Gary A. Russell, 64, of Burlington, died Thursday, August 7, 2025, at his home. Born December 30, 1960, he was the son of Floyd J. and Bonnie Russell.

He worked for Champion Spark Plug for over 20 years.

Gary was very well known and loved. He had a plethora of friends and was a great step-dad.

He is survived by his wife Connie Russell; three step children; Dustin Wagy (Jennifer) of Casper, WY, Matthew Wagy (Sarah) of Encampment WY and Megan Ronner (Darrin) of Gladstone, IL; siblings, Craig Russell, Larry Russell of Fort Madison, IA and Lorrie (Dennis) McGinity of Burlington; ½ sister Sharon Cameron of Plattsmouth, NE and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother James Russsell and sister Pamela Wightson.

There will be a celebration of Gary’s life held on Friday, August 15th starting at 2:00 p.m. at the Outpost.

According to his wishes, cremation has been entrusted to the care of Lunning Chapel.

Melissa Ann Duroe, 43, of Tiffin, Iowa, formerly of Burlington, passed away Thursday, August 7, 2025, at her home. Born March 1, 1982, in Burlington, Iowa, she was the daughter of Donald and Cathy Ita Boeset.

She married B.J. Duroe on October 5, 2019, at Zion United Church of Christ in Burlington.

Melissa worked for Walmart for 20 years both in the Burlington store and the Coralville store.

She was the loving mother of three children and three grandchildren. She loved watching the Iowa Hawkeyes, especially Caitlin Clark and enjoyed following her nieces' and nephews’ sports, line dancing, and traveling to beaches with her brother and sister-in-law. Melissa was fun-loving, ornery, and very family-oriented.

She is survived by her husband B.J. Duroe; three children, Ashley Duroe Olson (Andrew), Alexandra Duroe Jordon (Jason) and Michael Duroe (Jon); three grandchildren Kaiden Olson, Kinzie Olson and Amelia Jordon; mother Cathy Boeset; siblings, Nick Boeset (Reagan), Kimberly Harms, David Boeset, Harold Boeset and Tim Boeset; nephew Beckett and nieces Harper, Ashley and Michelle.

She was preceded in death by her father and brother Craig Boeset.

Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Friday, August 15th at Lunning Chapel where the family will receive friends. The celebration of life for Melissa will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, August 16th at Zion United Church of Christ. Burial will follow in Aspen Grove Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established for Iowa City Hospice and Zion United Church of Christ.

Dorothy Veronica Murphy Marsh, 91, of Burlington, died Saturday, August 2, 2025, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in West Burlington. Born July 24, 1934, in Plattsburg, N.Y., she was the daughter of Bernard Francis and Dorothy Veronica Snyder Murphy. On February 22, 1957, she married Benjamin Marvin Marsh in Beekmantown, N.Y., who preceded her in death on March 6, 2016. Dotti graduated from high school and later earned an Associate's Degree from Southeastern Community College. Throughout her life, she worked for several companies, including the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant and Chittenden &amp; Eastmen Furniture Company where she served as an ordering consultant. In retirement, she earned the nickname "Tool Belt Dotti" for her eagerness to take on new projects around her home, whether it was replacing floors or creating a patio. Dotti was a member of Divine Mercy Parish and found joy in a wide range of interests. She had a passion for gardening and surrounded her home with a vibrant array of flowers. She enjoyed listening to Jazz music, dancing, reading, watching her favorite shows, and occasionally dabbled in golf. &nbsp;Dotti treasured her travels with friends, enjoying their company and adventures. Her dog, Rusty, became her constant companion in her later years. Rusty was more than a pet; he was a family member who brought Dotti comfort and unconditional love during her remaining days. Survivors include her sister, Collista (James) Reed of Riverside, Calif.; sisters-in-law, Dolores Murphy and Kathy Murphy; and many nieces and nephews from both Marsh and Murphy families. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers, Bernard Jr., Leonard, Raymond, and Marvin Murphy., and one sister, Theresa Spivey. Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh Crematory.

Dorothy Veronica Marsh

Kim Jane Salek Hull, 71, passed unexpectedly on the morning of August 3, 2025, in Burlington, Iowa. Kim was born on June 13, 1954, to William Obermann and Rosella Massner Obermann in Burlington. She married LaVerne Salek on February 10, 1973, and had five children. She later married Stan Hull on May 14, 2005.

