Brenda A. O'Brien, 49, of Burlington, died Wednesday, Dec. 1, 2021, at her home in Burlington.

Born June 8, 1972, in Warner Robbins, Ga., she was the daughter of 
Larry and Song Kim Richardson. She was previously married to Eric 
O'Brien and after their separation, she was later engaged to Dalton 
Bird.

She worked previously as a CNA at The Kensington in Fort Madison.

Survivors include her parents; children, Emily O'Brien and Matthew O'Brien, both of Burlington; fiancé, Dalton Bird of 
Burlington; sister, Judy Gardner of Panama City, Fla.; and brother, 
Paul Richardson of Burlington. Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh Crematory.

Otto Karl Trousil, 95, of West Burlington died Nov. 29, 2021, at Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center Hospice House in West Burlington. He was born Jan. 1, 1926, to Leopold and Angelika Trousil, German Nationals in Lisnice, former Czechoslovakia. On Oct. 12, 1951, he married Wilfriede Fromm in Rodheim, West Germany. She preceded him in death. Otto attended school in Olomouc until the age of 14, whereupon he entered an apprenticeship to learn all aspects of aeronautics and building airplanes. As with all German youth during WWII, it was mandatory to join a two-year work program. At the age of 18 he was required to join a service, so he joined the Luftwaffe and trained on motorized aircraft, later being assigned to an engineering battalion in France. He surrendered in the latter days of the war to American forces who then turned him over to French forces; he was kept as a POW for 18 months. With the help of the Red Cross, he was reunited with his parents and siblings. He then started a 17-year career working for Lufthansa as a mechanic and participated in 1949 in the Berlin airlift, flying provisions into West Berlin due to the Soviet Union's blockade of the city. In 1964, the family immigrated to the United States, first living in Rockford, Ill., and then moving to West Burlington in 1967 after taking a job with Import Motors until his retirement in 1989. He is survived by his son, Hans Trousil and daughter, Antje Johns, both of West Burlington; three grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. There will be a memorial service at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 16 at Lunning Chapel with family receiving friends beginning at 9 a.m. Inurnment will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery in West Burlington following services. Cremation has been accorded and entrusted to the care of Lunning Chapel.

James David Myers, 55, of Burlington died Friday, Nov. 26, 2021.

Jim was born to Norman “Duke” Myers and Anita Beine Myers on Jan. 1, 1966. After graduating from Burlington High School in 1984, he played college basketball at Wayne State in Nebraska, Southeastern Community College, and William Penn College where he graduated in 1988.&nbsp; He enlisted in the United States Navy in 1989 and served aboard the USS Cayuga during Desert Shield.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Jim coached at several area schools, including Keokuk Cardinal Stritch, Notre Dame, BHS, and SCC. He became the head coach for the girls’ basketball program at Notre Dame in 2014. He was selected as the Iowa Girls’ Basketball Coaches Association class 4A District Coach of the Year in 2005 while coaching at BHS and was selected again in 2016 as the 1A District Coach of the Year while coaching at Notre Dame.&nbsp; He coached the Notre Dame Nikes in the state tournament for five years in a row, four of those as head coach.

He began his professional career at Young House Family Services where he started ACT Day Treatment and he worked at Burlington High School on the administrative team. He worked in the private industry for RMGD, Physical Therapy Works, and Brockway Mechanical and Roofing before retiring in March of 2021.

Jim volunteered for the American Little League Board, was a coach for Little League, and officiated basketball games and flag football games for the Y.&nbsp; He started the Southeast Iowa Suns basketball team which led to multiple girls’ and boys’ teams at all levels.&nbsp; He coached for Team Iowa, an AAU team out of Cedar Rapids, and held a variety of skills camps for youth throughout southeast Iowa and west central Illinois. He and his wife served as host parents for players on the SCC basketball team during the early 2000s. He announced the BHS football games and the SCC men’s basketball games on KBUR prior to his diagnosis.&nbsp; He recently served on the advisory board for the construction&nbsp; trades department at Southeastern Community College and Southwestern Community College. In September, he was honored for his service to the Associated Builders and Contractors of Iowa Apprenticeship and Training Trust.

Coach Myers is survived by his wife, Monica Mathews Myers; his daughters, Marissa Riffel of Mediapolis, Morgan Myers of Wilson, N.C., and Johanna Myers of Burlington; seven siblings, Michelle Schulte of Burlington, Christine Smith of Keokuk, Joseph Myers, Maureen Behne, Laura Myers, Veronica Royer, all of Burlington, and John Myers of Perth, Australia; and two granddaughters.&nbsp;

Visitation will be held at Prugh-Thielen Funeral Home on Thursday, Dec. 2 where the family will receive friends from 5 to 7:30 p.m. The Rosary will be recited at 4 p.m.&nbsp; Funeral Mass of the Resurrection will be held Friday, Dec. 3 at St. John’s Catholic Church at 11 a.m. Graveside committal will occur in Aspen Grove Cemetery following the service. Born Dec. 5, 1954, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Franklin "Wacky" and Katherine "Kotzy" Hoschek Jay. On June 22, 1974, she married Kenneth Dale Westlake at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Burlington. He died on July 11, 1990. On January 29, 2001, she married G. Ed Mason at the Great River Klein Center.&nbsp;

She was a 1973 graduate of Burlington High School, and attended SCC to get certificates in both their culinary program and their recreation program.

