Nancy Ann Zippe, 66, of Burlington, died Friday, Feb. 23, 2024, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in West Burlington.

Born Jan. 6, 1958, in Burlington, Iowa, she was the daughter of Lester and Mary (Kistner) Howard Zippe.

Nancy was a graduate of Burlington High School and Dayton’s School of Hair Design.

She loved being outdoors, gardening, planting flowers, going to the river, mushroom hunting, bonfires, wildlife, puzzles and cooking, especially for the holidays.

Anyone that knew Nancy, knew that she loved her family dearly.

Survivors include her two children; Nicholas Burch and Teri (Damian) Cummins both of Cedar Rapids; six grandchildren, Jayden, Abrianna, Courtney, Chase, Emma and Eli; two great grandchildren, Zariah and Zacari; three brothers, Joseph Zippe, James Howard and Clarence “Herky” Howard and several nieces nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her maternal and paternal grandparents, her parents and three brothers, Martin Zippe, Clifford “Keith” Howard and William Howard Jr.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Lunning Chapel.

Ingeborg “Ing” Louise Zaiser, 98, of Burlington, died Monday, Feb. 26, 2024, at Oakview Nursing and Rehab Center.

Born June 4, 1925 in Burlington, she was the daughter of Carl A. and Auguste Mangl Kalkbrenner.

Ing graduated from Burlington High School and Burlington College of Commerce, Secretarial. On Sept. 27, 1947, she married Mark F. “Mike” Zaiser at St. Paul United Church of Christ. He died Jan. 21, 2006.

Ing worked for Northwest Bell and was a teacher’s aide at Washington School. Her primary focus was being a homemaker for her family. She enjoyed solving crossword puzzles and watching Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune. She was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan.

Ing was a member of St. Paul United Church of Christ in West Burlington. She was involved with women’s fellowship and teaching Sunday School. She was a seamstress and was a member of the Happy Go Lucky Sewing Club and formerly involved with the fireman auxiliary. She was very political minded and worked many years at the polls. She was involved in boy scouts and girl scouts. She was a grandmother to all, not just her own. Ing enjoyed spending time with family, going on mystery trips and kept in touch with her family in Germany and was lucky enough to visit. She had friends of all ages! Enjoyed sending notes and cards, and making loving phone calls.

Survivors include her children Annette Vincent, Danny (Dawn) Zaiser and Victoria (Dusty) Thye all of Burlington; grandchildren Bill, Mindy, Riley, Trey, Briar, Andrew, Hannah, Brody, Bryan, Staci and Shannon; fourteen great grandchildren and two on the way and one niece and several nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son Mike and brother Carl Kalkbrenner, sister Rosemary Scarff.

The funeral for Ing will be 1 p.m. Friday, March 1, 2024 at Lunning Chapel with Reverend Ned Fry officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.

A memorial has been established for St. Paul United Church of Christ.

Mitchell Scott “Mitch” Lowe, 65, of Burlington, died Sunday, Feb. 2024 at the University of Iowa.

Born Feb. 28, 1958 in Hannibal, Mo., he was the son of Cecil Raymond and Jo Ann Yargus Lowe.

Mitch was a graduate of Burlington High School in 1976. He was a department manager at Lowe’s for many years. He attended Burlington First Church of the Nazarene. He enjoyed television shows, loved music, especially the oldies and The Carpenters. He was an animal lover and enjoyed dog sitting for his family members. Mitch loved his family and would do anything for them at any time and wouldn’t expect anything in return. He was truly loved by all his family and will be deeply missed.

Survivors include his mother, Jo Ann Lowe; brothers Craig Lowe and Eric (Nancy) Lowe and sister April (Ed) Budzyn and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents and father, Cecil.

The funeral for Mitch will be 11:30 a.m., Thursday, Feb. 29, 2024 at Burlington First Church of the Nazarene with Pastor Jeff Alexander officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

A memorial has been established for the Des Moines County Humane Society.

Chuck Buck, 34, of Burlington, died Monday, Feb. &nbsp;19, 2024.

Born July 3, 1989, in Mount Pleasant, he was the son of Kevin Bruce Buck and Kim Heinrich Howell.

He attended West Burlington High School.&nbsp;

He worked as a Telebelt Operator at Precision Material Placement and previously at Ideal Ready Mix.

