Lisa Shauyn Walker, 58, of Burlington, died Monday, Dec. 12, 2022, at her home.

Born Feb. 8, 1964, in Clovis, N.M., she was the daughter of Harlen Lane and Roberta Ann Russell Peterson. On Dec. 29, 1984, she married Harvey David Walker in California.&nbsp;

Lisa graduated from Winnetonka High School in Kansas City, Mo. in 1982. She later received her CDA.

She worked in childcare at Headstart and YMCA Daycare and had a passion for taking care of children.&nbsp;

Lisa was very religious, she loved God and going to Church. She was a big Kansas City Chiefs fan and loved Starbucks coffee. Lisa put others before herself and would do anything to make others happy. She loved shopping for her grandbabies and spending time with her family.

Survivors include husband, of Burlington; son, Sean (Arrin Kartel) Walker of Middletown; sister, Shannon (David) Collier of Davenport; sister-in-law, Nancy Howe of Burlington; adopted children, Marcus (Hanna) Timmons of Burlington; adopted granddaughter, La'Myah and many friends.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Lane "Tiger" Robert Peterson.&nbsp;

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh Crematory.

The memorial service for Mrs. Walker will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 17, 2022, at Union Baptist Church Full Gospel Fellowship with Pastor Marcus Timmons officiating. A time of food and fellowship will be held at the church following the service.

Kason James Coleman, was born at 7:01 p.m. and died peacefully in his parents' arms at 10:19 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 13, 2022, at the University of Iowa Hospitals &amp; Clinics in Iowa City. 

He was a beautiful baby boy weighing 14 ounces and 10.8 inches long. In the 3 hrs and 18 minutes of life that he gifted us, he was able to experience love, laughter, and joy with his family.

He was the son of Scotty and Kathryn Cook Coleman.

Survivors include his parents, Scotty and Kathryn Coleman of West Burlington; maternal grandparents, Ronald and Becky Cook of West Burlington; paternal grandparents, Karl and Renae Coleman of Sperry; three aunts, Stacey Coleman, Shelly Villarreal, and Stephany Newkirk; and uncle, Ronnie Cook.

He was preceded in death by his maternal and paternal great-grandparents.

A private celebration of life will be held at a later date.

Anthony Neil Johnson, 43, of Biggsville, Ill., died Wednesday, Dec. 14, 2022, at Henry County Health Center in Mount Pleasant.

Born Jan. 12, 1979, in Fort Madison, he was the son of Leonard J. Johnson and Suzanne Kraus Johnson.

Neil worked as an Electrician and more recently in maintenance for the Burlington Golf Club.

He loved being outdoors and really enjoyed working for the country club.

Anthony Neil Johnson

Virginia M. Orton, 96, of Burlington, died Sunday, Dec. 11, 2022, at Oakview Nursing and Rehabilitation.

Born Jan. 1, 1926, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Willie and Pearl Tee Brockway. She married Robert (Bob) Orton on March 8, 1946, in Burlington and he preceded her in death on Aug. 7, 2020.

Virginia was a homemaker and prided herself on being a good cook. Her family always enjoyed her homemade noodles and peanut brittle. For many years she sewed her own clothes and sewed the fabric that her husband used for re-upholstering furniture. Virginia enjoyed camping, fishing, and going to their cabin as well as bowling in several leagues.

She was a lifetime member of Asbury United Methodist church where she served in many church circles. Also, was a lifetime member of the FOE 150 Eagles Auxiliary, VFW Auxiliary, and DAV Auxiliary.

Survivors include three children: Gary (Sue) Orton, Janet (Dan) Snyder, and Alan (Sharon) Orton all of Burlington; four grandchildren, Troy (Mary) Snyder of Chillicothe, Ill.; Denise (Ryan) Machholz of Burlington, Randy Orton of Burlington and Rob (Janel) Orton of West Burlington; Eight great-granddaughters, seven great-great-grandchildren and one niece and two nephews; sister-in-law Judy Pilkington of Gladstone, Ill.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 74 years; her parents; one sister Leona Heath; one brother Randy Brockway; nephew Scott Brockway and grandson Chris Orton.

