Jerome Paul Kersten, of Peoria, was born June 2, 1937, in Beemer, Neb. He passed away on Saturday, July 29, peacefully at home at age 86 with his family at his side.  Jerome served two years on the USS Taylor (DD/DDE-468) with tours to Hong Kong, Japan, and Okinawa.  Jerome married Shirley Mae Schulz on May 1, 1960. He was a grain merchandiser and elevator manager for ADM Growmark in Peoria, Ill., from 1958 until his retirement in 2000.

Jerome was an active, founding member of Living Waters Lutheran Church, Peoria.  He was a recent Peoria Honor Flight Veteran.  After his Parkinson’s diagnosis, Jerome boxed in the local Rock Steady program as "Saint Jerome." Jerome served his Lord with his time and talents as he volunteered in many ways, including reading Sunday Scriptures, leading bible studies, teaching Luther’s Small Catechism, tending a community garden, building ramps, and cleaning up after Hurricane Katrina in Biloxi Miss., and the tornados of Joplin, Mo., and Washington, Ill.

Jerome is survived by his wife Shirley of 63 years and their 4 daughters: Cynthia Rowley (William) of Dubuque, Iowa; Lisa Ellison (Tony) of Wever, Iowa; Teresa Anderson (Scott) of Peoria, Ill.; and Dr. Pamela Durr (Allen) of Mapleton, Ill.; 10 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; his brother Jerald Kersten (Nancy) of Omaha, Neb., and sister Joyce Pasold (Clifford) of Fremont, Neb., and many dear in-laws, cousins, nieces, and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Lavina Kersten. 

Visitation will be Friday, Aug 4, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Living Waters Lutheran Church, 7229 Knoxville Ave., Peoria. Funeral with military rites will be at the church on Saturday, Aug 5, at 11 a.m. with visitation one hour before the service.

Marjorie Ann Streeter, 86, of Burlington, died on Saturday, July 29, 2023. Born on Jan. 27, 1937, in Burlington, she was the daughter of John and Ruth Zaugg Hodel. She married Edward Streeter on Sept. 24, 1976, in Monmouth, Ill. Marge retired from Klein Manufacturing. She was a member of the Burlington Apostolic Christian Church.

Survivors include Edward’s children, Virginia (Mike) Pyle of West Burlington, &nbsp;Edward F. Streeter of North Liberty, Yvonne (Karl) Judd of Montrose, daughter-in-law Cindy (Tom) Myers of Memphis, Mo.; sisters Dorothy Rinkenberger of Spring, Texas, and Judy (Bill) Gerst of Mediapolis, brother-in-law John (Melinda) Streeter of Morrison, Colo., and sisters-in-law Yvonne Gallagher of La Jolla, Calif., and Carol Streeter of Colo. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Marge was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, five brothers-in-law, three nephews, and one niece.

Friends may call after 12 &nbsp;p.m. Thursday, Aug. 3 and the family will receive friends from 5 to 7:00 p.m. at Lunning Chapel. Kimberly Jo Coleman, 60, of Burlington, died Sunday, July 30, 2023, at Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born Dec. 10, 1962, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Joseph Howard Coleman and Judy Inghram Newberry, and Diane Goble Coleman.

She was a 1980 graduate of Burlington High School and was Valedictorian of her class.

She married Jeffrey Chalupa Oct. 3, 1982, and they later divorced. She then married John Parcel on June 24, 1989. They later divorced.

Kimm was a manager in sales for Tupperware. In addition, she worked for Sears Portrait Studio as a manager and owned and operated her own photography studio. She worked for Hope Haven and Shearers Foods and was an author, with four books published.

She was dedicated to her family and loved being a “Grammy”. She felt laughter was language, and enjoyed nothing more than sitting listening to her children talk and laugh with one another. She could make anything and loved crafting and taking yearly trips with her brother Joe and Nancy. Christmas was her utmost favorite holiday and she celebrated all year long . &nbsp;She loved music and writing songs.

She is survived by her children, Adam (Ani) Chalupa, Nicholas Chalupa, and Jessica Parcel all of Burlington, Jennifer Parcel of Crystal River, Fla., Jonathan (Sarah) Parcel, and Erin (Jason) Bradley both of Burlington; six grandchildren; Xander (Emma) Chalupa, Jenna Chalupa, Natalie Parcel, Nolan Waters, Auggie Waters and Jaxon Stratton; her mother Judy Newberry of Johnstown, Colo.; step-mother Diane Coleman of Burlington; siblings, Joe Coleman, Jeoffrey Coleman and John Coleman all of Burlington and Cindy Baldwin of Johnstown, Colo.; nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her father Joe Coleman, her brother James “Jim” Coleman, and her step-father, Harry Newberry.