Charlie, aka "Chuck Buck" could light up a room as soon as he walked in. His infectious smile, bear hugs, and luscious locks (as he called his hair) were his trademarks. You never knew what he might be driving, but it was generally covered in mud and lucky to be running! &nbsp;He loved his friends and family BIG, especially the nieces and nephews. They all loved their Uncle Chuck. &nbsp;His "fur loaf" Bo was usually by his side chilling on the couch or in bed sharing chicken nuggies. There will never be another CMFB!

Survivors include father and step-mother, Kevin Buck and Tina Jo Buck; mother and step-father, Kim and Joe Howell; siblings Luke Dunham (Katia) of Burlington, Levi Dunham (Abby) of Burlington, Jacob Howell (Kristin) of Cuba, Ill., Dalton Howell of Burlington, Keely Douglas (Danny) of Fort Madison, and Kody Duncan (Chelsea) of Fort Madison, nieces and nephews: Bennet Duncan, Greyson, Bryson, and Kohen Duncan, Brixley Dunham and Beckett Dunham..

Chuck Buck

Louis Alexander Trumbull was born on April 29, 2006, at Great River Medical Center in Burlington Iowa to Amber Schertz; with his Aunt Sis and his Yaya present in the room for his birth.&nbsp; He was raised the majority of his life by Casandra Schertz (Sis) and Angela 'Hayburn' Schertz (Jo). He grew up at his home with his two brothers, Jacob Trumbull and Michael (Mike) Schertz, with frequent visits and family vacations with his sisters, Erica ‘Cline’ Trumbull and Claire Lafferty.

Louis flourished at so many things. He’s had many hobbies and things he enjoyed doing throughout his life, but his love for animals and his kind heart have never changed. At a young age, Louis had a grave fear of heights. After deciding to push his fears and get on a roller coaster that went upside-down at Silver Dollar City, his love for thrills grew. He enjoyed zip lining, roller coasters, rock climbing (he only had a chance to do it indoors), biking on trails, playing his XBox, hanging out with friends, building a fort with his buddies, fishing, boating, drawing (when he was little), among other things.&nbsp;

Although he didn’t like to help much with home improvement projects at home (except for the demolition part), he still had a love for construction. Construction was his career focus with the National Guard. He was set to go to basic training June 5 after he graduated High School this year. He also took shop classes at BHS, where his teacher reported at conferences that Louis had enough background knowledge that he would go around helping other students.&nbsp;

Louis was an amazing teacher, not just in class, but anywhere with anyone that he felt he could share his knowledge with and give pointers to. He also had a natural ability when it came to caring for and showing love for younger kids. The attention he gave them and the way their little faces lit up when they saw him was so heartwarming. He was looking forward to being an uncle this summer, as his brother Jacob is expecting a little boy, Kai Matthew Trumbull. Louis was also excited about his role as a Godfather to his cousin’s baby girl Zariyah Mae Hill, due to arrive this summer also. His little sister Claire adored him, and was always sad to see him leave, so he would just hold her against his chest to comfort her. He had two other younger siblings that he was amazing with also, Jace and Makayla Reynolds.&nbsp;

Louis meant so much to so many people. He enjoyed cooking with his Yaya (Grandma Darla Schertz). He found his love for Jacuzzi tubs and espresso during his time with his Opa Mike (Grandpa Michael Schertz). He had fun hunting for snakes with his Oma (Great Grandma Jenny Cline). He enjoyed working on cars with his Grandpa Kenny (Kenneth Reynolds). He found joy in sending and receiving messages from his Grandma Julie (Julie Keeler).&nbsp;

Greeting him at Heaven’s gates, I’m sure were his Great Grandparents Marilee and Clarence Eastman and Harvey Cline.&nbsp;

Louis touched a lot of lives throughout his short 17 years on Earth. He left us Monday, Feb. &nbsp;19, 2024, doing something he enjoyed; zoning out to his favorite play list while jogging to get his endurance up for basic training. Cardio was not his favorite, but he was dedicated. He meant a lot to a lot of people and we are all blessed to have been able to have had him in our lives. He will forever be missed! Til we meet again! We love you dearly Louis Alexander!

Louis would not want to participate in any of this if he had a choice. “Not particularly,” would have been his response to it. So in our last attempts to give him what he would have wanted, he’s not going to be made to show up, as his body will not be present in any form for his celebration of life. Everyone is encouraged to ditch the formal wear and just wear a hoodie or something else casual, as that’s what he preferred to wear.

