James William Riffel, 72, of Burlington, died Thursday, March 9, 2023, at the University of Iowa Hospitals &amp; Clinics in Iowa City.

Born April 24, 1950, in Burlington, he was the son of Joseph P. and Eileen Hanrahan Riffel. On July 29, 2006, he married Teresa Carden in Burlington.&nbsp;

Jim graduated from Notre Dame High School in 1968. He went to SCC, then the University of Iowa where he received his BA degree in Business.&nbsp;

Jim worked at Winegard Company as a director of sales for over 40 years.&nbsp;

Jim was a member of Divine Mercy Parish- SS. Mary and Patrick Catholic Church in West Burlington. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, and hunting. He went to many Ducks Unlimited events. Jim was a big sports fan. His favorite teams were the Iowa Hawkeyes, Green Bay Packers, and the St. Louis Cardinals. Jim was very ornery and loved spending time with his friends and family.

Survivors include wife, Teresa Riffel of Burlington; daughter, Amy Riffel of Denver, Colo.; son, Easton Williams of Taylor Ridge, Ill.; grandpuppy, Waylon; his sister, Teresa Bence of West Burlington and her family, Bob (Melissa) Bence and their children; Corey and Codey Jacobs and Ben (Lisa) Bence and their children; Abbey and Garret Bence. His sister, Mary Jo (Tom) Fisher of Estelline, S.D. and their family, Jake (Maurin) Fisher and their children; Ava, Josie and TJ Fisher and Jill (Kirk) Hinrich and their children; Kenzie, Kyla, Kinley, and Kolton.&nbsp;

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother-in-law, Bill Bence, and several cousins.&nbsp;

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh Crematory.

Visitation will be from noon to 7 p.m. with the family to receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, March 16, 2023, at Prugh Funeral Service, 3940 Division Street.

Shirley Marilyn Hester, 86, of Burlington, died Sunday, March 5, 2023, at Oakview Nursing Home.

Born Aug. 21, 1936, she was the daughter of Arthur Melvin and Meta Catherine (Wiele) Miller.

On Sept. 27, 1952, she married Raymond W. Hester in Burlington.

Shirley was a Home Health Aid and worked for Midwest Biscuit. She enjoyed going south in the winter and spending a lot of time on their pontoon boat on the Mississippi River.

Survivors include her husband, Raymond; six children, Debra Sue Schwenker of Burlington, Daniel Hester of Cedar Rapids, Denise Anderson of West Point, Dennis and Derek Hester both of Burlington, and Devin Hester of Danville; several grandchildren; one sister, Carol Miller; and two brothers, Donnie and Arthur Miller.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

A graveside service for Shirley will be held at a later date in Aspen Grove Cemetery.

Connie Christofferson, 77, of West Burlington, died Friday, March 3, 2023, at her home.

Born July 21, 1945, in Monmouth, Ill., she was the daughter of James Willis and Mildred Beatrice (Yeager) Romine Sr.

Connie graduated from Monmouth High School in 1963. On May 3, 1975, she married Otto “Ed” Christofferson JR. in Oquawka, Ill. He died Nov. 23, 1998.

Connie was a sorter for Sterzing’s Potato Chips in Burlington. She enjoyed volunteer work at Tolson’s Community Action in Mt. Pleasant. She was honored as Volunteer of the Year for State of Iowa for her volunteer work and was recognized by Governor Terry Branstad. Connie was of the Presbyterian Faith. She liked to go camping, work crossword puzzles, watch the weather channel, and listen to the family music tapes. Connie always gave to others first and she loved her family dearly.

Survivors include her children Kathy Jo Reynolds of Kirkwood, Ill., Roy Emery Bundy of Cedar Rapids, Stanley Earl Christofferson of Burlington, Scott Edward Christofferson of Mt. Union, Otto Edward Christofferson III of Burlington, Ernest Lee Christofferson of Burlington and DaFawn Orduno of Burlington; numerous grandchildren, many great-grandchildren; brother James Willis Romine Jr of Davenport, and significant other John D. Porter of West Burlington.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two brothers Jerry Romine and Ronnie Romine; four sisters Sheryl Lucas, Carole Stein, Pam Lehmann, and Nancy Wicks.

