Fenton in Burlington.

Darrell went to Mediapolis Iowa High School and graduated in 1977. He went on to start his own business, Fenton Contracting, which he proudly ran for 33 years.

Darrell married the love of his life, Susan Koval, on Oct. 17, 1981, in Burlington.

Darrell loved hunting, fishing, boating, camping, and tinkering in his garage. If it was broken, he could fix it. He also enjoyed spending time with his family.

Darrell is preceded in death by his father, Darrell "Red" Dwayne Fenton Sr., brother, Bradley Dwight Fenton, and nephew, Christopher Martin Fenton.

He is Survived by Susan Marie Koval; mother, Judy Ann Fenton; son, BranDen Christopher Koval (Lupe); daughter, Jacsmin Marie Koval (Josh); brother, Marty Christopher Fenton, and grandchildren, Anthony James Koval, Colton Alexander Koval, Donnie Red Koval, and Landon Michael Fluegel.

A celebration of life will be held on Sept. 23 from 12 to 4 p.m. at Jim's Neighborhood Lounge in Colorado Springs.

Randy Lee Stewart, 70, of La Harpe, Ill., died Thursday, Aug. 10, 2023, at VA Central Iowa in Des Moines.

Born June 18, 1953, in Peoria, Ill., he was the son of Donald Lee and Florence Jesse Wayland Stewart. On Sept. 28, 1985, he married Debra Sue Heuer. They later divorced, but they remained great friends.

He was a veteran of the United States Army. He worked at General Electric in West Burlington for 35 years, retiring in 2009.

Randy was an avid Illini, Chicago Bears, and St. Louis Cardinals fan. He enjoyed riding Harleys, watching old westerns, driving around looking for deer, and video chatting with his grandson, Lucas. He loved his dog, Miles.

He is survived by three children, Deidra (Zach) Fordyce, Adam Stewart, and Kellie (Curt) West; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; four sisters, Shirley Anders, Betty (Ivan) Nichols, Donna (Dave) Mershon, and Mary Lou Stewart; one brother, Donnie Stewart; several nieces and nephews; and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Kimberly Stewart; brother Terry Stewart; and brother-in-law, Dick Anders.

The family will receive friends from noon until 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 15, 2023, at Banks &amp; Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe.

Born March 12, 1936, in Hale, Mo., she was the daughter of Roy Thomas and Carletta M. Gumbo Septer. In June of 1978, she married Caracci in Muscatine. He died July 15, 2013.

Shirley taught herself to play piano and organ. She loved animals and her family.

Survivors include her daughter, Barbara (Jim) Talbott of Burlington; one granddaughter, Kelsey (Jeff) Talbott; three great-grandchildren, Rayden, Aries, and Elyjah; one brother, George Septer of Salem and several nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, daughter Carla Watson and two brothers.

Beulah Maye Perkins, 79, of Burlington, died Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2023, at her home following a short battle with cancer.

Born May 17, 1944, in Industry, Ill., she was the daughter of Howard and Mary Parker Frakes. She married Richard “Dick” Lyle Perkins in Fort Madison on March 16, 1965. He preceded her in death on Sept. 14, 2004.

Beulah worked for Kirlin’s Hallmark for 18 years and for Walgreens for 24 years until her recent illness.

She had a deep love and devotion for her family and loved baking for them and sending them cards and gifts on special occasions. She never forgot an important date. She loved bowling with her friends and adored her cats.

She is survived by her two children; Wanda F. (Nick) Hind of Burlington, Bryan L. (Julie) Perkins of West Burlington; four grandchildren, Andrew (Jessica) Olson of Kansas City, Mo., Alexander Schupick of Myrtle Beach, S.C. and Braydon Perkins and Jared Perkins both of West Burlington; four sisters, Shirley Willeford of Burlington, Sandy Marquis of Rushville, Ill., Mary Lynn (Craig) Bussanmas of Garfield, Ark. and April Vaughn of Macomb, Ill. and numerous nieces and nephews who were very special to her.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Dick, brother Henry Frakes, and sister Norma Jean Pleasant.

Beulah Maye Perkins

Sally Ann Burhop, 80, died Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2023, in her home.

Born Dec. 6, 1942, in Hedrick, she was the daughter of Howard and Betty Reinier Rickey. She married her soulmate Richard Burhop on June 24, 1960, at the First Baptist Church in Muscatine. They were separated only in death when he died Sept. 28, 2021.

Sally owned and operated Dick’s Kerr-McGee gas station, in Muscatine, along with her husband Dick for many years. More recently she worked as a receptionist for Deery Brothers and Autumn Heights.

She was a long-time member of First Baptist Church in Muscatine.

