Anita Kathryn Janik, 75, of Burlington, died Thursday, Nov.&nbsp; 14, 2024, at the University of Iowa Hospitals &amp; Clinics in Iowa City.

Anita was born May 28, 1949, in Anniston, Ala., the daughter of Joseph &nbsp;and Nell Johnson Janik.

She was a 1967 graduate of Burlington High School.&nbsp;

Anita worked for US West for 30 years where she retired in 1998, and later worked at Dillons BBQ for 20 years.

Anita enjoyed the simple things in life. &nbsp;She liked the peace of a nice cup of coffee; watching "Friends" or various British T.V. shows; and adored the album "Yanni - Live at the Acropolis" and The Three Tenors. &nbsp;She had a big heart and appreciated taking care of the people she loved. &nbsp;Her life revolved around her family. &nbsp;Her son and new twin grand-babies were everything to her. &nbsp;Anita's kindness and warmth will be missed, but her memory and legacy will continue on through her family.

Family includes her son, Adam (Noor) Janik; siblings, Marty (Krista) Janik, and Shannon Eicher; grandchildren, Cru and Sam; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, niece, and one great-nephew.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh Crematory.

Anita's family will receive guests at Prugh Funeral Service (3940 Division St., Burlington) on Friday, Nov. 22, from 9 to 11 a.m. concluding with a celebration of life at 11 a.m.

Memorial contributions in Anita's memory are suggested to her family and will be used for her grandchildren's future education.

Hope Mary Hillyer, 66, of Middletown, died Sunday, Nov. 17, 2024, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in West Burlington. Hope was born Sept. 8, 1958, in Chicago, Ill., the daughter of William Frederick and Rose Oboikovitz Luzadder. &nbsp; Hope was a fighter. &nbsp;She loved her family fiercely and deeply and excelled at running her home. &nbsp;She had a deep and unwavering faith that guided her throughout her life. &nbsp;She enjoyed writing poetry and sharing her gift with others. &nbsp;She loved reading the Bible and keeping prayer in her heart and on her lips. &nbsp;She was very active at First Baptist Church in Danville; always a willing worker and enjoyed serving as a deaconess. &nbsp; Her kindness and generosity will be missed, but her spirit and legacy will be carried by all who love her.

Hope's family include her husband of 48 years, Kenneth Hillyer; children; Chrystal (Aaron) Jackson and Kenny Hillyer, Jr; grandchildren, Jimmy Hillyer, Jamie Hillyer, and Mary Hillyer; siblings, David B. (Linda) Luzadder, and Cindy William; and niece, Rose &nbsp;Weaver.

She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Rose; and siblings, Margaret Suggett, Frank Luzadder and William Luzadder.

Vernon&nbsp; Paul “Vern” Morrow, 80, died Nov. 11, 2024, surrounded by his family.

He was born to Kathryn and Fredrick Morrow on February 12,1944. He was the youngest of four children. He graduated from Keokuk High School in 1963. He had an interest in cars and took a mechanic class at Southeastern Community College. His love for cars led him to jobs as a truck mechanic for various companies. In his spare time, he loved to work on his own cars.

Vernon met Nancy Lebeck Hunter at a singles group in Burlington and they united in marriage on Oct. 19, 1991. They blended their two families together in their union.

Vernon loved to look for frugal finds at auctions. He also loved reading western novels. He will be remembered by his family for his booming laughter, his big bear hugs, and his amazing pancakes. Most of all Vernon loved to see his grandchildren and they were his true pride and joy.

Vernon is survived by his wife, Nancy Morrow, two sons, Eric (Casey) and Rex (Janice) Morrow; three stepchildren John Hunter, Diana Orwick (Brian), and Sarah Camp (Jared); and his grandchildren: Elizabeth, Haley, Brady, Casey, Reagan, Heather, Adelle, and Luke; and two great grandchildren: Rosalyn and Lucian.

He is preceded in death by his parents, his brother Jim, and two sisters Kay and Carolee.

There will be a private family graveside service. In lieu of flowers, make a donation to the charity of your choice.

