Frances “Joan” Carruthers, 71, West Burlington, died Saturday, Dec. 4, 2021, at her residence. Born June 11, 1950, in Fairfield, she was the daughter of Dale Thompson and Frances Elizabeth Mae Pratt Clark. On Dec. 26, 1970, she married Merrill Lee “Bud” Carruthers at the Methodist Church in Keosauqua. Joan was a member of the West Burlington Christian Church. She served as Secretary of the West Burlington Athletic Booster Club. She actively volunteered with the West Burlington Food Pantry and the Iowa Weimaraner Rescue. Joan earned her Bachelor of Science at Iowa State University and her Master’s of Education from Drake University. She was a retired teacher from West Burlington Independent School District. She taught family and consumer sciences for five years at Mediapolis Schools and for 22 years at West Burlington Independent Schools. She was a state advisor for three years for family and consumer sciences. Joan is survived by her husband; three sons, Jonathan Carruthers, Benjamin Carruthers, and Nicholas Carruthers; three siblings, Jim Clark, Jean Clark, and Joe Clark; and seven grandchildren. A memorial service will be held Friday, Dec. 10 at 9:30 a.m. at Lunning Chapel with the Rev. Steven Parker officiating. Visitation will be Thursday, Dec. 9 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Lunning Chapel. Following the memorial service, burial will be limited to family only and will occur at Spencer Cemetery in Stockport. According to her wishes, cremation has been accorded and entrusted to Lunning Chapel. Memorials have been established for the Iowa Weimaraner Rescue and the West Burlington Christian Church Food Pantry.

Bill Brumback, 66, of Oquawka, died Friday, Dec. 3, 2021.

Born Dec. 12, 1954, in Bloomfield and raised in Memphis, Mo., he was the son of Clifford L. and Carol J. Ferris Brumback.

Bill worked for Brighton Chemicals as a warehouse manager, and also did miscellaneous jobs over the years including roofing and installing garage doors.

Newton "Newt" Colburn, Jr., 98, of Burlington, died Saturday, Dec. 4, 2021, at the Klein Center in West Burlington.

Born June 8, 1923, in Philadelphia, Pa., he was the son of Newton Colburn, Sr. and Frances Anderson Colburn. He married Betty Candelet on July 19, 1947. They celebrated 74 years of marriage together.&nbsp;

Newt graduated from Dobbins Vocational School in Philadelphia, Pa.&nbsp;

He was employed by IRC/TRW as a mechanical engineer with over 50 years of service to the company.

Newt was a proud veteran of World War II, serving in the 760th Field Artillery Battalion. He served in New Guinea, the Philippines, and was with the first troops to occupy Japan after the surrender. He served many years in the Honor Guard at military funerals.

He was a member of the Christ Episcopal Church, serving on the Vestry and Property Committee for many years. Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh Crematory.

The memorial service for Newt will be 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 11 at Christ Episcopal Church with Fr. Carl Mann officiating. Family will greet friends at the church prior to the service. Full military honors will be rendered by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard. Private family burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Charlotte Spiekermeier, 75, of West Point, died on Thursday, Dec. 2, 2021, at her home in West Point.
 She was born Jan. 27, 1946, in Aberdeen, S.D., the daughter of Richard and Leona Grace Ericson Thompson. On

Tom was born on May 26, 1948, in 
Burlington to Raymond F. and Dorothy E. Moreland Walz. He was of the Catholic faith.
 He married Pam West in 1982,and together, they raised their three girls, coached softball teams and worked security for Police Productions, an association that hired security crews for traveling musicians and bands. Tom joined the Burlington Police Department on March 25, 1980, and 
served his community as a police officer for over 30 years. After his 
retirement, he remained with the City of Burlington as a courier until 
earlier this year. He was the definition of a volunteer. There was not a single 
community event, parade, or neighborhood block party that you did not 
see Tom either taking tickets, serving food and beverages, providing 
color guard, driving cars, providing escorts, setting up and tearing 
down stages, chairs and barricades or just simple enjoying his time with
 his “family”, the public.
 He is survived by his three daughters, Patty 
Walz of Burlington, Amanda Walz-Orton of Burlington and Amy Schatterman of Coal Valley, Ill.; eight grandchildren and one great-granddaughter; siblings, Larry Walz of Burlington, Connie Yeutsy of Iowa City, Mark Walz of Flower Mound, 
Texas; step-sister Susan Scott; and step-brother David Bloomberg. A Catholic prayer service will be held at 5 p.m. Tuesday, 
Dec. 7 at Burlington Memorial Auditorium. Visitation with family 
will follow until 8 p.m. The funeral service will be held at 10:30 
a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 8 at Burlington Memorial Auditorium. The Rev. 
Shane McCampbell will officiate. According to his wishes, cremation

