Jennie Lee Gustison, 88, of Oakville, died July 10, 2024. She was born on October 8, 1935, in Northfield, to Ross and Henrietta Hennings Wilson. Jennie was a lifelong resident of the Oakville area. She had fond memories as a young girl of ice skating, roller skating, singing, and having many get-togethers with her girlfriends. Jennie graduated from Oakville High School in 1954.

On New Year’s Eve of 1954, Jennie married the love of her life and husband of nearly 70 years, Paul Gustison. Together they farmed in rural Wapello and Oakville for 58 years, from 1954 to 2012. She was the model farm wife and homemaker, working alongside Paul to plant and harvest crops, bale hay, and raise free-range hogs and cattle. She also worked outside the home at Thatcher’s, Tri-State Envelope Factory, and the Hopewellian Mounds at Toolesboro where she shared her love of Louisa County History.

Jennie’s family meant the world to her. She and Paul raised three daughters who they cherished dearly: Cynthia Jo, Robin Reneé, and Kimberly Dawn. Jennie was a fun-loving grandmother and enjoyed creating memories and telling stories to her four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Christmas, sledding, summer picnics, and weenie roasts were some of the many family memories out at the farm. In addition to raising her family, taking care of the home, and farming, Jennie enjoyed many hobbies. She was well-known for her home-cooked meals. She enjoyed mowing and gardening, fishing and mushroom hunting, and family genealogy. Jennie and Paul enjoyed socializing with their many friends. She was a member of the Good Will Club. In her later years, Jennie became a whiz with technology, watching cooking videos on her iPad and connecting with classmates on Facebook. Jennie also had several pets throughout her lifetime that she loved dearly. She loved the Lord and was a member of the Oakville Methodist Church.

Those left to remember and love Jennie include her love of nearly 70 years Paul, three daughters Cyndie (Danny) Evans of Muscatine, Robin (Steve) Smith of Wapello, and Kimberly (Eddie) Fisher of Wapello; four grandchildren: Betsy (Marty) Duffy, Andy (Megan) Evans, Lorin Fisher, and Lydia Fisher; four great-grandchildren: Lily, Hank, Danny, and Grace; and her brother Warren (Patsy) Wilson of New London (a veteran of the Cuban Missile Crisis).

Jennie will be welcomed to Heaven by her parents; a son in infancy; and her brothers (all World War II veterans) Valdo “Sonny” Alderson, Louis “Buddy” Alderson (a prisoner of war), and Norville “Tom” Alderson.&nbsp;

As Jennie entered Heaven, she was serenaded by a special rendition of “Welcome to My World” by Eddie Arnold and Jim Reeves. “Lay Your Head on My Pillow,” is the special song for Paul to remember Jennie until he joins her in Heaven.

Family and friends may visit at Prugh Funeral Service, 3940 Division Street, on Monday, July 15 from 9 to 10:30 a.m.

Jennie will be laid to rest at Aspen Grove Cemetery in Burlington. Graveside services will be held on Monday, July 15 at 11 a.m.&nbsp;

James A. “Jim” Brown, 74, of Burlington, died Tuesday, July 9, 2024, at his home. Born February 18, 1950, in Burlington, he was the son of Virrel and Exxa Lou “Peggy” Brown.

He was a U.S. Navy Veteran and worked for ISC for many years. He was of the Methodist faith.

Jim’s passion was fishing. He enjoyed playing pool and cards.

He is survived by his son, Jeffrey Brown; siblings, David Brown, Jerry Brown, Jane Armstrong, Lou Whitehair; sister-in-law, Rosemary Brown and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Dan Brown and step-father Forrest Hunt.

The graveside service and inurnment with military honors for Mr. Brown will be 2 p.m. Saturday, July 20 in Elmwood Cemetery, Morning Sun.

Cremation has been accorded and entrusted to the care of Lunning Chapel.

Caroline Rose Abbott, 1, of Burlington, died Wednesday, July 10, 2024, at her home in Burlington.