Louis Alexander Trumbull

Birgit Brissey, 63, of West Burlington, died Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2024, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in West Burlington.

Born Sept. 13, 1960, in Frankenthal, Germany, she was the daughter of Anneliese Schmitt Weiler. She came to the United States when she was two years old.

Birgit was a Paralegal for Des Moines County for 27 years until her retirement in 2023.

She loved traveling to the beach and sea turtles. She was a sports fanatic, and loved watching all sports and most importantly her grandsons’ activities. She enjoyed playing darts, and participated in many dart leagues along with her friend Skeeter.

She is survived by her two daughters; Heather (Brandon) Rich and Danielle (Darien) Brissey; grandsons, Jason, Kai, Cohen and Oziyah; aunt Ruth Hoffman and cousin Brent (Sarah) Maxwell and their children Brenden and Michaela.

She was preceded in death by her mother Anneliese and aunt Inge Nickel.

The memorial funeral service for Birgit will be 4 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 27 at Lunning Chapel. The family requests all who attend wear bright colored clothing.

A memorial has been established for the Sea Turtle Conservation Fund.

According to her wishes, cremation has been accorded and entrusted to the care of Lunning Chapel.

Birgit Brissey

Mary Ann Krekel, 92, of Burlington, died Monday, Feb. 19 at Klein Center, following a journey with dementia. Mary Ann was born in Burlington on Dec. 17, 1931 to Albert and Helen Zaiser Champagne. 

She graduated from Burlington High School, class of 1949. Mary Ann met Jim Krekel on a blind date, and they were married on July 25, 1953. They enjoyed forty-eight years of loving marriage until Jim died on June 15, 2001.&nbsp;

Mary Ann enjoyed working at Dr. Hahn's dental office, but then happily took on her role as wife and mother. She said she always wanted a large family. And she did, raising their six children in a home filled with love and laughter.

Mary Ann was a Girl Scout leader at St. John's School as well as active in the PTA. She spent many years volunteering her time baking and then selling refreshments every Tuesday at the Knights of Columbus BINGO. She also served for many years with the Knights of Columbus Ladies Auxiliary as well as the Funeral Ladies Luncheon group at St. John's Catholic Church.

Mary Ann's greatest pride was always in her family. Each of her children was blessed with one of her hand-made quilts and each of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren with a baby quilt.

Mary Ann is survived by her children: Laurie (Paul) Lata of Madison, Wis., Linda (Gary) Messmore of La Grange Park, Ill., Louise (Ken) Lewis of Kansas City, Kan., Tom (Sue) Krekel of Des Moines, Anne (Brian) Mitchell of Burlington, Dan (Ronda) Krekel of Blue Springs, Mo.; grandchildren, Kurt Lewis, Amanda (Brandon) Burgus, Kelly Lewis, Sarah (Dan) Floriano, Natalie (Fairman) Campbell, Scott Mitchell, Andrew (Lauren) Krekel, Katie (Daniel) Ryan, Benjamin (Elysia) Krekel, Alex Messmore, Owen Krekel, Brittany Krekel, and Brandon Krekel; and great-grandchildren, Parker and Brinley Burgus; Nick, Ben and Jake Floriano; James, Evelyn and Grant Campbell; Raymond Krekel; and Elliot Ryan. She is further survived by her sister-in-law, Mary Coyne, and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jim, parents, brother, Donald Champagne, sister, Margie Yale, and twin grandsons, Albert and Louis Krekel.

Prugh Funeral Service is in care of the arrangements.

 </figure>Mary Ann Krekel, 92, of Burlington, died Monday, Feb. 19 at Klein Center, following a journey with dementia. Mary Ann was born in Burlington on Dec. 17, 1931 to Albert and Helen Zaiser Champagne. She graduated from Burlington High School, class of 1949. Mary Ann met Jim Krekel on a blind date, and they were married on July 25, 1953. They enjoyed forty-eight years of loving marriage until Jim died on June 15, 2001.&nbsp;Mary Ann enjoyed working at Dr. Hahn's dental office, but then happily took on her role as wife and mother. She said she always wanted a large family. And she did, raising their six children in a home filled with love and laughter.Mary Ann was a Girl Scout leader at St. John's School as well as active in the PTA. She spent many years volunteering her time baking and then selling refreshments every Tuesday at the Knights of Columbus BINGO. She also served for many years with the Knights of Columbus Ladies Auxiliary as well as the Funeral Ladies Luncheon group at St. John's Catholic Church.Mary Ann's greatest pride was always in her family. Larry L. Kelly, 80, of Burlington, died Sunday, Feb. 18, 2024, at the OakView Nursing Home and Rehabilitation in Burlington.