The funeral service for Mrs. Orton will be 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 15 at Lunning Chapel. Internment will be in Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may visit the family one hour prior to the service.

Memorials have been established for Asbury United Methodist church, FOE 150 Eagles Auxiliary, and Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House.

Michael Anthony Maddox, 71, of West Burlington, died Sunday, Dec. 11, 2022, at his home.

Born March 27, 1951, in Burlington, he was the son of Albert Allen and Hazel Marion Thomson Maddox Sr.

Michael graduated from Danville High School. He married Lynn Lillie. They later divorced.

He was an owner/operator truck driver for over 40 years. Prior to that he was a roofer and worked at Murray Ironworks.

Michael was of the catholic faith. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles #105 in Burlington. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and socializing.

Survivors include his son Roger (Connie) Maddox of Iowa City; his companion of over 40 years, Maggie Wilson of West Burlington; one step-daughter Becky Gilbertson of Wichita, Kan.; four grandchildren Austin Maddox, Katy Maddox, Lindsey Nott, and Abby Huber; seven step-grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one step-great-grandchild and sister Carol Reed of Burlington.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son Dallas Maddox; sister Shirley Runyon and brother Albert Allen “Sonny” Maddox Jr.

The funeral service for Michael will be Monday, Dec. 19 at 2 p.m. at Lunning Chapel with Deacon Gary Johnson officiating. Interment will be in Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday, Dec. 18 from 2 to 4 p.m. at Lunning Chapel.

Michael Anthony Maddox

Margaret Ann Walter, 92, of Burlington, died Sunday, Dec. 11, 2022, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in West Burlington.

Margaret was born on Nov. 27, 1930, at St. Francis Hospital in Burlington. She was the daughter of Ray Countryman and Anna Kassel Countryman. She graduated from Burlington High School in 1948. Margaret married Charles Frederick Walter on June 3, 1950, in Burlington. They celebrated 46 years together until his passing in 1996.

They eventually moved to California where Margaret worked as a nurse’s aide in Sacramento. After moving back to Burlington, &nbsp;she worked as an Operating Room Technician at Burlington Medical Center until her retirement.

She was an extremely talented seamstress, making clothing for her children and grandchildren. She could make anything, from swimsuits to wedding dresses. She loved gardening and always had plants inside and out. She read books all the time and enjoyed listening to audiobooks. She had many dogs over the years and enjoyed providing her own mix of bird feed to the birds outside.

Later in life, Margaret became an avid bowler. She traveled the United States, as far as Hawaii and Niagara Falls, to bowl in state tournaments with her bowling team. Margaret also played Bingo regularly with her friends around town. She became interested in genealogy, even traveling to the Family History Library in Salt Lake City to do research.

She was a loving mother and deeply loved her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. Every year on their birthday, she would call to sing Happy Birthday. There were many overnight visits, lots of laughs, jokes, and fun. She was an important part of all of their lives.&nbsp;Her ornery, tenacious spirit will forever be missed by her family and friends. The memories she gave us will carry on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her. 

She is survived by her children: Cheri (Pat) Dacy, Kathi (Don) Coleman, Robyn Walter, and Jeff Walter; her grandchildren Michael (Michelle) Easley, Jason (Mindy) Easley, Dustin (Diane Hur) Hellberg, Ron (KeAira) Coleman, Zach Hellberg, Tim (Teresa) Coleman, Brett Dacy, Sam (Seth Garrett) Hellberg, Jenna (Mitch) Mehaffy, Lisa (Ben) Golwitzer, Jordon Walter, Sheyanne Walter, many great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by both of her parents, her husband, her daughter Pamela Hellberg, her grandson Brad Dacy, and her great-granddaughter Tiffany Easley.

Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. with the family receiving friends Friday, Dec. 16, 2022, at Prugh Funeral Service, 3940 Division St.

Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery at a later date.

A memorial has been established for the Des Moines County Animal Shelter.

Leo “Jumpy” Robinson Jr., age 84, died Saturday, November 26, 2022, at the Albany Stratton VA Medical Center in Albany, N.Y. surrounded by his loving family.

He was born Oct. 17, 1938, in Keokuk. He was the son of Leo Edward and Mary Azlean Robinson. Leo attended Keokuk High School where he received the nickname “Jumpy” for his athletic ability.

Leo enlisted into the U.S. Air Force at the young age of 17, serving from January 4, 1956, until October 16, 1959. While serving he developed many skill sets, one of them being the ability to operate heavy machinery which later translated for Leo when he became a truck driver for Riley Brothers. Leo also worked as a welder for Ceco Building Systems in Mt. Pleasant for 28 years.&nbsp;

Some of Leo’s favorite hobbies were hunting, fishing, and watching sports. He specifically loved watching the Los Angeles Dodgers, Dallas Cowboys, and playing cards while enjoying his all-time favorite snack of choice, jelly beans.

He is survived by his son, Trent L (Dolores) Robinson; his grandchildren, Candace Ives, Carissa Jenkins, DeVante, and Tyrell Robinson; several great-grandchildren; ex-wife Gerarda Buckner-Robinson, his step-children, Gerald Overstreet, Will Overstreet, Christine Overstreet, and Derrick Overstreet; several aunts, uncles, and cousins; and his miniature schnauzer Smokey.&nbsp;

He is predeceased by his daughter Kimberly D. Overstreet, several aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Visitation for Mr. Robinson will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 15, 2022, at Prugh Funeral Services, 3940 Division Street. Following the visitation, family and friends will process to the graveside service in Keokuk National Cemetery.&nbsp;

He was born April 23, 1950, in Burlington to Clarence Edward and Anna Mae Roarke Smith.&nbsp;&nbsp;He was a graduate of Burlington High School and a member of First United Church of Christ in Burlington.

He enjoyed hunting and fishing; going down to the river; watching sports on TV; he had a great sense of humor and always enjoyed a good joke.&nbsp;

Survivors include two brothers, Ronald Smith of Tunica, Miss., and Roger Smith of Burlington; one sister Vicki (Mark) Kocol; his special friend Mary; and nieces and nephews.&nbsp;&nbsp;He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.

According to his wishes, his body has been cremated and a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.&nbsp;&nbsp;Elliott Chapel, New London, is assisting the family with arrangements.

Dale Kim Navntoft, 67 years, of Fort Madison, died Saturday, December 10, 2022, at his home surrounded by his family.&nbsp; He was born January 23, 1955, the son of Pete and Martha Nosich Navntoft.&nbsp; He first married Janet Welch, and together they had two girls, Melissa and Elizabeth.&nbsp; They later divorced.&nbsp; On December 30, 1988, he married Janet Thompson.&nbsp; She survives.

While in Colorado Dale worked construction, building homes, and doing professional drywall work.&nbsp; He moved to Iowa in 1978 and built his first home in Denmark.&nbsp; He was a welder for Huffman’s and then Case Company.&nbsp; He worked at Gleason Corporation for 28 years, where he was the plant manager and helped close the facility.&nbsp; He loved building things, Rock n’ Roll, fishing, shooting pool, yard work, and cars.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

He is survived by his wife, of Fort Madison; two daughters, Melissa Flores and Elizabeth (Brian) Ross, both of Burlington, Iowa; two step-daughters, JoAnn (Albert) Pritt of Weatherford, Tex. and Angie (John) Gagne of Belleville, Ill.; one sister, Norma Navntoft of Denver, Colo.; one half-sister, Barb Hallenbeck of Westminster, Colo.; seven grandchildren:&nbsp; Blaine, Ashley, Kyle, Amber, Robert, Andrew, and Loren; one niece, two nephews, and The Thompson Family.&nbsp; He was preceded in death by his parents and two grandsons, Tatum and Bryson.