Kim was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her husband, Stan Hull, her brothers, Kent (Deb) Obermann and Greg (Kathy) Obermann; children Cari (Aaron) Sands, Erika Salek, Jaime (Brian Venn) Salek, Lindy Salek, and Kile (Andrea) Salek; step-children Ben Hull and Becky (LaTron) Hull-Covert; and grandchildren Sam and Willa Sands, Kadin Salek, Ruby and Hattie Salek, Lynnley Hull, and Max Hull.

It is impossible to properly summarize Kim Hull. She will be remembered for her joyful, safe, and grounded presence and her constantly open door. She was a humble anchor of her community and was always ready to lend an ear and offer advice. She had such a way of making people feel seen and loved. She was vulnerable, open, and safe, not afraid to wear her emotions on her sleeve and meet people where they were, creating space for all of a person. Her faith was one of the most evident things about her - you couldn’t hold a conversation with her without her pointing you to the Lord. She was a founding member of Cornerstone Community Bible Church, where you would often find her leading worship and prayer with the Narrow Road.

During her 31 years working for the Girl Scouts, Kim lived out the tenets of the organization and inspired volunteers to stay plugged in. She was also a volunteer herself, and devoted many hours to Informed Choices Medical Clinic, was a member of the school board, and started the first Children’s Reading Hour at the Mediapolis Public Library. She was a maker and a lover of beauty. She fiercely loved her grandkids, and was their biggest cheerleader in all their pursuits, home or away.

Kim had a way of drawing people together and poured into people everywhere she went, and the ripple effect of her presence will continue to be felt for years to come.

Per her wishes cremation has been entrusted and accorded to the care of Lunning Chapel.

Vera Helen Krieger, 94, of Burlington, died Wednesday, August 6, 2025, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.

Born January 6, 1931, in Burlington, Iowa, she was the daughter of Edwin and Helen Reinecke.&nbsp; She met her future husband Floyd James Krieger at the roller-skating rink and they were later married on April 10, 1955 at Salem Lutheran Church.&nbsp; Vera was born in the city, married a farmer and never left the farm.&nbsp; He preceded her in death on October 6, 2024.

Vera worked for Van’s Lunchbox, National Research Bureau and Burlington Federal Savings and Loan.&nbsp; But the best job of all was being a farm wife and mother to four kids.

She was a member of Salem Lutheran Church and Peace Lutheran Church.

She served as the longtime treasurer for the Women’s Group and was a quilter and historian for Peace Lutheran Church.&nbsp; She loved playing softball and basketball in her youth and golfing and bowling later in life.&nbsp; She took great pleasure in playing cards, dominos and croquet with her grandchildren.

She will be greatly missed by her four children; Steven (Reta) Krieger of Burlington, Iowa,&nbsp; Jeffrey (Linda) Krieger of Fort Myers, Florida, Linda (Bill) Risenhoover of Bucyrus, Kansas and David (Marcia) Krieger of West Des Moines, Iowa; seven grandchildren, Brian (Melissa) Krieger, Deanne (James) Lessard, Dan (Prissilla) Krieger, Jamie Risenhooven, Matthew (Parisa) Risenhoover, Laura (Ben) Lohmeier and Dennis (Jill) Krieger; 15 great grandchildren, Olivia and Lauren Krieger, Jordan, Lillian, Noah, Zachary and Faith Lessard, Camila, Javier, Ximena Krieger, Cooper Risenhoover, Thomas Lucas, Maren Lohmeier and Isaac Krieger.

Vera Helen Krieger

Pauline Rae Russell, 94, of West Burlington, died Thursday, July 31, 2025, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center Hospice House in West Burlington.

Born on June 19, 1931, in Gladstone, Ill., she was the daughter of Paul and Dorothy Kissinger Rhoades. She married Robert Russell, and of that union they had four children. They later divorced.

Pauline was a graduate of Gladstone Oquawka High School. She worked for Burlington Medical Center in the Central Supply department for over 20 years, where she retired from. Pauline and her twin sister Paula enjoyed taking trips together down to Branson, Mo. Every morning, Pauline enjoyed going to the local diner for breakfast in Oquawka and meeting up with her friends. Most of all, Pauline loved nothing more than to be with her family, especially her grandchildren.

