David Frederick Hamlin, 53, of West Burlington, died Monday, Oct. 28, 2024, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in West Burlington. Born Jan. 11, 1971, in Iowa City, he was the son of Jack Frederick and Sharon Kay Jones Hamlin.&nbsp;

David worked as a material handler at Winegard, and also part time at Walmart.

He loved to spend time in the peace of the outdoors; especially camping, fishing and hunting. &nbsp;David also enjoyed reading. &nbsp;David will be remembered for his friendship, and as a man who enjoyed his solitude.&nbsp;

Family includes his mother, Sharon Kay Hamlin; two children, Joshua Ball, and Kayla Hamlin; two sisters, Sharon Kaye (Jerry) Masching, and Kimberly Bohannan; nieces and nephews, Rene (Dustin), Christina (Jason), and Jacob; and five great nieces and nephews.&nbsp;

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh Crematory.

David's family will receive guests for visitation from 4 to 6 p.m,., Friday, Nov. 1, 2024, at Prugh Funeral Service, 3940 Division Street.

David Frederick Hamlin

Mr. James&nbsp; L."Jim" Garnjobst, 87, of Burlington, died on Monday, Oct. 28, 2024 at his home. Born April 12, 1937, In Yankton, S. D., he was the son Jerome Geoffrey and Marjorie Kathryn Jordan Garnjobst. The family moved to Burlington, when Jim was a month old.

Jim attended Burlington schools and graduated from BHS in 1955. When he was 17, he and five or six friends lied about their ages and volunteered for duty with the Forest Service in Wyoming, and returned the next summer for another “tour of duty.” In 1959, resisting advice to settle down and go to college, Jim and a couple buddies drove the long way to California, found jobs selling shoes and lived in a house on Newport Beach. They went to Sunday concerts by Stan Kenton and his band at Orange County Junior Colleges by borrowing student IDs from students in the closest bar.

By 1961 the Draft Board tracked him down and he returned to Burlington to enlist in the Iowa National Guard. He spent more than a few Springs on flood duty and enrolled in the Iowa Military Academy to become an officer. He later served as Commandant of IMA. He stayed in the National Guard for 24 Years, retiring as a Brigadier General.

He started his career at Mason &amp; Hangar in 1962 as an Inspector, worked up through the ranks, and was named Plant Manager in 1995. In 2000 he was promoted to Vice-President of Marketing for Mason &amp; Hangar.

He married Virginia M. Martin on Oct. 5, 1963, in Burlington. They were married for 62 years. Jim was on the Riverfront Advisory Committee in the early days of debating/discussing saving the Port of Burlington building, and advised entrepreneurs and start-up businesses in S.C.O.R.E. until the office was closed by the Small Business Administration. He was a long-time member of Kiwanis, coordinating the Nurses Program for over 13 years, and of Carthage Lake Club, serving in various roles, including President when Club House burned to the ground in the late 1990s. His all-time favorite retirement activity was taking week-long fishing trips for over 25 years.

Jim is survived by his wife Virginia, two sons, Jordan M. Garnjobst of Macomb, Ill. and Joseph S. Garnjobst of Hillsdale, Michigan, brother Richard Garnjobst of Burlington, and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded I death by his parents, one brother Tom, and two sisters, Karen and Ann.

Visitation will be held Saturday, Nov. 2, 2024, at Lunning Chapel. The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 pm. Burial will be at a later date in Aspen Grove Cemetery followed by a celebration of life at Carthage Lake Club.

Doris Elizabeth Cordill, 83, died Monday, Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2024, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in West Burlington. Born Jan. 29, 1941, to William J. and Bertha Fischer Cordill in Burlington.

She graduated from Oakville Consolidated High School in 1960 and started her long office career. She retired in January of 2022, having been employed by Drake Hardware, Kacina Equipment, Delzell Motors and S&amp;G Construction Co.

She was a member of the Burlington Apostolic Christian Church.

She enjoyed traveling, nature, tending to many flower beds as well as hosting many gatherings of family and friends during her lifetime prior to declining health.

Surviving are two brothers; John W. Cordill of Oakville, Iowa and Leroy (Karla) Cordill of Bartlesville, Okla., along with niece Jennifer (Taylor) Foster and great niece Riley of Edmond, Okla.

She was preceded in death by her father, August of 2000 and mother, January of 2001.

Friends may call from noon to 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 1 at Lunning Chapel with the family to receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m.

Visitation will be held from 9 to 9:45 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 2 at the Burlington Apostolic Christian Church with the funeral service to begin at 10 a.m.

