Wanda M. Buchanan, 94, of Burlington, died Monday, June 13, 2022, at the OakView Nursing Home and Rehabilitation in Burlington.

Born November 6, 1927, in Osceola, IA, she was the daughter of Claude F. and Ethel B. Ashby Clark. On October 18, 1947, she married Carl W. Buchanan in Burlington. He died on September 17, 1992.

She was a 1945 graduate of Burlington High School.&nbsp;

Wanda started work as a clerk at Neissner's, then went to work for Burlington Instrument Co and also tested tubes at Sylvania. Later, she worked as a secretary for Trinity Lutheran Church for 20 years, retiring in 1982.&nbsp;

She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. Wanda was also a member of the Mr. &amp; Mrs. Club, the Ruth Zartman Circle and NARFE (National Alliance of Retired Federal Employees). She enjoyed dancing and playing Bridge, which she played in several Bridge Clubs for over 60 yrs.&nbsp;

Survivors include her son, Randy A. (Muriel) Buchanan of Estes Park, Co.; 2 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; and her caretaker and friend, Cheryl (Dale) Vickstrom of Burlington.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Juanita Connell.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh Crematory.

The Graveside Committal Service for Mrs. Buchanan will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 28, 2022, at Aspen Grove Cemetery with Reverend Ryan Cosgrove officiating.

A memorial has been established for the Des Moines County Humane Society.

Larry Dwayne Talbott, 70, of Burlington, passed away on Sunday, June 19, 2022, after suffering many years from chronic medical conditions.

Born July 18, 1951, in Burlington, IA, he was the son of Lawrence Earl and Shirley Ann Westgate Talbott.

He graduated&nbsp;from Burlington Community High School. He obtained training in auto body painting and repair and this became his hobby for a number of years.

Larry enjoyed spending time with his friends and family.

Survivors include two daughters: Ashley Talbott of Burlington, and Addison (Ethan) Neathery of Orlando, Fla.; his mother, Shirley Talbott of Burlington; two brothers, Steve Talbott Burlington and Gary Talbott of Oquawka, and several nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Larry's memory to Alcoholics Anonymous or Celebrate Recovery.

Tom Turner, 80, of Burlington, died Tuesday, June 14, 2022, at his home.

Born April 4, 1942, on the family farm in southern Illinois, he was the son of Beaumont and Beatrice (Giddis) Turner. He spent 47 wonderful years with his wife, Reva Berrong.&nbsp;

Tom was a diesel mechanic and worked for a truck stop in Marion, Illinois.&nbsp;

He loved watching old westerns, listening to music, fishing and trap shooting. Tom loved his life and especially loved spending time with his family.&nbsp;

Survivors include his wife, Reva Turner; three nephews, Jimmy, Ronnie, and Hal; one niece, Shirley; several great nieces and nephews; two sisters-in-law, Phyllis Turner St. Louis, Mo. and Renna Hawkinson of Burlington; and brother-in-law, Dale (Jan) Berrong of Wever, Ia.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Hal, Ed, and Richard Turner and one niece, Kimberly Turner.&nbsp;

Visitation will be from 3 p.m. until 5 &nbsp;p.m Friday, June 17, 2022 at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home. A short prayer service will conclude the visitation at 5 p.m. officiated by Pastor JudyAnn Morse. Inurnment will be in Berrong Cemetery in Gipsy, Mo. at a later date.

