John E. "Jack" Schmidt, 95, of Burlington, died Tuesday, Nov.28, 2023, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in West Burlington. Born Feb. 26, 1928, in Ottumwa, he was the son of Clarence and Grace Wren Schmidt. On Sept. 26, 1950, he married Patricia Jeanne Hervey in Ottumwa. She preceded him in death on Jan. 2, 2012. He attended St. Ambrose University. He worked as a purchasing agent for the Kenmar Manufacturing Company in Ottumwa for seven years, then as an upholstery buyer for Chittenden &amp; Eastman in Burlington. He was a salesman at MPI in Fort Worth, Texas for 25 years and most recently, a salesman at Furniture City in West Burlington.&nbsp; He was a U.S. Marines Veteran, serving from 1946 until 1948. While enlisted, he played basketball on the official Marine team. He was of Catholic faith and was a member of Divine Mercy Parish. He had a strong faith and said the rosary daily. Jack was devoted to his family and enjoyed attending family gatherings and spending time at their cabin on the backwaters of the river. He also liked to socialize with his friends at Joe's Inn. He was a great storyteller and had a wonderful sense of humor. He enjoyed watching the Lawrence Welk show. He was a dedicated supporter of Burlington Notre Dame School and was an avid Iowa Hawkeyes fan. He followed High School sports across the state and would often comment on which schools had strong teams each year.&nbsp; He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 10102, American Legion Post 52, Hamilton-Walters Marine Corps League, a 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus, and a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles.&nbsp; Survivors include his son, Greg (Maureen) Schmidt of Leawood, Kan.; six daughters, Christine (Jim) Corkery of Bridgeton, Mo., Janet Schmidt of Muscatine, Julie (Pat) Kelley, Carol (Larry) Lindhart, Lisa (Mike) Smith all of Burlington, Anne (Chris) Lansing of Davenport; 18 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews; two sisters, Sue Tharp of Sheboygan, Wis., Helen Clemens of Ottumwa; and his cat, Pepper. John E. "Jack" Schmidt

Lonnie Eugene Lewis of Dallas City, Ill. died Saturday, Nov. 25, 2023, at his home. He was born Feb. 14, 1949, in Monmouth, Ill., the son of Everette Eugene and Jane Cordelia Lewis. He only has one surviving child, Bobbie, but he had lots of grandchildren whom he loved dearly.

He was known to be an extremely hard worker who never left something half-done. He was an adamant animal lover who was particularly fond of pugs and went on to start The Good Shepard.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters, Glenda and Rose, his brother Ron, his niece, Tiffany, and his daughter Crystal.

He is survived by his son Robert Lee Lewis of Oakville, his grandchildren, Jeremy, Dakota, Leigha, and Ricky, four great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Cremation has been entrusted to Banks &amp; Beals Funeral Home. A service will be held at the Oakville Community Center, 104 East Ash Street, Oakville, on Dec. 2, 2023, at 10 a.m.

The family requests that flowers be sent to the Oakville Community Center and that donations be made to PAWS animal shelter in Fort Madison.&nbsp;

Thomas Swan, 58, of Newton, died Thursday, Nov. 23, 2023, at the Newton Health Care Center.

Born June 26, 1965, in Albia, he was the son of Oscar O. Swan and Naoma Kirby Bristol. On Sept. 28, 1985, he married Martha Fleagle and together they had two children. He later married Tracy Fanning in 2000 and they later divorced. &nbsp;

He was a devoted Minnesota Vikings and Iowa Hawkeye fan. He enjoyed playing darts, pool, singing karaoke, especially Elvis and KISS. He was also a fan of Junior Talley, an Elvis impersonator.

Survivors include his daughter, Nichole Gonzalez of Burlington; son, Aaron Swan of Farmington; grandchild, Grace; six siblings, Carol (Clifford) Kingery of Newton, Robert (Mary) Swan of San Antonio, Texas, Geoffrey Swan of Helena, Mont., Teresa (Larry) Buck of Burlington, Bradly Swan of Newton and William Bristol of Brownsville, Texas; two sisters-in-law, Patricia Swan of Newton, and Gwen Swan of Rogers, Ark.; brother-in-law, Richards Closser of Floris and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, Junior, Kenneth, David and Steven Swan; sister, Connie Closser and newphew, George "Joe" Marshall.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh Crematory. There will be no public visitation. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery at a later date.

Thomas Swan

Jean M. McKinney, 93, of West Burlington, died Saturday, Nov. 25, 2023, at Oakview Care and Rehabilitation Center in Burlington.

Born Feb. 7, 1930, in St. Louis, Mo., she was the daughter of Joseph and Frances Schroeder Engelmeyer.

After graduating high school, she graduated from Quincy College in 1962, in Quincy, Ill. and earned her master’s degree in music education through the University of Illinois.

She taught music education for elementary students in Hileah, Florida, Griggsville, Ill. and Fort Madison and was an orchestra instructor for 20 years for the Burlington school district.

She was a devout Catholic and member of Divine Mercy Parish and was honored to meet Pope John Paul II in St. Louis in 1999 and Bishop Sheen in Nauvoo, Ill. She also attended services at Faith Temple for many years and other area churches in the Burlington area.

