Nancy Ann Niles, 75, of Carman, Illinois, died Saturday, September 17, 2022, at the Oak Lane Nursing and Rehab in Stronghurst.

Born June 8, 1947, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Andrew and Martha Rehman. She married Thomas Baker and had four children. They later divorced. On October 26, 1990, she married Wayne Niles in Burlington.&nbsp;

She was a graduate of Burlington Notre Dame then attended SCC and the University of Iowa, graduating with a bachelor's degree.

Nancy was a Medical Technologist Supervisor for Burlington Medical Center and then Great River Medical Center for over 30 years.

Nancy was a member of Divine Mercy Parrish and the Carthage Lake Club. She was an avid sports fan and loved golf and playing bridge. She loved to support her children and grandchildren in their sports, musicals, and school events. Nancy loved the outdoors, especially spending time at the cabin on the Mississippi River with her family.&nbsp;

Survivors include her husband, Wayne Niles of Carman, Ill.; three daughters, Meghan (Corey) Stephens, Molly Baker, and Melissa Warner all of Burlington; son, Michael (Audra) Baker of Burlington; four step-children, Marion Niles of Decorah, Todd Niles of West Burlington, Sherril (Dan) Siefken, and Mike Niles, both of Burlington; 13 grandchildren; six siblings; Mary Jane Dideriksen of Fla., Kay Conaway of Fla., Rick Rehman of Burlington, Bob Rehman of Burlington and Betty Clare Rehman of Springfield, Ill.

Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. with the family to receive friends on September 24, at Divine Mercy Parish - St. John the Baptist Church.

The Funeral Mass of the Resurrection for Mrs. Niles will be 11 a.m. Saturday, September 24, at Divine Mercy Parish- St. John the Baptist Church with Father James Flattery as the Celebrant. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery. A time of food and fellowship will be held in the Divine Mercy Parish - St. John's cafeteria following the burial.&nbsp;

Rick Mellinger, 63, of Burlington, died Saturday, September 17, 2022, at his home surrounded by family.

Born December 31, 1958, in Burlington, he was the son of Richard F. and JoAnn McQueen Mellinger. On March 10, 1984, he married Laura Schroeder in Burlington.&nbsp;

Rick was a Burlington High School graduate and later graduated from Northeast Missouri State with his teaching degree.

He worked as an operations manager for most of his career at Walmart Distribution Center in Mount Pleasant.&nbsp;

Rick was a member of Harmony Bible Church, Burlington Campus. He spent a lot of his time on ministry projects through First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), where he was a member.&nbsp; Rick was a natural leader, always volunteering and helping with food donations or assisting with fundraising for various projects. One of his memorable ministry projects was traveling to Nicaragua to build wells for the tribes. He was also the Southeast Iowa Coordinator for Operation Christmas Child, and he enjoyed the opportunity he had to personally deliver the boxes to Uganda. Rick loved coaching his children's sports including baseball, softball, soccer, and wrestling. He enjoyed watching the Iowa Hawkeyes, golfing, playing slow pitch softball, and fantasy football. He especially enjoyed Christmas shopping for his grandkids and spending time with his family.&nbsp;

Survivors include wife of 38 years, Laura Mellinger of Burlington; son, Joel Mellinger of Burlington; two daughters, Emily (Brandon) Diewold of West Burlington and Olivia Mellinger of Burlington; grandchildren,&nbsp; Gabriel Mellinger, Phoenix Mellinger, Quinten Clegg, Elise Clegg, Sequoia Bowling; sister, Becky (Jim) Koehler of Burlington; two brothers, Steve (Lenora) Mellinger of Brunswick, Ga. and Robin (Lou Ann) Mellinger of Hills; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and father-in-law, Neil Schroeder.

Edward Dale Webb Jr., 70, of Burlington, died Thursday, September 15, 2022, at home.

Born December 8, 1951, in Burlington, he was the son of Edward D. and Mable Mary Anna VanStienburg Webb.

He served&nbsp;in the United States Air Force.

Edward liked to shoot darts, play the slot machines at the tavern, and enjoyed spending time at Farney's.