Richard D. Miller, 73, of West Burlington, died Tuesday, February 28, 2023, at Danville Care Center.

Born September 14, 1949, in Burlington, he was the son of Carl E. and Pauline E. Hanger Miller.

Richard graduated with the class of 1968 from Danville High School. He attended two years at Southeastern Community College and attended Northwest Missouri State University.

He served his country in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam conflict where he was stationed at Norton Air Force Base in San Bernadino, Calif.

Richard married Deborah Lynne “Debbie” Massey on March 11, 1983, in Burlington. She died Oct. 12, 2006.

Richard worked for H &amp; L Mack in Mediapolis as a parts specialist for 32 years. He was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church where he sang in the choir. He sang with the Silver Singers and toured with the Shoquoquon choir to Puerto Rico. He was past Exalted Ruler of Burlington Elks Lodge #84 and was a member for many years. Richard was an avid sportsman. He enjoyed shooting, fishing, and hunting. He was a fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Chicago Cubs.

Survivors include three daughters Jamie (Shawn) Adam of Burlington, Mandy (Rob) Wilkerson of West Burlington, and Megan (Ethan) Meigs of San Leandro, Calif.; six grandchildren Cody, Hunter, Parker, Dallas, Jaelyn, and Kayden; two great-grandchildren Drake and Amiyah; three brothers David Miller of West Burlington, Timothy (Debra) Miller of Humbolt and Paul (Sally) Miller of West Burlington.

He was preceded in death by his parents and wife Debbie.

Merlin Jon Van Zee, 45, of Danville, passed away Thursday, March 2, 2023, in Pella after he lost his battle with depression and mental illness.&nbsp;

Born Oct. 3, 1977, in Pella, he was the son of Arvan and Betty Fopma Van Zee. On Dec. 12, 2007, he married Magon Burr in St. Thomas, V.I.&nbsp;

Merlin graduated from Pella Christian High School in 1996. After high school, he attended Iowa State University where he completed his undergraduate studies in 3 years and was early accepted to the school of veterinary medicine. He graduated in 2003 with his DVM (Doctor of Veterinary Medicine) with distinction. The Dean of his program said he'd never seen a brighter student.&nbsp;

Following graduation, Merlin began working for Summer Street Animal Clinic as a veterinarian and co-owner. He strived to make the clinic feel like a home and thought of his coworkers as family. He attended many seminars and continuing education, allowing him to be self-taught in more advanced orthopedic procedures. Over the 20 years he spent as co-owner, he was able to use his expertise to grow the clinic into an invaluable asset to the community.

Merlin was a member of Crossroads Community Church, where he and his wife were youth group leaders for over 10 years. He taught biology classes for Great River Christian School and volunteered with Hetta Gilbert by helping move and deliver furniture to those in need. Merlin had a unique chuckle and was known for his "dad jokes". He made everyone feel so special. He genuinely wanted to know how people were and would pray for them and with them. He loved the outdoors, going fishing locally and in Canada, camping with his family, and trap shooting. Merlin could be found tinkering in his shop or fixing something that was broken. These were skills he learned from watching his father over the years. He also enjoyed woodworking and liked the challenge of creating Magon's "ideas." Merlin loved planning trips from start to finish. Whether driving up to visit his parents and sister, spending time with his nieces and nephew, traveling with family, or taking adventurous trips with friends, he loved to plan fun experiences for everyone to enjoy. His love for his children was evident in how he spent as much time as he could snuggling Amos, bringing Meadow along as his personal assistant for after-hours calls, and enjoying Iowa State sporting events with Ty.&nbsp;

As we grieve this unspeakable loss, we find peace in the fact that Merlin was a believer. He strongly believed God's Word is the ultimate authority. Scripture teaches us that all who place their hope and faith in the person and work of Jesus Christ are eternally secure. The only sin that condemns a person to eternal suffering in hell is the rejection of Christ. We take great comfort in knowing that Merlin is with the Lord. Merlin was a child of God, loving husband and father, amazing son, loyal brother, outstanding uncle, and a cherished friend to many.&nbsp;

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Charles and Kathleen (Nikkel) Fopma, Alvin and Minnie (Wassink) Van Zee; and aunt, Margery DeGraaf.&nbsp;

Merlin Jon Van Zee

John Richard McPherson, 72, of Burlington, died Sunday, March 5, 2023, at his home in Burlington.