Born Dec. 15, 1943, in Burlington, he was the son of Louis Lee and U. Pearl Hootman Kelly. He married Barbara in Germany, and she preceded him in death.&nbsp;

Larry graduated from the Burlington Community Schools.

He was a U.S. Army Veteran, serving during the Vietnam War from Sept. 11, 1969 until Sept. 10, 1975.

Larry spent most of his life as a truck driver and loved doing just that. He was a big reader. It was known that Larry would read almost any book you would put in front of him. When he wasn't invested in a book, you could find him watching old movies, especially westerns. Larry always had a song in his head. He was always singing no matter what. Above all, he especially loved his children, grandchildren, and family.

Survivors include his first wife, Sandra Morgan; son, Keith (Katherine ) Kelly of &nbsp;Fort Gratiot, Mich., daughter, Kari (Roger) Benz of Wever, son, Michael Kelly of Germany, son, Eric (Kimberly) Kelly of Burlington; sister Sherry (Dan) Weinreich of Lomax, Ill.; grandchildren, Jarrett Cole Kelly of Mich., Morgan Kelly of Mich., Akiura Pena of Germany, Charisma Kelly of Germany; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents Louis and Pearl, and two brothers, Donald Dean Kelly, and Jerry J. Kelly&nbsp;

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh Crematory.

Harold Richard Finke, 83, of Burlington, died Sunday, Feb. 18, 2024, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born Oct. 9, 1940, in Burlington, he was the son of Willett L. and Esther E. Schulz Finke. On April 4, 1981, he married Janice Coleen Bowerbank in Burlington.&nbsp;

He graduated from Danville High School in 1959. Harold served his country in the United States Army National Guard for six years. He worked for Ideal Concrete for 28 years.

He was a member of Harmony Bible Church in Danville. Harold loved ministry and always enjoyed making his custom thank you cards for friends and family that always included a Bible verse on them. He enjoyed taking care of his yard, mowing, and doing projects on his house.&nbsp;

Survivors include his wife, Janice Coleen Finke of Burlington; four children, Craig Eugene Bowerbank of Lawrenceburg, Tenn., Brian Dean (Amy) Bowerbank of Zionsville, Ind., Darla Janeen (Roy) Cochenour of Danville, Beverly (Ron) Vorwerk of Sperry; six grandchildren, Joshua Bowerbank, Katie (Zach) Foster, Trevor Bowerbank, Daniel Vorwerk, Benjamin (Zoe) Vorwerk, Sarah (Caleb) Siegle; two great-grandchildren, Jayden Bowerbank and Penelope Vorwerk; brother, Devin (Kristin) Finke of Danville; and two sisters, Barb (Lucky) Burrell of Middletown and Eileen (JK) Smith of Burlington.

Juanita May Boyle, 96, of Burlington, died Sunday, Feb. 18, 2024, at the OakView Nursing Home and Rehabilitation in Burlington.

Born May 2, 1927, in Mount Pleasant, she was the daughter of Andrew &nbsp;and Alma R. Wilson Boyd. On May 19, 1947, she married Thomas Frederic &nbsp;in West Burlington. He died May 27, 2014.

Juanita worked for 32 years as a Nursing Assistant for Mercy Hospital, Burlington Medical Center, and the Klein Center.

Juanita was a member of Divine Mercy Parish. She was known for her love of gardening, &nbsp;and yard work. She always made sure that her yard was looking impeccable. Juanita had a love for traveling. She had been to many places including weekends in The Ozarks, Florida, Las Vegas, Hawaii, Bahamas, and five NASCAR Races. Juanita was also known to be a sports fan cheering on the Green Bay Packers, and the Cardinals. When she was not cheering on her favorite sports teams, she was always up for a good shopping trip. What she loved most of all was spending time with her family. She always looked forward to the annual family vacation and family gatherings.

Survivors include son, Philip Boyle and Paula of West Burlington, daughter, Cecilia (Darrell) Clevidence of Galesburg, Ill., granddaughter, Martha (Andy) Goodman of Galesburg, granddaughter, Margaret Strean and David of &nbsp;East Galesburg; six great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, both parents, two sisters, and two brothers.

