Kenneth Ray Klenk, 84, of Burlington, died Monday, Sept. 18, 2023, at the Bickford Cottage in Burlington.

Born Dec. &nbsp;30, 1938, in Oakville, he was the son of Russell Ray and Floreine Cornelia Cover Klenk. On Oct. 12, 1957, he married Judith "Judy" &nbsp;Smith in Burlington.

He was a graduate of Huron High School class of 1957.

Kenny was a member of the Cattlemen and Pork Producers Associations. He attended the First Baptist Church in Mediapolis, and was baptized in the Cedar River at age 14. He coached little league, collected &nbsp;arrow heads, enjoyed 4 wheeling in the mountains, camping and many trips to Colorado. Kenny loved his grandkids, tinkering around, fixing anything if somebody needed help. He would do anything for anybody. Kenny was a life long farmer, and worked for Des Moines County Drainage District #7 for 50 years.&nbsp;

Survivors include wife, Judith "Judy" Klenk of Burlington; two sons, Kory (Rhonda) Klenk and Kenton (Jill) Klenk both of Mediapolis; daughter, Kaci (Scott) Van Dalen of Ft. Collins, Co.; &nbsp;son-in-law, Bryan Cox of Moravia; eleven grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren and one on the way; brother, Richard Lee (Jean) Klenk of Burlington and sister, Janice Rose (Bill) Brown of New London.

He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Kelli, and one brother, Gary Klenk.

Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 25, 2023 at Prugh Funeral Service, 3940 Division Street Burlington.

The funeral service for Mr. Klenk will be 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 25, 2023, at Prugh Funeral Service, with Pastor Dan Baker officiating. &nbsp;Burial will be in Kossuth Cemetery. &nbsp;A time of food and fellowship will be held at Clover Creek Event Venue in Mediapolis.

A memorial has been established for the Mediapolis Fire Department and Ambulance Services.

Andrea Nuku Burke, 45, of Burlington, died Sept. 12, 2023, at Great River Hospice House in West Burlington. &nbsp;Andrea was born July 23, 1978, in Iowa City, to Denise Jean Burke Daniel of East Moline, Ill., and the late Willie Howard Walker of Rock Island, Ill.&nbsp;

Andrea was a 1996 graduate of West Burlington High School and attended college at Southeastern Community College in West Burlington.&nbsp; Andrea was very proud to be a part of the original "Fun City Crew" when it opened for business in Dec. 2005 in Burlington.&nbsp; As a natural leader, Andrea earned a promotion to a supervisory position and held the title of Event Coordinator for the remainder of her twelve-year tenure with Great River Entertainment.&nbsp; 

In October 2017, Andrea became the Human Resources Administrator at USG in Mediapolis, where&nbsp;she "put the human in the resources" as she always said.&nbsp;Ask anyone who has worked with Andrea over the years, and they will tell you that she is unforgettable, when in fact, it was Andrea who&nbsp;remembered everyone's name, their family's names, when they married and had their babies.&nbsp; Andrea made it a point to genuinely find a way to help people in their personal and professional lives. Many of the recruits she took under her wing at Fun City and USG are thriving in their respective careers today.&nbsp;

Andrea was a natural nurturer - babies would just melt in her presence. "Bring me all the babies!" she'd say. Everyone, even complete strangers, were drawn to Andrea's natural ability to love and regularly found themselves pouring their heart out to her. So many of us will carry her love, kindness, and words of wisdom with us all the days of our lives.&nbsp;

She loved reading, gardening, crafting, and throwing the best parties for any occasion - because making people feel special was her specialty. She absolutely loved cheering on all of the kids at their sporting events and made it her mission to be a part of celebrating her friends and family, be it a graduation, wedding, or birthday. Whether she was cutting letters for banners, making tutus, or throwing candy from a parade - she always found a way to celebrate. Of all the things Andrea loved about life - being in the moment with her three children was undoubtedly her favorite.&nbsp;&nbsp;

One of Andrea's famous expressions is "I love you more". She made sure everyone knew she loved them, not more than they loved her but more than the toughest times they would go through, more than any argument they could ever have, more than any distance between them and any obstacle they would ever face.&nbsp; She fought to stay here with her loved ones as long as she could. We will only ever say "see you soon" instead of goodbye. May she rest peacefully in heaven until we meet again.&nbsp;&nbsp; Andrea requested that her family and friends come together to celebrate her life rather than mourn her death. We will honor her wishes with a celebration of life to be held in October (additional details will be released at a later date).

