Donald Robert Manning Sr., 81, of Lomax, Ill., died at 11:57 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 30, 2023, at the Roseville Nursing &amp; Rehabilitation in Roseville, Ill.

Donald was born Sept. 12, 1942, in Mount Pleasant, the son of Robert and Erma Lee Manning. In 1960, he married Ila Harris. They later divorced. In 1973, he married Cheryl Kern. They later divorced.&nbsp;

Donald was raised and educated in the Mount Pleasant and Washington, Iowa areas. He worked all of his life for Woods Construction in Washington, Iowa. Following his retirement, he moved to the Lomax area to be closer to his family.&nbsp;

He enjoyed going to auctions, camping, teasing, and telling jokes, he especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.&nbsp;

Survivors include two sons: Don Manning Jr. of Four Madison, and Tim Manning of Lomax; four daughters: Bev (Vince) Nixon of Ainsworth, Barb Manning of Lomax, Connie (Shane Downs) Brockett of Lomax and Lesley Cratton of Burlington; 10 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.&nbsp;

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers: Leroy Metcalf and Larry Manning and one sister: Kathy Cook.

Cremation has been entrusted to Banks &amp; Beals Funeral Home.

A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2023, at Grace Bible Church in Dallas City, Ill. Burial will be held at a later date in Carman Cemetery.&nbsp;

Marc Charles Moeller, 69, died Nov. 30 in Mount Pleasant. Marc was born on Jan. 4, 1954, in Denison, the son of George Arnold and Elvera Marie Schultz Moeller. He was baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig, Iowa. Marc graduated from Schleswig Community High School in 1972 and the University of Iowa in 1976.

Marc married Sharon Mae (Shari) Thompson on June 26, 1982, in Newhall. He worked as an agricultural lender in communities including Keystone, Newhall, Washington, Mount Pleasant, and Pilot Grove. Marc was an active member of Faith Lutheran Church in Mount Pleasant.

Marc was preceded in death by his parents and older siblings Larry, Connie, and Dennis Moeller. Survivors include his wife Shari; daughter Jill of Lander, Wy.; son Tyler (Josie) and their sons Leo, Hugo, and Otto of Mount Pleasant; and daughter Lisa (Colby) Bycroft of Ankeny; brother Louis Moeller of Atkins; sister Carla (Bob) Schmidt of Pierre, S.D.; many brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, cousins, nieces, nephews, great friends and helpful neighbors.

Marc Charles Moeller

Dean Boysen, 87, of West Burlington, died Friday, Dec. 1, 2023, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in West Burlington.

Born June 10, 1936, in Denison, he was the son of Henry F. and Inez Childress Boysen and lived with his parents on the family farm in Deloit. Dean proudly served his country in the US Army prior to the start of the Vietnam War, he was stationed in Panama.

On April 22, 1977, he married Margaret Virginia West in Burlington. From this union, Dean gained three additional sons, Larry, Joe, and Donnie. Dean and Virginia also added a daughter DeeAnn to the family. Virginia preceded him in death on June 27, 2019.

Dean was a High Lineworker and Lineman working for Local Union 55 IEBW around his hometown and moving across the state of Iowa until he landed in Burlington. He worked for them for 27 years. He and his wife, Virginia, then ran the Plaza Pub Tavern in Burlington, Iowa for seven fun-filled years, where many friends and memories were made. After leaving the pub, Dean worked for Drain Doctor and many other jobs over the years.&nbsp;

Dean was confirmed in the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. He enjoyed fishing going for walks and helping his neighbors. Dean was a handyman and was always busy working on something or working in his yard. He will be lovingly remembered for his great sense of humor.&nbsp;

Survivors include his daughter, DeeAnn (Scot) Bokhoven of New Sharon; two sons, Larry West of Athens, Ill. and Joe (Marlene) O'Donnell of Burlington; former daughter-in-law, Kathy West; 14 grandchildren, Trisha (Dan), Ryan (Shannon), Megan (Logan), Michael (Shonna), Dezmon (Candice), David (Sarah), Christine, and Caleb; 10 great-grandchildren; Kayla, Tyler, Lauryn, Elizabeth, Makayla, Miles, Micah, Layla, Nolan and Aiden; brother, Don Boysen of West Plains, Mo.; and several nieces and nephews.