Dale’s family will greet friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 15, 2022, at the Barr Memorial Chapel, Fort Madison.&nbsp; A celebration of life will follow and begin at 2 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Dorothy Louise Duley Young, 75, died Dec. 6, 2022.&nbsp; She was born March 10, 1947, in Kirksville, Mo.&nbsp;

Although she contracted polio at the age of 4 years, she led a very active life, graduated from Scotland County High School in Memphis, Mo. in the Class of 1965 and later Gem City College in Quincy, Illinois, and Southeastern, Iowa.

Known to her friends as “Dee”, she married twice and had three daughters, was an animal lover of especially dogs, a huge Iowa Hawkeye fan, and a member of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship in Burlington. Living in various places over the years, she always gravitated back to her beloved Burlington.

Dee is survived by her daughters, Tracy and Len Cloke of Burlington, Margi and Randy Warner of Kingsville, Mo., and Crystal and Kenny Adams of Keokuk; a brother, Phillip and Dianne Duley of Memphis, Mo.; 5 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.

Dee was preceded in death by Cricket, Precious, Sam, Kiki, Little Bit and her forever-and-ever soulmate Tiny Tim “Toodles”

There will be no visitation or services. Cremation accorded with interment of ashes in Memphis Cemetery, Memphis, Mo.

Judy worked for the Sperry Store as an invoice clerk and for Walmart.&nbsp;She was a member of the Sperry United Methodist Church and was active in Bible School, AWANAS and T.T.T. She enjoyed sewing, making quilts, animals, cooking and baking pies, many of which she baked for the hospice house. Judy’s greatest joy in life came from the time she spent with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and was always present for their activities.

Judy will be deeply missed by her two sons: Tim (Rhonda) Clover of Mediapolis and Dan (Janine) Clover of Sperry; one sister, Deb (Chuck) Ealey of Wapello; seven grandchildren, Tyler (Michaela) Clover of Alpha, Illinois, Rylee Johnson of Mediapolis, Matt (Britanie) Clover of Mediapolis, Kylee (Bob) Virgin of Mediapolis, Katie (Trevor) Knapp of Wapello, Raegan (Kyle) Schulte of Sperry and Haley Clover of Mediapolis.&nbsp; Raegan and Haley were raised by the Clovers after the death of their mother.&nbsp; She is also survived by three step-grandchildren, Nick, Amber and Dalton (Courtney) Scott; fourteen great-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; brother-in-law, Jim (Carol) Clover of Ames; sister-in-law, Irene Kinney of West Burlington; and several nieces and nephews.

Mary Patricia Kuehnel, 67, of Burlington, died on Oct. 17, 2022, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center. She was surrounded by her loving family.

Mary Patricia was born September 18, 1955, in Grand Forks, N.D. to Norman and Alice Helle Kuehnel. Mary was the fifth child out of nine and the eldest girl.

Mary worked at the Klein Center for 25 years and then, Hope Haven Cottonwood until she retired. Her love for her work and patients showed throughout her career.

Mary enjoyed watching many shows, including; crime documentaries, reality shows, and medical shows, but most of all she enjoyed watching "Perry Mason". She enjoyed listing to music, especially her beloved Beatles. Family was the most important part of her life, she loved spending time with her children and grandchildren. Mary was a strong-willed woman with the greatest strength, beyond measure.

Mary was united in marriage to Glenn C. Anderson in March of 1973. They had five beautiful children together. They parted ways but remained lifelong friends. She will be dearly missed by her family and friends.

She is survived by her children: Jason, Joshua, and Jacob Anderson, of Burlington, Jamie Counts of Farmington, and John Anderson, of Japan; her 11 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and her siblings, James Kuehnel of Simi, Calif. Richard Kuehnel of Elizabethton, Tenn., and Catherine Freeman of Grand Forks, N.D.

Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. with the family to receive friends Wednesday, Dec. 14, at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home.

He was a proud Air Force veteran. A truck driver by trade, and an entrepreneur, he had ideas for many projects.

He is survived by his children; Christina Kelton of Florida, Cherish Kelton of Mount Pleasant, and Vincent Kelton of Iowa; two grandchildren; his long-term caregiver and companion, Annette Ellison of Burlington; three sisters, Beverly Macke, Diana Fisk, Shirley McAlister all of Arkansas, and nieces and nephews.

According to his wishes, there will be no services. Cremation has been accorded and entrusted to the care of Lunning Chapel.

Donald William "Don" Eversmeyer, 83, of Burlington, died Sunday, December 4, 2022, at the OakView Nursing Home and Rehabilitation in Burlington.

Born June 19, 1939, in Oakville, he was the son of W. Delbert and Helen Kathleen Heins Eversmeyer. On July 16, 1961, he married Sharon Elaine Miller in Burlington. She preceded him in death on December 31, 2016.

He graduated from Wapello High School in 1957. He then went on to attend Burlington Junior College and graduated with an associate's degree in 1960. Don served in the US Army from 1961 to 1967. Don was a farmer. He also worked for UPS for 20 years.

He was a member of First Assembly of God Church. Don was also the Union Township Trustee and Clerk. He was an avid Iowa Hawkeyes Fan; he enjoyed traveling, watching wildlife, and spending time with his family. In his later years, he was a passionate volunteer for the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House and Hospital.&nbsp;

Survivors include his son, Scott (Lisa) Eversmeyer of Burlington; daughter, Susan (Rod) Reynoldson of Burlington; five grandchildren, Amanda (Nick) Markovich, Allyson (Stanley) Sanders, Zachary Reynoldson, Ariel Reynoldson and Stephanie (Joshua) Logan; seven great-grandchildren, Wyatt and Lane Sanders, Carter and Harper Markovich, David, Elander and Addy Logan; four brothers, Dale, Dick, Alan and Jim Eversmeyer; two sisters-in-law, Deanna and Peggy; and several nieces and nephews.

Besides his wife of 55 years, he was preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers, Robert and Leonard.

Family will receive friends from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, December 10, at Burlington First Assembly of God.

Born January 19, 1934, in Burlington, Iowa, she was the daughter of Earl and Hazel (Marshall) Wright. She married Robert D. Mason on August 21, 1955. They later divorced.

Patricia worked as secretary to the plant manager for I.A.A.P and in sales. She most recently owned and operated the Grey Goose Inn, Bed and Breakfast, in Honey Creek State Park.

Patricia was a visionary. She loved to design and decorate. She was a bargain shopper and loved to negotiate prices along the way.

She is survived by her grandchildren; Jacob (Tara) Mason of Ankeny and Andrew (Amber) Mason and Elizabeth (Ryan) Frisicaro both of Burlington; six great-grandchildren, Gavin, Cambri, Adelyn, Lachlan, Michael, and Genevieve; two brothers, Gene Wright of Upland, California, and Bobby (Linda) Wright of Mission, Kan.; one sister, Cyndi (Greg) Munson of Bloomfield; several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, son Robert J. Mason and brother Richard Wright.

The funeral service for Ms. Mason will be 11 a.m. Friday, December 9 at Lunning Chapel. Pastor Jim Wakelin will officiate. Interment will be in Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the funeral service.

A memorial has been established for the Des Moines County Humane Society.

Mason and brother Richard Wright.The funeral service for Ms. Mason will be 11 a.m. Friday, December 9 at Lunning Chapel. Pastor Jim Wakelin will officiate. Doug Crist, 73, of Burlington, died Wednesday, November 30, 2022, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice in West Burlington.