He also liked going to the casino with his son Dusty and listening to his records and CD’s going on road trips with his family.&nbsp; He was an avid Chicago Cubs fan, loved fishing, and sitting outside with family and friends. He would help anyone that needed help.&nbsp; Walter is survived by his two sons; Dusty (Anne) Judd and Andy (Becky) Judd; grandchildren Brianna (Lucky), Jesse, Austin, Jakob, Abbie, Carissa, Cody (Valerie), Tony, Jaime, David, Zach, Malibu and Josh; great grandchildren; Alli, Addi, Haley, Cathy, Izzy, Jayce, Jaichen, Ziva, Lucas, Christian, Brave, Josh, Miguel, Karter, Delanee, Alexis, Aryia and many nieces and nephews.&nbsp; He is preceded in death by his wife Vickie, daughter Sammi and his siblings.&nbsp; A celebration of life will be held on June 25th from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Walter’s residence in Burlington. Marshall, 86, of West Burlington, died Saturday, June 18, 2022, at Danville Care Center.&nbsp; Born June 10, 1936, in Chicago, Illinois, she was the daughter of Lewis and Mary Ethel (Baggs) Schlag.&nbsp;&nbsp; She was a 1955 graduate of Burlington High School and attended the Cook County, Illinois Nursing School from 1956-1959.&nbsp; She married Marvin Leroy Marshall on November 27, 1964 in Burlington. He died August 12, 2017.&nbsp; Joann worked as a Registered Nurse for Burlington Medical Center for over 35 years until her retirement in 1997. She continued with her nursing career from 1997-2012 helping out at various facilities.&nbsp; She was of the Methodist faith.&nbsp; Joann was an avid quilter and loved to sew. She made several bridal dresses and redid upholstery. She was a self-taught “handy-woman” and was never afraid to tackle any challenge. She started and completed many building projects on her own. Joann was a selfless person, very caring and giving and would not think twice about going without something to make sure someone else had what they needed. She loved reading a good romance novel and in her later years, came to appreciate researching the internet.&nbsp; Survivors include her four children; Tim (Carol) Marshall of West Burlington, Eric Marshall and Brenda Dickey both of Burlington and Steve (Rockzann) Marshall of Danville; two step-sons Mark (Sandy) Marshall of Des Moines and Mike (Debbie) Marshall of Stockton, Missouri; 14 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.&nbsp; She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son Robert Marshall, daughter Jennifer Diewold and brother Fred Schlag.&nbsp; The graveside funeral service and interment for Joann will be 2:00 p.m. Thursday, June 23rd at Greenwood Cemetery, West Burlington. Glenna Mehaffy, 91, of Burlington, died Friday, June 17, 2022, at her daughters’ home.&nbsp; Born June 10, 1931, in Burlington, Iowa, she was the daughter of Fred E. and Nellie F. (Purcell) Rowe. She married Lewis Mehaffy on June 24, 1950, in Burlington. He died May 14, 2008.&nbsp; Glenna was an inspector for Champion Spark Plug for over 15 years. She was a member of the UAW Retirees and served as secretary for 13 years. She was an active Democrat and worked for the Gephardt the Democratic nomination for President in 1988 and 2004.&nbsp; Glenna was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She loved drawing, painting, making cards, writing letters, bird watching and feeding birds, music, gardening, canning, reading books. She loved tending to her flower garden, kayaking, traveling, history, cooking, baking and her dog’s LaKoda and Pepper.&nbsp; She was known for her hospitality, HUGS, and her famous apple pies, among other desserts. She loved all holidays and decorations. To the fullest.&nbsp; Glenna was a friend to ALL she met and was remembered saying “PEACE”, while holding up “peace” signs. Most recently she would say in a loud voice I AM WOMAN! HEAR ME ROAR! with her fist in the air.&nbsp; Survivors include her four children; Debbie (Ben) Buechel of New London, Dennis (Paula) Mehaffy of Burlington, Diane (Dan) Buechel of Danville and Kathleen (Duane) Smith of Sperry; nine grandchildren; 25 great grandchildren; two sisters Rosemary (Henry) Luchner of Enterprise, Alabama and Sharon Green of Sandy, Utah.&nbsp; She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and one son Garry Mehaffy.&nbsp; There will be no formal funeral service for Mrs. Mehaffy. According to her wishes, cremation has been accorded and entrusted to the care of Lunning Chapel. Inurnment will be held at a later date in Long Creek Cemetery, rural Danville.