Survivors include his two daughters, Annie Webb of Salem, and Sarah J. Webb of Danville; sister, Sharon K. (Raymond) Barnes of Denmark; brother, Dan D. Webb of Burlington; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Katherine Eileen Wilkerson Kleinkopf, 89, of Danville, passed away Wednesday, September 14, 2022 at the Klein Center in West Burlington.

Eileen was born May 19, 1933, at her parents' home in rural New London. She was the daughter of Fred and Fern Stout Wilkerson.

She attended a one-room schoolhouse, Snyder, then went on to graduate from Danville High School in 1952. She was a member of the Shinar Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Pleasant Grove.

On April 11, 1954, she married Ralph Kleinkopf at the Shinar Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Pleasant Grove with Rev. James Garrett officiating; and they celebrated 68 years of marriage. After her children were all in school, she worked in the Human Resource Department at the IAAP for 26 years. Retiring February 28, 1995.

Eileen was family-oriented as she enjoyed spending time with family and friends. She had many memories of family gatherings growing up on the farm, which then continued at their home in Middletown. Eileen enjoyed playing cards (pinochle), which became a Kleinkopf family tradition. She made many quilts and fleece throws; along with quillows for the church missions. During the holidays, Eileen enjoyed baking Christmas cookies.

She is survived by her husband, Ralph Kleinkopf of Danville; two sons, Ronald (Mimi) Kleinkopf and family of Pine City, Minn., David (Peggy) Kleinkopf and family of Danville; two daughters, twins, Karolyn (Bill) Crawford and family of Winfield., Karen (Kirk) Soukup and family of Middletown; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; one brother Fritz Wilkerson of Burlington.; and one sister, Becky (Terry) Rodeffer of West Burlington.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Fern Wilkerson; son, Mark; infant daughter, Kimberly, and sister, Janet Asmus.

According to Eileen’s wishes, cremation has been entrusted to Lunning Chapel.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Saturday, September 24, at Shinar Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Pleasant Grove. Rev. Shane McCampbell will be officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Following the service, inurnment will be at Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery, Burlington.

Born September 7, 1934, in Fife Lake, Mich., she was the daughter of Raymond and Bertha Ouderkirk. On September 13, 1950, she married Frank Warren Cooper in Vicksburg, Mich. He died January 22, 2012.

Helen worked at a print shop before working at the Iowa Ammunition Plant for about five years. She later worked at Sylvania for two years.

She was a member Divine Mercy Parish and the Knights of Columbus Auxiliary.&nbsp; She was a seamstress, called Bingo, and loved her dog, Buffy.&nbsp; She enjoyed going to garage sales.

Survivors include children, Frank (Bonne) Cooper of Burlington, Carol (Dennis) Fritz, Sandy Cooper both of Burlington, and Pam Eversmeyer of League City, Tex.; 11 grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one son, Joseph Cooper, four brothers, Deverne, Norwal, Edward, and William, and one sister, Rosemary Scharphorn.

Virginia Arlene "Ginny" (Feldman) Murphy, 92, of Burlington, died Tuesday, September 20, 2022, at the Danville Care Center.

Born November 29, 1929, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Edward Carl and Ruth Victoria Distlehorst Feldman. On August 6, 1950, she married Lawrence H. Murphy in Burlington. He died on January 28, 1991. She then spent the next 28 years with her special friend, John Kindig, until his death on June 20, 2020.

Ginny graduated from Sperry High School in 1948 and one of the highlights of her senior year was playing in the state basketball tournament with six of her classmates.&nbsp;&nbsp;

She started work at the Northwestern Bell Telephone Company and then helped her husband on their farm for 40 years. She also worked for Johnston's Truckstop in Mediapolis, The Eagle Gift Shop, which was a part of Balbort Beverage, then receptionist for the Neighborhood Center, Geode R.C.&amp; D., and the YMCA. She was a well-known greeter at Walmart for 15 years and retired at the age of 86.&nbsp;

Ginny was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church where she was also a member of the Sarah Circle and served on the Alter Guild. She helped with the bake sales, where her peach cream pie and streusel coffee cakes were quite favored. She was most recently a member of West Hill Methodist Church, Moose Lodge, and the Eagles Club. She loved music, could play the piano by ear and loved to dance. Ginny enjoyed cooking, baking, and spending time with her family. Her favorite concerts were George Strait, Wayne Newton, and Michael Buble'.

