Maureen Kemp, 77, of Burlington, died Wednesday, February 25, 2026, at her home in Burlington, Iowa, surrounded by her family.

Born April 2, 1948, in Weehawken, New Jersey, the daughter of John and Doris (Divine) Mannion. &nbsp;On June 6, 1998 she married Dean Kemp in Troy, Montana.&nbsp;

Moe was a very talented and kind person. &nbsp;She was a great cook and owned several of her own restaurants. &nbsp;She later went on to work a variety of different jobs, including Community in Action and Midwest Eye Care. &nbsp;Moe had an eclectic mix of interests and hobbies, ranging from ballet to flight lessons. &nbsp;Her kindness and zest for life will be missed, but her memory will continue through all who love her.

Survivors include her husband, Dean Kemp of Burlington; daughters, Siobhan McNulty of Bend, Oregon, and Dannica McGrath of the Philadelphia area, Pennsylvania; step-children, Monica Kemp, Nakoa Kemp, Leah Virginia III Droze, and Aziel Kemp; thirteen grandchildren; sisters, Kathleen Morgan of Colorado, and Jeanne Weeden of California.

She is preceded in death by her sisters, Colleen and Ellen.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh Crematory. &nbsp;No visitation or services are scheduled at this time.

Trevor Scott Huss, 28, of Burlington, Iowa, passed away Monday, February 23, 2026, at Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born on February 21, 1998, in Burlington, Iowa, he was the son of Almeda “Dottie” Huss and Joe Cale.

Trevor was a 2019 graduate of Burlington High School. He loved playing with his Elmo toys, singing, and dancing, going for golf cart rides, camping with family and friends, spending time at school, and participating in Special Olympics, which brought Trevor the most joy. He loved nothing more than his mother’s silly antics while driving and his obnoxious videos on his iPad. Trevor’s family was his entire world and safe place. His laugh was tenacious, his smile so bright, and he saw joy in everything. To know Trevor was to love Trevor. His kindness and love will be deeply missed by so many who loved him very much.

He is survived by his parents Dottie Huss and Joe Cale of Burlington; brothers: Jerry Hall of Burlington, Jacob (Samantha) Carman of Winfield, Iowa, and Brayden Huss of Burlington; nephew Bo Carman of Winfield and niece Ja’Kiya Smith of Fort Madison; uncles Lloyd “Lloydy” Huss of Carman, Illinois, and Cecil Huss of Burlington; aunt Carol (Eric) Huss of Carman Illinois. He is also survived by several stepbrothers, stepsisters, cousins, and lots of friends.

The family would like to thank his caregiver, Gringer Grisham, who cared for him until the very end.

He was preceded in death by his grandfather Lloyd “Jinx” Huss Jr., grandmother Marilyn Warren, and uncle Ricky Warren.

Eric Morrow, 38, of Burlington, died Wednesday, February 25, 2026, at his home.

Born September 13, 1987, in Chicago, Illinois, he was the son of Eric Morrow and Karen Strawhorn Shuler.

Eric was a jokester. He was funny, loving and outgoing and loved to be around people, especially his family and nieces and nephews. He loved playing basketball and was a huge Michael Jordan and Chicago Bears fan. He loved to dress the best and always enjoyed eating some pig feet.

He is survived by his son Eric Shuler; parents Eric Morrow and Karen (Eric) Shuler both of Chicago, Illinois; siblings, Ashante (Antron) Burnett, Tierre Morrow and Kerea Morrow and Curtis Veal who was like a brother to him; nieces and nephews, Trent Burnett, Taylor Burnett, Trelon Burnett and Trinity Burnett; aunts, Kinya Strawhorn and Tawanna Morrow; uncle Jerry Strawhorn and his favorite cousin Jayla Williams.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother Laura Strawhorn and uncle Kenneth Strawhorn.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Cremation has been accorded and entrusted to the care of Lunning Chapel.

A memorial has been established for the family.

Larry Lynn Wheeler, 75, of West Burlington, died February 25, 2026, at Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in West Burlington. He was born in Burlington, Iowa, on July 19, 1950, the son of Jack and Doris Wheeler.