Memorials are suggested to the Southeast Iowa Regional Home Health and Hospice in memory of Doris Cordill.

Janet Mattson, 74, of Burlington, died Friday, Oct. 25, 2024, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in West Burlington. Born Nov. 17, 1949, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Leland Richard and Kathryn Lois Calhoun Rogers. On Jan. 10, 1970, she married Kenny Alan Mattson in Burlington.&nbsp; She received her AAS degree in Microcomputer Application Specialist from Southeastern Community College in the spring of 1998.&nbsp; Janet was an instructor for many computer application classes at Southeastern Community College. She and her husband have owned and operated Blackhawk Kennels since 1999. She was a member of the Faith Lutheran Church in Burlington. She enjoyed traveling, especially to Texas to train dogs, civic music, players workshop, computer games, reading, genealogy, dogs, and cats. Survivors include her husband of 54 years, Kenny Alan Mattson of Burlington; two sons, Kenny A. (Kristie) Mattson of Burlington, Scott E. (Christa) Mattson of Burlington, and one grandson, Larry Burr. She was preceded in death by her parents. Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh Crematory. Sheldon R. “Cotton” Pence, 80, of Dallas City, Ill. died Monday, Oct. 28, 2024, at Blessing Hospital in Quincy, Ill.

Cotton was born March 13, 1944, in Lomax, Ill, the son of Earnest “Woody” and Helen Sherman Pence. Earlier in life, he married Sherrie Logan. They later divorced. On June 30, 1990, he married Kathie Hainline in Henderson County, Ill. She survives.&nbsp;

Mr. Pence attended Dallas City High School before enlisting in the U.S. Navy. Following his military service, he worked various jobs including at Cole Implement, Dave Morris Construction, Murray Iron Work and many others, before beginning a long career with Case in Burlington, Iowa. He was a member of the UAW #807 and the former Lomax Saddle Club. He enjoyed raising horses, hunting, fishing, camping, and telling tall tales. He had a great sense of humor.&nbsp;

Besides his wife, Kathie, survivors include four children: Michael (Kathy) Pence of Fort Madison, Rod (Beth) Pence of Dallas City, Ill., Danielle (Henry) Brill of Oquawka, Ill. and Bobby Brill of Burlington; seven grandchildren: Zachary, Emily, Leah, Lara, Noah, Hailie, and BJ; six great-grandchildren with one more on the way; one sister: Deb Worley of Lomax and five brothers: Larry Pence of Dallas City, Jimmy (Edna) Pence of Dallas City, Joe (LouAnn) Pence of Carthage, Wyverne (Nancy) Pence of Pleasant Plains and Randy (Carol) Pence of Niota.&nbsp;

Nancy Jane Simpson, 90, a longtime resident of Burlington, peacefully passed away in her home on Thursday, Feb. 29, 2024, surrounded by her loving family.

Born on Nov. 22, 1933, in Tulsa, Okla., Nancy was the cherished daughter of Ed and Elizabeth Mae Roglitz. On Nov. 1, 1978, she entered into marriage with Frederick Byrd Simpson in Reno, Nev.

Nancy was affectionately known as an "Okie" with a fiery spirit. She was renowned for her candid nature, always speaking her mind with honesty and integrity. Despite her occasional orneriness and unfiltered opinions, she possessed a heart of gold and exhibited boundless generosity, touching the lives of many through her random acts of kindness.&nbsp;

Nancy found great joy in gathering with loved ones for spirited card and board games, her favorites including spite &amp; malice, hand &amp; foot, cribbage, backgammon, and zilch. She cherished moments spent poring over family photographs and relished in the company of her children and grandchildren.

Music was her constant companion, a symphony that colored her days with joy. Country songs, in particular, held a special place in her heart, and she could often be found lost in the rhythm as her favorite tunes echoed through the house. For Nancy, these simple pleasures were the essence of happiness.

Nancy leaves behind a legacy of love and devotion. She is survived by her devoted husband of 45 years, Fred Simpson; her daughter, Michelle Sandoval and husband, Rick; four sons, Vernon Baker and wife Daleyn, Stephen Baker, Phillip Baker and wife Candy, Keevin Simpson and wife Jaena; son-in-law, Mike Narez; as well as 13 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild. She now joins her departed daughter, ReDanna Jean Narez, who eagerly awaited her in the afterlife.

Family and friends are invited to pay their respects during visitation hours from 9:00 to 11 a.m. on Friday, March 15, 2024, at Prugh Funeral Service located at 3940 Division Street.

Jana Kay Finley, 54, of LaHarpe, Ill., died Monday, Oct. 28, 2024 at her home.

