Malisa Scott, 48, of Burlington, died Saturday, October 8, 2022, in Burlington.

Born January 17, 1974, in Burlington, she was the daughter of David Wayne Bowman, Sherri Adams, and Harry Adams.

She graduated in 1993 from Union High School in Biggsville, Illinois then attended Dayton College.

Malisa worked at Winegard for three years as an assembler.&nbsp;

She enjoyed reading books and baking. She especially loved to spend time with her family and friends.&nbsp;

Survivors include her mother, Sherri Adams of Stronghurst, Ill.; father, Harry Willis Adams; two sons, Dakota Michael Willis Scott and Daniel Dean Scott of Burlington; daughter, Jazzmen Eileen Dameron of Burlington; four grandchildren, Jamie, Zaelynn, Kyeson, and Nakai; six brothers, Michael Adams (Cindy) of Fort Dodge, David&nbsp;Adams&nbsp;(Heather) of Davenport, Jason Adams of Burlington, Ruben Bowman, Sr. of Burlington, Justin Adams (Dena) of West Burlington, and Jesse Bowman of Davenport; four sisters, Tina Adams-Garcia (Rob) of Springfield, Mo., Julie Bowman-Andries (Matt) of Burlington, Anita Nichols of North Carolina, and Brandy Amber Adams (Billy Kerr) of Oquawka; and 21 nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her father, Dave Bowman, maternal grandparents, Earlene Bowman-Costilla and Richard Bowman, and paternal grandparents, Harold and Easther Bowman.&nbsp;

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh Crematory.

The memorial service for Malisa Scott will be 1 p.m. Friday, October 14, at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home with Rev. Nathaniel Bridges and Deacon Tim Robinson officiating.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Mark Thomas Green, 49, of Sandy, Utah, died Monday, October 3, 2022, in Sandy, Utah.

Mark was born September 10, 1973, in Seattle, Washington, to Thomas and Diana George Green.&nbsp; In 1992, he graduated from Naperville North High School and then attended the College of DuPage for one year.&nbsp; Mark served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Idaho Pocatello Mission (1993-1995).&nbsp; Afterward, he graduated from Brigham Young University earning a degree in accounting. He later obtained his CPA license. He started his professional career with Ernst &amp; Young as an accountant working his way up to Chief Financial Officer (CFO) for various companies.&nbsp;&nbsp;

At BYU he met Kelli Tregeagle, of Sandy, Utah, and they were married in the Salt Lake Utah Temple on August 14, 1997.&nbsp; Mark was a devoted father of daughter Lexi, now serving a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Canada Toronto Mission, and son Jacob, preparing to serve his mission beginning in December of this year in the Brazil Londrina Mission.

As a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Mark served in various callings.&nbsp; He served in the bishopric as ward clerk, the elders quorum as secretary, and in his ward Sunday school presidency. His favorite calling was teaching 10- and 11-year-old children in primary.

Mark was a gifted athlete, excelling in wrestling and golf. He was an avid sports fan.&nbsp; His favorite team was the Chicago Cubs.&nbsp; He was also a collector of baseball cards, hats, Star Wars memorabilia, oil paintings, and “lots of other stuff.”&nbsp; He enjoyed the great outdoors - fly fishing in Montana, snowmobiling with his son in Wyoming and Idaho, and hiking and riding ATVs with his family in southern Utah.

Mark is survived by his parents, Thomas and Diana George Green of Macomb, Ill.; former wife, Kelli Tregeagle Green, daughter, Lexi Green, and son, Jacob Thomas Green of Sandy, Utah; brother, Benjamin (Julia) Green of Macomb, Ill.; grandmother, June Bourn George Nollen of Burlington; three uncles, Lonnie (Marcia) Green of Lindale, Tex., Duane (Tonya) George of Burlington, Gregory (Resa) George of Stronghurst, Ill.; and several nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Loren “Bud” and Virginia Pepmeyer Green; maternal grandfather, Lewis George and step-grandfather, Verner “Red” Nollen.&nbsp; Mark loved his family and was loved by them. He will be greatly missed.

Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m., Friday, October 14.&nbsp;The funeral service for Mr. Green will be 11 a.m. Friday, October 14, both at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints located at 2000 West Adams Rd, Macomb, IL.  Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery, Burlington. He will be buried next to his paternal grandparents.  &nbsp;

The Graveside Committal Service for Mr. Green will be 2:30 p.m. Friday, October 14, at Aspen Grove Cemetery in Burlington. Those wishing to attend the service will meet at the Sunnyside Avenue gate prior to the service for a procession to the gravesite.&nbsp;

John Thornber Schulte, 87, formerly of Burlington, died Thursday, September 29, 2022, at Symphony of Wimberly in Texas.

Born February 18, 1935, in Burlington, he was the son of Walter C. and Gladys S Thornber Schulte.&nbsp;

He attended St Ambrose University and received his bachelor's degree in education. John then received his master's degree in Education and became a special education and resource teacher for the Burlington Area School District. He retired from teaching after 30 years of helping students.&nbsp;

He was a member of&nbsp; Divine Mercy Parish.&nbsp; Throughout his life he was involved in many organizations, some include; Concerned Residents as the former President, Park Boards, Burlington Good Earth, Parks, Organic Gardening Club, and a supporter of the Parks and Street Departments.&nbsp;

Survivors include cousin, Theresa (Robert) Clark of Wimberley, Tex., and Brad (Jean) Schulte of Ft Madison; his extended family members and the many friends he had made over the years.&nbsp;

The Funeral Mass of the Resurrection for Mr. Schulte will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, October 18, at Divine Mercy Parish-St. John the Baptist Catholic Church with Very Rev. Father Marty Goetz as the Celebrant.&nbsp; Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery.&nbsp; A time of food and fellowship will be held at St. John's cafeteria following burial.

A memorial has been established for Notre Dame High School.

Laverne Gary Dowell, 82, of Burlington, died Saturday, October 8, 2022, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in West Burlington.

Gary was born May 2, 1940, in Sperry, Iowa, the son of Leon and Lois Granaman Dowell.

Gary grew up on a farm in Southeast Iowa and attended Sperry High School. He was a route sales representative for Mid Continent Bottlers for several years before becoming a route sales rep with Continental Baking Company/Wonder Bread. He worked for Wonder Bread for 25 years before retiring at age 62.

In his spare time and retirement, Gary loved being outdoors, and spending time hunting and fishing. He liked gardening and took immense pride in his many flowers and the hummingbirds he fed. He took immaculate care of his yard and was awarded the Burlington Realtors Pride in Property Award. His Christmas light displays were also well-known in the neighborhood. He liked to play keno and visit with his friends at Jerry’s, where he was a regular for breakfast.

He was a devoted son, caring for his mother for many years. He was also a devoted father.&nbsp;

Survivors include his three children: Todd Dowell (Janice), of Independence, Mo.; Dawn Thurman (Kim), of North Liberty.; and Wendi Flatt (Scott), of Middletown; five grandchildren: Teara Dowell of Burlington, Savannah Dowell of Mediapolis, Caleb Thurman of North Liberty, Todd Stewart of Dallas, Tex., and Abby Enhörning of Gothenburg, Sweden, along with seven great-grandchildren. He is also survived by one brother, Larry Dowell, and his wife, Dorothy, of Lakewood, Ill.&nbsp;

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Monte Dowell.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh Crematory.&nbsp;

Honoring Gary’s wishes, there will be no visitation or services.&nbsp;

Memorials may be directed to the Des Moines County Humane Society.

Laverne Gary Dowell

Wayne Newell Johnson, 82, of Burlington, died Sunday, October 2, 2022, after battling a long illness.

Born April 12, 1940, in Burlington, he was the son of Warren and Rayne &nbsp;Stevenson Johnson.&nbsp; On April 8, 1961, he married his best friend and love of his life, Judith Ann Garnant in Burlington.

Wayne was a gifted and talented craftsman.&nbsp; He loved and supported his growing family as first an apprentice, then a tool and die maker at the Winegard Company, retired after decades of loyal and faithful service, and where he made some very good friends.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Wayne was a member of SS Mary and Patrick’s Catholic Church, where he attended faithfully until he could no longer do so.&nbsp; He loved the outdoors and treated Judy and the kids to decades of endless fun boating, camping, swimming, skiing, and fishing on the Mississippi River. In addition to these activities, Wayne enjoyed tending to his garden, feeding the birds and fighting with the squirrels, watching the Iowa Hawkeyes, and keeping up with all of his kids’ favorite sports teams and their local weather. He was an avid coin collector, an amazing woodworker who loved making beautiful keepsakes for his family, and an all-around simple yet gentle soul who loved telling jokes, drinking a PBR, and sharing laughter and stories. Above all, he loved and valued his family which continued to grow and produce grandchildren and great-grandchildren of whom he was so proud. When Wayne lost Judy, he never quite recovered, but he did his best to go on and remain the loving patriarch of his family.