Born June 9, 1950, in Keokuk, he was the son of George Montgomery and Bessie Lucille Phillips McPherson. On December 26, 1970, he married Kathie Sue Clark at the Gorin Baptist Church in Gorin, Mo.&nbsp;

John attended Memphis High School in Memphis, Mo. and graduated in 1968. Afterward, he attended Southeastern Community College.

He worked for CNHi (JI Case) as an expert operator of construction equipment for 46 years before retiring.&nbsp;

He was a U.S. Air Force Veteran, serving from February 11, 1970, until February 8, 1974.

John was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. He was a very hard worker. John enjoyed watching football and baseball, especially the Kansas City Chiefs and the St. Louis Cardinals. He enjoyed watching westerns such as Gunsmoke and other old westerns. John loved spending time with his children and grandkids and never missed any of their activities.&nbsp;

Survivors include his wife, Kathie Sue McPherson of Burlington; son, Doug (Michelle) McPherson of Sperry; daughter, Kimberly (Tony) Madden of Kansas City, Mo.; four grandchildren, Conner and Taylor Brakeville, Riley and Andrew McPherson; three siblings, Bob (Dorothy) Hunolt of Rutledge, MO, Faye (Ronnie) Walker of Fort Madison and George (Becky) McPherson, Jr. of Tucson, Ariz.; mother-in-law, Dorothy Clark of Rutledge, Mo.; two brother-in-laws, Les Clark and Larry Clark; sister-in-law, Kim Clark and several nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Bill McPherson.&nbsp;

 </figure>John Richard McPherson, 72, of Burlington, died Sunday, March 5, 2023, at his home in Burlington.Born June 9, 1950, in Keokuk, he was the son of George Montgomery and Bessie Lucille Phillips McPherson. On December 26, 1970, he married Kathie Sue Clark at the Gorin Baptist Church in Gorin, Mo.&nbsp;John attended Memphis High School in Memphis, Mo. and graduated in 1968. Afterward, he attended Southeastern Community College.He worked for CNHi (JI Case) as an expert operator of construction equipment for 46 years before retiring.&nbsp;He was a U.S. Air Force Veteran, serving from February 11, 1970, until February 8, 1974.John was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. He was a very hard worker. John enjoyed watching football and baseball, especially the Kansas City Chiefs and the St. Louis Cardinals. He enjoyed watching westerns such as Gunsmoke and other old westerns. John loved spending time with his children and grandkids and never missed any of their activities.&nbsp;Survivors include his wife, Kathie Sue McPherson of Burlington; son, Doug (Michelle) McPherson of Sperry; daughter, Kimberly (Tony) Madden of Kansas City, Mo.; four grandchildren, Conner and Taylor Brakeville, Riley and Andrew McPherson; three siblings, Bob (Dorothy) Hunolt of Rutledge, MO, Faye (Ronnie) Walker of Fort Madison and George (Becky) McPherson, Jr. of Tucson, Ariz.; mother-in-law, Dorothy Clark of Rutledge, Mo.; two brother-in-laws, Les Clark and Larry Clark; sister-in-law, Kim Clark and several nieces and nephews.Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Bill McPherson.&nbsp;Visitation will be from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, March 11, 2023, at Prugh Funeral Service, 3940 Division Street.The funeral service for Mr. McPherson will be 2 p.m. Saturday, March 11, 2023, at Prugh Funeral Service, 3940 Division Street with Pastor Mark Bell officiating. Dawn Marie Bennink, 55, of Burlington, died Sunday, March 5, 2023, at Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in West Burlington.

Born April 1, 1967, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Dean and Betty Standard Weinreich. On December 29, 1989, she married James Michael Bennink. They later divorced.

Dawn was of the Christian faith. She worked for headstart and bartended at several places.

