Gwendolyn Barbagiovanni, 87, of Burlington, Iowa, died at her residence on Monday afternoon September 29, 2025.

Born on April 5, 1938, in Stronghurst, Illinois, she was the daughter of Cleophus Charles Corley Sr. and Alice (Hoyak) Corley.

&nbsp;Gwen was a graduate of Burlington High School. On February 6, 1981, at St. Paul Catholic Church, she married Santo L. “Sam” Barbagiovanni. He preceded her in death on January 21, 2015.

Gwen was a homemaker, a member of Divine Mercy Parish, and a past board member of The Salvation Army. She also enjoyed cross-stitching, reading (including history books), and crossword puzzles.

Survivors include; two daughters, Lana (Dr. Timothy) Anderson of Bristol, TN, and Susan Haynes of Burlington, Iowa, one son, R.K. “Kirk” Lucas of Lafayette, Ind.; twelve grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, and her loving cat Simba.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughter Karen Waldrop, two son-in-law’s, George Haynes and James Waldrop, great-grandson Tatum Ross, five sisters, and two brothers.

A special thank you to Sister Peggy Duffy, Sister Kathy Braun. Another special thank you to Susan Haynes, Brian Ross, and Julie Lucas, who were her caregivers for her in the last few years of her life, allowing her to stay in her home.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11 a.m. Friday, October 3, 2025, at St. Paul Catholic Church of Divine Mercy Parish with Father Jacob Greiner as the Celebrant. Interment will be held at Sacred Heart Cemetery.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

A memorial has been established for the Divine Mercy Parish.

Elizabeth Arlene “Betty” Jury,&nbsp;95, of River Valley Place, Fort Madison, Iowa (formerly of rural Farmington), passed away at 5:55 p.m. Monday, September 29, 2025, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in West Burlington, Iowa.

She was born on September 9, 1930, on the family farm in rural Farmington, the daughter of Grover and Hazel (Grimm) Rohdy. On September 4, 1949, she married Jewell E. “Bud” Jury in Primrose, Iowa. He preceded her in death on January 27, 2025.

She is survived by her children: Carol (Keith - dec.) Knight of Coromandel Valley, South Australia, James (Ann) Jury of Farmington, Iowa, Mary (Bob) Dodds of Montrose, Iowa, Joseph (Debbie) Jury of Ingalls, Kansas, Timothy (Janet) Jury of Kansas City, Missouri, Robert (Yvette) Jury of Iowa City, Iowa; twenty grandchildren; thirty-six great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; sister-in-law: Alice Rohdy and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband: Bud; son-in-law: Keith Knight; siblings: Ruth, Dale, Helen, Bob, Charles, Jeane and Don.

Betty was a 1948 graduate of Donnellson High School. Following high school she received normal school training. Before she and Bud were married, she worked at Sheaffer Pen Company and the Farmington Creamery. She was a member of the Sharon Presbyterian Church and the Presbyterian Women (PW). She taught Sunday School, Vacation Bible School and sang in the church choir. She was also a member of PEO, past president of the Harmony music boosters, a 4-H leader, Cub Scout den mother and American Red Cross volunteer. Betty enjoyed sewing, cooking, gardening, traveling and was dedicated to the family farm.

Friends may call after 12:00 noon, Friday, October 17, 2025, at Schmitz Funeral Home in Donnellson, where the family will receive friends from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.&nbsp;

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, October 18, 2025, at the Sharon Presbyterian Church in rural Farmington, with Pastor Katrina Bergman officiating.

Burial will be at Sharon Cemetery, rural Farmington.

Memorials have been established in her memory for Sharon Presbyterian Church or the American Red Cross.

Cheri Lynn Yaley Mayfield, 63, passed unexpectedly on August 7, 2025, in Stockholm,&nbsp;Sweden, while on a vacation with her husband. She was born on October 24, 1961, in Fort Madison, to James and Linda K. Yaley. Cheri grew up in Denmark, Iowa, and graduated from Fort Madison Senior High in 1980. After receiving her B.A. in Behavioral Sciences and Communication from Grace College, she went on to earn a Master’s in Biblical Counseling from&nbsp; Grace Theological Seminary. Cheri married David Mayfield on October 2, 1993, in the Jeanne Vail Chapel at Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill.&nbsp; &nbsp; After living in Dallas and Richardson, Texas, they moved to New York&nbsp; City in 1997, where they resided. &nbsp; Cheri, a Licensed Professional Counselor in Texas and New York, enjoyed a career in private and church counseling and as a customer agent for Delta Airlines.&nbsp; She was a member of Redeemer Church in New York City.