Wayne is survived by three daughters, Joni (Mitch) Smith of Big Canoe, Ga., Kimberly (Carlos) Capdevila of Burlington, and Amy (Grant) Bonta of Belleville, Ill.; three sons Jeff (Morgan) Johnson of Overland Park, Kan., Rick (Kelly) Johnson of Marion, and Randy (Debbie) Johnson of Cedar Rapids. 19 grandchildren, Jami (Shaun), Lindsey, Nicholas, Kelsey (Clinton), Brayden, Blake, Courtney (Morgan), Kyla (Arron), Payton, Elle, Nicole (Blake), Ryan, Jordan (Bridgette), Meagan (Colten), Caitlyn, Carter, Chandler, Camden, and Ethan. Ten great-grandchildren, Ryan, Chloe, Logan, Caden, Mason, Raylin, Alyvia, Oliver, Charlotte, and Leo. Wayne also had one great-grandchild on the way (Kelsey and Clinton’s baby boy); brother Wally (Becky) Johnson of Amana, sisters-in-law Laurie Johnson, Clara Johnson, and Cheri (Joe) Stewart, several dear nieces and nephews, and special friends Phil and Cynthia.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Wayne’s story can’t possibly be told without relating the love of music that he instilled in his six children. One of his favorite phrases was “music makes the world go round”. His children were raised on music, from listening to the ’50s around the campfire to hearing Elvis Presley blaring from the living room after a night out with Mom, to Christmas music and requests made by Dad to have his kids sing and “act out” our silly 70’s song and dance numbers. Music was always a special thread that Dad wove through us, and it connected us to him and Mom in ways that are joyfully impossible to describe.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The leader of the band was tired, and his eyes had grown so old…but his blood runs through our instruments, and his song is in our souls. Our lives have been a poor attempt to imitate the man….We are just the living legacy to our leader of the band.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Prugh Funeral Service is in care of arrangements.&nbsp; Cremation has been entrusted to Prugh Crematory.&nbsp;

Visitation will be from noon until 7 p.m. with the family to receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, October 14, 2022, at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home in Burlington.

The memorial service for Mr. Johnson will be 10 a.m. Saturday, October 15, at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home in Burlington. with Rev. James Flattery officiating.&nbsp; Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery.&nbsp;&nbsp;

A Celebration of Life will be held at the Buffalo Tavern in Burlington following the burial.

His children were raised on music, from listening to the ’50s around the campfire to hearing Elvis Presley blaring from the living room after a night out with Mom, to Christmas music and requests made by Dad to have his kids sing and “act out” our silly 70’s song and dance numbers. Music was always a special thread that Dad wove through us, and it connected us to him and Mom in ways that are joyfully impossible to describe.&nbsp;&nbsp;The leader of the band was tired, and his eyes had grown so old…but his blood runs through our instruments, and his song is in our souls. Lorene Rose Ellerhoff, 74, of Middletown, died on Wednesday, October 5, 2022, at Hospice House, in West Burlington. Born in Fort Madison, on September 17, 1948, Lorene was the youngest child of William and Loretta Hellweg Jacobsmeier.

She was a 1966 graduate of Aquinas High School. She earned an Associate of Arts degree from Southeastern Community College in 1968 despite meeting and becoming smitten with the love of her life, Ron Ellerhoff, on her very first day of classes. They married one year later on August 19, 1967. They had three children; Jena (Mahmoud Ahmed) Ellerhoff of Middletown, Lea (Colin) McCormick of Mt. Pleasant, and Jared Ellerhoff of Marion.

She held jobs at Iowa Wesleyan College in the mailroom and telephone switchboard, as a Realtor, and as Secretary/Bookkeeper for the City of Burlington’s Planning Department before beginning her 25-year stint as the Director of the Des Moines County Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP). Later, she spent 12 years as the Activity Director at Prairie Ridge Care Center before retiring. Over the years, she was involved with numerous organizations, especially as part of her RSVP Director duties.