Janet Lee Wagg, 87, of Burlington, died Sunday, Sept. 17, 2023, at the Azria Health Prairie Ridge in Mediapolis.

Born May 8, 1936, in Muscatine, she was the daughter of Donald (Doc) and Virginia &nbsp;Hagens Martin. On Sept. 26, 1953, she married George Ivan Wagg in Muscatine. He passed on June 20, 2013.

She was a 1954 graduate of Muscatine High School.&nbsp;

Janet worked for 30 years in customer service for Hy-Vee #1, retiring in 1992.

She was member of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and the Red Hat Society. She enjoyed going to yard sales, baking, sewing and spending time on the river. She enjoyed hosting house parties and pinochle games. Most of all, Janet loved watching her grandkids, spending time with her family.

Survivors include her sons, Randy (Cindy) Wagg, and Ron (Kris) Wagg both of Mediapolis; four grandchildren, Ben (Amanda) Wagg, Jenny (Mark Hargrave) Wagg, Eli Wagg, and Caleb (Lynette) Wagg; eight great-grandchildren, Colton, James, Brock, Maycee, Georgie, Oggie, Abby and, Kadence; step-sister, Chris Martin of Muscatine; sister-in-law, Judy Martin of Cedar Falls and several nieces and nephews.&nbsp;

Besides her husband of 59 years, she was preceded in death by her parents, brother, Larry Martin and her sister, Barbara Hudson.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh Crematory.

Larry Edsel Edgington, 73, of Mount Pleasant, formerly of New London, died Thursday, September 14, 2023 at The University of Iowa Hospitals, Iowa City.

He was born in Burlington on Sept. 30, 1949 to Edsel Burl and Carla Jean Kinsinger Edgington.&nbsp;&nbsp;He was a 1967 graduate of New London High School and graduated from Iowa Wesleyan College.&nbsp;&nbsp;

On Sept. 21, 2022, he married Tina June Jenkins at East Lake Park, Mount. Pleasant.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;He was a member of St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, Mount Pleasant, and attended New London Christian Church.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Larry was a farmer, worked as a Transportation Dispatcher, and drove a school bus for Mount Pleasant School District.&nbsp;&nbsp;He enjoyed gardening, hunting, mushroom hunting and walking in the forest.&nbsp;&nbsp;He loved spending time with family and was an avid Chicago Bears fan.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Survivors include his wife; stepdaughter Amber Jenkins of Mount Pleasant; sons Shane of Windsor, Colorado, Christopher of Burlington, Brandon of Iowa City, Jacob (Katie) of Manchester, John of Mount Pleasant, and Jediah of Mount Pleasant; eight grandchildren, Patrick, Olivia, Madison, Miles, Jonah, Maren, Isla and Finnegan; one great-grandson Kaden; two sisters, Roma Edgington and Pam Wick, both of New London; two brothers, Wendell of Fort Madison and Ferlin of New London; aunts; and nieces and nephews.&nbsp;&nbsp;He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Gary.

A graveside memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Sept. 30, 2023, at Jaggar Cemetery, Danville. Rebecca Ann Parcell, 65, of West Burlington, died Saturday, Sept. 16, 2023, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.

Born March 4, 1958, in Macomb, Ill., she was the daughter of Charles William and Charylene Parks Dixon. She married John Parcell on March 14, 2008.

Rebecca worked as a CNA and Medical Aide for many years. She attended Burlington First Assembly of God.

She was a wonderful woman who always looked out for others, above herself. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother.

Survivors include her husband, of West Burlington; four children, Sonia (Tim) York of Burlington, Tonia Lynn (De) Washington of Madison, Tennessee, Scott Paul Simpson of Montezuma, Iowa and Robert (Debbie) Herbert of Abington, Vir.; nine grandchildren; seven great grandchildren and two brothers, David Charles (Joann) Dixon of Galesburg, Ill. and Duane Eugene (Dana) Dixon of Sedalia, Mo.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

A private family inurnment will be held on Friday, September 22 at Aspen Grove Cemetery. According to her wishes, cremation has been entrusted to the care of Lunning Chapel.