Maxine McNeil, 95, of Middletown died June 15, 2022 at Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center.&nbsp; Born November 26, 1926 at Mercy Hospital in Burlington, she was the daughter or Ray and Ida Maurer Myers.&nbsp; Maxine attended schools in Huron, Danville and Winfield. She earned her BA in teaching from Iowa Weslyan College.&nbsp; Maxine was a teacher for 14 years at rural schools and then Burlington schools. She retired in 1986.&nbsp; On December 4, 1953 Maxine married Keith McNeil at the Middletown Presbyterian Church.&nbsp; Maxine was a Cub Scout leader (den mother), she was involved in the PTA. She served as an elder and deacon at First Presbyterian Church in Middletown where she also taught Bible school and Sunday school and sang in the church choir. Maxine was a member of the square dance club- Circle Square B. She entertained at nursing homes and assisted living homes with her husband and sister Marcie by playing the guitar and singing. Maxine enjoyed sewing, canning, quilting, cooking, traveling and spending time with family.&nbsp; Survivors include her husband, sons Kenneth Hohmbraker of Danville, IA, Randy (Susan) McNeil of Estes Park, CO; granddaughters Trisha Klaus, Patty Hohmbraker, Wendy (Aaron) Bell, Brianna (Bill) Osusky; grandson Ian (Jen) McNeil; nine great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.&nbsp; Maxine was preceded in death by her parents, Ray and Ida Myers, two sisters Arlene Walker and Marcie Noss.&nbsp; The funeral service for Maxine will be Monday, June 20, 2022 at 2:00pm at Simple Gatherings (formerly Middletown Presbyterian Church) with Pastor Jay Clover officiating. Ruth Ann Myers, 73, of Stronghurst, Illinois, died Wednesday, June 15, 2022 at St. Francis O.S.F. Hospital in Peoria, Illinois.&nbsp; Born September 14, 1948, in West Point, Iowa, she was the daughter of Anthony Frank and Clara (Hawkins) Fraise. She married Paul Myers on March 24, 1989. He died May 15, 2003.&nbsp; Ruth served in home health care and cared for hospice patients for many years until her own health began declining. William Joseph Harrington, 86, of Naples, FL, formerly of Burlington, IA,&nbsp; passed away on Tuesday, June 7, 2022 at Gulf Coast Medical Center in Fort Myers, FL.&nbsp;

William (Bill) was born in Waverly, Iowa on December 11, 1935.&nbsp; He was the first child of Joseph and Agnes (Hagarty) Harrington.&nbsp; He grew up on a farm near Plainfield, IA. Bill graduated from Waverly High School in 1954. After high school, he went on to study at Iowa State University before serving in Korea for the U.S. Army. Bill was a dynamic, enterprising hard worker with a vibrant personality. He was involved in sales and management most of his life. Some of his pursuits included owning a supper club and getting his pilot’s license. He retired in 1998 as Vice President of King’s Material, Quad Cities.&nbsp; Bill enjoyed motorhoming and boating and was an active member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary. He received a National Award of Merit for saving 4 lives. Bill married LouAnn Larsen in Cedar Falls, Iowa and they had four children. They later divorced. In 1988, he married Carol Laue Roberts. Bill was an active, faith-filled member of St. Finbarr Catholic Church in Naples, FL;&nbsp; the Knights of Columbus 4th Degree; and the VFW. He also served as a volunteer for Catholic Charities.&nbsp; Bill is survived by his wife, Carol; his children, Karlyn Harrington (Mark) of Naples, FL, Paul Harrington, Port Byron, IL and Susan Soupiset (Shannon) of Iowa City, IA. William Joseph Harrington