Survivors include her son, Steven Douglas (Lisa) Murphy of Burlington; daughter, Victoria "Vicki" Lynn (Kevin) Beckman of Burlington; honorary daughter, Sue Dixon of Burlington; seven grandchildren, Shannon (Chase) Murphy of Williams Bay, Wis., Brenna Murphy of Burlington, Brennan Murphy of Cedar Rapids, and Rachel, Aiden, Charlotte "Charli" and Kaden Murphy all of Burlington; four great-grandchildren, Rihanna and Aaliyah Campbell, Isabella "Ella" and Americus "Mac" DeLuca.

Besides her husband, Lawrence Murphy, and special friend, John Kindig, she was preceded in death by her parents, daughter, Diana Kay Murphy, and three sisters, Viola Brockert, Bernice Wainwright, and Lorraine Dannenberger.

Jonna Golliday, 59, of Burlington, died Sunday, September 18, 2022, at Savannah Heights in Mount Pleasant.

Born July 4, 1963, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Laverne "Red" Marvin and Wilmetta Golliday.&nbsp;

She worked at Shearer's on the cleaning crew.

Jonna loved to fish, camp, and spend time with her family. Even though she couldn't eat them, she enjoyed hunting for morel mushrooms.&nbsp;

Survivors include her daughter, Sarah (Jacob) Myers of Fort Madison; two grandkids, Lilly &amp; Hunter Myers; brother, Bernie (Jane ) Golliday of Burlington; and sister, Marie Hobby.

A celebration of life will be held Saturday, September 24, from 1 to 4 p.m. at Crapo Park in the shelter house by the pond.

Even though she couldn't eat them, she enjoyed hunting for morel mushrooms.&nbsp;Survivors include her daughter, Sarah (Jacob) Myers of Fort Madison; two grandkids, Lilly &amp; Hunter Myers; brother, Bernie (Jane ) Golliday of Burlington; and sister, Marie Hobby.She is preceded in death by her parents.Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh Crematory.A celebration of life will be held Saturday, September 24, from 1 to 4 p.m. at Crapo Park in the shelter house by the pond.

Marilyn June Cahill, 83, of Burlington, died Tuesday, September 20, 2022, at her home.

Born June 4, 1939, in Fountain Green, Ill., she was the daughter of Lloyd and Nancy Moore Breiner. On July 29, 1967, she married William Patrick Cahill in St. John's Catholic Church in Burlington.&nbsp;

She was a graduate of Blandinsville High School.&nbsp;

Marilyn was a stay-at-home mother. She also worked at Shaffer Pen and IRC.&nbsp;

Marilyn loved to travel all over. She enjoyed creating stained glass work, boating, camping, taking care of plants, and canning. She was very proud of her water garden and koi fish. She loved her pets and would often take her Cocker Spaniels, Candy, Willie, Skipper, and Pepper for rides.

Survivors include her husband, William of Burlington; one daughter, Kimberly (Michael) Pyle of Burlington; two grandsons, Nicholas Pyle and Stephen Pyle; six sisters, Dorothy Plank, Pauline Jones both of LaHarpe, Ill., Charlene Wilson, Deanna Truelove both of Blandinsville, Ill., Patricia Huston of New Boston, Ill., and Jo (Buck) Frye of Muscatine; many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; six sisters, Lucille Luton, Louise Thompson, Thelma Figg, Wyvonne Byers, Virginia Kerfoot, and Joy Byers; and one brother, Gene Breiner.&nbsp;

The Graveside Committal Service for Mrs. Cahill will be 11 a.m., Monday, September 26, at Sacred Heart Cemetery.

A memorial has been established for the PAW Animal Shelter.

