Richard A. “Murph” Murphy, 70, of West Burlington, died Monday, April 8, 2024, at his home.

Born July 28, 1953, in Burlington, he was the son of Richard E. and Celia J. Murphy. He married Martha Runnells and they later divorced. He then married Lorinda Richards. They later divorced.

Murph worked as a heavy equipment operator with IUOE # 150 for many years. He was a member of A.B.A.T.E. District 18.

Murph was undoubtedly the “life of the party” and always at the center of attention, sharing his “true stories”, telling tales and offering his unfiltered best advice, “I guar on tee”. He has left a large void in this world, and will be greatly missed.

He is survived by his two dogs, Harley and Cheyanne; his mother, Celia Murphy; brother Randall Murphy, three sisters, Rhonda Murphy-Doud, Ruth Garrett and Robin Murphy; several nieces and nephews; and his numerous “baby girls”, “baby dolls” and riding brothers.

He was preceded in death by his father and two sons Joel Murphy and Jason Freeman.

A celebration of life will be held on Friday, May 31 at the Burlington Eagles #150 beginning at 4 p.m. A memorial has been established.

Cremation has been accorded and entrusted to the care of Lunning Chapel.

Francis Eugene “Gene” Snowden, 85, of Burlington, died Friday, April 5, 2024, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in West Burlington.

Born April 24, 1938, in McDowell County, Ill., he was the son of Leroy and Jennie Snowden. He served in the Army for 6-1/2 years.

He married Debra Riherd on May 26, 1984, at First United Church of Christ in Burlington. He was a member of West Avenue Baptist Church.

Gene worked various places throughout his life and retired from Exide Battery after 27 years in 1999. He was the founder of D &amp; G Concessions and served as Worthy President for the Burlington Eagles Aerie #150, as Vice Chairman for the Casebine Credit Union Board and bingo chairperson for the Eagles for many years.

He enjoyed time with family and his Pomeranian “Cinnamon”. He was loved by many.

Survivors include his wife, Debra Snowden; two sons, Brad (Leslie) Snowden and Bruce Snowden; daughter Gina Snowden and several sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews that were like grandchildren to him and aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and two sisters.

The funeral service for Gene will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 12 at Lunning Chapel. The Rev. Steven Parker will officiate. The Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard will conduct military rites. Interment will be in Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, April 11 at Lunning Chapel where the family will receive friends.

Francis Eugene “Gene” Snowden

Reed Ross Haeger, 78, of West Point, died Friday, April 5, 2024, at Birkwood Village in Fort Madison, surrounded by his family.

Reed was born on July 28, 1945, in Oak Park, Ill., the son of Reed “Ross” Haeger, Sr. and Mary Phelan Haeger. On Aug. 10, 1968, he married Susan Teresa Hanley in Lewistown, Mont. She preceded him in death on Jan. 15, 2024, after fifty-five years of marriage.

As a boy, Reed spent summers at his grandparents home outside of Rhinelander, Wisconsin at Haeger’s Lodge on Lake Thompson. Upon graduation from Fenwick High School in Oak Park, Reed spent a summer on the Whitetail Ranch outside of Missoula, Mont. working as a ranch hand. This experience provided a lifetime of stories and a deep personal connection to the cowboy persona. Reed attended St. Ambrose University in Davenport, Iowa receiving his Bachelor’s Degree in education. Accepting a gift from his father upon graduation, Reed spent three months traveling Europe. Through a college roommate, he learned of and accepted a teaching position at Marquette High School in West Point where he would teach English for nine years. After teaching, Reed dabbled as a restaurateur managing the West Point Knights of Columbus, Donnellson Green Acres Golf Club and as owner/proprietor of Reed’s Pizza in West Point. He finished his full-time working career at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant in Middletown after twenty years. Reed and Sue purchased the Corner Tap in 1983. In August of 2023, in fine West Point Sweet Corn Festival festive fashion, they celebrated forty years in business.

From area bass fishing tournaments to weekend fishing getaways with Sue, Reed was an avid fisherman. He transitioned from water to land in the game of golf, a pastime passion he renewed with a vengeance. His dedication and knowledge for the game was intense, perhaps even driving a patron or two out of the Corner Tap with his incessant talk of it! His love of reading was evidenced by the many books that went through his hands, thousands and thousands of pages turned. Reed had not only the gift of word crafting, but with those page turning fingers, he would use his woodworking craft to spend hours in his basement making gifts for family and friends, especially his grandkids. Reed was most proud of his family. Four children, thirteen grandchildren, two great grandchildren and counting… Always the teacher, always the storyteller, lighting up at the opportunity to share with them is what he loved best.