Richard Martin Smith, 87, of Burlington, died Tuesday, June 14, 2022 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City.&nbsp; Born April 27, 1935, in Breckenridge, Missouri, he was the son of Fred and Alfa Nell Smith. Richard graduated from Burlington High School in 1953 and received his master’s degree in education from Bradley University in 1961. That same year he married the love of his life Jean Weigel.&nbsp; After graduation, he began his teaching career at Moline. Several years later he started teaching for Burlington. After teaching Science, Industrial Education and Adult Education, he retired after 45 years.&nbsp; Richard had many hobbies including running the clock and attending sporting events, especially those of his grandkids, collecting Lionel trains and Ford tractors and was very passionate about his Edsel car. Richard will be remembered for his love for Cantril cheese, the Chicago Cubs, his “bakka” jokes and his “famous” Dr. Smith peppermints.&nbsp; Survivors include his wife, Jean Smith of Burlington; daughter Renee Fynquist; son Scott (Amy) Smith; grandchildren, Kya, Rosi, Spencer and Parker; great grandson Zayden; brother John; sister Nancy; several nieces and nephews and the many students that touched his life.&nbsp; He is preceded in death by his parents, twin sister Donna Sue and other extended family.&nbsp; The funeral service for Mr. Smith will be 2:00 p.m. Sunday, June 26th at First Christian Church ~ Disciples of Christ. Born November 14, 1949, in Burlington, Iowa, she was the daughter of Kenneth and Lily Powell Taulker. She married Steve Slocum on September 1, 1972, and together they celebrated almost 50 years of marriage. Trudy was a graduate of Burlington High School and earned her Master’s Degree in Clinical Psychology from Western Illinois University. She was a Registered Nurse for many years until her retirement in 2016. She is survived by her husband Steve Slocum of Burlington; her sister-in-law Diane (Ed) Timmerman of Burlington; one daughter Jennifer (Jake) Bailey of West Burlington and four grandchildren, Isabelle Slocum, Brielle Bailey, Bronson Bailey, and Bellamy Bailey; and nieces and nephews. Trudy suffered considerable hardship in her life, including the loss of her son and grandson, severe hearing impairment since birth, a brain tumor, and various other ailments. She never let these hardships rob her of her sparkle. She enjoyed Appaloosa horses, sports cars, going out to eat, and John Wayne westerns. Above all else, she treasured her family, especially her grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, son Brenton Slocum, grandson Jameson Bailey, twin sister Judy Lind, and brothers Jerry Taulker and David Taulker. Born March 9, 1987, in Klamath Falls, Ore., he was the son of Buddy Delaney, Sr. and Heidi Schroeder. On October 31, 2017, he married Jennifer Gardner in Muscatine County.&nbsp;

Zachary was a member of Harmony Bible Church, Burlington Campus. He enjoyed riding his motorcycle, hanging with his two dogs, and cooking and grilling with the neighbor. Zachary also enjoyed gardening, growing things, fishing, and bow hunting.&nbsp;

Toshiko Kawabata "Tosh" Velharticky, 89, of Lone Tree, Colorado, passed away on Sunday, June 5, 2022.&nbsp;

A Celebration of Life ceremony for Toshiko will be held on Saturday, June 18, 2022, at the First Christian Church, 1221 Park Avenue, in Burlington, Iowa. A Visitation will begin at 10:00 am, with a Service at 11:00, followed by a light lunch.

Toshiko was born on April 23, 1933, in Naon, Amami Oshima, Kagoshima, Japan. She was the 9th&nbsp;daughter in a family with 10 girls and one boy (having a male to carry on the family legacy was vitally important). She was athletic, a good student, an independent thinker, and fiercely protective of her little brother, whom she was closest with.&nbsp; After high school, she moved to Okinawa where she worked for several years and eventually met Ken Velharticky, a Navy Seabee, who would become her husband. They were married on September 25, 1962, and moved to Salina, Kansas. Ken and Tosh were blessed with two children, Eileen and Nicholas, and built a beautiful life together, residing in Hutchinson, Kansas, then Warrensburg, Missouri, and eventually Burlington, Iowa, where they lived for 38 years.

Toshiko’s main occupation was homemaker, wife, and mother. She also enjoyed working as a Japanese translator for various international businesses in the Southeastern Iowa region. She loved working with children as a tutor, daycare worker, and Iowa Summer Enrichment Japanese Culture Instructor.

She was an active member of the First Christian Church in Burlington, Iowa.

In October 2019, Toshiko and Ken moved to Lone Tree, Colorado to live closer to their children and grandchild. They joined the Japanese Hope Mountain Family Church shortly after their arrival.