Jean was an avid fossil collector, loved fishing and playing the violin at church masses and visiting and playing for area nursing homes. While living in Mediapolis, she went to the Mediapolis Care Facility every Sunday to share the word of God and her love for music.

She sent monthly checks to India for over 40 years to help support those whom are less fortunate.

Jean resided at Oakview Care and Rehabilitation Center for the last two years of her life and was blessed with the tremendous support of her extended family.

She is survived by her daughter Ruth (Roger) Tapke, of Ellington, Connecticut; son-in-law, Patrick Mullahy of Burlington; four grandchildren, Lisa (Joel) Langley, Teresa (John) VanUtrecht, Sara Varga and Matthew (Sara) Mullahy; ten great grandchildren and many wonderful nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, daughter Kay Mullahy, one sister Arlene Futrell and four brothers Joseph Engelmeyer, Paul Engelmeyer, James Engelmeyer and John Engelmeyer.

The Mass of Christian Burial for Jean will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, Dec. 1 at St. John Catholic Church of Divine Mercy Parish. The Rev. Father Dominic Nguyen will be the celebrant. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.

A Christian Wake will be held at 5 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 30 at Lunning Chapel with the family to receive friends following the Christian Wake until 7 p.m.

Larry Dean Clark, 81, of Dallas City, Ill., died at 5:33 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 22, 2023, at his home. Larry was born at home in Pontoosuc, Ill., on Oct. 20, 1942, the son Dale and Grace McNaught Clark.

Larry began working in the construction industry at 18 and quickly became a heavy equipment operator. He was a 60-year member of Local 649 Union, Peoria, Ill. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and mushroom hunting. He was a loving father, grandfather, brother, and friend to many.&nbsp;

Survivors include one daughter: Michelle (Jason) Gold of Dallas City; two grandchildren: Alex Gold and Emily (Dalton) Merry; nine siblings: Dennis McNaught of North Covina, Calif., Rose Davidson of Peoria, Ill., Sandy Penrod of Fort Madison, Curtis Clark of Sacramento, Calif., Dale Clark of Donnellson, Nick Clark, LaVeta Smith, LaVera Leebold and Sheryl Clark all of Dallas City, Ill.; a special friend: Sandra Schertz of Lomax, Ill. and several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews.&nbsp;

Linda graduated from Danville High School in 1966. She married Michael Key in 1967 and they later divorced. On May 9, 1986, she married Clyde Klossing Jr. in Burlington. He died Jan. 12, 2006.

Linda worked for Motorola and then Winegard, retiring in 2003. She enjoyed playing Bingo and was a big Iowa Hawkeye fan. She loved her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was of the protestant faith.

Survivors include her daughter Marta (Jerald) Frost of Graham, N.C.; three grandchildren Alona Yarnell of Graham, N.C., JerRon (Nyssa) Frost and Jaylen (Ashlee Duerksen) Frost both of Burlington; four great-grandchildren Sunny Yarnell, Teagen Yarnell, Madison Yarnell-Shaw and Jones Frost; brother Jerry (Nancy) Bell of Vicksburg, Miss.; niece Allison (Greg) Bennett of Germantown, Tenn.; nephew Matthew (Haley) Bell of Vicksburg, Miss. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband Clyde.

Kathy was born Jan. 11, 1953, in Muscatine, the daughter of Robert and Gloria Vanzyle Buster. She married Scott Alter on July 7, 1973. Kathy lived in Mount Pleasant most of her life, except for five years in Muscatine where she enjoyed spending time with friends at Hershey Manor. 

Kathy was an avid Mount Pleasant Panther Athletic supporter, enjoyed listening to Iowa basketball and football on the radio, car rides, dinner out to eat and to the casino with family, going to Oakland Mills to watch the eagles, she loved cats, and she especially enjoyed time with her grandkids.&nbsp;

She is survived by two sons, Chase (Rita Hartman) Alter of Burlington and Rusty (Sashae) Alter of Mount Pleasant; three grandchildren, Jahmal, Jaiya, Maverick; her siblings Rick Buster and Pam Buster; cousins, and numerous nieces and nephews. Kathy was preceded in death by her parents and Scott Alter.&nbsp;

The family would like to thank the staff of Savannah Heights and EveryStep Hospice for the care they provided Kathy. Visitation will be held Friday, Dec. 1, 2023, from 2 to 6 p.m. with family present from 4 to 6 p.m. at Olson Powell Chapel and Crematory. A memorial has been established for funeral expenses. Barbara Rose Simmons Wills, 63, of West Burlington, died Wednesday, Nov. 22, 2023, at the University of Iowa Hospitals &amp; Clinics in Iowa City.

Bob Murphy, 86, of Burlington, died Sunday, Nov. 19, 2023, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in West Burlington.

Born April 5, 1937, in Burlington, he was the son of Kenneth H. and Jeanette Kiersey Murphy. On Nov. 21, 1964, he married Judith Rhodes.