Besides his wife of 42 years, he was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, Hubert, Leonard, Melvin, Jim and Joe; one son, Donald Shuster; grandson, Shane West; great-grandson, Hunter O'Donnell and one sister, LaVurne Boysen.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh Crematory.

Family will receive friends from 9:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 9, 2023, at Prugh Funeral Service, 3940 Division Street.

Dorothy Ann Schneden, 94, of West Burlington, died Thursday, Nov. 30, 2023, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in West Burlington.

Born Aug. 10, 1929, in Clark County, Mo., she was the daughter of John and Lelia McDermott Ellison. On Dec. 26, 1957, she married Virgil Schneden in Keokuk. He preceded her in death on Nov. 29, 2008.

Dorothy was a member of Divine Mercy Parish and the Altar and Rosary Society. She enjoyed cooking, especially for family dinners, and served many funeral luncheons. She was handy with crafty things and enjoyed ceramics, was an avid NASCAR fan, and enjoyed watching her favorite driver Mark Martin. In addition to being a homemaker, she volunteered for many years at the hospital gift shop.

She is survived by her four children: Sister Peggy Duffy of West Burlington, Lisa Coy of Bettendorf, and Terry (Diana) Schneden and John (Janene) Schneden both of Burlington; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren with one on the way and one sister Mary (Fritz) Schneider of Keokuk.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one sister Martha Self, and two brothers Tom Ellison and Pat Ellison.

The Mass of Christian Burial for Mrs. Schneden will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 5 at SS. Mary and Patrick Catholic Church of Divine Mercy Parish in West Burlington. The Rev. Father Dominic Nguyen will be the celebrant.

Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery in West Burlington.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, Dec. 4 at Lunning Chapel where the family will receive friends.

William Theodore Preuss, 96, of West Burlington, died Dec. 1 at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House surrounded by his daughters.&nbsp;

William (also known as “Ted” or “Bill”) was born May 25, 1927, in New. London, Iowa to Loren Elliott and Walter Preuss. He graduated from New London High School. He was a World War II-era veteran, serving in the US Army. He was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church.

In 1952, he married Joanne Glenn in West Burlington, where they made their home and raised their family in the years ahead.

Ted worked at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant for more than 20 years. He later joined the Maintenance Department of the Burlington School District.

A friend to all, Ted enjoyed a full, fun, and active life. He loved fishing, golf, bowling, “dropping a few nickels” in his favorite slot machines, working on cars, The Lawrence Welk Show, and spending time with friends and family. He was always up for a great buffet and a drive down to the Mississippi River. He remained in his home after Joanne’s passing in 2008.

Survivors include his three daughters: Martha (John) Kruse, Council Bluffs, Iowa; Nancy Preuss, West Burlington, and Barb (Shelly Albus) Preuss, West Des Moines. Two grandchildren: Brian (Tory) Kruse of Perry, Ohio, and Bonnie Kruse, Omaha, Neb. and. Three great-grandchildren: Avery, Carter, and Braxton Kruse of Perry, Ohio. One brother: Dr. Donald Preuss of Table Rock Lake, Mo., and several nieces and nephews.

Ted was preceded in death by his wife Joanne, sister Freda McKinnon, many dear friends, and his cherished rescue dogs.

His daughters would like to thank family members, friends, neighbors in Washington Heights, and the team at Advanced Home Health Care for helping him stay safe and happy at home in his later years.

Visitation will be Saturday, Dec. 9 at 2 p.m. at Lunning Chapel with memorial service immediately following at 3 p.m. with the Rev. Dean Graber officiating. Alexander Earl Spiker, 48, of West Burlington, died Monday, Nov. 27, 2023, at his home.