Chelsea Nicole Griswold, age 27 of Louisa, Ken., died on Oct. 31, 2024, at her residence. She was born on March 4, 1997, in Galesburg, Ill.&nbsp;

She is survived by her mothers, Jackie Rene Griswold and Sammie Salisbury, her fur baby Bryson, a special grandma, Missy Thompson, her adopted mom, Robin, two special friends, Timmy Bailey and Kamryn, two special cousins, Nevaeh and Harmony, her many uncles, aunts, and cousins that she was very close to, and a host of other family and friends. 

Chelsea was preceded in death by her grandfather, Jack Lee Krow, a very special Nan who she loved and missed dearly, Rose Griswold, her grandma that she was very close to, Rosemary Griswold, her great grandparents, and two great uncles.

A memorial service will be held on Nov. 16, 2024, at 2 p.m. at the Louisa Fellowship Church in Louisa, Ken. with a balloon release. Sandra Sue Shipman, 86, of Dallas City, Ill., died Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2024, at Maple Grove Memory Care in Carthage, Ill.

Sandra was born Jan. 5, 1938, the daughter of Roy L. and Avery L. Akers Allen.&nbsp; She grew up on her parents’ farm near St. Mary, north of Plymouth, Ill, and became the family matriarch upon the sudden loss of her mother in 1951.&nbsp; Sandra went on to graduate in 1955 from Plymouth High School as the class Salutatorian.

On July 1, 1956, she married the love of her life, Ronald K. Shipman, which launched a 60-year true-love story that never waned – but was put on a brief pause after Ron’s death on Oct. 12, 2016.

Following high school, Sandra worked a number of jobs, including at Yetter Manufacturing and the Hancock County Farm Bureau.&nbsp; She attended beauty school in Burlington, which led to a highly successful career in the beauty field spanning over 40 years.&nbsp; Sandra’s Petite Flair beauty salon was a mainstay of Dallas City small business for over 20 years.&nbsp; Eventually, she transitioned to a follow-on career as a Mary Kay Consultant, continuing her passion for promoting women-owned businesses and the field of beauty.

She and Ron lived many places throughout their life, including Carthage, Burlington, New London, Colchester, Beaverdale, Lomax, Dallas City and even spent several years living in Pine Bluff, Ark. They amassed many friends and made a positive impact on peoples’ lives everywhere they went.&nbsp; Sandra always saw the best in people, especially children; to Sandra, every child was the greatest blessing a person could have. Her infectious enthusiasm and genuine concern for friends and family were inspirational and uplifting to everyone who met her.

Sandra enjoyed serving the community, whether it be through prayer, cooking meals, serving as an Election Official, teaching Vacation Bible School, or helping with Red Cross Blood Drives. She was a woman of strong, unwavering Christian faith; Ron and Sandra were members of – and were married in - the First Baptist Church in Carthage, and later became members of the First Christian Church in Dallas City.

Survivors include three sons: Audie Shipman of Dallas City, Doren Shipman of Dallas City, Brian Shipman of Hamilton, Ill. and one daughter, Karma Shipman of Houston, Texas, four grandchildren: Landon, Brenton (Jessica), Mason and Paige; three great-grandchildren: Joseph, William and Isabella; one brother: Larry Allen of Carthage and four sisters: Linda (Dale) Schamberger of Carthage, Janice Crum of Carthage, Chris (Ron) Totten of Salisbury, North Carolina and Cheryl (Wes) Shoemyer of Shelbina, Mo.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; her step-mother: Carol Allen and three brothers: Sidney, Earl and Daniel Allen.&nbsp;

Banks &amp; Beals Funeral Home of Dallas City is assisting the family.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 21, 2024, at the First Baptist Church in Carthage.

The funeral service for Mrs. Shipman will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 22, 2024, at the First Baptist Church, followed by burial at the Oak Grove Cemetery, rural Carthage.

Sandra Sue Shipman

Pauline A. Ritter,&nbsp;90, of Burlington, and formerly of Fort Madison, passed away at 12:47 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 17, 2024, at Addington Place in Burlington.&nbsp; &nbsp;

