Michael E. Romkey, 78, of Coralville, died Saturday, Nov. 20, 2021, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. Born Feb. 13, 1943, in Iowa, he was the son of Donald and Peggy Romkey. He served in the Navy during the Vietnam conflict. He married Linda Joyce Genth on Aug. 3, 1968. Mike retired from J.I. Case after 35 years. He was a member of Faith Baptist Church in Iowa City. He is survived by his wife; daughter, Rebecca Caskey of Muscatine; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Private graveside services were held at Aspen Grove Cemetery.

Darrel Dean Jones, 82, of Burlington died Saturday, Nov. 27, 2021, at Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center.

Debra Sue Jay Westlake Mason, 66, of Burlington, died Saturday, Nov. 27, 2021, at her home.

Born Dec. 5, 1954, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Franklin "Wacky" and Katherine "Kotzy" Hoschek Jay. On June 22, 1974, she married Kenneth Dale Westlake at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Burlington. He died on July 11, 1990. On January 29, 2001, she married G. Ed Mason at the Great River Klein Center.&nbsp;

She was a 1973 graduate of Burlington High School, and attended SCC to get certificates in both their culinary program and their recreation program.

She was the recreation director at the Great River Klein Center.

She was a member of Triker's of the Third Wheel, The American Legion, several card clubs, The Eagles Club, and Hamilton-Walters Marine Corps League.&nbsp;

Survivors include her second husband; one daughter, Heidi Sue Westlake of Burlington; one son, K. Kirk Westlake of Florida; three siblings, Kathy Jay of Wever, John E. Jay of Burlington, and Julie Luttenegger of Burlington; and three grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until 12 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 2 at Prugh-Thielen Funeral Home.

Larry D. Mincer, 81, of Burlington, died Wednesday, Nov. 24, 2021, at Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House.

Born Sept. 17, 1940, in Washington, he was the son of Maynard, F. “Mike” and Doreen Fairlie Mincer. Larry was raised by his grandparents, Ralph and Dorothy Fairlie.

On Sept. 3, 1960, Larry married Mary Kay Montgomery in Fort Madison..

Larry was a graduate of Sigourney Iowa High School. He was in law enforcement for nine and a half years. He drove trucks for the next 30 years, retiring April 1, 2006.

He was a member of Divine Mercy Parish, the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 150, and Knights of Columbus.

Survivors include his wife; daughter, Susan Marshall of Ankeny; son, Bobby Mincer of Burlington; sister, Janet Higdon of Fort Madison; and five grandchildren.

The memorial service for Larry Mincer will be Thursday, Dec. 2 at 11 a.m. at Lunning Chapel with Fr. James Flattery and Fr. Patrick Hilgendorf officiating. The family will receive friends from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service. There will be a private family inurnment at Sacred Heart Cemetery.

For over 40 years, she was the secretary for St John’s Catholic Church and Sacred Heart Cemetery. She was a member of Divine Mercy Parish and sang in the church choir. Dorothy volunteered with Birthright, St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry, and sang with Bel Canto. Survivors include son, Charles Buhmeyer of Burlington; daughter, Beth Brown of Burlington; sister, Mary Ann Frank of Burlington; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

There will be a Rosary beginning at 4:30 p.m. with family visitation from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 26 at Lunning Chapel. Mass of Christian burial will be at St. John’s Catholic Church on Saturday, Nov. 27 at 1:00 p.m. Father James Flattery will officiate. Kathryn W. Klaus, 75, of Burlington, died Wednesday, Nov. 24, 2021 at The Madison in Fort Madison.

Born Sept. 17, 1946, in Fairfield, she was the daughter of Eryl and Edith Gingles VanDyke.

Kathryn married Tom Crossett in June 1964. They later divorced. She married David Klaus on June 25, 1995, in Denver, Colo.

She was a graduate of Columbus Junction High School in 1964 and was a graduate of Dayton School of Hair Design in Burlington. Kathryn was a self-employed cosmetologist for 10 years, retiring in 2011.

Survivors include her husband; daughters, Julia Phelps of Houston, Texas, and Amanda Smith of Burlington; stepson, David Klaus of Burlington; brother, George VanDyke of Nichols; half sister, Shirley Reynolds of Cedar Rapids; 10 grandchildren; and 18 great grandchildren. According to her wishes, Kathryn’s body has been deeded to the University of Iowa for medical research.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Born April 4, 1953, in Fort Madison, she was the daughter of Edward Lee and Dorothy Frances Schroeder Scott. On Dec. 17, 1989, she married Carl Parker in Salem. He died on June 14, 1999.

She was a graduate of Burlington High School.&nbsp;

Beverly was a homemaker and helped around their farm.&nbsp;

Survivors include her son, Edward Parker of Wapello; daughter, Delanie Parker-Brider of Monmouth, Ill.; two brothers, Jeffrey Scott and Timothy Scott, both of Burlington; one sister, Annette Scott Rankin of West Burlington; and five grandchildren.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh Crematory.