William P. “Paul” Mathews, 73, of Burlington, died Monday, Nov. 29, 2021, at his home.
 Born Dec. 30, 1947, in Burlington, he was the son of Harry Edward and Alice Evelyn Sodergren Mathews.
 He was an Air Force veteran, serving in the Vietnam War.
He worked for IAAP and later for J.I. Case until his retirement in 2006.

He attended Bethany Lutheran Church. He is survived by his cousins, good friend Melanie Witt Purcell and 
many of the PCM nurses and friends who cared for him for the last 
several years.
 There will be no formal funeral services for Mr. Mathews. Graveside
 services and inurnment will be held at a later date next to his parents
 in Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery.

 Lynne graduated from Muscatine High School in 1978 and also earned her Associates Degree as a legal secretary. 
 On June 17, 2000, Lynne married Dan Smith in Muscatine. 
 She was a legal secretary working for Stanley Consultants as well as
 a homemaker. For the past 15 years, she was a musician at Wesley United
 Methodist Church in Muscatine.
 Survivors include her husband; parents; daughters, Jennifer Chapin of Muscatine and Kristen Liebmann of Wilton; brothers, Mike Miller of Covington, Wash.,
 Mitch Miller of Taylor Ridge, Ill., and Keith Miller of 
Muscatine; and three grandchildren. The funeral service for Lynne will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 6 at Wesley United Methodist Church with the Rev. Brian Oliver 
officiating. Family will receive friends from 9:30 a.m. until the time of
 service at the church. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery, Muscatine

Mary Lou Banks, 87, passed away on Dec. 2, 2021, at the Southeast Regional Hospice 
House in West Burlington.

Born Nov. 19, 1934, in Ralston, Okla., to Memory Ann Montgomery Price and George Andrew Price.

She worked for over 20 years at Elm View Care Center in housekeeping and
 then laundry.

She is survived by two daughters, Georgia Oetken of 
Burlington, Rosemary Flaherty of Mediapolis; one son, Tommy 
Banks of Burlington; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Cremation has been entrusted to the Prugh Crematory.

Brenda A. O'Brien, 49, of Burlington, died Wednesday, Dec. 1, 2021, at her home in Burlington.

Otto Karl Trousil, 95, of West Burlington died Nov. 29, 2021, at Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center Hospice House in West Burlington. He was born Jan. 1, 1926, to Leopold and Angelika Trousil, German Nationals in Lisnice, former Czechoslovakia. On Oct. 12, 1951, he married Wilfriede Fromm in Rodheim, West Germany. She preceded him in death. Otto attended school in Olomouc until the age of 14, whereupon he entered an apprenticeship to learn all aspects of aeronautics and building airplanes. As with all German youth during WWII, it was mandatory to join a two-year work program. At the age of 18 he was required to join a service, so he joined the Luftwaffe and trained on motorized aircraft, later being assigned to an engineering battalion in France. He surrendered in the latter days of the war to American forces who then turned him over to French forces; he was kept as a POW for 18 months. With the help of the Red Cross, he was reunited with his parents and siblings. He then started a 17-year career working for Lufthansa as a mechanic and participated in 1949 in the Berlin airlift, flying provisions into West Berlin due to the Soviet Union's blockade of the city. In 1964, the family immigrated to the United States, first living in Rockford, Ill., and then moving to West Burlington in 1967 after taking a job with Import Motors until his retirement in 1989. He is survived by his son, Hans Trousil and daughter, Antje Johns, both of West Burlington; three grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. There will be a memorial service at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 16 at Lunning Chapel with family receiving friends beginning at 9 a.m. Inurnment will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery in West Burlington following services. Cremation has been accorded and entrusted to the care of Lunning Chapel.

James David Myers, 55, of Burlington died Friday, Nov. 26, 2021.