Marylin Sue Harris, 84, of Burlington, died Monday, September 19, 2022, at the Azria Health Care Center in Mediapolis.

Born February 23, 1938, in Fort Madison, she was the daughter of Clifford Henry and Erma Ellen Evermon Mott. She married Marrion Harris and together had two children. They later divorced.&nbsp;

Marilyn graduated from Fort Madison High School in 1956 then from Burlington Beauty School in 1957 with a Master of Cosmetology.

She held many jobs over the years. She started out as a beautician from 1957-1995 while working for Sylvania Electronic Tubes from 1961-1965, Homemaker from 1965-1975, Leigh Leopold 1975-1989, then Walmart from 1990-1995. She retired in 1995.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Marilyn loved to craft, sew and cook.&nbsp;

Survivors include her son, Michael (Tamara Bjorklund) Harris of New London; daughter, Jennifer (Robert) Lipper of New London; six grandchildren, Adam Harris, Amber Harris, Brieanna Rose, Scott Rose, Sydney Lipper, and Samuel Harris; five great-grandchildren, Abrieauna, Addison, Kayleigh, Jacob, and Andrew.

The Celebration of Life for Mrs. Harris will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, September 26, at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home.

Gene A. Krenz, 78, of Burlington, died September 12, 2022, at the Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House in Bettendorf.

Born April 4, 1944, in Waterloo, he was the son of Gerald and Bernice Krenz. On June 15, 1968, he married Debbie Ehlers in Iowa City.&nbsp;

Gene received his Bachelor's Degree in finance from Drake University.&nbsp;

He spend his career in banking and retired as the President of First National Bank in 1992.

Gene was a C &amp; E member of First Presbyterian Church. He was also a member of the Rotary Club, YMCA Board, Girl Scout Board, and Burlington Golf Club. He enjoyed golfing, farming, playing Pitch, and working in the yard. Gene loved to spend winters in Florida and spend time with his daughters and grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Debbie Krenz; two daughters, Kari Krenz-Downey (Blane Peterson) of Portland, Ore., and Stacie Woods (Dennis) of Seattle, Wash.; four grandchildren, Rae and Claire Downey, Maya and Sienna Woods.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Jerry Krenz.&nbsp;

The celebration of life for Mr. Krenz will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday, October 14, 2022, at the Burlington Golf Club.

A memorial has been established for the Burlington Golf Club.

Michael Hans "Mike" Larsen, 77, of Burlington, died Thursday, September 8, 2022, at his home.

Born August 3, 1945, in Fort Dodge, he was the son of Harold and Allyson McClurg Larsen. On April 27, 1968, he married Aida Pauline Traglio in Kahoka, Mo.&nbsp;

Mike had owned and operated Larsen Pump Service since 1976. Over the years he has taught his grandson everything he knew, so he could take over the business.&nbsp;

He was of the Baptist faith.&nbsp; He was a member of the Iowa Water Well Association. Mike loved his farm and his family.

Survivors include his wife, Aida; two daughters, Tina Weston of Tampa, Fla., and Tammy Morris of Burlington; one grandson, Michael (Kara) Hobbs of Dodgeville; two step-grandchildren, Tara Weston of Richmond, Vir. and Kristina Nowacowski of Tampa, Fla.; three great-grandsons, Ty and Liam Hobbs and Weston Nowacowski; and one brother, Dana Larsen of Storm Lake.

He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Ellen Berry.

Visitation will be from noon to 7 p.m. with the family to receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, September 15, 2022 at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home.

Judy Hillard, 75, died September 9, 2022, at the Hospice House from complications due to stage four cancer. She was diagnosed February of 2020 and fought hard.

Judy was born in Burlington, Iowa on February 28, 1947. She attended Burlington Community High School. She then worked many years at Hope Haven Area Development Center and then switched her career as an independent insurance agent.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Marilyn Brown and Jack Hillard, her great aunt Joy Dockendorff and her two granddaughters, Ava and Olivia Parker.