She was born on July 16, 1934, in Troy, Ill. to Merlin and Viola Buettikoffer Anderson.&nbsp;&nbsp;On June 10, 1952, she married Ralph George Ritter in St. Jacob, Ill. and he preceded her in death on Oct. 30, 2016.&nbsp;&nbsp;Pauline, along with her husband Ralph owned and operated Ritter’s Garden Center in Ft. Madison for twenty-one years and later in West Burlington.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Pauline was a former member of St. John United Church of Christ in Fort Madison and currently the First Christian Church in Burlington.&nbsp;&nbsp;Pauline and Ralph loved to travel and did so extensively throughout Europe; they had been to most of the countries there, including England, Scotland, Ireland, France, Switzerland, Italy, Austria, Germany, Hungary, Czech Republic, Estonia, Denmark, and Russia. They traveled to Austria, New Zealand, the Fiji Islands, and around South America through the Straits of Magellan and around Cape Horn.&nbsp;&nbsp;She was also very proud that she was able to visit all 50 states, including her last one, Utah, at the age of eighty-five.&nbsp; Pauline enjoyed playing bridge, and she always loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Survivors include one daughter, Patricia (Cliff) Boyke of Lakemoor, Ill.; one son, Stephen (Lynn) Ritter of Burlington; six grandchildren, Nicholas (Ashley) Richardson, Christopher (Jesse) Ritter, Nathan (Cindy) Richardson, Ryan (Jacque) Ritter, Kathlene (Greg) Richardson-DuBose &amp; Amanda (Chris) Ritter Brown; fourteen great-grandchildren; one brother, George Anderson of St. Jacob, Ill.; two sisters, Genevieve Armstrong of Alamogordo, N.M. and Mary Anderson of King George, Vir.; nieces and nephews.&nbsp;&nbsp;She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

The funeral service for Pauline will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2024, at 11 a.m. at the First Christian Church in Burlington with Rev. David Yonker officiating.&nbsp;&nbsp;The family will meet with friends from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at the church.&nbsp;&nbsp;Her burial will be held at Keokuk National Cemetery.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Pauline A. Ritter

Ralph Caston III, 79, formerly of Burlington, died from complications of a stroke on his 79th birthday, Nov.&nbsp; 14, 2024, at his home in Surprise, Ariz. He was surrounded by loved ones. Born on Nov. 14, 1945, he was the son of Ralph Jr. and Carol Caston of Caston’s Shoe Shop. 

In 1963, Ralph III graduated from Burlington High School and later enlisted in the U.S. Army. In South Korea, he was a supply manager for the Army’s 4th Infantry Division. After the military, Ralph worked in management for Pizza Hut. He married Marty (Martin) Caslyn in 1971. They later divorced. 

He attended Southeastern Community College and went on to earn a BA from Western Illinois University. Ralph joined the family business, Caston’s Shoe Shop, and took over when his parents retired. Ralph enjoyed conversations with customers, which often included his own brand of philosophy and humor. He was always available to young people who would come by the shoe shop looking for someone to talk to.

He encouraged them to step up in life and seek their own happiness. He told The Burlington Hawkeye’s Bob Saar: “I was put here for people to witness to. I have listened to a lot of people. I would explain to them where they could get information and how they could improve their situation.” Ashlin Schwartz, who appreciated his encouragement, helped in the shop and ran errands.

Many people, including family members, are grateful for Ralph’s compassionate listening. When his younger sister Merry dropped out of high school, Ralph convinced her to take the GED tests and attend community college. Because she was reluctant, Ralph drove her to her first class and took it with her. Merry went on to earn a master's of fine arts and became a college teacher, all because her brother cared.

When his father died in 1994, Ralph provided a stable foundation for his mother and special needs brother, Randy. After his mother chose to reside at the Burlington Care Center at the age of 89, Ralph drove there every day and delivered the bookkeeping for the shoe shop. Because of his devotion, she was able to stay active up until her death at 93.

Ralph was also devoted to his two daughters, Melynda Caston of Montana and V. Amanda Williams of Arizona. He enjoyed his grandchildren, Aurora, Juston, Kaylyn, and Ambrose; Jacob, Elizabeth, Aden, and Landon; and great-grandsons, Kaladin and Atticus, as well as his sons-in-law, Anthony Allen and Brandon Williams.

After his mother passed away, Ralph closed Caston’s Shoe Shop and moved to Arizona. He started a new life and enjoyed talking to customers at his daughter and granddaughter’s Anime store near Phoenix.

His brother Randy, who died before him, enjoyed Ralph’s quirky humor and steady presence. His older sister Betty Evetts of Texas will miss his phone calls. He will be remembered by his sister Merry and brother Richard as a generous person who would “give you the shirt off his back.” His daughters will always miss him.