The memorial funeral service for Kimm will be 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 4 at Lunning Chapel. Rev. Shane McCampbell will officiate. Visitation will be from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 3 at Lunning Chapel, where the family will receive friends.

A celebration of life will follow the funeral service at the Burlington Gym.

Larry Dean Collins, 65, of Valrico, Fla., formerly of Terre Haute, Ill., lost a two-year-long battle to lung cancer on Thursday, July 13, 2023, at Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, Fla.&nbsp; Larry was born on Dec. 20, 1957, in La Harpe, Ill., the son of Wesley R. and Lois E. Bennett Collins. He married Brenda K. Bennett on Sept. 3, 1977, at Terre Haute United Methodist Church. Larry graduated from La Harpe High School in 1976. He worked at Housewright Lumber Yard before moving to Florida to work at a family business, of Bennett Custom Homes. He later went to work for South Co. Construction, where he was a construction supervisor until he retired. Larry loved his family and enjoyed doing things for them and working on his classic cars. Leanna L. Leffel, 81, of Burlington, died Friday, July 28 at Arbor Court in Mount Pleasant.

Born Nov. 21, 1941, in Union, Iowa, she was the daughter of Richard and Inez Mitchell Wolford. She married Gary Leffel on Aug. 16, 1960, in Burlington.

Leanna was a homemaker. She enjoyed traveling with her husband and family.

She is survived by her husband, Gary Leffel of Burlington; three sons, Mitchell Leffel of Eureka, Calif., Richard Leffel of San Diego, Calif. and Michael Leffel of Stagecoach, Nev.; three grandsons, Derek Leffel, Mitchell Leffel, and Isaac Leffel; four great-grandchildren; one sister Linda Vandeman of Ashland, Neb. and one brother Darwin Wolford of Burlington.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Evelyn Orton, 80, of Danville, died Friday, July 28, 2023, at Danville Care Center in Danville.

Born Jan. 30, 1943, in Fort Madison, she was the daughter of William and Irene Knoch Brennan. She was a 1961 graduate of Fort Madison High School.

She married Earl Edward Orton on March 3, 1962. He preceded her in death on Feb. 22, 2013.

Evelyn worked for Sylvania, K-Mart, and more recently as a home health aide and homemaker.

She enjoyed gardening, canning, sewing, and reading and loved her family and friends.

She is survived by her two children; Kevin Orton of Burlington and Diane (Russ) Dorsey of Indianola; one grandchild; three brothers, Glenn (Gloria) Brennan of Council Bluffs, David (Ethea) Brennan of Edwards, Mo., and Gary Brennan of Osawatomie, Kan.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son Bryan Orton, two brothers, and one sister.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 1 at Lunning Chapel where the family will receive friends. The funeral service will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 2 at Lunning Chapel. Pastor Ron Jewett will officiate. Interment will be in Long Creek Cemetery, rural Danville.

Linda Sue Smith, 72, of Sperry, died Thursday, July 27, 2023, at Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born Oct. 4, 1950, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Harold and Dorthy (Riley) Ashby. She married John Fenton in 1969, and they later divorced. She then married Robert Smith on Sept. 3, 1976.

Linda was special in so many ways. She contributed so much of herself from boy scout leader to working for child protective services for Louisa County. She helped with the Happy Bear Program, going into schools and explaining good and bad touches and signs of child abuse to children.

She had a love for animals. She was the Hannibal Animal Shelter manager for years, during which time she saved many animals and rehomed them, helping with fundraisers to fund their programs. More recently, Linda ran and maintained security for the Burlington airport for several years.

She was the best cook, the most popular was her fried chicken. There wasn’t anything she couldn’t make. She loved to garden and had the biggest garden you would ever see. She always sat a big basket of produce at the end of her road to give away to others. She loved her family and life and will be missed greatly.

Linda is survived by her husband, Robert “Bob” Smith of Sperry; three children, Lori (Mike) Thie of Sperry, and Dean (Michelle) Fenton and Jon Fenton both of Burlington; twelve grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; lots of fur children; one sister, Donna Heland of Burlington; one brother Daryl Ashby of Burlington and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, son Troy Fenton and three brothers.

Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, July 31 at Lunning Chapel where the family will receive friends. A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. with Pastor Bruce Smith officiating.

According to her wishes, cremation has been accorded and entrusted to the care of Lunning Chapel. Burial will be at a later date in Aspen Grove Cemetery.

James Walter Harmer, 82, died July 19, 2023, after a lengthy illness.Born April 18, 1941, in Burlington, he was the son of Daisy and Robert Harmer. He married Lucinda Heater and together they had two daughters, Renee and Glenna. They later divorced. James then met the love of his life Doyce, and they married.

He was a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Air Force for four years, supervisor in the testing department of the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant and later worked in the automobile business for 35 years in roles ranging from service manager to president and general manager. He retired from Ron Smith Buick in Merced, Calif. after working as a sales consultant for 19 years.&nbsp;

Jim was a member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars as well as a member of the Optimist Club, Coin Club, and local Neighborhood Watch. He enjoyed photography, traveling overseas and exploring California and the national parks, especially Yosemite, staying in touch with his high school classmates, and cooking. He was known for his rib dinners.

Jim is survived by his wife of 45 years, Doyce and his six children, Renee (Damion) Piper, Glenna Nordstrom, Vicky Pebsworth, Rex Pebsworth, Terri Pebsworth and Paula (Keith Riggle) Pebsworth; ten grandchildren, Daniel, Alex, Sierra, Brooke, Sam, Ben, Megan, Madison, Abigail and Bryce; four great-grandchildren, Brienna, Quinn, Jaxon and Holly. He is also survived by his sisters Maryann (Larry) Werner and Geraldine Peavy, and many nieces and nephews including special niece Kay (Tim) Evans.

He was preceded in death by his sister Dorothy Fehseke and brothers Roland and Robert Hahn and former wife Lucinda Heater.

Visitation will be from 9 to 11:00 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 3, 2023, at Prugh Funeral Service, 3940 Division Street. Full military honors will be rendered by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard following the visitation.&nbsp;

The Graveside Committal Service for Mr. Harmer will be 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 3, 2023, at Aspen Grove Cemetery. &nbsp;A time of food and fellowship will be held in the community room at Prugh Funeral Service following the burial. A memorial gathering will be held in Merced, California at a future date.

Pamela Sue Scott, 67, of Salem, died Sunday, July 23, 2023, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in West Burlington.

Pamela was born on Jan. 13, 1956, in Macomb, Ill. the daughter of Robert and Catherine Feehan Barnes, Sr.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;She was united in marriage to Gary Scott, Sr., who preceded her in death in 1976.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Pamela was a very loving, caring person who was always there for her family and friends.&nbsp;&nbsp;She loved to be outside fishing and hunting mushrooms and taking care of her pets.&nbsp;&nbsp;She was a great cook, but most of all spending time with her family was the most important thing to her.

She is survived by her children, Gary (Kimberly) Scott, Jr. of Burlington and Anna Webb (Pat Kinaman) of Salem, her grandchildren, Britny, Dominick, Tracey, Isaac, Ady, Braiden, Raelenya, Abigail, and Dillion, two great-grandchildren, her sister, Connie Henry, of Carman, Ill., her step brothers and sisters, John Feehan, of Mt. Pleasant, Steve Feehan, of Salem, Linda Weir, of Rome and Carla Woodsmall, of Lockridge,&nbsp;&nbsp;along with several nieces and nephews.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Pamela was preceded in death by her parents, her sister, Becky Barnes, her brother, Robert Barnes, Jr., and a step-sister, Ilene Duncan.

Norma Jean Smith, 85, of West Burlington, died Saturday, July 22, 2023, surrounded by family.&nbsp;

Born April 3, 1938, in Clinton, she was the daughter of Roy and Pansy Holman Rice. She was raised by her Uncle Mart. On May 12, 1956, she married Maurice Alton Smith in Morrison, Ill. He died Jan. 31, 2002.

Survivors include her children, Cheryl Noble, Bobbie &nbsp;Scovern, Maurice &nbsp;Smith, Jr., and Marty Smith; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Norma has chosen to donate her body to the University of Iowa Deeded Body Program to continue the educational development of future generations. There will be no formal services.&nbsp;

Joseph E. “Joe” Deal, 82, of Burlington, died unexpectedly Saturday, July 15, 2023, in Panama City, Panama.