Faith was also very important to Lorene. She attended St. Mary’s Catholic Church in West Burlington and Middletown Presbyterian Church for many years. Later, she attended West Burlington United Methodist Church, and most recently, Burlington’s First Congregational Church. She also deeply appreciated time with family and friends.

Lorene had a profound love of music. She directed the St. Mary’s Singers (later The New Spirit Singers) choir. She was the founder and Director of the Silver Singers choir, of which she was later a member. Additionally, she directed or sang in West Burlington United Methodist and St. Alphonsus Catholic Church choirs in recent years.

She loved singing, dancing, watching and performing musical theatre, playing guitar and piano, and watching movies, especially classical ones with plenty of romance or adventure. She was a stickler for correct grammar as she loved the English language, but also loved puns. She was known to handwrite flowery heartfelt letters to her friends and loved ones. She treasured her cat, Freddie. She enjoyed reading romance novels, baking, flowers, knitting, needlepoint, and latch hook, listening to music, playing cards, vacationing with Ron/family, and genealogy.

Lorene was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, parents, and brothers Wendell, Justin, and Martin (Donna) Jacobsmeier. 

She is survived by her children, seven grandchildren (Braden Glasgow; Nicholas, Katie, Natalie, and Olivia McCormick; and Odyn and Chloe Ellerhoff), and great-grandchild (Nova Glasgow); sisters Luanne (Jim) Pruett, Lillian (Stanley) Helling, and Laura Hyatt, all of Fort Madison; sisters-in-law Elyce Riney of Middletown and Becky Davis of Burlington; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews in addition to many beloved friends.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, October 17 at First Congregational Church, 313 North Fourth Street, Burlington, with Pastors Jim Francisco and Dan Baker co-officiating.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. on Sunday, October 16 at Lunning Chapel where the family will receive friends.

In lieu of flowers, Lorene’s family requests memorial gifts be given toward a yet undesignated cause that was close to Lorene’s heart.

According to her wishes, cremation after the service has been accorded and entrusted to the care of Lunning Chapel. Private inurnment will be held later in Middletown Cemetery.

Lorene Rose Ellerhoff

Keith L. Andre, 80, of Burlington, died Tuesday, October 4, 2022, at his home.

Born July 11, 1942, in Moline, Illinois, he was the son of George and Charlotte Partlow Andre. He served in the Marines during the invasion of Bay of Pigs.

He married Sandy Krell on August 5, 1985, in Burlington. He worked as a logger in California, a commercial fisherman and served with ADDS and Woodlands Treatment Center. He previously served on the YMCA Camp Board of Directors.

Keith was an avid outdoorsman. He loved all types of hunting and of course fishing. He loved helping people, and for many years attended Alcoholics Anonymous and sponsored many people. In his younger years, he was a bull rider, and rode in the Marine Rodeo.

He is survived by his wife; Sandy Krell-Andre of Burlington; five children; Terri Goodwin of Michigan, Tammy Bush of Nevada, Chris Sasfy-Dean (Matt) of Illinois and Tobin (Mollie) Krell and Zach Andre both of Burlington; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and one brother, Gary Andre of Texas.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother Buster Andre.

A Celebration of Life will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. October 16 at the Homestead 1839, 701 West Agency St., West Burlington.

According to his wishes, cremation has been accorded and entrusted to the care of Lunning Chapel.

Wayne LeRoy Crawley, 72, of Burlington, died Wednesday, October 5, 2022, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in West Burlington.&nbsp;

Born January 4, 1950, in Ottumwa, he was the son of Gilbert and Anna Annis Crawley. On January 9, 1970, he married Debra Sue Keever in Biggsville Church.&nbsp;

He worked in Sanitation and the Parks Department for the City of Burlington over 28 years.