Cheri&nbsp; loved music and was actively involved in the choir and as a soloist at Trinity Presbyterian Church in Plano, Texas. She enjoyed traveling with her husband and parents to new places, cooking, and serving creative meals. She was a devout Christian with a generous spirit who showed kindness to all, coming home frequently to visit her family and friends. Cheri was a blessing to her husband, family, and friends as she assisted others,&nbsp; arranging and traveling to medical appointments, often sending health supplements as gifts. Cheri enriched the lives of all who knew and loved her and she will be greatly missed but present in our hearts.

Beverly Jean Griggs, age 87, of Washington, Iowa, passed away on Thursday, September 25, 2025, surrounded by her family at the United Presbyterian Home.

Beverly was born June 19, 1937, in Mount Pleasant, Iowa, the daughter of Clarence Elder Smith and Vertie Klopfenstein.&nbsp; She grew up in Mount Pleasant and graduated from Mount Pleasant High School in 1956.&nbsp; Beverly pursued an Associate of Science degree from Burlington Junior College and then attended Burlington Hospital School of Nursing, graduating from both in 1959.

On February 14, 1961, she married Allen Wayne Griggs.&nbsp; After the wedding they made their home farming in rural Washington, Iowa.&nbsp; Together they shared a loving marriage until her passing.&nbsp; She is survived by husband Allen.&nbsp; They raised four children, Cherry (Steve) Klein, Donald (Melody) Griggs, Ed (Susan) Griggs, and Faith (John Beckman) Griggs.&nbsp; Beverly was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother - cherishing her eight grandchildren – Ashley (Deepmoy) Ghosh, Cheyenne Griggs, Megan (Jonathan) Wiese, Nolan Griggs (Zoë Antoine), Dayton Griggs (Kelso Messerschmitt), Haley Griggs (fiancée Ryne Larson). Penelope York and Elliot York, and six great-grandchildren – Haddon Wiese, Judah Wiese, Aarav Ghosh, Owen Wiese, Aria Ghosh, and Knox Wiese.&nbsp;

Beverly dedicated her life to loving her family and caring for her community.&nbsp; She worked as an RN at Burlington Hospital, Henry County Memorial Hospital, Washington County Hospital, Halcyon House, REM, and Washington County Hospice.&nbsp; She later worked for Iowa Ag Statistics, Welcome Wagon, Curves, and Planned Parenthood.&nbsp; She was an “Avon lady” for many years. She was actively involved with her family and church activities as a 4-H leader, Sunday School teacher and volunteer for Public Health. She was also a Master Gardner that loved looking at flowers and watching for birds.

Her greatest joys came from simple acts of love – remembering friends’ and family’s days of celebration (all captured on her calendar that hung above the phone), gardening, weaving, and attending craft fairs with Allen, and traveling to see her children.&nbsp; Those who knew her will remember her kindness and compassion. A woman of deep faith, Beverly was a member of The United Methodist Church and The West Chester Community Church. &nbsp; A Celebration of Life will take place at a future date.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Patricia Winheim,&nbsp;79, of Keosauqua, passed away at 12:20 p.m. Monday, September 22, 2025, at the Keosauqua Health Center.

She was born on September 19, 1946, in Mason City, Iowa, the daughter of Richard and Carmen (Murphy) Dearing. She married George Winheim.

She is survived by her husband: George; son: Eric (Carrie) Winheim of Libertyville, Iowa; four grandchildren: Pearl, Gretta, Patrick (Samantha) Winheim, Christian Douthart and two great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Pat was a graduate of Fort Madison High School. She graduated with honors from the University of Iowa majoring in English and Spanish. She taught for fifty years at Harmony, Aquinas, Marquette and Holy Trinity High Schools. Pat was a champion quilter. She was very meticulous with her quilting creations and her pieces were highly appraised. Pat was known as a saint to her students, family and friends.

Her body has been entrusted to the crematory of Schmitz Funeral Home for cremation.