Marc Keith Siebrecht, 38 of Burlington, died Saturday Sept. 16, 2023, peacefully surrounded by his family at Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in West Burlington.

Born Nov. &nbsp;28, 1984, in Storm Lake, Iowa, he was the son of Keith and Jill Wick Siebrecht.

Marc graduated from Odebolt Arthur High School and received his degree in Finance and Real Estate from the University of Northern Iowa.

He married Jennifer Ann Rich on Aug. 1, 2015, in Burlington.

Marc was director of Commodity Risk Management for Indiana Packers of Delphi, Ind.

He attended Faith Church in Lafayette, Ind.

He enjoyed golfing, playing with the kids, movies, football, farming, and going on walks with Jen.

Survivors include his wife Jen of Burlington; his two children Maverick and Shelby at home; brother Britt Siebrecht of Odebolt, Iowa; his parents Keith and Jill Siebrecht of Odebolt, Iowa; in-laws Tony and Liz Rich of Burlington; sister-in-law &amp; brother-in-law Aleesha (Neil) Gorrell of Burlington; niece and nephew Sophie &amp; Jack Gorrell.

He was preceded in death by his maternal &amp; paternal grandparents.

The funeral service for Marc will be 3 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 20, 2023, at Parkside First Baptist Church in Burlington with Pastor Bill Price officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Interment graveside services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 23 in Odebolt Cemetery, Odebolt, Iowa. A memorial has been established for his children’s education.

Mabel Irene Houston, 93, of Burlington, died Thursday, Sept. 14, 2023, at Parkview Manor in Wellman.

Born May 11, 1930, in Hancock County, Ill., she was the daughter of Frank and Alma Neil Felgar and step-mother Helen.

Irene attended Hamilton High School in Hamilton, Ill..&nbsp; She was a lifelong production worker before retiring in 2008. After retiring, she worked for Speed Queen Laundry in Burlington for 15 years.

Irene was a member of the Eagles club and Moose Lodge in Burlington.&nbsp; She enjoyed crocheting, gardening, and growing flowers.&nbsp; She enjoyed her work at the laundromat where she developed many friendships.&nbsp; Irene loved spending time with her grandchildren.

Survivors include a son Clifford (Kelly) Houston of Missouri; two daughters Barbara (Richard) Thomas of Pasadena, Calif. and Donna Clifford of Burlington, seven grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother Charles (Marge) Felgar of Keokuk, two sisters, Trudy (Dale) Best of Woodland, California, and Esther (Truman) Jinst of Florida; one stepbrother Bill Marshall of Carthage, Ill.; one stepsister Shirley De of Marengo, &nbsp;and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral service for Ms. Houston will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 20, 2023, at Lunning Chapel with Rev. David Mixon officiating.&nbsp; The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until the time of service. Interment will follow at Oakwood Cemetery in Hamilton, Ill.

Chad Lynn Young, 57, of Burlington, died Sunday, Sept. 10, 2023, at the University of Iowa Hospital.

Chad was born on February 22, 1966, in Keokuk. &nbsp;He was the son of Bill and Joan Young Hayden. Chad grew up in Kahoka, Mo., and later moved to Iowa. He married Bobbi Daniels (Marshall) in 1988 and had three daughters: Amber, Stephanie, and Emilee. &nbsp;They divorced in 1997. &nbsp;In December 2004, Chad married the love of his life, Lynn Peterson. They spent twenty-one wonderful years together.

Chad had the biggest heart and would help anyone who needed it. Chad was a hardworking man, and always seemed to stay busy. He enjoyed scrapping and was known as “Master Scrapper”. He enjoyed watching anything with John Wayne and shows like Bonanza, My Cousin Vinny, and any sports team that is from Missouri. &nbsp;Most of all, Chad loved his wife, children and grandchildren.

Survivors include wife, Lynn Young; six daughters: Amee (Tom) Wyatt, Jessica Simerl, Ashley Reed, Amber (Coyte) Todd, Stephanie (Zach) Nall, Emilee Young.&nbsp; Extended family; Matt (Stacy) Tansey, Brandon Tansey, Genera Tansey, Kyler Engen, and Kyle Sharp; twenty-four grandchildren; one great-grandchild; brothers, Mike Young and Carl Hayden; two nieces, several aunts and uncles, cousins and a good friend, Tyron Mack.