Reed is survived by his three daughters: Kathleen “Katie” (Chris) Dailey of Terre Haute, Ind., Jennifer “Jenny” Steffensmeier (Randy Larson) of West Point, Megan (Bill) Kruse of West Point; son: Ross (Erin) Haeger of Burlington; thirteen grandchildren: Daniel Dailey, Jack Dailey, Claire Dailey, Isaac Steffensmeier (Courtney Abolt), Rachel Steffensmeier (Julian Holmes), Sarah (CJ) Richardson, Aaron (Taylor) Steffensmeier, Nathan Steffensmeier (Larissa Ferrill), Elton Kruse (Madelyn Swigart), Owen Kruse (Katie Beach), Emmett Kruse, Liam Haeger and Gordon Haeger; two great-grandchildren: Quincy and Calvin Richardson; three sisters: Beth (Paul) Reis of Wheaton, Illinois, Jane (Greg) Zimmerman of Downers Grove, Ill., Anne Haeger of Marion, Iowa and one brother: Mark (Julie) Haeger of Downers Grove, Ill.

Reed was preceded in death by his parents; sisters-in-law: Sister Kathleen Hanley, CHM, Laurie Voelker; brothers-in-law: Mark Hanley, Edward Hanley, Eugene Foecke and son-in-law: Ben Steffensmeier.

A visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Friday, April 12, 2024,&nbsp; at Schmitz Funeral Home in West Point.

A time of remembrance will be held at 11 a.m. Friday with Father Gary Beckman officiating at Schmitz Funeral Home in West Point. A time of food and fellowship will be held at the West Point American Legion after the burial. Following the luncheon, a celebration of life will be held at the Corner Tap.

Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery in West Point.

In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established in his memory for Southeast Iowa Hospice.

Johanna Marie “Joy” Tracy, 88, of West Burlington, died Saturday, April 6, 2024, surrounded by family at her daughter's home in Burlington.

Born April 16, 1935, in Batavia, Ill., she was the daughter of Charles Elmer and Margurette Mahara Beckman. On April 29, 1955, she married Arnold Thomas Tracy in , Batavia Ill.. He later died July 21, 2019.

Johanna was girl scout leader in West Burlington, as well as Burlington. She was a Sunday school teacher at Flint Hills Church of the Nazarene. She coached girls softball and was a member of the Athletic Boosters of West Burlington. In addition to being a loyal Cubs and Bears fan, she also bowled and golfed for the Case Wives Team. Johanna loved to cross stitch, often times making gifts for friends and family. She was an avid reader, publishing two of her own books. When she was not watching or participating in sports, Johanna enjoyed spending time at &nbsp;her property in Van Buren County with her husband.&nbsp;

Survivors include son, Allan Lee (Dora) Tracy of Plover, WI, son, Thomas Arnold Tracy of Burlington, IA, daughter, Kim Colleen (LeRoy) Hurka of Gladstone, IL, daughter, Margurette Marie Sereda of Burlington, IA, daughter, Brenda Tracy (Jerry) Maus of Lake of The Ozarks, MO, daughter, Teresa Joy (Scott) Neuweg of Fort Madison, IA ; 16 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren; 1 great-great grandchild and one on the way; one sister, Alice Rose (Larry) Locke of Sheldon, IA; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband Arnold, her parents, three brothers, Charles Elmer Beckman Jr., James Henry Beckman, Oliver David Beckman; two sisters, Mildred Esther Carter and Gene Edith Aldrich; one great grandson, Lawrence Maus; and one Son-in-law, Stephen Sereda.

Brady Paul Christ, 20, of Burlington, died Friday, April 5, 2024 at his home, after a lifelong battle with Adrenoleukodystrophy.

Born May 30, 2003, in West Burlington, he was the son of Brian Joseph and Kristen Michelle Chesterfield Christ.&nbsp;

He was a 2021 graduate of Burlington Notre Dame High School. Brady assisted his father with the family business, working on investments to build capital for charitable organizations.&nbsp;

He was of Catholic faith and was a member of Divine Mercy Parish. Brady enjoyed skateboarding, playing poker, gaming with his friends, trading stocks and playing with his cats. He was always making everyone laugh. Most importantly, he was very strongly devoted to a life of prayer and worship.&nbsp;

Survivors include his parents, Brian and Kristen Christ of Burlington; sister, Morgan Christ of Burlington; maternal grandmother, Diana Chesterfield of Mustang, OK; and paternal grandparents, Sue Ellen and Larry Christ of Burlington.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Burton Paul "Poppy" Chesterfield and his best friend, Garrett Brockway.

Visitation will be from 12 to 7 p.m.with a 2 p.m. rosary service Friday, April 12, 2024, at Prugh Funeral Service, 3940 Division Street.&nbsp;

The Funeral Mass of the Resurrection for Brady will be 1 p.m. Saturday, April 13, 2024, at Divine Mercy Parish-St. Paul's Catholic Church with Fr. Jake Greiner as the Celebrant. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery in Burlington.

A memorial has been established for ALD Connect, located in Middleton, MA, to further research for Adrenoleukodystrophy, a rare disease about which there is still much to be learned. Brady voluntarily spent his lifetime participating in many clinical studies to advance the body of knowledge on this disease for the benefit of future generations.