She is survived by two children: Ann Russell and John Russell both of Burlington; seven grandchildren: Tracy Hopkins, Jody Hopkins, Daniel (Melissa) Hopkins, Brady (Lindsay) McCoy, Jacey (Zach Shinberger) Russell, Amy (Jordan) McNally and Andrew Russell; six great grandchildren and six great-great grandchildren. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; twin sister Paula Bailey and sister Sherry Reid; two children: David Russell and Kathy Hopkins; son in-law Pat Hopkins, and grandson Aaron Russell.

The memorial service for Pauline will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2025, at Lunning Chapel with Pastor Roberta Robbins officiating. Pauline Russell

Ronald D. Pforts, 69, of Burlington, died Thursday, July 31, 2025, at the New London Care Center in New London after fighting a courageous battle of leukemia/lymphoma since 2010.

Born on Aug. 25, 1955, in Burlington, he was the son of Henry and Dorothy Liechty Pforts.

Ronald was a 1973 graduate of Washington High School in Washington, Iowa, and attended Andrew’s University. He served in the United States Air Force from 1975 to 1979 and worked as an Avionics technician for the A-7D fighter jet. He started trucking in 1979 for his father and different companies. In 1997 he owned and operated his own trucking company, hauling for Aldi until 2018. Ron then worked for Bauer Built Tire until his retirement in April of 2025.&nbsp; He was a past member of the Burlington Eagles Club and was of the Presbyterian faith. Ronald enjoyed horses, golfing, karaoke and loved to sing and play his guitar. He was a jack of all trades, excelling in welding and leather work. Ronald was a very dependable, patient and kind man.

He is survived by his life partner of 15 years Lisa A. Kalkbrenner of West Burlington; son Jeff Pforts of Burlington; daughter Allyssa (Michael) Gill of Canton, Georgia; grandsons: Henry Pforts of West Point, Iowa and Liam and Gabriel Gill both of Canton, Georgia; siblings: Mary Ann (Steve) Sieren of Keota and Franklin (Laura) Pforts of Clearfield, Utah. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews and extended family. He is additionally survived by is his dog, Luna.

The memorial service for Ronald will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Aug. 4, 2025, at Lunning Chapel with Pastor JudyAnn Morse officiating. Inurnment will be at Aspen Grove Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established in his memory for P.A.W. Animal Shelter in Fort Madison.

Pforts, 69, of Burlington, died Thursday, July 31, 2025, at the New London Care Center in New London after fighting a courageous battle of leukemia/lymphoma since 2010.Born on Aug. 25, 1955, in Burlington, he was the son of Henry and Dorothy Liechty Pforts.Ronald was a 1973 graduate of Washington High School in Washington, Iowa, and attended Andrew’s University. He served in the United States Air Force from 1975 to 1979 and worked as an Avionics technician for the A-7D fighter jet. He started trucking in 1979 for his father and different companies. In 1997 he owned and operated his own trucking company, hauling for Aldi until 2018. Ron then worked for Bauer Built Tire until his retirement in April of 2025.&nbsp; He was a past member of the Burlington Eagles Club and was of the Presbyterian faith. Ronald enjoyed horses, golfing, karaoke and loved to sing and play his guitar. He was a jack of all trades, excelling in welding and leather work. Ronald was a very dependable, patient and kind man.He is survived by his life partner of 15 years Lisa A. Kalkbrenner of West Burlington; son Jeff Pforts of Burlington; daughter Allyssa (Michael) Gill of Canton, Georgia; grandsons: Henry Pforts of West Point, Iowa and Liam and Gabriel Gill both of Canton, Georgia; siblings: Mary Ann (Steve) Sieren of Keota and Franklin (Laura) Pforts of Clearfield, Utah. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews and extended family. He is additionally survived by is his dog, Luna.He was preceded in death by his parents.The memorial service for Ronald will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Aug. 4, 2025, at Lunning Chapel with Pastor JudyAnn Morse officiating. Inurnment will be at Aspen Grove Cemetery.In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established in his memory for P.A.W. Animal Shelter in Fort Madison.

Kenneth Robert Gandre, 73, died Monday, July 28, 2025, in Burlington, Iowa.