A celebration of life will be announced later.

Barbara M. Fritz, 92, of Burlington, died Sunday, Nov. 10, 2024, at Oakview Care and Rehabilitation Center in Burlington.

Born June 26, 1932, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Carl and Hazel Schwerin.&nbsp; She married Rolland Fritz on June 18, 1950, he preceded her in death on Sept. 20, 2011.

She was a member of Unity Lutheran Church and was very active with her church.

Barbara worked as a bartended for Dugout Lounge and the Paddlewheel.&nbsp; In addition, she worked in the snack bar for many years for Bowl-In Lanes and more recently for American Greetings Cards with ShopKo.&nbsp; After Rolland’s death, she began volunteering for Oakview Care Center calling bingo, helping with “fancy hands day” and made many friends there. &nbsp;

She was a fun-loving lady and was an excellent cook, she loved the holidays and enjoyed decorating and hosting.&nbsp; She enjoyed keeping tabs on the neighborhood and spending time with her grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.

She is survived by her three children; Stephen (Arlys) Fritz, Jeffrey (Mac) Fritz and David (Pat) Fritz all of Burlington; four grandchildren, Jill (Kevin) Dunlop, Jeffrah (Jerimiah) Levins, Hillaurie (Travis) Bonar and Nathan (Nicole) Fritz; seven great grandchildren, Samuel Martin, Drake (Brooklyn Pardall) Fritz, Avery Levins, Ruthie Bonar, Rolland Bonar, Ava Fritz and Leopold Fritz and two great-great grandchildren, Oliver Martin and Finn Martin; one brother Donald Schwerin of Florida and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and two brothers, Carl Schwerin and Warren Schwerin.

The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov.&nbsp; 13 at Lunning Chapel.&nbsp; The family will receive friends for one hour before the service.&nbsp; Burial will be in Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery.

A memorial has been established for the Friends of Des Moines County 4-H.

Kristi Anne Zick, 42, of Burlington, died Nov. 12, 2024 at Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House, West Burlington, due to a Huntington’s-like Disease.

Born Sept. 30, 1982 in Arlington Heights, Ill., Kristi was the daughter of Wendy and Jerry Zick and sister of Julie Zick.&nbsp; Kristi started elementary school in Arlington Heights and finished in Keokuk.&nbsp; She then attended Oak Street Middle School and Burlington Community High School, graduating with the class of 2001.&nbsp; Kristi’s activities included dance and cheerleading.&nbsp; She especially enjoyed AP Calculus and Physics classes.

Kristi attended Iowa State University where she studied Materials Engineering.&nbsp; She worked as a server and bartender in Ames and West Des Moines.&nbsp; She returned to Burlington and worked as a receptionist at Deery Brothers until she became disabled.

Kristi enjoyed attending social events, decorating for holidays, baking sweet treats for family and friends, and working out with her fitness trainer, Stacey.&nbsp; She loved playing Sudoku – but only the “hard” puzzles and solitaire on the computer.&nbsp; She was an avid Chicago Bears fan.

As her disease progressed, Kristi moved in with her parents and brought much joy to their household.&nbsp; She especially enjoyed spending time with them in their Venice, Florida residence where she was welcomed as a part of the community.&nbsp; Kristi lived at Klein Center in West Burlington for the past few years where she was surrounded by wonderful, caring nurses, CNAs, and staff.

Kristi is survived by her parents, Wendy and Jerry Zick of Burlington, sister Julie Zick of Coralville, aunts, uncles, and cousins.&nbsp; She was preceded in death by two uncles and her grandparents.

Mary Anna Menke,&nbsp;83, of West Point, died at 1:05 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2024, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in West Burlington.

She was born on Aug. 6, 1941, in Mediapolis, the daughter of Vernon and Frances Davis Hedger. She was raised by her mother Frances and Arlo Humphrey. On May 21, 1966, she married Floyd S. “Gus” Menke at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Fort Madison, Iowa. He preceded her in death on March 11, 1993.

Survivors include her daughter: Paula (Rod) Roberts of Des Moines, Iowa; grandchildren: Renea (Jason) Fowler of Donnellson, Russell Roberts of Des Moines, Iowa; three great granddaughters; and sister-in-law: Kathy Hedger. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband: Floyd; son: Kevin; brother: Vernon Lee Hedger; in-laws: Charles and Melva DeWitt, Vincent and Marlene Wyatt, James and Karen Schmidt.