Brady Paul Christ

Betty L. Beckman, 96, of Burlington, died Monday, April 8, 2024, at the OakView Nursing Home and Rehabilitation in Burlington.

Born July 26, 1927, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Raymond and Sarah Wilkerson Linquist. On Aug. 21, 1948, she married Robert P. Beckman at St. Patrick's Church in Burlington. He preceded her in death on Aug. 11, 2015.

She graduated from Burlington High School and worked at the telephone company as a switchboard operator until she married. She was a homemaker who raised 8 sons and 1 daughter with Robert at the same house on Agency where she remained for 67 years until her passing.&nbsp;

She was a devout Catholic member of Divine Mercy Parish and was active in the Altar and Rosary society and the Legion of Mary. Betty was a former member of the Eagles Club. As a young girl, she rode horses and spent summers on her grandparents farm. She had a competitive spirit when it came to playing board games with her children and grandchildren and guessing puzzles on Wheel of Fortune. She kept her mind sharp by playing word searches and crossword puzzles. Betty enjoyed watching sports, especially the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Boston Celtics and of course Super Bowls because of the parties. She loved music and concerts and going to the movie theater and enjoying her popcorn. She frequently shopped for clothing and had a sense of style.

Most of all Betty dearly loved spending time with her family. The luncheons with relatives, holiday gatherings, Sunday meals, and Saturday night takeout pizza were events she always looked forward to. Food, family, faith and friends were at the core of what she held important. Her resiliency and determination to battle through difficult illnesses with such grace and dignity earned the admiration of physicians and nursing staff who took care of her. She never gave up because she loved people and loved life. Betty was revered and loved by her family, friends, neighbors, and quite frankly anyone who had the privilege of knowing her. She leaves a legacy of&nbsp; generosity, selflessness, and kindness. She will be sorely missed.

Survivors include her daughter, Roxanne (Hub) Ulrich of Wellington, CO; eight sons, Greg (Karen) Beckman of Chicago, IL; Randy (Mary) Beckman of Iowa City; Kirk A. (Gertrude) Beckman; Kevin (Vicki) Beckman both of Burlington; Gary L. Beckman of Fort Madison; Jeff Beckman of Burlington; Brian (Sarah) Beckman of Iowa City; Brad (Angie) Beckman of Greenville, SC; 20 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; and 7 great great grandchildren. Also surviving are two brothers in law, Clifford Beckman&nbsp; and Donald (Mary Lee) Beckman along with many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Besides her husband of 66 years, she was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Katherine Linquist.

Beckman, 96, of Burlington, died Monday, April 8, 2024, at the OakView Nursing Home and Rehabilitation in Burlington.Born July 26, 1927, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Raymond and Sarah Wilkerson Linquist. On Aug. 21, 1948, she married Robert P. Beckman at St. Patrick's Church in Burlington. He preceded her in death on Aug. 11, 2015.She graduated from Burlington High School and worked at the telephone company as a switchboard operator until she married. She was a homemaker who raised 8 sons and 1 daughter with Robert at the same house on Agency where she remained for 67 years until her passing.&nbsp;She was a devout Catholic member of Divine Mercy Parish and was active in the Altar and Rosary society and the Legion of Mary. Betty was a former member of the Eagles Club. As a young girl, she rode horses and spent summers on her grandparents farm. She had a competitive spirit when it came to playing board games with her children and grandchildren and guessing puzzles on Wheel of Fortune. She kept her mind sharp by playing word searches and crossword puzzles. Betty enjoyed watching sports, especially the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Boston Celtics and of course Super Bowls because of the parties. She loved music and concerts and going to the movie theater and enjoying her popcorn. She frequently shopped for clothing and had a sense of style.Most of all Betty dearly loved spending time with her family. The luncheons with relatives, holiday gatherings, Sunday meals, and Saturday night takeout pizza were events she always looked forward to. Food, family, faith and friends were at the core of what she held important. Her resiliency and determination to battle through difficult illnesses with such grace and dignity earned the admiration of physicians and nursing staff who took care of her. She never gave up because she loved people and loved life. Betty was revered and loved by her family, friends, neighbors, and quite frankly anyone who had the privilege of knowing her. She leaves a legacy of&nbsp; generosity, selflessness, and kindness. She will be sorely missed.Survivors include her daughter, Roxanne (Hub) Ulrich of Wellington, CO; eight sons, Greg (Karen) Beckman of Chicago, IL; Randy (Mary) Beckman of Iowa City; Kirk A. Robert "Bob" Saar, 74, of Burlington, died Saturday, March 30, 2024 at his home.

Born May 27, 1949, he was the son of Jesse Lee and Gertrude G. Conrad Saar Jr.

Bob graduated from Burlington High School in 1967 and Attended Iowa State University.