Born Aug. 13, 1975, in Monmouth, Ill., he was the son of John L. and Connie S. Whitmore Spiker. On Oct. 7, 2017, he married Linda Liby in Stronghurst, Ill.&nbsp;

Alex attended Oquawka Grade School, Tri Valley Middle School in Gladstone, Ill. and Union High School in Biggsville, Ill., and Southeastern Community College.

He worked for Raiders Pre Cast Concrete, Carl A. Nelson plant services, and most recently for Huffman Welding and Fabrication out of Fort Madison.

Alex enjoyed working on older cars and was always tinkering around in the garage. He was an avid Dallas Cowboys fan and enjoyed riding motorcycles, boats, four-wheelers, and nearly anything with an engine. The true loves of his life were his son and grandson. Alex loved being a father and grandfather to them.

Alexander Earl Spiker

Jule A. Bardy, 81, of Burlington, died Tuesday, Nov. 28, 2023, at OakView Nursing Home and Rehabilitation in Burlington.

Born Sept. 11, 1942, in Superior, Wis., she was the daughter of Joseph John and Ann Agnes Stralka Sitek. On Sept. 23, 1972, she married the love of her life, David Charles Bardy in Superior, Wis. The couple met when the railroads they were working for merged in 1970.&nbsp;

Jule worked at Burlington Northern Railroad for nine years, Kirlin's Hallmark for nine years, and at Target for nine years.

She was a member of SS. Mary and Patrick Catholic Church and the Altar and Rosary Society. She enjoyed knitting, playing cards, and going to the casino and she dearly loved spending time with her grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband of 51 years, David Bardy of Burlington; son, Randy of Burnsville, Minn.; daughter, Wendy (Art) of North Liberty; three grandchildren, Christine, Eli and Evan; one great-granddaughter, Persephone; three brothers, Joseph (Mary) Sitek of Deluth, Minn., Daniel (Cheryl) Sitek of Superior, Wis., and Conrad (Julie) Sitek of Roseville, Minn.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her twin sister, Mary Kay Maki.

The Memorial Mass of the Resurrection for Mrs. Bardy will be 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 4, 2023, at SS. Mary and Patrick Catholic Church, West Burlington. A time of food and fellowship will be held at the SS. Mary and Patrick Church Hall following the mass. Entombment will be in Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery at a later date.

A memorial has been established for Divine Mercy Parish.

Marvin “Roy” Lansing Jr, 58, of Burlington, died Sunday, Nov. 26, 2023, at the University of Iowa Hospital after a 20-year battle with severe health conditions. Born, June 3, 1965, in Centerville, Ill., he was the son of Marvin Roy and Margaret Schaefer Lansing Sr. Roy was of the Catholic faith.

He graduated from Assumption High School in Washington Park, Ill. in 1983. He attended Belleville Area Community College after graduation. He worked for Crescent Electric Supply Company which moved him to Iowa in 1995 as the branch manager in Burlington. He also worked part-time for the Des Moines County Sheriff's Department. He loved working in law enforcement.

On Nov. 4, 1989, he married Betty French Lansing. They just celebrated 34 years of marriage.

Roy was an avid Los Angeles Dodgers fan and Duke basketball fan. He enjoyed watching both on TV. His best moments were spent with his two boys and his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife Betty of 34 years; two sons Ryan James Lansing and Tyler Joseph (Allison) Lansing; one granddaughter Natalie Lansing; one grandson Brodie Lansing; one brother James (Jeanine) Lansing; two sisters-in-law Bonnie (Gary) Rohr and Barbara (Robert) Pfeiffer and many nieces and nephews.

Roy was preceded in death by his parents and one grandson Carter Joseph Lansing.

Per Roy’s wishes, no services will be held.

In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established in his memory.

Robert “Bob” Bliesener,65, died in West Burlington, on Wednesday, Nov. 22, 2023. Bob was born to Ronald and Roberta Gabeline Bliesener on July 23, 1957, in Burlington. 