Mary was a 1959 graduate of Farmington High School. She worked for Sheaffer Pen Co. for many years. After retirement, she worked at the Corner Tap. Mary was a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in West Point and the Altar and Rosary Society of the church. She enjoyed playing cards, crocheting, traveling and watching the Iowa Hawkeyes.

A visitation will be held from 12 noon to 6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 15, 2024, at Schmitz Funeral Home in West Point, where the family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. that evening.

In Debra's younger years, she worked at The Arion Restaurant in Burlington, Iowa. After the birth of her son, Debra was a stay at home mom. Debra enjoyed playing BINGO, fishing at the family cabin, gardening, watching The Golden Girls, and listening to Old Time Country music. She also loved her pets, especially her recently departed dog, Scoobie. Michelle was a highly talented designer in the Minneapolis area, and was the CEO of MBloyd Design. She won many awards and had been recognized nationally for her work. Survivors include her father; two sisters, Terri Smith of O Fallon, Ill. and Lori Hogberg of Burlington; six nieces and nephews; six great-nieces and nephews. She was loved by many and will be greatly missed. She was preceded in death by her mother, Bev Mercer. Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh Crematory. Michelle Rae Bloyd

Sharon Kay Wasson Van Ness, 86, died Nov. 8, 2024, surrounded by her family, and with her beloved long-haired mini dachshund curled into her side.

Born July 31, 1938, Sharon Kay Wasson married Earl Dean Van Ness at The Little Brown Church in the Vale in Nashua in 1963. They welcomed their son Michael in 1965 and son David was born in 1968.

Sharon was an accomplished baker and cook, always on the hunt for a new recipe to try. Eventually, she turned her culinary skills into a business, baking and decorating cakes and cookies and making butter mints for hundreds of birthday parties, graduations, holidays, and events in Mediapolis and the surrounding communities over the years.

Sharon was an animal lover, especially fond of dogs, hummingbirds, and cats. She enjoyed doing word search puzzles, going to garage sales and flea markets, and reading western and cowboy romance novels. She had several specialty collections, including fancy handkerchiefs, antique hat pins, and ladies’ antique gloves.

Sharon was preceded in death by her parents, a beloved daughter-in-law, and two nieces. She is survived by her husband Dean Van Ness, her sons Michael (Dianne) Van Ness and David (Shawna) Van Ness, her brother Wayne (Irene) Wasson, her sister-in-law Annalou Vigil, four grandchildren: Cara (Clayton) Thacker, Blake Van Ness, Delaney (Jeremiah) Carter, and Ellerie Van Ness, four great-grandchildren: Kayden, Kendall, Bennett and Emersyn, as well as many nieces and nephews and, of course, her beloved dog, Cleopatra.

In accordance with Sharon's wishes, there will be no funeral or visitation, and her body will be cremated. Memorial gifts may be sent to Great River Hospice House.

They welcomed their son Michael in 1965 and son David was born in 1968.Sharon was an accomplished baker and cook, always on the hunt for a new recipe to try. Eventually, she turned her culinary skills into a business, baking and decorating cakes and cookies and making butter mints for hundreds of birthday parties, graduations, holidays, and events in Mediapolis and the surrounding communities over the years.Sharon was an animal lover, especially fond of dogs, hummingbirds, and cats. She enjoyed doing word search puzzles, going to garage sales and flea markets, and reading western and cowboy romance novels. She had several specialty collections, including fancy handkerchiefs, antique hat pins, and ladies’ antique gloves.Sharon was preceded in death by her parents, a beloved daughter-in-law, and two nieces. Sharon Kay Van Ness

After graduating from Burlington High School in 1969, Sherry began a fulfilling career at what was then Burlington Medical Center. She started as a switchboard operator before finding a home in the Accounts Payable Department. Sherry retired in 2015 after more than 35 years of dedicated service to the hospital.

Sherry is survived by her beloved family: her sons, Shawn Carper and Dustin Carper (Stephanie); her grandchildren, Jaron, Tyler, and Charlie; her brother, Gary Strandberg; and her sister, Beth Gilbert. She also shared a special bond with her aunt, Cora Ater, and her uncle, James Rechkemmer.

