Suzanne L. Schoenewe, 70, of Burlington, died Saturday, Nov. 4, 2023, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born July 23, 1953, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Emmert George and Louise Cecelia Schrader Schoenewe.&nbsp;

She was a member of Divine Mercy Parish-St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. Suzanne loved shopping, listening to music, spending time outside and taking walks. She really enjoyed the Christmas season and loved watching Christmas shows, especially the Hallmark channel.&nbsp; Suzanne enjoyed spending time with her family.

Survivors include two brothers, Fred Schoenewe of West Burlington and George (Marsha) Schoenewe of Burlington; five sisters, Tina (John) Graham of Burlington, Pam (Mark) Stuecker of St. Paul, Iowa, Theresa Wagner of Burlington, Carolyn Hardesty of Burlington and Nanette Schoenewe of Fairfield; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brother, Tom Schoenewe and sister-in-law, Sharon Schoenewe.

The funeral service for Ms. Schoenewe will be 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 9, 2023, at Prugh Funeral Service, 3940 Division Street with Deacon Gary Johnson officiating.&nbsp; Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.&nbsp; A time of food and fellowship will be held in the community room at Prugh Funeral Service following the burial.

A memorial has been established for the Oakview Nursing Home.

Ruth Darlene Stratton, 95, of West Burlington, died Sunday, Nov. 5, 2023, at her home.

Born March 12, 1928, in Aurora, Neb., she was the daughter of Walter Ira and Rosa Mae Grolze Leymaster. She married Sidney Stratton on June 30, 1951. He preceded her in death on Sept. 13, 2017.

Ruth began her working career as a telephone operator and then for Sylvania and I.A.A.P. She spent her later years helping her husband at their paint and wallpaper store.

She loved taking walks and was an avid reader, with her morning routine beginning with reading her Bible and a cup of coffee. Ruth was an excellent cook and loved cooking for holidays. She enjoyed watching Hallmark movies, completing find-a-word puzzles, bird watching and traveling with her daughters and grandchildren.

She is survived by her three daughters; Kathleen (Michael C.) Hoschek of West Burlington and Linda (Joel) Mason and Joanie (Jon) Snow both of Clear Lake; nine grandchildren; Heidi (Derek) Boyd, Amy Blume, Jeremy (Carrie) Lohmann, Jesse (Erika) Mason, Jennifer (Michael) Pope, Zachary (Rehema) Snow, Olivia Snow, Jon (Miquela) Snow and Joshua (Amber) Snow; 23 great grandchildren; Justin (Cass) Boyd, Austin Boyd, Sydney (Landon) Bowman, Paige Lohmann, Mackenzie Lohmann, Natalee Lohmann, Brevin Lohmann, Jackson Rose Mason, Laila Pope, Kameron Pope, Jemma Pope, Jonathan Snow, Josiah Snow, Alex Snow, Andrew Snow, Isaiah Snow, Jonah Snow, Judah Snow, Madelyn Snow, James Snow, Amelia Snow, Aliza Snow and Quinn Snow and four great-great grandchildren, Paislee Bowman, Noah Bowman, Weston Martzhan and Trytan Dobbs.

Martha A. Brakeville Mansheim, 64, died Saturday, Nov. 4, 2023, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in West Burlington.

Born May 3, 1959, in Coronado, Calif., she was the daughter of Beverley and Leona Stodt Brakeville. She was a 1977 graduate of Burlington Notre Dame.

She married Richard Mansheim on Oct. 10, 1981, they later divorced.

Martha worked for Tenneco Ignition Products for over 29 years. Previously she worked for Chittenden and Eastman, Montgomery Ward and J.C. Penney and served as a union steward for Champion.

Martha loved watching and raising birds and was a lover of all animals and cars, especially Ford Mustangs and a collector of “ugly statues”. She was a true cancer warrior and fought it hard. Although stubborn, she had a great sense of humor and loved to pick on people. She had a nickname for all those she loved and was always the first with a good movie quote.