Jana was born May 4, 1970 in Macomb, Ill., the daughter of John W. and Betty Lee Kurtz Shallenberger. On Feb. 20, 1998, she married Brad R. Finley. They later divorced.&nbsp;

Jana was a 1988 graduate of LaHarpe High School. Following high school, she worked as a Medical Assistant for a short time, before staying home to raise her daughters. Once her daughters grew older, she worked at the LaHarpe-Davier Nursing Home, Country Café and R &amp; M Market &amp; Floral, all in LaHarpe. Jana volunteered for the LaHarpe Fire Department and served as an EMT for the LaHarpe Ambulance Service for many years. She also assisted with Girl Scouts when her daughters were young.

Jana enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren, kayaking, and being outdoors.

On Feb. 20, 1998, she married Brad R. Finley. They later divorced.&nbsp;Jana was a 1988 graduate of LaHarpe High School. Following high school, she worked as a Medical Assistant for a short time, before staying home to raise her daughters. Once her daughters grew older, she worked at the LaHarpe-Davier Nursing Home, Country Café and R &amp; M Market &amp; Floral, all in LaHarpe. Jana volunteered for the LaHarpe Fire Department and served as an EMT for the LaHarpe Ambulance Service for many years. Jana Kay Finley

Erma M. Baker, 94, of Burlington, died Sunday, Oct.27, 2024, at Oakview Nursing and Rehab in Burlington.

Born on Dec. 22, 1929, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Harry and Stella Ruschill Lucas. On June 19, 1948, in Burlington, she married Howard Baker Jr. He preceded her in death on May 1, 2008.

Erma graduated in the class of 1947 from Sperry High. She was a member of St. John’s of Flint River Township and former member of the VFW Auxiliary #10102. Erma enjoyed knitting, crocheting, playing cards, planting flowers, watching birds, singing, playing the piano and accordion and going to the mall and walking with her friends. She was an avid Chicago Cubs fan. Erma loved having her daughters over and baking Christmas cookies every year. Every Wednesday evening, she enjoyed getting her weekly phone call from her grandson Mark. Most of all Erma loved being with her family.

She is survived by her three daughters: Barb (Warren) Loper, Lynne (Rick) Evans both of Sperry, and Karen Baker of Burlington; seven grandchildren: Kathy (Franklin) Espanto of San Antonio, Texas, Beth (Mike) Moehler of Mediapolis, Mark (Becka) Loper of Richland, Iowa, Justin Loper and Melissa Loper both of Sperry, Chad (Jill) Evans and Kyle (Sandy) Evans both of Mediapolis; sister Shirley (Lester) Granaman of Sperry, and sister in-law Jeannie Lucas of Burlington.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Howard, five brothers, two sisters and one great grandson Ben.

Per her wishes cremation has been entrusted and accorded with Lunning Chapel.

The memorial service for Erma will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 31, 2024, at Lunning Chapel. A visitation will be held one hour before the service where the family will meet with friends. Burial will be held in St. John’s of Flint River Township Cemetery.

Mr. James A. Brown, 80, of Fort Madison, passed away at 2:24 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 24, 2024, at his home. He was born June 9, 1944, in Downey, Calif., the son of Victor and Beverly Miller Brown. On Jan. 2, 1993, he married Vera Crupper in Washington, Iowa. Mr. Brown was a graduate of Burlington High School and Southeastern Community College.&nbsp; He was an Army Veteran of the Vietnam War. He retired from Champion Spark Plug in Burlington and was a member of the UAW Local 1237, where he held many appointed and elected offices. James loved to golf at Sheaffer Memorial Golf Course and spent the winters with his wife in Alabama. He is survived by his wife, Vera, three sons, Alan of Little Rock, Arkansas, Rick of Mims, Florida, and Sean of Orange City, Iowa, seven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and two sisters, Teresa and Lora. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, and one great-grandson.

She was a 1952 graduate of Burlington High School and attended Harmony Bible Church.&nbsp;&nbsp;Darlene worked for Mason &amp; Hanger-Silas Mason; as a secretary at Danville Community Schools; and later volunteered at Great River Medical Center.&nbsp;&nbsp;She loved to cook and bake, enjoyed sewing, reading, spending time with family, and traveling.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Survivors include her sons, Steve (Trina) Spencer of Danville and Mark (Lana) Spencer of Burlington; eight grandchildren, Kirstie, Erik, Taylor, Travis, Maria, Nathan, Ethan, and Tobey; seven great-grandchildren; her sister Sandra Kay Avritt of Las Vegas; one niece and one nephew.&nbsp;&nbsp;She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son Tom Spencer; and sister Molly Lou Dockendorff.