Born March 22, 2023, in West Burlington, she was the daughter of Aaron and Alyssa Dixon Abbott.&nbsp;

Caroline was the happiest child. She always had a smile on her face and her big, blue eyes spread joy wherever she was. She loved to talk and would say "Hi" to everyone she saw. Caroline loved to play, especially with her sister, Everlee. She was not a picky eater, as many children are, but instead liked trying new things. She enjoyed watching "Bluey" and loved music and dancing. She loved all of her animals very much and would cuddle with them often.

Survivors include her parents; one sister, Everlee Abbott of Burlington; paternal grandparents, Theresa and James Abbott of Burlington; maternal grandparents, Cathy Dixon, and Miles (Jennifer) Dixon; great-grandmother, O'Kemm Dixon; two aunts, Tara (Corbin) Folsom and Mallorie (Jesse) Gates; and cousins, Moira Gates, Mera Gates, and Mavis Gates.

She was preceded in death by her paternal great-grandparents, Michael and Margaret McCreight, James Abbott Sr., and Rosemarie Abbott-See; and maternal great-grandparents, Donald Dixon and Della (Francis) Laue.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh Crematory.

David Robert Schwenker, 42, passed away Wednesday, July 10, 2024, at Mercy Medical Hospital in Des Moines.

David was born March 5, 1982, to Kenneth “Ken” and Elizabeth “Beth” Callaway Schwenker in Burlington. He was a 2000 graduate of Burlington High School and graduated from Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa, earning his Bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering. He moved to Des Moines where he began his career with IMT Insurance Company.

David enjoyed life. He played for many years in several adult hockey leagues in Central Iowa, both ice and roller hockey. He was a familiar face at both the Des Moines Buccaneers and Iowa Wild games as a season ticket holder to both teams.

David inherited a love of working with tools and wood from his father and maternal grandfather. He built a shed for his backyard, a coffee table and liked to carve. He enjoyed working on his own home. He also had an amazing talent at putting together jigsaw puzzles. David liked to cook, kept a salt water fish tank, plants and a garden. He seemed naturally good at anything he attempted.

He loved the outdoors and went on many camping and hiking trips, he summited mountains and loved to snowboard.

He is survived by his sister; Katherine “Kathy” Schwenker; many aunts, uncles and cousins and his wife Barbara Becker.

He was preceded in death by his parents, maternal grandparents Lester and Vera Callaway and paternal grandparents Robert and Bernice Schwenker.

Visitation will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 16 at Lunning Chapel. Burial will be held in Aspen Grove Cemetery at 12 p.m. Wednesday, July 17.

LaVon Pfadenhauer, 91, of Burlington, died Friday, July 12, 2024, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born August 30, 1933, in Afton, Iowa, she was number 11 of 16 children born to Bert and Ava Mae Mills Dady. She was proud of the fact that she obtained her G.E.D. at the age of 40. LaVon worked for National Research, Midwest Biscuit (now Shearers) and Campbell Chain. She was a long-time caregiver, babysitting for many children, and took care of many elderly in their homes.

She attended First Church of the Nazarene.

She was an avid collector of dolls and was famous for her pies and fried chicken. She was the best to everyone. Anyone she met; she touched their lives.

She is survived by her three daughters; Pamela Marie (William) Gulick, Ruth Ann Fortune and Tina Louise Kelley (Salvador Gallegos); seven grandchildren, Jamie Gulick, Ashley (Steve) Setterburg, Derek (Ashley) Greiner, Darren Greiner, Michael Kelley, Megan Kelley and Stormy (Matt) Johnson; great grandchildren, Kayden Edwards, Aareanna Osborn, Sierra Davis and Colin Greiner; sister, Evelyn Beirce; brothers, Milo True Dady and Orville Dady; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one son Terry Wayne Fortune; her daughter Ruth’s significant other Jeff Watters, whom she thought so much of, three brothers, ten sisters and her long-time sweetie Guy Mills.

The funeral service for Mrs. Pfadenhauer will be 3 p.m. Friday, July 19 at Lunning Chapel. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until the time of service on Friday.

Lavon Pfadenhauer

Janet Fae Martin, 91, of Burlington, passed peacefully Saturday, July 13, 2024, at the Klein Center in West Burlington.

Born May 24, 1933, in Wapello, she was the daughter of Mark William and Myrtle Agnes Swan Dietrick. She married Thomas Martin on March 7, 1952, and they later divorced.