She is survived by her significant other G. Alan Harvey of New Boston, Iowa; her dog “Duke”; four siblings, Tom (Christine) Brakeville of Middletown, Katherine Lloyd of West Burlington, Dorothy (Bill) Sanders of Donnellson, Iowa and Matt (Katherine) Brakeville of Burlington; step sister, Christa Burrell of Burlington and numerous much-loved nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Velva Brakeville and Richard and Minnie Stodt.

A celebration of life will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, Nov. 10 at Lunning Chapel. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service.

Memorials have been established for the Des Moines County Humane Society or the YMCA Journey House for Battered Women.

According to her wishes, cremation has been accorded and entrusted to the care of Lunning Chapel.

Joyce Hardin, 84, longtime resident of Oakville and currently of Mediapolis, died Sunday, Nov. 5, 2023, at the Azria Health Prairie Ridge in Mediapolis surrounded by her family.

Born June 8, 1939, in Louisa County, she was the daughter of Gene and Bonnie Pauline Fischer Faris. On Jan. 19, 1957, she married Ray Louis Hardin in Burlington. He died Nov. 25, 2002.

Joyce was a homemaker with various part time jobs. She loved to sew, crafting, quilting, gardening, mushroom hunting, berry picking, baking and canning. She was in bridge club for many years with her life long friends. Her greatest love was spending time with her family. She was of the Christian faith.

Survivors include her children, Mike Hardin of Wapello, Tari Heiniger of Wapello, Lori Hardin of Burlington, Gena (Tim) Heiniger of West Burlington, Joy (Forrest) Branch of Mediapolis; nine grandchildren, Megan (Scott) Spurgeon, Darcy Hardin, Kandi Heiniger Jenkins (JodyJenkins), Kristen (Bryan) Brown, Nick (Cara Rabik) Heiniger, Adam (Jillian Paris) Heiniger, Dustin Hardin, Morgan (Leelu Daigle) Branch, Logan Branch; eight great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; sister, Janet Johnson of Burlington; many nieces and nephews.

Joyce Hardin

Patricia Ann Oltman, 88, died peacefully surrounded by family on Oct. 15, 2023. She was a recent resident of Greenfield, Wis., moving here from Owensboro, Ky. where she lived for the past 30 years. Twenty of those years were spent with her best friend and companion, the late Gerry Trautner.

Patricia was born on June 28, 1935, in Muscatine, to the late George and Ernestine McFadden. She grew up in Burlington, where she graduated from Burlington Catholic High School and continued her education at St. Ambrose School of Nursing in Davenport. There she met and married John Oltman and had four daughters. They moved to Milwaukee, Wis., then later to Chattanooga, Tenn. where she earned her master’s degree in Psychiatric Nursing. Patricia and John then moved to Ellerbe, N.C. They later divorced. Patricia moved to Albuquerque, N.M. for a short time then later settled in Owensboro, Ky.

Survivors include her four daughters, Mayna (Jon) Foshey, Melissa Stearns, Shelley (Dave) Schram and Maureen “Rene” (Rocky) Moses; her three grandsons, Clayton (Nicole) Burlingame, Beau (Jeannette) Burlingame, and Spencer Moses; three great-grandsons, Barrett, Roy, and Darwin. Sisters, &nbsp;Marilyn (Jerry) Tobin, &nbsp;Anne Marie (Doug) Stewart, Brothers - Daniel McFadden and Joe (Eve) McFadden and many nieces and nephews.

Patricia had a huge group of wonderful friends. She brightened so many lives with her love and kindness. Everyone who met her loved and admired her. She brought a bright light to so many people’s lives.

She absolutely loved nature, feeding and watching her birds and looking at clouds and finding shapes in them. She had an amazing witty sense of humor and absolutely loved to dance. She will be missed so much.

The family wishes to thank the ProHealth Hospice team that cared for her in her final days. They are also very grateful for all the love and support from friends in Owensboro who were always willing to help her in times of need when her family was not able to be there.

A memorial Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated 11 AM, Saturday, November 11 at Divine Mercy Parish - St. Paul's Catholic Church (508 N. 4th Street, Burlington).  Patricia will be laid to rest at Sacred Heart Cemetery following a lunch at church.