Survivors include one brother, Jesse Lee Saar III of Burlington; three sisters Janet Saar Bouve of Brookville, Mo., Elizabeth Anne Saar of Madison, Wisconsin and Mary Kathryn Saar of North Liberty.

Per his wishes, cremation has been accorded and entrusted to the care of Lunning Chapel. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

A memorial has been established in memory of Bob Saar, and may be sent to The Capitol Theater 211 N. 3rd St, Burlington, IA 52601.

James Acres Pilger, affectionately known as Diamond Jim, passed away Tuesday, April 2, 2024 at his home in Burlington. &nbsp; Jim was born May 1, 1951 in Burlington, the son of Robert A. and Janet Payne Pilger. Jim grew up in Burlington and graduated from Burlington High School in 1969. &nbsp;He went on to work as an Inspector at J.I. Case Manufacturing for over 30 years before retiring. &nbsp;He was very proud of being a UAW member.

Jim was dedicated to being unique. He loved Burlington, its history, and enjoyed amassing a collection of unique Burlington ephemera. &nbsp;He had a vast collection of postcards, some unique to the local area and enjoyed being an antique collector and dealer. He had a great appreciation for the Burlington Historical Society.

Jim also enjoyed being outdoors, feeding the birds and gardening. He liked watching the Dodgers and was an Iowa Hawkeye fan. He was also a financial supporter of the Iowa Hawkeyes. Jim’s unique, friendly and caring personality will be missed, but his memory will live on through his family and friends.

Jim’s family include his siblings, William (Linda) Pilger of West Burlington, Jean Miller of Solon, Joyce Pilger of Burlington, John (Joan) Pilger of Burlington, Thomas Pilger of Salt Lake City and Janet Brissey of Burlington; sister-in-law, Nancy Pilger of Burlington, and seventeen beloved nieces and nephews.

Sadly, Jim is preceded in death by his brother, Robert P. Pilger; and parents, Robert A. and Janet.

A simple cremation has been arranged and burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery in accordance to Jim’s wishes.&nbsp;A visitation will be Saturday, June 29, from 1 to 3 p.m. at the UAW Hall, 9313 Koestner Dr.

A memorial has been established for the Des Moines County Historical Society.

James Acres Pilger

John William Kemper, 66, of Donnellson, died at 4:14 p.m. Tuesday, April 2, 2024, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in Fort Madison, Iowa.

He was born on Oct. 10, 1957, in Keokuk, the son of Delbert Lee, Jr. and Dorothy Maxine Stowe Kemper. On April 20, 1991, he married Mindy Jane Wilcox in Donnellson.&nbsp;

He is survived by his wife: Mindy; daughter: Holly (Rob) Conlee of Ankeny, their children: Nicholas and Caitlyn Conlee; son: Shawn (Erica) Kemper of West Point, Iowa, their children: Kyle, Kaiden and Arabel Kemper; son: Shane Kemper of West Point, his children: Hailey, Ronin and Abrahm Kemper; daughter: Katelynn (David) Snook of Donnellson, Iowa, their children: Abby Snook, Alayna Figert, Reagan Figert and Ethan Snook; siblings: Kevin (Val) Kemper of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, Leea (Joe) Brown of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, Angie (John) Haley of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa and Cheryl (Kevin) Elmore of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two children: Jessica Lee and Lucas Richard.

John was a 1977 graduate of Central Lee High School, where he played basketball. He served in the United States Navy. He worked as a correctional officer for the Iowa State Penitentiary for thirty years retiring in 2012. In 1987, John was awarded “Outstanding Correctional Officer of the year.” He was the longest sitting President of AFSCME Local #2989, where he negotiated several state contracts for the Union. He was named Honorary Colonel of the Iowa State Militia by Governor Vilsak in 2003. John enjoyed attending the Midwest Old Threshers Reunion, attending gun shows (as he was a gun enthusiast), hunting, fishing, watching basketball, riding his bike, wood working, eating sweets and drawing stick figures on notes to his family. He was an avid selfie taker, of which he would then send to family and friends. Most of all, John loved spending time with all of his family, especially his children and grandchildren whom he was very proud of.

A visitation will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday,&nbsp;April 6, 2024, at Donnellson United Methodist Church in Donnellson. A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Saturday,&nbsp;April 6, 2024, at the church with Pastor Padma Templeton officiating.

A celebration of life will be held at 1:00 p.m. Sunday,&nbsp;April 14, 2024, at the Lee County Fairgrounds Learning Center in Donnellson.

John Kemper

Frederick M. “Fred” Jaeger, 73, passed away Tuesday, April 2, 2024, at his home.

Fred was one of seven children born to Raymond “Jake” and Helen Jaeger.

He grew up in Burlington, Iowa and retired from the BNSF Railroad after working there for 40 years.

He loved bird watching, and was an animal lover, owning and adopting many dogs and cats throughout the years. He was an avid gardener and produced the most beautiful vegetable gardens and loved sharing the harvest with family and friends. He loved reading and listening to great music like Bob Dylan and The Band.