She was the recreation director at the Great River Klein Center.

She was a member of Triker's of the Third Wheel, The American Legion, several card clubs, The Eagles Club, and Hamilton-Walters Marine Corps League.&nbsp;

Survivors include her second husband; one daughter, Heidi Sue Westlake of Burlington; one son, K. Kirk Westlake of Florida; three siblings, Kathy Jay of Wever, John E. Jay of Burlington, and Julie Luttenegger of Burlington; and three grandchildren.

Born Sept. 17, 1940, in Washington, he was the son of Maynard, F. “Mike” and Doreen Fairlie Mincer. Larry was raised by his grandparents, Ralph and Dorothy Fairlie.

On Sept. 3, 1960, Larry married Mary Kay Montgomery in Fort Madison..

Larry was a graduate of Sigourney Iowa High School. He was in law enforcement for nine and a half years. He drove trucks for the next 30 years, retiring April 1, 2006.

He was a member of Divine Mercy Parish, the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 150, and Knights of Columbus.

Survivors include his wife; daughter, Susan Marshall of Ankeny; son, Bobby Mincer of Burlington; sister, Janet Higdon of Fort Madison; and five grandchildren.

The memorial service for Larry Mincer will be Thursday, Dec. 2 at 11 a.m. at Lunning Chapel with Fr. James Flattery and Fr. Patrick Hilgendorf officiating. The family will receive friends from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service. There will be a private family inurnment at Sacred Heart Cemetery.

Michael married Rebecca “Becky” Boekeloo on April 4, 1992, in Clinton. Michael was a graduate of Northeast High School in Goose Lake. He served in the Army during Desert Storm from 1989-1993. He was a heavy equipment mechanic for 32 years starting at H&amp;L Mack, worked at Batey Sawmill for 20 years, then returned to H&amp;L Mack. Michael was of the Christian faith. Born July 12, 1924, in rural Mediapolis, she was the daughter of Charles Benjamin &amp; Martha Elizabeth Glenn Bailey. On Oct. 13, 1950, Dorothy married Carl Buhmeyer in St. Charles, Mo. He died April 2, 1970. Dorothy graduated from Huron High School in 1941 and attended the College of Commerce Burlington Business School. For over 40 years, she was the secretary for St John’s Catholic Church and Sacred Heart Cemetery. She was a member of Divine Mercy Parish and sang in the church choir. Dorothy volunteered with Birthright, St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry, and sang with Bel Canto. Survivors include son, Charles Buhmeyer of Burlington; daughter, Beth Brown of Burlington; sister, Mary Ann Frank of Burlington; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

There will be a Rosary beginning at 4:30 p.m. with family visitation from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 26 at Lunning Chapel. Mass of Christian burial will be at St. John’s Catholic Church on Saturday, Nov. 27 at 1:00 p.m. Father James Flattery will officiate. Kathryn W. Klaus, 75, of Burlington, died Wednesday, Nov. 24, 2021 at The Madison in Fort Madison.

Born Sept. 17, 1946, in Fairfield, she was the daughter of Eryl and Edith Gingles VanDyke.

Kathryn married Tom Crossett in June 1964. They later divorced. She married David Klaus on June 25, 1995, in Denver, Colo.

She was a graduate of Columbus Junction High School in 1964 and was a graduate of Dayton School of Hair Design in Burlington. Kathryn was a self-employed cosmetologist for 10 years, retiring in 2011.

Survivors include her husband; daughters, Julia Phelps of Houston, Texas, and Amanda Smith of Burlington; stepson, David Klaus of Burlington; brother, George VanDyke of Nichols; half sister, Shirley Reynolds of Cedar Rapids; 10 grandchildren; and 18 great grandchildren. According to her wishes, Kathryn’s body has been deeded to the University of Iowa for medical research.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Richard Mellinger, 90, of Burlington, died Wednesday, Nov. 17, 2021, at Heritage Nursing and Rehab in Cedar Rapids.

Born Oct. 3, 1931, in Burlington, he was the son of Fred William and Sophia Elizabeth Stoller Mellinger. He graduated from Burlington Community High School in 1949.&nbsp; On May 29, 1955, he married JoAnn McQueen in Burlington. JoAnn died November 12, 2005.

Richard served in the United States Army and was stationed in Germany during the Korean war.

His first job was at Sweetheart Bakery in Burlington. Richard later became a life insurance salesman and financial planner for Minnesota Mutual/Minnesota Life.