Ramondo ‘Doe’ Maurice Randle died Saturday, Oct.28, 2023, at his home. Born April 17, 1975, in Galesburg, Ill., he was the son of Linda Randle and Jeff Summers. He met the love of his life, Michele Deitrick, in 1995 and they married on May 22, 2004, in Burlington.

Doe was a merchandiser for Coca-Cola for 22 years. He was an assistant football coach at Burlington High School for the past 9 years and previously coached football for Galesburg High School. He was a Third-Degree Master Mason at the W.L. Darrow Masonic Lodge #10, in Galesburg, Ill. as well as a member of Elks Lodge #84, in Burlington.

He will forever be known as “world's best papa,” an amazing father, husband, brother, and friend. Everyone Doe knew will cherish his impact on their lives, either through friendship, mentorship, or love. He knew how to have fun and had the uncanny ability to be the life of any party and loved his music. He was a passionate football coach and a mentor to the young men that he coached. Doe was a loyal Illini and Dallas Cowboys fan. When you saw Doe, he always had a smile on his face and a large hug waiting for you. It was clear that Doe loved his friends and above all, his family and God.

Doe is survived by his wife, Michele Randle of Burlington, three children Taylor and Tristan of Burlington, and Darius Randle (Fiancé Christine Toft) of Canton, Ill. Eight grandchildren Tayvion, Treyson, Jayniah, Jeremiah, Dacia, Zayvion, Raelynn, and Aviahna. His mother Linda Randle of Galesburg, Ill.; his in-laws, Dana Johnston of Burlington, and Rick (Sandy) Johnston of Montrose. Two sisters Stephanie (Johnell Hunt) Beamon of Southaven, Miss, and Danielle Lewis of Galesburg. Two brothers, Quincy and Eugene Summers of Champaign, Ill. Two brothers-in-law Jeremy Deitrick and Dane (Brittany) Johnston of St. Louis. His uncles who were so important to him and more than just uncles, Calvin (Melody) Randle, Greg (Alison) Turner, and George (Cindy) Turner. His grandfather-in-law Dallas Johnston. Many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Doe is reunited in heaven with his grandmother Vera Randle, father Jeff Summers, nephew Jason Lewis, father-in-law James “Jimmy-D” Deitrick, and Grandmothers-in-law Carol Paxton Hippe and Mary Lou Johnston.

Honoring his wishes, cremation has been entrusted to the care of Lunning Chapel. A Celebration of Life will be held on Dec. 2, 2023, at the Burlington Gym from 4 to 7 p.m. Please wear your favorite Dallas Cowboys, Illini, Burlington Grayhounds, or Silver Streak gear. Doe was a loyal Illini and Dallas Cowboys fan. When you saw Doe, he always had a smile on his face and a large hug waiting for you. It was clear that Doe loved his friends and above all, his family and God.Doe is survived by his wife, Michele Randle of Burlington, three children Taylor and Tristan of Burlington, and Darius Randle (Fiancé Christine Toft) of Canton, Ill. Eight grandchildren Tayvion, Treyson, Jayniah, Jeremiah, Dacia, Zayvion, Raelynn, and Aviahna. His mother Linda Randle of Galesburg, Ill.; his in-laws, Dana Johnston of Burlington, and Rick (Sandy) Johnston of Montrose. Two sisters Stephanie (Johnell Hunt) Beamon of Southaven, Miss, and Danielle Lewis of Galesburg. Two brothers, Quincy and Eugene Summers of Champaign, Ill. Two brothers-in-law Jeremy Deitrick and Dane (Brittany) Johnston of St. Louis. His uncles who were so important to him and more than just uncles, Calvin (Melody) Randle, Greg (Alison) Turner, and George (Cindy) Turner. His grandfather-in-law Dallas Johnston. Many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins.Doe is reunited in heaven with his grandmother Vera Randle, father Jeff Summers, nephew Jason Lewis, father-in-law James “Jimmy-D” Deitrick, and Grandmothers-in-law Carol Paxton Hippe and Mary Lou Johnston.Honoring his wishes, cremation has been entrusted to the care of Lunning Chapel. Alyce Marie Edwards, 75, of Burlington, died Wednesday, November 1, 2023, at her home.