Fred was a very kind, soft-spoken, easy-going guy with a great sense of humor. Most importantly he loved his family.

He had no children of his own, but there were two girls who were like daughters to him and lovingly called him “Frad”, and a grandson who loved calling him “Paw Paw”.

He is survived by his life partner, soul mate and best friend, Susan Sturgill; sisters, Edie Jaeger, Donna (Rich) Hull and Diana (David) Jackson; brother Rich Jaeger; several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews; his daughter Erica Sturgill-Valdivia and son-in-law Juan Valdivia and grandson Roman Sturgill-Valdivia.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Donald “Skip” Jaeger, Charles “Tuna” Jaeger, sister-in-law Lou Jaeger, nephews David Jaeger and Brian Hull and daughter Allison Sturgill.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Lunning Chapel.

A celebration of life is planned and will be held at a later date.

Dan E. Sylvester, 71, died Wednesday, April 3, 2024, in the presence of his daughter, Shawna Dodge at Kewanee Care Center, Kewanee, Ill.

Born in Burlington, Iowa, on Feb. 13, 1953, he was the son of Ross E. and Dorothy Downey Sylvester. He married Kathy Henry (Meck) on Aug. 20, 1977. They later divorced in May of 1994. He later married a second time to Janie Blint but divorced after two years.

Dan graduated in 1971 from Danville High School with honors. He started work at General Electric a few years after graduation, working in Fab, Tool &amp; Die for over 35 plus years, at which he retired.

He never knew a stranger with his smile and sense of humor. Dan loved playing pool, the outdoors, hunting mushrooms, deer, pheasant, especially fishing, being his favorite. He spent much time with his daughter, Shawna Dodge and grandson, Hunter Coakley fishing together. Dan was also a great cook and enjoyed sharing with his family and friends along with having many laughs and conversations. He was especially proud of his two beautiful grandkids, Hunter and Alivia Coakley.

He is survived by his daughter Shawna Dodge (Sylvester) of Denmark, Iowa and two grandchildren, Hunter Coakley and Alivia Coakley both of Rock Island, Ill.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers David Sylvester and Robert Sylvester, one sister Diane K. McDowell, two half -sisters, Dorothy Downey and Mary Dean and one half-brother Kenny Sylvester.

Dan E. Slyvester

Parlee Taylor, 74, of Burlington, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, March 27, 2024, at the Klein Center in West Burlington.

Born July 27, 1949, in Arkansas, she was the daughter of Morris Sr. and Lessie Irine Garrett Lewis. She was one of 21 children. On July 19, 1975, she married Samuel N. " Little Buddy" Taylor in Burlington. He died Aug. 24, 1997.

She attended Carver High School in Luxora, Ark. &nbsp;

Parlee worked in the food industry over the years including; &nbsp;a cook at the Truck Stop and ran a cafe in Luxora, Ark.&nbsp; with Little Buddy, The Potato House, B.S. Chumley's, Hardee's, a cook for area nursing homes, Columbus Junction's pork processing plant. She loved children and was a caregiver for several families.&nbsp;

Parlee was a devout member of Hope Temple Christian Church and was a trustee. She loved fishing, playing bingo, cooking and enjoyed singing, especially in the family singing group, The Lewis Southernaires. Most of all Parlee loved spending time with her family and being a mother.&nbsp;

Survivors include her sons, Robert Taylor and Jerome Taylor; a host of grandchildren and great grandchildren; 12 siblings, Magnolia Davis of Burlington, Maggie Lou Lewis of Dubuque, Thomas (ErmaLinda) Lewis of Sterling, Ill., Willie Lewis of Marion, L.C. (Sherry) Lewis of Burlington, Jerome (Mary Cay) Lewis of Colorado Springs, Colo., JoAnn Lewis of Burlington, Louise (Ronnie) Stinson of Cedar Rapids, Earl (Cleo) Lewis of Ft Madison, Rosie Cratton of Burlington, Lutrice Williams, and Raymond (Lauretta) Lewis of Burlington; a host of nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, grandparents, seven brothers, Joe, O.W., L.V., Morris Jr, John, Fred, James Sr. and one sister, Eva Mae Spencer .

Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m., Wednesday, April 10, 2024, at Bethany Lutheran Church.

The funeral service for Mrs. Taylor will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 10, 2024, at Bethany Lutheran Church with Pastor Ronnie Braggs officiating. &nbsp;Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. &nbsp;A time of food and fellowship will be held at Bethany Lutheran Church following the burial.