Bob made his home in West Burlington. He worked as a contractor for Community Development Group, owned by Brian and Tammy Hopkins, for over 23 years. He also worked for a lot of his “lady friends”. He was the manager for a couple of Tag Sale companies. Bob was very knowledgeable about antiques, collectibles, and primitive junk. Bob loved garage sales, yard sales, and tag sales and was often first in line to get the “best stuff” being offered. Bob could play piano beautifully and never had lessons. Bob was kind to all the stray cats and kittens in the neighborhood, always offering food. Bob always made food for his friends who celebrated holidays as he wanted to share in their celebrations. Bob loved to decorate for the holidays with an emphasis on Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. A quiet man, Bob always was helpful and kind to so many people he knew and strangers he met. Those that Bob knew always could count on him to smile and share something very nice in the conversations. Bob will be missed by many friends. He would always say “Make every day the best you can.” And never say “Goodbye” but “See you later.”

John E. "Jack" Schmidt, 95, of Burlington, died Tuesday, Nov.28, 2023, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in West Burlington. Born Feb. 26, 1928, in Ottumwa, he was the son of Clarence and Grace Wren Schmidt. On Sept. 26, 1950, he married Patricia Jeanne Hervey in Ottumwa. She preceded him in death on Jan. 2, 2012. He attended St. Ambrose University. He worked as a purchasing agent for the Kenmar Manufacturing Company in Ottumwa for seven years, then as an upholstery buyer for Chittenden &amp; Eastman in Burlington. He was a salesman at MPI in Fort Worth, Texas for 25 years and most recently, a salesman at Furniture City in West Burlington.&nbsp; He was a U.S. Marines Veteran, serving from 1946 until 1948. While enlisted, he played basketball on the official Marine team. He was of Catholic faith and was a member of Divine Mercy Parish. He had a strong faith and said the rosary daily. Jack was devoted to his family and enjoyed attending family gatherings and spending time at their cabin on the backwaters of the river. He also liked to socialize with his friends at Joe's Inn. He was a great storyteller and had a wonderful sense of humor. He enjoyed watching the Lawrence Welk show. He was a dedicated supporter of Burlington Notre Dame School and was an avid Iowa Hawkeyes fan. He followed High School sports across the state and would often comment on which schools had strong teams each year.&nbsp; He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 10102, American Legion Post 52, Hamilton-Walters Marine Corps League, a 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus, and a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles.&nbsp; Survivors include his son, Greg (Maureen) Schmidt of Leawood, Kan.; six daughters, Christine (Jim) Corkery of Bridgeton, Mo., Janet Schmidt of Muscatine, Julie (Pat) Kelley, Carol (Larry) Lindhart, Lisa (Mike) Smith all of Burlington, Anne (Chris) Lansing of Davenport; 18 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews; two sisters, Sue Tharp of Sheboygan, Wis., Helen Clemens of Ottumwa; and his cat, Pepper. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and two brothers, Msgr. John E. "Jack" Schmidt

Lonnie Eugene Lewis of Dallas City, Ill. died Saturday, Nov. 25, 2023, at his home. He was born Feb. 14, 1949, in Monmouth, Ill., the son of Everette Eugene and Jane Cordelia Lewis. He only has one surviving child, Bobbie, but he had lots of grandchildren whom he loved dearly.

He was known to be an extremely hard worker who never left something half-done. He was an adamant animal lover who was particularly fond of pugs and went on to start The Good Shepard.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters, Glenda and Rose, his brother Ron, his niece, Tiffany, and his daughter Crystal.

He is survived by his son Robert Lee Lewis of Oakville, his grandchildren, Jeremy, Dakota, Leigha, and Ricky, four great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Cremation has been entrusted to Banks &amp; Beals Funeral Home. A service will be held at the Oakville Community Center, 104 East Ash Street, Oakville, on Dec. 2, 2023, at 10 a.m.

The family requests that flowers be sent to the Oakville Community Center and that donations be made to PAWS animal shelter in Fort Madison.&nbsp;

Thomas Swan, 58, of Newton, died Thursday, Nov. 23, 2023, at the Newton Health Care Center.