Dawn was a people person who was friends with everyone and had a huge heart. She was an avid collector of all things, especially rocks, and loved the color green.

Survivors include two sons, James Michael (Samantha) Weinreich of Burlington, and Jordan Matthew (Des) Bennink of Crest Hill, Ill.; three step-children, Brie and Andrew Bennink and Tabitha Rechers; two grandchildren, Sydney and Jace; parents Dean and Betty Weinreich of Lomax, Ill.; one sister, Dana Crews; one niece, Marissa Crews; and one great niece, Lennon Crews.

She was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents; her husband James Bennink; her father-in-law Ivan Bennink and her dog, Hope.

The memorial funeral service for Ms. Bennink will be held at 2:30 p.m. March 9, 2023, at Lunning Chapel with Pastor Dan Baker officiating. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2:30 p.m.

Cremation has been accorded to Lunning Chapel.

Carol Jeanne Hippe, 90, died Saturday, Jan. 21, 2023. She was born in Richmond, Ind., on May 5, 1932, to Raymond Elbert and Lenora Ione Watkins Belcher.

Thomas Alan Carr, 46 Years, of Phelan, Calif. died Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2023.

Born Feb. 2, 1977, in West Covina, Calif., he was the son of Danny Edward and Shirley Ann Gillette Carr.&nbsp;

Thomas was a member of Set Free Ministries in Phelan, Calif. He enjoyed collecting DVDs, watching movies, and loved animals, mostly dogs. He was very social and enjoyed hanging out with his friends.&nbsp;

Survivors include his mother, Shirley Ann Carr of Wapello; three siblings, Danny Carr of Burlington, Stephanie Carr of Sacramento, Calif., and Bobby Carr of West Burlington, and many nieces and nephews.

Besides his father, he was preceded in death by his maternal and paternal grandparents.&nbsp;

Thomas Alan Carr

&nbsp;Theresa K. Hass, 94, of Burlington died Friday, Feb. 24, 2023, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Klein Center in West Burlington.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Theresa was born on April 22, 1928, in Stanwood, the daughter of Matthew Robert &amp; May Belle Lerch Aldrich. At the age of 3 years old, she and her family moved to a farm in Clarence.&nbsp; While in the eighth grade, she moved to Cedar Rapids.&nbsp; She graduated from Immaculate Conception High School and graduated from Mt. Mercy College in 1948, with a degree in nursing.&nbsp; Theresa was united in marriage to Burnell G. Hass on July 12, 1948, at Immaculate Conception Church in Cedar Rapids. Theresa and Burnell moved to Carroll, and later to St Louis, while Burnell was in Mortuary Science College.  He preceded her in death on Nov. 8, 2003.&nbsp;

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;In 1984, they founded the Hass Funeral Home in Burlington. She worked there until Burnell died in 2003. She was a member of the Divine Mercy Parish-SS. John &amp; Paul Catholic Church, of Burlington, the American Business Women’s Association, Women of the Moose, VFW Auxiliary, Legion of Mary, and the Knights of Columbus Auxiliary. Theresa enjoyed music, especially country western, most especially spending time with her family and church friends.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;She is survived by her children, Kathy A. Hass of Burlington, Michael B. (Peg) Hass of Ankeny, Kevin M. (Joyce) Hass of Runnells and Maleia M. Thielen, four grandchildren, Adam Thielen, Lori Haigh, Amanda Hass, and Matthew Hass, seven great-grandchildren along with several nieces and nephews.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Theresa was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Burnell, and her brother, Donald Aldrich.

Stanley P. Wolkenhauer, 85, of Burlington, died Saturday, Feb. 25, 2023, at his home.

Born Oct. 26, 1937, in Burlington, Iowa, he was the son of Paul M. and Mary E. Stewart Wolkenhauer. He was a 1955 graduate of Burlington High School.

He married Ida Mae Johnson on Aug. 8, 1969, in Biggsville, Ill. They later divorced. He then married Sally Schwerin in 1980. They later divorced.

Stanley worked as a welder for J.I. Case for 34 years until his retirement in 1992. He farmed for 20 years South of Burlington. After his retirement, he worked for Blackhawk Freight for 10 years.