Bob proudly served his country as a member of the United States Air Force from 1956 to 1962.

Bob was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Burlington. He enjoyed roller skating, where he met the love of his life. Bob always made a point to attend as many of his children’s and grandchildren’s musical and sporting events as possible. It was well known that his children and his grandchildren were everything to him. In addition to spending time with friends and family, you could find Bob farming or admiring a few Allis Chalmers tractors.

Survivors include his wife, Judith; children, Derrick Murphy of Burlington, Craig (Esther) Murphy of Burlington, and Robin (Daniel) Adami of Ariz.; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; siblings, Dennis Murphy of Burlington and Jennifer Murphy of Burlington; and several nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Mike and Albert. Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh Crematory.

Visitation with the family to receive friends will be 2 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 30, 2023, at Grace United Methodist Church.

The Memorial Service for Mr. Murphy will be 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 30, 2023 at Grace United Methodist Church, Burlington with Pastor Tamara Wirt officiating. Burial will take place at a later date.

Larry Edgar Alter, 89, of Burlington, died Friday, Nov. 17, 2023, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, Iowa. Born Dec. 8, 1933, in Burlington, he was the son of Clarence and Nellie Deeds Alter.

He was a 1952 graduate of Burlington High School and attended Burlington JuniorCollege and the University of Iowa. He served in the Navy during the Korean Conflict. After returning home, he moved to Chicago, Ill., and began working for Webcor Electronics. There, he learned about the Distant Early Warning (DEW) Line, which provided communications to the United States about potential Russian attacks on our country. While working on the DEW Line, he met a man who told him about California’s offer of a free college education, so he relocated to California to attend college. He returned to Burlington on summer break, where he met Marcia Willem. They were married on Sept. 23, 1962, in Downy, Calif. During a weekend visit with his cousin, Harold “Hank” Alter, Larry was offered a job in the electrical construction industry with C. F. Braun. That was his start in electrical construction, a field he worked in for many years. His first career positions were as a project engineer for two electrical construction projects at the Arco Refinery in Torrance, Calif., and a chemical plant in Moundsville, W.V. His project management career was exclusively in California, where he led construction projects, including the Mobil Oil Refinery coker and control house in Torrance, the Humble Refinery control house in Benicia, Westwood Plaza Tower in Los Angeles, Lawrence Welk Plaza Towers in Santa Monica, a water reclamation plant in Huntington Beach, the Crystal Cathedral in Garden Grove, the Anaheim Stadium Addition in Anaheim for the Rams and the Angels, Toyota’s National Headquarters in Torrance, Westminster Mall in Westminster, numerous NBC Studios projects in Burbank, many projects at Disneyland, including the Jungle Cruise, in Anaheim, various hospitals in Orange County, the Austin Company Offices in Irvine, the Pacific Bell Offices in San Ramon, Universal Studios 36-story high-rise in Universal City, and many others until his retirement in 1989. After retirement, Larry consulted and advised on many projects. 

While managing an ambitious career, he created expansive experiences for his family. After transforming a bus into a motorhome by hand, Larry and his family explored the western United States, finding unimaginable adventures. Closer to home, a cabin in the desert provided too many opportunities to list: fishing, hiking, motorcycle riding, and planting an orchard of walnut trees. Marcia and Larry traveled back to Iowa each summer, living in a motorhome while traveling. In 2005, they purchased their home in Burlington on the internet, sight unseen simply because it was on the bluff overlooking his beloved Mississippi. He attributed his good health and long life to its soul-filling river views. Always ready with his time, talent, and energy to lend help and guidance to family, friends, and strangers, Larry will be missed.

Larry is survived by his wife, Marcia Alter of Burlington; two children, Diane Alter Bernhardt of Park City, Utah and David (Colleen) Alter of Scottsdale, Ariz.; two grandchildren, Matthew David Bernhardt and Daniel Alter Bernhardt; three sisters, Beverly Fisher of Burlington, Linda Kay of Clear Lake, and Cheryl Herbers of Placentia, Calif. He was preceded in death by his parents, twin brother Leon Charles Alter in infancy, brother Jack Alter, and sister Dana Harris.

Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 9, at Lunning Chapel in Burlington, where the family will receive friends beginning at 9:30 a.m. The funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. with Pastor JudyAnn Morse officiating. Larry Edgar Alter

Teri L. Hummer, 66, of Burlington, died Monday, Nov. 20, 2023 at her home.

Born Aug. 19, 1957, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Kenneth and Bonnie Reid Rich Sr.

Teri graduated from Burlington High School with the class of 1975. On Jan. 12, 1985 she married Ronald Hummer in Burlington. Teri was of the Protestant Faith.

She worked for the Des Moines County Auditor’s office for 10 years. Teri volunteered with the Des Moines County Humane Society, she loved horseback riding and reading.

Survivors include her husband Ronald of Burlington; three children Blake (Lori) Umthun of Des Moines, Brooke (Manuel) Bermudez of California, Grant Hummer of Burlington; one step-son Jody (Yolanda) Hummer of Burlington; six grandchildren Taden, Landen, Anthony, Andrew, Natalie and Jefferey; two step-grandchildren Jeana and Damien; siblings Kenneth Rich Jr of Mt. Union, Marcia (Mort) Gaines of Fairfield, Kelly (Mark) Ripperger of Burlington, Tony (Liz) Rich of Burlington and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and step-son Shawn.

