Michael E. Sink, Sr., 73, of Burlington, died Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2024 at his home.

Born Dec. 7, 1950, in Burlington, he was the son of Donald E. and Wanda Lee Dile Sink.

Michael graduated from Burlington High School and Trade School. He married Wilma Sickle Porter Sept. 26, 1992, in Burlington and from this blended family, raised six children.

Michael began working at age 18 for the CB&amp;Q Railroad, Burlington Northern which became Burlington Northern Santa Fe. He worked there as a boilermaker for 43 years.

He was quite the historian, citing dates and history of wars and other events in the past. Michael liked building for home improvement and was very knowledgeable and particular about his work. He like going to the Big Hollow shooting range with his friend and co-worker from the railroad, Jerry McCormick.

After a motorcycle accident Michael was not able to return to his craft as a boilermaker, but kept busy with exploring many ways to keep busy. He enjoyed cooking, baking and finding new recipes to try. He always encouraged friends and family to try his new recipes, insisting they try a bite, even if not hungry or on a diet.

Survivors include his wife Wilma of Burlington; children Michael E. Sink, Jr of Bald Knob, Ark., Jason (Stacey) Sink of Ft. Madison, Sarah (Danny) Casey of Blytheville, Ark., Michelle (John) Kibling of Burlington, Deidra Porter Bowman of Burlington, and John Wesely Porter of Texas; 15 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren; one sister Judy (Kenny) Davis of Port Orange, Fla., and one brother Dennis (Debra) Sink of Burlington.

He was preceded in death by both parents.

Per his wishes, cremation has been accorded and entrusted to the care of Lunning Chapel. Inurnment will be at a later date in Aspen Grove Cemetery.

A memorial has been established for the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House.

Michael E. Sink Jr

Dale Warren Stewart, 74, of West Burlington, passed away peacefully on Monday, Sept. 23, 2024, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center.

Born July of 1950 in Burlington, he was the son of R.W. and Geneva Whitacre Stewart.&nbsp;

He was a 1968 graduate of West Burlington High School and attended the University of Northern Iowa after graduation. Before settling down in West Burlington to independently raise his daughter, he lived in the Quad Cities and Virginia Beach.

Dale dedicated nearly 25 years to working at Schaffer Golf Course in Fort Madison, which he enjoyed immensely. Outside of golf, Dale enjoyed spending time with friends and the simple pleasures in life; such as sweet treats, Iowa tenderloins with Sterzing's potato chips, and watching the St. Louis Cardinals.&nbsp;

Survivors include his daughter, Lucia Jackson of Cincinnati, OH; grandson, Oscar Franklin; twin brother, Dave Stewart of West Burlington; older brother, John (Jody) Stewart of Lenexa, Kan.; and older sister, Linda Davies of Wichita, Kan.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother-in-law, Smith Davies and a few radical friends who meant a lot to him.&nbsp;

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh Crematory.

A Celebration of Life for Dale will be Saturday, Nov. 2, 2024, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Boogaloo Cafe.

Douglas Alan Mattoon, 53, of Burlington, died Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2024, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born Oct. 28, 1970, in Burlington, he was the son of Warren L. and Sharon J. Haley Mattoon.

He graduated from Burlington High School. He attended Southeastern Community College and studied auto mechanics.

He was a very proud U.S. Marines Veteran.

Doug worked as a maintenance supervisor at the US Gypsum Sperry plant for 20 years. He spent many years helping his long time friend, Jim Scudder.

Doug enjoyed playing darts, watching WWE wrestling and car racing. Before his father's passing, he spent many hours helping him restore cars. He loved being with his grandbabies. Doug had a caring heart and was always doing what he could for others.&nbsp;

Survivors include his mother, Sharon J. Mattoon of Burlington; five children: Jordaan (Jacob Nettleton) Mattoon of Burlington, Shelby (Matthew) Fedder Mattoon of Colo., Brady Mattoon of CO, Austin Irthum of Colo., and Cody Earl of Colo.; furbabies, Jade and Ivy; four grandchildren, Mya, Hadley, Catalina and Delaney Fedder; granddogs, Swish and Blu; brother, Steven (Susan) Mattoon of Ill.; long-time Partner, Rhonda Snyder of Burlington; bonus children, Michelle Parnell and Alexandria Miscevich both of Burlington; and bonus grandchild, Ronan Penrod.

He was preceded in death by his father.&nbsp;

Douglas Alan Mattoon

Patrick Thomas McLaughlin, 92, of Burlington, passed away peacefully on Monday, Sept. 23, 2024, in his apartment at Addington Place in West Burlington.