Larry was a 1969 graduate of West Burlington High School. Larry was a veteran, having served in the US Army. He worked at General Electric and then had a long and storied career as a law enforcement officer. Larry worked for the West Burlington Police Department, even serving for a short time as interim Chief. He then worked at the Des Moines County Sheriff’s Office as a Sergeant.&nbsp;

Larry was an outdoorsman through and through. He enjoyed fishing, duck hunting, and turkey hunting, among other activities. Larry enjoyed a good meal, especially breakfast, with his fellow law enforcement retiree “breakfast club”. He also delighted in eating frog legs. Whoever enjoyed these meals with him was also sure to hear a story or two, as Larry always had a good one at hand.&nbsp;

Larry was known for his kindness, practicality, and sense of humor. He was quick to make a joke and tease all of those he loved. But he was also known for giving wise and straightforward advice. Larry’s kindness was especially shown by his lifelong dedication to taking care of his sister, Tammy.

Larry is fondly remembered by son, David Wheeler, of Lakeland, Fla., grandchildren Alanna, Jack, and Lily Wheeler, all of Lakeland, sisters Nan (Brent) Johnston of Kingwood, Texas, and Tammy of West Burlington, and many, many, special lifelong friends. Larry is also survived by his fiancée, Sheila Crowner, who was his constant companion over the past five years.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his stepmother, Bert Wheeler.&nbsp;

According to his wishes, cremation services have been entrusted to Lunning Chapel. Though no services are planned, a celebration of life will be held at a later date. A memorial has been established for Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House and the Klein Center. Contributions can be sent to Lunning Chapel.

Sidney H. Amenell, 79, of Burlington, died Monday, February 23, 2026, at the Wapello Specialty Care in Wapello.

Born February 16, 1947, in Burlington, he was the son of Catherine E. Shortridge.

Sid graduated from Burlington High School before serving his country with the United States Navy.&nbsp; Sid went on to work for Alliant Energy for 42 years as a Plant Operator.

Sid enjoyed socializing with his friends over a few beverages.&nbsp; He had a sarcastic sense of humor and was a touch ornery.&nbsp; He loved spending time with his grandchildren and family.&nbsp; He was quite a character and will be missed.

Survivors include his children, Matthew (Jenna) Amenell and Chris (Jennifer) Amenell; six grandchildren; one great grandchild; and siblings, Timothy Dietsch and Molly Curry.

He was preceded in death by his mother; brother, Jerry Amenell; and sister, Susan Griffith.

Cremation has been entrusted to Prugh Crematory.

Family will receive friends from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. on Friday, February 27, 2026, at Prugh's Chapel, 317 N 4th Street in downtown Burlington.&nbsp; Full military honors will be rendered by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard to conclude the visitation.

Larry Alan Walz, 75, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Monday, February 23, 2026, at the Klein Center in West Burlington, Iowa.

Born June 26, 1950, to Raymond F. and Dorothy E. (Moreland) Walz at St. Francis Hospital in Burlington, Iowa.&nbsp; Larry graduated from Burlington High School in 1968. &nbsp;

Larry was raised in the Catholic faith and accepted Jesus as his Lord and Savior.

He worked at the Burlington YMCA as a locker room attendant for several years.&nbsp; He also became SCUBA certified while working there.&nbsp; In addition, he served as an assistant flagman at 34 raceway for 10 years.

The majority of Larry’s career was spent working at General Electric from 1970 until his retirement in 2005.&nbsp; While there he made many friends and enjoyed food days, golf league, “Take your child to work day” and numerous company picnics at Seven Ponds.

Larry married Sandra K. Cowan on July 31, 1976 and together they raised two wonderful children, Andrea E. Walz Hartman and Christopher D. Walz.&nbsp; They later divorced.

Larry enjoyed golf, plastic model building and music, even unofficially managing the band Penthouse in the 70’s.&nbsp; He was a member of the Burlington Model Railroad Club and an amateur photographer, serving on the Burlington Steamboat Days Board as photographer for 15 years, getting to serve alongside his brother, Tom.&nbsp; Larry was an avid Chicago Cubs and Iowa Hawkeyes fan, attending many games and hosting tailgates out of his RV.

One of his most proud moments was when he was standing at the 50-yard line at Kinnick Stadium being honored as the 2001 University of Iowa Dad of the Year.

Larry will be greatly missed and remembered by his children, Andrea Walz Hartman (Duane) of Burlington, Christopher D. Walz (Kate) of Ottumwa; his granddaughter and little sweetie Kayleigh Hartman; siblings, Connie (Dave) Yeutsy of Iowa City, Mark (Karla) Walz of Flower Mound, Texas and beloved nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Linda Robbins, brother Thomas G. Walz and brothers-in-law Fred Robbins and Dr. Dennis Cowan.

Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, February 25th at Lunning Chapel where the family will receive friends.&nbsp; The funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m.&nbsp; The Rev. Todd Engstrom will officiate.&nbsp; Entombment will be held in Burlington Memorial Park Mausoleum.&nbsp;

Pedro Rocha, 87, of Burlington, Iowa, passed away Sunday, February 22, 2026 at his home.