&nbsp;Sherry was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Greg Strandberg.

Known for her quiet, caring nature, Sherry found immense joy in her grandchildren, affectionately calling them her “boys.” She loved knitting and sewing gifts for family and friends, watching her favorite TV shows, and anything involving cats or teddy bears.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to the staff at Klein Center for the wonderful care they provided to Sherry.

The family will receive friends at Lunning Funeral Chapel on Friday, Nov. 15 from 4 to 6 p.m. A memorial service at Lunning will take place Saturday, Nov. 16 at 10:30 am.

Charlotte Loges,&nbsp;83, of Donnellson, died at 3:15 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2024, at Birkwood Village in Fort Madison.

She was born on Dec. 27, 1940, in Chicago, Ill., the daughter of Adolf and Melinda Bartsch Jahnke. On Nov. 3, 1990, she married Roger Loges in Crawford, Colo. He preceded her in death on Dec. 13, 2022.

She is survived by three children: Danette Onstott of Greenville, S. C., Todd (Sally) Onstott of Donnellson, and Craig (Anna) Onstott of Crawford, Colo.; grandchildren: Brandon (Chanae), Joshua (Bria), John Michael, Mason (Emilee), Shannon (Aaron), Taylor, Amber (Jason), Curtis and Kolsie; great-grandchildren: Phoebe, Macy, Kynlee, Ashley, William and Kaylee. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands; one brother and one sister.

Charlotte was a registered nurse and loved farming. She was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church.

A visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 9, 2024, at Schmitz Funeral Home in Donnellson, where the family will receive friends from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Cecelia J. Richards, 91, of Mount Pleasant, died Monday, Nov. 4, 2024, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in West Burlington.&nbsp;

Cecelia was born May 6, 1933, in Niota, Ill., the daughter of John and Florence Boeddeker Hogan. She graduated from St. Joseph’s High School in Fort Madison, and continued her education at Quincy College. Cecelia worked as an elementary school teacher. On Aug. 16, 1958, Cecelia was united in marriage to Dick Richards at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Fort Madison. The couple made their home in the Danville community for many years. Cecelia was a member of St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, and Altar and Rosary. She enjoyed sewing, quilting, and traveling.&nbsp;

Cecelia is survived by daughter Barbara (Randy) Brown of Mount Union; two sons David (Cathy Sanders) Richards of Montrose, Mark Richards of Danville; eight grandchildren, Mitch (Julie) Brown, Sarah Edwards, Kevin (Kelsey) Brown, David Richards, Mary Richards, Curtis (Mary) Richards, Trent (Melissa Flowers) Richards, Miranda Richards; eight great grandchildren; and sister Mary Scheetz of Nauvoo, Illinois.&nbsp;

Margaret E. Murders, 75 of West Burlington, died Friday, Nov. 1, 2024, at Mercy Hospital in Cedar Rapids.

Born on March 11, 1949, in Waterloo, she was the daughter of Gordon and Phyllis Haberstich Watters. On Feb. 24, 1969, in Tulsa, Okla. she married A.V. Murders. He preceded her in death on Dec. 25, 1996.

Margaret was a 1967 graduate of Denver High School and Southeastern Community College. For many years she worked at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant. Margaret was an air show enthusiast and loved to see the Blue Angels. She volunteered for several years at the Quad Cities Air Show. In her free time she enjoyed making crafts and auto racing, especially watching her son Nathan at local dirt tracks. Most of all she loved being with her dog Hope.

She is survived by her two sons: Chris (Ann) Murders of Ely, Iowa and Nathan (April) Murders of Burlington, Iowa; five grandchildren: Ashley, Ava, Brenden, Shelby (Jacob) and Elaina; one great grandchild Blythe and two sisters: Elisa (Stephen) Necklason and Becky (Thomas) Wagner. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband A.V.

The funeral service for Margaret will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 7, 2024, at Lunning Chapel with Pastor Simeon Counterman. Joyce Marie Sutter Pohl, 92, of Pleasant Hill, Iowa, passed away on Thursday, October 31, 2024, at Taylor House Unity Point Hospice in Des Moines, IA, after several months of illness and a recent fall in her home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM, Friday, November 8, 2024, with a visitation held from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM, at the Apostolic Christian Church of Taylor, MO. Ministers of the church will officiate. Burial will follow at the Apostolic Christian Church Cemetery in Taylor, MO.