Born in Burlington in 1931, he was the son of Daniel A. and Marie E. Fitzgerald McLaughlin. Pat lived in Burlington most of his life except during the great depression as a child, his family lived in the Dodgeville / Mediapolis area. On Sept. 19, 1953, he married Elsie Colleen Whitaker in Burlington. They celebrated many wonderful years until her passing on Feb. 3, 2023.

Pat worked for Carl A Nelson Construction, was a licensed real estate agent and finished his career working for over 15 years at the Iowa State Penitentiary. He would often joke that working with maximum security inmates was one of the most rewarding aspects of his career. In 1979 Pat opened the West Side Racquetball Club in West Burlington, Iowa and would own and operate the club for about 6 years prior to moving on to the Iowa State Penitentiary where he would retire from.

One of Pat's passions in life was the sport of handball, which was the catalyst for him opening the club in West Burlington. Pat would spend the 1970's and 1980's running handball leagues and tournaments in Burlington at the downtown YMCA and then the club in West Burlington. Family vacations would often be in conjunction with the national junior's handball tournaments that all three of his son's would compete in throughout their youth. Pat played handball competitively until he was about 84 years old and when he was 80, he traveled to Minneapolis for the national tournament and finished second in the doubles division for players 80 and above. Pat was also an avid hunter and traveler. He would often travel to Missouri to hunt with his son Pat and his grandson Drake. He also traveled to Africa for a hunting trip and several times to South America duck hunting with Pat Jr. He and Elsie traveled to Alaska, Mexico, Europe, Hawaii and went on several cruises.&nbsp;

Survivors include his sons, Patrick (Lori) McLaughlin of Dawn, Mo., Andrew (Yumiko Shiga) McLaughlin of Fort Myers, Fla., and Matt (Melanie) McLaughlin of Lenexa, Kan.; &nbsp;four grandchildren, Lauryn McLaughlin of Shawnee, Kan., Drake McLaughlin of Ames, Madison McLaughlin of Lenexa, Kan., and Tengi Shiga of New York, N.Y.; and two sisters, Linda K (Tom) Clayton and Rosemary Carol Abel, both of Burlington.

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers: Dan and Eugene McLaughlin, three sisters: Lorraine Hockett, Rita Smith, and Joan Riley.

Vincent E. Moser, 67, of Burlington, Iowa, died Saturday, Sept.&nbsp; 21, 2024, at his home.

Born on Dec. 2, 1956, in Burlington, he was the son of Leslie and Mary Little Moser. On April 24, 1982, in Burlington, he married Nancy Helling.

Vincent worked for the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant for many years before he retired. He enjoyed duck and turkey hunting and playing cards. He loved to watch the St. Louis Cardinals and Miami Dolphins. Doing yard work was not a chore, he loved to take good care of his yard and cleaning the pool, where he often times called “Pool Boy”. Vincent was always willing to lend a helping hand. Hosting Super Bowl and Fourth of July parties was always fun for him. Most of all Vincent loved being with his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife Nancy; daughters: Cassie (Justin Duerksen) Moser, Carrie Moser and Corrie (Alex Garrels) Moser all of Burlington; two grandchildren: Caitlinn and Riland Coombs of Burlington; four great grandchildren: Geordie, Jakoby, Nessa and Willow all of Burlington; sister Shelly (John) Whooley of Burlington and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers: Mike Moser and Duane Moser and sister Sandra Rice.

Per his wishes cremation has been entrusted and accorded with Lunning Chapel.