Born June 26, 1965, in Albia, he was the son of Oscar O. Swan and Naoma Kirby Bristol. On Sept. 28, 1985, he married Martha Fleagle and together they had two children. He later married Tracy Fanning in 2000 and they later divorced. &nbsp;

He was a devoted Minnesota Vikings and Iowa Hawkeye fan. He enjoyed playing darts, pool, singing karaoke, especially Elvis and KISS. He was also a fan of Junior Talley, an Elvis impersonator.

Survivors include his daughter, Nichole Gonzalez of Burlington; son, Aaron Swan of Farmington; grandchild, Grace; six siblings, Carol (Clifford) Kingery of Newton, Robert (Mary) Swan of San Antonio, Texas, Geoffrey Swan of Helena, Mont., Teresa (Larry) Buck of Burlington, Bradly Swan of Newton and William Bristol of Brownsville, Texas; two sisters-in-law, Patricia Swan of Newton, and Gwen Swan of Rogers, Ark.; brother-in-law, Richards Closser of Floris and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, Junior, Kenneth, David and Steven Swan; sister, Connie Closser and newphew, George "Joe" Marshall.

Thomas Swan

Jean M. McKinney, 93, of West Burlington, died Saturday, Nov. 25, 2023, at Oakview Care and Rehabilitation Center in Burlington.

Born Feb. 7, 1930, in St. Louis, Mo., she was the daughter of Joseph and Frances Schroeder Engelmeyer.

After graduating high school, she graduated from Quincy College in 1962, in Quincy, Ill. and earned her master’s degree in music education through the University of Illinois.

She taught music education for elementary students in Hileah, Florida, Griggsville, Ill. and Fort Madison and was an orchestra instructor for 20 years for the Burlington school district.

She was a devout Catholic and member of Divine Mercy Parish and was honored to meet Pope John Paul II in St. Louis in 1999 and Bishop Sheen in Nauvoo, Ill. She also attended services at Faith Temple for many years and other area churches in the Burlington area.

Jean was an avid fossil collector, loved fishing and playing the violin at church masses and visiting and playing for area nursing homes. While living in Mediapolis, she went to the Mediapolis Care Facility every Sunday to share the word of God and her love for music.

She sent monthly checks to India for over 40 years to help support those whom are less fortunate.

Jean resided at Oakview Care and Rehabilitation Center for the last two years of her life and was blessed with the tremendous support of her extended family.

She is survived by her daughter Ruth (Roger) Tapke, of Ellington, Connecticut; son-in-law, Patrick Mullahy of Burlington; four grandchildren, Lisa (Joel) Langley, Teresa (John) VanUtrecht, Sara Varga and Matthew (Sara) Mullahy; ten great grandchildren and many wonderful nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, daughter Kay Mullahy, one sister Arlene Futrell and four brothers Joseph Engelmeyer, Paul Engelmeyer, James Engelmeyer and John Engelmeyer.

The Mass of Christian Burial for Jean will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, Dec. 1 at St. John Catholic Church of Divine Mercy Parish. The Rev. Father Dominic Nguyen will be the celebrant. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.

A Christian Wake will be held at 5 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 30 at Lunning Chapel with the family to receive friends following the Christian Wake until 7 p.m.

Larry began working in the construction industry at 18 and quickly became a heavy equipment operator. He was a 60-year member of Local 649 Union, Peoria, Ill. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and mushroom hunting. He was a loving father, grandfather, brother, and friend to many.&nbsp;

Survivors include one daughter: Michelle (Jason) Gold of Dallas City; two grandchildren: Alex Gold and Emily (Dalton) Merry; nine siblings: Dennis McNaught of North Covina, Calif., Rose Davidson of Peoria, Ill., Sandy Penrod of Fort Madison, Curtis Clark of Sacramento, Calif., Dale Clark of Donnellson, Nick Clark, LaVeta Smith, LaVera Leebold and Sheryl Clark all of Dallas City, Ill.; a special friend: Sandra Schertz of Lomax, Ill. and several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews.&nbsp;

Linda Kay Klossing, 75, of West Burlington, died Saturday, Nov. 25, 2023, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in West Burlington. Born Oct. 11, 1948, she was the daughter of Horace “Bud” and Delma Morrison Bell.&nbsp;

Linda worked for Motorola and then Winegard, retiring in 2003. She enjoyed playing Bingo and was a big Iowa Hawkeye fan. She loved her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was of the protestant faith.