She was born Jan. 8, 1948, in Omaha, Neb., the daughter of William and Hazel Andrews Childers. She married Keith Chenoweth on Nov. 2, 1968, in Burlington.

Alyce and Keith went on to raise two sons, Brad (Tonya) Chenoweth of Burlington and Mike (Toni) Chenoweth of Mediapolis. They later divorced. Alice then married William “Bill” Edwards on Aug. 9, 1997, in Illinois. They later divorced.

Alyce was a lover of all animals, especially her two cats Mike and Whitey, who were energetic greeters at the Tenderfoot Carpets store. She loved all of her grandchildren; which include Courtney Chenoweth, Mika Chenoweth and Charles Chenoweth and great-grandchildren, Madison, Maxwell and Eleanor.

Alyce loved gardening in her free time, feeding the birds, spending time with friends and family, reading novels and learning about her Lord and Savior. Most of all she LOVED spending time and visiting with her customers at Tenderfoot Carpets.

She is survived by her two sons; three grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; brother William (Diane) Childers of Omaha, Neb. and sister Sue Farnsworth of Grain Valley, Mo.

She was preceded in death by her parents and brother Kevin Childers.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Cremation has been accorded and entrusted to the care of Lunning Chapel.

Melissa Clare Fraise, 72, of Burlington, died Nov. 2, 2023, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Health Center in West Burlington.

Born on July 22, 1951, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Melvin O. and Florence Stoecker Davis. She married Randall “Randy” Fraise on Nov. 29, 1975. They later divorced.

She worked in production for General Electric for many years.

Melissa loved to go fishing, being outdoors, watch movies, going out to eat Chinese buffet, and spending time with her grandkids.

She is survived by her two daughters; Sarah Fraise of Rockford, Ill.and Sally Fraise of New Lenox, Ill.; three grandchildren, Alexander, Desmond and Charlotte; two sisters, Debbie Davis of Burlington and Betty Lou Forbes of Rolla, Mo.; brother Bill Davis of Georgia and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, John Davis in infancy and Robert Davis.

The visitation for Melissa will be from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Monday, Nov. 6 at Lunning Chapel. Graveside committal will be held in Kossuth Cemetery.

Audrey K. Smith, 96, of Burlington, died peacefully with family at her bedside on Nov. 1, 2023. Audrey was born Aug. 5, 1927, the daughter of Bruce and Hulda Poole. She graduated from Stockport High School in 1945 where she also was a member of the Lady Cardinal basketball team. She graduated from the Burlington Beauty Academy in 1946. She met her future husband William "Bill" Smith on a blind date arranged by his cousin. Audrey and Bill married on May 31, 1946. 

They had five children Debbie Kurtz (Terry) Peoria Ill., Donna Lee, Gary Smith (Connie) Rochester, Minn., Chris Hallgren (Jim), Gladstone Ill., and Diane Sands (Dave) Ozark Mo. Audrey was a working mother retiring from Winegard Company in 1986. She loved her time with family which over time grew to include 10 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and 10 nieces and nephews. Audrey was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers Stuart and Bob Poole, sister Maxine Veatch, her husband Bill, and infant daughter Donna Lee. 

The family would like to extend their gratitude to the staff and residents of Addington Place who provided her great care and friendship. We’d also like to thank Freddy who served her daily meals with a smile and wit. We are grateful for Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice and their compassionate counsel and care.

John Lee Vass, 76, of Burlington, died Tuesday, Oct. 24, 2023, at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City.

Born Aug. 6, 1947, in Keokuk, he was the son of Ralph and Helen Logan Vass. John graduated from Nauvoo-Colusa High School in 1965. He graduated from trade school in Rock Island, Ill. He married Jean Petersen on Oct. 26, 1968, in Davenport.