Vincent E. Moser

Carolyn A. Miller, 87, of Burlington, Iowa died peacefully at Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House on Sept. 21, 2024. She was born in Burlington on May 3, 1937, to Glenn and Vivian Milton Miller. Carolyn’s life was one of service and sacrifice grounded in Christian love. Earning a BS and MA in Nursing at the University of Iowa and Certification in Nurse-Midwifery at Else Inglis Maternity Hospital in Edinburg, Scottland, she spent the majority of her professional life from 1966 to 1990 as a medical missionary with the Lutheran Church in America (now ELCA) serving as a nursing and midwifery practitioner and instructor at Phebe Hospital &amp; School of Nursing and Cuttington University College in rural Liberia, West Africa. She served the goal of educating nurses who could eventually take over key nursing and teaching positions and improve healthcare in the country long term. In response to her witnessed need to reduce the high maternal and infant mortality in the country, she started a class for Certified Midwives writing the curriculum so that those with a 6th grade level of education could be adequately trained in safe midwifery practices. In 1980, she founded the Phebe Hospital Midwifery School to train BSN Nurse-Midwives in midwifery and teaching skills to prepare midwifery educators, one of only two in West Africa at the time. While she claimed the founding of this school as her greatest professional achievement, she noted that her student’ achievements were really her greatest achievements. The magnitude of the impact she made on maternal healthcare in rural Liberia cannot be overstated. In 1976, she was awarded the Knight Commander of the Liberian Humane Order of African Redemption by Liberian President William R. Tolbert Jr. for her work. In 2023, the maternity ward at Phebe Hospital was rededicated as the Carolyn A. Miller Maternity Ward to recognize her contributions. Known most commonly as Miss Miller, she also proudly accepted the titles of Aunty, Mommy, and Old Ma from hundreds of Liberians, often helping to pay their school fees and supporting the babies she delivered long into life. After returning to the United States in 1990, she and her family continued to support Phebe Hospital through Liberia’s 14 year-long civil war by shorting and shipping over 60 tons of donated medical supplies to the hospital providing much-needed assistance. She worked at Maternal Health Center in Bettendorf, Iowa until her retirement in 2002. She then kept busy by volunteering with hospice, serving as an elementary student mentor, participating in a writers’ group, staying active at Messiah Lutheran Church, and spending extremely valuable time with her biological family while keeping in close contact with her Liberian “family.”

Carolyn is survived by her siblings - Venita (Don) Myatt, Janis Miller, and Tom (Lorna) Miller all of Burlington, nephews - Dan Myatt, Steve Myatt, and Tim (Marla) Myatt all of Burlington and Titan (Danielle) Miller of Tehachapi, Calif., niece – Dione (Ben) Stepanek of La Crosse, Wis., two great nephews, one great niece, and many Liberian and Missionary “family.” She was preceded in death by her parents, Glenn and Vivian Miller, niece, Gena Myatt, and many Liberian friends and “family.”

Visitation will be 5 p.m to 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 4 at Lunning Chapel where the family will receive friends. The funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 5 at Messiah Lutheran Church. Pastor Damisha McFarland-Pollock will officiate. Interment will be in Spring Grove Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to support Global Health Ministries, Messiah Lutheran Church, and scholarships for K-12 students at the Carolyn A. Miller School in Monrovia, Liberia.

In response to her witnessed need to reduce the high maternal and infant mortality in the country, she started a class for Certified Midwives writing the curriculum so that those with a 6th grade level of education could be adequately trained in safe midwifery practices. In 1980, she founded the Phebe Hospital Midwifery School to train BSN Nurse-Midwives in midwifery and teaching skills to prepare midwifery educators, one of only two in West Africa at the time. While she claimed the founding of this school as her greatest professional achievement, she noted that her student’ achievements were really her greatest achievements. The magnitude of the impact she made on maternal healthcare in rural Liberia cannot be overstated. In 1976, she was awarded the Knight Commander of the Liberian Humane Order of African Redemption by Liberian President William R. Tolbert Jr. for her work. In 2023, the maternity ward at Phebe Hospital was rededicated as the Carolyn A. Miller Maternity Ward to recognize her contributions. Known most commonly as Miss Miller, she also proudly accepted the titles of Aunty, Mommy, and Old Ma from hundreds of Liberians, often helping to pay their school fees and supporting the babies she delivered long into life. After returning to the United States in 1990, she and her family continued to support Phebe Hospital through Liberia’s 14 year-long civil war by shorting and shipping over 60 tons of donated medical supplies to the hospital providing much-needed assistance. She worked at Maternal Health Center in Bettendorf, Iowa until her retirement in 2002. She then kept busy by volunteering with hospice, serving as an elementary student mentor, participating in a writers’ group, staying active at Messiah Lutheran Church, and spending extremely valuable time with her biological family while keeping in close contact with her Liberian “family.”Carolyn is survived by her siblings - Venita (Don) Myatt, Janis Miller, and Tom (Lorna) Miller all of Burlington, nephews - Dan Myatt, Steve Myatt, and Tim (Marla) Myatt all of Burlington and Titan (Danielle) Miller of Tehachapi, Calif., niece – Dione (Ben) Stepanek of La Crosse, Wis., two great nephews, one great niece, and many Liberian and Missionary “family.” She was preceded in death by her parents, Glenn and Vivian Miller, niece, Gena Myatt, and many Liberian friends and “family.”Visitation will be 5 p.m to 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 4 at Lunning Chapel where the family will receive friends. The funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 5 at Messiah Lutheran Church. Pastor Damisha McFarland-Pollock will officiate. She was a 1966 graduate of Burlington High School.