Born on June 29, 1938, in Mexico, he was the son of Gilberto and Catalina (Gonzalez) Rocha. He married Yolanda Puente on October 24, 1959.&nbsp;

Pedro was very happy man with a great sense of humor. He was always making people laugh, telling stories and was eager to help others. Pedro treasured and took pride in his lawn, planting tomatoes and strawberries.&nbsp;

He is survived by his wife, Yolanda; three children, Juanita Maria Rocha, David (Ivonne) Rocha and Catalina (John) Berry; eleven grandchildren, David Orr, Shannon Smith, Steven Orr, Nicholas Harris, Benjamin Harris, Sarah South, Pedro Rocha, Diego Rocha, Alessandro Rocha, Quetzalcoatl Leon and Anna Berry; and nine great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Minerva Harris; and two sisters Delores and Rebeca Rocha.&nbsp;

Born on June 19, 1964, in Burlington, Carin was the daughter of Thomas J. and Linda (McLaughlin) Clayton. She grew up in the city she would call home her entire life, graduating from Burlington High School in 1982 before going on to earn her degree from the University of Iowa.

Carin spent a decade working at Hope Haven in Day Hab, where she poured herself into caring for her clients with a devotion that defined her. She didn't simply do the work, she loved the people. That warmth was something everyone around her felt. Carin didn't know a stranger. She moved through the world with humor, openness, and a spirit that made any room better for her presence.

Outside of work, Carin had a gift for finding beauty in unexpected places. She loved antiquing, and there was no small satisfaction in tracking down just the right owl lamp. Those who knew her best know she found joy in the world and loved spreading that happiness to all those close to her.

Her boys and her family were her world. She is survived by her two sons, Benjamin Nelson and Alexander Nelson; her special friend Richie Butherus; her parents, Thomas and Linda Clayton; her siblings, Tommy (Josie) Clayton, Becky Shanahan, and Susie (Troy) Kuster; and numerous nieces, nephews, and great-nieces. She was preceded in death by her maternal and paternal grandparents.

A private family ceremony will be held at Lunning Chapel. A celebration of Carin's life will follow at the Eagles Club on Thursday, February 26th, beginning at 5:00 p.m.

A memorial has been established in her name. In accordance with her wishes, cremation has been entrusted to the care of Lunning Chapel.

Carl A. Newman, 74, of Dallas City, Illinois, passed away at 2:54 a.m. Saturday, February 21, 2026 at his home. Carl was born on March 27, 1951, in Decatur, Illinois, the son of Joseph R. and Donna D. Wilcox Newman.&nbsp;

He graduated from Dallas City High School in 1969 and soon began a 31-year career with CASE IH in Burlington, Iowa.

Following his retirement, he worked for Union Pacific Railroad and drove for Hetrick Trucking delivering mail for the United States Postal Service.

On July 16, 1988, he married his loving wife, Sharon Watkins, in Dallas City, Illinois. She survives.

Carl was a talented carpenter who took great pride in his craftsmanship. He enjoyed hunting and spending time on the river, where he felt most at home.

In addition to his wife, Sharon, he is survived by five children: Andy (Verna) Watkins, Bob (Lindsay) Watkins, Candice (Paul) Chapman, Carl A. Newman II, and Shawn (Stephanie) Watkins; 16 grandchildren; and 9 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by two brothers, Ronald (Shirley) Newman and Kris Newman; his mother-in-law, Marianne Holtsclaw; and many brothers- and sisters-in-law.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Charles Newman.

Cremation has been entrusted to Banks &amp; Beals Funeral Home.&nbsp;

A graveside service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, February 27, 2026 at Harris Cemetery, near Dallas City. A luncheon will follow at the Grace Bible Church Fellowship Hall.&nbsp;

Rhonda Jane (DeReu) Deitrick, 69, of Burlington, Iowa, passed away peacefully at home on February 20, 2026, surrounded by her daughters, who were the pride and joy of her life. She faced her battle with cancer as she did everything else, with a courageous heart and a spirit that refused to be dimmed. Rhonda’s story began on August 30, 1956, in Pipestone, Minnesota, born to Rodney and Mary DeReu. (“Sister #3”) She grew up in Stillwater, Minnesota, where she graduated from high school before beginning a life defined by service and family. In 1979, she enlisted in the U.S. Army—it was during her service that she met the love of her life, Robert Deitrick. They were married on January 15, 1982, in Newport News, Virginia, and eventually settled in Mediapolis, Iowa, to raise their three beautiful daughters. Rhonda was a woman of remarkable spunk and a famously contagious laugh.