Born August 19, 1951, in Hollywood, Calif., he was the son of Leslie and Barbara Gamber Gandre.&nbsp;

Kenny worked as a licensed general contractor for over 35 years. &nbsp;Upon retiring, he later worked another five years driving buses for Trailways. &nbsp;

Kenny was the type of man that could light up a room with his personality. &nbsp;He was very intelligent, quick witted and always knew the right thing to say to keep a smile on your face. &nbsp;He was very spiritual and kindhearted.&nbsp; It seemed that God had a plan for Kenny - he often showed up at the right place at the right time to help others in need. &nbsp;Whether it was stopping a robbery in San Francisco or rescuing someone from the clutches of the ocean, he was there at several key points in stranger's lives. &nbsp;Kenny was very creative and enjoyed gardening, hiking, the ocean and peace and quiet. He tended to live in rural areas that were not crowded.&nbsp; You could find Kenny living among nature either at the beach, or on a mountaintop. He had a soft spot for animals and would use his skills to create safe spaces for rabbits, deer and birds in his yard. &nbsp;He was also very interested in history, nature and the natural world.

Kenny was one of a kind. &nbsp;His kindness and warmth will be missed tremendously, but his memory will be carried by those who loved him.

Kenny's family include his children, Johnelle Barr, and Blake Arce; Beneit Gandre and siblings, Carolyn (Charles Handelin) Gandre and Thomas (Laura) Gandre; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh Crematory.

A remembrance of Kenny's life will be scheduled soon, and details will be published when they become available.

William Charles Phillips, 79, of Mediapolis, died Friday, August 1, 2025, at the University of Iowa Health Care Medical Center Downtown in Iowa City.

Born May 8, 1946, in Burlington, Iowa, Bill was the son of H. F. Mike and Phyllis Stuck Phillips.&nbsp;

Bill started working at 16 years old in sporting goods sales, taking a brief interlude in his younger years to serve his country with the United States Air Force. &nbsp;He would eventually sell sporting equipment through various retailers for 63 years and loved every day that he worked. &nbsp;He finished his sales career with Skeeter Kell Sporting Goods. &nbsp;Bill loved sports and worked as a sporting official for 50 years of his life, refereeing a variety of different sports. &nbsp;Bill also served as President of Heritage Oaks Golf Course and took great pride in the course.

Bill was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather and loved nothing more than to be with his family. &nbsp;He enjoyed traveling and seeing the world. &nbsp;Bill and Cindy enjoyed many trips to the Dominican Republic to visit friends. &nbsp;Bill was an excellent cook and never passed an opportunity to try new food, especially BBQ. &nbsp;He had an appreciation for gardening and nature; often enjoying the peace of an early morning golf course or the river when he was fishing. &nbsp;

Bill had the biggest heart and his kindness and appreciation for others stayed with him to the very end - always putting others before himself. &nbsp;He will be missed tremendously, but his memory and legacy will continue on through his family and friends.

Bill's family include his wife of 34 years, Cindy Phillips - affectionately known as his Cinderella; children, Angela (Brian) Phillips-Derengowski, Bill (Angie) Phillips, Tony (Michelle) Phillips, Hoang (Sima) Huynh, &nbsp;Kecia (Gray) Steelman, and Dusty (Joel) Prottsman; siblings, Barb (the late Randy) Drish, and Fr. Michael Phillips; sixteen grandchildren; and ten great grandchildren.

Sadly, Bill is preceded in death by his parents.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh Crematory. &nbsp;A celebration of life visitation for Bill will be held Saturday, August 30th from 5-7 pm at the Heritage Oaks Golf Course (15582 40th St., Wapello).

Kim Roxane Hand, 67, of Burlington, died Monday, July 28, 2025, at the Birkwood Village of Fort Madison in Fort Madison. Born Feb. 25, 1958, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Ervin and Carol Jean Goodwin. &nbsp;She was married to Jim Hand for close to 20 years but later divorced.&nbsp;

Kim worked for Hope Haven for over 20 years sorting cans. &nbsp;She later worked with Goodwill for an additional two years. &nbsp;

Kim was one of a kind. &nbsp;She inherited her kindness from her mom. &nbsp;She liked to enjoy two 7-7's just like granny. &nbsp;Kim never knew a stranger and loved all people and animals - especially her cat, Dexter. &nbsp;She cherished her family deeply and enjoyed spending as much time with them as she could.

Kim's passing leaves a sadness, but her kindness and memory will be carried by all who love her.