Visitation for Teri will be Saturday, Nov. 25 from 1 to 3 p.m. at Lunning Chapel. A memorial service and inurnment will be held at a later date.

Scott Donald Cooper, 62, of Burlington, died Monday, Nov. 20, 2023, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born January 24, 1961 in Frankfort, Ill., he was the son of Delmas Brock and Bonnie Jean Shults. He graduated from high school in Illinois where he loved to play basketball.

Scott met Zandra Cole in June of 2003 and they have enjoyed 20 wonderful years together.

He was a member of Local 91 Sheetmetal Workers and worked for Arnold’s Refrigeration for numerous years. Scott was a fan of the Chicago Bears, White Sox and Chicago Blackhawks. He enjoyed music and going to the casino. Scott liked to putter around the house and he loved his family.

Survivors include his loving wife Zandra Cole of Burlington; two daughters Candice Osslund of Burlington and Samantha Osslund of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; four grandchildren Lexie Latta, Trey Terpenning, Chloe Terpenning and Evan Wise; one great granddaughter Malani Black; his father Delmas Brock of London, Ky.; half-brother Dan Brock of Las Vegas, Nev., and several step-brothers and step-sisters.

He was preceded in death by his mother and stepfather, John Lissak.

The graveside service for Scott will be 2 p.m., Friday, Nov. 24, 2023 &nbsp;in Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be noon to 2 p.m. at Lunning Chapel prior to the service. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

Scott Donald Cooper

Dorothy Eleanor Johnson was born April 14, 1930 in the family farmhouse near Dallas City, Ill.&nbsp; and died in the same farmhouse Nov. 19, 2023. She was one of 8 children born to Paul and Grace Markey. Her siblings Lester, Leon, Frank, John, Tony, and Mary preceded her in death, and her sister Katherine survives.&nbsp; 

She loved learning and excelled in the local public schools she attended.&nbsp; Dorothy went on to study at Western Illinois State College, received her teaching certificate, and taught four years in rural Illinois schoolhouses. Her school teaching career ended when God started sending her children.&nbsp; She met James R. "Jim" Johnson , at a square dance near Dallas City. They were married on Feb. 7, 1953, at Immaculate Conception Church in Carthage, Ill. Jim became a Catholic shortly after their marriage as a surprise ‘gift’ to his new bride.&nbsp; Jim died July 30, 2009, with&nbsp; Dorothy at his bedside.&nbsp; Dorothy attended Sacred Heart Church in Dallas City her entire life with her family. They had ten children; two died at birth; the remaining eight survived and had children of their own. She likes to refer to her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren as her treasures.

Dorothy’s children and grandchildren:James (Liz) Johnson and children James M., Patrick, Paul, Timothy, and Jenny (deceased); Paul (Deb) Johnson and children Beth and Nora;&nbsp; David (Patricia) Johnson and children Heidi, Amy, Colleen, and Holly;&nbsp; Annetta (Dave) Tevis and children Ian and Michael;&nbsp; Robert (Lori) Johnson and children Megan, Hannah, and Ryan; Carol (Jim) Barnett and children Sister Gemma (Ashley), Grace, Katey, Daniel, and Samantha (deceased);&nbsp; Patricia (Jim) Cuffe and children Courtney, Grant, and Emily;&nbsp; Andrew (Becky) Johnson and children Tom, David, and Ellie. Dorothy’s&nbsp; great grandchildren:Abbey and Kate Van Middlesworth, Lena and Jonah Taylor, Rayna Tevis, Cora and Nathaniel Tevis, Owen, Addie, and Harper Brewer, Emma and Henry Mueller, Lauren Chalmers, and Jake Seymoure, Benjamin Bingham, Genevieve Johnson, many nieces, nephews, and step grandchildren.

It would have been more than enough work to be a farm wife and mother of eight, but Dorothy did not limit her love to her family. She taught the Catholic faith to other children, served on the Altar and Rosary Society, was a lector at Sacred Heart and served on the Durham election board.&nbsp; She performed many spiritual and corporal works of mercy including sending many letters of encouragement to those who needed them.&nbsp; She was not shy about entering into thorny issues with words given to her by the Holy Spirit.&nbsp; Many will miss those letters.&nbsp;

Jim, Dorothy, and their sons spent much time caring for the Gittings Mound Cemetery, her final resting place.&nbsp; After her sons left home, Dorothy continued to mow the cemetery by herself until Jim retired in 1990. Today her son David, and nephew Wayne Garrison continue the tradition.&nbsp; 

After Jim’s retirement, Dorothy and Jim were able to garden together, visit their children and grandchildren, make many wooden pieces of furniture from oak grown on the farm, and fish the creek and Mississippi River.&nbsp; They especially enjoyed a few trips to Mobridge, South Dakota to fish for walleye in Lake Oahe with their five sons.&nbsp;