She worked as a clerk for J.S. Schramms and Walmart. She retired in 1995.

She was a member of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ)

Janet was an avid reader and loved reading and learning about history. She enjoyed doing crossword puzzles and was a proud Chicago Cubs fan. She also enjoyed collecting owls. Most important to her was her time spent with her children and her grandchildren.

She is survived by her three daughters; Stephanie (Stephen) Wilson of Thornville, Ohio, Shelley (Barry) Hopson of Columbus, Ohio and Sydney (Kenneth) Dick of Burlington; six grandchildren, Alteza Kemp, Aaron (Jayme) Wilson, Amanda (Joseph) Rhodes, Arik (Chandra) Wilson, Kelly (Brian) Bonebrake and Kyle Dick; fourteen great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Mark William Dietrick and Myrtle Agnes Dietrick, son Michael Thomas Martin and brother Frank William Dietrick.

The memorial funeral service for Mrs. Martin will be 11 a.m. Friday, July 26 at First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) 1221 Park Ave., Burlington. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service. A luncheon will be held immediately following.

Janet Fae Martin

Seanne Marie West, 59, of Sperry, passed away peacefully Wednesday, July 10, 2024 at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City surrounded by her family. Born on Nov. 12, 1964, she was the daughter of James C. Hausner and Janet A. Bell. Seanne was a graduate of Danville High School. She married Kirk Loeffler and of this union they had a daughter; they later divorced.&nbsp;&nbsp;Seanne later married Frederick C. West Jr. and of this union two daughters were born; they divorced. For the last 31 years Seanne has spent her life happily with her husband, Walter D. West, gaining two bonus daughters.

Seanne enjoyed working outdoors caring for her garden and yard; her home was her pride and joy. Seanne spent many summers camping with Wally and her children. For 14 years Seanne spent winters in Everglades City, Florida as the beach was a happy place for her. She didn’t know a stranger and was often teased by Wally for smiling in public because they could never get out of a public place as she would end up talking to people, whether she knew them or not. Seanne loved her children, bonus children, and grandchildren more than life itself. Her favorite times were gatherings with all of her grandchildren together at once. Seanne and Wally lived in Sperry, Iowa in their little heaven on Earth, with their dog, Jack; kittens, Bo and Luke; and most recent addition of chickens. Seanne wanted chickens for a long time, and just like every other dream she had, Wally made that happen for her.&nbsp;

Seanne was preceded in death by her mother, Janet (Robert) Bell; father, James Hausner; maternal grandparents, George and Margaret Besco; and paternal grandparents, Alonzo and Madeline Hausner. She is survived by her husband, Walter of Sperry; dog, Jack; children, Jamie (Daniel) Pringle of Keota, Heidi (Cole) Musselman of Mediapolis, Kayla Harkless of Keosauqua, Whitney (Dan) Kinney of West Burlington, and Kaysie (Gabe) Burden of New London; grandchildren, Chloe, Skyler, and Aiden Pringle; Kaylee and Karter Calvin; Brantley Musselman; Bucannon and Logan Harkless; and Ava and Ari Kinney.&nbsp;

According to her wishes, her body has been cremated and a family Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.&nbsp;&nbsp;Elliott Chapel, New London, is assisting the family.

For 14 years Seanne spent winters in Everglades City, Florida as the beach was a happy place for her. She didn’t know a stranger and was often teased by Wally for smiling in public because they could never get out of a public place as she would end up talking to people, whether she knew them or not. Seanne loved her children, bonus children, and grandchildren more than life itself. Her favorite times were gatherings with all of her grandchildren together at once. Seanne and Wally lived in Sperry, Iowa in their little heaven on Earth, with their dog, Jack; kittens, Bo and Luke; and most recent addition of chickens. Seanne wanted chickens for a long time, and just like every other dream she had, Wally made that happen for her.&nbsp;Seanne was preceded in death by her mother, Janet (Robert) Bell; father, James Hausner; maternal grandparents, George and Margaret Besco; and paternal grandparents, Alonzo and Madeline Hausner. She is survived by her husband, Walter of Sperry; dog, Jack; children, Jamie (Daniel) Pringle of Keota, Heidi (Cole) Musselman of Mediapolis, Kayla Harkless of Keosauqua, Whitney (Dan) Kinney of West Burlington, and Kaysie (Gabe) Burden of New London; grandchildren, Chloe, Skyler, and Aiden Pringle; Kaylee and Karter Calvin; Brantley Musselman; Bucannon and Logan Harkless; and Ava and Ari Kinney.&nbsp;According to her wishes, her body has been cremated and a family Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.&nbsp;&nbsp;Elliott Chapel, New London, is assisting the family.