She was a true force of nature. She was defined by her “get it done” attitude, her meticulous list-making, and a creative, strong-willed spirit. Her career path was as adventurous as she was—from managing the Burlington Golf Club, owning her own restaurant, and providing compassionate care for others in the community and local nursing homes. She gave her heart to her work. She eventually retired from Shearer’s to provide care for her husband, Rob.&nbsp;Rhonda was happiest with the sun on her face and the grass between her toes. She spent her best days lounging by her pool, tending to her flowers barefoot, or finding peace on the trails of Geode State Park. Above all else, she was the ultimate “Granny.” Her grandchildren were her world; she lived to spoil them with sleepovers, endless adventures, and unconditional love and support. While her trademark stubbornness meant she rarely allowed others to care for her, her life was a beautiful masterclass in caring for everyone else.

She is survived by her three daughters, Jennifer (Chuck) Reid and Angela Deitrick of Burlington, and Samantha (Lance) Jones of Mediapolis. Her seven grandchildren: Braden, Jakson, and Bryce Reid, Autumn and Julian Swank, and Colton and Brayden Jones. Her siblings: “sister #1” Gayle (Kent) Johnson, “sister #2” Marcia DeReu, “sister #4” Linda (Scott) Marshall, “sister #5” Brenda (Rick) Guse, “sister #6” Sharon (Scott) Ries, and her &amp;quot; one and only&amp;quot; brother, Greg (Sue) DeRue, and “sister #7” Lisa Rylander. Sheryl Ann (Sommerfeld) Carhoff, 71, of Cedar Rapids and formerly of the Mount Pleasant community, passed away on Wednesday, December 17, 2025, at Mercy Hospital in Cedar Rapids.&nbsp;

Sheryl was born on May 6, 1954, in Mount Pleasant, the daughter of Paul F. and Virginia (Lane) Sommerfeld. She graduated from Mount Pleasant High School and went to further her education at Southeastern Community College, graduating with a degree in Nursing.&nbsp;&nbsp;Sheryl was united in marriage to John Carhoff in August of 2011, at the Trenton United Methodist Church. Sheryl worked at the Burlington Hospital and the Hospital in Lincoln, Nebraska.&nbsp;&nbsp;She retired from Home Health Care.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;She enjoyed crafting, gardening and her flowers, shopping, and traveling.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Those thankful for sharing in her life include her husband, John Carhoff, of Cedar Rapids, her sister, Charlotte (Steve) Zihlman of Mount Pleasant and her brother, Richard (Lynne) Sommerfeld of Alamo, Texas, and several nieces and nephews, her brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Marilyn Carhoff, William (Becky) Carhoff, James (Vickie) Carhoff, Rebecca (Greg) Smith, Naomi (Steve) Lipper and Suellen Schleisman.&nbsp;

Earl L. Davis, 83, of Middletown, Iowa, passed away Saturday, February 21, 2026, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in West Burlington.

Earl Leon Davis was born on August 31, 1943, to Raymond and Marilyn (Patton) Davis. Earl worked with Boilermaker Local 83 for over 30 years. He proudly served his country in the United States Army from 1962 to 1965.

On April 27, 1973, Earl married Cindy Mellinger at Oak Street Baptist Church in Burlington. Together, they have two children, Dayna (Cody) Daves of Danville and Dawna (Brian) McKillip of Fort Madison. Earl is also survived by sister, Sandra Picken, stepsister, Sandra Fugate, and stepbrother, Jack West.

Earl enjoyed hunting, fishing and taking care of his yard. He was a past member of Burlington Motorcycle Clubs, NRA and the Eagles Club.

A private family graveside service will be held in Kossuth Cemetery, rural Mediapolis.

Danny Lee Knotts 65, of Burlington, died at home on February 10, 2026. Born to Larry K. &amp; Judith A. (Nesetril) Knotts on June 29th, 1960, in Burlington.&nbsp;

In 1985 he married Judi Dugan, where he gained a bonus daughter; they then had three children together. They later divorced.

Danny attended Burlington Community High School and later joined the Marines. He worked in Construction the majority of his life. Danny loved spending time with his family, especially his children and grandchildren. Danny also had a deep love for his dog Gizmo and looked forward to the time he got to spend with him. Danny was an avid Bears fan and loved watching football. He also enjoyed fishing, listening to AC/DC, and sitting around shooting the bull.