Born Aug. 1, 1940, in Spring Valley, Ill., he was the son of Sanford and Alice Glover Deal. After graduating from DePue Illinois High School, he earned his bachelor’s degree from Elmhurst College.

He served in the Army during the Vietnam War.

Joe married Sandra Holtman on Feb. 12, 1966, in Ursa, Ill.

Prior to purchasing Central Duplicating, which he owned and operated for 22 years, Joe worked for the AB Dick Company in Chicago and resided in Lombard, Ill. He currently was serving as president of the MFS Insurance Company board. In addition, Joe served on the governing board of the Mayflower Community an affiliation of the United Church of Christ, as well as served on the United Church of Christ Conference Board. Joe also received his NCAA official certification for swimming.

He was a member of Zion United Church of Christ and served on the consistory and sang in the church choir.

Joe was very sociable and loved to talk with and visit people. He did not know a stranger, he loved to tease and joke around and had an infectious smile that would light up a room.

He is survived by his wife Sandra Deal of Burlington; three daughters, Diana (Scott) Casady of Waukee, Julie Deal of Portland, Ore. and Andrea (Tony) Lallis of Troy, Mo.; three granddaughters, Ainsley Drinkall, Finley Casady, Zoey Lallis; two grandsons, Jamison Lallis and Bailey Lallis; one brother John Deal; three sister-in-laws Wilna Johnston, Jeanette Werner and Sylvia (Ralph) Baxter as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three siblings, Mary Jean Carstons, Warren Johnston and Robert Johnston.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7:00 p.m. Monday, August 7 at Lunning Chapel, where the family will receive friends. A memorial funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, August 8 at Zion United Church of Christ. Rev. Carolyn Blair will officiate. A private family burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.

Joseph “Joe” Deal

Jeanette &nbsp;J. “Jenny”Gallagher, 89, of Burlington died Friday, July 21, 2023 at Oakview Nursing and Rehab in Burlington.

Born April 22, 1934 on a farm near Bonaparte, she was the daughter of LeRoy O. and Thelma P. Weller Schmidt.

On Oct. 13, 1956 she married Raymond John Gallagher in Burlington. They shared 44 years of marriage until his death on Nov. 22, 2000.

During Jenny’s childhood she spent most of her time outdoors helping work on the family farm. While in 4th grade, her family moved to a farm near Stockport. She was active in both Girls and Boys 4-H, showing Black Angus cattle at the Van Buren County Fair. She played 6 on 6 basketball and graduated from Stockport High School in 1952.

After graduation she attended American Institute of Commerce (AIC) Business School in Davenport. While there she played 5 on 5 amateur (AAU) basketball, traveling by car throughout the central and eastern United States.

Jenny moved to Burlington in 1953 and worked for McKesson &amp; Robbins Drug Co. In 1957 she worked for Mason &amp; Hanger-Silas Mason Co., Inc. at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant in Middletown. She was employed there in 1964 with the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission (AEC). In 1974 she transferred to the Burlington Social Security Administration (SSA) office. In 1987 she transferred to the Department of the Army in Middletown where she worked until retirement in 1993 with over 29 years of government employment.

Jenny was a former Cub Scout den mother and den leader coach, past member of National Secretaries’ Association, Business &amp; Professional Women’s Club and served on the Des Moines County Humane Society board. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, National Association of Retired Federal Employees (NARFE), and did volunteer work for the Des Moines County American Red Cross and Community Emergency Response Team (CERT).

For many years Jenny was a certified All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) Safety Instructor for the ATV Safety Institute where she taught the ATV Rider Course in Fairfield and at other sites in the Midwest. She also worked part time for Zaiser’s Florist in Burlington where she watered and cared for plants inside Great River Medical Center (GRMC) in West Burlington. Many called her “the Plant Lady”.

Jenny loved collecting and reading cookbooks and was always trying new recipes for her family and friends. For many years she baked and decorated wedding and birthday cakes. She enjoyed volunteer work, helping people, working outdoors and was an avid animal lover, especially caring for her dog and cats, watching wildlife and feeding birds. Her greatest love was helping and spending time with family at home and at family gatherings. She especially enjoyed shopping trips with her grandchildren.