Sandra Lee&nbsp; Nolte, 87, of Burlington, died Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2024, at Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in West Burlington.

Sandra, known as “Sandy” to her family and friends, was born July 6, 1937, in Burlington, the daughter of John Frederick Rolf and Emily Christine Peterson Rolf. She married Robert Frederick Nolte, Jr. on Sept. 2, 1961.

Sandy was a 1955 graduate of Burlington High School. She worked as a secretary over a span of 29 years in the following businesses: Riley Brothers, Inc.; CB&amp;Q West Burlington Shops; Des Moines County Farm Bureau; International Resistance Co.; James Madison Middle School; and Burlington Community High School. She met and dealt with many people over the years, and totally loved her work.

Sandy was baptized, confirmed and married at St. Luke United Church of Christ, where she and husband Bob were actively involved in its programs. She was a member of Sarah Circle and the Women’s Fellowship, and served as church secretary. She wrote and directed programs for family nights, banquets, birthday luncheons and special events. She directed the Youth Choir during the 1970s. She joined the Adult Choir at age 15 and sang with the group for 60 years, serving as director for the last 23 – a great joy of her life. Known for her beautiful soprano voice, she often was asked to sing for weddings and funerals at numerous churches throughout the Burlington area.

Sandy and older sister Jackie both began singing at the age of five, often performing duets together throughout their school years and beyond. Sandy had her first solo in first grade, in the Christmas program for P.T.A. at Grimes Grade School. She sang “Silent Night” that day and kept singing throughout her lifetime. Sandy took piano and voice lessons, and also had artistic talent and loved to draw. She designed several music program covers for Horace Mann Junior High concerts. She later appeared in one play and four musicals at the Player’s Workshop, singing the lead in “The Fantasticks” at age 25.

One of Sandy’s greatest joys was joining Bel Canto Chorale. She and her sister were original members, singing with the group for ten years. Husband Bob and brother-in-law Ray joined the group as well, and Sandy and Bob performed a duet in one of Bel Canto’s programs. She also designed program covers for the group’s concerts, and even hand-painted several huge tri-fold scenery backdrops for the group’s “After 8” performance.

Sandy Rolf Nolte loved her family dearly! She cherished friendships made over the years met regularly with “Red Hat” and “Lunch Bunch” groups. She loved all social events where she could visit and catch up on friends’ news. Sandy had a smile for everyone, and as she would tell you, “Always look for the joy in every day.”

Survivors include one daughter, Leann Nolte of Fairfield, Iowa; three nieces and one nephew: Jean Taylor Bailey of Parker, CO; Stacey Taylor of Amarillo, TX; Cheryl Dreiling Stewart of McKinney, TX; Chris Dreiling of Carrolton, TX; and several great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, sister, brother-in-law Ray Taylor, sister-in-law Jane Dreiling, and nephew Steve Taylor.

The funeral service for Sandy will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 28, 2024, at St. Luke United Church of Christ with Rev. Randy Webster officiating. A one-hour visitation will be held prior to the service where the family will be meeting with friends. Burial will be held in Aspen Grove Cemetery.

Ronda Kay Berlett, 65, of LaHarpe, Ill., died Monday, Oct. 21, 2024 at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria, Ill.

Ronda was born March 7, 1959 in Lincoln, Ill, the daughter of Robert and Naomi Johnson Veff. On Dec. 17, 1977, she married Duane Berlett in LaHarpe. They later divorced.&nbsp;

Ronda was a 1977 graduate of LaHarpe High School. She attended Robert Morris College in Carthage, Ill., where she received her medical assistant degree. She worked as a medical assistant at Memorial Hospital in Carthage and MDH in Macomb. She also worked for the Hancock County Assessors Office.&nbsp;

She enjoyed sewing and spending time with her grandchildren; especially following their sports and car races. She was a member of the LaHarpe Christian Church.&nbsp;

Survivors include her mother: Naomi; two sons: Seth (April) Berlett of LaHarpe and Brent (Christine) Berlett of Fort Madison, two grandchildren: Alexa and Stefan and two sisters: Melanie (Rick) Quigle of LaHarpe and Jeannie Humphrey of Fort Madison.&nbsp;

She was preceded in death by her father and a special grandmother: Viola Yeazle.&nbsp;

Ronda Berlett

Reta Darlene Zane,&nbsp;94, of Bonaparte, passed away at 4:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 21, 2024, at Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in West Burlington.&nbsp;

She was born on Nov. 5, 1929, in Farmington, the daughter of Russell and Goldie Krouse Pitney. On April 1, 1949, she married Robert Zane in Farmington. He preceded her in death on Jan. 12, 1986.