As per Juanita's wishes, cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh Crematory. No visitation will be held, and inurnment will be at a later date.

A memorial has been established for St. Vincent dePaul Food Pantry and the Des Moines County Humane Society.

Donald LeRoy Neff died on Feb. 19, 2024, at Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House, in West Burlington.

Born Aug. 25, 1936, in Burlington. He was the son of Lawrence Earl and Helen Anna Steinbrecher Neff.

Don worked for the downtown Sears as the hardware manager for over 20 years. He later worked for the city.

He was a member of the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).&nbsp;

Survivors include one son, Donald (Michele) Neff; two daughters, Penny (Mike) Sebeny, and Pam (David) Vaughan; 10 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

Karen Lee Losey, 85, of Burlington, died Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2024 at her home in Burlington.

Born Dec. 25, 1938, in Mount Sterling, IA, she was the daughter of Ross William and Ida Mae Shriver Losey. &nbsp;

She was a 1956 graduate of Farmington High School in Farmington, and received her Bachelor's degree from Iowa Wesleyan College in 1965.

She was a retired teacher having taught at Central City, Monroe and Sigourney Iowa schools and in Jacksonville, Ill.

She was a member of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). She enjoyed sewing and stitching, traveling, reading and doing sudoku puzzles. She was an avid Cardinals and Iowa Hawkeyes fan.&nbsp;

Survivors include her sister, Ruth E. Vornkahl of Burlington; nieces, Jan Vornkahl, Susan Johnson, Rhonda (Lonnie) Good and Sheila (Kevin) Saunders; nephews, Kent Losey, Rick (Melissa) Losey and Mike Losey; sister-in-law, Sharon Ellis (Losey); great nieces and great nephews, Grant ( Allison) Johnson, Emily Eckstein, Wesley Johnson, Kayla (Brad) Harwell, Christopher (Jamie) Saunders, Nathan (Hannah) Losey, Wyatt Losey and Chance Losey; several great-great nieces and nephews and various cousins.&nbsp;

Louis Rodrigue Guery, 71, of Port Saint Lucie, Fla., died Monday, Feb. 12, 2024, at Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born in Haiti on Oct. 10, 1952, he was the son of Gerrard Guery and Venette Clairesaint Guery.

Louis graduated with a bachelor’s degree in architecture, and he was an entrepreneur and real estate broker. He loved music, playing the guitar, dancing, writing poems, and going to the ocean. Louis always wanted to make sure that no matter how his day was going, anyone with whom he came in contact would leave with a smile. He was passionate about listening to people, shared his wisdom freely, and mentored family and friends while sharing God’s love with them.

He is survived by his wife Therese Francois; four children: Claire, Roselaure, Louis Rodrigue, and Lynn E. Guery and one grandson; four sisters: Gerda St. Cloud, Marie Jinette Milfort, Marie Elza Guery, and Kettly Borgela and two brothers: Pierre Guy Guery and Jean Joseph Guery. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.

The funeral service for Louis will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 24, 2024, at Lunning Chapel with Pastor Dean Graber as the officiant.

Per his wishes cremation will be accorded following the funeral service and has been entrusted to the care of Lunning Chapel.

Louis Rodrigue Guery

Joe V. W. Gaston, 84, died peacefully on Friday, Feb. 9, 2024, at his home in Springfield, Tenn. He was born in Burlington, on Feb. 28, 1939, to Charles Marion and Gertrude Williams Gaston. After growing up in Iowa, Joe spent most of his adult life in Chattanooga, Tenn., where his mother’s family originated, and in Nashville and Springfield, the home of his wife’s family.

Joe is survived by his devoted wife, Kay Baker Gaston; daughters Healan Gaston of Framingham, Mass. (Andrew Jewett) and Josephine Larson of Springfield (Andrew); grandchildren&nbsp;Erika Larson, Emma Larson, Elijah Larson, Joseph Jewett, and Samuel Jewett; and two great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his twin brother, Charles Gaston Jr. of Jacksonville, Fla., younger sister Hilda Tecklenberg (Paul) of Greenville, S.C., and brother-in-law Tom Baker (Mary Hocken) of Amherst, Mass. Joe was predeceased by his older sister Peggy Wiseman (Reid) of Mount Pleasant, S.C., and sister-in-law Lynne Rudder Baker of Amherst, Mass.