She was a homemaker, wife and mother. She was Seventh Day Adventist.

Carol loved sewing, gardening, reading and was an animal lover. She was the best mom, grandma and great grandma ever.

She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Denny Rose of Burlington; three children, Angela L. (Stephen – Deceased) DeFosse of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, Dawn R. Blake of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and Timothy A. Bonnie J. Willdrick, 69, of rural Dallas City, Ill., died Friday evening, Sept. 20, 2024 at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in West Burlington.&nbsp;

Bonnie was born Nov. 6, 1954 at the LaHarpe Hospital the daughter of Glenn and Dorothy Bartlett Snyder. On June 22, 1974, she married Gene Willdrick at the Burnside United Methodist Church.&nbsp;

Mrs. Willdrick was a 1972 graduate of LaHarpe High School. Shortly after high school she began working at General Electric in Burlington. Once her children were born, she stayed home to raise her family. During this time, she also was a foster parent, volunteered with the Lomax Ambulance for 12 years and drove a school bus for the Dallas City, LaHarpe, Nauvoo, and Fort Madison Schools for over 16 years. Once her children were older, she returned to GE in Burlington. Following her retirement, she remained active working for the Bank of Stronghurst at their Dallas City location. She enjoyed riding motorcycles, traveling, yard work and cutting wood for the winter. Bonnie was a lifelong platelet donor, which she took great pride in.

Survivors include her husband, Gene, three children: Dottie (Kurt) Pfeiff of West Burlington, Iowa, Russell (Natalie) Willdrick of East Peoria, Illinois and Marcus Willdrick of Dallas City; eight grandchildren: Tyler Willdrick, Garet Palmer, Julissa Willdrick, Carter Willdrick, Jaylee Willdrick, Spencer Pfeiff, Parker Pfeiff, and River Pfeiff and seven great-grandchildren.&nbsp;

Also surviving are Bonnie’s siblings: Beverly (Steven) Brunk of Danville, Iowa, Barbara (Edward) Burford of Warsaw, Illinois, Betty (Rene) Medina of Denmark, Iowa, Becky (Larry) Flowers of West Burlington, Iowa, Chester (Joyce) Snyder of Colusa, Illinois, Billie Mosher of Ft. Sharon Eloise Warner, 77, of Burlington, died Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2024 at Oakview Nursing and Rehabilitation in Burlington.

Born on Feb. 28, 1947, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Frank and Maxine Russell Warner.

Sharon enjoyed visiting with friends, especially her best friend Barb. She also enjoyed playing Bingo with her friends at Oakview. Sharon loved spending time with her family and attending family gatherings.

She is survived by her son Scott Carman; brother Russell (Martha) Warner; grandchildren: Krystal (Darrick) Blair, Kimberlee (Matt) Pohlman, Jacob (Sam) Carman, Chance Carman, Courtney Carman, Kristin Carman, Baylee Ruggles, Mia Ruggles and Nathan Ruggles; several great grandchildren and cousins Nancy Pilger and Larry Russell.

Patricia Ann Van Niewaal, 88, of Lomax, Illinois, died Friday, Sept. 13, 2024 at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in West Burlington.

&nbsp;Patricia was born March 18, 1936 in Ottumwa, the daughter of Harold and Ollie Annis Hartley. On Aug. 24, 1957 she married Ronald D. Van Niewaal in Pella. He preceded her in death July 9, 2019.

&nbsp;Mrs. VanNiewaal was raised and educated in the Ottumwa area. She began working at a young age to help provide for her family. Shortly after her marriage, she and Ronnie relocated to Lomax, where she would spend the rest of her life as homemaker. She loved her family and especially loved cooking for her children and grandchildren. She was a member of the Lomax Saddle Club and attended Wednesday bingo night in Lomax, where she provided meals and desserts to fund-raise for the Lomax Haunted House Boys. She also enjoyed attending the Auction House in Ft. Madison.&nbsp;

&nbsp;Survivors include four children: Vikki Bowers of Lomax, Rod (Jeannie) Van Niewaal of Carman, Illinois, Ronnie Walker of Keosauqua, Iowa and Melissa Walker of Ft. Madison; 16 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren and a special niece: Tina (Rick) Kienlen of Burlington.&nbsp;

&nbsp;Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; one son: Randy Van Niewaal; one daughter in infancy: Brenda Van Niewaal and three siblings: Harold and Harry Hartley and Dorothy Enloe.&nbsp;