He served with the Army Reserves and was called into active service during the Bay of Pigs. He was baptized at Spring Grove Methodist Church and was a past member of the Eagles, Moose, AARP, American Legion, VFW, and Farm Bureau and was a member of UAW #807.

He enjoyed baseball, most outdoor sports, hunting, and being outside in nature and on the farm. He was a Green Bay Packer, St. Louis Cardinals, and Iowa Hawkeyes fan and enjoyed being with his friends.

Survivors include his daughter, Cynthia (Steve) Wirt of Mediapolis; one granddaughter Michelle Gerst; two great-granddaughters, Maddie Gerst and Kaylie Gerst; two brothers, Carl (Mary) Wolkenhauer of Friendswood, Tex., and Jerry Wolkenhauer of Burlington; three sisters, Sharon Huston and Joyce (Jim) Gosney both of Burlington and Mary Hoke of Overland Park, Kan., and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral service for Mr. Wolkenhauer will be 10 a.m. Saturday, March 4 at Lunning Chapel. The Rev. Tammy Wirt will officiate. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the funeral service. The Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard will conduct military rites.

According to his wishes, cremation will occur following the funeral service, and has been entrusted to the care of Lunning Chapel.

Inurnment will be held at Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery at a later date.

MarScine Robinson Knotts Brown, 88, of Burlington, died Sunday, Feb. 26, 2023, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in West Burlington.

Born March 18, 1934, in Keokuk, she was the daughter of George Leonard and Mary Agnes South Robinson. MarScine married Russell Albert Knotts on April 6, 1956, in Keokuk, Iowa. He died Nov. 11, 1962. On Oct. 23, 1976, she married Frederick Morris Brown. He died March 22, 1998.&nbsp;

MarScine worked for Winegard before working at the Social Security Office and Job Service (Workforce).

She was a member of Second Baptist Church in Fort Madison, Iowa. She was the past vice president and president of the NAACP. She enjoyed politics, watching westerns, and loved spending time with her children and grandchildren.&nbsp;

Survivors include two sons, Kevin (Julie) Knotts of Holland, Mich. and Jeffrey Knotts of Burlington; two daughters, Sherry J. (Collin) Wilson and Dauphine Thomas of Burlington; 12 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren; Bonus Son, Derrick Overstreet of Holland, Mich.; and special friend, Ray Robinson of Burlington.

Besides both of her husbands, she was preceded in death by her parents, daughter, Margo Swift, son, Frederick Morris Brown Jr., three brothers, seven sisters, and two nephews.

She was a very loving and caring woman with a heart of gold. She welcomed anyone she knew as one of her own. Her beautiful soul will be dearly missed.&nbsp;

MarScine Robinson Knotts Brown

Elaine Jeanette Stansberry, 91, died peacefully on Feb. 25, 2023, in Hospice Care at The Klein Center in West Burlington, following a stroke.&nbsp;

Elaine was born Aug. 8, 1931, to Alma (Lawson) and Charles Amile Merringer in Ottumwa, Iowa. She was a member of "The Class of 1949" Ottumwa High Bulldogs.&nbsp;

She married Rex Stansberry on Oct. 23, 1948, in Lancaster, Mo. They had three daughters and one son, Connie Dianne, Karen Sue, Nancy Jo, and Randy Lee. They divorced in 1973.&nbsp;

Elaine entered the workforce at Younkers Dept. Store in Ottumwa, Iowa in 1963 where she continued to work until 1985. She transferred to Younkers in Burlington after the closing of the Ottumwa store. Elaine continued to work at the Younkers store until she retired at age 72.