He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, his brother Larry Hayden, and several aunts and uncles.

In honor of Chad’s wishes, he continued to help others through the gift of organ donation. Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh Crematory.

A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, Sept. 30, 2023, at &nbsp; VFW in Kahoka, Mo. (23062 E Main St apt 7, Kahoka, MO 63445) from 1 to 4 p.m.

Margaret&nbsp; “Moogie” Martenson Els, 64, died Sept. 7, 2023, in&nbsp; Bonn, Germany, following a&nbsp; nearly two-year battle with cancer.

She was born Oct. 2, 1958, in Burlington, the daughter of&nbsp; Robert “Bob” and Dorothy “Dolly”&nbsp; Martenson.

Like hundreds of area children in the 1950s and 1960s, she grew up in Iowa Army Ammunition Plant housing in Middletown, where her father worked for the Atomic Energy Commission. As a teen, she moved with her family to Danville, where her parents built an apple orchard they operated for nearly three decades.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Margaret attended the now-gone St. Paul Grade School in Burlington and graduated from Notre Dame High School.

She attended Drake University for a year and spent a year studying in Dublin, Ireland. She became a paralegal and worked for Shuttleworth and Ingersoll law firm in Cedar Rapids. While attending the University of Iowa, she met her future husband Heinrich (Heiner) Els, a doctoral candidate visiting the university’s hydraulics engineering department.

They were married in St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Burlington on July 11, 1987, and made their home in Germany thereafter, first in Aachen and for the next 36 years in Bonn.

Margaret did charitable work, was vitally interested in politics, and was a prolific, passionate gardener — the latter a love and gift inherited from her mother.

She and Heiner spent many summer vacations sailing their sloop “Harle” on Europe’s seas. They traveled often and made many lasting friendships. They visited her parents in Iowa often over the years and hosted her parents on several memorable tours of Germany and Europe.

Margaret is survived by her husband, Heiner Els, at home in Bonn; her mother-in-law Gisela Valerie Els, who is 100 years old and still in good health; two sisters, Kitty Martenson, Las Vegas, Nev., and Mary Mertens, Des Moines; nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother Rick Martenson; her sister-in-law Eva Marie Sagner, who died in 2012; and her father-in-law Heinrich Alfons Els, who died in 1984.

Margaret’s ashes will be buried under the family tree in the Hummel Forest, a preserve for ancient beech trees in the Eiffel National Park in western Germany.

A memorial gathering, or rather as Margaret wished, a “happy get together of friends and family”&nbsp; will be held sometime in October.&nbsp;

Franklin &nbsp;Lee "Frank" Lombard, 59, of Burlington, died Sunday, Sept. 10, 2023, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born May 20, 1964, in Omaha, Neb., he was the son of James Lombard and Beverly White Baker. He married Billie Piper on Aug. 24, 1996.

Frank worked as a Q&amp;A Inspector for Tyson Foods for 32 years.

He loved going to the casino, golfing, mushrooming, and watching Nebraska and the Kansas City Chiefs football and the Kansas City Royals baseball games, especially during Sunday family dinners. He loved buying and setting off fireworks and cuddling with his cat Midnight.

He is survived by his wife, Billie Lombard; two daughters, Monica (Robert) Maring and Amber (Chet) McBride and two grandchildren, Wyatt McBride and Kole McBride all of Burlington; and two brothers, Richard (Jessica) Baker of Kansas City, Mo. and Steven Baker of Lincoln, Neb..

The funeral service for Mr. Lombard will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 13 at Lunning Chapel. Pastor Ron Jewett will officiate. Visitation with family will be held from 4 p.m. until the time of service on Wednesday.

According to his wishes, cremation will follow the funeral services, and has been entrusted to the care of Lunning Chapel.

Franklin Lee "Frank" Lombard

Shirley Ann Edwards, 84, of Canton, Georgia (formerly of Carman, Ill., Burlington, and Morning Sun), died May 27, 2023, surrounded by her family and loved ones. She was born in Burlington Oct. 27, 1938, to the late Loren and Myrtle Leaverton Booten.

Shirley was a devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, niece, and cousin. She was known for her vivacious spirit, her delightful sense of humor, and her compassion and generosity towards others.

Shirley married Rodney L. Ford in November 1955. Rodney died in 1978.

She later married Leroy (Friday) Edwards in July 1993. Leroy passed away in 2014.