Jim was born to Norman “Duke” Myers and Anita Beine Myers on Jan. 1, 1966. After graduating from Burlington High School in 1984, he played college basketball at Wayne State in Nebraska, Southeastern Community College, and William Penn College where he graduated in 1988.&nbsp; He enlisted in the United States Navy in 1989 and served aboard the USS Cayuga during Desert Shield.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Jim coached at several area schools, including Keokuk Cardinal Stritch, Notre Dame, BHS, and SCC. He became the head coach for the girls’ basketball program at Notre Dame in 2014. He was selected as the Iowa Girls’ Basketball Coaches Association class 4A District Coach of the Year in 2005 while coaching at BHS and was selected again in 2016 as the 1A District Coach of the Year while coaching at Notre Dame.&nbsp; He coached the Notre Dame Nikes in the state tournament for five years in a row, four of those as head coach.

He began his professional career at Young House Family Services where he started ACT Day Treatment and he worked at Burlington High School on the administrative team. He worked in the private industry for RMGD, Physical Therapy Works, and Brockway Mechanical and Roofing before retiring in March of 2021.

Jim volunteered for the American Little League Board, was a coach for Little League, and officiated basketball games and flag football games for the Y.&nbsp; He started the Southeast Iowa Suns basketball team which led to multiple girls’ and boys’ teams at all levels.&nbsp; He coached for Team Iowa, an AAU team out of Cedar Rapids, and held a variety of skills camps for youth throughout southeast Iowa and west central Illinois. He and his wife served as host parents for players on the SCC basketball team during the early 2000s. He announced the BHS football games and the SCC men’s basketball games on KBUR prior to his diagnosis.&nbsp; He recently served on the advisory board for the construction&nbsp; trades department at Southeastern Community College and Southwestern Community College. In September, he was honored for his service to the Associated Builders and Contractors of Iowa Apprenticeship and Training Trust.

Coach Myers is survived by his wife, Monica Mathews Myers; his daughters, Marissa Riffel of Mediapolis, Morgan Myers of Wilson, N.C., and Johanna Myers of Burlington; seven siblings, Michelle Schulte of Burlington, Christine Smith of Keokuk, Joseph Myers, Maureen Behne, Laura Myers, Veronica Royer, all of Burlington, and John Myers of Perth, Australia; and two granddaughters.&nbsp;

Debra Sue Jay Westlake Mason, 66, of Burlington, died Saturday, Nov. 27, 2021, at her home.

Born Dec. 5, 1954, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Franklin "Wacky" and Katherine "Kotzy" Hoschek Jay. On June 22, 1974, she married Kenneth Dale Westlake at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Burlington. He died on July 11, 1990. On January 29, 2001, she married G. Ed Mason at the Great River Klein Center.&nbsp;

She was a 1973 graduate of Burlington High School, and attended SCC to get certificates in both their culinary program and their recreation program.

She was the recreation director at the Great River Klein Center.

She was a member of Triker's of the Third Wheel, The American Legion, several card clubs, The Eagles Club, and Hamilton-Walters Marine Corps League.&nbsp;

Survivors include her second husband; one daughter, Heidi Sue Westlake of Burlington; one son, K. Kirk Westlake of Florida; three siblings, Kathy Jay of Wever, John E. Jay of Burlington, and Julie Luttenegger of Burlington; and three grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until 12 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 2 at Prugh-Thielen Funeral Home.

Larry D. Mincer, 81, of Burlington, died Wednesday, Nov. 24, 2021, at Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House.

Born Sept. 17, 1940, in Washington, he was the son of Maynard, F. “Mike” and Doreen Fairlie Mincer. Larry was raised by his grandparents, Ralph and Dorothy Fairlie.

Larry was a graduate of Sigourney Iowa High School. He was in law enforcement for nine and a half years. He drove trucks for the next 30 years, retiring April 1, 2006.

He was a member of Divine Mercy Parish, the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 150, and Knights of Columbus.

Survivors include his wife; daughter, Susan Marshall of Ankeny; son, Bobby Mincer of Burlington; sister, Janet Higdon of Fort Madison; and five grandchildren.

He died April 2, 1970. Dorothy graduated from Huron High School in 1941 and attended the College of Commerce Burlington Business School. For over 40 years, she was the secretary for St John’s Catholic Church and Sacred Heart Cemetery. She was a member of Divine Mercy Parish and sang in the church choir. Dorothy volunteered with Birthright, St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry, and sang with Bel Canto. Survivors include son, Charles Buhmeyer of Burlington; daughter, Beth Brown of Burlington; sister, Mary Ann Frank of Burlington; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Kathryn W. Klaus, 75, of Burlington, died Wednesday, Nov. 24, 2021 at The Madison in Fort Madison.