While working and raising four children, she had a large garden and preserved the vegetables that she grew. She was an excellent seamstress and sewed most of her daughters' clothes. She also made drapes and curtains for the home. Her work ethic was passed on to her children.&nbsp;

In her "spare time," she played bridge and attended "24 Club" which was a group of ladies in the small farming community of Hedrick and Farson, Iowa who gathered monthly for coffee and conversation.&nbsp;

Elaine was a faithful and active member of Calvary Baptist Church in Burlington where she was known for her homemade pies. She attended Bible Study and helped with children's ministries. She was a member of a Christian women's chorus that performed for various nursing homes.&nbsp;

In her later years, she was a voracious reader of Beverly Lewis novels about the Amish. She said the stories reminded her of the era of her childhood. At the Klein Center, she attended and enjoyed all the activities available for the residents.&nbsp;

Elaine was blessed with 10 grandchildren and delighted in her 24 great-grandchildren. Elaine especially loved babies and delighted in holding them.

Elaine is survived by her sister, Beverly Teasdale; daughters, Connie (Bob) Ehlers and Nancy (Bob) Huppenbauer; son, Randy (Becky) Stansberry, and all of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.&nbsp;

 </figure>Elaine Jeanette Stansberry, 91, died peacefully on Feb. 25, 2023, in Hospice Care at The Klein Center in West Burlington, following a stroke.&nbsp;Elaine was born Aug. 8, 1931, to Alma (Lawson) and Charles Amile Merringer in Ottumwa, Iowa. She was a member of "The Class of 1949" Ottumwa High Bulldogs.&nbsp;She married Rex Stansberry on Oct. 23, 1948, in Lancaster, Mo. They had three daughters and one son, Connie Dianne, Karen Sue, Nancy Jo, and Randy Lee. They divorced in 1973.&nbsp;Elaine entered the workforce at Younkers Dept. Store in Ottumwa, Iowa in 1963 where she continued to work until 1985. She transferred to Younkers in Burlington after the closing of the Ottumwa store. Elaine continued to work at the Younkers store until she retired at age 72.While working and raising four children, she had a large garden and preserved the vegetables that she grew. She was an excellent seamstress and sewed most of her daughters' clothes. She also made drapes and curtains for the home. Her work ethic was passed on to her children.&nbsp;In her "spare time," she played bridge and attended "24 Club" which was a group of ladies in the small farming community of Hedrick and Farson, Iowa who gathered monthly for coffee and conversation.&nbsp;Elaine was a faithful and active member of Calvary Baptist Church in Burlington where she was known for her homemade pies. She attended Bible Study and helped with children's ministries. She was a member of a Christian women's chorus that performed for various nursing homes.&nbsp;In her later years, she was a voracious reader of Beverly Lewis novels about the Amish. She said the stories reminded her of the era of her childhood. At the Klein Center, she attended and enjoyed all the activities available for the residents.&nbsp;Elaine was blessed with 10 grandchildren and delighted in her 24 great-grandchildren. Katherine Marie "Kathy" Wilbert, 76, of Burlington, died Monday, Feb. 27, 2023, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born Jan. 7, 1947, in Moline, Ill., she was the daughter of Kenneth and Genevieve Griffith Ross. On May 19, 1979, she married James Wilbert in Mt Pleasant.&nbsp;

She graduated from Rock Island High School in 1965.&nbsp;

Kathy was a homemaker and loved teaching Sunday School for 25 years.

She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. Kathy loved going out to eat and enjoyed cooking, but she enjoyed other people's cooking more. She loved to read, and travel and had a special talent with kids. Kathy always watched the neighborhood kids and helped them out. Family was the most important to her and she always made them feel so loved. Kathy loved her grandchildren and was the best grandma in the world.&nbsp;

Survivors include her husband of 43 years, James Wilbert of Burlington; five children, Mark (Shelly) Masterson of Mt. Pleasant, Matt (Melissa) Masterson of Burlington, Ben (Beth) Wilbert of Hawthorn Woods, Ill., Doug (Cami) Wilbert of Winthrop, Maine, Mindy (Cliff) Donald of Phoenix, Ariz; nine grandchildren; one great-grandchild; brother, David Ross of Moline, Ill.; sister, Karen Overcash of Milan, Ill.; several nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Don and Richard.

Visitation will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, March 4, 2023, at Calvary Baptist Church.

Katherine Marie "Kathy" Wilbert

Stephen Dwight Morrison, 58, of Danville, died Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2023, at his home.