A private family service will be held at a later date.

Patricia Winheim

Gladys Eileen Huston, 90, of LaHarpe, Illinois, passed away at 5:36 a.m. Thursday, September 25, 2025 at Wesley Village in Macomb, Illinois.

She was born June 27, 1935 in LaHarpe, the daughter of Loyal and Hazel (Alexander) Bennett. Gladys was a 1953 graduate of LaHarpe High School. On December 19, 1954, she married Alfred Huston in LaHarpe.

Earlier in life, Gladys worked for Hasten’s News Stand in LaHarpe before beginning a secretarial career. Over the course of her life she was employed by many local businesses and organizations, including the LaHarpe Christian Church, Poulter’s Flower Shop, Fred Gibb Chevrolet, LaHarpe-Davier Health Care Center and their family business, Town &amp; Country Services. &nbsp;

Gladys was a devoted Christian. As a member of the LaHarpe Christian Church and the Burnside Christian Church, she took an active role within her church family. She served with the Go Ye Mission Group, taught Sunday School, assisted with Vacation Bible School, cooked for church dinners and events and played piano. She and Alfred were also founding members of the West Burlington Christian Church. They made several mission trips with the Mexico Missions Group; helping build homes and establishing food programs for the locals. Most of all, Gladys loved helping people and spending time with her family.

She is survived by her husband of 70 years, Alfred; one daughter, Debbie (Brad) Hunt of Macomb, Illinois; one son: Rex (Teresa) Huston of LaHarpe; nine grandchildren: Colby (Shey) Hunt, Colleen (Joey) Woodruff, Bobi (Grant) James, AJ (Jamie) Huston, Ty (Rachel) Huston, Clay (Christina) Huston, Boni (Dillon) Garner, Tucker (Shelby) Huston and Trace (Becca) Huston; 24 great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter on the way.

Gladys was preceded in death by her parents, her brother and sister-in-law: Kenneth and Shirley Bennett, and one sister in infancy: Gail.

Gladys’ funeral service with be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, October 3, 2025, at the Banks &amp; Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe, with Pastor Nate McCarter and Pastor Mark Nichols officiating. Burial will follow at the LaHarpe Cemetery.

Prior to the service, the family will receive from 9:30 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Gregory D. Yaley, 71, of Dallas City, Illinois, passed away Friday, September 26, 2025 at his home.&nbsp;

Greg was born September 16, 1954 in Ft. Madison, Iowa, the son of Darrel and Norma Jean (Wenke) Yaley. On July 29, 1978 he married Tammy Bonham in Ft. Madison. She survives.&nbsp;

Greg was a 1972 graduate of Ft. Madison High School. After high school, he was employed for a short time as a welder for Fruehauf Inc. in Ft. Madison. He spent most of his life as an Engineer with the Sante Fe Railroad and later, Burlington Northern Railroad, retiring after 41 years. He took great pride in providing for his family.

Mr. Yaley enjoyed being outdoors, especially riding his motorcycle, fishing, hunting, shooting guns and bows. He was a member of the Victory Faith Church in Ft. Madison and the River of Life Fellowship Church in Dallas City.

Besides his wife, Tammy, survivors include two children: Dillon (Cheryl) Yaley of Quincy and Ashley (Nicholas) Milton of Warrensburg, Missouri; four grandchildren: Gabriel and Isaac Yaley and Nevaeh and Zayden Cornick; two step-grandchildren: Victoria and Lucas Milton and two brothers: Bill (Chris) Yaley of Ft. Madison and Scott (Frannie) Yaley of Montrose.

John Edward Tanner, 83, of LaHarpe, Illinois, formerly of Niota, Illinois, passed away Friday, September 26, 2025, at his home.