He was a member of First Christian Church, American Legion, and a volunteer with the Senior Citizen Group. Richard was very involved with the Burlington Community School District, was the first president of the Burlington High School Athletic Booster Club, and loved announcing for football, wrestling, track, softball, and baseball. Richard was very proud to have the BHS wrestling tournament named after him.

Survivors include his four children, Becky Koehler of Burlington, Robin Mellinger of Hills, Rick Mellinger of Burlington, and Steve Mellinger of Brunswick, Ga.; 12 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Loretta Dixon of The Villages, Fla., and Marjorie Roth of Waukee.

Visitation will be from noon until 7 p.m. with the family to receive friends from 4 until 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 22 at Prugh-Thielen Funeral Home.

Vickie worked as a housekeeper for Great River Medical Center for 16 years; prior to that she was a bartender for many years.

Warren Gustav Hohmbraker, 94, of Sperry, died Wednesday, Nov.17, 2021, at Prairie Ridge Care and Rehabilitation in Mediapolis.

Born May 18, 1927, at his family's homestead outside of Sperry, he was the son of William G. and Alma Young Hohmbraker. He married Maxine Myers and they later divorced. On May 27, 1954, he married Mary Louise Vollmer in Mediapolis. She later passed Dec. 25, 2020.

Warren was a lifelong farmer. He started working on his family's farm after he finished eighth grade at Piney Wood County School.

He went to the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Mediapolis and later attended Kingston Methodist Church. He was a member of the American Farm Bureau Federation, American Hereford Association, Mississippi Valley Morgan Horse Club, Hawkeye Morgan Horse Club, and Louisa County Saddle Club. Survivors include his daughter, Marvalene Cousins of Burlington; one son, Kenneth Hohmbraker of Danville; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be at 10 until 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov.23 at Prugh-Thielen Funeral Home.

Rosel McCandless Smith, 93, of Mediapolis, died Monday, Nov. 15, 2021, at the Azria Health Care Center in Mediapolis.

Born September 16, 1928, in Bieber, West Germany, she was the daughter of Kilian Willibald and Theresia&nbsp; Schrodt Kohl. She married John J. McCandless in Offenbach, am Main Germany at Castle Offenbach. They later divorced. She then married Kenneth Smith; he died September 8,1990.

She completed general schooling and trade school in Bieber, and Offenbach am Main, West Germany. She became a U.S. citizen and brought her parents to the United States.

Rosel also had a love for business, sales, and fashion, so that was the path she chose after trade school.&nbsp;

She was a past officer of the Women of the Moose and the International Friendship Club.&nbsp;

She attended Zion United Church of Christ for many years, but came to New Life Family Church through being chosen by their youth group.&nbsp;

Survivors include her children, Marika Nunnikoven and John McCandless; five grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 5 until 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 22 at New Life Family Church, where the family will receive friends.

She then married Kenneth Smith; he died September 8,1990.She completed general schooling and trade school in Bieber, and Offenbach am Main, West Germany. She became a U.S. citizen and brought her parents to the United States.Rosel also had a love for business, sales, and fashion, so that was the path she chose after trade school.&nbsp;She was a past officer of the Women of the Moose and the International Friendship Club.&nbsp;She attended Zion United Church of Christ for many years, but came to New Life Family Church through being chosen by their youth group.&nbsp;Survivors include her children, Marika Nunnikoven and John McCandless; five grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.Visitation will be from 5 until 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 22 at New Life Family Church, where the family will receive friends.The funeral service for Mrs. Smith will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 23 at New Life Family Church with Pastor Richard Dutzer officiating.&nbsp; Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.&nbsp;

Beverly May Smith, 87, of Burlington, died on Wednesday, Nov.17, 2021, at Ridgeview Assisted Living in Burlington.

Born May 10, 1934, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Rudolph Oscar and Ida Mae Rose Fehse Lucas. On March 14, 1954, she married Ralph Leslie Smith in St. John's Church of Flint River Township. He passed away on May 3, 2014.

Beverly was a payroll clerk/bookkeeper for Simpson Security Papers in Burlington.

She was a member of St. John's Church of Flint River Township.&nbsp;

Survivors include her children, Anthony L. Chris Smith of Mountain View, Wyo., June L. Morgan of Burlington, Rosemary I. Blint of Fort Madison; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and one brother, LaVerne R. Lucas of Burlington.

The memorial service for Beverly will be 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov.21, at Prugh-Thielen Funeral Home with Pastor Wally Reynolds officiating. Family will greet friends prior to the funeral service.

Larry Augustine, 77, of Wever, died Tuesday, Nov. 16, 2021, at his home in Wever.

Born Sept. 28, 1944, in Burlington, he was the son of Paul Eugene and Gertrude Martha Mehaffy Augustine. On July 13,1963, he married Wanda Lee Chesnut. She passed away on January 20, 2002.

Survivors include his two sons, Todd Augustine and Dale Augustine, both of Wever; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one brother, Randy Augustine of Wever; and two sisters, Paula Hobbs of Danville and Lois Shipley of Burlington.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date and burial will be at Aspen Grove Cemetery.