Dorothy’s children gathered at her bedside at the end of her life.&nbsp; She did not ask them to come, but her life called them to be there for over a week to pray, recount favorite family stories, be quiet together, and enjoy communion in the spirit of Christ.&nbsp; Her granddaughter, Sister Gemma, said it was ‘like her children made a week long retreat in grandma’s room’.&nbsp; Dorothy was an amazing woman whose physical presence will be missed. However, those who know her are certain that her prayers will be even more effective now.&nbsp;

A Rosary will be recited at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 26, 2023, at Banks &amp; Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City followed by a visitation with the family until 5 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 27, 2023, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Dallas City with Fr. Tony Trosley as celebrant. Burial will follow at Gittings Mound Cemetery, rural Dallas City.&nbsp;

 </figure>Dorothy Eleanor Johnson was born April 14, 1930 in the family farmhouse near Dallas City, Ill.&nbsp; and died in the same farmhouse Nov. 19, 2023. She was one of 8 children born to Paul and Grace Markey. Her siblings Lester, Leon, Frank, John, Tony, and Mary preceded her in death, and her sister Katherine survives.&nbsp; She loved learning and excelled in the local public schools she attended.&nbsp; Dorothy went on to study at Western Illinois State College, received her teaching certificate, and taught four years in rural Illinois schoolhouses. Her school teaching career ended when God started sending her children.&nbsp; She met James R. "Jim" Johnson , at a square dance near Dallas City. They were married on Feb. 7, 1953, at Immaculate Conception Church in Carthage, Ill. Jim became a Catholic shortly after their marriage as a surprise ‘gift’ to his new bride.&nbsp; Jim died July 30, 2009, with&nbsp; Dorothy at his bedside.&nbsp; Dorothy attended Sacred Heart Church in Dallas City her entire life with her family. They had ten children; two died at birth; the remaining eight survived and had children of their own. She likes to refer to her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren as her treasures. Dorothy’s children and grandchildren:James (Liz) Johnson and children James M., Patrick, Paul, Timothy, and Jenny (deceased); Paul (Deb) Johnson and children Beth and Nora;&nbsp; David (Patricia) Johnson and children Heidi, Amy, Colleen, and Holly;&nbsp; Annetta (Dave) Tevis and children Ian and Michael;&nbsp; Robert (Lori) Johnson and children Megan, Hannah, and Ryan; Carol (Jim) Barnett and children Sister Gemma (Ashley), Grace, Katey, Daniel, and Samantha (deceased);&nbsp; Patricia (Jim) Cuffe and children Courtney, Grant, and Emily;&nbsp; Andrew (Becky) Johnson and children Tom, David, and Ellie. Dorothy’s&nbsp; great grandchildren:Abbey and Kate Van Middlesworth, Lena and Jonah Taylor, Rayna Tevis, Cora and Nathaniel Tevis, Owen, Addie, and Harper Brewer, Emma and Henry Mueller, Lauren Chalmers, and Jake Seymoure, Benjamin Bingham, Genevieve Johnson, many nieces, nephews, and step grandchildren. It would have been more than enough work to be a farm wife and mother of eight, but Dorothy did not limit her love to her family. She taught the Catholic faith to other children, served on the Altar and Rosary Society, was a lector at Sacred Heart and served on the Durham election board.&nbsp; She performed many spiritual and corporal works of mercy including sending many letters of encouragement to those who needed them.&nbsp; She was not shy about entering into thorny issues with words given to her by the Holy Spirit.&nbsp; Many will miss those letters.&nbsp; Jim, Dorothy, and their sons spent much time caring for the Gittings Mound Cemetery, her final resting place.&nbsp; After her sons left home, Dorothy continued to mow the cemetery by herself until Jim retired in 1990. David Loren “Dino” Gabeline, 63, of Danville and Yarmouth, died Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2023, at the University of Iowa Hospital.&nbsp;&nbsp;He was born March 30, 1960 in Burlington to Robert Louis and Donna Lee Dodds Gabeline.&nbsp;&nbsp;He was a 1978 graduate of Mediapolis High School.

On Aug. 30, 1980, he married the love of his life, Diane Kay Cornick at the Burlington United Methodist Church.&nbsp;&nbsp;Dino was a lifelong farmer and grain elevator operator and was owner and operator of Southeast Iowa Grain.&nbsp;&nbsp;He was a past member of the Yarmouth Fire Department; enjoyed boating in the Ozarks; riding his Harley; vacations and traveling; and driving his gator, drinking beer, and looking at the crops. But what he really enjoyed the most was any time spent with Diane and his family; he loved his children and adored his grandchildren.