Born Nov. 6, 1964, in Burlington, he was the son of Gerald Dwight Morrison and Sharon Kay Bell Phillips.&nbsp;

Stephen graduated from Burlington Community High School in 1983.&nbsp;

He owned and worked for Steve Morrison Trucking for 40 years. He hauled sand, gravel and anything else that was needed.&nbsp;

Stephen loved NASCAR and sprint car racing. His favorite was World of Outlaws and 34 Raceway. He loved riding his Harley and taking racing photography. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, especially his niece Kayli.

Survivors include his step-dad, Bill (Marlyce Allison) Phillips; sister, Lisa (Bob Boyle) Morrison; niece, Kayli (Jacob) Brooks and their daughter, Noah Brooks.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Sharon Phillips and Gerry Morrison.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

Douglas Eugene Smith, 79, of Burlington, died Wednesday, Feb. 22, 2023, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born April 13, 1943, in Illinois, he was the son of Kenneth and Julia R. Thompson Smith. He married Linda Randall and had three children together then later divorced. In 1973, Douglas married Joann Bell in Burlington.&nbsp;

Douglas graduated from Union High School in 1961.&nbsp;

He worked at JI Case in shipping and receiving for 30 years until his retirement. He was a proud member of UAW Local 807 and was part of the executive board.&nbsp;

He was a member of the Meyer Marina, Moose Lodge, VFW, Eagles Club, and the Burlington Gym. He was in the pool league for the Burlington Gym as well. Douglas was an avid sports fan. He enjoyed watching Illinois basketball and football and SCC basketball. He loved the New York Yankees. His favorite activity was going out on the river, with his wife, on the pontoon.&nbsp;

Survivors include his wife, Joann Smith of Burlington; two daughters, Debi O'Malley and Patricia Pedon; son Jeff Smith; three step-daughters, Dawn Howerton, Dede Samul, and Darsi Hodgkin; 14 grandchildren and great-grandchildren; sister, Cheryl Beilser; one niece and one nephew.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Danny Smith, mother and father-in-law, two brothers-in-law, and one sister-in-law.&nbsp;

Douglas Eugene Smith

Mary Virginia “Ginny” Moss Burrus, 93, died Feb. 21, 2023, at RidgeView Assisted Living in Burlington, with her daughters by her side.

Ginny was born on July 6, 1929, in Hunnewell, Mo. to Ruth and Everett Moss, the second of six children. She attended Monroe City High School, Class of 1947, where she excelled in music, basketball and cheerleading. After graduation, she moved to Burlington where she worked as a telephone operator at Northwestern Bell. She met David Burrus while on a blind date in 1948, and they married on Aug. 5, 1951. He preceded her in death on Dec. 16, 1994.

Ginny served as head of the Communication Department with the regional office of the American Red Cross from 1952 to 1954, then as hostess for Welcome Wagon from 1955 to 1957. The 50s were an eventful time for Ginny as she gave birth to her three daughters, Alicia Ruth, Alexandra, and Anita Christina. She loved to say to anyone who would listen that raising her children was her greatest accomplishment.&nbsp;&nbsp;

In 1967, she became a salesperson for Sun Life Insurance of Canada, one of Iowa’s few female life insurance sales representatives. In 1970, she moved on to Allied Van Lines, where she became one of three certified female moving consultants within the company at that time. She continued in this position until 1980, when she joined her husband David at the Burrus Company.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Politics were&nbsp;very important to Ginny, and she was a staunch Republican. She made an unsuccessful bid for Iowa State Senate in 1984. However, she did catch the attention of U.S. Representative Jim Leach and was hired to work in his First District office in Burlington. When the districts were redrawn, she moved to Iowa City and continued to work for Congressman Leach until she retired in 2001. Jim Leach stood before the U.S. Congress commending Ginny and her work for the people of the First District of Iowa.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Ginny loved to sing and had a beautiful voice. She sang in Bel Canto Chorale and the choir of First Congregational Church, where she was a member. As a greeter on the Delta Queen, she would sing “In Dear Old Burlington” for the riverboat tourists. She also once had a solo performance at Hancher Auditorium in Iowa City.