Shirley was a member of the Burlington Eagle’s Club and Women’s Auxiliary, Burlington Elks Club, and Burlington Moose Lodge. She enjoyed traveling, cooking, golfing, gardening, planting flowers, and spending time with friends and family.

She is preceded in death by her parents, and her siblings Raymond Booten and Frances (Jack) Lewis.

She is survived by her daughters Debra Williams, LeClaire, Tina (Mark) Wiegard, O’Fallon, Mo., Rhonda Harris, Canton, Ga., Simone (Greg) Ford, Griggsville, Ill., and Stacey Ford, Mount Pleasant; two stepsons, Leslie and Michael Edwards; six grandchildren, Tiffanie, Nyssa, Laykin, Alex, Danielle, and Trey; four great-grandchildren, Noah, Libbie, Kaitlyn, and Zahcari; sisters, Joanne Schrader, Lorain Bishop, and Laura Cox; brother Loren (Sandra) Booten; aunt Mary Hitchcock along with many other loving relatives.

Shirley requested a celebration of life be held in her honor as opposed to traditional funeral services. Nancy Wanda Miller, 76, of New London, died Saturday, Aug. 19, 2023, at Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House, West Burlington.&nbsp;&nbsp;She was born Nov. 12, 1946, in Burlington to Wallace Carroll and Virginia Elaine Helphrey Riepe.&nbsp;&nbsp;She was a 1965 graduate of New London High School and was a member of the New London Presbyterian Church.&nbsp;&nbsp;

On June 19, 1966, she married Ronald Ervin Miller in New London.&nbsp;&nbsp;Nan was a homemaker and enjoyed crafting, sewing, baking, gardening, tending her flowers, and attending her children’s and grandchildren’s activities and events.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Besides her husband Ron, she is survived by two daughters, Lena (Michael) Jones of New London and Rachel (Jason) Huegel of Ankeny; four grandchildren, Tate and Morgan Jones, and Ev and Jayden Huegel; one sister Carol (Donald) Miller of Washington, Iowa; nieces and nephews.&nbsp;&nbsp;She was preceded in death by her parents and sister Judith in infancy.

Nancy Wanda Miller

Maria Doud, 97, of Burlington, died Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2023, at Azria Health Prairie Ridge in Mediapolis.

Born June 6, 1926, in Foggia, Italy, she was the daughter of Angelo and Concetta Chinquepalmi. She was the eldest of seven children. She married Ralph Doud in Foggia, Italy, in 1945.

She came to the United States as a war bride in 1946 and lived most of her life in Keosauqua. She worked at Van Buren County Hospital as a nurse’s aide for 30 years.

She had three children, Angelo (Rhonda) Doud of Burlington, Donna (Donny) DeJaynes of Gladstone, Illinois and Tony (Rhonda J.) Doud of Burlington.

She loved her family, dancing, and music.

Maria Doud

Alicia Ann Kelley, 79, of Johnston, passed away peacefully on Aug. 29, 2023, following her courageous battle with Alzheimer’s.

Born on June 29, 1944, in Des Moines, Alicia was the daughter of Arthur and Darlene Hueschen. Her childhood was spent in Danville, Iowa, where she shared cherished moments with her sister and brother on the family farm. One of her favorite childhood memories was riding and caring for her beloved horse, Lady.&nbsp;

Alicia graduated from Danville High School in 1962 before relocating to Des Moines. Alicia married Donald R. Geisler in 1969 and had two children: Scott and Stefanie. They later divorced. On Jan. 10, 1998, she married Lennis D. Kelley, with whom she recently celebrated 25 years of marriage.

Alicia will be remembered for her big heart and always caring for the people around her. When she wasn’t spoiling her kids and grandkids,	she loved spending time tending to her flower gardens, or making beautiful quilts for the family. The game of golf also held a special place in her heart; she was a skilled golfer who relished friendly competition with friends in many leagues throughout the years.&nbsp;

Apart from being a wonderful homemaker, Alicia took pride in her successful wallpapering business and later her sales position in the Des Moines area, and was known for her meticulous attention to detail on every project. Above all, Alicia had her faith and she was an active member of her church community in Burlington, where she made many friends.