Survivors include one son, Michael Ray (Sheila) Gallagher of Burlington; two grandchildren Morgan Ray Gallagher and Melissa Jeanette (Rob) Stanton; two step-grandchildren Sarah (Matt) Emmett, parents of Clayton, Mady, Jackson and Lincoln, Sonya Bryant, mother of Anthony, Olivia and Takumi; one brother, LeRoy “Duke” (Cid) Schmidt Jr. of Fairfield and cousins, nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband, she is preceded in death by her parents and one infant brother.

The funeral service for Jenny will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 26 at Lunning Chapel with Pastor Dan Fernandez officiating. Interment will follow in Aspen Grove Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 25 at Lunning Chapel.

A memorial has been established for the Des Moines County Humane Society.

Mary Grothe, 85, of Danville, died Tuesday, July 18, 2023, at the Clarissa Cook Hospice House in Bettendorf.

Born Jan. 6, 1938, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Urban and Hazel Huppenberger Walz. On Nov. 26, 1959, she married Robert Anthony Grothe in Burlington. He preceded her in death on April 4, 2016.

Mary was a graduate of Burlington Catholic High School.&nbsp;

She was a devoted stay-at-home mother while raising her kids. She later worked as a payroll clerk for Burlington Medical Center for 20 years.

Mary was a member of Divine Mercy Parish- SS Mary and Patrick Catholic Church in West Burlington. She was always very artistic and enjoyed drawing and painting. She also liked camping and playing Scrabble. Mary was a great caregiver for her husband and her family and she dearly loved spending time with her grandchildren.

Survivors include her son, Andy (Cindy) Grothe of Bettendorf; daughter, Lauri Glasgow of Kansas City; three grandchildren, Gabrielle (Ezzio) Jacquez of Texas, Grace Grothe of Clearwater, Fla., and Travis (Casey) Volrath of Princeton; great-grandchild, Eastin Volrath of Princeton; three brothers, Tony Walz of Fort Madison, Ed (Sue) Walz of Dubuque, and Joe (Joyce) Walz of Denver, Colo.; and sister, Anne (Terry) Vancil of Perry.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and sister-in-law, Judy Walz.

Timothy M. Grant, 64, died Monday, July 17, 2023, at Genesis Medical Center, in Davenport, Iowa.

Born March 28, 1959, in Wood River, Illinois, he was the son of Oscar and Nellie (Fox) Grant Hellemeyer. He married Lisa Brunk on May 16, 1998.

Tim earned his master’s degree from American International University in Business Administration and Healthcare Management and worked as a Medical Technologist for over 40 years, ending his career as a lab manager. In addition, he had been a substitute teacher for the Dallas City and Central Illinois public school system and taught one semester at Southeastern Community College. He was an Army veteran.

Tim enjoyed making crafts and sold them at many shows, most recently at the Very Vintage Market held in downtown Burlington. He loved fishing and Sci-Fi. He was a very giving and generous man to all that knew him, he was patient with teaching people to do things and was “wicked smart”. Tim always tried to do for others.

He is survived by his wife, Lisa Grant of Danville; his daughter, Carmen Grant of Warsaw, Ill.; two grandchildren, Kyler Grant Leonard and Mili Willing; his mother, Nellie Hellemeyer of Fort Madison; sister, Stacy Grant (Brian Gistover) of Fort Madison; brother, Tom (Michelle) Grant of Pierron, Ill.; mother and father-in-law, Steven and Beverly Brunk of Danville; brother-in-law, Troy (Allison) Brunk of Cedar Rapids; and several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews and his three furry kids, Remi, Quincy, Tipper.

He was preceded in death by his father, paternal and maternal grandparents and sister-in-law Mary Grant.

Timothy M. Grant

James E. Neumann, 85, died of an aneurysm in his brain July 11 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City. His family was with him.