Toshiko is preceded in death by her parents Shinjiro and Matsu Kawabata, and nine of her sisters.

She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Kenneth Velharticky, her daughter and son-in-law, Eileen and Paul Larance, her grandson Garrett Larance, her son Nicholas Velharticky, her sister Nachiko Harada and her brother Kazuaki Kawabata, both still living in Amami Oshima.

Toshiko built a rich, productive, interesting life, filled with so many family members and friends who love her. The mischievous twinkle in her eyes, her unique perspectives, and her love of life and others remain in the hearts of all who cherish her. Aishite Imasu, Toshiko.

Larry Wayne Hemmie,&nbsp;78, of Fort Madison, passed away at 6:32 a.m. on Sunday, June 12, 2022, at Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in West Burlington, IA.&nbsp;&nbsp;He was born on November 7, 1943, in Mt.  </figure>Larry Wayne Hemmie,&nbsp;78, of Fort Madison, passed away at 6:32 a.m. on Sunday, June 12, 2022, at Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in West Burlington, IA.&nbsp;&nbsp;He was born on November 7, 1943, in Mt. Pleasant, to Delbert &amp; Daisy Dietsch Hemmie.&nbsp;&nbsp;He married Julie Ellen Brown on December 31, 1966, in Fort Madison.&nbsp;&nbsp;He worked at Armour Dial, Fort Madison Daily Democrat, and lastly at Woodroffe Sawmill in Denmark.&nbsp;&nbsp;He served in the U.S. Army for seven years during the Vietnam War.&nbsp;&nbsp;He enjoyed watching westerns on T.V., gardening, hunting, and spending time with his grandchildren.&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; Larry is survived by his wife, Julie Hemmie of Fort Madison; one daughter, Brenda (Mark) Bernhardt of Fort Madison; one son, Stephen (Denise) Hemmie of Denmark; six grandchildren, Kayla, Kaci, Karlee, Wesley, Jacob, and Sarah; five great-grandchildren, Ryder, Ivy, Hunter, Remington, and Devyn; one brother, Jerry (Pat) Hemmie of Fort Madison; and one sister, Wanda (James) McGehee of Montrose.&nbsp;&nbsp;He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers, two half-brothers &amp; one half-sister.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; A visitation will be held from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, June 15, 2022, with a funeral service to immediately follow at 10:30 a.m. at King-Lynk Funeral Home &amp; Crematory with Rev. Sharon Elizabeth Schach Unzicker Parrish, 81, of Burlington, died Thursday, June 9, 2022, at her home. Born August 10, 1940, in Burlington she was the daughter of Raymond and Betty Noel Schach. Sharon graduated from Burlington High School in 1959 and she has helped organize many class reunions and the monthly class get-togethers. She married Robert J. Unzicker on November 27, 1963; he died February 22, 1990. She married James L. Parrish on February 17, 1996; he died January 31, 2003. Sharon was an assistant cashier at Farmers &amp; Merchants Bank and Trust and retired after 27 years of service. Sharon was a Member of Burlington Women’s Bowling Association for over 50 years. She was the president of the BWBA from 1992-2012 (20 years) plus held the offices of director and vice president. She was the secretary for the Tuesday &amp; Friday senior leagues for many years. Sharon helped with the merger of both associations in 2017 and was elected 1st vice president and served as VP for one year. She was elected to the BWBA Hall of Fame in 1999. She received the Merit Award in 1993, the 10-year service award from the State Association in 2002, the WBA special award in 2012, and was the first woman to receive the Burlington Area Bowling Association service award in 2014. In 2022 Sharon was an inductee of the Iowa State Bowling Association Hall of Fame. Sharon helped organize the Youth Bowling Program and was a registered volunteer for youth weekly bowling for many years. She enjoyed league bowling, especially the senior leagues that she bowled in after retirement. Besides bowling, Sharon enjoyed reading and Facebook. Most of all she enjoyed time with her grandchildren and attending their activities. Survivors include her three children, Jan (Morgan Brockway) Kemp, James (Jennifer) Unzicker, and Ryan (Nikki) Parrish all of Burlington; six grandchildren, Matthew and Jason Kemp, Cale Unzicker, Alexis and Julia Brockway, and Dalton Howell; two sisters, Patricia Schach of Bradenton, Fla. and Connie (Chuck) Heuvelmann of West Burlington; brother-in-law, Jack Kelly of Burlington; sister-in-law, Linda (Albert) Heitz of Fort Madison; and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Roberta “Bobbie” Peterson, 92, of Burlington, died Thursday, June 9, 2022, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in West Burlington. Born February 28, 1930, in Burlington, she was the daughter of George Arlington and Gertrude (Scott) Elliott, Sr. Bobbie graduated from New London High School in 1947. In 1951 she graduated from the University of Wisconsin at OshKosh with a degree in elementary education. She married Dr. John R. Peterson on August 24, 1952, at her family home in New London. He preceded her in death on April 9, 2016. While Bobbie and John lived in West Branch, she worked at the dental school in Iowa City. When they moved to Georgia, she worked in the office of Ordinance Research in Durham, NC. She also kept the books for Dr. John Peterson’s oral surgery practice in Burlington. Bobbie was a member of the Union Church of LaHarpe, IL. She was a member of Chapter HU of P.E.O., Norman Circle of Kings Daughters, and the Burlington Golf Club. She was also a Sunday school teacher. Her hobbies included water coloring, cross-country skiing, and fly fishing. She was an avid reader and a member of the Fine Arts League and a board member of the Salvation Army. Survivors include her daughters, Maia (Addison) Ingle of Charleston, SC, and Nena (Mark) Flatt of Fishers, Ind.; granddaughter, Elise (Sam) Phillips of San Diego, Calif.; grandson, Arie (Rachel) Flatt of Fishers, Ind.; great-granddaughter, Kaia; nieces and nephews, Scarlett Lunning, Marianne (Tom) Darnall, Julie (Jerry) Anderson, Laurie (David) Lind, Kate (Randy) McKasson, Elliott “Rusty” (Robin) Lunning, Maria (Reverend Michael Kuhn) Elliott, Gayla Elliott, Nancy (Shamil Salah) Elliott, John (Jill) Peterson; several great-nieces and nephews. Born April 21, 1929, in Palmyra, Mo., she was the daughter of Walter and Selma Lucas Drebenstedt. On March 29, 1953, she married Donald Abner Thie in Burlington. He passed on February 1, 2022.