Survivors include two brothers- Randy Knotts of Galesburg Ill. And Larry Knotts Jr of Burlington, one sister, Kandy (Jason) Sharp of Burlington, IA. Three children - bonus daughter, Joy (Travis) Hainline-Custer of Galesburg, Ill., son- Steven W. Knotts of Galesburg, and daughter- Jennifer (Spence) Slaymaker of Coweta, Okla., Six granddaughters, three grandsons, and one great granddaughter, several cousins, nieces, and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his mother, father, infant son Damien Knotts, infant daughter Crystal Knotts, sister Darla Clabaugh of Texas, and cousin Steven L. Knotts.

Danny Lee Knotts

John Lewis Crist, Jr., 87, passed away peacefully at his home in Phoenix, Ariz., on February 13, 2026.

On November 11, 1938, John (also known as Jack by family and friends) was born to John Lews Crist, Sr. and Inger H. Haurberg, in Buda, Illinois. He graduated from Toulon High School in 1956 in Toulon, Illinois. Then he went on to Eureka College in Eureka, Illinois. He was the president of his fraternity, Tau Kappa Epsilon. He was proud to share this honor with President Ronald Reagan. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree that led him to do many wonderful things in his career.&nbsp;

He taught Biology at Kewanee High School in Kewanee, Illinois until he was accepted as one of the first volunteers in the Peace Corp in Liberia, Africa for two years.

After the Peace Corp, he returned to Kewanee, Illinois and married Donna M. Ording. They had two daughters, Kelly and Kimberly. He worked for the government starting up Job Corp centers in four different states, California, Massachusetts, Indiana and Clinton, Iowa.&nbsp;

He and his family moved to Burlington, Iowa in 1969, where he was employed as HR Manager at General Electric.&nbsp;

He met his life partner, Marjean Smith, in 1979 and they moved to Phoenix, Arizona after he retired from General Electric in 1986. They started cleaning business together, Clean Interiors, which he was still very involved with until his final days.

He loved watching old western TV shows and sports. He loved the Iowa Hawkeyes, Chicago Bears and Cubs as well as the Phoenix Diamondbacks, Suns and Cardinals. &nbsp;

He is survived by his daughters; Kelly (Brian) Cohen, Kimberly Brenneman, Valery Smith, Natalie (Jeff) Bartenhagen; grandchildren, Kayley (Bailey) Ehringer, Nikolas Kirgan, Isabella Kirgan, Rivir Brenneman, Drayke Brenneman, Mycah Brenneman and Hunter Miskey; several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his life partner; his parents; his brothers, Ralph H. Crist and James A. Crist; his niece, Janine Crist.

According to his wishes, cremation has been entrusted to the care of Angels Cremation &amp; Burial in Mesa, Arizona. A private family service will be held at later date.&nbsp;

Haurberg, in Buda, Illinois. He graduated from Toulon High School in 1956 in Toulon, Illinois. Then he went on to Eureka College in Eureka, Illinois. He was the president of his fraternity, Tau Kappa Epsilon. He was proud to share this honor with President Ronald Reagan. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree that led him to do many wonderful things in his career.&nbsp;He taught Biology at Kewanee High School in Kewanee, Illinois until he was accepted as one of the first volunteers in the Peace Corp in Liberia, Africa for two years.After the Peace Corp, he returned to Kewanee, Illinois and married Donna M. Ording. They had two daughters, Kelly and Kimberly. Anne B. Hammer Fedler, 89, of Burlington, died Thursday, February 19, 2026, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in West Burlington. Born April 11, 1936, in Grandview, IA, she was the daughter of Herbert D. and M. Lucindy Luckenbill Hammer. On February 27, 1960, she married Gene F. Fedler in West Point, Iowa. He died January 2, 2012. Anne had the privilege to study at multiple colleges. Notably, she attended Drake University for her general education, Broadlawns Hospital School of Nursing in Polk County, and later Western Illinois University to become a nursing instructor.&nbsp; Anne worked as a registered nurse for the Alaska Native Health Service in Kotzebue, AK, and later she worked as a nurse in many areas. Anne ended her career in the health care after 25 years, as instructor for the Nursing Program at Southeastern Community College. She was a member of Divine Mercy Parish. Anne was a board member of many educational, church and community organizations over the years. She received the Governor's Volunteer Award. She enjoyed flower gardening, sewing, decorating, gifting homemade pies to family and friends and especially spending time with her grandchildren and attending their activities. Kevin L. Copeland, 44, of Burlington, died unexpectedly Thursday, February 12, 2026, at his home.