She is survived by her&nbsp;brother Craig Hillard (Freda),&nbsp;three children Jeff Gapen, Mark Gapen, and Kathy Parker (Scott), and her seven grandchildren, Hannah Stephens (Blake), Chavana Neuweg (Coby), Danielle Gapen, Andrew Gapen, Jackson Parker, Bennett Parker, and Noah Parker, and her six great-grandchildren.

She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, decorating her home, flower gardens, and watching birds.

According to Judy’s wishes, there will be no funeral services. Cremation has been accorded and entrusted to the care of Lunning Chapel.

Mary Lou Obel Schlosser, 91, of West Burlington, died on September 7th, 2022.&nbsp;

Mary Lou was born on February 27th, 1931 in Corning, Iowa, and moved to Fort Madison, where she graduated from Fort Madison High School. She worked at IAAP as well as being a teacher's aide at West Burlington Elementary School for 13 years. She enjoyed playing piano and did so for many years at Zion UCC in Burlington. Her favorite hobbies were tending to her flower gardens, reading, and her beloved cat, Punky. She belonged to First Presbyterian Church and later Zion UCC, both in Burlington. Church was very important to her.

Mary Lou is survived by her son, Steve Schlosser, of West Liberty. She was predeceased by her parents, Ben and Edith Obel as well as her husband, William Lee Schlosser.

A graveside service is scheduled for 10 a.m. Tuesday, September 13th at Aspen Grove Cemetery in Burlington. Joyce Ellen Crowner, 91, of Burlington, died Thursday, September 8, 2022, at Arbor Court in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa.

Born March 2, 1931, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Elmer and Frances Watts Wilkerson. She married Everett Crowner on October 6, 1951. He died September 5, 1994.

Joyce worked for IRC/TRW for 25 years. She was a long-time member of West Burlington United Methodist Church. She was a work-a-holic and enjoyed spending time doing her yard work and gardening.

She is survived by her three children; Debra Thompson, Randy (Chris) Crowner, and Jeff Crowner, all of Burlington; three grandchildren, Jason (Nicole) Crowner, Matthew (Brandy) Crowner, and Jesse Crowner; five great-grandchildren, Ayra, Esme’, Braxton, Gage, and Blake.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and one brother, Al Wilkerson.

Per her wishes, there will be no formal services for Mrs. Crowner. Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Lunning Chapel. Inurnment will be held in Aspen Grove Cemetery.

Joyce Ellen Crowner

Charles “Mike” Rukgaber, 79, of Independence, Mo. passed away on Wednesday, September 7, 2022, at Centerpoint Hospital with his daughters by his side. 

Born January 20, 1943, in Mount Pleasant, Iowa, he was the son of the late Miles J. Rukgaber and the late Wilma Maxine Ogg Rukgaber both of Mount Pleasant, Ia.

Mike lived in his hometown of Mount Pleasant, Iowa growing up. Mike was a Sports Manager for all sports teams at Mount Pleasant Community High School. He graduated from Iowa Wesleyan College in Mount Pleasant, Ia., and continued his education and was a graduate of the University of Iowa, Iowa City, Iowa with a degree in Civil Engineering. He was the City Engineer of Burlington, Iowa, and Belton, Missouri. He also worked with Larkin and Associates in Kansas City, Missouri, as well as the City of Mount Vernon, Illinois. And retired from his career in Streets &amp; Traffic Department in Kansas City, Mo.

Mike and Linda were married April 17, 1976, in Mount Pleasant, Iowa. Mike and Linda lived in Burlington, Iowa until 1985. They enjoyed traveling to the annual Engineering National Conventions together. They also supported their daughter Nina in high school sporting events throughout the State of Iowa and watched their daughter Roxanne participate in dance. Mike and Linda moved to Belton, Missouri in 1985 and have lived in the Kansas City area for their remaining years to be close to their children and grandchildren. Mike enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren, taking family trips to Branson and Hollister, Missouri, and the “Crazy 8 Rukgaber Revival” Family Trips. He enjoyed watching Iowa Hawkeye football, Kansas City Chiefs, and Kansas City Royals baseball. He was an avid “puzzle extraordinaire” and has many of his framed creations on display at the Villages of Jackson Creek Skilled Care Facility. There were no puzzles or numbers/equations that he could not conquer. He liked his occasional trips to the casinos. At his skilled care facility, he was known as the “Honorary Mayor” and President of the Resident Relations Committee and known throughout the care center as a patient experience leader for others.