Alicia will be missed by her husband, Lennis Kelley, and their loving dog Smokey; her son and daughter-in-law, Scott Geisler and Jennifer WendtGeisler, and their children, Grayson, Ronan, and Calder, North Liberty; her daughter and son-in-law, Stefanie and Lee Bailey, and their children, Josh and Kate, Urbandale; her stepdaughter and stepson-in-law, Christina and Brad Dalton, and their children, Logan, Jadenn, Runey, Griffen, and Bri, Independence, Mo.; her stepdaughter and stepson-in-law, Darcy and Alex Sherwood, and their children, Spencer and Sydney, Iowa City; and her stepson and stepdaughter-in-law, Duane and Lindi Kelley, and their children, Jack and Liam, Shawnee, Kan.; her sister, Marie Richards and her husband Bob, New London; and her brother, John Hueschen, Burlington.

A private prayer service and inurnment will be held at a later date at Prairie Grove Cemetery	in Prairie Grove.

The family is grateful to the caregivers at WesleyLife Hospice and the staff at Brio of Johnston for taking care of Alicia over the past two years. Thank you.

Thomas Warren Dowell, 63, of Burlington, died Friday, Aug. 25, 2023, at his residence.

Born Feb. 2, 1960, in Burlington, he was the son of Cleo Ben and Muriel Thomas Dowell. He married Juliann Curry. They later divorced.

Tom enjoyed doing yard work and growing plants, tinkering on cars and his Harley Davidson motorcycle. He was a very social person, and was loved by all who knew him. He was a kind man and loved the time he spent with his children and family.

He is survived by his four children; Jake Willits of Pensacola, Fla., Kandi Dowell and Kara Dowell both of Des Moines, and Adam Gulick of Burlington; six siblings, Thresa Snowden of Burlington, Roger Dowell of Lomax, Ill., Tanya Chewning of Kirkwood, Ill., Dawn Reverend of Burlington, Marsha Trout of Illinois and Christina McLaury of Mobile, Ala.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Richard Dowell, Randall Dowell and Benny Dowell, one sister, Joan Gerling and half-sister Linda Porter.

A celebration of life with a luncheon to follow on Saturday, Sept. 9 at Union Baptist FGF, 200 Central Street, Burlington. All friends and family are invited. Burial will be in Stronghurst Cemetery, Stronghurst, Ill. at a later date.

Thomas Ray Lankford, 78, died Sunday, Sept. 3, 2023, at Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in West Burlington.

Born Sept. 11, 1944, he was the son of Inez Tisor Lankford, and Chelza Ted Lankford.

He was a 1963 graduate of BHS. In Aug. 1965, he married Terry Wakeford. They later divorced. In June 1986, he married, Shirley Anliker Kirby. He worked for Murray Iron Works as an assemblyman and road man from 1964 until his retirement in 2011.

He loved the river; fast boats; fishing and trapshooting. He was of the Christian faith.

He is survived by his wife Shirley of 37 years, one son Robert T. Lankford of Sarasota, Fla., one stepson Larry (Lisa) Kirby of Burlington, one sister, Marilyn (Susie) Timmerman of Burlington, three grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister Darlene Waring and two brothers-in-law.

Per his request, his body has been deeded to the University of Iowa, and there will be no services.

Kevin Wayne Springsteen

Kelly Edward Walgren, 65, of Wapello, died peacefully at the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics surrounded by his family on Sept. 2, 2023, after a battle with cancer.

He fought the disease to the very end with an amazing attitude, positive outlook, and incredible

strength and stamina after dozens of chemotherapy and radiation treatments. He never complained and made the best out of his situation, even taking a trip to visit his cousin Ron in Hawaii in September of 2022.

Kelly was born in Mount Pleasant, Iowa, on Oct. 16, 1957, to Mary Ellen and Stanley Walgren. He lived his early life in New London and moved to Wapello when he was in high school.&nbsp;

As a kid, he was a daredevil. He could do a 1½ dive with a full twist from the high dive; he liked to ride motorcycles; and he still holds the Wapello school record in the pole vault.&nbsp;

As a man, Kelly was an outdoorsman. He loved fishing in his grandfather’s boat or hunting for rocks or mushrooms. He was hardworking, a jack-of-all-trades, and there was nothing he couldn’t fix. He had a big heart who liked to help people. With all that energy, it’s no wonder he could take a nap anytime and anywhere!&nbsp;

He worked at Monsanto for over 20 years and later for Ecklund and Pforts Construction and Allworth Contracting.