Larry Lloyd Hale, 87, of Burlington, died Tuesday, July 9, 2024, at his home.

Born May 1, 1937, in Burlington, he was the son of Lloyd and Maxine Hale. He proudly served in the Iowa Army National Guard. He married Karen Bush on Dec. 27, 1959. She preceded him in death on Feb. 24, 2022.

Larry was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and was an Electrician. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, all racing and race cars; late models, dirt track and watching NASCAR. He was proud of his military heritage and loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

He is survived by his two children; Tonya (Scott) Powell and Doug (Debby) Hale; grandchildren, Daniel (Mitzi) Powell, Elizabeth Swan, Michael (Nicole) Powell, Katelyn (Jordan) Adamson and James (Scarlet) Hale; six great grandchildren; one sister Elaine Lox; nieces and nephews and his constant faithful companion, Koda.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife Karen.

The funeral service for Mr. Hale will be 11 a.m. Monday, July 15 at Lunning Chapel. Burial will be held in Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the funeral service.

A memorial has been established for the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard.

John Curtis Robertson, 88, of Farmington, died Sunday, July 7, 2024, at his home. He was born on Sept. 15, 1935, in Washington County, the son of Marion Curtis and Lola Francis Alliman Robertson. On June 5, 1960, he married Shirley Smith in Brighton.

Survivors include his wife: Shirley of Farmington; daughter: Rene Robertson of North Hartford, Conn.; brother: Don (Beverly) Robertson of Washington, Iowa; sister: Ann (Jim) Helmich of Livonia, Mo. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; nephew: Frankie Joe Chmelar; brothers: Larry Dean and Marion James Robertson; one sister: Marilyn Jean Chmelar.

John was a member of Grace Hill Moravian Church. He attended Brighton and Washington Schools and Paris Beauty Academy. He and his brother Jim, owned and operated Robertson’s Salon of Beauty in Washington. He was also farmed and did lawn care. John enjoyed fishing, gardening, and golfing.

The family will receive friends from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Friday, July 12, 2024, at the Farmington United Methodist Church in Farmington, Iowa.

Donald Dean Ward,&nbsp;86, of Donnellson, formerly of Bonaparte, died Tuesday, July 9, 2024, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in Fort Madison.

He was born on Nov. 29, 1937, in Keosauqua, the son of Alva George and Laurece Nelson Ward. On April 26, 1959, he married Connie Randolph in Bonaparte.

He is survived by his wife: Connie; children: Alan Ward of Bonaparte, Dennis Ward of Alabama, Linda Green of Bonaparte; grandchildren: Andy (Jackie) Ward, Wyatt (Wendy) Ward, Ian (Julie) Ward, Emily (Mike) Ward - Thal, Jake (Christy) Ward, Zach (Anna) Kreiss, Colby (Katie) Kreiss, Nathan (Hannah) Losey, Trae Green and fourteen great grandchildren. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; twin siblings in infancy; two sisters: Susan and Dixie; two brothers: Mike and Jim.

Don was a 1955 graduate of Bonaparte High School. He served in the United States Army. He worked for Ortho and then as a safety officer in the chemical industry for McCulley Consulting. Don enjoyed woodworking and building model airplanes.

Shirley Jean Hamarstrom, 76, of Burlington, passed away Friday, July 5, 2024, at Arbor Court in Mount Pleasant.

A funeral service will be 11 a.m. on Wednesday, July 10, 2024, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Orion, Ill.&nbsp; Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. at the church.&nbsp; Interment will follow at the Lutheran Cemetery in Orion.

Shirley was born on Feb. 12, 1948, in Moline, Ill., the daughter of Edward and Dorothy I. Bergstrom Hamann.&nbsp; She married Jeffrey Bruce Hamarstrom on April 8, 1967, in Orion and he preceded her in death on March 10, 2013.