Her husband and children were everything to her. After her children all left the nest, her grandchildren and great grandchildren became the light of her life. Everything revolved around family.

Her family, grandchildren and faith were her life. She loved being outside on the back patio watching the horses and chickens and took great joy in watching her great grandchildren play.

She is survived by her three children; Adam Burhop of Kirksville, Mo., Andy (Diana Bragg) Burhop of Burlington and Amy (Robert) Adams of Aledo, Ill.; eight grandchildren, Cody Adams, Karla Adams, Clint Richers, Samantha Richers, Christian Adams, Heidi Burhop, Jody Burhop and Betsy Tubandt; eleven great grandchildren, with one on the way; three brothers, Charles Rickey and Tony (Janet) Rickey both of Muscatine, and Dean (Brenda) Rickey of Columbus Junction; one sister Cindy (Paul) Tillie of Wapello; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Dick, Sister Ruth Elane and sister-in-law Kathy Rickey.

The funeral service for Mrs. Burhop will be 11 a.m. Friday, August 11 at the High Prairie Methodist Church in Muscatine with Pastor Gary Kahler officiating. Visitation with family will be held one hour prior to the funeral service. Burial will be in the High Prairie Methodist Church Cemetery, Muscatine.

After her children all left the nest, her grandchildren and great grandchildren became the light of her life. Everything revolved around family.Her family, grandchildren and faith were her life. Florence Katherine Bolander, 79, of Burlington, died Monday, Aug. 7, 2023, at Addington Place in Burlington.

Born Dec. 15, 1943, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Ray and Vennessa Kimbrough Penrod. On July 21, 1962, she married Paul Melvin Bolander at the Spring Grove Methodist Church in Des Moines County.&nbsp;

She graduated from Burlington High School.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Florence was a homemaker and worked part time at Hy Vee for over 20 years.

Florence liked to play BINGO, go shopping, and listen to George Strait. She traveled all over the world with her husband, including one especially memorable seven country tour. She always said he'd take her wherever she wanted to go. Florence was a great cook and loved to spend time with her grandchildren. Her family was everything to her.&nbsp;

Survivors include her husband, Paul of Burlington; daughters, Deb Smutzer, Julie (Henry) Harris, and Tina (Chris) Lamb all of Burlington; sons, Tim (Paula) Bolander of Burlington and Bradley (Mandy) Bolander of Oswego, Ill.; 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; sisters, Elsie Stafford and Barb (Gary) Glendenning both of Burlington; brothers, Floyd (Patty) Penrod and Dick Penrod both of Burlington; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Viola (Denny) Patton and Georgianna (Jim) Vantiger; one son-in-law, Greg Smutzer; and two brothers-in-law, Ronald Stafford and Harry Bolander.&nbsp;

Visitation will be from noon until 7 p.m. with the family to receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 10, 2023, at Prugh Funeral Service, 3940 Division Street.&nbsp;

Darlene “Dar” Moffett, 76, of Salem, died Monday, Aug. 7, 2023, at her home after a 16-month battle with pancreatic cancer.

Dar was born March 31, 1947, in Dubuque. She was the daughter of Charles and Adelia &nbsp;Atkinson Adams. She graduated from Auburn High School in Rockford, Ill., in 1965. On Aug. 27, 1966, Dar was united in marriage to Mike Moffett in Rockford, Ill. The couple made their home in the Burlington, Mount Pleasant and Salem communities. Dar worked in the mental health field at locations in Burlington and Mount Pleasant. She enjoyed gardening, picking berries, canning, and showing horses. Mike and Dar volunteered as foster parents. Dar was active in the Burlington High School booster club and Horse Futurities.

Dar was known as “Mom” to so many of her kids’ friends. You never know who would be at the house to eat or sleep. Mike and Dar loved taking road trips together to watch their grandkids play sports all over the United States and if they couldn’t make the trip, they would be cheering them on by watching live streams of games at home.&nbsp;

Dar is survived by her husband Mike; son Erik (Amy) Moffett of Denmark; two daughters Traci (Craig Lewis) Johnson of Bates City, Mo., Nikki (Tyrus) Czeschin of Vestavia Hills, Ala.; seven grandchildren Aubrey and Ava Moffett, Gabe and Zane Czeschin, Kelsey (Clinton) Davis, Brayden and Blake Johnson; one great grandson Crew Davis; brother Dale (Vicki) Adams of Rockton, Ill., Donna (Joe) Kowalewski of Rockford, Ill., Glen Higgenbotham, Peg Johnson; in laws Merritt (Dee) Moffett of New London, Mark (Linda) Moffett of Mount Pleasant, and Beverly Sloan of Eldon.