&nbsp;The family plans a graveside service, for Ronald and Patricia, at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 27, 2024 at Crane Cemetery, near Lomax, Illinois. Betty Gene Link, 98, of LaHarpe, Ill., died&nbsp; Saturday, Sept. 14, 2024 at Oak Lane Nursing &amp; Rehab in Stronghurst, Illinois.&nbsp;

Betty was born Aug. 12, 1926 in Macomb, Ill., the daughter of William Henry and Nora Edith (Taylor) Hobby. On September 14, 1946 she married Donald P. “Soup” Link in LaHarpe. He preceded her in death Feb. 7, 1998.&nbsp;

Betty attended Gilead country school east of LaHarpe and later graduated from the Burlington Beauty Academy. For a short time, she operated her own beauty shop in LaHarpe, before working as a nurses aide at the LaHarpe Hospital. She spent the later years of her career as a home health nurse.&nbsp;

Betty enjoyed babysitting her grandchildren, baking, attending flea markets and Spoon River Drive. She was a member of the LaHarpe American Legion Auxiliary and attended the LaHarpe Agape Church and later, the LaHarpe Christian Church.&nbsp;

Survivors include four children: Dale (Jennifer) Link of Hubbard, Oregon, Eva Anders of Abilene, Texas, Darrell Link of Lomax and Ella Joy Hirte of Dallas City; six grandchildren: Jeffrey, Brent, Summer, Michael, Natalie and Colin; nine great-grandchildren with one more on the way and two great-great-grandchildren.&nbsp;

Carl Aloysious Hellweg,&nbsp;82, of Houghton, died Sunday, Sept. 15, 2024, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.

He was born on July 1, 1942, in Houghton, the son of Aloysious and Marie Pomberg Hellweg. On Dec. 1, 1962, he married LaVina Rauenbuehler at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in West Point.

He is survived by his wife of sixty-one years: LaVina; children: Daniel (Amy) Hellweg of Mt. Hamill, Iowa, Carla (Tom) Steffensmeier of West Point, Iowa, Deb (Marty) Moeller of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, Cathy (Scott) Stuecker of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; grandchildren: Blake, Connor, Bailey, Dan, Jenny, Nick, Steven, Mitchell, Makenzie, Ashlyn, Taylor; fifteen great-grandchildren: Ruby, Rose, James, Kathleen, Carly, Teddy, Preston, Leo, Hank, Hazel, Maggie, Layne, Cade, Cael, Drew; siblings: Alvera (Gene) Merschman, Lucille Olson and brother-in-law: Carl (Maryann) Rauenbuehler. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters: Clarice Abolt, Rose Mary Cash and granddaughter-in-law: Lori Steffensmeier.

Carl was a graduate of St. John’s Catholic High School. He was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed farming, puzzle books, watching Westerns, playing and coaching baseball in his younger years and talking about old times. He was an avid Chicago Cubs and Bears fan and loved watching their games. Carl was quick witted and always had a smart comeback.

His body has been entrusted to the crematory of Schmitz Funeral Homes for cremation.

The family will receive friends from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 20, 2024, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Houghton.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 20, 2024, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Houghton with Father Dan Dorau as celebrant.

Burial will be at St. John’s Cemetery in Houghton.

Kenneth James “Jim” Moore,&nbsp;61, of Bonaparte, died Monday, Sept. 16, 2024, at Van Buren County Hospital in Keosauqua.

He was born on May 9, 1963, in Mt. Pleasant, the son of Larry and Mary Ellen Goudie Moore. On Aug.18, 1984, he married Lisa Rider at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Farmington.

Survivors include his wife: Lisa; children: Kate (Luke) Wells of Donnellson, Jake (Stacy) Moore of Keokuk, Paige (Whitney) Moore of Des Moines; grandchildren: Avery and Carson Wells, Camron, Jason and Landon Moore; father: Larry Moore of Bonaparte; mother-in-law: Louise Rider of Farmington; siblings: Mary Jo (Keith) Heitzman of Tampa, Florida, Sharon (Mike) Burek of Winsted, Connecticut, Doug (Angie) Moore of Donnellson. Also surviving are several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his mother: Mary Ellen Moore and father-in-law: Tom Rider.

Jim was a 1981 graduate of Harmony High School. He attended Iowa State University and then returned to the family farm. He finished his career as a partner with his brother Doug at their business, Moore Seed and Service. Jim was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church, Farmington Actioneers, Farmington EMTs, IHSAA as a basketball referee, Lee County Cattleman, Farmington Rod and Gun Club, Atta-Boy Hunt Club. He enjoyed fishing, deer hunting, watching sports, woodworking, playing cards, socializing with friends and most of all, being a grandpa.