Reta attended school at Farmington, graduating in 1947. She then worked a year and one half at the Farmington Bank as a secretary to Hank Hanas. She was a lifelong resident of Van Buren County. She was a member of the former Bonaparte United Methodist Church, serving many years in the music department. She particularly enjoyed music, sewing, and mowing her yard. Reta was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

Survivors include her daughter: Bobbie (Doug) DeHart of Keosauqua; two sons: James (wife, Diane Martin) Zane of Donnellson, John (wife, Juliana) Zane of rural Bonaparte; grandchildren: Julie (Ron) Lundin, Nathan (Angie) Blair, Kylee (John) Siegel, Annie (Justin) Lampe, Andrew (Murphy) Zane; grandson-in-law: Rick Witt and twelve great-grandchildren. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews including Joyce Blint.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband: Robert; only sister: Helen (Harold) Lowenberg; brother-in-law: Lee (Kay) Zane; daughter-in-law: Jane Zane and granddaughter: Erin Witt.

Her body has been entrusted to the crematory of Schmitz Funeral Homes for cremation.

Per her wishes, a private family memorial service will be held at a later date.

Burial will be at Greenglade Cemetery in Farmington.

 </figure>Reta Darlene Zane,&nbsp;94, of Bonaparte, passed away at 4:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 21, 2024, at Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in West Burlington.&nbsp;She was born on Nov. 5, 1929, in Farmington, the daughter of Russell and Goldie Krouse Pitney. On April 1, 1949, she married Robert Zane in Farmington. He preceded her in death on Jan. 12, 1986.Reta attended school at Farmington, graduating in 1947. She then worked a year and one half at the Farmington Bank as a secretary to Hank Hanas. She was a lifelong resident of Van Buren County. She was a member of the former Bonaparte United Methodist Church, serving many years in the music department. She particularly enjoyed music, sewing, and mowing her yard. Reta was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.Survivors include her daughter: Bobbie (Doug) DeHart of Keosauqua; two sons: James (wife, Diane Martin) Zane of Donnellson, John (wife, Juliana) Zane of rural Bonaparte; grandchildren: Julie (Ron) Lundin, Nathan (Angie) Blair, Kylee (John) Siegel, Annie (Justin) Lampe, Andrew (Murphy) Zane; grandson-in-law: Rick Witt and twelve great-grandchildren. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews including Joyce Blint.She was preceded in death by her parents; husband: Robert; only sister: Helen (Harold) Lowenberg; brother-in-law: Lee (Kay) Zane; daughter-in-law: Jane Zane and granddaughter: Erin Witt.Her body has been entrusted to the crematory of Schmitz Funeral Homes for cremation.Per her wishes, a private family memorial service will be held at a later date.Burial will be at Greenglade Cemetery in Farmington.A memorial has been established in her memory for Bonaparte United Church and can be mailed to the family at: Schmitz Funeral Home, P.O. She was a member of First Christian (Church Disciples of Christ). She was also a &nbsp;past member of UAW Local 1829, a member of Phi Theta Kappa, and a lifetime Alumnus of Southeastern Community College. Cheryl enjoyed fishing, going to church and she dearly loved spending time with her family. Survivors include her son, Todd Lynn (Colleen) Brobston of Cedar Rapids; five grandchildren, Ryan Brobston, Anthony Brobston, Amber Brobston, Johnny &nbsp;Tucker, Christine Hogg; 10 great-grandchildren, Kinsley, Gydion, Pandora, Aizen, Odin, Elea, Sophy, Athena, Jaya, and Chryssy. Cheryl Brobston

Charles D. “Charlie” Newman, 62, of Dallas City, Ill., died Friday, Oct. 18, 2024, at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria, Ill.