 </figure>Parlee Taylor, 74, of Burlington, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, March 27, 2024, at the Klein Center in West Burlington.Born July 27, 1949, in Arkansas, she was the daughter of Morris Sr. and Lessie Irine Garrett Lewis. She was one of 21 children. On July 19, 1975, she married Samuel N. " Little Buddy" Taylor in Burlington. He died Aug. 24, 1997.She attended Carver High School in Luxora, Ark. &nbsp;Parlee worked in the food industry over the years including; &nbsp;a cook at the Truck Stop and ran a cafe in Luxora, Ark.&nbsp; with Little Buddy, The Potato House, B.S. Chumley's, Hardee's, a cook for area nursing homes, Columbus Junction's pork processing plant. She loved children and was a caregiver for several families.&nbsp;Parlee was a devout member of Hope Temple Christian Church and was a trustee. She loved fishing, playing bingo, cooking and enjoyed singing, especially in the family singing group, The Lewis Southernaires. Most of all Parlee loved spending time with her family and being a mother.&nbsp;Survivors include her sons, Robert Taylor and Jerome Taylor; a host of grandchildren and great grandchildren; 12 siblings, Magnolia Davis of Burlington, Maggie Lou Lewis of Dubuque, Thomas (ErmaLinda) Lewis of Sterling, Ill., Willie Lewis of Marion, L.C. (Sherry) Lewis of Burlington, Jerome (Mary Cay) Lewis of Colorado Springs, Colo., JoAnn Lewis of Burlington, Louise (Ronnie) Stinson of Cedar Rapids, Earl (Cleo) Lewis of Ft Madison, Rosie Cratton of Burlington, Lutrice Williams, and Raymond (Lauretta) Lewis of Burlington; a host of nieces and nephews.Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, grandparents, seven brothers, Joe, O.W., L.V., Morris Jr, John, Fred, James Sr. and one sister, Eva Mae Spencer .Prugh Funeral Service is in care of the arrangements.Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m., Wednesday, April 10, 2024, at Bethany Lutheran Church.The funeral service for Mrs. Taylor will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 10, 2024, at Bethany Lutheran Church with Pastor Ronnie Braggs officiating. &nbsp;Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. &nbsp;A time of food and fellowship will be held at Bethany Lutheran Church following the burial.

Parlee Taylor

Lyle E. Reed, 85, of West Burlington, died Wednesday, April 3, 2024, at Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in West Burlington. Born August 19, 1938, in Aledo, Illinois he was the son of Rolly and Delphine Reed.

He served in the Marines for 20 years. He married Judith “Judy” Kolthoff on March 13, 2001.

Lyle was a truck driver for Long Trucking. He loved woodworking and building things, fishing and dancing.

He is survived by his wife Judy Reed; one daughter Jody and one sister Janet.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two sons.

According to his wishes, cremation has been accorded and entrusted to the care of Lunning Chapel. Burial will be held at a later date in Waterloo.

Larry P. Reid, age 78, died April 2, 2024, surrounded by his family in Burlington.

Larry was born Dec. 6, 1945, the son of Frisby and Gladys Foley Reid. He married his lifelong love, Mary Joan Bertlshofer, on July 17, 1965. Larry was a man who loved his family and cultivated a variety of interests.&nbsp; In Central Lee High School he was an accomplished athlete across a variety of sports.&nbsp; Larry graduated in 1964.&nbsp;

He enjoyed gardening and would grow tomatoes and pumpkins – the size of which might have needed a tractor to move.&nbsp; He liked being close to the river, whether just fishing or watching it go by with a glass of Black Velvet in his hand and Waylon or Willie playing in the background.&nbsp; Larry enjoyed a good NASCAR race and had a touch and go relationship with the St. Louis Cardinals.

Moreover, he loved his grandkids.&nbsp; He liked taking them out on golfcart rides.&nbsp; During Easter he was a master egg hider…which ended up being an all-year affair with eggs turning up late into the October season.

Larry will be deeply missed, but his memory will continue on through all who love him.

Larry’s family include his children, Patrick (Pam) Reid and Derek (Jennifer) Reid; grandchildren, Kaiti (Jack) Helstrom, Liam Reid, Marcus Reid and Melanie Reid; siblings, Bob (Terri) Reid and Jane (David) Schevers; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Sadly, Larry is preceded in death by his cherished wife, Mary; siblings, John Reid, Verna Simmons, Mary Ann Riter and Judy Dietsch.

Memorial contributions in Larry’s memory are suggested to the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House.

A simple cremation has been arranged for Larry in accordance with his wishes.&nbsp; No services are scheduled at this time.

Jerry D. Wiley, 75, of Burlington, Iowa, died April 1, 2024, at his home.

Born on Dec. 17, 1948, in Burlington, he was the son of Alvin O. and Dorothy Barkus Wiley Jr. On Feb. 14, 2003, in Burlington, he married Roberta J. Foster.

Jerry was a 1967 Burlington High School graduate. For 37 years he worked for the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant in the Powerhouse as a boiler maker and worked for 15 years for Ralph Wilson Trucking. In the summer time Jerry would also do commercial fishing. He was a lifetime member of the Burlington VFW Post #10102, Vietnam Veterans of American and Disabled American Veterans and the Operator Local #150 Union. Every year he looked forward to attending the Howard County Veterans Reunion in Kokomo, Ind. When he and Bert would travel, they always enjoyed stopping at the casinos and playing a few games. In Jerry’s free time, he enjoyed mushroom hunting, hunting, playing cards, going to gun auctions, and trap shooting. Most of all Jerry loved having hog roasts with his friends and family.