After graduating from Burlington High School, Joe attended Duke University. There, he studied history and played varsity tennis, winning the Atlantic Coast Conference singles and doubles championships. He also served as attorney for the town of Walden and board chairman for the Moccasin Bend Mental Health Institute, among other civic duties.

Joe and Kay later retired to Woodard Hall Farm near Springfield, where they oversaw the restoration of a historic house built in 1792 that is listed on the National Register. Viewing himself as “a recovering lawyer,” Joe lent his expertise to civic groups such as the Red River Watershed Association, the Robertson County Fair Board, 840 Alternatives, and the Stokes and Sarah Brown Charitable Foundation. His other interests and hobbies included tennis, aviation, horseback riding, history, and politics.

Daniel R. Hewitson, 83, of Burlington, died Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2024, at his home in Burlington with his wife and daughter by his side.

Born April 16, 1940, in Strathroy, Ontario, Canada, he was the son of George and Marion Olive Roberts Hewitson. On Aug. 30, 1987, he married Connee Parsons in Aurora Ill.&nbsp;

He worked in the restaurant management industry his whole career.

He attended Wings of Praise Church in West Burlington. Daniel will be remembered as a prankster and a very hard worker who always provided for his family. He enjoyed listening to music, watching classic television shows, and spending time with his family.

Survivors include his wife of 36 years, Connee Hewitson; daughter, Amy Lynn (Ted) of West Frankfort, Ill.; five grandchildren, Dylan (Erin), Amanda (Andrew), Tabitha, Hannah, and Alena Mae; and sister, RoseAnne (Rick) Albright of Aurora, Ill.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Edward Hewitson, sister-in-law, Muriel Hewitson, two sisters, Vera Hewitson, Mary Thiel, brother-in-law, Jim Thiel, and a granddaughter-in-heart, Jaelyn.

Marcella Frances Ertz , 97, formerly of Burlington, died in Papillion, Neb., where she had moved about four years ago to be close to her brother and sister-in-law.

Marcella was born at St. Francis Hospital in Burlington to Francis Bernard “Pete” and Mary Jennie Thibedeau Ertz on Aug. 20, 1926.

She graduated from St. Paul’s High School and was a lifetime member of St John’s Catholic Church.&nbsp; She loved to travel, making many trips as a buyer for Schram’s for over 60 years.&nbsp; She visited family in many parts of the world, loved to do needlework, read, and watch old movies.

Survivors that mourn her passing are brother Ernest J. (Shirley) Papillion NE; nephews and nieces Jerry Hoenig, Colleen (Darrius) Baker, Tara (Paul) Koestner, Kathy Hoenig, Sarah Hoenig, Michael (Sohee) Ertz, Dan (Heidi) Ertz, Sara Schmidt,&nbsp; Phil (Daffodil) Schmidt, Mary Schmidt and several great nieces and nephews.&nbsp;

Arlene M. Bonnesen, 97, died, Feb. 11, 2024, at Wapello Specialty Care Nursing Home in Wapello.

Arlene was born May 3, 1927, to Arthur “A.J” and Veronica Christensen. After graduating from Otho High School in 1945, she joined the Army Nurse Corp. where she obtained her nursing degree. Arlene then married her high school sweetheart Lloyd Bonnesen on July 5, 1947, in Fort Dodge.

Arlene was a faithful wife and devoted mother to her three children, Keith, Joe, and Cathy. She moved with her husband and family from Fort Dodge a few times until remaining in the Wapello area. Arlene enjoyed her nursing career, which spanned over 40 years, traveling, gardening, and time spent with her family.

She is survived by her three children; Keith Bonnesen and Joseph (Carol) Bonnesen both of Wapello and Catherine (Mike) Walker of Wilton; grandchildren, Jeremy, Joseph, Chris Ann, Brad, Brett and Kim; great-grandchildren, Jordan, Kyler, Jaylee, Taylor, Riley, Brayden, A.J., Archer, Abram, Drew, Ty. Alexis, Aiden, Allana, Zachary, Cora, Hadley, Lucas, and Katelyn; great-great-grandchildren, Maci, Lilli, and Daphni; brothers, Paul (Beth) Christensen, Mike (Karen) Christensen, Terry (Linda) Christensen and Carl (Elizabeth) Christensen; sisters, Catherine (Bruce) Welchel and Christine (Frank) Collie and numerous nieces and nephews.

Robert M. Balzer, 92, of West Burlington, died Monday, Feb. 12, 2024, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in West Burlington.