He was preceded in death by his wife Linda June (Rule) Rukgaber, (formally of Burlington, Iowa) and currently living in Independence, Mo. He had two daughters, Nina Mewes (Steven Noe) formally of Burlington, Iowa now residing in Lake Winnebago, Missouri, and Roxanne Mewes DeLong of Racket, Missouri; three grandchildren, Jessica Noe (Brandon Kalwei), Greenwood, Missouri, Joshua Noe (Jenna Noe) of Columbia, Missouri, Katelyn DeLong, Oak Grove, Missouri, and two great-grandchildren Adalynn June Kalwei and Hudson Lee Kalwei, two sisters Sharon Rukgaber Messer (Robert Messer) of Mount Pleasant, Ia., Diana Rukgaber Rodgers (Ernest Rodgers) of Truth or Consequences, New Mexico, and the late Linda Rukgaber McWilliams (Lee McWilliams) of Mount Pleasant, Ia., his brother in law James Lee Rule (Phyllis Rule) of Macomb, Ill. He was also survived by his nieces and nephews: Mike Messer, Lisa Messer Goody (Jason Goody), Rhonda Kinney Longworth (Paul Longworth), Thomas (TJ) Kinney (Sonja Kinney), Katie Rodgers Walter (Ryan Walter), Kyla Rodgers Stephens (Brian Stephens), great niece and nephew Miles and Macie Stephens.

The funeral service for Mike was held on Saturday, September 10 at the First United Methodist Church, Mount Pleasant, Iowa. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery in Burlington, Iowa immediately following. Mike was a Sports Manager for all sports teams at Mount Pleasant Community High School. He graduated from Iowa Wesleyan College in Mount Pleasant, Ia., and continued his education and was a graduate of the University of Iowa, Iowa City, Iowa with a degree in Civil Engineering. He was the City Engineer of Burlington, Iowa, and Belton, Missouri. He also worked with Larkin and Associates in Kansas City, Missouri, as well as the City of Mount Vernon, Illinois. And retired from his career in Streets &amp; Traffic Department in Kansas City, Mo.Mike and Linda were married April 17, 1976, in Mount Pleasant, Iowa. Mike and Linda lived in Burlington, Iowa until 1985. They enjoyed traveling to the annual Engineering National Conventions together. They also supported their daughter Nina in high school sporting events throughout the State of Iowa and watched their daughter Roxanne participate in dance. Mike and Linda moved to Belton, Missouri in 1985 and have lived in the Kansas City area for their remaining years to be close to their children and grandchildren. Mike enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren, taking family trips to Branson and Hollister, Missouri, and the “Crazy 8 Rukgaber Revival” Family Trips. He enjoyed watching Iowa Hawkeye football, Kansas City Chiefs, and Kansas City Royals baseball. He was an avid “puzzle extraordinaire” and has many of his framed creations on display at the Villages of Jackson Creek Skilled Care Facility. There were no puzzles or numbers/equations that he could not conquer. He liked his occasional trips to the casinos. At his skilled care facility, he was known as the “Honorary Mayor” and President of the Resident Relations Committee and known throughout the care center as a patient experience leader for others.He was preceded in death by his wife Linda June (Rule) Rukgaber, (formally of Burlington, Iowa) and currently living in Independence, Mo. He had two daughters, Nina Mewes (Steven Noe) formally of Burlington, Iowa now residing in Lake Winnebago, Missouri, and Roxanne Mewes DeLong of Racket, Missouri; three grandchildren, Jessica Noe (Brandon Kalwei), Greenwood, Missouri, Joshua Noe (Jenna Noe) of Columbia, Missouri, Katelyn DeLong, Oak Grove, Missouri, and two great-grandchildren Adalynn June Kalwei and Hudson Lee Kalwei, two sisters Sharon Rukgaber Messer (Robert Messer) of Mount Pleasant, Ia., Diana Rukgaber Rodgers (Ernest Rodgers) of Truth or Consequences, New Mexico, and the late Linda Rukgaber McWilliams (Lee McWilliams) of Mount Pleasant, Ia., his brother in law James Lee Rule (Phyllis Rule) of Macomb, Ill. He was also survived by his nieces and nephews: Mike Messer, Lisa Messer Goody (Jason Goody), Rhonda Kinney Longworth (Paul Longworth), Thomas (TJ) Kinney (Sonja Kinney), Katie Rodgers Walter (Ryan Walter), Kyla Rodgers Stephens (Brian Stephens), great niece and nephew Miles and Macie Stephens.The funeral service for Mike was held on Saturday, September 10 at the First United Methodist Church, Mount Pleasant, Iowa. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery in Burlington, Iowa immediately following. Vonsuere “Phoebe” Deanne Thompson, 55, died August 27, 2022, in Joplin, Mo.