She was a 1947 graduate of Sperry High School. Following graduation from high school, she attended College of Commerce in Burlington for three years.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Genevieve worked as a legal secretary for Ford Law Offices in Burlington for 30 years.&nbsp;

She was a member of Zion United Church of Christ. She was a past member of St. John's of Flint River Township Church where she was a Sunday School teacher, sang in the choir, and was also involved in many church organizations.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Survivors include daughter, Deb (Dave) Stratton of Sperry, two grandchildren, Danielle (Matt) Huddleston of Burlington and Jason (Erin Bradley) Stratton of West Burlington, and three great-grandchildren, Christian and Ian Huddleston, and Jaxon Stratton.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, Lorraine Rice, and one brother, Stanley Drebenstedt.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Sylvia Jean Lange, 79, of Fort Madison, died at 9:36 AM Tuesday, June 7, 2022, at the OakView Nursing Home and Rehabilitation in Burlington.

Sylvia Jean Andersen Lange was born on June 19, 1942, in St. Charles, Ill., and lived in Wayne, Ill. until the age of 5 when her parents moved to a farm in Cloverdale, Ill., and then to Villa Park when Sylvia was a junior in high school. She lived with her parents until she married James F. Lange on June 9, 1962.

She is survived by her husband, James Floyd Lange, a son, Dana (wife Dana) Lange of Denver, CO, two daughters, DeAnne (husband Dave) Bates of Metro Detroit, MI, and Debb (husband Danny) Pataska of Miles, IA, a step-son, James Lemont of Cedar Rapids, IA, a sister Janice Schlak of El Paso, TX, and a brother, Bruce Andersen of Sarasota, FL. She is also survived by 17 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren. She will be dearly missed by all her family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Julian Jens Andersen and Ione Enola (Hunerjager) Andersen, and an infant son, David Dean Lange.