A visitation will be held from 12 noon to 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 20, 2024, at Schmitz Funeral Home in Donnellson, where the family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 21, 2024, at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Farmington with Father Dan Dorau as celebrant.

Burial will be at Sharon Cemetery, rural Farmington, Iowa.

A celebration of life will follow at the Houghton Knights of Columbus Rural Life Club.

Kenneth James "Jim" Moore

Connie Sue Brunsell, 77, died Sunday, Sept. 8, 2024, at Wesley Medical Center.&nbsp; She was surrounded by her family.

Connie was born to Elza and Clara Bennett on April 17, 1947, in Burlington.&nbsp; As a young girl, she participated in the Girl Scouts.&nbsp; In the spring of 1965, Connie graduated from Burlington High School.&nbsp; A few years after graduation, on June 22, 1968, Connie married her high school sweetheart, Thomas Brunsell. Together, they would raise their two children as a military family.&nbsp;

Connie enjoyed traveling and was able to share that with her children while the family was stationed in Germany. She took a lot of pride showing her children different parts of the world. She created lasting memories with them that she proudly displayed throughout her home.&nbsp; Despite her love of travel, being home with family to celebrate holidays and special occasions meant the most to Connie.&nbsp;

Though she loved her hometown, Connie made Derby, KS her home in 1984 following her husband’s retirement from the military. In 1985, after years of being a military wife and homemaker, she joined The Boeing Company. She retired as a Senior International Contracts Manager in the fall 2010.

During her retirement, Connie enjoyed spending time with her family and friends.&nbsp; She particularly enjoyed spoiling and cuddling with her dog, Dixie.

Connie is survived by her children, Jim Brunsell and Susan Brunsell, her granddaughters, Logan Neer, Katelyn Neer, and MacKenzie Neer, her great-granddaughters Arya Jo and Robin, and her sister JoAnn Hook (Richard) along with numerous cousins.&nbsp;

Connie was preceded in her passing by her parents, her husband, and her beloved dog, Dixie.&nbsp;

A private service has been planned for Sept. 12, 2024, at Smith Family Mortuary. Connie Sue Brunsell

Robert Wing Eisenhart, 100, of Portland, Ore., died June 3, 2024. He was born Dec. 16, 1923 in Burlington, to Albert Vern and Wilma Wagner Eisenhart.

He married Helen Galvin on Dec. 27, 1942, before he joined the Marines to serve as an aerial navigator in the Pacific during World War II. They had two children together, Ann and Robert Wayne and spent 75 years together before her death in 2018.

After the war, Bob and his young family lived in a Quonset hut while he earned his chemistry degree from Iowa State College in 1948. Almost 40 years later he got a Master's in Environmental Science from State University of Illinois in 1984.

Bob started his career at the Burlington Atomic Energy Commission and Iowa Army Ammunition plant eventually rising to chief chemist. He then went on to positions in Arizona and Wisconsin with titles including pyrotechnic engineer, explosives chemist, and upper atmosphere chemical payload engineer.

His attention switched from fire to water when he became a Resource Planner and Environmental Protection Engineer for the Illinois EPA in Petersburg, IL. He worked at the Illinois EPA until retirement.

Indeed, Bob was passionate about the environment long before it became a widely acknowledged issue of concern. After moving to Illinois, he helped found the first chapter of the Sierra Club in the state. He participated in a field study program, Project Ocean Search, where he was dive buddies with Jean-Michael Cousteau, son of Jacques Cousteau. In his 70s he went on a scientific research expedition to Antarctica. He was an avid traveler throughout his life going to every continent but Australia. He and Helen went on multiple international cruises when they were in their 80s and after her death he traveled to Iceland with his granddaughters in his 90s.

Much of Bob and Helen’s travel was for the 30+ work mission trips they took with United Methodist Volunteers in Mission, including to Alaska and Africa. But Haiti held a truly special place in their hearts and was where they did most of their mission work, building schools and churches and other assistance projects. &nbsp; Bob was active in community life wherever they lived, volunteering for, and often holding office in, community organizations such as school boards, planning and zoning commissions, symphony boards, Boy Scouts, and the US Junior Chamber of Commerce.