Ginny belonged to many organizations, including Burlington Area Arts Council, where she was a founding member, Civic Music, Burlington Fine Arts League, and Burlington Golf Club. She loved cooking, golfing, playing bridge, and entertaining. Among the many parties she and David hosted, their annual Christmas Eve open house became a great tradition.

She is survived by her daughters, Alicia Burrus (James Holschuh) of Englewood, Co. and Alexandra Burrus (Douglas Abel) of Burlington; grandchildren, Kehr (Mallory) Schulz of Houston, Texas and Hannah (Jacob) Weaver of Austin, Texas; great-grandchildren, Calla Weaver, Samuel Weaver, and Milo Schulz; son-in-law, Christopher Schulz of Corpus Christi, Texas; brothers, William Moss and Porter Moss of Hunnewell, Mo.; and seven nieces and nephews.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Besides her husband, Ginny was preceded in death by her daughter Anita Schulz, her parents, a brother, Philip Moss, two sisters, Ruth Anne Corwin and Melissa McEwen, and nephew, Jason Corwin.

Visitation will be from 9 to 10:00 a.m. Monday, Feb. 27, 2023, at Prugh Funeral Service, 3940 Division Street.

The funeral service for Mrs. Burrus will be 10 a.m. Monday, Feb. 27, 2023, at Prugh Funeral Service, 3940 Division Street with Pastor Jim Francisco officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.&nbsp;

Mary Virginia “Ginny” Moss Burrus

Letitia &nbsp;Ann "Toots" Webber, 84, of Stockport, died on Monday, Feb. 20, 2023, at the Jefferson County Hospital.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Letitia &nbsp;Ann "Toots" Webber was born on Dec. 26, 1938, in Burlington, to Wayne and Huba Cohagan Hunt. She attended school and graduated from Stockport High School in the class of 1956. 

Shortly after graduation, she married Keith Webber and they became the parents of five children. During this time Letitia attended school to be a Medical Technician and began working at the Hospital in Burlington. Letitia and Keith later divorced. Over the next stage of her life, Letitia married and lost two husbands, Harold Allen Garmoe and Bob Johnson. With her marriage to Harold Allen, she had another son, Kerry. Her path in life eventually brought her back to Keith and she returned to the farm in Stockport. 

Letitia retired from the Burlington Hospital in 2006 and worked for several years after retirement for the Mt. Pleasant Hospital. Letitia was a gifted cook and organized many meals for family and friends. She was a member of the Red Hats Club and the Stockport Methodist Church. She will be missed by her family and the many people who called her a friend.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Letitia was preceded in death by her parents; three daughters, Karmen Webber, Karlene McPherson, and Karla Webber Moser; one sister, Lenora McCoy, and two husbands, Harold Allen Garmoe and Bob Johnson.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Left to honor her memory are her husband, Keith Webber of Stockport; three children, Krista (Larry) Hartman of Burlington, Keith Wesley Webber of Stockport, and Kerry Wayne Garmoe of Stockport; eight grandchildren, Adam, Justina, Nick, Jordan, Cort, Kaleb, Kyle, and Kollin; four great-grandchildren with one on the way; a sister, Jeraldine, Snodgrass of Keosauqua, as well as many extended family and friends.

She will be missed by her family and the many people who called her a friend.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Letitia was preceded in death by her parents; three daughters, Karmen Webber, Karlene McPherson, and Karla Webber Moser; one sister, Lenora McCoy, and two husbands, Harold Allen Garmoe and Bob Johnson.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Left to honor her memory are her husband, Keith Webber of Stockport; three children, Krista (Larry) Hartman of Burlington, Keith Wesley Webber of Stockport, and Kerry Wayne Garmoe of Stockport; eight grandchildren, Adam, Justina, Nick, Jordan, Cort, Kaleb, Kyle, and Kollin; four great-grandchildren with one on the way; a sister, Jeraldine, Snodgrass of Keosauqua, as well as many extended family and friends.Funeral services will begin at 11 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 24, 2023, at the Stockport Methodist Church with Pastor Mary Kathryn Hart and Daine Bales officiating. Burial will be in the Spencer Cemetery immediately following the service. Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 24, 2023, at the church and will last until the time of service.