Mr. Neumann spent his youngest years in and near Arenzville, Ill.. The family moved to Chicago when his father was appointed pastor at Luther Memorial Church on Wilson Avenue. He often shared stories about delivering the Chicago Tribune, taking the El downtown for piano lessons, and life on the Chicago streets. He was proud of a scholarship he received for art classes at the Art Institute and of his alma mater Lane Tech College Prep High School. He majored in art at Colorado College.&nbsp;

After graduation, he enlisted in the army and was stationed in the demilitarized zone in Korea.&nbsp;

He received his MA in printmaking and later his MFA in painting at the University of Iowa. It was there he met his future wife by winking at her across the print room. He was an excellent winker. They were married in Burlington at the bride’s family home overlooking the Mississippi.&nbsp;

Mr. Neumann always said that art was what he was meant to do. His first jobs were as gallery director at the Asheville Museum of Art and then as Director of Education at the Greenville County Museum of Art. Most significantly, he taught printmaking for 30 plus years at Western Illinois University in Macomb, Ill. Devoted to his students, he worked alongside them in his print room, teaching by example, demonstration and philosophy. Although formally trained in Intaglio and relief techniques, he was interested in many different mediums and made sculptures, lithographs, and weavings. He built tables, bookcases, music stands, toys and a screened-in porch on the back of the house. After retiring and while waiting on the transplant list, he learned to make pots. In his eighties he worked primarily in ink pen and acrylic paint and often stated that he was making the best art of his life. He made art every day, including the day he died. His daughters agree that he was the best dad. He taught them to make prints, to really look at things, to draw with a sharp pencil. He taught one to build structures strong and secure and he taught the other that if you handed over the hammer to your father he would finish the nail. He always carried their violins.&nbsp;

Mr. Neumann had health challenges throughout his life including two brain bleeds and a brain operation. He was diagnosed with idiopathic cirrhosis of the liver in his early 60s. In 2008 he received the miracle of a liver transplant. His grandson said “I got to know Grandfather for 21 years, and I was not supposed to. He was supposed to die when I was 5.” The family is forever thankful to the transplant team at the UI, health care providers who have cared for him over the years and the anonymous donor who gave him extra time.

He was preceded in death by his father, mother and brother Michael.&nbsp;

Survivors include his wife of 57 years Jean Cooper Neumann, daughters Mary and Helen, grandchildren Irene Rose and Billy James, siblings Krista and David, and many loved cousins, and nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind a cat named Maude and 4000 pots.&nbsp;

An art show and celebration of life is being planned for a later date.

Robert &nbsp;E. "Bobby" Bauer, 80, of West Burlington, died Friday, July 14, 2023, at his home.

Born Oct. &nbsp;11, 1942, in Madison, Minn., he was the son of Fredrick and Martha Croatt Bauer.&nbsp;

Upon graduating High School, Robert served in the United States Air Force for four years. After his service, he worked all of his work life for Armor Meat Packing.

Robert was a very social person and he enjoyed going to the casino and spending time with his friends.

Survivors include his two sisters, Elizabeth Raasch of Moorhead, Minn. and Jane Bauer of Willmar, Minn. and many cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Jim Bauer and sister, Lois Bauer.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh Crematory.

John Edward McMillan, 50, of Burlington, died Tuesday, July 18, 2023, at his home.

Born Jan. 5, 1973, in Burlington, he was the son of Robert McMillan Jr. and Mary Ellen Norton McMillan.

John was a jack of all trades and a very talented mechanic. He was proud of his tattoos, loved his cats and spending time fishing but most importantly being around his nieces and nephews.

He is survived by his parents, Robert McMillan Jr. and Mary Ellen McMillan both of Burlington; sister, Faylea “Fay” Augsberger; two brothers, Roger McMillan and Martin McMillan; two nieces, Dalaina (Tim) Burns and Samantha (Matt Seaney) Osborne; great nieces, Cheyenne Nichols, Alivia Burns, Lillian Morse and Laila Osborne; great nephews, Lucas Seaney and Timothy Burns Jr. and special friend Dawn Estes all of Burlington.

John Edward McMillan

Larry Zahner, 66, longtime businessman of Burlington, died Saturday, July 8, 2023. He was surrounded by his family at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in West Burlington.

Larry was born on Oct. 12, 1956, in Burlington. He was the son of Darrel and Shirley Stafford Zahner.&nbsp; He was well known for his baseball talents, especially during the time that he played for Burlington High School. Along with his teammates, he went on to become a state champion in the fall of 1973. Larry started working at a young age with his grandparents who owned the Winona Monument Company in Burlington. He went on become the owner and established his business as Zahner Memorials.&nbsp;&nbsp;Larry took a great deal of pride in his business of nearly 40 years and the work he did for others.&nbsp; He was known for his honesty, fairness, and caring heart. Aside from the time he dedicated to his career, Larry enjoyed hunting with his buddies and fishing with friends and family up at Lake of the Woods in Minnesota. He was a member of the Sportsman Club of Burlington and Ducks Unlimited.