John was born January 30, 1942 in Fort Madison, Iowa, the son of John Ernest and Leona Inez (Turner) Tanner.&nbsp;

Mr. Tanner was a graduate of Dallas City High School. He worked as Iron Worker with the Local 577 for many years. Later, he was employed with Fruehauf Inc. in Ft. Madison, where he retired from as a Supervisor. John enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, fishing, mushrooming and was an avid knife collector.&nbsp;

Survivors include four children: Johanna Bradford of Hamilton, Illinois, Tracey Bryant of Dallas City, John Joe Tanner of Dallas City and Libby Tanner of North Liberty; twelve grandchildren: Cody Fitz, Michael Bradford, Dylan Bryant, Danyale Bryant, Kyle Tanner, Kelsey Haddix, Tyler Tanner, Aidyn Meyer, Dakota Vaughan, Dalton Vaughan and Chase Vaughan; 10 great-grandchildren and three sisters: Sally (Butch) Partin of Winchester, Tennessee, Pam (David) Carpenter of LaHarpe and Natalie (Jim) Perry of Effingham, Illinois.&nbsp;

He was preceded in death by his parents and one daughter: Nikki Vaughan. &nbsp;

John Edward Tanner

Patricia “Pat” A. Shaffer, 86, of Burlington, Iowa, died Wednesday, September 24, 2025, at her home.

Born on April 10, 1939, in Disco, Illinois, she was the daughter of Henry and Della (Sell) Cole. On December 20, 1959, she married Marion R. Shaffer. He preceded her in death on December 9, 2020.

Pat worked for IRC until it closed. She then worked for and retired from the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant. After retirement she drove for the railroad transporting their employees. Pat was a member of Grace United Methodist Church. She loved to crochet, cross stitch, needle point and sew. Pat was especially good at sewing baby clothing. She also enjoyed making baby blankets for the local hospital NIC Units. Most of all Pat loved to serve people.

She is survived by two sons: Mark (Teresa) Shaffer and David (Annette) Shaffer all of Burlington; six grandchildren and several great grandchildren. Also surviving is one sister Greeta Walters.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and many brothers and sisters.

Per her wishes cremation has been entrusted and accorded to the care of Lunning Chapel.

A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday October 19, 2025, at Burlington Memorial Park with Rev. Tamara Wirt officiating.

A memorial has been established in her memory for Grace United Methodist Church.

Patricia Shaffer

After a long and rewarding life filled with service, travel, good health and adventure, Olive Sullivan, 95, died September 26, 2025 at Southeast Iowa Hospice House.

Born June 16, 1930 in Morrowville, Kan. and raised on a farm there during the Great Depression, Olive came to Burlington in 1955 shortly after graduating from Kansas State University to pursue a journalism career at the Burlington Hawkeye Gazette. As a 25-year-old reporter, she had the opportunity to interview Eleanor Roosevelt before advancing to editor of what was then known as the women’s pages. She later worked for the Area Education Agency as a public relations specialist, but continued to write for the paper as a featured columnist for decades.

Olive believed in service to others and was actively involved in numerous organizations in the Burlington area. She was a member of the Altrusa Club, League of Women Voters, Shining Trail Girl Scout Council, YWCA, the Shakespeare Club, local chapters of the UN and NAACP, P.E.O., King’s Daughters, the Des Moines County planning commission, Geode RC &amp; D, CRISP, the Red Cross, Southeast Iowa Symphony, Players Workshop, Des Moines County Historical Society and Des Moines County Democrats. She was on the Burlington Sesquicentennial Board and in her free time, delivered meals and books for the area agency on aging. She was also a dedicated member of Grace United Methodist Church.

Love of adventure and travel took Olive all over the globe and she enjoyed exchanging and sharing ideas with people of different cultures, from Alaska to Morocco to the Great Barrier Reef. One of her favorite places to visit was Lake Chautauqua in Upstate New York where she traveled on various occasions with the King’s Daughters What-So-Ever Circle.

Olive is survived by her children: Gail Sullivan of New York City and Benne Sullivan of Watertown, S.D.; several nieces and nephews, and many friends, 110 of whom attended her 95th birthday party in June. She was preceded in death by her husband LeRoy, her three siblings, and her beloved 18-year-old kitty Mickie.

Olive fully and fearlessly embraced life with a smile, an upbeat attitude and encouraging words for everyone, touching the lives of many people. She enjoyed sharing her wealth of knowledge about the community and sought to make the world a better and more compassionate place at every opportunity.

A celebration of Olive’s life will be held at a future date in conjunction with several of the organizations she was passionate about. Memorials may be sent to the Des Moines County Humane Society, PAW Animal Shelter in Fort Madison or Grace United Methodist Church.