John was a heavy construction equipment designer for J.I. Case and Cedarapids-Terex. He loved photography and could often be found at the local race tracks taking photos. He had many photos published in race magazines and papers over the years, including some cover shots. He was an announcer for Burlington softball games for several years and enjoyed watching his daughter play. He spent his free time reading, gardening, putting together model cars, and watching the Hawkeyes and any type of racing on TV. He enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandkids.

John will be lovingly remembered by his wife Jean of Burlington; two children, Jennifer (Rick) Vass-Kerns of Omaha, Neb.; Jeffrey Vass of Burlington; two grandchildren, Carter and Austin Kerns; and sister Marilyn (Robert) Mocella of Thorton, Colo. He was preceded in death by his parents.

A celebration of John's life will be held on Dec. 2, 2023, at Messiah Lutheran Church in Burlington from 1 to 3 p.m.

A memorial had been established in honor of John, with the Special Needs Foundation of Des Moines County

John Lee Vass

Shirley J. Willeford, 85, of Burlington, died Wednesday, Nov. 1, 2023, at the OakView Nursing Home and Rehabilitation in Burlington.

Born Oct. 30, 1938, in Illinois, she was the daughter of Howard &nbsp;and Mary Parker Frakes. On March 3, 1962, she married David "Itch" Willeford. He died on Sept. 16, 1988.

She graduated from Industry High School in Illinois.&nbsp;

After high school, Shirley moved to Chicago and started working in a restaurant. Over the years, she had worked for a number of companies in the area., including; IRC, AntennaCraft, Hooligan's, Burlington School System, and Fun Wash Laundromat.

Shirley enjoyed knitting, crocheting, and gardening. She loved her ice cream, and would occasionally make her own. Most of all, her family was very important to her. She enjoyed family gatherings and the reunions that they would have on the Fourth of July.&nbsp;

Survivors include her sons, Curt (Kelly) Willeford of Burlington and Steven (Shannon) Willeford of Spring Lake, Mich.; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchild; three sisters, Sandy (Larry) Marquis of Rushville, Ill., Mary Lynn (Craig) Bussanmas of Ark., and April Vaughn of Macomb, Ill.; and several nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, in-laws, Merl Bozo and Majorie Willeford, brother, Henry Frakes, two sisters, Norma Pleasant and Beulah Perkins, and brother-in-law, Charles Willeford.

The Graveside Service will be held in Aspen Grove at a later date.

A memorial has been established for Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice.

Kenneth R. “Kenny” McLaughlin, 62, of Mediapolis, died Saturday, Oct. 28, 2023, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in West Burlington.

Born Sept. 12, 1961, in Burlington, he was the son of Robert James and Karen Jeanne House McLaughlin. He was a 1980 graduate of Mediapolis High School.

Kenny married Deb Venhaus Wilkerson; they later divorced. He then married the love of his life Kimberly Allender Wagler after being together for 13 years, on Sept. 17, 2022.

He was a miner supervisor for the U.S. Gypsum plant for 34 years, in addition to being the “Tire Man” for Ken’s Tire and farming his family farm. He was a true “workaholic” and a big-hearted man; he would drop everything to help his family or friends in any way he could.

Kenny was very family-oriented, and his family meant the world to him. He loved working on his brother Boone’s racecar and attending all his daughters’ activities. Kim and Kenny traveled through life always together, by each other’s side with everything they did. They loved taking “ranger rides” and traveling to Wisconsin with friends. He was an easy-going guy, who did not know a stranger and at the end of the day, his world was ruled by his grandson John.

He is survived by his wife, Kim McLaughlin of Mediapolis; two daughters, Jordan (John) Ibbotson of Mt. Union and Kassidy McLaughlin (Josh Knipfer) of Winfield; grandson, John Lewis Ibbotson; stepchildren, Jesse Wagler of Burlington and Sara (Denny) Robinson of Burlington; three step-grandsons, Randy Wagler, Brayten Wagler, and Kyle Parker; three sisters, Cynthia (Craig) Willis of Clear Lake, Iowa and Dana (Doug) Atkins and Joan (Steve) Gray both of Burlington; two brothers, Greg McLaughlin and Daniel Boone (Jackie) McLaughlin both of Mediapolis and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and niece Kayla Atkins.