Born, July 5, 1931, in West Burlington, he was the son of Martin and Gertrude Hull Balzer.

He graduated from Burlington High School in 1948. On July 16, 1949, he married Carolyn “Kay” Bright in Kahoka, Mo. She died Aug. 12, 2015.

Robert was the co-owner of Balzer Brothers, Inc. in West Burlington. He worked for the CB &amp; Q railroad shops as a pipefitter retiring in 1991 from BNSF after 47 years of service.

He was a member of West Burlington United Methodist Church. He was a member of the United Methodist Men. He was a railroad veteran and a BNSF Alumni member. Robert sang in the choir, and glee club and ran track in high school. He had an antique car. He liked to go to Old Threshers where he showed and paraded antique tractors. He collected antique tractors and HO trains, which he liked to run and show to kids. He threshed oats with a steam engine in the summer. Robert enjoyed traveling with family, participating on bowling leagues, fishing and mushroom hunting on his farm. Robert enjoyed woodburning and making birdhouses. He was an excellent welder and could fix anything. He never missed his grandkids ballgames or concerts. Robert mowed grass at church well into his 80’s and was a good cook.

Survivors include one daughter Julie (Lon Newton) Goudie and one son Randy (Kathy) Balzer all of West Burlington; three grandchildren Michael (Natalie) Goudie, Ashley (Charles) Mitchell and Jennifer (Brad) Hoenig; five step-grandchildren Dan, Teresa, Larry, Rich, and Joe; ten great-grandchildren Caleb, Grace, Lillian, Gavin, Elena, Ceylon, Alex, Emilia, Haven, Charli; one great-great-grandson Ciel; sister Donna Hightower of Salem, and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Kay, brother Ronald, son-in-law Jim Goudie, grandson Zachary Balzer, and sisters Helen Miller, Mabel Peterson, and Phyllis Breuer.

The funeral for Robert will be 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 17, 2024 at Lunning Chapel with Reverend Nancy Sutherland officiating. Interment will be in Prairie Grove Zion Cemetery. The visitation for Robert will be Friday, February 16th from 5 to 7 p.m. at Lunning Chapel.

Shirley Zahner, of Burlington, Iowa, passed away on&nbsp;Thursday, Feb. 1, 2024, at the age of 76. She was surrounded by her family at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in West Burlington.

Shirley was born on&nbsp;Jan. 23, 1948, to parents Charles and Marjorie Stafford. Shirley worked for many years as a pharmacy technician at the Burlington Apothecary and Hy-Vee Pharmacy on Angular. She retired in 2013 and spent her free time watching sports, game shows, and every hallmark movie. She was a loyal viewer of Wheel of Fortune, Family Feud, $100,000 Pyramid, and several other game shows. She was a fan of both the Iowa Hawkeyes and St. Louis Cardinals. Although she didn’t have a favorite NFL team, she loved watching Patrick Mahomes and the KC Chiefs in recent years. Shirley enjoyed shopping with her granddaughters and went on several shopping trips with friends in her earlier years. Along with her late son Larry, she enjoyed traveling to watch her grandchildren compete in sports.

She donated regularly to the Boys &amp; Girls Club of America, Divine Mercy, and Shriners. She was a member of St. John Catholic Church.

She is survived by her granddaughters, Leah (Matt) Weinreich of Burlington, Paige Zahner (Joshua Marroquin) of Cedar Rapids, and Emily Zahner of Des Moines; her grandsons, Chad (Krystal) Klein of Burlington, Andrew (Kristin) Klein of Fairfax, Coleton, Jacob, and Joshua Zahner of Burlington, Zak Zahner of Cedar Rapids, and Jason, Nick, and Tyler Zahner; several great-granddaughters and great-grandsons, most recently Gabriella Marroquin (Paige &amp; Josh) and Kason Klein (Andrew &amp; Kristin); her stepdaughter Rose Klein of Burlington; her stepson Tim Zahner of Shell Rock; sons David Zahner of Cedar Rapids and Kenneth Zahner of Burlington; along with a host of friends.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, her husband, Darrel Zahner, and her son Larry Zahner.&nbsp;

Shirley was a quiet and generous person, often going above and beyond with no expectations of recognition or anything in return. She will be missed deeply by those who were close to her.