Sylvia loved people and had a servant's heart. She worked behind the scenes and wanted no glory for what she did. Sylvia always served as secretary to her husband in every church in which he ministered, and helped many people with practical needs along the way. Ladies from several different churches were still calling her nearly forty years later. You might say that people from many places in the world have a special place in their hearts for Sylvia.

When her children were grown she went to work as secretary of the First Baptist Church of Muscatine, IA for twelve years. She also served as Administrative Assistant/Communications Specialist for five years at CEAP, which is a non-profit social agency in Brooklyn Park, Minn. She also did respite care for two of her granddaughters and loved every minute of it.

Sylvia's children, grandchildren, &amp; great-grandchildren were the joy of her life. She loved each one of them dearly and would do anything for them! When asked where she wanted to go on vacation, she always said she wanted to be with her family!

I can see Sylvia now... she has no pain, she can walk, and even run if she wants to.&nbsp; And, if Sylvia could talk to you now, she would ask you if you knew for certain that you are going to heaven when you die. Because that's where she is, and she wants to see each and every one of you again!&nbsp; If you could see her now you wouldn't ask her to come back-she's with Jesus!

Visitation will be from noon until 7 p.m. with the family to receive friends from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. Thursday, June 23, 2022, at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home in Burlington, IA.

The Funeral Service for Mrs. Lange will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 24, 2022, at First Baptist Church, Fort Madison, with Pastor Dean Graber officiating. Burial will be in Claypoole Cemetery. Jacquelyn Chubb, 81, of Burlington, died Saturday, Nov. 13, 2021, at Blessing Hospital in Quincy, Ill.

Born Dec. 13, 1939, in Los Angeles, Calif., she was the daughter of Jack Henry and Dorotha Jane Griffith Handrich. She married James Arnold Chubb; they later divorced.

She graduate from Burlington High School in 1958 and later from Southeastern Community College with her Associate of Arts degree.

Jacquelyn worked at Southeastern Community College as the office manager for the Dean of Instruction for about 25 years, retiring Dec. 12, 2021. She then volunteered at Hopefully Yours and GRMC Heritage Medical Supply. She was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church, where she was a member of the church council, worship and music committee, book club, and church choir.&nbsp;

Survivors include one daughter, Julie Chubb, and one son, Jerry Chubb, both of Burlington, and one sister, Linda Garmoe.

A memorial has been established for Bethany Lutheran Church.

Upon her request, she has been cremated. A celebration of life will be held Saturday, June 25 at Bethany Lutheran Church, 2515 Madison Ave, Burlington. The Rev. Paul Hermansen will preside. A luncheon will follow in the church fellowship hall. All are welcome to come and share memories.

Jacquelyn "Jackie" Chubb

Marvin John Gingrich, 82, of Denmark, died at 8:05 am Sunday, June 5, 2022, at his home.&nbsp; He was born February 24, 1940, in Iowa, a son of Frank J. and Lucille Staff Gingrich.&nbsp; On June 26, 1960, he married Kay Raid in Denmark.&nbsp;

He attended Sawyer Grade School through the 8th&nbsp;grade and then graduated from the Denmark Academy High School in 1958.&nbsp; He was a farmer.&nbsp; He attended the Denmark Congregational United Church of Christ.

Marvin is survived by his wife, Kay; one brother, Harold Gingrich of Woodland Hills, California; one sister, Irene Hoskins of Denmark, Iowa; numerous nieces and nephews,&nbsp; adopted grandchildren: Morgan Bobb (Jake) Swanson and Zach (Aubree) Bobb, and numerous friends.&nbsp; He was preceded in death by his parents and two sons, Troy and Tod.