Francis Dewayne Cross, 78, of Burlington, died Sunday, Aug. 6, 2023, at the Danville Care Center in Danville.

Born April 12, 1945, in Iowa City, he was the son of Ernie and Anna Fielder Cross. On June 28, 1962, he married Anna Avon Adair in Clarinda. She died on June 19, 2019.

Francis was the owner of FC Construction for many years. He and his wife also opened a bar, Frans Place, and later a restaurant, Fran's and Ann's.

He was a worker, he could be found outside working in his yard and garden or hauling things for people. He enjoyed going to and having yard sales and adding to his many collections. He enjoyed taking drives around the area. Most of all he loved to spend time with his family and his cat, Sugar.&nbsp;

Survivors include three sons, Dewayne (Therese) Cross of Burlington, Randy Cross of Middletown, and Brian (Katie) Cross of Plainfield, Ind.; two daughters, Angie (Randy) Crowell of Burlington, and Marsha (Pat) Zahn of Middletown; five grandchildren, Jermie, Casey, Delaney, Anna, and Mariah; five great-grandchildren; one brother, Robert Fielder, and one sister, Vada England.

Besides his wife, Ann Cross, he was preceded in death by his parents and five siblings.&nbsp;

Per his wishes, there will be no services at this time.

Marilyn H. Lewis Anderson, 98, of Burlington, died Sunday, Aug. 6, 2023, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice in West Burlington.

Born Jan. 23, 1925, in West Burlington, she was the daughter of Clarence Philip and Mildred Helen DeWitt Lietsch. On May 22, 1943, she married Floyd E. Lewis at St. Mary's Catholic Church in West Burlington. He died July 7, 1995. On Jan. 1, 1997, she married Clarence W. "Bud" Anderson at Messiah Lutheran Church in Burlington. He died Feb. 21, 2011.

She attended St. Mary's grade school and graduated from St. Paul's Catholic High School.&nbsp;

She was a member of S.S. Mary and Patrick Catholic Church, West Burlington, and was active in their Altar and Rosary Society.&nbsp; She bowled for 25 years with the Senior League in Burlington. She was a member of the Happy Hookers, a sewing club in Chicago. Marilyn was very crafty and could be found sewing, quilting and doing various other craft projects. She enjoyed traveling and camping with her family. She was an avid reader and could always be found with a book in her hands. Her family meant everything to her.&nbsp;

Survivors include her three sons, Mark Lewis of Chillicothe, David Lewis of Burlington, and Andrew (Tina) Lewis of Altoona; two daughters, Jane (Robert) Knoll of Burlington, and Nancy (Ernie) Beeney of Trivoli, Ill.; 18 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; 17 great great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews, and sister-in-law, Sharon Knutson.

Besides her husbands, she was preceded in death by her parents, four sisters, Doris Wiele, De Etta Senn, Elizabeth Karle and Joanne Rodger, and one brother, John Lietsch.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until 12:30 PM Saturday, Aug. 12, 2023, at Divine Mercy Parish-SS. Mary and Patrick Catholic Church, West Burlington.

Marilyn H. Lewis Anderson

She was born on June 27, 1930, the daughter of Walter and Birdie Fleming.&nbsp; She was the 8th&nbsp;of 10 children, and her mom died when she was only 6 years old.&nbsp; It wasn’t until she was a freshman that she arrived at Charlie and Evelyn Davis’ home.&nbsp; Evelyn would become known as “My momma” to Iola, and their family would always be an important part of her life.&nbsp; She was blessed to stay with them in a loving home until she graduated from Clemens High School in 1947.&nbsp; During her high school years, she excelled at sports and music.&nbsp; Music remained a huge part of her life.&nbsp; Whether inciting a family sing-a-long or being an Andy Williams groupie, music was always present.

Iola married Robert Batey in 1955, and they began building a life together, creating a home that was filled with love and lots of activity.&nbsp; Always a nurturer, Iola not only made her children feel secure and loved, she saved any abandoned animal that was brought to her home.

Iola was a constant motion machine.&nbsp; She raised children (in the beginning without indoor plumbing), and maintained a well-ordered household, with beautiful flowerbeds and gardens.&nbsp; She had a gifted mind and provided the foundation for every family business endeavor. Yet, if you visited her home, there was always homemade bread and jam, and a delicious meal ready at a moment’s notice.

She loved a good auction.&nbsp; An avid furniture restorer and antique collector, she became a respected member of that community for her knowledge.&nbsp; Her daughter once asked her, “How do you know so much about this stuff?”&nbsp; And she replied, “They weren’t antiques when I was using them.”