Born August 4, 1981, in Burlington, he was the son of Kerman Lee and Carol Sue Cullen Copeland. On October 27, 2005, he married Tabitha Myers in Burlington.&nbsp;

He was a 1999 graduate of Mediapolis High School. Kevin continued his education at SCC and Western Illinois University, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design.

Kevin proudly served his country in the U.S. Army National Guard for 22 years, with the HHC, 224th Engineer Battalion, where he retired with the final rank of Chief Warrant Officer II. He was deployed with his unit to Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom from 2004 until 2006, where he received several medals.

He was very active in the Mediapolis American Legion Daniel Matson Post 234, local VFW Post 102, and was a lifetime member of Ducks Unlimited and the NRA. Though Kevin was a private man, he had a deep love for art and reading. There was nothing he wouldn’t do for others, especially his brothers in arms.

Survivors include his wife Tabitha and daughters, Grace and Courtney Copeland all of Burlington; his mother, Carol Copeland of Burlington; two brothers, Ross (Melissa) Copeland of Mediapolis, and James R. Copeland of Cedar Rapids; as well as many members of his military family.&nbsp;

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh Crematory.

Visitation will be from noon until 6:00 p.m. with the family to receive friends from 5 to 6 p.m. Friday, Feb. 27, 2026 at Prugh Funeral Service, 3940 Division Street.

Emilio Camacho Hernandez, 78, of Burlington, Iowa, passed away on February 12, 2026, at the HCA Houston Health Care Northwestern Hospital in Houston, Texas. He was born on May 22, 1947, in San Luis Potosí, Mexico. He was the son of Pascual and Alberta Maria (Camacho) Hernandez.

Emilio left Mexico for the United States to find a better way of life. He met Rosa Gonzalez in Michigan in the summer of 1965 and married her on June 27, 1966, in Hysham, Montana. She survives. For over 60 years, they were constant companions and each other's best friends.

Even though Emilio left Mexico as a young man, he never left it in his heart. He still felt he was Mexican. He thought like a Mexican. He taught his family about their roots in Mexico by telling them stories and taking them back to Mexico on family trips. His children grew up knowing different cultures and different ways of life. They are first-generation American citizens.

Emilio only attended school in Mexico until the 6th grade. Still, he obtained his GED in the United States and later an associate's degree in applied science in Diesel Mechanics from Indian Hills Community College in Ottumwa, Iowa.

Emilio worked for J. I. Case for twenty-five years and retired in 1994. He was mechanically inclined and enjoyed working on cars. He loved world history and current politics. He was a voracious reader and a news watcher. He loved debating anyone with an opposing opinion. He was also a lover of music, a love which he passed down to his children and grandchildren. He taught them they could find solace and healing in a song.

Emilio also loved his past pets. Bolis, Fluffy, BJ, Sheba, Hagar, Chelsea, Smokey, Tucker, and Hou Hou (Wow Wow). He loved spoiling them and giving them treats.

Emilio was a pillar of strength for his entire family, including his extended family from Mexico. In the 1970's, Emilio helped many of them move to the United States to find a better way of life. Emilio believed in the American Dream. He believed he achieved it. He believed in hard work and education. Emilio was a man of integrity and honesty. He knew that faith and education were the keys to success, and he always encouraged his children to trust the Lord, study hard, and never settle for less; always strive for more. Emilio's time spent with his children and grandchildren brought him the most joy. They were his greatest pride.

Emilio lived a full life and took on each day as a challenge. His final years were spent with his wife and daughter, Angelica, in Houston, Texas. They spent their free time traveling, watching movies, dining out, and attending concerts. He was on the go until the end.

He is survived by his wife Rosa; three children: Angelica Hernandez of Houston, Texas, Ruben (Erika) Hernandez of Tulsa, Oklahoma and Maricela (Mark) Wilkinson of Fulshear, Texas; ten grandchildren: Andrew Knox, Max (Des) Hernandez, Skyler (Whitney) Hernandez, Shaela Hernandez, Brendan Hernandez, Raegan Hernandez, Daylen Hernandez, Sara Wilkinson, Sophia Wilkinson and Sam Wilkinson; two great grandchildren Declan Hernandez and Rayne Hernandez and one more great granddaughter on the way; two sisters: Hilda Hernandez of Peoria, Illinois and Reyna Gonzalez of Baytown, Texas. Numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews also survive him.

To the Gonzalez family, who took him in as one of their own in 1965. He loved and cherished you all his entire life and will for eternity.

He was preceded in death by his parents and four siblings: Efigino Hernandez, Francisco Hernandez, Estella Apantenco, and Juan Ramirez.