Joyce was born on October 22, 1932, in West Quincy, MO at home, to Eli and Elizaeth Grimm Sutter. Joyce married Robert Pohl on August 15, 1954, at the Apostolic Christian Church in Taylor, MO.

Joyce is survived by her brother , Bob (Marilyn) Frieden, of Pahrump, Nevada; children Tina (Ben) Hoerr, of Peoria, IL; Becky (Ron) Behrens of Pleasant Hill, IA; Mathew (Dawn) of Broomfield, CO; daughter-in-law Dawn Pohl of Rainer, OR; grandchildren Emily Pool, Jenna Hoerr, Philip Hoerr, Casey Hoerr, Elly Zerillo, Claire Behrens, Zach Pohl, Krista Pohl, Ariel Pohl, Matty Dunlap, Caleb Pohl, Lindsay Hanzlick, and Josiah Pohl; 18 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Joyce was preceded in death by her husband, Robert (2010), her son, Michael Robert (2023) and four siblings, James Sutter, brother; Naomi Heimer, sister; Gerald Sutter, brother; and Dick Sutter, brother.

Joyce worked a variety of interesting jobs. She started her career at a shoe factory in Quincy, IL, and then at Baush and Lomb Optical Company. She and Bob started an interior design business when they moved to Burlington, IA, where she worked as the secretary and bookkeeper for 25 years. After closing Interiors, Inc., they moved to Denver, CO, where Joyce provided in-home healthcare and house-cleaning services.

Joyce was known for her deliciously baked cookies that brought great joy to friends, family, and especially in later years to fellow residents at Corban Manor, her residence after Bob’s death. Joyce also meticulously crafted hundreds of lap quilts to donate to assisted living centers and nursing homes.&nbsp;

Joyce’s faith in Jesus Christ provided the anchor for her entire life. She was deeply grateful for the foundation established in her early years at the Apostolic Christian Church, then later in the Burlington Faith Fellowship in Burlington, IA and the Baptist Church in Denver, CO.

After Bob’s death in 2010, Joyce spent several months a year with her daughter, Becky, and in September of 2023, she moved back to Iowa to live with Becky and Ron. During this time, she was embraced completely by their community of family, friends, and church.&nbsp;

She attended St. Paul Lutheran Church in Ankeny, IA. There will be an earlier service for her there on November 5th at 6:30 PM with 5:30 visitation.

Joyce was a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Her grandchildren were the delight of her life, and she treasured every moment spent with them—a number who lived with her for short stints!

Pallbearers will be Anthony Zerillo, Zach Pohl, Caleb Pohl, Josiah Pohl, Troy Dunlap, Kip Massner, and Chad Massner.

Roberta “Bobbie” Hillard, 86, of Burlington, died Sunday, Nov. 3, 2024, at Oakview Care and Rehabilitation Center in Burlington.

Born Aug. 7, 1938, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Robert E. and Merry J. Feikert. She married Donald J. Hillard on Feb. 3, 1962. He preceded her in death on July 3, 2017.

Bobbie worked as a personnel supervisor for JC Penney for 19 years until her retirement in 2001. She was a member of Unity Lutheran Church.

She enjoyed singing and attending Players Workshop.

She is survived by her daughter Melodie (Jon) Hoschek of West Burlington; two grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband Don.

A memorial funeral service will be held at a later date at Unity Lutheran Church. According to her wishes, cremation has been entrusted to the care of Lunning Chapel.

Miriam Ann Lawlor, 83, of West Burlington, died Sunday, Oct. 27, 2024, at the Klein Center in West Burlington. She was born Aug. 15, 1941, in Burlington, to Charles and Helen French Murphy. She was a 1959 graduate of Burlington Notre Dame High School.

She married Patrick Lawlor on Jan. 20, 1962, in St. Patrick Catholic Church in Burlington. He preceded her in death on Oct. 4, 2015.

Miriam worked for Northwestern Bell as a telephone operator, and later for the Klein Center for 17 years. She was a member of Divine Mercy Parish.