The visitation for Kenny will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, November 3 at Lunning Chapel. The memorial funeral service will be 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 4 at Lunning Chapel with Mr. Billy Meyers officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, Dodgeville.

Doug D. Heiniger, 66, of Wapello, died Sunday, Oct. 29, 2023, at his home surrounded by his family.

Born Jan. 17, 1957, in Burlington, he was the son of Harvey and Leola Frank Heiniger. He was a 1975 graduate of Mediapolis High School and later graduated from Lincoln Technical School. He married the only love of his life, Tari Hardin on Jan. 21, 1978.

Doug worked as a mechanic for Hawkeye Motors, Bob's Standard &amp; Deery Brothers. He was a farmer on the family farm, Heiniger Agri Corp. He managed shipping at S&amp;J Tube and he also engraved tombstones for Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery. He most recently worked in the parts department at H&amp;L Mack.

He attended Cornerstone Church in Mediapolis.

Farming was Doug’s passion, and he was born and raised a Chevy guy. He loved being a mechanic and was literally a master of all trades. He enjoyed gardening and woodworking and most importantly time spent with his family, his girls, and his grandchildren. Doug was always concerned for others, above himself.

He is survived by his wife Tari Heiniger of Wapello; two daughters, Kandi Heiniger Jenkins (Jody Jenkins) of Waterloo, and Kristen (Bryan) Brown of Mediapolis; two grandchildren, Brystol Brown and Brylee Brown; brother, Tim Heiniger of West Burlington; sister, Sandy Heckenberg of Georgia and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers Larry Heiniger and Mike Heiniger.

The funeral service for Doug will be 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 3 at Lunning Chapel. Friend and Brother in Christ Chuck Ealey will officiate. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 2 at Lunning Chapel where the family will receive friends.

William Richard “Dick” Archer, 75, of Burlington, died Saturday, Oct. 28, 2023, at the Southeast Iowa Medical Center in West Burlington. Born Feb. 22, 1948, in Mystic, Iowa, he was the son of Thomas and Wilamina Goldene Mattox Archer. On June 4, 1977, he married Della Anne Magno in Schaumburg, Ill..

He was diagnosed in the fall of 2001 with Stiff Person Syndrome by Dr. Ergun Uc in Iowa City. He was believed to be one of the longest-surviving males with SPS in the United States.

He graduated from Hononegah Community High School in Rockton, Ill. In June 1974, he graduated from Western Illinois with a degree in accounting. Later on, he earned his CPA designation.

Dick was a U.S. Air Force Veteran, serving during the Vietnam War from Aug. 13, 1968 until Aug. 11, 1972. He was very proud to have served the country he loved.

He worked as a certified public accountant for McGladrey in Burlington. He later became a financial vice president for Miller Beauty Supply and retired from EBS in Dec. of 2013.

Dick was an avid sports fan, especially with his Chicago Cubs and the Chicago Bears. He was also an avid sports fan at the kids' and grandkids’ games. Dick loved spending time and playing with his grandchildren. He was a great supporter of his wife’s decorating and creative projects. He planted a small garden every year in his backyard. He also enjoyed coffee with his friends, listening to country music, watching old westerns, looking at old cars, and Thanksgiving.

He was a generous person and donated to a number of organizations that touched his heart.

Survivors include his wife, Della Anne Archer of Burlington, two sons, Joe (Kay) Archer of Hiawatha, and Tyler (Shannon) Archer of Ankeny; grandchildren, Mason, Reece, Sawyer, and Lauren; sister Sue (Ray) Clifton; two brothers, Stuart (Janice) White, and Steve White; mother-in-law Jeanette Magno of Schaumburg, Ill.; and numerous cousins.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, parents, and father-in-law Joseph Magno.

Visitation with the family to receive friends will be from noon until 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 11, 2023, at Prugh Funeral Service, 3940 Division Street.