Wayne was a backyard mechanic and known to race his car down Jefferson street in the evening when he was younger. He enjoyed watching wrestling and was very ornery. He loved to give people a hard time.&nbsp;

Survivors include his wife, Deb of Burlington; son, Steven (LenRose) Crawley; nine grandchildren; great-grandchildren; four siblings, Gil Crawley of Tenn., Roy Crawley of Tex., Donna Crawley and Vickie Ruby both of Iowa.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Scott Crawley, brother, Ed Crawley, grandparents, and great-grandparents.&nbsp;

Heather Helena King Bennett, was called home unexpectedly Sunday September 4, 2022 where she was welcomed by her father, Rick King and mother, Debra Altimus. Everyone was shocked because this is the first time she was ever early to anything.&nbsp;

Heather was born May 31, 1986 in Denver, Colo. Four years later, her small family moved to Rapid City, South Dakota, where she gained a sister, Ashley King, and about a year later a brother, RJ King. A few years later they moved to Burlington, Iowa which they called home for quite a few years. She treasured that in 2013, she became an aunt, and was blessed with a nephew, Liam Brobston.&nbsp; Heather met the love of her life and moved back to Denver, Colorado where on September 28, 2018, she married Jeffrey Bennett. They resided in Aurora, Colorado until the day God took her home.&nbsp;

A beloved sister, wife, and friend she was also a devoted Denver Broncos fan and a dedicated animal lover, especially bulldogs. Her kind and gentle soul enriched all who met her, she will be missed dearly by many.&nbsp;

Keith Charles Harte, 79, of Burlington, died Monday, October 3, 2022, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born March 6, 1943, in Seattle, Wash., he was the son of Charles A. and Evelyn Davies Harte. On May 19, 1978, he married Jeanne Ebert in Bakersfield, Calif..&nbsp;

Keith worked as a Union Carpenter for 50 years.&nbsp;

He was an U.S. Air Force Veteran, serving from January 10, 1963 until January 9, 1967.

Keith was a former member of the Moose Lodge. Fishing was Keith's all time favorite activity. He also enjoyed gambling and going to yard sales and thrift stores. He was a bargain hunter, always looking for a great deal.&nbsp;

Survivors include his wife, Jeanne Harte of Burlington; two daughters, Jenifer (Scott) Moore of Guadalupe, Calif. and Amanda (Mark) Luster of Burlington; six grandchildren, Alexandria, Krystyn, and Mytchal (Justine) Moore, Michayla Harte, Faith and Hunter Luster; three great-grandchildren, Remi Jo, Alykzander Moore and Mila Luster.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters.&nbsp;

She was born September 30, 1948 in Ft. Madison, Iowa, the daughter of Frederick W. “Fritz”and Martha Votzmeier Timmermann. On January 23, 1998 she married Dennis L. Parmeter in Burlington.

Mary graduated from Aquinas High School in Ft. Madison and did medical office work for Corp Medical Services and Health West Clinic retiring in 2013. She enjoyed bowling, being with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Mary especially loved her dog, Lilly.

Survivors include her husband, Dennis; two daughters, Sherry Harris and Lori Henderson of Burlington; her grandchildren, Gregory Hester, Ashley Johnston, Mikayla Binder, Stone Graham, Sandra Graham, and Lucas Henderson; great grandchildren, JaMari, JaVoni, Ethan, Brionna, Julian Jr, and Apollo; two brothers, Paul and David Timmermann of Ft. Madison; her Stepmother Doris “Red” Timmermann of Burlington; and her beloved dog Lilly.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents.

Esther Ruth Rechkemmer, 85, of Burlington, Iowa, died Saturday, October 1, 2022 at her home.

She was born October 12, 1936 in New Boston, Illinois to Edward Ernest and Jessie Ruth Shotwell Shoemaker. Esther married Melvin Rechkemmer on November 19, 1955 in Aledo, Illinois. They shared almost 47 years together working hard and enjoying a good life together. They enjoyed their families, playing games in the yard or at the kitchen table with cards. They followed their kids and grandkids activities.

They were members of the First Presbyterian Church in Burlington along with being active members of the Moose Lodge. Esther worked at Restaurants for many years and for Mel’s Mother at “Mable’s Café” in Oakville. She also worked at the basket factory and in her later years at a bakery.

Esther enjoyed taking care of her family, she liked to cook and bake, loved to read, tend to her flowers and put-up food out of her garden. She loved watching the river flow by, the Chicago Cubs and the Iowa Hawkeye basketball team.

She lost Melvin in 2002 and then later met Larry Kiesel along with his son Doug Kiesel. They had fifteen years together and were active members of the Moose Lodge, having and attending block parties and enjoying music together. Larry took care of Esther until her last days.