Kim's family include her siblings, Daniel (Lori) Goodwin, Ronald (Renee) Goodwin, Jason, Tracy (Chad) Martin, and Wendy (Lennie Lock) Goodwin; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Sadly, Kim was preceded in death by her mother, Carol; and her granny Owens.

William Harold Osborne Jr., 89, of Burlington, died Tuesday, July 29, 2025, at the Illinois Veterans Home in Quincy, Ill..

Born June 28, 1936, in Burlington, he was the son of William and Margaret Fitzgerald Osborne.

Bill served his country for 20 years, first in the Marines and then in the Army. &nbsp;After Bill retired from the service he worked for the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant for many years and also served in the Iowa National Guard. &nbsp;Bill had a good sense of humor. &nbsp;He was a hard worker throughout his life and enjoyed his downtime by going to the Hungry Bear for breakfast with his friends. &nbsp;They would often go fishing after to enjoy the day. &nbsp;Bill's passing leaves a sadness, but his memory will continue through his friends and family.

Bill's family include his brother, Jim (Connie) Osborne; and many nieces and nephews.

Sadly, &nbsp;Bill is preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Robert, Richard and John; and sister, Shirley.

Dixie Lee Collier, 83, of Burlington, died July 25, 2025. She was born Nov. 28, 1941, in Charlotte, Michigan.

With deep sorrow and immense gratitude for a well-lived life, we announce the passing of Dixie Lee Collier, aged 83, on July 25, 2025. A loving wife, devoted mother, proud grandmother and great-grandmother, and cherished friend. Dixie touched countless hearts with her warmth, generosity, and love of Christ.

She was born in Charlotte, Michigan, and eventually made Burlington, Iowa her cherished home. Dixie found joy in the simple pleasures—crocheting, cooking delicious meals, spending time in nature, and gathering with loved ones under the stars for bonfires. Her spirit radiated kindness, and she had an extraordinary way of making those around her feel truly seen and cared for.

Dixie is survived by her beloved husband Edwin Collier and her dear brother Randy Rolfe (Gloria Rolfe). Her memory lives on through her children: Barb VanHaitsma (Aaron VanHaitsma), Trish Collier, and Scott Collier (Charlene Collier); and her grandchildren: Courtney Mandeville, Kendle Redden, Joshua Redden, Jeremy Collier, Chelsea Grundmeier, Jon Collier, Liz Atkinson, Eli Collier, Leah Collier, Colin VanHaitsma, Brandon VanHaitsma, and Sean VanHaitsma. She leaves behind a remarkable legacy of love through her great-grandchildren: Addison, Connor, Brayden, Mya, Keegan, Trevor, Gavin, Luca, Paisley, JJ, Jordan, Austin, Gabryel, Sebastyan, Nora Mae, Sawyer, Finley, Isabella, Haven, Edyn, Salem, Juriaan, Archer, and Iris.

Her life was a tapestry of love, generosity, and grace—woven with laughter, stitched with devotion, and framed by cherished moments spent with her family. The greatest Star Wars fan Paul Leslie Elledge, 49, of Gladstone, Ill., passed away on Sunday, July 27, 2025.

Born on April 16, 1976, in Burlington, he was the son of David and Paula Askew Elledge.

He is survived by his parents Dave and Paula and a large extended family from coast to coast. Also surviving are very special friends.

Paul Leslie Elledge

Claude M. Frisbee, 88, of Burlington, died Saturday, July 26, 2025, at the Klein Center in West Burlington.

Born Nov. 2, 1936, in Shelbina, Mo., he was the son of Beryl H. and Martha "Mattie" Porter Frisbee. On December 25, 1955, he married Rosa Lee Richards in Shelbina, Mo. She preceded him in death on Oct. 13, 2021.

He was a graduate of Shelbina High School. Claude worked as a mechanical engineer for JI Case Corp for 42 years and was awarded 64 patents during his career.

Growing up on a farm instilled a love of nature for Claude at a young age. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, canoeing and pretty much anything to do with being outdoors. Claude also enjoyed working on a variety of woodworking projects in his shop.

Survivors include two sons, Matthew Frisbee of Burlington and Beryl "Gene" Frisbee of Houston, Texas; daughter, Cathy Frisbee of West Burlington; seven grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; brother, Harold Frisbee of Kansas City, Mo.; sister, Marylou Carter of Virginia and former sister-in-law, Annette Frisbee of Kansas City, Mo..