He passed on May 21, 2005. Ruth was a registered nurse in Burlington and served in the Cadet Nurse Corp during WWII at the Schick Army Hospital in Clinton. Following her nursing career she stayed at home to help raise her growing family. She was a devoted member of Parkside First Baptist Church. Ruth found joy in many quiet pursuits throughout her life. She had a talent for needlework and created many beautiful pieces over the years. She was a woman of faith who spent much time reading her Bible and drawing strength from its words. Ruth also enjoyed cooking for her family, tending to her garden, and appreciating the beauty of nature. Bird watching was a favorite pastime, and she took comfort in observing and identifying the many species that visited her yard. Survivors include her children, Joyce (Robert) Schlote of Silverdale, Wash., Thomas (Kathy) Wagner of Bettendorf, James (Judy) Wagner of Bloomington, Ind., Daniel Wagner of Burlington, Catherine (Randy) Wagner-Aronson of Cooper City, Fla.; seven grandchildren; many great and great-great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Ruth Virginia Wagner

R. Paul Steffensmeier, 96, of the St. Paul/Houghton area, passed away at 10:03 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2025, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.

He was born on Oct. 8, 1928, in St. Paul, Iowa, the eleventh child of Ben and Rose Umthum Steffensmeier. On Sept. 4, 1954, he married Phyllis Denning.

Survivors include his wife: Phyllis; children: Penny (Larry) Walter of Shawnee, Kansas, Rus (Bev) Steffensmeier of Houghton, Iowa, Rhonda Peseau of Arlington, Washington, Ritch Steffensmeier of Overland Park, Kansas; eleven grandchildren: Kurt (Hallie) Steffensmeier, Bobbi (Ryan) Kruse, Karla (Lynn) Williams, Austin (Tiffany) Walter, Russell Walter, Allison Walter, Hannah (Ilya) Glazunoy, Will Peseau, Jade (Daniel) Johnson, Halle Steffensmeier, Breck Steffensmeier and ten great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Pam on Jan. 1, 1974, and one son at birth.

Paul was very proud to be a graduate of the first high school graduating class of St. James School in St. Paul. He was a lifelong resident of the St. Paul - Houghton area and was Mayor of St. Paul in 1956. He was also a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church and the Houghton Knights of Columbus. Farming and feeding cattle were his lifelong work which he thoroughly enjoyed. Paul was a Pioneer Seed dealer for twenty-two years. He enjoyed playing cards, especially Bridge and researching genealogy. He was an avid St. Louis Cardinal and Iowa Hawkeye fan.

His body has been entrusted to the crematory of Schmitz Funeral Home for cremation.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 11, 2025, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church with Father Dan Dorau as celebrant.

Burial will be held at St. John’s Cemetery in Houghton.

R. Paul Steffensmeier

Randy Wayne "Dog" Hiland, 67, of Burlington, passed away unexpectedly Sunday, Sept. 21, 2025, at his home. He was born Dec. 3, 1957, in Joliet, Ill., and was the son of Wayne and Sylvia Hiland.

In 2013, Randy met the love of his life, Renee Sandy, and they quickly became inseparable. Together, the two enjoyed time with family and friends, spoiling Cubby, riding, gardening, and just being with one another.

As a young adult, Randy worked as a farm hand and then as an autobody tech. Later, he was employed by The Roofing Company, owned by friend, Doug Fenton, and lastly, by Spike’s Chain Link, owned by friend, Ronnie Spiker.

Randy worked hard, played hard, and was always ready for a good time. He was a motorcycle enthusiast; his favorite pastime was riding. He also enjoyed shooting pool, golfing, bowling, fishing, hunting, collecting HO scale model trains, painting model trains and scenery, building model airplanes, keeping saltwater fish, and refurbishing classic cars. He was a fan of racing, the Bears, and the Cubs.

Randy was a longtime member of A.B.A.T.E. of Iowa District 18. He was instrumental in establishing, planning, and fundraising for the annual A.B.A.T.E. Hospice Ride and also took an active role in other fundraising efforts for various motorcycle poker runs and non-profit organizations.

Randy was a social butterfly and was well known in the Burlington area. He was fun loving with a big personality. He had a charitable spirit that inspired others and a huge heart that made him easy to love. Randy is treasured by many and will be deeply missed.