The Mass of Christian Burial for Emilio will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, February 23, 2026 at John's Catholic Church with Father Jacob Greiner as celebrant. The burial will be held in Aspen Grove Cemetery.

Norma Jane "Skip" Gillis, 95, of Burlington, died Tuesday, February 17, 206, at the Klein Center in West Burlington.

Born August 28, 1930, in Burlington, Iowa, she was the daughter of Harold and Flossie Dixon.

She married Edward Gillis on August 28, 1999.

Skip worked for Beckman Dry Cleaners for several years. After her retirement she helped with the Burlington School District lunch program.

She was a member of First Christian Church ~ Disciples of Christ.

She enjoyed bowling and attended many state and national tournaments throughout her life. She loved taking many motorcycle rides with the G.W.R.R.A. and watching Wheel of Fortune.

Survivors include her husband, Edward Gillis; daughter Kim Noble; stepchildren, Kelly Gillis and Pam Gillis; grandchildren Margo and Kyla; great grandchildren Ace, Addaline, Dawson and Rowan; brother George Dixon and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, son Dan Noble, stepson Scott Gillis and two brothers Don Dixon and Jim Dixon.

Norma Jane "Skip" Gillis

Dr. Jerry LeVerne Jochims, 83, of West Burlington, passed away peacefully on February 16, 2026, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics following a brief illness.

Born on December 14, 1942, in Holstein, Iowa, Jerry was the son of LeVerne and Evelyn (Bauer) Jochims. Along with brother Jeff and sister Joelle, he was part of a proud farming family in the close-knit community of Holstein. Jerry graduated high school from the Holstein Community Schools in 1960, enrolling as a music major at the University of South Dakota. Jerry soon had a calling for medicine and was accepted to the University of Iowa Medical School in 1963, receiving his medical degree in 1967. While in medical school, he joined the United States Naval Reserve as a Lieutenant in the Aerospace Medical Institute. Following an internship at McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, from 1967–1968, he was called into Active Duty in 1968 and earned his Designated Naval Flight Surgeon status in 1969. Jerry was always proud of his Naval service and especially fond of his years piloting helicopters as a Flight Surgeon. During his service, Jerry earned the Meritorious Unit Commendation and National Defense Service Medal. Honorably discharged from the Navy in 1969, he served as a Resident and Fellow at the University of Iowa College of Medicine through 1975. Jerry was admitted to the Board of Orthopaedic Surgery in 1976.&nbsp;

In 1975, Jerry founded the first orthopedic practice in Southeast Iowa — Orthopaedic &amp; Reconstructive Surgery Associates, P.C. He was joined a few years later by partner Koert Smith, MD, who would go on to be one of Jerry’s closest lifelong friends. Jerry proudly practiced medicine for almost 40 years, retiring in 2013.&nbsp;

In 1964, Jerry married Anita McKaughan (Fleming). They later divorced. Their 20+ year marriage resulted in four boys — Jeff, Chris, Greg and Mike. In 1989, Jerry married Debra J. DeSpain Phillips, to whom he remained married for almost 37 years until his death.&nbsp;

Raised with a Midwest farmer’s work ethic, Jerry seldom stood still. He was a proud and active ambassador for Southeast Iowa and his adopted hometown of Burlington, at different times serving as a Board Member or Delegate to the Burlington Area Chamber of Commerce, the Burlington Economic Development Corporation, Burlington Downtown Partners, Burlington Bees Baseball Association, Southeastern Community College Board of Advisors, the Iowa Medical Society, and The Board of Councilors for the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, among others. In recent years, Jerry was an active member of First United Methodist Church, where he served in many capacities, but most proudly as a member of the Church Choir. He also enjoyed performing with the Silver Singers.&nbsp;

He was honored with innumerable prestigious civic awards and recognitions over his lifetime, including the 1990 Iowa High School Athletic Association Sports Team Physician of the Year, the 1998 Mississippi Valley Council Boy Scouts of America Distinguished Citizen of the Year, the Professional Baseball Trainers Association 20-year service award in 2006, and the Greater Burlington Partnership Emmy in 2017.