He is survived by his wife Roberta; daughter Tracey Wiley and Son Troy Wiley; three grandchildren: Josh Knotts, Bailey Wiley and Bo Wiley and sister Diane Rounds of Burlington. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers: Jim and Terry Wiley.

Military Rites will be held for Jerry at 1:30 p.m. Friday, April 5, 2024 at Lunning Chapel by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard. The family will receive friends from 12 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. prior to the service. Burial will be held in Burlington Memorial Park.

Following the burial the family invites all to join them at the Burlington VFW Post #10102.

Ronnie C. Worley, 70, of Lomax, Ill., died March 29, 2024.

Ronnie was born Jan. 1, 1954, in Mayfield, Ky., the son of Lawrence and Vona B. Sipes Worley. On Dec. 17, 1978, he married Deb Pence in Lomax.

Mr. Worley was a graduate of Dallas City High School. He began his working career with the Ironworkers Local #557 and retired from Case in Burlington, where he was a member of the UAW #807. He was a member of the former Lomax Saddle Club. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, riding horses and Harley-Davidson Motorcycles, playing guitar and especially spending time with his family. He was a lover of classic muscle cars and trucks.&nbsp;

Survivors include his wife, Deb; three children: Ranee (Bryan) Beach of Colusa, Shane (Adrianne) Worley of Dallas City and Molly (Jessi Harris) Worley of Chicago, Ill.; five grandchildren: Kelsey (Ben) Glancy, Chloe (Tanner Purdum) Walker, Allison Worley and Evan Worley; two great-grandchildren: Charli and Palmer and one sister: Carolyn (Bob) Todd of Cuba, Mo.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister: Beverly Siegfried.&nbsp;

A visitation with the family will be from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 2, 2024, at Banks &amp; Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City.&nbsp;

Michael Nick Verootis, 80, of Burlington, died Friday, March 29, 2024, at his home.

Born August 16, 1943, in Omaha, Neb., he was the son of Nick and Georgia Verootis.

After graduating high school, he earned his Welding Tech degree from the Milwaukee School of Engineering and was an Army veteran.

Mike was a welder and consultant for Flint Cliffs Manufacturing for several years until his retirement in 2001.

He loved going to auctions, casinos, collecting elephants and fixing small appliances.

Mike is survived by the love of his life, Jill, children; Cassandra Drew, Michael John Verootis, Jonathan Hill and Allee Hill; granddaughter Paige Drew; sister Sophia Frees; Jill’s mother, Jacque Hill; sisters, Sherry Locke and Julia Miller and grandchildren Gunner Hill, Calvin Lair, Matthew Hill and William Hill.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother Nick Bagles.

The graveside funeral service and entombment for Mr. Verootis will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 2 at Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery. Willard Jackson, 74, died March 31, 2024, after a five-year battle with cancer.&nbsp; &nbsp;He was a fighter all the way.&nbsp; Willard was of the Christian faith, and he’d made peace with the Lord.&nbsp; While not ready to leave us, he knew that he would be welcomed into heaven when he did.&nbsp; Willard was born on Sept. 24, 1949, in Dennison, Ohio, and moved to Iowa shortly thereafter, spending his entire adult life in West Burlington.&nbsp; He married Sandra Kennedy Jackson, and they later divorced.&nbsp; Willard was an apprentice carpenter after graduating from Burlington High School, learning the trade and how to do things the old school way – or as he would tell you – the “right way”.&nbsp; For the rest of his life he perfected and honed his craft working on many of the historic homes in Burlington and building most of the stores in Westland Mall.&nbsp; Few are as talented and attentive to detail when it came to craftsmanship as dad. &nbsp;

It would be fair to say that Dad was opinionated and had strong feelings about things.&nbsp; And he had no problems telling you what he was thinking. He probably hurt some peoples’ feelings over the years, but it was always Dad’s prerogative to stick to his principles and do (or say) what he thought was right.&nbsp; People also appreciated his frankness and dry wit which led to many enduring friendships.&nbsp; Dad had a number of hobbies over the years – most of which were short-lived, but a few of which stuck with him:&nbsp; playing cribbage, fishing, building, and flying model airplanes, playing golf and racquetball, nurturing his plants (or the plants of anyone else that he deemed in need of care), baking pies and other sweet treats from scratch, woodworking, growing black raspberries and wildflowers, remodeling his house (several times!), smoking briskets and ribs and spending time with his grandkids or at their games.&nbsp; He really also loved “messing” with telemarketers when they called him!&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;

Those left to remember Willard include his children, Erica (Wayne) Thomson of Burlington and Kyle of Raleigh, N.C.; grandchildren Rocky, Bianca, and Vanessa Thomson; siblings Tim (Judy) Jackson of Danville, Darla Stein of Storm Lake, Marla (Roger) Woodsmall of Morning Sun, Mark (Stacy) Jackson of San Marcos, C.A., and numerous extended family and many friends.&nbsp; Willard was preceded in death by a son, Troy Jackson; his parents, James and Della Jackson; brother Marvin Jackson, brother-in-law Jim Stein and many aunts and uncles.