Born April 15, 1949, in Mount Pleasant, he was the son of Donald Franklin and Betty Jane Fiscus Crist. On February 1, 1974, he married Cindi Albright in Stronghurst, Ill.&nbsp;

He was a U.S. Army Veteran, serving one tour of combat inland during the Vietnam Conflict from 1968 to 1970.

Doug was an Iron Worker out of Local #577 and later became the Business Agent for #577, taking care of Iowa, Illinois, and Missouri. He retired in 2010 after 41 years of work.

He was a member of the Iron Workers Local #577. He enjoyed being outdoors golfing, pheasant hunting, and morel hunting. Doug enjoyed playing cards and loved to spend time with his grandkids.&nbsp;

Survivors include wife of 48 years, Cindi Crist of Burlington; grandchildren, Mackinzie, Makayla, Makenna, and Makynleigh; and brother, Barry (Suzanne) Crist of Mc Queeney, Tex.

Besides his parents, he is preceded in death by his daughters, Jessica and Ashley Crist, and brother, Mark Wade Crist.

The celebration of life for Doug will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, December 10, 2022, at Simple Gatherings in Middletown. Full military honors will be rendered by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard.

Duane"Red" Thornburg, 88, of Burlington, died Thursday, December 1, 2022, in Burlington.

Born November 17, 1934, in Lowell, he was the son of Lloyd E. and Anna A. Berry Thornburg. On March 26, 1971, he married Linda Jean Russell in Oquawka, Ill.&nbsp;

Red was a 1953 graduate of Mt. Pleasant High School.&nbsp;

He was a U.S. Army Veteran, serving during the Korean War from July 17, 1956, until April 30, 1958.

Duane worked at J.I. Case Co. for 30 years.&nbsp; He was then a delivery driver for O'Reilly Auto Parts.

He was a member of Zion United Church of Christ, UAW local 807, VFW, and the Izaak Walton League where he served as president.&nbsp; He enjoyed woodworking, playing cards, and watching the Iowa Hawkeyes, Chicago Cubs, and the Chicago Bears.&nbsp; He also enjoyed hunting and fishing and cherished time with his family and grandchildren.

Survivors include wife, Linda Jean Thornburg of Burlington; three sons, Bryan (Pam) Thornburg of Fla., Lafe A. Martin of Burlington, and Joey (Hwa Cha) Thornburg of Severn, Md.; four daughters, Ramah (Danniel) Gehle of Fort Madison, Cindy (Kirk) Krogmeier of Keokuk, Lisa (John Ross) Martin of Birmingham, Mich. and Teresa (Mike) Heitmeier of West Burlington; 12 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one grandson Raymond Thornburg, and six brothers, Laverne, Myron, Tommy, Edward, Dale, and Harold Thornburg.

A celebration of life will be held in the spring. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery.&nbsp;

James Oral Martin, 82, of Burlington, died Sunday, December 4, 2022, at Southeast

Born November 1, 1940, he was the son of Oral Emory and Ethel Louise Walker Martin

After graduating from Burlington High School, James enlisted in the United States Navy.

Returning home, he worked for Burlington Linoleum &amp; Tile, Don's Guns, and the Mississippi&nbsp;Bakery. James was an NRA lifelong member and loved hunting, rodeos, and being with family.

Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Linda of Burlington; children Debbra Martin and Sherri&nbsp;Martin of Lomax, Ill., Michael (Tammy) Martin of Moline, Ill., Cyndy Foster and Tammy Jo&nbsp;Underwood of Burlington, and Scott (Amy) Tincher of Bloomington, Minn.; ten grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and one brother Charles (Joanna) Martin of Gallatin, Tenn., one niece,&nbsp;and one nephew.

He was preceded in death by his parents and great-grandson.

Cremation has been accorded and entrusted to the care of Lunning Chapel. Per James’ wishes, there will be no services at this time. There will be a celebration of life at a later date.

A memorial has been established for the Veteran’s Hospital in Iowa City.

Miriam A. Winter, 96, of Burlington, died Sunday, November 27, 2022, at her home.