Charlie was born April 3, 1962, in Fort Madison, the son of Joseph R. and Donna D. Wilcox Newman. On June 26, 2008, he married Deb Porter in Fort Madison. She survives.&nbsp;

Mr. Newman was a 1980 graduate of Dallas City High School. Shortly after high school, he began a 33 year career with Iowa State Penitentiary in Fort Madison. He also worked within the family business, Porter Cleaning.&nbsp;

Charlie was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting, especially turkey hunting. He had a love for animals and took pride in caring for his chickens, ducks, cats and dogs. He also enjoyed watching his favorite movie: Secretariat. He was a member of the NWTF and the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Dallas City. He was a fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers.&nbsp;

Besides his wife, survivors include four children: Rachael Newman, Amber (Jason) Moats, Angie (Nathan) Dunham, Anthony (Brittany) Siefken; one daughter-in-law: Dawn Quick; many grandchildren; three brothers: Carl (Sharon) Newman, and Ronald Newman and Kris Newman and his bonus parents: David and Patricia Johnson and Sharon Porter.&nbsp;

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son: Joey Quick; one daughter: Heather Newman and one great-grandson: Atlas.&nbsp;

Friends may call after 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 25, 2024 at Banks &amp; Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City, where the family will receive friends from 5 7 p.m. A rosary will be recited at 6:30 p.m.&nbsp;

A Mass Of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 26, 2024, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Dallas City with Fr. Tony Trosley as Celebrant.&nbsp;

Tom was born in Muscatine, on Dec. 19, 1957, to his parents Marian Gay Cunningham and Mearl Almond Laucamp. He worked in the carpenter trade most of his life.&nbsp;

Tom is survived by his wife of 26 years, Debra Kay Laucamp of Eldora; son, Corey (Beki) Laucamp of Geneva; daughter, Lisa Swafford of Ottumwa; step-children, Jennifer (Chris) Johns of Evansdale; Tammy Tournier (Jay Bruno) of Eldora; Daniel Tournier Jr. of Waterloo; Sisters:&nbsp; Chris (David) Oleson of West Burlington and Mari (Pat) Garrett of Mediapolis; five grandchildren, six step-grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, cousins, uncles, and his good friend/boss, Chris Shepherd.

Per his wishes, cremation has been accorded. A celebration of life will occur on Friday, Oct. 25 with his family.

Ronald Charles "Bean" Beening Jr., 74, of Burlington, died Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2024, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in West Burlington. Born Aug. 7, 1950, in Chicago, Ill., he was the son of Ronald Charles and Enez Pernila Anderson Beening. &nbsp;

He was a Journeyman Plumber and Pipe Fitter and worked at the Ordinance Plant for 10 years.

Ronald came to Burlington over 40 years ago, on a plumbing job out of Chicago. He loved the area and decided to make his home here in Burlington where he made many good friends. Over the years, he loved his dogs as his family. He enjoyed music and played the violin.

Survivors include his sister, Lynn Steiner of Bellwood, Ill. and three nephews, Glen (Monica) Steiner, David (Genie) Steiner, and John (Donna) Steiner. Also, six great nieces and nephews: Kelsey (Michael) Walz, Collin (Amy), Kirsten, Kyle, Shelby and Jackson Steiner, and one great-grand nephew, Ezra.

Jill loved spending time with her grandchildren and she will be fondly remembered for always saying: "I love you to the moon and back". Jill Ann Hittle

Richard “Oscar” Cline, 68, of Burlington, died Thursday, Oct. 17, 2024, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.

Born Aug. 1, 1956, in Burlington, he was the son of Oscar Richard and Patsy Lou Neufner Cline. He married Tara Hamilton, they later divorced.

Oscar worked for Univar for over 30 years.

He was very much about his family, and his grandson was his world! He enjoyed fishing, playing pool, shooting darts, tubing down the Skunk River, walking trails, camping and traveling. He was a Kansas City Chiefs fan and adored his dog Herbie.

He is survived by his two daughters; Amber Blynn Cline of Ottumwa and Mackenzie Marie Cline of Burlington; grandson Iverson Oscar Lee Applegate; sister Pam (Tom) Newberry of Burlington; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his fiancé’ Tracy Koett.

Visitation will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 24 at Lunning Chapel where the family will receive friends. The funeral service for Oscar will be 3 p.m. Thursday, October 24 at Lunning Chapel. Burial will be held in Aspen Grove Cemetery.

Richard “Oscar” Cline

Dennis Roy Miller, 69, of Burlington, died Sunday, Oct. 20, 2024, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in West Burlington.

Born June 20, 1955, in Burlington, he was the son of James Leroy and Marilyn Gieselman Miller.

He graduated from Mediapolis High School.&nbsp;

Dennis enjoyed morel hunting, sky diving and loved to spend his winters in Mexico. These last few years he had become an Iowa Women's Basketball fan because of Caitlin Clark. Dennis was also well known for socializing with his friends, he would go to town every night for at least a few hours.

Survivors include his father, James Leroy Miller; brother, Bob (Traci) Miller of Winfield; sister, Penny (Rick) Dopler of Burlington; three nieces; one nephew; many great nieces and nephews and many friends.