Besides his wife, he is survived by his son Adam (Samantha) Gabeline and daughter Alexandra (Ryan) Menke, both of Danville; Papa to five grandchildren, Adrianna, Tate, Blake, Noah and Addison; brothers Mike Gabeline of Yarmouth, and Dan (Amy) Gabeline, who was not only his brother, but his partner and best friend; one sister Teri (Jeff) Wilkerson of Yarmouth; nieces and nephews; his dogs Glacier and Ruger; and a host of friends.&nbsp;&nbsp;He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.&nbsp;&nbsp;

According to his wishes his body has been cremated.&nbsp;&nbsp;A Celebration of Life for Dino will be held&nbsp;Nov. 27, 2023, from 3 to 8 p.m. at The Filling Station,&nbsp;20478 Eastern Avenue, Yarmouth. &nbsp;A memorial has been established for the Yarmouth Fire Department.&nbsp;&nbsp;Elliott Chapel, New London, is assisting the family.

Eric M. Larson 58, of Cedar Park, Texas, died Friday, Nov. 10 after several years of health problems.

Born Oct. 21, 1965, in Burlington, the son of Ronald D. Larson and Florence K. Larson Burns.

Eric graduated from Burlington High School in 1984 and then attended Southeastern Community College. Eric owned and operated Caliber Floors and wrote and published a book, 'The Carpet Installation Handbook'.

The Memorial Celebration of Life Service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 18, at Lunning Funeral Chapel in Burlington. He is survived by his mother Florence Larson Burns and his step-dad William Burns of New Braunfels, Texas, his sister, Melissa Larson of Cedar Park, Texas, step brothers and sisters: Wm. Allen Burns (Roxanna), Michael Burns (Anna), and Kathryn Williams, and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his father, Ronald D. Larson, grandparents, and many aunts and uncles.

Dwayne C. Mathews, 91, of Danville, died Saturday, Nov. 11, 2023, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in West Burlington.

Born Oct. 3, 1932, in Burlington, he was the son of Port and Grace Stucker Mathews. He graduated from Danville High School in 1950 and then attended Iowa State University receiving a certificate in agriculture and farming. While at ISU, he was a member of Alpha Gamma Rho Fraternity and involved in the ROTC program. Dwayne served his country in the US Army and earned a Medal of Honor during the Korean Conflict.

On Dec. 27, 1958, he married Georgia Cash at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in Mt. Pleasant.

Dwayne owned and operated Mathews Angus farm for over 70 years. He was past president and secretary of Southeast Iowa Angus Association, served on the Des Moines County Fair Board, and a Lifetime member of the American Angus Association. In 2004, he earned the American Angus Association’s Historic Angus Herd Award for continuous production of registered Angus cattle by the same individual for more than 50 years.

He enjoyed flying remote-controlled airplanes, country western line dancing, riding motorcycles in the 70s, attending cattle shows, and going to state and county fairs. Dwayne had a beautiful voice. He sang in the choir and was a soloist for his high school graduation.

Survivors include his wife of 65 years Georgia of Danville; children Debbie Mathews of Danville, Steve (Sandra) Mathews of Harpers Ferry, West Virginia, Monica Myers of Burlington; eight grandchildren Ryan, Dylan, Blayne, Brooke, Nick, Marissa, Morgan, Johanna; ten great-grandchildren and sister-in-law Mary Mathews of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Dr. Leslie Mathews, and son-in-law Jim Myers.

The celebration of life service for Dwayne will be 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 8, 2023, at Lunning Chapel. Reverend Jacob Greiner will be celebrant. Military Rites will be performed by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard. The visitation will be 1 p.m. until the time of service. Inurnment will be in Jaggar Cemetery.

A memorial has been established for the Des Moines County Fair.

According to his wishes, cremation has been entrusted to Lunning Chapel.

John Neil Duttweiler passed away Nov. 14, 2023, in Mount &nbsp;Pleasant, surrounded by his family.&nbsp; He was 64 years old.

Johnny was born Feb. 26, 1959 in Washington, Iowa, the son of John C. and Marjorie McKay Duttweiler.&nbsp; Johnny was a beautiful soul with a smile that would consistently win folks over.&nbsp; He had a passion for life.&nbsp; He loved music and his guitar.&nbsp; He liked chocolate milkshakes and French fries, and spending time drawing.&nbsp; Johnny also loved the Boy Scouts, Special Olympics, and bowling. &nbsp;He loved fishing and spending time with his family.&nbsp; His sense of humor and infectious laugh will be missed by all who loved him, but his memory will live in our hearts forever.

Johnny’s family includes his cherished mother, Marjorie; siblings, Deborah (the late Ira) Stewart of Burlington, Laura (Kim) DeBower of Apopka, Fla., and Kenneth Duttweiler of Burlington; several cousins; and three generations of nieces and nephews.

Sadly, Johnny is preceded in death by his father; grandparents, aunts, and uncles.

Cremation services have been entrusted to Prugh Funeral Service.

John Neil Duttweiler

Theresia Solotko Wilson, 100, of Burlington, died peacefully Saturday, Nov. 11, 2023, at the OakView Nursing Home and Rehabilitation in Burlington with her loving daughter Dorothy at her side.

Theresia was born Sept. 22, 1923, in Legau, Germany, the daughter of Albert and Hildard Lamle Endres. &nbsp;Theresia married her first husband, John Solotko, on Jan. 20, 1947. &nbsp;Sadly, John passed away April 5, 1980. &nbsp;Theresia later married Orville Wilson on Dec. 1, 1984. &nbsp;They spent many wonderful years together before his death on Feb. 25, 2003.