Jerry always prioritized time with his boys and supporting them, his stepchildren Jeffrey Phillips and Melissa (Johnston) Phillips, and his many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Jerry spent countless hours with family and friends at his beloved New Crystal Lake Club, coached many kids’ sports teams (if not always to winning records), and rarely missed a family, school, sporting, or club activity if he was available. There are few, if any, members at the New Crystal Lake Club that won’t recall a fond story with Jerry in a duck blind. &nbsp;

Making the most of his retirement, Jerry returned to his farming roots by taking up the “hobby” of raising elk with friend Henry Bohlen in West Burlington. He continued to actively hunt with his kids and grandkids and remained an active volunteer. His most fond retirement activity, though, may have been traveling the world with wife Debbie, visiting Vietnam, Russia, Peru, the Amazon, Galápagos Islands, taking river cruises through Europe, traveling to Iceland, and many other far-flung destinations, and returning year-after-year to their treasured two weeks on the Big Island of Hawaii, where they ceaselessly hosted friends and family.

Survivors include: wife Debbie; brother Jeff (Lin) of Holstein, IA; sons Jeff (Margo) of Pittsburgh, PA, Chris of Burlington, Greg (Shelley) of Burlington, and Mike of Cypress, TX; two stepchildren, Jeffrey (Annie) Phillips of Burlington, and Melissa (David) Johnston of Falls Church, VA; seventeen grandchildren — Alexa, Ryan, Lauren, Ava, Braden, Madison, Kaydence, Preston, Kylie (Ben) Brown, Brenna, Gabrielle (Matisse) Gaillard, Brant (Machaela), Ryan, Hayden, Riley, Addison, and Eila; nine great grandchildren — Kelton, Banks, Archie, Judge, Iowa, Louise, Nino, Sonny, and Rush; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.&nbsp;

Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, sister Joelle and brother-in-law Jim Johannsen.

The family will receive friends on Friday evening, February 20, 2026, from 5:00 – 7:00 pm at the First United Methodist Church, 421 Washington Street, Burlington, Iowa. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 21, 2026, at 10:00 am, at the First United Methodist Church with Pastor Anthony M. DeVaughn officiating. Private family burial will be in the Jaggar Cemetery of rural Danville, Iowa.&nbsp; A luncheon will be held at the Burlington Golf Club following the funeral services.

In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established for the SCC Foundation and the First United Methodist Church.

 </figure>Dr. Jerry LeVerne Jochims, 83, of West Burlington, passed away peacefully on February 16, 2026, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics following a brief illness.Born on December 14, 1942, in Holstein, Iowa, Jerry was the son of LeVerne and Evelyn (Bauer) Jochims. Along with brother Jeff and sister Joelle, he was part of a proud farming family in the close-knit community of Holstein. Jerry graduated high school from the Holstein Community Schools in 1960, enrolling as a music major at the University of South Dakota. Jerry soon had a calling for medicine and was accepted to the University of Iowa Medical School in 1963, receiving his medical degree in 1967. While in medical school, he joined the United States Naval Reserve as a Lieutenant in the Aerospace Medical Institute. Following an internship at McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, from 1967–1968, he was called into Active Duty in 1968 and earned his Designated Naval Flight Surgeon status in 1969. Jerry was always proud of his Naval service and especially fond of his years piloting helicopters as a Flight Surgeon. During his service, Jerry earned the Meritorious Unit Commendation and National Defense Service Medal. Honorably discharged from the Navy in 1969, he served as a Resident and Fellow at the University of Iowa College of Medicine through 1975. Charles M. “Charlie” Wilton, 73, of Burlington, Iowa, passed away at 3:25 a.m. Saturday, February 14, 2026, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in West Burlington, Iowa.&nbsp;

Charlie was born March 26, 1952, in Colony, Kansas, the son of Justin and Emma Lorena (McGuirk) Wilton. On April 13, 1980, he married Connie Hensley in LaHarpe. She survives.

Mr. Wilton spent his childhood years in Missouri until his family relocated to Blandinsville, Illinois. He was a graduate of Northwestern High School. Following high school, he received his Bachelor's Degree from Eureka College in Eureka, Illinois. He began his working career in the construction industry; working for Hoffmeister Construction in Blandinsville. Later, he worked security at the Iowa State Penitentiary in Fort Madison. Lastly, he retired as a Superintendent of Security from the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant in Middletown.

He enjoyed photography, painting, carpentry and using his carpentry skills to help others. &nbsp;

Besides his wife, survivors include one son: Matt (Wrema) Strauser of North Liberty, Iowa; three grandchildren: Dalton, Lauren, and Justin; two sisters: Justina (Garry) Schultz of Council Bluffs, Iowa, and Cora Foglesong of North Platte, Nebraska; and one brother: Mark (Dotti) Wilton of Oregon.&nbsp;

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters: Kathryn Harding and Zada Wilton and another sister and brother in infancy.&nbsp;

The family will receive friends from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. Saturday, February 28, 2026, at Banks &amp; Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe.&nbsp;