Bob was involved in a wide variety of hobbies and volunteer projects over the years. He performed in community theater, did acrobatic horse riding and gymnastics in his youth, and participated in volunteer archaeological digs. He preferred fact to fiction, reading through the encyclopedia at least twice and rarely watching television.&nbsp;

And he always sang in the choir. Singing was a passion for Bob, which drew him to join church and community choirs. A tenor, he was named “Outstanding New Singer” at the International United Methodist church choir in Atlanta. He co-founded the Menard County Singers who sang at the dedication of Lincoln's Presidential Museum in Springfield, IL.&nbsp;&nbsp;

In 2007, Helen and Bob moved to Portland, to be closer to family including their two oldest great-grandchildren, Cecelia and Rowan. They would watch the kids after school, read them books and ply them with ice cream.

Survivors include five grandchildren, Amy Denniston of Washington, DC; Sara (Bill) Eddie of Portland, OR; Eric Eisenhart (Kat Ogaz) of Santa Rosa, CA; Joshua Eisenhart of Sebastopol, CA; Abrie Eisenhart of Kailu-Kona, HI; six great-grandchildren; two nieces, Jill Quakenbush of Washington, IA and Leslie Simon of Glenview, IL; and a nephew Jay Simon of&nbsp; Littleton, CO.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen, his children Ann Galvin-Eisenhart and Robert Wayne Eisenhart and his siblings Wilmer (Bill) Eisenhart and Joan (Jo) Simon.

The Graveside Committal Service for Robert and Helen Eisenhart will be September 21 at 1 p.m. at Aspen Grove Cemetery in Burlington.&nbsp;

Diana LaVon Martin, 63, of Burlington, died Friday, Sept. 13, 2024, at Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born on Jan. 6, 1961, in San Diego, Calif., she was the daughter of Donald and Mary Huges Kaulbars. On Dec. 28, 1980, in San Diego, California, she married Roy Martin.

Diana graduated in 1978 from Point Loma High School in San Diego, Callifornia. She worked for Burlington Community School District for twenty-one years and retired in 2023. Diana was of Christian faith. In her free time, she loved to read a good book, especially Stephen King books. She also enjoyed music, reggae being her favorite genre, and a good drama show. Diana looked forward to enjoying multiple cups of coffee every morning and sharing funny coffee memes. You wouldn’t want to challenge her in a game of trivia because you would not win and if you couldn’t figure out a crossword puzzle, Diana was the person to ask. Most of all Diana loved her family and absolutely adored her grandchildren. She was so very proud of each one of them.

She is survived by her loving husband Roy; six children: Brian (Andrea) Kaulbars, Amber (Jason) Lucas, Kristin (Jason) Kelly, Samantha (James) Davis, Kaci (Billy Bailey) Martin and Gabriel (Ryan Combass) Martin; eight grandchildren: Johnathan, Abigail, Isa Belle, Arianne, Crystallana, Keith, Zoey and Anya; one brother Michael Kaulbas and two sisters: Crystal Kaulbars and Ronda De Marco.

She was preceded in death by her parents; infant son Joshua at birth; in-laws Roy and Elizabeth Martin Sr.

Per her wishes cremation has been accorded and entrusted to the care of Lunning Chapel.

The memorial service for Diana will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 20, 2024 at Lunning Chapel with Pastor Jarid Myers officiating. A one-hour visitation will be held prior to the service where the family will meet with friends.

A memorial has been established in her memory to help with funeral expenses.

She was so very proud of each one of them.She is survived by her loving husband Roy; six children: Brian (Andrea) Kaulbars, Amber (Jason) Lucas, Kristin (Jason) Kelly, Samantha (James) Davis, Kaci (Billy Bailey) Martin and Gabriel (Ryan Combass) Martin; eight grandchildren: Johnathan, Abigail, Isa Belle, Arianne, Crystallana, Keith, Zoey and Anya; one brother Michael Kaulbas and two sisters: Crystal Kaulbars and Ronda De Marco.She was preceded in death by her parents; infant son Joshua at birth; in-laws Roy and Elizabeth Martin Sr.Per her wishes cremation has been accorded and entrusted to the care of Lunning Chapel.The memorial service for Diana will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 20, 2024 at Lunning Chapel with Pastor Jarid Myers officiating. A one-hour visitation will be held prior to the service where the family will meet with friends.A memorial has been established in her memory to help with funeral expenses.

Ralph Edward “Ed” Whitmore, died Sept. 14, 2024. Born Sept. 22, 2024, in Colin, Iowa, he was son of Ralph Burdette Whitmore and Frances Virginia Cain.

Ed’s family moved to the outskirts of Denver, Colorado in 1941, when his father worked on B29 bombers during World War II. Ed attended a country school his first and second year, attending public school in Arvada beginning in the third grade. In 1947 they moved back to Coin, Iowa.