Family will receive friends from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 26, 2024, at Prugh Funeral Service, 3940 Division Street.

The funeral service for Mr. Miller will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 26, 2024, at Prugh Funeral Service, with Pastor Wally Reynolds officiating. Private family burial will be held in Old Stone Cemetery.

Dennis Roy Miller

Vivian Sylvia Gunsolley, 99, died early morning on Oct. 21, 2024, at Klein Center in West Burlington. Born on March 30, 1925, in Williams, Ariz., she was the daughter of Gerald A. and Blanche I. Stewart Gelatt. A year later the family moved to Fort Madison, and later to Burlington, where Vivian attended Jr. and Sr. High School. After graduating she attended Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in 1946 and then the United States Cadet Nurse Corps. During this time Vivian met and fell in love with the young man across the road on Cliff Road Burlington, Arnold H. Wiemann, Jr. and they were married Dec. 28, 1947, he preceded her in death on Aug. 17, 1990. Together they had three children, Gerald, Suzan, and Donald.

Vivian was a member of the Community of Christ Church where, over the years, she served as Women’s Leader, Skylark Leader for young girls and served as a Priest in the Priesthood. She worked for Mercy Hospital where she retired from after many years. She also worked for a short period of time at Elmview Nursing Home and the Des Moines County Home. Vivian and Arnold made two health trips to Honduras and had a young man from Honduras stay in their home for nine months. She enjoyed spending time at the Sew N Sew Shop and Cheryl’s School of Dance. Vivian was exceptional at sewing and quilting. She loved spending the winter months in southern Texas with friends.

On Sept. 24, 1999, Vivian married Norman Gunsolley and moved to California. He preceded her in death on Nov. 23, 2013. She had three stepchildren, Linda (Bob) Wilson, Steve Gunsolley, and Jamae Gunsolley.

In 2018 Vivian moved back to Burlington to live with her daughter Suzan and they later moved to Johnston. In June 2023 Vivian was ready to move home so she moved into Klein Center.

She is survived by her son Gerald “Jerry” (Marge) Wiemann of Burlington and daughter Suzan Strandberg of Johnston, Iowa; all six of her grandchildren that were very special to her; eighteen great grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren and four more great-great grandchildren on the way and daughter in-law Claudia Moore. Also surviving are several wonderful nieces and nephews and two special friends from Klein Center: Mike Crawford and Linda Hand.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands: Arnold Wiemann and Norman Gunsolley; son Donald Wiemann; brother Marvin Gelatt and son in-law Greg Strandberg.

Per Vivian’s wishes cremation has been entrusted and accorded with Lunning Chapel.

 </figure>Vivian Sylvia Gunsolley, 99, died early morning on Oct. 21, 2024, at Klein Center in West Burlington. Born on March 30, 1925, in Williams, Ariz., she was the daughter of Gerald A. and Blanche I. Stewart Gelatt. A year later the family moved to Fort Madison, and later to Burlington, where Vivian attended Jr. and Sr. High School. After graduating she attended Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in 1946 and then the United States Cadet Nurse Corps. During this time Vivian met and fell in love with the young man across the road on Cliff Road Burlington, Arnold H. Wiemann, Jr. and they were married Dec. 28, 1947, he preceded her in death on Aug. 17, 1990. Together they had three children, Gerald, Suzan, and Donald.Vivian was a member of the Community of Christ Church where, over the years, she served as Women’s Leader, Skylark Leader for young girls and served as a Priest in the Priesthood. She worked for Mercy Hospital where she retired from after many years. She also worked for a short period of time at Elmview Nursing Home and the Des Moines County Home. Vivian and Arnold made two health trips to Honduras and had a young man from Honduras stay in their home for nine months. She enjoyed spending time at the Sew N Sew Shop and Cheryl’s School of Dance. Vivian was exceptional at sewing and quilting. She loved spending the winter months in southern Texas with friends.On Sept. 24, 1999, Vivian married Norman Gunsolley and moved to California. He preceded her in death on Nov. 23, 2013. She had three stepchildren, Linda (Bob) Wilson, Steve Gunsolley, and Jamae Gunsolley.In 2018 Vivian moved back to Burlington to live with her daughter Suzan and they later moved to Johnston. In June 2023 Vivian was ready to move home so she moved into Klein Center.She is survived by her son Gerald “Jerry” (Marge) Wiemann of Burlington and daughter Suzan Strandberg of Johnston, Iowa; all six of her grandchildren that were very special to her; eighteen great grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren and four more great-great grandchildren on the way and daughter in-law Claudia Moore. Also surviving are several wonderful nieces and nephews and two special friends from Klein Center: Mike Crawford and Linda Hand.She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands: Arnold Wiemann and Norman Gunsolley; son Donald Wiemann; brother Marvin Gelatt and son in-law Greg Strandberg.Per Vivian’s wishes cremation has been entrusted and accorded with Lunning Chapel.The memorial service for Vivian will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 25, 2024, at Lunning Chapel with her children sharing. LeRoy R. Payne, 85, of Burlington, died Friday, Oct. 18, 2024, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in West Burlington.