He is survived by his mother, Shirley Zahner of Burlington, his brothers, Tim (Ronda) Zahner of Shell Rock, David (Jodi) Zahner of Cedar Rapids, Kenneth (Brenda) Zahner of Burlington, his sister, Rose Klein of Burlington, his nieces, Leah (Matt) Weinreich of Burlington, Paige Zahner (Joshua Marroquin) of Cedar Rapids, and Emily Zahner of Des Moines, his nephews, Chad (Krystal) Klein of Burlington, Andrew (Kristin) Klein of Fairfax, Jason, Nick, and Tyler Zahner, Coleton, Jacob, and Joshua Zahner of Burlington, and Zak Zahner of Cedar Rapids, several great nieces and nephews, along with a host of friends.

Larry was preceded in death by his grandparents, Donald “Don” and Genevieve “Jennie” Zahner, and his father, Darrel Zahner.

Dorothy Mae Gerst, 90, of Burlington, died Thursday, July 13, 2023, at the Addington Place in Burlington.

Born Feb. 1, 1933, in Bardolph, Ill., she was the daughter of Herbert and Helen Griffeth. &nbsp;On Aug. 1, 1959, she married Marion "Hank" Gerst in Burlington. &nbsp;He died March 13, 1988.

She attended country grade schools and graduated from Carthage Community High School, Carthage, Ill.

Dorothy was a secretary the majority of her life and at one time was employed at Sylvania Plant.

She was a member of SS. John &amp; Paul Catholic Church. &nbsp;She enjoyed attending and supporting both her granddaughters' activities. &nbsp;She loved taking bus trips with friends, reading, and watching tennis on TV.

Survivors include her son, Patrick Gerst of West Burlington; two granddaughters, Crystal Klein of Burlington, and Amber Gerst of Danville; one great-granddaughter, Haley Foley of Burlington; and several nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband she was preceded in death by her parents, one son, Todd Gerst, one sister, three brothers, one niece and nephew.

Delores F. Judd, 70, of Burlington, died Thursday, July 13, 2023, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in West Burlington.

Born July 6, 1953, in Kansas City, Mo., she was the daughter of Lyle Emmitt and Mary Louise Tucker Sawyer. She married James Judd on July 5, 1989. He died Feb. 4, 2016.

Delores worked for Heartland Packaging for over 20 years until her retirement in 2015.

She loved playing and researching on her tablet, crocheting, talking on the phone and playing bingo. She was an avid reader and loved being with her family.

She is survived by her four children; Christina Carlson-Judd, Michelle Sawyer, Jamie Calhoon and Brandon Calhoon all of Burlington; eight grandchildren; several great grandchildren; two sisters, Linda DeSpain of Mt. Pleasant, Yvonne (Lawrence) Bragg of Kirksville, Mo. and Garland Sawyer of Quincy, Ill. and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband James.

According to her wishes, cremation has been accorded and entrusted to the care of Lunning Chapel. There will be no formal services. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery at a later date.

Gail L. Rose died Thursday, July 13, 2023.

Born Jan. 7, 1950, in Burlington, he was the son of Donald Dwayne and Leota Fay Seitz Rose.

Gail worked in the parts department for Hockett Toyota, later for H &amp; R Block and finally retired in 1998 after 20 years of serving as a dispatcher with the Burlington Police Department.

He was a relentless Chicago Cubs, Chicago Bears and Iowa Hawkeyes fan, and an avid outdoorsman. He loved fishing and spent many hours making his own lures, sinkers and tackle. He enjoyed woodworking, and could build anything.

Gail spent many years coaching little league in Oquawka, Ill. and loved to run into and visit his former players. He has a beautiful voice and was an amazing singer and guitar player.

Above all else, he adored his children and grandchildren and cherished the time he spent with them.

He will be greatly missed by his two children; Michael (Kelsie) Rose of Harglin, Texas and Cassandra “Cassie” (Austin) Belknap of Burlington; his four grandchildren, X’Zayvian “Boogie” Nicholson, Kaprie Thomas, Timber Rose and Pearl Rose; his siblings, Dennis (Carol) Rose of Burlington and Susan (Kevin) Sumpter of Oquawka, Ill., sister-in-law Marilyn Rose and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Ned Fry will officiate. Burial will follow at Aspen Grove Cemetery. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the funeral service.A memorial has been established for the family.