Esther is survived by one brother; Ernie (Margo) Shoemaker, Keithsburg, Ill.; one son Tony (Barb) Rechkemmer, Coralville; four daughters, Terry (Terry) Grim, Wapello, Tammy (Steve) Hirst, Mt. Pleasant, Debbie (Stan) Swank, Aledo, Ill., and Cindy Nees of Monmouth, Ill.; two step children, Curt (Jill) Rechkemmer, Cedar Falls, Denise Newcomb, Solon; several grandchildren, numerous great grandchildren, great great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Mel, one sister Janice Brown, three brothers Bob, John, and Harry Shoemaker; one daughter Mary Young, one grandson Jeremy, one granddaughter, Kim, and great grandson Kayzen Ecklund.

The family will receive friends beginning at 10 a.m. Friday, October 7, 2022, at Lunning Chapel with the memorial funeral service directly following at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Dean Graber officiating. Private family inurnment will take place in Edwards Cemetery rural Oakville at a later date.

Memorials have been established for the Des Moines County Humane Society and the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice.

 </figure>Esther Ruth Rechkemmer, 85, of Burlington, Iowa, died Saturday, October 1, 2022 at her home.She was born October 12, 1936 in New Boston, Illinois to Edward Ernest and Jessie Ruth Shotwell Shoemaker. Esther married Melvin Rechkemmer on November 19, 1955 in Aledo, Illinois. They shared almost 47 years together working hard and enjoying a good life together. They enjoyed their families, playing games in the yard or at the kitchen table with cards. They followed their kids and grandkids activities.They were members of the First Presbyterian Church in Burlington along with being active members of the Moose Lodge. Esther worked at Restaurants for many years and for Mel’s Mother at “Mable’s Café” in Oakville. She also worked at the basket factory and in her later years at a bakery.Esther enjoyed taking care of her family, she liked to cook and bake, loved to read, tend to her flowers and put-up food out of her garden. She loved watching the river flow by, the Chicago Cubs and the Iowa Hawkeye basketball team.She lost Melvin in 2002 and then later met Larry Kiesel along with his son Doug Kiesel. They had fifteen years together and were active members of the Moose Lodge, having and attending block parties and enjoying music together. Dannie Ray Sargent, 71, of Burlington, died Sunday, October 2, 2022, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in West Burlington.

Born November 22, 1950, in LaHarpe, Illinois, he was the son of Kenneth Sargent and Don “Bo” and Vera Jean Schoch Ikerd.

He was a 1968 graduate of Carthage High School and served in the Army during the Vietnam War.

He married Pam Wells, they later divorced. He then married Becky Jean Givans, she died June 14, 2009.

Dannie worked for Burlington Northern Railroad for 24 years.

He loved crossword puzzles, watching westerns and gameshows and listening to classic rock. He was very sociable, yet ornery, and enjoyed making his rounds, teasing people. He was kind, selfless, and had the biggest heart.

He is survived by his three children; Shane Sargent of Rushville, Ill., Jesse Sargent and Samantha Sargent both of Burlington; five grandchildren, Emily, Kadira, Draven, Ramona and Orion; siblings, Connie Cutts, Ricky Sargent, Kendall Sargent, Debbie Bundy, Brent Ikerd and Scott Ikerd and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his stepfather, and two sisters, Bonnie Mays and Peggy Sargent.

A celebration of life will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, October 8 at Lunning Chapel. Inurnment will be held at a later date in Aspen Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, October 7 at Lunning Chapel where the family will receive friends.

Charlotte Ilene Fritz, 83, of Burlington, died Sunday, October 2, 2022 at her home.

Born September 6, 1939 in Keosauqua, she was the daughter of Harrison “Dutch” and Hazel Williams Varvel.

She graduated in 1957 from Sperry High School and married Claire A. Fritz on March 18, 1972 in Burlington. Charlotte was a Jehovah’s Witness.

Charlotte cleaned house, worked at Midwest Biscuit and also worked for Dr Roewe’s oral surgery office. She enjoyed word search puzzles, traveling with Claire and family, including trips to Europe, Hawaii and throughout the United States. Charlotte was an avid reader, enjoyed tea parties and going for coffee and garage sales.