He is survived and missed by his daughter, Shannon (Ryan) O’Donnell; mother, Sylvia Hiland; siblings, Donna (Jon) Miller, Debbie Bell, and Ryan (Connie) Hiland; sister-in-law, Gloria Hiland; many nieces and nephews; and his close friend, John Fageol.

He was preceded in death by his father; wife, Renee Sandy; brother, Ron Hiland; and brother-in-law, Ernie Bell.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Friday, September 26, at Lunning Chapel. The funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, September 27, at Lunning Chapel.

Arlene Sayre, 87, of Burlington, died Tuesday, September 16, 2025, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in West Burlington.

Born February 8, 1938, in Wooster, Ohio, she was the daughter of Kyle and Lillian Ora Zeppernick Sayre but was raised by her grandparents.&nbsp;

Arlene had a wide array of talents. In her lifetime, she worked as a bartender, transported inmates for correctional facilities, helped bring Hobby Lobby to Burlington and was a Private Investigator. Most people would remember her from her business, where she made memory bears or baked goods that she would sell at the farmers market.&nbsp;

She belonged to Bridges Community. Arlene enjoyed sewing, crocheting and was always baking.&nbsp;

Survivors include her granddaughter, whom she raised, &nbsp;Kira Marie Riley Sayre, and her friend Mackenzie; her children included daughter, Rita Hartley of Princeville, Ill.; brother, Tom Sayre; and a host of friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, daughter, Tammie Sherrill, son, Scott Conrad and great-great granddaughter, Adalayne Faith Joy Sayre.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh Crematory.

A memorial has been established for her final expenses.&nbsp;

Larry D. Turley, 88, of Burlington, died Saturday, September 20, 2025, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in West Burlington.

Born June 19, 1937, in Burlington, Iowa, he was the son of Donald and Elsie Turley.

He married Bonnie Fisher, they later divorced. He then married Linda Kemp on October 28, 1977.

Larry owned and operated Turley’s Menswear in Westland Mall for several years. Before that he worked at Sears Roebuck downtown. After retirement, he began assisting at Lunning Chapel where he helped countless families. His lifelong career in customer service was apparent in everything he did, and he had a knack for making people laugh and smile. He truly, honestly, did not know a stranger.

He was a member of Community of Christ where he served as an Elder and previously as a Pastor for many years.

Larry was no stranger to volunteering, he donated his time and talents by serving on many area boards including the Chamber of Commerce, Civic Music, United Way, West Burlington Bank, Aspen Grove Cemetery, and served as past president for Burlington Golf Club, Blackhawk Booster Club, Burlington Kiwanis and Burlington Steamboat Days.

Larry LOVED golf, playing golf, watching golf, participating in golf tournaments, did we mention he loved golf? Second to golfing, and only slightly, would be his love for SCC Blackhawk Basketball, where he was a fixture at all the home games, and even traveling to away games. In Larry’s words, “If you can’t find me at Lunning’s, playing golf, at the Burlington Golf Club or at an SCC Basketball game, I left town.”

He is survived by his wife and constant companion, Linda Turley of Burlington; four children, Don (Anne) Turley of Birmingham, Alabama, Brad (Pam) Turley of Nashville, Tennessee, Diane (Robert) Bolen of Quincy, Illinois and Teresa Stutsman of Long Beach, California; 11 grandchildren, Toby, Travis, Nick, Nathan, Lee, Amanda, Laura, Tara, Cassie, Joey and Matt; several great grandchildren; two sisters, Becky (Ken) Witte of Fayetteville, Arkansas and Donna (Bob) Dahl of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma; special nephew Zachery Walker; nieces and nephews and brother-in-law Dean (Maurene) Kemp.

He was preceded in death by his parents, niece Debbie Prox and brothers-in-law Butch Prox and Alan Kemp.

Visitation will be held from 2:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. Sunday, September 28th at Lunning Chapel where the family will receive friends.

The funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, September 29th at Lunning Chapel. Mr. Jerry Wiemann will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established for Community of Christ, Burlington Kiwanis or the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House.

According to his wishes, cremation will be accorded following the funeral services. A private burial will be held in Aspen Grove Cemetery.