Born in Bent Harbor, Mich., December 25, 1966.

She attended school in Michigan and later relocated to Joplin, Mo.

She loved to be around her family and friends. Her grandchildren held a special place in her heart. She was a jack of all trades with a unique style, never forgetting a hat!

She is survived by her children; Augusta Daniels of Joplin, Mo., Arlene Doss of Flint, Mich., Tommie Thompson of Joplin, Mo. and Georgia Jones of Cape Girardeau, Mo.; fifteen grandchildren; one brother, Carlos Thompson; father, Thurman Watson of Cape Girardeau, Mo.; significant other, Tommie Lee “Mr. Tom” Theus; special cousins, Teresa Wilson, Monica Thompson and Bernard Wilson; niece DaReisha Thompson; nephews Carlos Thompson Jr. and Deonte Thompson.

Phoebe was preceded in death by her mom Georgia Thompson who she honored and cherished deeply.

The Homegoing Celebration for Vonsuere was held at 12 p.m. Friday, September 9, at Lunning Chapel. Interment will be held at Aspen Grove Cemetery.

Chris Nichols, 68, of Burlington, died Sunday, September 4, 2022, at the Iowa City VA Medical Center in Iowa City.

Born October 24, 1953, in Oskaloosa, Ia., he was the son of Dean Nichols and Josephine Hamilton Fageol.&nbsp;

He received his bachelor of art degree from Central University, majoring in Physics and receiving minors in Chemistry and Mathematics.

He was a U.S. Marines Veteran, serving from 1977 to 1983. He was also a U.S. Navy veteran, serving from 1987 to 1996.

Chris worked in aerospace engineering and research and served a combined 16 years in the United States Navy and Marine Corps.

Chris was a member of the Naval Reserve Association, Marine Corps League- Hamilton Walters Detachment, International Council on Systems Engineering (INCOSE), American Institute of Physics (SPS), Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, American Chemical Society, U.S. Naval Institute, Naval Helicopter Association, Sons of the American Revolution, and CircleK; a college student affiliate of the Kiwanis. He enjoyed being outside playing tennis, going on runs, skiing, swimming, camping, hiking, bicycling, and most other outdoor activities. Chris enjoyed model building, woodworking, and refurbishing antiques. He especially loved playing guitar and flying.&nbsp;

Survivors include his mother, Josephine Fageol; daughter, Jennifer A. (Kevin) Talley of Burlington; son, Robert C. Nichols of Mt Pleasant; four siblings, Mary (Tom) Bowen of Yarmouth, Jim Fageol of Burlington, Gigi (Tony) Robertson of Burlington, and Kelly Fageol of Burlington.

He was preceded in death by his father and uncle Jim Nichols.

Visitation will be from noon to 7 p.m. with the family to receive friends from&nbsp;5 to 7 p.m. Friday, September 16, at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home.