&nbsp;Shirley was a homemaker and had an in home day care for children.&nbsp; She was a former member of St. Paul Lutheran Church.&nbsp; Shirley loved watching British TV and reading books especially Agatha Christie mystery novels and watching B-Horror movies.&nbsp; Shirley enjoyed telling and hearing stories as well as listening to Meatloaf and Guns N’ Roses.&nbsp; She had a knack for interacting with children and loved traveling and spending time with her family.

Shirley is survived by her children; Jeffrey (Elaine) Hamarstrom, Lisa (Robert) Lilienthal and Michael (Christina) Hamarstrom; grandchildren; Anneliese (Ed) Lowe, Bobby Lilienthal, Ashlyn Hamarstrom, Jara Hamarstrom, Sophia Hamarstrom, Kenzie Hamarstrom; great granddaughter; Jozie Berges.

John Edwin Pauly, born on Jan. 30, 1939, in Burlington, died peacefully on June 27, 2024, in Wauwatosa, Wis., at the age of 85. 
 
John's early life in Iowa laid the foundation for a lifetime of dedication and service. He graduated from Burlington High School in 1957, and continued his education at the University of Missouri, where he earned his degree in 1961. Following his studies, John honorably served in the Army for two years, where he developed skills that would benefit him throughout his life.

John is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Sharon Pauly (née Horn); his children, Douglas (Holly) and Lisa (David) Sutrick; his grandchildren, Jason, Matthew, Connor, and Jordyn; and his great-grandchildren, Cayden, Abigail, and Eliana. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mark and Dorothy.

Professionally, John was a respected Computer Systems Analyst and Project Manager at JCPenney, where he worked until his retirement. His commitment to community was evident through his 18 years of service on the Village Board in Brown Deer. In recent years, he served as the president of the condo association, demonstrating his ongoing dedication to leadership and community engagement.

John and Sharon enjoyed traveling and volunteering at the Grapevine Opry while residing in Texas.&nbsp; He was also an avid train collector. His joy was most evident when playing with his great-grandchildren, a testament to his caring and playful spirit.

Our family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff at Froedtert Hospital, Fresenius Dialysis Centers in Brookfield&nbsp;and Slinger, Horizon Hospice and Touching Hearts for their loving care.

Kirk Howard Watson Sr., 76, of Burlington, died Tuesday, July 2, 2024 at his residence.

Born Feb. 2, 1948 in Quincy, Ill., he was the son of Howard Andrew and Marie Louise Wellman Watson. Kirk graduated from Quincy High School and Culver Stockton College.

On Jan. 17, 1970, Kirk married Cathy Lynn Hines at First Christian Church in Burlington.

He was a salesman and retired from Fox Appliance. Kirk attended First Christian Church. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, watching baseball and football games. He loved the outdoors and traveling.

Survivors include his wife of Burlington; one daughter Elizabeth&nbsp; Watson; one son Kirk Watson Jr.; and five grandchildren .

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and one sister.

The memorial service for Kirk will be 2 p.m., Saturday, July 6 at First Christian Church with Reverend David Yonker officiating.

Per his wishes, cremation has been accorded and entrusted to the care of Lunning Chapel.

Jeremy Emmett Snelling (a.k.a. Miss Emma), 50, of West Burlington, died&nbsp; Thursday, July 4, 2024, at his home.

Born on Oct. 7, 1973, in El Reno, Okla., he was the son of Jay Snelling and Glenda Mosher.

Emmett (a.k.a. Miss Emma) had a heart of gold and will be remembered for his out going and most often out spoken bubbly and boisterous personality. He was very spirited and loud and most often slightly out of control, which led to his many notorious stories. His most favorite holiday was Christmas. Emmett loved to collect pandas and rubber ink stamps. He knew design and loved to make costumes for drag performances. In his free time, he enjoyed learning and reading about old Hollywood. Emmett loved his pets and would refer to himself as a fur daddy. His joyful spirit and kind heart will be deeply missed.

He is survived by his seven siblings: Glenn, Gary, Jerald and Geoffery Snelling, Jailyn Bardwell, Jean Locke and Jennifer Griffin all of El Reno, Okla.; and numerous nieces and nephews. Also surviving are several close friends: Jerry Fenton, Curt Dietz (a.k.a. Courtney Michaels), Jace McKeever, Jason Murphy (a.k.a. Holly Vagas) and cousin Jessie Renolds.