Born Sept. 17, 1946, in Fairfield, she was the daughter of Eryl and Edith Gingles VanDyke.

Kathryn married Tom Crossett in June 1964. They later divorced. She married David Klaus on June 25, 1995, in Denver, Colo.

She was a graduate of Columbus Junction High School in 1964 and was a graduate of Dayton School of Hair Design in Burlington. Kathryn was a self-employed cosmetologist for 10 years, retiring in 2011.

Survivors include her husband; daughters, Julia Phelps of Houston, Texas, and Amanda Smith of Burlington; stepson, David Klaus of Burlington; brother, George VanDyke of Nichols; half sister, Shirley Reynolds of Cedar Rapids; 10 grandchildren; and 18 great grandchildren. According to her wishes, Kathryn’s body has been deeded to the University of Iowa for medical research.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Beverly Jean Parker, 68, of Burlington, died Monday, Nov. 22, 2021, at the Arbor Court in Mount Pleasant.

Born April 4, 1953, in Fort Madison, she was the daughter of Edward Lee and Dorothy Frances Schroeder Scott. On Dec. 17, 1989, she married Carl Parker in Salem. He died on June 14, 1999.

She was a graduate of Burlington High School.&nbsp;

Beverly was a homemaker and helped around their farm.&nbsp;

Survivors include her son, Edward Parker of Wapello; daughter, Delanie Parker-Brider of Monmouth, Ill.; two brothers, Jeffrey Scott and Timothy Scott, both of Burlington; one sister, Annette Scott Rankin of West Burlington; and five grandchildren.

Visitation will be Monday, Nov. 29 from 2 until 6 p.m. with the family to receive friends from 4 until 6 p.m. at Prugh-Thielen Funeral Home.

Private family burial will be held at a later date in Forest Home Cemetery, Mount Pleasant.

A memorial has been established for her family.

Diana Marie Miller, 76, of Burlington, died Saturday, Nov. 20, 2021, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born Nov. 16, 1945, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Earnest "Art" and Virginia Burkett Robins Timmerman. On April 25, 1964, she married Donald Miller in Oquawka, Ill.&nbsp;

Diana worked for Exide Batteries for 24 years and upon their closing, she went to Dayton's School of Hair Design and got her Cosmetology Degree. She then became an instructor there and worked for them until her retirement.

Survivors include her husband; four children, Donna Miller, Larry Miller, and Meta Miller Dixon, all of Burlington, and Ginny Atchley of Danville; one sister, Melody Peterson of Burlington; one brother, Earnie Timmerman of Burlington; 11 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for the Des Moines County Humane Society.

David Alan McSorley, 60, of West Burlington, died Saturday, Nov. 20, 2021, at Danville Care Center. Born May 27, 1961, in Sioux City, he was the son of Charles McSorley and Barbara Brown McSorley-Smith.

David worked at Texas Instruments, as an over-the-road semi driver, and at Manheim Auto Auction in Dallas, Texas. Survivors include his mother, Barbara McSorley-Smith of West Burlington; father, Charles McSorley of Denton, Texas; and brother, Rick McSorley of Silver Spring, Md.&nbsp;

Cremation has been accorded and entrusted to Lunning Funeral Chapel. There will be no service at this time. A memorial has been established for the Des Moines County Humane Society.

Larry E. Clawson, 82, of Danville died Tuesday, Nov. 16, 2021 at Danville Care Center. Born Nov. 3, 1939, in Butte, Mont., he was the son of Ernest Lavern and Nellie Dowling Clawson. He married Harriet Potter; they later divorced. Larry worked for Hughes Aircraft and as an engineer before moving to Nebraska. He then began working for Roto-Rooter in Omaha, Neb. Larry enjoyed volunteering for the Red Cross and the animal shelter, where he was responsible for transportation of pets from shelter to shelter. Survivors include one son, Eugene Clawson, and one daughter, Annette Clawson, both of Middletown; and one brother, Ken Clawson of Montana. Cremation has been accorded and entrusted to the care of Lunning Chapel. Inurnment will be at a later date at Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery.