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, son, Edward Frisbee and one granddaughter.&nbsp;

There will be no visitation or services. He will be entombed with his wife at Aspen Grove Cemetery.

William James "Bill" Beaty, 75, of Middletown, passed away at his home July 19, 2025, surrounded by his family and dog Harley (who never left his side).

Born July 15, 1950, in Keokuk, he was the son of Wilfred and Francis Ewers Beaty. &nbsp;He went to Keokuk Senior High School, which he eventually left to start in the workforce.

In 1970 he married Lucille Swinderman but later divorced. &nbsp;Together they had two children, Keith Beaty and Jamie Beaty.

Bill was a &nbsp;member of Operating Engineers Local 148 at Foote Mineral until the strike in 1985 and most of the employees lost their jobs. &nbsp;He sold fireworks and antique reproduction furniture from 1992 until 2004 south of Wayland, Mo., and worked as a home contractor during that time. &nbsp;In 2001 he worked as a member of Operating Engineers Local 150 at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant powerhouse where he eventually retired. &nbsp;

Bill had a passion for fast cars, boating and motorcycling. &nbsp;He spent countless hours polishing and maintaining his possessions. &nbsp;Many would remember his 4th of July celebrations. &nbsp;Bill loved discussing current events and the political landscape which was known to all who knew him. &nbsp;He enjoyed nothing more than a discussion on the issue of the day. &nbsp;He wasn't afraid to share his perspective on the world. &nbsp;If you knew him you knew.

Survivors include son, Keith Beaty, daughter, Jamie (Michelle) Beaty; grandsons, Austin Irwin and Bryce Irwin; special friend and companion of 20 years, Sandy Helling; sisters, Janet Beaty and Rosemary Touhey Stewart; many nieces and nephews; and honorary son, Scott Davis.

He was preceded in death by his parents Wilfred and Francis; three siblings, Mary Davis, Larry Beaty and Carolyn Hamilton; and his dog, Gunner.

Darwin "Dar" Charles Cooley, 74, of Burlington, passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 20, 2025, at Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in West Burlington.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Born on September 21, 1950, in Burlington, Iowa, Darwin was the son of Charles and Leona (Wirt) Cooley.&nbsp;

Darwin was a 1968 graduate of Burlington High School and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy from the University of Iowa in 1974. He was a dedicated pharmacist who had many professional achievements and impactful contributions serving as the Director of Pharmacy at Great River Medical Center for 46 years.&nbsp;

Beyond his professional achievements, Darwin found joy in the simple pleasures of life. He loved spending time outdoors gardening, fishing, golfing, or just relaxing in nature.&nbsp; He was a member of Carthage Lake Club where he spent lots of time hanging out with friends and family, sharing stories and enjoying the outdoors.&nbsp; His lifelong dedication to bowling was reflected in numerous accomplishments and a cherished circle of friends.&nbsp; Dar was a fan of the St. Louis Cardinals, making many road trips to St. Louis with his son and friends.&nbsp;

He was an excellent cook and loved making food for his family, friends, and coworkers.&nbsp; On several occasions, he would make a gourmet meal for those working Thanksgiving at the hospital.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Darwin was a generous man and a proud father and grandfather. He loved spending time with his children and granddaughters, and it brought him great joy watching them grow up.&nbsp;Darwin is survived by his children, Adam Cooley and Lisa (Chad) Lambi; and his beloved granddaughters, Ella and Paige. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Gary Cooley.

In accordance with his wishes, cremation has been entrusted to Prugh Crematory. No services are scheduled at this time.

Born July 8, 2005, in West Burlington, she was the daughter of Daren and Amie McDaniels Orth. &nbsp; She was a 2024 graduate of Burlington Notre Dame High School and was enrolled to study nursing at Southeastern Community College. She had recently received her CNA Certificate. Kelsey had been working for Panera since she was 16 years old. She never liked getting up that early to go to work but she always enjoyed being there, she had built up quite a following of morning regulars who dined there and always greeted them with a smile. Kelsey was a vibrant and fearless young woman who brought light and joy to those around her. She was of Catholic faith and was a member of Divine Mercy Parish. She had a bold, spirited personality that showed in everything she did, whether taking selfies, or dancing and singing to her favorite songs - she fully embraced the moment. She loved expressing herself through tattoos and piercings and enjoyed tanning. Her beloved dog, Jack held a special place in her heart. She had a natural softness for animals of all kinds, showing them the same kindness and compassion she extended to everyone she met. Friends and family knew her as someone who was always kind and caring. She enjoyed the quiet focus of puzzles and fidget toys and found beauty in the simple things-especially butterflies and flowers. Her fearlessness, creativity, and gentle soul will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her. Vaughn L. Moore, 79, of West Burlington, died Monday, July 21, 2025, at home. Born December 16, 1945, in Ottumwa, Iowa, he was the son of Vaughn P. and Helen Elaine Moore.