He was preceded in death by his mother; grandparents: Glenn and Sylvia Wright and Frank and Louise Snelling.

Jeremy Emmett Snelling 

Patricia Carol Ross, 73, of Newton, Iowa, formerly of Burlington, died on Saturday, July 6, 2024, at MercyOne Medical Center, in Newton.

Born on Dec. 24, 1950, in Burlington, she was the daughter of George and Mildred Hunter Whitford.

Patricia graduated from Burlington High School in 1968. She was a seamstress for Hollywood movies, sewing costumes for Chuck Norris in the movie Missing in Action, Top Gun and several other movies. Patricia worked and retired from Winegard after several years of employment. She had a little side business sewing wedding dresses and costumes for many people. One of Patricia’s favorite things to do was bake with her grandchildren. She also enjoyed camping, fishing and crocheting with her favorite blanket on her lap. Most of all Patricia loved being with family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

She is survived by two daughters: Tricia (Harry) Lewis and Tanya Zurmuehlen both of Newton; six grandchildren: Alexis Steward, Chantelle (Isaiah) Stout, Danielle Zurmuehlen, James Lewis, Nikita and Tiesha Conner; seven great grandchildren and sister Gloria (Dennis) Givens. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Per her wishes, cremation has been accorded and entrusted to the care of Lunning Chapel.

A Graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, July 12, 2024 at Burlington Memorial Park.

Patricia worked and retired from Winegard after several years of employment. She had a little side business sewing wedding dresses and costumes for many people. One of Patricia’s favorite things to do was bake with her grandchildren. She also enjoyed camping, fishing and crocheting with her favorite blanket on her lap. Patty Jo Clark, 73, of Dallas City, Ill., went to be with the Lord on Monday, July 1, 2024 at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in West Burlington.

She was born on Sept. 4, 1950, the daughter of Alvin and Regina Luehlfing McKoon. On April 7, 1990 she married Nicky Clark Sr.

Patty had worked at GE in Burlington. She enjoyed cooking, quilting, bird watching and her cat, “Punkin”. She looked forward to her monthly bunco nights with her sister and her friends.

She loved spending time with her family, especially her grandkids and great-grandkids. They were the light of her life. Nick was the love of her life. She loved going for car rides with her sweetheart in her red ‘65 Mustang.

Patty is survived by her husband Nick, two daughters, Chris (Scott) Erickson and Kim (Roger) Smith; two bonus kids, Lisa (Matt) Tate and Nicky Clark Jr. (Shar Rael); her grandchildren, Asia (Ryan) Millizer, Mariah Orton, Brandon and Gabbie Erickson, Logan Tate, Kameron and Chase Clark and three great-grandchildren, Silas, Charlotte and Everleigh.

She is also survived by her sister, Gloria (Rick) Ruiz, her brother, Tom (Diane) McKoon and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Cremation has been entrusted to Banks &amp; Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City. There will be a graveside service at a later date.&nbsp;

Janice Coleen Finke, 81, of Burlington, died Thursday, July 4, 2024, at the Genesis Medical Center East, Davenport in Davenport. Born Nov. 27, 1942, in Council Bluffs, she was the daughter of Floyd W. and Audrey I. Mallone Carr. On April 4, 1981, she married Harold Richard Finke in Burlington. He preceded her in death on Feb. 18, 2024. She graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in Council Bluffs in 1961.&nbsp; She attended classes at Southeastern Community College, where she had worked as a project coordinator for two years. She drove a school bus for the Burlington School District for 22 years before retiring in 2002. She also worked at Mutual of Omaha Life Insurance, and was a foreman at Finke's Detasseling and Pioneer in Mount Pleasant for five years.&nbsp; She enjoyed music, her favorite was Gospel. She also liked band music, and played the coronet and sang. She loved gardening. She was very spiritual and was an active member of Harmony Bible Church. She participated in a group that made cards for the sick. She loved to read spiritual books and the Bible. Janice made her home in Burlington in 1963 and always loved the community. She was a member of the Red Hat Society, Prime Timers, and Travelogue. She loved to visit with friends, and to sing songs at nursing homes and with her Praise Singers Group. She had a personal walk with Jesus and there is no question that she is now rejoicing in heaven. Survivors include two sons, Craig Eugene Bowerbank of Lawrenceburg, Tenn., Brian Dean (Amy) Bowerbank of Zionsville, Ind.; daughter, Darla Janeen (Roy) Cochenour of Danville; four grandchildren: Joshua, Katie, Trevor and Morgan; one great-grandchild, Jayden; and three sisters, Karen (Rick) Frasure of Redding, Calif., Kathy Liston of Freemont, Neb. and Lisa (Scott) Dubsky of Columbus, Neb.; and many nieces and nephews. Lea Anne Kirby, born Nov. 1, 1952, died June 24, 2024.