Ed completed his lower education at Coin Consolidated High School, graduating president of his class in 1956.

The following year he attended Nebraska State Teachers College with the intention of transferring to Iowa State after his first year.

Ed and his future wife Patricia Ann “Pat” Barker met in 1959, while they both attended Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa. They married on April 14, 1960.

Graduating from Iowa State University with a degree in Forest Management in the summer of 1961, he accepted a position as a Forester with the United States Forest Service on the Olympic National Forest at Forks, Washington.

Daughter Catherine Lorelle Whitmore born Oct. 18, 1961.

Son Steven Edward Whitmore born Oct. 8, 1964.

In 1966, Ed and family moved to Quinault, Washington, where he was promoted to head of Timber Sales Preparation. After two years, he was promoted again and transferred to the Willamette National Forest in Detroit, Oregon, in charge of Resource Management. An avid outdoorsman, he spent his spare time fishing and taking his family hiking and backpacking.

The summer of 1972, Ed was selected to lead a team that developed a management plan for the newly created Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area on the Siuslaw National Forest in Reedsport, Oregon.

In the spring of 1975, he was promoted again to District Ranger on the Tieton Ranger District of Wenatchee National Forest, near Naches, Washington. This was very diverse district which included a wilderness area and a ski area on approximately 120,000 acres of National Forest land. These two areas had no formal management plan, so Ed’s assignment was to create and implement a multiple use land management plan, as well manage the efforts of 200 subordinates. Always looking to expand family outdoor activities, here they took up downhill skiing, cycling, running, camping, bird hunting and took their hiking to a new level, regularly logging 300+ miles in a summer. All this rating culminated in the ascent of Mount Rainer, the highest mountain in the Pacific Northwest.

1979 he was transferred to District Ranger at Estacada, Oregon on the Mt Hood National Forest. Here he developed a management plan for the new created Mt Jefferson Wilderness Area.

While here, his kids Cathy and Steve were finishing high school. The school failed to secure funding for its budget and was forced to close for over a month. Ed ran for the school board and quickly became president of the board. He was able to get the school reopened quickly and was widely hailed for his open/honest communication and his ability to listen to the public.

Ed also became a member of the Portland Wheelman, he and Pat regularly participated in club bicycle rides. They eventually purchased a custom tandem bicycle and became very skilled at riding together, often outpacing some of the best single riders. Their best single day effort stands 250 miles.

Promoted again in 1982, Ed was put in charge of Timber Management on the 1.32-million-acre Gifford Pinchot National Forest, necessitating a move to Vancouver, Washington.

In August of 1987, he was promoted and transferred to the Washington, DC Office of the United States Forest Service as Director of Timber Sales nationally. Here Ed and Pat enjoyed all the museums and monuments D.C. has to offer, with the added benefit of being close to Pat’s family.

In spring of 1991 he transferred to San Francisco, California as head of Timber Management for Region Five (California and Hawaii). Ed spent significant time filling in as Deputy Regional Forester before retiring. He was also sent as a delegate to the World Forestry Congress in Paris, France. Pat joined him on the Post Congress Tour in the French Alps, where he gave a speech to hundreds of foresters from around the world.

Settled in Vallejo, California, one of their first visits to Community Presbyterian Church happened to be Father’s Day and there was a luncheon put on by the women of the church. The Minister asked them to join him at a table and asked Ed what were the top two things he always wanted to do. Ed said “that is easy”, I want to learn to play the bagpipes and paint with water colors. The minister said “well, not sure about painting with water colors but we have three bagpipers here in the church” and he pointed them out. That afternoon Ed met with them and he was on his way. He bought Great Highland Pipes from Scotland and piped for over 20 years, until 2015 when side effects of cancer treatment prevented him from playing.

Retiring in 1995 Ed and Pat started a small business, operated out of their home in Vallejo. In 2004 they were looking for a change of pace and decided to move back to Iowa. After touring many towns, they decided on Burlington. Once established in Burlington, Ed was asked to be the manager of Footnotes Bookstore at the local library. A wonderful fit considering Ed’s love of books and history. Always a volunteer, he did this for seven years and became quite a reliable resource for many of Burlington’s citizens.

Retirement also gave him time to pursue many of his other interests, which included, painting with water colors, volunteering at the First Presbyterian Church, singing in the choir and international travel. He never said no to a new adventure, traveling to over 25 countries, from the Middle East to Europe and Southeast Asia. Ed and Pat also enjoyed touring the country in their RV, often taking their grandkids out on epic adventures.