Survivors include her daughter Marta (Jerald) Frost of Graham, N.C.; three grandchildren Alona Yarnell of Graham, N.C., JerRon (Nyssa) Frost and Jaylen (Ashlee Duerksen) Frost both of Burlington; four great-grandchildren Sunny Yarnell, Teagen Yarnell, Madison Yarnell-Shaw and Jones Frost; brother Jerry (Nancy) Bell of Vicksburg, Miss.; niece Allison (Greg) Bennett of Germantown, Tenn.; nephew Matthew (Haley) Bell of Vicksburg, Miss. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband Clyde.

Kathy Kay Alter, 70, of Mount Pleasant, died on Sunday, Nov. 26, 2023, at Savannah Heights in Mount Pleasant.

Kathy was born Jan. 11, 1953, in Muscatine, the daughter of Robert and Gloria Vanzyle Buster. She married Scott Alter on July 7, 1973. Kathy lived in Mount Pleasant most of her life, except for five years in Muscatine where she enjoyed spending time with friends at Hershey Manor. 

Kathy was an avid Mount Pleasant Panther Athletic supporter, enjoyed listening to Iowa basketball and football on the radio, car rides, dinner out to eat and to the casino with family, going to Oakland Mills to watch the eagles, she loved cats, and she especially enjoyed time with her grandkids.&nbsp;

She is survived by two sons, Chase (Rita Hartman) Alter of Burlington and Rusty (Sashae) Alter of Mount Pleasant; three grandchildren, Jahmal, Jaiya, Maverick; her siblings Rick Buster and Pam Buster; cousins, and numerous nieces and nephews. Kathy was preceded in death by her parents and Scott Alter.&nbsp;

The family would like to thank the staff of Savannah Heights and EveryStep Hospice for the care they provided Kathy. She was a member of Sunnyside Baptist Church. Barbara enjoyed playing online games, shopping and going out to eat with friends. She loved reading, especially her Bible, going to church and attending Bible Study. Barbara will be fondly remembered for her generosity and willingness to help anyone with anything that she could.

Survivors include all of her friends and her church family.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

There will be no visitation or services. Barbara will be entombed at the columbarium in Aspen Grove.

Born April 5, 1937, in Burlington, he was the son of Kenneth H. and Jeanette Kiersey Murphy. On Nov. 21, 1964, he married Judith Rhodes.

Bob proudly served his country as a member of the United States Air Force from 1956 to 1962.

Bob was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Burlington. He enjoyed roller skating, where he met the love of his life. Bob always made a point to attend as many of his children’s and grandchildren’s musical and sporting events as possible. It was well known that his children and his grandchildren were everything to him. In addition to spending time with friends and family, you could find Bob farming or admiring a few Allis Chalmers tractors.

Survivors include his wife, Judith; children, Derrick Murphy of Burlington, Craig (Esther) Murphy of Burlington, and Robin (Daniel) Adami of Ariz.; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; siblings, Dennis Murphy of Burlington and Jennifer Murphy of Burlington; and several nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Mike and Albert. Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh Crematory.

Visitation with the family to receive friends will be 2 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 30, 2023, at Grace United Methodist Church.

Larry Edgar Alter, 89, of Burlington, died Friday, Nov. 17, 2023, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, Iowa. Born Dec. 8, 1933, in Burlington, he was the son of Clarence and Nellie Deeds Alter.