Born Lea Anne Bonar, she was the only daughter to James Bonar and Bertha Wilson Bonar. She had five brothers.&nbsp;

She graduated from Burlington High School in 1970. On Dec. 1, 1973, she married Gary Kirby.

Lea Anne was a caregiver by nature. She looked after her two younger brothers, nieces and nephews and was a caregiver to her parents, when their health declined. She also raised her two children, Kyle and Kasie, and claimed all of their friends as her own.

During this time, she was also a bookkeeper and secretary at her two older brother’s businesses, Delta Auto Sales and Car Depot. Family and friends were everything to Lea Anne. Her home was your home and everyone called her mom.

She loved bowling, and began bowling at the age of 18, until she couldn’t anymore. She loved to travel and always looked forward to bowling nationals. She loved to read, sometimes reading three books simultaneously and she enjoyed going to the casino.

She was an avid Iowa Hawkeyes and St. Louis Cardinals fan, loved playing cards, especially Pitch, watching Tiktok (Ticky-Tok) and collecting recipes. She was an animal lover, owning many cats and dogs and most importantly, her favorite thing to do was dote on her grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband Gary Kirby; her two children, Kyle Kirby and Kasie Kirby; two grandchildren, Brinks Kirby and Bristol Kirby; five brothers, Tommy Bonar, Randy Bonar, Perry Bonar, David Bonar and James (Kelli) Bonar Jr. and several nieces and nephews.

According to her wishes, there will be no services. Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Lunning Chapel.&nbsp;

A celebration will be held on Aug. 4 at the UAW 807 Union Hall at 11 a.m. A memorial has been established.

Robert John “Rob” Orton, 52, of West Burlington, died June 30, 2024, at Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born on June 19, 1972, in Burlington, the son of Gary R. Orton and Carol M. Zauhar. He was a cherished son, husband, father, grandfather, and uncle. On May 20, 1993, at Camp Smith on Oahu, Hawaii, he married the love of his life Janel Lynn Howe.

Robert graduated from Mediapolis High School and dedicated his career to skilled labor as a union electrician for IBEW #13 and later as a Maintenance Supervisor at Hearth &amp; Home and previously at Champion (Federal Mogul). He served his country in the U.S. Army Reserves for two years.

He attended Lutheran Church of Hope services at Bethany Lutheran Church; Robert found solace and community in his faith. His life was marked by a profound love for his family, evident in the joy he found in spending time with his wife, children, and grandchildren. An avid outdoorsman, Robert relished hunting, fishing, and riding his motorcycle with his wife, activities that brought him closer to nature and the people he loved. His fondest times were camping, boating and fishing at the family camp ground. Rob was a diehard Iowa Hawkeye fan.

Robert is survived by his loving wife, Janel Orton; daughters Candy Macans (Sheldon) of Burlington;, Danielle DiPrima (Anthony) Jacksonville, N.C.; Daughter by blessing Cari Lara (Ric); grandchildren Riley, Emersyn, Carson, Olivia, Sofia, Aaron, Alex, and Amari; Parents; Gary and Suzy Orton; niece Asia Millizer and several other nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his mother Carol Zauhar, his maternal grandparents Anne and John Zauhar and paternal grandparents Robert “Bob” and Virginia Orton.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 5 at 10 a.m. at Bethany Lutheran Church in Burlington, IA, with Pastor Marcus Timmons. Pamela Ann Turner, 62, of Burlington, Iowa, died on Saturday, June 29, 2024, at her home.