The memorial service for Mr. Archer will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 11, 2023, at Prugh Funeral Service, 3940 Division Street with Pastor Jay Clover officiating. He attended a one-room school through 8th grade and then graduated from Wapello High School in 1956. He graduated in 1960, with a degree in Finance and Economics from Iowa Wesleyan College. He eventually found his way to Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company as a Financial Advisor. He enjoyed guiding individuals, couples, families, and business owners in preparing for a comfortable, happy, and productive retirement. Jerry retired after 57 years.

Jerry played football in High School and college which led to another passion - football officiating. He officiated for 58 years. He always said he loved it so much he would have done it for nothing! He was inducted into the Iowa High School Football Athletic Association Officials Hall of Fame. He hung up his whistle in 2022.

Jerry was instrumental in beginning the Purple and Gray Foundation for the purpose of renovating Bracewell Stadium. He was also active in the Burlington Chamber of Commerce.&nbsp;

Jerry met Patricia "Pat" Murphy at Iowa Wesleyan and they were married in 1961. Sons, Jay Dee (Stephanie) and Chris Allen were born in 1962 and 1967. They are the proud grandparents of Jack and Jared, all of Dallas, Texas.

Those left to honor his memory include his wife of 62 years, of Burlington; son, Jay Dee and wife, Stephanie, of Dallas, Texas; grandsons, Jack and Jared of Texas; brothers, Tom of Burlington and Larry of Las Vegas, Nev; sisters, Joyce Stych of Muscatine and Judy Morgan of Tucson, Ariz.; many cousins, nieces, and nephews; and his morning coffee buddies at Pookies.

Bertha Irene Hecox King, 90, of New London, formerly West Burlington, died Tuesday, Oct. 31, 2023, at New London Specialty Care.&nbsp;&nbsp;She was born Jan. 22, 1933 in Rockton, Ill. to Leon C. and Mary Seitz Hecox.&nbsp;&nbsp;She was a 1951 graduate of Burlington High School and was a member of New London United Methodist Church.&nbsp;&nbsp;In 1981 she married Bruce King at the “We’ve Only Just Begun Wedding Chapel” in Las Vegas, Nevada.&nbsp;&nbsp;

She was a secretary with the G2 Army at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C.; was employed at the United Mine Workers; secretary for International Resistance; and “Make Today Count” which was inspired by Wanda Kelley.&nbsp;&nbsp;She enjoyed fishing, bingo, Riverside Casino, playing cards, and especially gardening, as she once owned and operated a greenhouse in West Burlington.&nbsp;&nbsp;

She is survived by her husband, Bruce B. King of New London; stepson Dennis King of Houston, Texas; stepdaughter Mary Eddings of Dennison, Texas; step grandchildren and step great-grandchildren; sister Myrna (Dale) Speidel of Vinton; and many dear nieces and nephews.&nbsp;&nbsp;She was preceded in death by her parents; daughter Debbie; sisters Mary and Nellie; and brothers Donald “Jake”, Dale, Robert, Francis “Butch” and Lorin “Sam”.&nbsp;&nbsp;

John Elliott Harris, 86, of Burlington, died Sunday, Oct. 29, 2023, at his home surrounded by family.

Born April 3, 1937, in Little Rock, Ark., he was the son of John Huskey and Obelia Harris. On May 12, 1980, he married Sharon Kaye Shaw in Burlington.&nbsp;

John moved to Burlington with Armour Dial. He then worked for the UA Local Union 125 as a plumber/pipefitter and worked in Aurora, Ill., Muscatine, and Cedar Rapids.&nbsp;

He was a U.S. Air Force Veteran, serving for 10 Years.

John loved cooking to the point he had a BBQ restaurant in Galesburg, Ill., and ran a few taverns over the years, including; Dixie Tavern, John's, and DJ's Bars for a combined 30 years. He had a big heart and was glad to help anyone, from cars to handyman work. John also enjoyed golf and watching Bull Riding.