He was a 1952 graduate of Burlington High School and attended Burlington JuniorCollege and the University of Iowa. He served in the Navy during the Korean Conflict. After returning home, he moved to Chicago, Ill., and began working for Webcor Electronics. There, he learned about the Distant Early Warning (DEW) Line, which provided communications to the United States about potential Russian attacks on our country. While working on the DEW Line, he met a man who told him about California’s offer of a free college education, so he relocated to California to attend college. He returned to Burlington on summer break, where he met Marcia Willem. They were married on Sept. 23, 1962, in Downy, Calif. During a weekend visit with his cousin, Harold “Hank” Alter, Larry was offered a job in the electrical construction industry with C. F. Braun. That was his start in electrical construction, a field he worked in for many years. His first career positions were as a project engineer for two electrical construction projects at the Arco Refinery in Torrance, Calif., and a chemical plant in Moundsville, W.V. His project management career was exclusively in California, where he led construction projects, including the Mobil Oil Refinery coker and control house in Torrance, the Humble Refinery control house in Benicia, Westwood Plaza Tower in Los Angeles, Lawrence Welk Plaza Towers in Santa Monica, a water reclamation plant in Huntington Beach, the Crystal Cathedral in Garden Grove, the Anaheim Stadium Addition in Anaheim for the Rams and the Angels, Toyota’s National Headquarters in Torrance, Westminster Mall in Westminster, numerous NBC Studios projects in Burbank, many projects at Disneyland, including the Jungle Cruise, in Anaheim, various hospitals in Orange County, the Austin Company Offices in Irvine, the Pacific Bell Offices in San Ramon, Universal Studios 36-story high-rise in Universal City, and many others until his retirement in 1989. After retirement, Larry consulted and advised on many projects. 

While managing an ambitious career, he created expansive experiences for his family. After transforming a bus into a motorhome by hand, Larry and his family explored the western United States, finding unimaginable adventures. Closer to home, a cabin in the desert provided too many opportunities to list: fishing, hiking, motorcycle riding, and planting an orchard of walnut trees. Marcia and Larry traveled back to Iowa each summer, living in a motorhome while traveling. In 2005, they purchased their home in Burlington on the internet, sight unseen simply because it was on the bluff overlooking his beloved Mississippi. He attributed his good health and long life to its soul-filling river views. Always ready with his time, talent, and energy to lend help and guidance to family, friends, and strangers, Larry will be missed.

Larry is survived by his wife, Marcia Alter of Burlington; two children, Diane Alter Bernhardt of Park City, Utah and David (Colleen) Alter of Scottsdale, Ariz.; two grandchildren, Matthew David Bernhardt and Daniel Alter Bernhardt; three sisters, Beverly Fisher of Burlington, Linda Kay of Clear Lake, and Cheryl Herbers of Placentia, Calif. He was preceded in death by his parents, twin brother Leon Charles Alter in infancy, brother Jack Alter, and sister Dana Harris.

Teri L. Hummer, 66, of Burlington, died Monday, Nov. 20, 2023 at her home.

Born Aug. 19, 1957, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Kenneth and Bonnie Reid Rich Sr.

Teri graduated from Burlington High School with the class of 1975. On Jan. 12, 1985 she married Ronald Hummer in Burlington. Teri was of the Protestant Faith.

She worked for the Des Moines County Auditor’s office for 10 years. Teri volunteered with the Des Moines County Humane Society, she loved horseback riding and reading.

Survivors include her husband Ronald of Burlington; three children Blake (Lori) Umthun of Des Moines, Brooke (Manuel) Bermudez of California, Grant Hummer of Burlington; one step-son Jody (Yolanda) Hummer of Burlington; six grandchildren Taden, Landen, Anthony, Andrew, Natalie and Jefferey; two step-grandchildren Jeana and Damien; siblings Kenneth Rich Jr of Mt. Union, Marcia (Mort) Gaines of Fairfield, Kelly (Mark) Ripperger of Burlington, Tony (Liz) Rich of Burlington and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and step-son Shawn.

Visitation for Teri will be Saturday, Nov. 25 from 1 to 3 p.m. at Lunning Chapel. A memorial service and inurnment will be held at a later date.

A memorial has been established for the Des Moines County Humane Society.

Scott Donald Cooper, 62, of Burlington, died Monday, Nov. 20, 2023, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born January 24, 1961 in Frankfort, Ill., he was the son of Delmas Brock and Bonnie Jean Shults. He graduated from high school in Illinois where he loved to play basketball.

Scott met Zandra Cole in June of 2003 and they have enjoyed 20 wonderful years together.