Born on March 22, 1962, in Monmouth, Ill., she was the daughter of Donald M. and Shirley A. Conners Stokes. On Dec. 21, 1981, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Burlington, she married Bruce E. Turner.

Pam was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend. Her heart was loving, caring and pure. Pam truly cared for everyone she came in contact with. For several years Pam owned and operated an in-home daycare and had recently decided it was time to retire. Her daycare children were her life and she loved each child like they were her own. Pam was the glue to the family. She enjoyed hosting huge gatherings inviting all family and friends. Most of all Pam’s family was her constant and she was their constant.

She is survived by her husband Bruce; two daughters: Shirley (John) Rothell and Bobbie Sours both of Burlington; six grandchildren: Ryley, Donny (Katlyn), Pamela, Taylor, Trevor and Tyler; two great grandchildren: Paysley, Willa and one on the way; two sisters: Carol Starr of Oquwaka, Illinois and Debi Witt of Eldora, Iowa. Also surviving is Travis Sours, who was like a son to Pam.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brother Donald Stokes and sister Sandy Stokes.

A celebration of life will be held from 2 to 6 p.m. Saturday, July 13, 2024, at the Eagles Club in Burlington.

Evan L. Ruschill, 63, died July 1, 2024 at New London Specialty Care in New London. Born on April 27, 1961, he was the son of Virgil and Jane Fuhrer Ruschill.

Evan attended Sperry Elementary School, and Mediapolis Junior and Senior High Schools, graduating in 1979. He was active in the music program and drove a school bus for two years on a regular route and for extracurricular activities. He was also a 4-H member.

After obtaining a business degree from Scott Community College, he worked for Davenport Bank and Hockenbergs Restaurant Supply. He then earned his nursing degree from Blackhawk College, working as an RN at a nursing home and hospitals in Davenport, Chicago, and St. Louis.

Evan loved cars, and owned many in his lifetime. In addition to his love of cars and driving, he enjoyed music, movies, and searching antique stores and flea markets for treasures for himself and to gift to others.

Evan is survived by his father, Virgil Ruschill of Burlington, his sister Colleen (Don) Squires of Clatskanie, Ore., and his brother Alan (Sue) Ruschill of Burlington. He is also survived by nieces and nephews Ben, Bethany (Michael), Emily, Jamie (Patrick), and Renae (Richard), and great nieces and nephew Zac, Zoey Jane, and Luna, as well as aunts, an uncle, and numerous cousins.

He was preceded in death by his mother Jane, his sister and brother-in-law Jill and Dennis Dickey, his grandparents, and two uncles.

Born Dec. 1, 1922, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Roy Frank and Eunice Mildred Murphy Davison. On Nov. 22, 1945, she married Donald E. Ralston, Jr in West Palm Beach, Fla.&nbsp;

Rita was a registered nurse at Burlington Medical Center and The Klein Center for over 36 years.

She was a member of St. John and Paul Catholic Church, Jane A. Delano Nurses Association and the V. F. W. Auxiliary. She volunteered at Phelps House and Players Workshop. She enjoyed working on genealogy, spending time with her grandkids and enjoyed visits with Sister Kathy. She loved to bake, cook, sew and do crossword puzzles. Playing Progressive Rummy with her family was the highlight of family gatherings.&nbsp;

She is survived by three daughters: Angela Klemish of Phoenix, Ariz, Martha (Manke) Upton and Nanette Verrips both of Burlington. One son, Michael Ralston of Burlington. One brother, Robert (Shirley) Davison of Longmont, Colo. One sister, Ruth (Bartels) Whalen of Iowa City, A sister-in-law, Joni Davison of Dubuque, and a son-in-law Edward Stuessel of Marion. Eleven grandchildren; Steven, Kimberly “Susie”, Samantha, Alex, Danielle, Nicole, Marie, Phillip, Hannibal “Axton”, Jessica and Megan. Twenty-eight great grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by her husband, parents, an infant son, Timothy Ralston, daughter Antonette “Tonie” Stuessel; brother, Richard Davison; son-in-law, Clayton “Tate” Klemish and two grandchildren Adona Ralston and John Klemish.