Survivors include her husband; four children, Donna Miller, Larry Miller, and Meta Miller Dixon, all of Burlington, and Ginny Atchley of Danville; one sister, Melody Peterson of Burlington; one brother, Earnie Timmerman of Burlington; 11 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Larry E. Clawson, 82, of Danville died Tuesday, Nov. 16, 2021 at Danville Care Center. Born Nov. 3, 1939, in Butte, Mont., he was the son of Ernest Lavern and Nellie Dowling Clawson. He married Harriet Potter; they later divorced. Larry worked for Hughes Aircraft and as an engineer before moving to Nebraska. He then began working for Roto-Rooter in Omaha, Neb. Larry enjoyed volunteering for the Red Cross and the animal shelter, where he was responsible for transportation of pets from shelter to shelter. Survivors include one son, Eugene Clawson, and one daughter, Annette Clawson, both of Middletown; and one brother, Ken Clawson of Montana. Cremation has been accorded and entrusted to the care of Lunning Chapel. Inurnment will be at a later date at Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery.

Larry enjoyed volunteering for the Red Cross and the animal shelter, where he was responsible for transportation of pets from shelter to shelter. Survivors include one son, Eugene Clawson, and one daughter, Annette Clawson, both of Middletown; and one brother, Ken Clawson of Montana. Richard Mellinger, 90, of Burlington, died Wednesday, Nov. 17, 2021, at Heritage Nursing and Rehab in Cedar Rapids.

Born Oct. 3, 1931, in Burlington, he was the son of Fred William and Sophia Elizabeth Stoller Mellinger. He graduated from Burlington Community High School in 1949.&nbsp; On May 29, 1955, he married JoAnn McQueen in Burlington. JoAnn died November 12, 2005.

Richard served in the United States Army and was stationed in Germany during the Korean war.

His first job was at Sweetheart Bakery in Burlington. Richard later became a life insurance salesman and financial planner for Minnesota Mutual/Minnesota Life.

He was a member of First Christian Church, American Legion, and a volunteer with the Senior Citizen Group. Richard was very involved with the Burlington Community School District, was the first president of the Burlington High School Athletic Booster Club, and loved announcing for football, wrestling, track, softball, and baseball. Richard was very proud to have the BHS wrestling tournament named after him.

Survivors include his four children, Becky Koehler of Burlington, Robin Mellinger of Hills, Rick Mellinger of Burlington, and Steve Mellinger of Brunswick, Ga.; 12 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Loretta Dixon of The Villages, Fla., and Marjorie Roth of Waukee.

Visitation will be from noon until 7 p.m. with the family to receive friends from 4 until 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 22 at Prugh-Thielen Funeral Home.

Warren Gustav Hohmbraker, 94, of Sperry, died Wednesday, Nov.17, 2021, at Prairie Ridge Care and Rehabilitation in Mediapolis.

Born May 18, 1927, at his family's homestead outside of Sperry, he was the son of William G. and Alma Young Hohmbraker. He married Maxine Myers and they later divorced. On May 27, 1954, he married Mary Louise Vollmer in Mediapolis. She later passed Dec. 25, 2020.

Warren was a lifelong farmer. He started working on his family's farm after he finished eighth grade at Piney Wood County School.

He went to the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Mediapolis and later attended Kingston Methodist Church. He was a member of the American Farm Bureau Federation, American Hereford Association, Mississippi Valley Morgan Horse Club, Hawkeye Morgan Horse Club, and Louisa County Saddle Club. Survivors include his daughter, Marvalene Cousins of Burlington; one son, Kenneth Hohmbraker of Danville; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be at 10 until 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov.23 at Prugh-Thielen Funeral Home.

Rosel McCandless Smith, 93, of Mediapolis, died Monday, Nov. 15, 2021, at the Azria Health Care Center in Mediapolis.

Born September 16, 1928, in Bieber, West Germany, she was the daughter of Kilian Willibald and Theresia&nbsp; Schrodt Kohl. She married John J. McCandless in Offenbach, am Main Germany at Castle Offenbach. They later divorced. She then married Kenneth Smith; he died September 8,1990.

She completed general schooling and trade school in Bieber, and Offenbach am Main, West Germany. She became a U.S. citizen and brought her parents to the United States.

Rosel also had a love for business, sales, and fashion, so that was the path she chose after trade school.&nbsp;

She was a past officer of the Women of the Moose and the International Friendship Club.&nbsp;

She attended Zion United Church of Christ for many years, but came to New Life Family Church through being chosen by their youth group.&nbsp;

Survivors include her children, Marika Nunnikoven and John McCandless; five grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 5 until 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 22 at New Life Family Church, where the family will receive friends.