Born October 1, 1926, in Mount Pleasant, she was the daughter of Fred L. and Eva Arnold Oldt. On June 26, 1946, she married Frank E. Winter in Burlington. He died on March 21, 2014.

Miriam worked at IRC, Designer's Viewpoint, and was an account administrator for Standard Register. She retired in 1992.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church. She was past president of Epsilon Sigma Alpha and active in King's Daughters.

Survivors include her daughters, Diane Hilkin and Julie Winter both of Burlington; two grandchildren, John (Allison) Hilkin of Aurora, Colo., and Liz Hilkin of Gainesville, Fla.;&nbsp; two great-grandsons, Elliott and Desmond Hilkin of Aurora, Colo.; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two sisters, Jessie Humphreys and Winnie Cline; and two brothers, Willis and Richard Oldt.

Services will be held at a later date.&nbsp; Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.

A memorial has been established for Des Moines County Humane Society.

Michael David Menke, 36, of Burlington, died Monday November 28, 2022, at his home.

Born September 6, 1986, in Burlington, he was the son of David and Kathleen Francis Menke. He was baptized in the Catholic faith.

Michael graduated from Burlington High School. He worked numerous jobs and most recently was working at Silgan. He enjoyed working on computers and fishing. He loved taking his dog Jordy to the dog park. He was a die-hard Green Bay Packers fan and he loved spending time with his children when he could.

Survivors include his three daughters Cameron, Molly, and Remy; father David (Kathryn) Menke of Burlington; three half-brothers Tom Patterson of West Burlington, Benjamin (Megan) Patterson of Davenport, Caleb Titus of Burlington; one sister Kim (Nick) LaFauce of West Burlington; grandmother Miriam Francis of Burlington and two stepbrothers Josh and Tim of Pennsylvania.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Kathy Titus, and step-father Craig Titus, son Dayton David Menke, grandfather Bob Francis; grandparents Eugene and Darlene Menke, and aunts Paulette and Vickie.

The funeral service for Michael will be Thursday, December 8 at 1 p.m. at Lunning Chapel with the Very Reverend Father Marty Goetz officiating. Interment will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday, December 7 from 5:30 to 7:30 pm at Lunning Chapel.

James Edward Nelson Sr., 79, of Burlington, died Thursday, December 1, 2022, at the University of Iowa Hospitals &amp; Clinics in Iowa City.

Born April 10, 1943, in Burlington, Iowa, he was the son of Arthur and Nelly Janzen Nelson. On January 1, 1967, he married Marsha Larkins in Burlington.&nbsp;

He graduated from Burlington High School and then attended Iowa State for two years.&nbsp;

Jim was a U.S. Army Veteran, serving during the Vietnam War from July 14, 1966, until April 15, 1968.

Jim's father Arthur, built and started operating the Dairy Queen stores in Burlington in 1947. In 1968, the stores were bought by Jim and Ron and it has been family owned and operated ever since. Jim loved his work and would drive by every day to check on the stores.&nbsp;

When Jim was younger, he enjoyed going hunting and water skiing. He loved going to the casino and playing craps, bowling, golfing, ice fishing, and playing cards and other games. Jim watched the news and weather every day so he would know what to expect at the stores. He loved to travel, especially to Florida with his wife. Jim attended all activities for his grandchildren and loved to take them on trips.

Survivors include his loving wife of 55 years; three children, Jimmy Nelson, Dawn (Matt) Rogerson, and Heather (Edwin) Ellis; eight grandchildren, Morgan (Jarrett) Sykes, Reagan (Jaron) Atteberry, Nathan Nelson, Keaton Chambers, Taran (Michaela) Nelson, Kimber Ellis, Colt Ellis, and Kobe Chambers, four great-grandchildren; sister, Caroline Hoover; sister-in-law, Carolyn Nelson; several nieces, nephews, and cousins.&nbsp;

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Robert and Ronald, and one niece, Connie.&nbsp;