Following his passing, Michael was able to give the gift of life through organ donation. Born Feb.&nbsp; 18, 1971, in Fort Dodge, he was the son of Harlan and Claudia Chipman Neumann. On July 20, 2002, he married Jennifer Swamberger in Cedar Falls.&nbsp; He graduated high school in Manson, Iowa and then earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts at the University of Northern Iowa. Michael had worked for Sherwood Company since 2004. He was a gifted artist who found joy in creating, whether through his artwork or strumming his guitar. Some of his favorite moments were the simple ones - sitting back with a good cup of coffee, listening to music or a podcast, or heading out for a ride on his motorcycle. Michael loved spending time doing anything with his family, especially playing catch with his son and practicing baseball or watching his daughter practice dance routines and cheers. Over time, he even became a proud Chicago Cubs fan. He loved nothing more than sharing “adventures” with his family, whether it was a big road trip or just piling in the car to see where the day would take them. James Trickler, age 80, of Lomax, died Monday, Sept. 1, 2025, at the OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria.

Born June 5, 1945, in St. Joseph, Mo., he was the son of Ralph and Faye Smith Trickler.

James worked at the Case Corporation in Burlington for over 30 years and eventually retired from the company. &nbsp;He was a proud union member UAW Local 807.

James was always on the move and spent a lot of time traveling - often down to Florida where he loved the water. &nbsp;He was very hardworking and enjoyed building things. He was happiest when he was on the river, fishing, boating or jet skiing. &nbsp;James had a good sense of humor and enjoyed playing tricks on people, especially around Halloween. &nbsp;He was a good cook and could make a great pot of chili or lasagna.

Survivors include his children, Mike Trickler and Brenda Trickler; step-children Gregg Kerby, Kelly Schulz and Julie Lindeen; grandchildren, Trevor (Samantha) Johnson, Amber Fuchs, Sable Trickler, and Addison Trickler; five step grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; sister, Sharon (Lester) Hicks; sister-in-law, Bonnie Trickler; nieces, Jennifer Hicks and Kristina Hicks; nephews, Curtis Trickler and Christopher Trickler.

James Trickler

Dean Kurt Shoemaker, 64, of Winfield, formerly of LaHarpe, Ill., passed away at 10:35 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 18, 2025, at the Washington County Hospital &amp; Clinics, Washington, Iowa.

Dean was born Aug. 20, 1961 in LaHarpe, the son of Frank and Naomi F. Spainhower Shoemaker Sr. He was a 1979 graduate of LaHarpe High School. Following high school, he began working construction for Mynatt Construction in LaHarpe, learning many tools of the trade. He could build or fix anything. Dean also attended Montana School of Taxidermy and Tanning and opened Prairie State Custom Tanning when he returned. Later, he worked on various bridge crews, including Hillyer Construction, Macomb, Illinois.

Survivors include one daughter: Lindy Finke of Winfield; two grandsons: Gannon and Jackson; six siblings: Frank (Annette) Shoemaker Jr. of Wheaton, Ill., Lindsay (Debbie) Shoemaker of LaHarpe, Paula (Rob) Blythe of Dallas City, Marvin Shoemaker of Charleston, South Carolina, Ken Shoemaker of LaHarpe and Reva Jones of Los Angeles, California and numerous nieces and nephews.&nbsp;

He was preceded in death by his parents.&nbsp;

Cremation has been entrusted to Banks &amp; Beals Funeral Home of LaHarpe.

Dean Kurt Shoemaker, 64, of Winfield, formerly of LaHarpe, Ill., passed away at 10:35 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 18, 2025, at the Washington County Hospital &amp; Clinics, Washington, Iowa.Dean was born Aug. 20, 1961 in LaHarpe, the son of Frank and Naomi F. Spainhower Shoemaker Sr. He was a 1979 graduate of LaHarpe High School. Following high school, he began working construction for Mynatt Construction in LaHarpe, learning many tools of the trade. He could build or fix anything. Dean also attended Montana School of Taxidermy and Tanning and opened Prairie State Custom Tanning when he returned. Darin Lee Tansey, 50, of Miami Beach, Florida, formerly of Burlington, Iowa, died Tuesday, September 9, 2025, at his home.

Born February 16, 1975, in Burlington, Iowa, he was the son of Gary and Patricia Tansey.

He was a 1993 graduate of Burlington High School and earned his bachelor’s degree in Public Communications, in addition to two minors in Business Management and Psychology.