Merrill A. Miller, 99, of Burlington, died Tuesday, Nov. 16, 2021, at Oakview Care and Rehabilitation Center in Burlington. Born May 2, 1922, in Burlington, he was the son of Clarence C. and Alberta Fisher Miller. He married Florence Douglas in Caerphilly, South Wales, Great Britain, on June 19, 1944. She died November 3, 1985. Merrill served in the Army during WWII as a Sgt. Tech 5. He worked as a brakeman for Burlington Northern and a switchman for CB&amp;Q railroads for 46 years until his retirement in 1983. He was of the Roman Catholic faith. He was a member of the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainman; VFW; UTU, where he served as the grievance chairman for many years; and the Eagles Aerie #150. Survivors include his four children, Barbara Schoell of Overland Park, Kan., Lillian Krehbiel of Omaha, Neb., Margette Wiemann of Burlington, and Merrill “Pete” Miller of Houston, Tex.; his longtime friend, Mary Flieg of Sigourney; 10 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren.

Terry "Chief" Neff, 67, of Burlington, died Monday, Nov. 15, 2021, at Blessing Hospital in Quincy, Ill.

Born Dec. 21, 1953, in LaHarpe, Ill., he was the son of Eldon H. and Frances A. Bundy Neff. On July 9, 2005, he married Sheila Simmons in Burlington.&nbsp;

Terry graduated from Southern High School, Stronghurst, Ill., in 1972. Terry was employed by JI Case immediately following graduation and retired from the company after 38 years. He was an active member of UAW and district coordinator for ABATE.&nbsp;

Survivors include his wife; children, Ivan Simmons and Jerrid Simmons, both of Cedar Rapids, Josh Simmons, Micheal Simmons, Heather Guinard, and Phillip Simmons, all of Burlington; 12 grandchildren; his father, Eldon Neff of Burlington; one brother, Gary Neff of Burlington; and three sisters, Jan Kimble of Charlotte, N.C., Tina Baker of Roscoe, Ill., and Barbara Boyle of Montezuma, Iowa.

On July 9, 2005, he married Sheila Simmons in Burlington.&nbsp;Terry graduated from Southern High School, Stronghurst, Ill., in 1972. Terry was employed by JI Case immediately following graduation and retired from the company after 38 years. He was an active member of UAW and district coordinator for ABATE.&nbsp;Survivors include his wife; children, Ivan Simmons and Jerrid Simmons, both of Cedar Rapids, Josh Simmons, Micheal Simmons, Heather Guinard, and Phillip Simmons, all of Burlington; 12 grandchildren; his father, Eldon Neff of Burlington; one brother, Gary Neff of Burlington; and three sisters, Jan Kimble of Charlotte, N.C., Tina Baker of Roscoe, Ill., and Barbara Boyle of Montezuma, Iowa.Visitation will be on Saturday, Nov. 20 from 5 until 6 p.m. with the family to receive friends at Prugh-Thielen Funeral Home.The funeral service for Chief will be 6 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 20 at Prugh-Thielen Funeral Home with Father Carl Mann officiating.&nbsp; Cremation will be entrusted to the care of Prugh Crematory following the service.&nbsp;In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice.

Ronald Duane Ellerhoff, 74 years old, of Middletown, passed away on Sunday, Nov. 14, 2021, at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center, in Peoria, Ill.

Born on March 7, 1947, Ron was the son of Milton C. Ellerhoff and Doris M. Sater Ellerhoff in Burlington. He was a 1965 graduate of Burlington High School and earned a degree in business and economics from Iowa Wesleyan College of Mount Pleasant in 1969, as well as a Doctor of Jurisprudence degree from Drake University in 1985.

On Aug. 19, 1967, he married Lorene Rose Jacobsmeier in Fort Madison. Ron served in the Army as a clerk during his deployment to Vietnam in the early 70s. Later, he served and retired with the rank of Captain from the Army Reserves JAG Corps. In addition to the military, he worked as a home loan representative, a real estate broker, and, for the past 36 years, as an independent attorney. Over the years, he held numerous positions or memberships: ILLOWA Scuba Club, Des Moines County Bar Association, Middletown City Council, Middletown Presbyterian Church, National Rifle Association, TriState Gun Club, Community Action of Southeast Iowa board, Burlington Optimist Club, and Boys Scouts of America (during youth and as an adult leader). He most recently attended the First Congregational Church of Burlington. Ron is survived by his wife; three children, Jena Ellerhoff of Middletown, Lea McCormick of Mount Pleasant, and Jared Ellerhoff of Marion; two sisters, Elyce Riney of Middletown and Becky Davis of Burlington; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

The Memorial Service for Ron will take place Saturday, Nov. 20 at 11 a.m. at Simple Gathering (formerly Middletown Presbyterian Church) In Middletown. Visitation will take place from 6 to 8 p.m., Friday, Nov. 19 at Lunning Chapel.