She was a member of St. John Catholic Church.She is survived by her granddaughters, Leah (Matt) Weinreich of Burlington, Paige Zahner (Joshua Marroquin) of Cedar Rapids, and Emily Zahner of Des Moines; her grandsons, Chad (Krystal) Klein of Burlington, Andrew (Kristin) Klein of Fairfax, Coleton, Jacob, and Joshua Zahner of Burlington, Zak Zahner of Cedar Rapids, and Jason, Nick, and Tyler Zahner; several great-granddaughters and great-grandsons, most recently Gabriella Marroquin (Paige &amp; Josh) and Kason Klein (Andrew &amp; Kristin); her stepdaughter Rose Klein of Burlington; her stepson Tim Zahner of Shell Rock; sons David Zahner of Cedar Rapids and Kenneth Zahner of Burlington; along with a host of friends.Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, her husband, Darrel Zahner, and her son Larry Zahner.&nbsp;Shirley was a quiet and generous person, often going above and beyond with no expectations of recognition or anything in return. She will be missed deeply by those who were close to her.According to her wishes cremation has been entrusted to the care of Murphy Funeral Home of Mount Pleasant.&nbsp;

Donna Lucille Dupree, 86, of New London, died Monday, Feb. 12, 2024, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in West Burlington. Born Jan. 15, 1938, in New London, she was the daughter of Woodrow Wilson and Frances Lucille Kendall Brown. She married Jerry James Dupree and they later divorced.&nbsp; Donna graduated from New London High School.&nbsp; She worked at Champion Spark Plug for 30 years. Donna enjoyed being outside, working in the yard, tending to her huge flower garden, going to garage sales, and making crafts. She loved her neighbors and enjoyed any time that she spent socializing with them. Survivors include her son, Shane (Connie) Dupree of New London; two grandchildren, Lisa Dupree of New London and Aaron Smith of Cañon City, Colo. She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Coleen Thorington and Jeanette Martin. Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh Crematory. There will be no visitation or services. Prugh Funeral Service is in care of the arrangements.

Donna Lucille Dupree

James P. Mesler, 88, of West Burlington, died Sunday, Feb. 11, 2024, in West Burlington.

Born June 29, 1935, in Omaha, he was the son of Paul and Irma M. Thoisen Mesler. On Aug. 9, 1958, he married Monica Meyer at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Burlington. She died on July 20, 2022.

He was a 1953 graduate of Burlington Catholic High School and a 1955 graduate of Burlington Junior College. He served in the U.S. Navy Reserves from 1953 until 1961.

Jim worked at C.B.&amp; Q Railroad Shops as an electrician, Carson Pierre Scott as an Assistant Manager, Drake Hardware Company as a buyer, and was co-owner of Mesler Supply and Fur Company with his wife for over 40 years.

Jim volunteered for the Des Moines County Sheriff's Department as a Reserve Officer for 14 years and the West Burlington Police Department as a Reserve Officer for two years. He enjoyed softball and racquetball (lots of tournaments), wintering in Las Vegas, traveling, and casinos.Survivors include his four children, Ann Marie Kirk of Burlington, Jean Elizabeth (Leon) Helling of Ankeny, Thomas James (Deborah) Mesler of Windham Summit, Penn., and Patrick Joseph (Anna) Mesler of Burlington; nine grandchildren, Janette Yenchko, Eric (Natasha Knutson) Rahn, Jana (Timothy) Rahn-Kilfoy, Nathaniel (Kristina) Poli, Brooke Poli, Summer Mesler, Lily Mesler, Breana (Michael) Williams-Hawkins, and Gage Mesler; nine great-grandchildren Evelyn, Claire and Logan Yenchko, Luca Rahn, Kaden and Addison Kilfoy and Sydney, Avery and James DeWayne "J.D." Hawkins; one sister, Mary Houck of Aurora, Ill.; and several nieces and nephews.Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents.Visitation will be from 9:30 to 11 a.m. where the family will receive friends Thursday, Feb. 15, 2024 at Divine Mercy Parish-SS. Mary and Patrick Catholic Church, West Burlington.The Memorial Mass of the Resurrection for Mr. Mesler will be 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 15, 2024, at SS. Mary and Patrick Catholic Church, West Burlington with Fr. Dominic Nguyen as the Celebrant.&nbsp; Inurnment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, West Burlington.&nbsp; A time of food and fellowship will be held in the St. Mary's Cafeteria following the inurnment.In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery.Prugh Funeral Service is in care of the arrangements.