Richard “Rick” Allen Koeller, 64, died peacefully in his sleep, surrounded by his family on Sunday, March 24, 2024. Two celebrations of life gatherings will be held. Rick was born on Jan. 8, 1960 in Platteville Wis.. He was the son of Patrenella (Penny) and Christian Koeller. He lost his mother Penny to a car accident when he was a young boy and was adopted by Elizabeth (Betty) Koeller when she and his father got married. He was united in marriage to his beloved wife, Vicki (Zaiser) Koeller in Pine Grove, Colo. on Sept. 4, 2016. Rick grew up chasing adventures on the backroads of Southern Wisconsin and loved to tell stories about all of the trouble he talked himself out of. He graduated from Cuba City High School, WI in 1979 and went on to work at several jobs including Woodward Printing Services in Platteville Wis. for 20 years. He owned and operated The Hideout Bar in Benton, WI for 6 years where he became everyone’s best friend and made so many of his favorite memories. He then moved on to work at Rite Hite in Dubuque for 5 years and finally ABB in Burlington for 5 years before he retired due to health reasons.

He was a quirky guy full of good times and laughter. He made friends with everyone he met. There is nothing he loved more than golfing, the Green Bay Packers, traveling and raw meat. But the true love of his life was his wife, Vicki. They spent 9 years traveling, camping, golfing and living life together. His love for her radiated off him.

Rick was also a pyro and loved to make things go BOOM! He was the guy to get cherry bombs from and he enjoyed helping his brother, Russ, in his fireworks business. Rick’s claim to fame was his homemade meatloaf and Bloody Marys, but he was also a pool shark and loved bowling and hunting. He lived for his hunting trips with his best friend Barth and other friends in Northern Wisconsin. He could tell stories for days of all the mischief they got into.

He was a loveable instigator and if you got too close, you might end up with a finger in your ear and a playful grin. He loved ice cream, beer, going out to eat and spending time with his family. He was a man of few words, but was a great listener and loyal friend. He left behind so many people who loved him and he will be greatly missed.

Rick is survived by his wife Vicki of Burlington; his mother Betty Koeller of Platteville; his children Reanna (Bob) Parker of Darlington, WI, Sarah (Ed Nolan) Koeller of Jackson, TN, Shannan (Mitch Paulsen) Koeller of Dubuque, IA, Dan (Amy Cary) Koeller of Prairie Du Chein, WI, Josh (Lacy) Cummings of Watertown, WI, his step-daughter Rachel Cassabon of Fort Collins, CO; siblings Russ (Jody) Koeller of Dickeyville, WI, Robert (Dana) Koeller of East Dubuque, IA, Renee (Aaron) Niekula of Yorkville, IL, Ryan (Tricia) Koeller of McGregor, IA; grandchildren Ross Stauffacher, Bobby Jr, Steele &amp; Braxton Parker, Allison and Evan DeBuhr and Peyton Koeller; many nieces and nephews and life long friends Barth and Deb.

He is preceded in death by his mother Penny Koeller, his father Chris Koeller, his sisters Roxanne and Rochelle Koeller, a brother-in-law Pat Moody, and a niece Monica Moody. His maternal grandparents Robert and Maxine Pratt, and his paternal grandparents Frederick and Catherine Koeller.

Per his wishes, cremation was accorded and entrusted to the care of Lunning Funeral Chapel. Rick was able to help countless families with his gift of organ donation.

James L. Farris, 58, of Burlington, died Friday, March 22, 2024, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born Oct. 9, 1965, in Burlington, he was the son of Billie Gene Farris and Karen Boughton.&nbsp;

He graduated from Burlington High School and continued his education at Southeastern Community College. &nbsp;

Out of high school, James worked for God Father's Pizza. Since he enjoyed being around people, he started working as a bartender at many establishments over the years. He also worked for a catering company in Colorado.&nbsp;

He enjoyed the outdoors and would go hunting and fishing with his dad. James also liked to oil paint and wrote books. James was a passionate advocate and volunteer for the AIDS Project.&nbsp;

Survivors include his mother, Karen Boulton of Burlington; step-father, Donald Boulton Jr. of Lomax, Ill.; sister, Laura (Brain) Holt of New London; half sister, Juanita "Tina" (Steve) Birda of Oxford; and grandmother, Mary Waddell of West Burlington.

He was preceded in death by his father, brother, Timothy Farris and many extended family member.&nbsp;