The funeral service for Mr. Nichols will be 10 a.m. Saturday, September 17, at Christ Episcopal Church with Father Carl Mann officiating.&nbsp;

Chris Devon Downs, 38, of Burlington, died Monday, September 5, 2022, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born January 1, 1984, in Burlington, Ia., he was the son of Carlos and Karen Greenup Downs.&nbsp;&nbsp;

He attended Burlington High School. While in school, he was involved in many sports. He broke a record for fastest in Track.

Chris enjoyed sports, especially basketball, and racing his friends for fun. He and his brother, David started making music together and would write songs about their childhoods and growing up in Woodlawn. He was interested in shoes and fashion and looking "super fly". Chris had many friends and enjoyed spending time with them. He loved to make people laugh and when he was with his friend Ruppert, they were like Mike and Martin from Bad Boys. The most important thing to Chris was his family and spending time with them. He was the spitting image of his grandfather and loved visiting his grandmother every day.&nbsp;

Survivors include his father, Carlos (Sharockia) Downs; mother, Karen (Kevin McCoy) Downs; three children Kobe Edmunds, Malik Barker, and Mila Downs; one brother, David Michael Turner Jr.; five sisters, Nicole (Khari Mathew) Humphries, Tamara Greenup, Kierra&nbsp; Greenup, Shalee Brown, and Natreia Brown; six aunts, Dorothy Stout, Theresa Greenup, Kay Greenup, Christy (Kenneth) Poullard, Mona Jones, and Brenda (Floyd) Clack; six uncles, William (Charyne) Greenup, Jr., Lewis Jones, Jose Jones, Douglas Jones, Lyncha Downs, John Downs, and Stan&nbsp; Downs; several nieces and nephews including, Dashawna, Bryan, Davis, Jordan, Savoy and many cousins.&nbsp;

Alicia Naylor Goehring, 61, of San Francisco, died August 23, 2022, in the arms of her loving husband, Jerry, after a brief and courageous battle with cancer.

Alicia was born September 15, 1960, to Jack and Alice Naylor. She graduated from Burlington High School in 1978.&nbsp; She received her BA in History/Business from Coe College and her MA in Urban and Regional Planning from Ball State.

Alicia married Jerry Goehring in 1981.&nbsp; He survives her as do her three sisters, Jan (Peter) Allan and Pat (Bill) Larsen, both of DePere, Wisconsin, and Debbie (Andy) Opiekun of Burlington, brother-in-law, Duane and his family of Destin, Florida along with several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great-nephews.

Alicia had several remarkable achievements in her career starting with being the first Director of the Burlington National Main Street Program.

She went on to be Director of the Bureau of Downtown Development, Director of the Division of Historical Preservation and held various Director positions at the Wisconsin Historical Society during her 32 years in Wisconsin.&nbsp; She then took a "retirement job" in San Francisco as Executive Director/ CEO of the California Historical Society.

A Celebration of Life will be held in San Francisco.&nbsp;

A Celebration of Life will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, September 17, following at 9:30 a.m. visitation at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home. Donna Norma Hobbs, 91, of Burlington, died Monday, September 5, 2022, at the Klein Center in West Burlington.

Born November 5, 1930, in Yellow Springs Township, Ia., she was the daughter of John Henry and Evelyn Deloris Lyons Mehaffy. On February 5, 1950, she married Richard William Hobbs in Burlington. He died on August 18, 1992.

She was a 1948 graduate of Burlington High School.&nbsp;

Donna worked at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant for 37 years.&nbsp; She retired as an administrative assistant in 1987.

She was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church.&nbsp; She was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan and enjoyed knitting and reading. She loved animals, especially dogs. Donna liked to do crosswords, play cards, and enjoyed looking up her family genealogy and creating books based on what she found.

Survivors include her brother, Kenneth Mehaffy of Cedar Rapids; sister, Joyce Davis of&nbsp;Burlington, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband she was preceded in death by her parents, sister, Ramona Byerly, brothers-in-law, Dale Byerly, Marvin Davis, and Bernard (Bub) Wagner; sister-in-law, Jeannette Mehaffy; two nephews, Marvin Mehaffy and Keith Byerly.

Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. with the family to receive friends Monday, September 12, at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home.