He was a member of Local 91 Sheetmetal Workers and worked for Arnold’s Refrigeration for numerous years. Scott was a fan of the Chicago Bears, White Sox and Chicago Blackhawks. He enjoyed music and going to the casino. Scott liked to putter around the house and he loved his family.

Survivors include his loving wife Zandra Cole of Burlington; two daughters Candice Osslund of Burlington and Samantha Osslund of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; four grandchildren Lexie Latta, Trey Terpenning, Chloe Terpenning and Evan Wise; one great granddaughter Malani Black; his father Delmas Brock of London, Ky.; half-brother Dan Brock of Las Vegas, Nev., and several step-brothers and step-sisters.

He was preceded in death by his mother and stepfather, John Lissak.

The graveside service for Scott will be 2 p.m., Friday, Nov. 24, 2023 &nbsp;in Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be noon to 2 p.m. at Lunning Chapel prior to the service. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

Dorothy Eleanor Johnson was born April 14, 1930 in the family farmhouse near Dallas City, Ill.&nbsp; and died in the same farmhouse Nov. 19, 2023. She was one of 8 children born to Paul and Grace Markey. Her siblings Lester, Leon, Frank, John, Tony, and Mary preceded her in death, and her sister Katherine survives.&nbsp; 

She loved learning and excelled in the local public schools she attended.&nbsp; Dorothy went on to study at Western Illinois State College, received her teaching certificate, and taught four years in rural Illinois schoolhouses. Her school teaching career ended when God started sending her children.&nbsp; She met James R. "Jim" Johnson , at a square dance near Dallas City. They were married on Feb. 7, 1953, at Immaculate Conception Church in Carthage, Ill. Jim became a Catholic shortly after their marriage as a surprise ‘gift’ to his new bride.&nbsp; Jim died July 30, 2009, with&nbsp; Dorothy at his bedside.&nbsp; Dorothy attended Sacred Heart Church in Dallas City her entire life with her family. They had ten children; two died at birth; the remaining eight survived and had children of their own. She likes to refer to her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren as her treasures.

Dorothy’s&nbsp; great grandchildren:Abbey and Kate Van Middlesworth, Lena and Jonah Taylor, Rayna Tevis, Cora and Nathaniel Tevis, Owen, Addie, and Harper Brewer, Emma and Henry Mueller, Lauren Chalmers, and Jake Seymoure, Benjamin Bingham, Genevieve Johnson, many nieces, nephews, and step grandchildren.

It would have been more than enough work to be a farm wife and mother of eight, but Dorothy did not limit her love to her family. She taught the Catholic faith to other children, served on the Altar and Rosary Society, was a lector at Sacred Heart and served on the Durham election board.&nbsp; She performed many spiritual and corporal works of mercy including sending many letters of encouragement to those who needed them.&nbsp; She was not shy about entering into thorny issues with words given to her by the Holy Spirit.&nbsp; Many will miss those letters.&nbsp;

Jim, Dorothy, and their sons spent much time caring for the Gittings Mound Cemetery, her final resting place.&nbsp; After her sons left home, Dorothy continued to mow the cemetery by herself until Jim retired in 1990. Today her son David, and nephew Wayne Garrison continue the tradition.&nbsp; 

After Jim’s retirement, Dorothy and Jim were able to garden together, visit their children and grandchildren, make many wooden pieces of furniture from oak grown on the farm, and fish the creek and Mississippi River.&nbsp; They especially enjoyed a few trips to Mobridge, South Dakota to fish for walleye in Lake Oahe with their five sons.&nbsp;

However, those who know her are certain that her prayers will be even more effective now.&nbsp; A Rosary will be recited at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 26, 2023, at Banks &amp; Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City followed by a visitation with the family until 5 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 27, 2023, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Dallas City with Fr. Tony Trosley as celebrant. Burial will follow at Gittings Mound Cemetery, rural Dallas City.&nbsp; A memorial fund has been established for Gittings Mound Cemetery or the Sts. Peter &amp; Paul Catholic School.&nbsp;