Darin was a distinguished real estate professional and was one of the nation’s top-performing agents. He owned and operated The Darin Tansey Group, affiliated with Douglas Elliman Real Estate in Miami Beach, Florida. He was known for his tireless energy and gift for building lasting relationships.

Darin enjoyed traveling, golfing, boating, and drinking fine red wine. He was admired for his integrity, generosity, tenacity and ability to make everyone feel seen and valued, whether mentoring his team, or sharing unforgettable moments with family and friends. Darin had a reputation as a trusted advisor and friend to many. Excellence was the standard Darin brought to every endeavor, no matter how great or small. His natural warmth, beaming smile, and genuine care for others left a lasting impression on everyone he met.

He is survived by one brother Jerry (Sammie) Tansey of Des Moines, Iowa; niece Aubrey Tansey and nephew Oliver Tansey both of Des Moines, Iowa; half-sister Lisa Walsh-Kerns of Burlington; aunts, uncles, and several cousins and his goddaughter Peyton.

He was preceded in death by his parents and maternal and paternal grandparents.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, September 24 at Lunning Chapel where the family will receive friends.

The funeral service will be 11 a.m. Thursday, September 25 at Lunning Chapel. Pastor Kendall Adams will officiate. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.

Memorials have been established for the St. Jude Children’s Hospital and the Ronald McDonald House.

Betty Jean Dewein, 98, of West Point, Iowa, died Wednesday evening, Sept. 17, 2025, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House.

Born on April 27, 1927, in Cairo, Iowa, she was the daughter of Charles T. and Effie M. Nelson McCune. On Feb. 22, 1947, at Grace United Methodist Church in Burlington, she married William G. Dewein. He preceded her in death on Dec. 3, 2010.

Betty was a graduate of Sperry High School, was a homemaker, and helped her husband on the farm. She enjoyed canning, working in the garden, sewing, tending to her chickens, small animals, and her dogs.

Survivors include, one nephew, Kenneth (Dieu) McCune of Belle Chasse, Louisiana, one niece, Nancy Harvey of Colorado Springs, Colorado; great nieces and nephews, including David Roe of Muscatine; several cousins and special friends Kevin and Laurie Riddle of Denmark, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother, niece Sandra Roe, and nephew Joe Harvey.

The funeral service for Betty Jean Dewein will be 2 p.m. Monday, Sept. 22, 2025, at the Lunning Chapel, with the Rev. David Mixon officiating, and interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.

Memorials have been established for P.A.W.S. of Ft. Madison and the Denmark Rescue Squad.

Dilts, 79, of Burlington, died Friday, Sept. 19, 2025, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center Hospice House in West Burlington.Born on April 2, 1946, in Monmouth, Ill., she was the daughter of M. Roger and Grace Ketchum Downes. On June 3, 1994, in Burlington, Iowa, she married Richard Dilts. He preceded her in death on Nov. 26, 2008.Marie graduated in the class of 1964 from Union High School in Biggsville, Ill. She attended and graduated from Burlington Business College. She was a member of Parkside Baptist Church. Marie enjoyed volunteering at Klein Center, and previously at Head Start, Burlington Medical Center, and Hope Haven Area Development Center. In her free time, she enjoyed baking, drawing, and doing arts and crafts, especially liquid embroidery. She also enjoyed word searches, playing bingo, listening to old country and gospel music, and watching a good old western show, especially a western with John Wayne. She was talented at writing poetry, which she loved to do. She was also a major St. Louis Cardinals fan. Marie had a green thumb and loved her houseplants. Most of all, Marie loved to take time out of her day and read a good mystery book. However, she loved taking the time to read her Bible the most.Marie is survived by her daughter Stephanie McCammon; four grandchildren: Jazmine (Zach) Metzger, Jordan Crowe, Jamie (Kaidon Hamric) McCammon and Sabrina McCammon; great grandson Kaysen Hamric; sister Bonnie Downes and nephew Jason Hummell. Also surviving is a very special friend, Donald “Marty” Martin.She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two sisters: Elaine Downes and Jane Hummell and her precious little dog Mitzi Sue.The funeral service for Marie will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 26, 2025, at Lunning Chapel. The visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 25, 2025, at Lunning Chapel, where the family will meet with friends.