Kelly was a dedicated family man who loved his daughters, Abbey and Lacey, his grandchildren, and all his family. Taken from us too soon and already missing him are his daughters, Abigail Walgren of Morning Sun and Lacey (Anthony) Newsom of Oakville; mother, Mary Ellen of Wapello; brothers Tom (Shawn) of Muscatine and Tim (Michelle) of Quincy, IL; grandchildren AJ, Jaxon, Grace, and Tailinn Newsom; and nieces and nephews Jordan (Mark) Meyer, Alexandra (Luke) Rauenbuehler, Ryan (Lauren) Walgren, and Mitchell Walgren.&nbsp;

He was preceded in death by his maternal and paternal grandparents and his father, Stanley.

Born Oct. 14, 1925, in Warsaw, Ill, she was the daughter of Henry A. and Mary J. Glass Wenzel. On Jan. 26, 1952, she married Levi Ray Smith in Keokuk. He later died Sept. 26, 1996.

Bernice graduated from Warsaw High School.

Bernice worked at St Francis Care Center as a nurse aid for 29 years, retiring in 1988. She walked to and from work each day, no matter the weather.

She loved to be outdoors; either working in her yard or gardens or going for her daily walks around town. &nbsp;She enjoyed crossword puzzles and dancing. Bernice will be remembered for being a kind and giving person.&nbsp;

Survivors include her children, Debbie (Ronald) Freitag, Jerry (Marda) Smith and Raymond Smith all of Burlington; five grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.&nbsp;

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters Rita Wenzel, Annamae Gibson, Kathryn Haas. two brothers Henry Wenzel, Joseph Wenzel and two grandsons Aaron Freitag and Eli Smith.

Malcolm Ira Powers, 76, of Iowa City, formerly of Danville, died March 19, 2023 at University Hospital, Iowa City.

Malcolm was born Feb. 16, 1947 and graduated Danville High School 1966. He retired from Iowa City Transit after 30 years. He is survived by brother Guy and son Aaron.

Malcolm Ira Powers

Desmond Lee Kulp Jr., 87, of Fort Madison, died Saturday, Aug. 26, 2023, at the Birkwood Village of Fort Madison.

Born June 18, 1936, in Columbus City, he was the son of Desmond Lee Sr. and Marion Clyde Hanft Kulp. He married Mary “Tudy” Breuer on Nov. 26, 1960. They later divorced.

Desmond served in the Marine Corps from 1953-1955. He owned and operated Lee’s Equipment Repair for many years and then worked for Hertz Crane Rental. After his retirement, he managed a storage facility in Kemah, Texas.

He was an avid reader. After his retirement, he enjoyed sailing all throughout the Caribbean and Aruba. He was an experienced diver and loved underwater photography.

He is survived by his daughter, Kristina Bernhardt of Fort Madison; granddaughter Tabitha Nuss of Des Moines, and sister Judy Bloyd of Waterloo.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one son Jeff Kulp and one sister Jeanine Storks.

Visitation will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 31 at Lunning Chapel where the family will receive friends. Burial will follow the visitation at Aspen Grove Cemetery.

A memorial has been established for the P.A.W.S. animal shelter of Fort Madison.

 </figure>Desmond Lee Kulp Jr., 87, of Fort Madison, died Saturday, Aug. 26, 2023, at the Birkwood Village of Fort Madison.Born June 18, 1936, in Columbus City, he was the son of Desmond Lee Sr. and Marion Clyde Hanft Kulp. He married Mary “Tudy” Breuer on Nov. 26, 1960. They later divorced.Desmond served in the Marine Corps from 1953-1955. He owned and operated Lee’s Equipment Repair for many years and then worked for Hertz Crane Rental. After his retirement, he managed a storage facility in Kemah, Texas.He was an avid reader. After his retirement, he enjoyed sailing all throughout the Caribbean and Aruba. He was an experienced diver and loved underwater photography.He is survived by his daughter, Kristina Bernhardt of Fort Madison; granddaughter Tabitha Nuss of Des Moines, and sister Judy Bloyd of Waterloo.He was preceded in death by his parents, one son Jeff Kulp and one sister Jeanine Storks.Visitation will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 31 at Lunning Chapel where the family will receive friends.