Survivors include her children Richard Lawlor (Gwen Lutz) of Wyoming, Minn. and Lisa Lawlor of Burlington; grandchildren Jordan Lutz-Midthun (Brittani), Julia Lutz-Lawlor (Aaron Albani), Bailey Ann (Billy), Kaitlin Menzel-Lutz (Matthew); great-grandchildren Braxton Allen, Brooklyn Allen, Jaxon Allen, Nolan Adams, Nora Adams, Oliver Menzel, and Finn Menzel; sisters Antoinette King (Max) of Burlington, Helen Ballard Lee of West Burlington and Patricia Ramsay (Phillip) of Neena, Wisc.; beloved nieces and nephews.

Miriam was a woman with many talents. She was an excellent pianist and could always be heard humming a tune, usually one she had made up herself. Miriam was a self-taught artist who found great joy in sketching and painting. Her artistic talent won her first place at the local 4H art exhibition and her works have been displayed around Burlington. Miriam loved connecting with her fellow residents and staff at the Klein Center; where she was a member of the Sunshine Club and could always be found attending Bingo. Miriam was a person of deep faith and valued often saying the Rosary. She was a dedicated advocate and wise counselor for her husband, children, and grandchildren. Her devotion to family and her capacity to draw others in with her quick wit will always be remembered.

The Memorial Funeral Mass for Mrs. Lawlor will be held at 3 p.m. Monday, Nov. 18 at SS Mary and Patrick Catholic Church of Divine Mercy Parish in West Burlington. The family will receive friends from 1 to 3 p.m.

Burial will be held in Sacred Heart Cemetery following the Mass.

According to her wishes, cremation has been entrusted to the care of Lunning Chapel.

Mark A. "Juice" Vorwerk, 63, died Thursday, Oct. 31, 2024, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in West Burlington.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Born Nov. 29, 1960, in Burlington, he was the son of James Edward and Mary Helen McIntire Vorwerk.

Mark worked as a truck driver throughout his career, driving for several companies.

The best way to describe Mark was "Mark is Mark". &nbsp;He was very outgoing and enjoyed spending time with his friends at The Beat. &nbsp;He enjoyed the camaraderie and watching NASCAR races during the season. &nbsp;His kind heart and boisterous personality will be missed by all who love him.

Mark's family include his nieces, Tricia (Perry) Boynton of Burlington, IA, and Taryn Vorwerk of Chicago, Ill.; great-nephew, Ari Boynton; numerous aunts and uncles; and his many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Mary; and brother, Timothy.&nbsp;

Michael C. Whittaker, 66, of Burlington, died Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2024, at the University of Iowa Hospitals &amp; Clinics in Iowa City.

Whittaker, 66, of Burlington, died Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2024, at the University of Iowa Hospitals &amp; Clinics in Iowa City.Born May 2, 1958, in Crossville, Tenn., he was the son of Curtis C. and Anna Irene Looper Whittaker. &nbsp;Michael married Donna Porter and had three children. &nbsp;He later divorced and married Carla Sherrill.Michael was a traveling man and worked several positions throughout his life, including as a Corrections and Law Enforcement Officer in Tennessee. &nbsp;He later moved to Burlington and worked at CSI Limited. &nbsp;He eventually retired from the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant. &nbsp;Michael loved singing and karaoke. He looked forward to watching the Tennessee Volunteers play, and enjoyed most college football. He enjoyed traveling and couldn't stay in one place for too long. &nbsp;Michael also appreciated quality footwear and had a sizeable collection. His family always came first. He was a member of the Jesus Christ Church of Latter Day Saints, the Freemasons and Burlington Eagles Aerie 150.&nbsp;He leaves behind his sister; Lynn (Brent) Levandoske; &nbsp;children, Brian (Shannon) Whittaker, Crystal Whittaker, Alicia (Matt) Walz, Chelsea (Tyler) Williamson, Haley (Nick) Tabor, Miranda McNeal; grandchildren, Kaci (Thomas), Arin, Cody, Alex (Megan), Haley, Alyssa, Caitlyn, Cristen, Robert, Paisley, Stormie, Gracelynn, and Wade; great-grandchildren, Anakin, Ada, Kora, Kingston, Camden; and numerous nieces and nephews.He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Burl, Kenny, and Larry Whittaker.Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh Crematory.A celebration of life will be held at a later date in Slate Springs, Tennessee. &nbsp;Details will be published when they are announced.Please continue to keep the Whittaker family in your thoughts during this difficult time.