Upon Theresia's move to the United States, she worked a number of positions, including working at Paul's Cafe, Willow Ware, Riley's Paint Factory, Bock's Greenhouse, Midwest Biscuit Company, and Tiffany's Bakery making those famous pink iced sugar cookies for everyone.

Theresia was an active member of Divine Mercy Parish and enjoyed volunteering for the Salvation Army. She loved gardening, cooking, knitting, animals, reading, spending time with great-grandchildren, and was always giving to others. &nbsp;Theresia was known as the Christmas cookie lady. &nbsp;She loved baking beautiful cookies and giving them away to see the joy it brought. &nbsp;She was a consummate caretaker for many in their tougher moments and her kind heart was boundless. &nbsp;She loved to laugh and have fun, play card games and share her happiness with others. &nbsp;Theresia's mother imparted these words when Theresia left Germany in 1949 - "Don't forget your religion, don't forget the place you were born, and live every day like it was your last".

Theresia's family includes her daughter, Dorothy Endres of Burlington; four grandchildren, Jeff Combs of Burlington, Tony Boulton of West Burlington, Wendy Stein of Portland, Ore., and Theresia Graham of Marshfield, Vt.; five great-grandchildren, Willow, Apple, Fivel, Satchel, and Clementine; three sisters, Mary Montgomery, Agathe Allgower, and Helena Fellner; one brother, Toni Endres, and special friends, Mary Rose Orth, and Sue Mumme.

Besides her husbands, Theresia was preceded in death by her parents; her son, John Jr., and daughter, Donna Hanson; four brothers, Magnus Endres, Leo Endres, Sylvester Endres, and Altobert Endres; infant siblings, Joseph, Helnea, and Oulale; and brother-in-law, Fred.

Visitation will be from noon to 7 p.m. with the family to receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 20, 2023, at Prugh Funeral Service, 3940 Division Street.&nbsp; A Rosary for Theresia is scheduled for Monday at 4 p.m., also at the funeral home.

The Funeral Mass of the Resurrection for Mrs. Wilson will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 21, 2023, at Divine Mercy Parish-SS. Mary and Patrick Catholic Church, West Burlington. Burial will be immediately after Mass in Aspen Grove Cemetery.&nbsp;

Memorials have been established for Divine Mercy Parrish and the Des Moines County Humane Society.

She loved gardening, cooking, knitting, animals, reading, spending time with great-grandchildren, and was always giving to others. &nbsp;Theresia was known as the Christmas cookie lady. &nbsp;She loved baking beautiful cookies and giving them away to see the joy it brought. &nbsp;She was a consummate caretaker for many in their tougher moments and her kind heart was boundless. &nbsp;She loved to laugh and have fun, play card games and share her happiness with others. &nbsp;Theresia's mother imparted these words when Theresia left Germany in 1949 - "Don't forget your religion, don't forget the place you were born, and live every day like it was your last".Theresia's family includes her daughter, Dorothy Endres of Burlington; four grandchildren, Jeff Combs of Burlington, Tony Boulton of West Burlington, Wendy Stein of Portland, Ore., and Theresia Graham of Marshfield, Vt.; five great-grandchildren, Willow, Apple, Fivel, Satchel, and Clementine; three sisters, Mary Montgomery, Agathe Allgower, and Helena Fellner; one brother, Toni Endres, and special friends, Mary Rose Orth, and Sue Mumme.Besides her husbands, Theresia was preceded in death by her parents; her son, John Jr., and daughter, Donna Hanson; four brothers, Magnus Endres, Leo Endres, Sylvester Endres, and Altobert Endres; infant siblings, Joseph, Helnea, and Oulale; and brother-in-law, Fred.Visitation will be from noon to 7 p.m. with the family to receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 20, 2023, at Prugh Funeral Service, 3940 Division Street.&nbsp; A Rosary for Theresia is scheduled for Monday at 4 p.m., also at the funeral home.The Funeral Mass of the Resurrection for Mrs. Wilson will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 21, 2023, at Divine Mercy Parish-SS. Mary and Patrick Catholic Church, West Burlington. Burial will be immediately after Mass in Aspen Grove Cemetery.&nbsp;Memorials have been established for Divine Mercy Parrish and the Des Moines County Humane Society.

Marjorie Wheeler died Monday, Nov. 13, 2023, surrounded by her family in Morning Sun.

Marjorie was born Dec. 15, 1932, in Burlington, the daughter of Guy and Maud Warren Jamison. &nbsp;Marjorie graduated from Wapello High School before going to school for training to be a phone operator. &nbsp;She later went on to own and operate a bed and breakfast called Marge’s Roost for 10 years.

Marjorie was a member of Centenary Morning Sun Methodist Church and attended the Yarmouth Baptist Church.&nbsp; In addition, she was also a member of Midway Circle, Jolly Jokers Club, Linger Longer Club, Legion Auxiliary in Morning Sun, Sorosis Club, and the Sweet Adelines in Muscatine. &nbsp;Marjorie enjoyed horses, raising chickens, cooking, and teaching Sunday school. &nbsp;She loved dancing and was an ice cream connoisseur, with vanilla being her favorite. &nbsp;Anyone who knew Marjorie knew not to leave your glass unattended as she would clean it up whether you were done with it or not. &nbsp;Marjorie’s warmth and kindness will be missed, but her memory will continue on through all who love her.