Born Nov. 4, 1938, in Wyman, at home, he was the son of Robert F. and Evelyn L. Payne. He married Dorothy Dagenhart on Nov. 22, 1994, in Dallas City, Ill. She preceded him in death on Sept. 20, 2019.

LeRoy worked for BNSF for 23 years. He retired in 2002. He was a member of Sunnyside Baptist Church.

He loved cars and was an excellent mechanic. He enjoyed sprint cars, going out to eat and loved his sweets! He was meticulous with his yard work and his home.

Survivors include his two sons; Farren LeRoy Payne and Jay Karl Payne (Kim Delap); step-daughter Robin Payne (Justin Morse); eight grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; two brothers, Butch Payne and Glen Richard Payne; four sisters, Patricia Hinkel, Kathy Luhn, Donna Pacha and Janet Welder; numerous nieces and nephews and his dog “Cowboy”.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Dorothy and son Darrell Payne.

The funeral service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 22 at Lunning Chapel. Pastor Larry Dodds will officiate. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the funeral service.

Memorials have been established for the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House or the Des Moines County Humane Society.

Brent Allen Harrison, 61, of Dallas City, Ill., died Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2024, at his home. Brent was born May 23, 1963, in Burlington, the son of Charles “Charlie” and Delores “Dee” Harrison.&nbsp;

After attending Dallas City High School, he worked as a deck hand on barges. He also worked for his father at Harrison Construction and with his sister and brother-in-law at Quality Fisheries in Niota.&nbsp; Brent’s favorite thing to do was to be out on the river. He loved fishing and would often share his catch with family and friends.&nbsp; When he wasn’t on the river, he enjoyed mushroom hunting and just being outdoors. He also enjoyed having his own garden and growing his own vegetables.&nbsp; Brent was a quiet and very kind man who always enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He was also an avid NASCAR and Indianapolis Colts fan.

Survivors include four sisters: Theresa (Kirby) Marsden of Fort Madison, Cheri (David) Stevens of Dallas City, Julie (David) Nudd of Dallas City and Stacie Harrison of Estero, Fla. and numerous nieces and nephews.&nbsp; He was preceded in death by his parents, one nephew (Ryan Marsden) and one great nephew (Duncan Stevens).&nbsp; A celebration of Brent’s life will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 26, 2024 at Banks &amp; Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City. Burial will follow in Pontoosuc Cemetery.&nbsp;

John Thomas Rice, 82, of Burlington, died Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2024, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in West Burlington.

 </figure>John Thomas Rice, 82, of Burlington, died Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2024, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in West Burlington.Born Aug. 14, 1942, in Burlington, he was the son of Verne and Elsie Belle Miller Rice. &nbsp;John grew up in Oak Park, Ill. where he graduated high school. In 1960 he came to Iowa for college and remained for 62 years. &nbsp;He graduated from Parsons College in 1965 and earned his Master's Degree from Western Illinois University in 1975. John loved growing up in the Chicago area but said many times how glad he was to become an Iowa Boy.&nbsp;John's first teaching job was at Washington School followed by 32 years at Oak Street Middle School. On July 10, 1971 John married Linda Lee Wittkamp, who was teacher at Blackhawk Elementary School and from their union they were blessed with three children.He was of the Christian Faith. John enjoyed his boat trips in Minnesota at his summer cabin, going out to his Fairfield farm and traveling to different states and Canadian provinces. He also had many hobbies including collecting, stamps, coins, badges, patches and was a cars enthusiast. He also enjoyed listening to the police scanner.&nbsp;Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Linda Rice of Burlington; three children, Greg (Juliea)&nbsp; Rice of Aledo, Ill., Brandon (Eden) Rice of Burlington, and Melissa (Cameron) Capps of Burlington; 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.He was preceded in death by his parents.Visitation will be from 10 to&nbsp; 11 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 18, 2024, at Prugh Funeral Service, 3940 Division Street.The funeral service for Mr. Rice will be 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 18, 2024, at Prugh Funeral Service, 3940 Division Street. &nbsp;Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. &nbsp;