Survivors include her husband, Claire; children Jack Butcher, Carl Johnson, Jan Tolmasoff, Lisa Forristall, Randy Fritz, Jennifer Fritz, Amy Bourbon, and Jamie Fritz; 14 grandchildren and five great grandchildren; brothers and sisters Ray Dean Varvel, Sharon Allsup, Cheryl Gibson, Donna Gerdner and Rick Varvel.

Charlotte was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Howard Varvel.

The funeral service for Charlotte will be Friday, October 7, 2022 at 2 p.m. at Lunning Chapel with Mr. Brent Nelson officiating. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery in West Burlington. Visitation will be Thursday, October 6, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Lunning Chapel.

Dennis Eugene Ohlmutz, 79, of Burlington, died Wednesday, September 28, 2022, at the Azria Health Prairie Ridge in Mediapolis.

Born April 6, 1943, in Burlington, he was the son of Henry Charles and Helen Mae Gladman Ohlmutz. On March 19, 1982, he married Sherry Ann Cheeley in Burlington, Iowa. She died on April 8, 2019.

He was a U.S. Army Veteran, serving from 1964 until 1968. Dennis worked for Chittenden &amp; Eastman as a computer operator and later became a programmer.

He enjoyed watching TV, building and working on computers, and writing software.

Survivors include two daughters, Shawna (Tim) Brown of Burlington and Shannon (Darren) Daily of Fort Madison; son, Tom (Kathy) Ohlmutz of St. Louis, Mo.; grandson, Hunter McBride of Burlington; and sister, Marilyn Gerth of Arizona City, Ariz.

Besides his wife of 37 years, he was preceded in death by his parents, brother, David Richard Ohlmutz and sister, Susan Keith.

She born on June 4, 2015, to parents Billy and Elise Meyers of Des Moines, Iowa.

Elowyn is cherished by those who knew her. She loved to snuggle, be warm, and be outside with her family. Her gentle attention and warm affection for the ones she loved were felt deeply. Each day of Elowyn’s life was a gift of gracious joy. Her family and friends knew the joy of her steady presence.

Donald Lee Reeder, 90, of Burlington, died Monday, September 26, 2022, at the Northcrest Community retirement center in Ames.

Born March 21, 1932, in Keokuk, he was the son of Leslie R. and Evangeline Youngmeyer Reeder. On December 30, 1951, he married Lerita Pence in Lomax, Ill. He passed away on May 12, 2000.

In 1950, he graduated from La Harpe High School, then attended Monmouth College.

Donald worked for Northwestern Bell telephone companies for over 40 years, with long service as President of Local #7181 of the Communications Workers of America. After his retirement, he worked as a transportation officer for the Des Moines County Sheriff's Department. He was a member of the Burlington Police Reserves and the Eagles club.

He enjoyed restoring the family's 1954 Ford ¾-ton pickup and two early Case tractors, proudly driving them in shows in Southeast Iowa and West Central Illinois. He was a lifelong fan of the Illinois State Fair. Donald and Lerita together served for many years as scout boat pilots for MADRAC's annual Dubuque to Burlington canoe trip. A special passion was decades of taking his children and grandchildren to Goodrich Lake in Minnesota. His children, grandchildren, and great-grand-children were the delights of his life.

Survivors include two daughters, Lori J. (Monte) Asbury of Washington, Ia. and Shari J. Albee of Ames; son, Philip L. Reeder of Burlington; six grandchildren, Hannah J. (Jimmie) Horton, Benjamin P. Asbury, Lucas L. Asbury, Michael J. Albee, Matthew D. (Lindsay) Albee and Megan J. (Zachary) Miles; six great-grandchildren, Colten, Ellie, Sam, Jasper, Clara, Zorion, and one great-grandson on the way; three half great-grandchildren, Tucker, Nikole, and Kayden; brother, Carl Reeder of Ankeny; and two sisters, Judy (Doug) Mabry of Huntsville, Ala. and Linda Sadler of Burlington.