Marjorie’s family includes her daughters, Roxanne (Bill) J. Spearman of Morning Sun, and Rosalind (Joe) Conrad of Iowa City; grandchildren, Jeremy Martin of Fort Madison, and Megan Anne (Francisco) Silva of Morning Sun; great-grandchildren, Adrian, Riley (Maggie), Naya, Dalton, Dakota, and Sadie Silva; and great-great grandchild, Felipe. &nbsp;Sadly, Marjorie is preceded in death by her husband, Jack; sisters, Martha Lou Fisher, Esther Rickert, and Mary Ellen Griffith; and her parents, Guy and Maud.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, Dec. 10, 2023, from 2-4 p.m. at the Morning Sun Community Center (106 N. Main St., Morning Sun, IA).

Emma Renee Stevens, 20, of Biggsville, Ill., died Wednesday, Nov. 15, 2023.

Born July 19, 2003, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Gabriel Stevens and Shannon Leasch Bielser.

Emma was a graduate of West Central High School and was currently attending the nursing program at Southeastern Community College.

She worked for Wal-Mart in online and store pick-up.

Emma was an amazing person and a dedicated student. Her passion was to become a pediatric nurse. She loved her family time and was very close to all of her siblings and enjoyed traveling out of town, reading, watching movies, hanging out with friends, and her time to herself.

She is survived by her parents; Shannon Bielser of Burlington and Gabriel and Alexsha Stevens of Biggsville, Ill.; three brothers, Hunter Bielser of Burlington and Jackson Stevens and Griffen Stevens both of Biggsville; one sister Josie Stevens of Biggsville and a sibling on the way; maternal grandmother Jan Berrong of Wever and maternal grandfather Roy Leasch of Mississippi; paternal grandparents Miles and Deborah Krieger of Burlington; aunts, uncles and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her aunt Jamie Leasch.

Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 21 at Lunning Chapel. The funeral service be held following the visitation at 11 a.m. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for the Pediatric Department at Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center.

Emma Renee Stevens

Zeta Sue Payne Shannan, 87, of West Burlington, died Wednesday, Nov. 15, 2023, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in West Burlington.

Born Aug. 1, 1936, he was raised on a farm SW of Bonaparte, she was the daughter of C.C. “Chuck” and Dorothy Story Payne. She graduated Bonaparte High School and attended the Iowa Business School in Ottumwa.

She married Joe Shannan on Oct. 22, 1955, in Bonaparte.

Zeta was a receptionist for several offices in the Burlington area and a homemaker. She was a member of West Burlington United Methodist Church and a past officer of the West Burlington PTA.

She was a great cook and loved playing cards, especially pinocle and pitch and traveling with her husband, visiting all 50 states and every presidential burial site. She enjoyed watching the St. Louis Cardinals and called daily to check on her children and grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband Joe Shannan of West Burlington; two children, Molly A. (Kevin) Christensen of Danville, Iowa and Troy L. (Amie) Shannan of Belleair Beach, Florida; six grandchildren, Dillon E. Christensen of Danville, Iowa, Brian J. Shannan of Ames, Iowa, Trever R. Shannan of Tampa, Florida, Terren C. Shannan of Tampa, Florida, Kate J. Shannan of Washington State and Landri L. Shannan of Westchester, Pennsylvania; daughter-in-law, Deb Shannan of Colorado; two nieces; one nephew and several cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Chuck and Dorothy Payne, daughter Tracy Shannan, son Jay Shannan and brother Jerry Payne.

The funeral service for Mrs. Shannan will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 18 at Lunning Chapel. The Rev. Nancy Sutherland will officiate. Interment will be in Thompson Cemetery, rural Bonaparte, Iowa.

Visitation will be Friday, Nov. 17 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Lunning Chapel where the family will receive friends.

Memorials have been established for the West Burlington United Methodist Church, the Special Needs Foundation for the Thompson Cemetery Fund.

Mary Jannings, 88, of Burlington, Iowa, died Wednesday, November 15, 2023, at the Klein Center in West Burlington.

Born December 15, 1934, in Andalusia, Alabama, she was the daughter of Dennis and Aileen (Deshazo) White. She married Robert Jannings on September 14, 1955, in Panama City, Florida. He died June 17, 2013.

She was a dedicated and very devoted member of Asbury United Methodist Church.

Mary served as a girl scout leader and enjoyed sewing and baking cookies and loved time spent with her grandchildren.

Survivors include her three children; Les (Lori) Jannings, Elaine Wunnenberg and Teresa (Jack) Brissey all of Burlington; nine grandchildren; two step grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; three step great-grandchildren; siblings, Joy Powell of Alabama, David White of Ohio, Omer White of Georgia and Ann Jenkins of Texas and several nieces and nephews.