He was a 1965 graduate of Ottumwa High School and served in the Army.

He married Patricia “Patty” Keen on June 12, 1965 in Ottumwa, she preceded him in death on July 23, 2021.

Vaughn began his working career helping paint houses and rooftops with his uncle.&nbsp; He then continued on with employment with the Atomic Energy Commission, First Miss, West Burlington Police Department., where he was known fondly to the kids as the bubble gum cop, Burlington Mobile Home Sales, Century Homes on Highway 61, Vista Bakery and finally as a volunteer for the 34 Truckstop.

He loved motorcycles, racing them as a teenager; bow fishing and hunting.&nbsp; But most importantly he was known to have a house that was a safe haven for all of his children and their friends, offering a place to stay and security for all.

Survivors include his children; Lester Moore and Vona (John) Vernoy; honorary daughters Melinda (Rick) Belville and Laura (Brian) Holt along with 15 foster children; 26 grandchildren; three great grand children and sister Renee Hartley.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Patty, two brothers Jerry Moore and Paul Moore, sister Sharon Lentner and a sister in infancy Patricia Lynn Moore.

According to his wishes, cremation has been entrusted to Lunning Chapel.&nbsp; There will be no services.&nbsp; If you feel inclined, the family has asked for a tree to be planted in his memory.

Donna Jo Anne Baxter, 99, of Stronghurst, Ill., passed away at 8:20 a.m. on her 99th birthday, July 22, 2025, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in West Burlington, Iowa.&nbsp;

Jo Anne was born July 22, 1926, in Bonaparte, Iowa, the daughter of Roger and Winona (Story) Hornbaker. On December 14, 1946, she married the love of her life, Harry A. Baxter, in Fort Madison, Iowa. He preceded her in death December 16, 1990.&nbsp; Jo Anne was raised and educated in Bonaparte, where she graduated as valedictorian of her class. Following high school, she received her teaching certificate from the former Parsons College in Fairfield, Iowa. She taught at a one room school in Van Buren County. After their marriage, she and Harry started their family and lived in Fort Madison, Iowa until they relocated to Stronghurst in 1961. She helped him run Baxter Progas where the family met many extraordinary people from the Hancock and Henderson County area. She always felt truly blessed to have raised a family and have had a business in this community. Jo Anne loved her Catholic faith, finding great peace in the celebration of the Mass and participating in the Sacraments. She was a teacher at heart and simply taught by the way she lived her life up until the day she went Home. Besides her faith, her greatest gift from God was her family,&nbsp; who very often filled her home with laughter. Throughout the years, her earthly home was a place of stability for many in good times and bad; to know her was to know that you were loved.&nbsp; Those left to miss her include her children: Cathy (Terry) Weiss of Highland Park, Illinois, Colette (Paul) Sopocy of Bourbonnais, Illinois, Christie (Terrance) Escorcia of Springfield, Illinois, Michelle McCollum of Media, Illinois, Renee Mowen of Springfield, Illinois, Mark Baxter of Burlington, Iowa, Julie (Mark) Burau of West Fargo, North Dakota; Eric Baxter of Burlington, Iowa, Paul Baxter of Stronghurst, Illinois and Galen (Jennifer) Baxter of Media, Illinois;&nbsp; 21 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren and one sister: Carol Ohlendorf of Muscatine, Iowa.&nbsp; Besides her husband, Harry, she was preceded in death by one daughter: Jan Carpenter; one granddaughter: Dr. Kerri Anne Mowen; one sister: Elaine Burkett and three brothers: Cecil, John and Gayle Hornbaker.&nbsp; Banks &amp; Beals Funeral Home of Stronghurst is assisting the family.&nbsp; A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:00 a.m. Friday, July 25, 2025, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, near Raritan, with Fr. Timothy Hepner as Celebrant. Burial will follow in Stronghurst Cemetery. No visitation is planned.&nbsp; A memorial fund has been established for the Henderson County Public Library or Oak Lane Nursing &amp; Rehab.&nbsp;

Donna Jo Anne Baxter

Betty L. Ward, 78, of Burlington, died Tuesday, July 22, 2025, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born April 5, 1947, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Clarence and Bertha Lack. She married Larry Scott. He he preceded her in death on August 17, 1992.&nbsp; She then married Raymond Ward on June 30, 2012, at the Unitarian Fellowship.