Born July 14, 1951, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Harry and Polina Rokitiauska Sereda. On August 24, 1974, she married Gary Lee Duckstein at the West Avenue Baptist Church in Burlington, Iowa.&nbsp;

Val graduated from Burlington Community High School in 1970.&nbsp;

She was a member of the Gold Wings Road Riders. Val enjoyed arts and crafts, going to flea markets, and watching game shows. She cherished spending time with her family, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.&nbsp;

Survivors include her husband of 48 years, Gary of Burlington; daughter, Tammy (Ralph) Meyer of Burlington; two grandchildren, Zachary (Nicolle) Determan of Nebraska, Grant (Alyssa) Jones of Burlington; and one great-grandchild, Brielle Determan; brothers, Stan (Lorraine) Sereda of Spokane, Wash., Vic (Lila) Sereda, Jim Sereda and Jon (Lily) Sereda all of Burlington; sister, Bonnie (Jack) Warnock of Liberty, Mo.; and several nieces and nephews.

Valentina Duckstein

Derek Doss Massner, 54, of Mediapolis, died Wednesday, September 21, 2022 at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in West Burlington, surrounded by his most amazing family.

Born, January 22, 1968, he was the son of Adolphus “Doss” and Bertha Wagenbach Massner. He was of the Christian Faith

Derek graduated from Mediapolis High School in 1986 and Indian Hills Community College with a degree in diesel mechanics.

On September 4, 2010, he married Alissa Drebenstedt, the love of his life, at Fairview Church.

Derek was an operator for River Valley Co-op since 1993. He loved his job and his co-workers.

Derek enjoyed fishing, traveling with Alissa, gardening, and always tried to make sure everyone was happy. His children were his pride and joy, he loved his family, and encouraged family gatherings so everyone could be together.

Survivors include his wife Alissa of Mediapolis; mother Bertha Massner of Mediapolis; children Paige (JD) Pennington of Wapello, Kristen (Ryan) Pennington of Frankfort, Ill., Adam (Daniela) Massner of Savannah, Ga., Lane (Claire) Schnedler of Mediapolis, Reese Campbell of Mediapolis, Nolan Massner of Mediapolis; granddaughter Addelynn Gustison of Wapello; brothers David (Joni) Massner and Doran (Stacy) Massner of Mediapolis; sisters Mara (Curtis) Orr, Dana (AJ) Kuisle and Megan Massner all of Mediapolis; sister-in-law Amy (Rusty) Whitaker; brother-in-law Gene (Laura) Drebenstedt; aunts, uncles and many nieces and nephews.

 </figure>Derek Doss Massner, 54, of Mediapolis, died Wednesday, September 21, 2022 at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in West Burlington, surrounded by his most amazing family.Born, January 22, 1968, he was the son of Adolphus “Doss” and Bertha Wagenbach Massner. He was of the Christian FaithDerek graduated from Mediapolis High School in 1986 and Indian Hills Community College with a degree in diesel mechanics.On September 4, 2010, he married Alissa Drebenstedt, the love of his life, at Fairview Church.Derek was an operator for River Valley Co-op since 1993. He loved his job and his co-workers.Derek enjoyed fishing, traveling with Alissa, gardening, and always tried to make sure everyone was happy. His children were his pride and joy, he loved his family, and encouraged family gatherings so everyone could be together.Survivors include his wife Alissa of Mediapolis; mother Bertha Massner of Mediapolis; children Paige (JD) Pennington of Wapello, Kristen (Ryan) Pennington of Frankfort, Ill., Adam (Daniela) Massner of Savannah, Ga., Lane (Claire) Schnedler of Mediapolis, Reese Campbell of Mediapolis, Nolan Massner of Mediapolis; granddaughter Addelynn Gustison of Wapello; brothers David (Joni) Massner and Doran (Stacy) Massner of Mediapolis; sisters Mara (Curtis) Orr, Dana (AJ) Kuisle and Megan Massner all of Mediapolis; sister-in-law Amy (Rusty) Whitaker; brother-in-law Gene (Laura) Drebenstedt; aunts, uncles and many nieces and nephews.He was preceded in death by his father, son Kyler Schnedler, sister Marlys Massner, and maternal and paternal grandparents.The funeral service for Derek will be Monday, September 26th at 10:30 a.m. at Harmony Bible Church in Burlington. Interment will be in the Old Stone Cemetery in rural Sperry. Visitation will be Sunday, September 25th from 3 to 6 p.m. at Lunning Chapel where the family will receive friends.Memorials have been established for the Mediapolis Ambulance Service and Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House.