Iola never needed the limelight.  She just had a strong work ethic that she needed to satisfy her own personal goals.  She wasn’t a self-promoter, but she was a promoter of all the people she loved.&nbsp;

She is survived by her children, Gary (Donna) Batey, Cynda (Tom) Kinnemann, Kathleen Batey, Ted (Peggy) Batey, Scott Batey, Tim (Kerry) Batey, Todd (Deb) Batey, Sally (Alan Miller-deceased) Johnson, and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.

Iola was preceded in death by her husband Robert and her siblings.&nbsp;

The funeral service will be held&nbsp;10:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 12, 2023&nbsp;at the First Presbyterian Church in Mount Pleasant. Burial will be in the Forest Home Cemetery. Burial will be in the Forest Home Cemetery. Visitation will be held&nbsp;2 to 7 p.m. Friday, August 11, at Olson-Powell Chapel &amp; Crematory, family will be present to greet friends&nbsp;beginning at 5 p.m.&nbsp;In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established for the MPCSD Music Boosters.&nbsp;

Zelda “Sam” Caroline Ehlers Inman,92, died Sunday, Aug. 6, 2023.

She was the daughter of Arthur Fredrick Ehlers and Karoline Schwartz Ehlers. She was born at home Dec. 6, 1930, on the Arthur Ehlers family farm (still in the family) 4 miles South of Arcadia, Iowa. In December she was baptized in the Lutheran faith at Zion Lutheran Church in Arcadia, Iowa by the Reverend Theo Tews. She was confirmed in 1944 in Zion Lutheran in Arcadia. She attended a one-room country school and then graduated in 1949 from Arcadia High School.

On June 26, 1949, she married Harvey Kienast at the Zion Lutheran Church by the Reverend Theo Tews in Arcadia.

In 1954 she moved to the Arthur Ehlers farm near Denison. Living on the farm she milked cows by hand and did other chores the old-fashioned way. For the last two years she did the farming by herself and took the kids to Zion Lutheran Parochial School in Denison, while her husband Harvey worked at the factory in Denison.

In 1966 the family moved to Burlington, where Sam owned and operated a motel for several years. She was a member of Concordia Lutheran Church in Burlington.

He died Aug. 27, 2016. They were very much in love and very compatible. She played drums with Jim Inman and Westerners Band, playing three nights a week. Jim and Sam worked daytime jobs as well for several years. Sam owned and managed the Inman’s Country Diamond in Gulfport, Ill.In Burlington, she worked in home health, at McKesson &amp; Robbins and was the booking agent for the band. She worked as an alcohol and drug counselor for ADDS (Alcohol Drug Dependency Service) retiring at the age of 72 years old with 15 years of service.At Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, she was very active in the Ladies Aide Society, always willing to help. She believed in helping people on the farms and organized farmers to come and plant corn, pick it or whatever the season was whenever someone was injured or seriously ill. She donated their band to play benefits for injured or seriously sick or a death to help with expenses.She is survived by her eight children Vickie (Greg) Lee, Linda (Gary) Virgin, Ronald Kienast, Kim Kienast (daughter-in-law) all of Burlington. Darrell Inman of Sherrard, Ill., Alicia Haupt of Goofy Ridge, Ill., Elaine (Tom) Roundtree of Milan, Ill., Raymond (Sarah) Inman of Coal Valley, Ill., and Jami Renee Inman-Bell (Elliott Bell) of Gotha, Fla. She also raised two grandchildren Andrea Lane and David Jacob Mathias and great-granddaughter Kinley Mathias; 32 grandchildren; 60 great-grandchildren; eight great-great grandchildren.She was preceded in death by her parents, grandparents, husbands, four children Kristi Renee Kienast, John Arthur Kienast, Lori Lynn Kienast, and Donnie Inman; daughter-in-law Juli Inman; three brothers Marvin Ehlers in infancy, Alvin Ehlers and his wife Valeria Ehlers of Clinton, Glen and his wife Shirley Ehlers of Arcadia; sisters-in-law Edna Pullen, Shirley Kohl and Judy Inman and one brother-in-law Ron Inman.Jim Inman was the love of her life. They enjoyed spending a lot of time together. They played with the band at the Steamboat Senior Center for the last 26 years for dances. She played drums for the last seven years at the center.The funeral service for Mrs. Inman will be held at Concordia Lutheran Church at 10 a.m., Wednesday, August 9 with Pastor Christopher Roepke officiating. Interment will follow in Aspen Grove Cemetery. The family will receive friends 5 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, August 8 at Lunning Chapel with a service of the word following visitation.Memorials have been established for Concordia, Lutheran Church, Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House, and the Senior Citizen Center.