Betty worked at ParkView Care Center for several years until her retirement.

She loved oil painting and was an amazing artist.&nbsp; She loved playing bingo and for years she, along with Ray wintered in Texas and Betty became the entertainment committee for her retirement park.&nbsp; Above all things, her greatest joy was harassing “Hazel”.

She is survived by her husband Ray Ward; children, Roger Dean (Amanda), David Allen, Chadwick Daniel and Bradley Douglas (Wendy); stepchildren, Robert (Dana), Donald, Michelle (Frank), Heather, Chris (Felice) and Michael; several grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband Larry, stepdaughters Tammy and Tina, brother Richard and sister Dixie.

The graveside memorial service and burial for Betty will be 2:00 p.m. Monday, July 28th at Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery. Mr. Richard Johnson will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Des Moines County Humane Society.

Philip Lee “Phil” Getchell, 85, of rural West Burlington, died Monday, July 21, 2025, at his home surrounded by family.

Born February 7, 1940, in Mount Pleasant, Iowa, he was the son of Harold Wayne and Mary Evangeline Getchell.&nbsp; He was a 1958 graduate of Burlington High School.

He married Marjorie D. Stigge on September 19, 1959, at the Prairie Grove Church.

Phil was a lifelong farmer and for the past several years did so alongside his son.&nbsp; He worked for Modern Welding for 34 years, served as a Reserve Deputy for the Des Moines County Sheriff’s Department for 15 years, drove the school bus for Danville Schools for 11 years and worked at 34 Raceway for many years pumping fuel for cars.

He was a member of Peace Lutheran Church.

He enjoyed restoring antique tractors, hunting, fishing and of course farming.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Marjorie Getchell; son Dave (Jennifer) Getchell; daughter Kayleen (Brad) Mehaffy; four grandchildren, Damian (Jordan) Getchell, Chris (Erin) Mehaffy, Nick (Crystal) Mehaffy, Kimberly (Dylan) Graham, Shelby Tolle and Savannah Dowell; nine great grandchildren and brother Melvin (Judy) Getchell.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Wanda Waterman and Sharon Getchell and daughter-in-law Rosalie Getchell.

Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., Sunday, July 27th, at Lunning Chapel where the family will receive friends.&nbsp; The funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 28th at Peace Lutheran Church.&nbsp; Pastor James Zuehls will officiate.&nbsp; Burial will follow at Prairie Grove Cemetery, rural West Burlington.

Memorials have been established for Peace Lutheran Church and Prairie Grove Cemetery.

Kelli McLean, 20, of Davenport, died Friday, July 18, 2025, in Davenport. Born September 5, 2004, in Chicago, Ill., she was the daughter of Eunia Campbell. Kelli had previously worked for Target, YMCA, and a pet store in Davenport. She loved reading, drawing, and music. She was in a band throughout high school. She enjoyed helping people, loved her siblings and her family. Survivors include her mother, Eunia Campbell of Burlington; two sisters, Deasija Benton of Burlington, and Mykah Edwards of Chicago, Ill.; four brothers, Deshaun (Mayrssa) Cummings of Muscatine, Deiontae (Anastasia) Cummings of Cedar Rapids, Michael Edwards, and Makai Edwards; three nephews, Lyndon Cummings, Kai Cummings, and Knox Cummings; three nieces, Julianna Lloyd, Jayda Lloyd, and Janelle Lloyd; three aunts, Juliette, Lavencia, and Franshon; one uncle, Terrance; three cousins, Miacalla, Iris, and Lashonna; honorary grandmother, Connie Boyd; as well as many others. She was preceded in death by her maternal grandmother, Jeanette Campbell; maternal great-grandmother, Mary Campbell; and aunt, Serita Edwards. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