Survivors include his wife, Sharon Kaye Harris; four sons, John Camper of Tulsa, Okla., Donald C. Hunt, John W. Hunt and Michael E. (Kim) Hunt all of Burlington; two daughters, Tiffany Lynn Harris of Burlington, and Sheila Renee (Lonnie) Jones of Quincy, Ill.; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; three sisters, Evette Harris and her daughter, Shanielle Clorid, Charlotte Johnson, and Doris Mack Ray all of Little Rock, Ark.; two sisters-in-law, Marilyn Milam of Fayetteville, N.C. and Raye Bramlett of Burlington; brother-in-law, DeEdwin Shaw of Burlington, as well as several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother Eddy Mack, and two sisters Brenda Hodges and Ida Rose Brown.

Lester E. Plath, 71, of West Burlington, died Sunday, Oct. 29, 2023, at his home surrounded by family.

Born Aug. 25, 1952, in Centerville, he was the son of Virgil Edward and Ethel Loree Bartusek Plath. On July 21, 1972, he married Debra Sue Long in Burlington.&nbsp;

He worked for J.I. Case and retired after 30 years at the age of 49 to which he enjoyed his retirement very much. Lester was a lifetime member of Union Local 807. He was an avid motorcycle rider and builder, and he loved golf, gardening, and mowing his lawn. Family was extremely important to him and he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. Lester was very proud to have worked hard in his life and built himself the American dream.

Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Debra Sue Plath of West Burlington; daughter, Jennifer (Nathan) Anthony of LeClaire: son, Brian Plath of West Burlington; five grandchildren, Madison (Chane) Anthony, Quinlynn Anthony, Dalton Icenogle, Bella and Lexington Plath; siblings, Robert&nbsp; Plath, Darlene Shankle, Sharon Willits, John (Jacque) Plath, Carol Forrester and Randy (Lori) Plath; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Sandra (Don) Marlette.

Mary Evelyn “Diane” Hostetter, 76, of Burlington, died Saturday, Oct. 28, 2023, at her home.

She was born March 26, 1947, in San Bernadino, Calif.. She married John D. Hostetter Jr. on Jan. 15, 1966, in Bloomington, Calif. He died Aug. 6, 2022.

Diane worked for Midwest Biscuit and more recently in housekeeping for AmericInn.

She was a great mother and cherished her family. She loved playing bingo and cards and going to the casino. She enjoyed watching game shows, Yellowstone and Bones, and crossword puzzles. She loved harassing her boys and most important to her was spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Diane is survived by her two sons; John (Billie) Hostetter of Burlington and Frank (Jennifer) Hostetter of Collins, Ga.; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; her father-in-law John D. Hostetter Sr. of West Burlington; her sister-in-law Pam Bergquist of West Burlington and niece Lydia Bergquist and nephew Brian Bergquist.

She was preceded in death by her husband and son Roy Hostetter.

Per her wishes, there will be no funeral services and cremation has been entrusted to the care of Lunning Chapel.

Burial will be in Burlington Memorial Park Mausoleum at a later date.

Carrie Anne Wagler, 66, of Burlington, died Monday, Sept. 25, 2023, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in West Burlington.

Born Aug. 3, 1957, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Don and Anne (Lovely) Hensley. On May 15, 1995, she married Darrell Wagler in Burlington. She was a member of Zion United Church of Christ.

Carrie graduated from Burlington High School. She worked for the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant. She was the executive assistant to the Plant Manager. She retired after 26 years of service.

Carrie enjoyed gardening, knitting and cross-stich. She created many beautiful cross-stitch pieces. Carrie was a collector of Hummel figurines and blown-glass witch’s balls.

Survivors include her husband, Darrell of Burlington; one son Matthew (Jen) Kranzler of New London; three sisters Leanne Hullett of Rock Island, Ill., Mary Beth Lemkau of Muscatine, and Janet (Michael) Bohnenkamp of Stronghurst, Ill., and granddaughter Clarabelle.

She was preceded in death by her parents and sister Virginia Turner.

Per her wishes, cremation has been accorded and entrusted to the care of Lunning Chapel.

The graveside service for Carrie will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 4, 2023 at Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the Des Moines County Humane Society.