Marvin Gingrich

Bill Lantz, 81, of Kellerton, passed away on June 2, 2022, at Des Moines Methodist Hospital. Bill was a very kind and thoughtful man. He valued the time he spent with his family and friends. He was a quiet, private man with a sly sense of humor. He will be truly missed.

Billie Lee Lantz was born on October 20th, 1940, to Vernon and Vera Lantz, at their home in Ringgold County.&nbsp; Bill spent his childhood living and enjoying farm life in Ringgold County. Bill spoke fondly of helping his parents, grandparents, and other family members with the different aspects of farm life.&nbsp; Bill spent several summers of his youth working for neighboring farmers and at his Aunt Melrose’s strawberry farm in Illinois and assisted his Uncle Lloyd in Colorado with various road crew tasks for the Alaska pipeline.

Bill attended the Beaconsfield School until it closed in 1958. He graduated from Mount Ayr Community High School in 1959. On August 7th, 1960, he was united in marriage to Verlea Stewart. To this union, three daughters were born: Denise Ann, Tanya Deneen, and Cherri Renee.

Bill and Verlea started their life journey farming but exchanged it for a life in the city. Bill attended Indian Hills Community College to obtain a degree in Computer Sciences. After graduating from his program, Bill accepted a position at a Burlington Bank and Trust in Burlington, Iowa working with their computers. As his family grew, Bill chose to go to work for J.I. Case starting in the office as a computer tech in Burlington. He came to realize that welding would bring in more income for his family so Bill continued to work at Case as a welder and a union representative until his retirement.&nbsp; After his retirement, Bill and Verlea sold their home and traveled the country revisiting favorite family vacation spots and discovering new places. Bill and Verlea spent many of their summers working as park attendants for various campgrounds and wintering in Texas.

After Verlea passed in 2014, Bill planned to spend the rest of his life in his Burlington apartment watching sports and living a very quiet life. Fortunately, his plans changed after reconnecting with a former H.S. classmate, Pauline “Sally” Woollums. After connecting with Sally, Bill gained a few more kids: Garey (Rhonda) Woollums, Brenda (John) Lillard, Steven (Deborah) Woollums, Laura (Michael) Gilman; along with the entire Woollums family.

Bill and Sally have spent the last several years enjoying each other’s company. Attending auctions and collecting various treasures, traveling to different places, and visiting with family and friends.&nbsp; They enjoyed being together doing the ordinary day-to-day things, conversing with each other about the places and people they both knew, and just being there for each other. Bill and Sally made a home together in Kellerton.

Left behind to mourn his passing is his companion, Sally Woollums; his daughters, Denise Nelson (Glenn), Tanya Shanstrom (Todd), Cherri James (Jon); his grandchildren: Lacey (JR) Henderson, Kendra (Steve) Smith, Colton (Stacy) Shanstrom, Zachary (Mickie) James, Shyanne (Paul) Shanstrom/Redmond; his great-grandchildren: Johnny, Riley, Sadie, Kolbie, Finnley, Nellie and Griffin; his sisters: Sue Jones, Mary Kay Best, and Bonnie French; the Stewart family, the Woollums family, numerous nieces and nephews, and many friends.

The family will receive friends at the Ellston Methodist Church, Ellston, on Saturday, June 11 from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. with a memorial service starting at 10:30 a.m. A luncheon will follow in the fellowship hall. Memorials are to&nbsp;the National Kidney Foundation,&nbsp; American Diabetes Association, and US Army Corps of Engineers-Coralville Dam Complex Campgrounds. Armstrong Funeral Home in Mount Ayr is in charge of the arrangements.

Bill Lantz

Frankie Marie Allen, 72, of Burlington, died on Saturday, June 4, 2022, at her home.

Born November 22, 1949, in Rocky Mount, N.C., she was the daughter of Frank and Mary Lee Grant Allen.&nbsp;

She grew up in Scranton, Pa., and went to Washington Elementary School and Technical High School.

Frankie is survived by her three children, Robin (Craig) Rainey of Belleville Ill., Vincent Allen of Iowa City, and Michelle (Richard) Seider of Mcdonough, Ga.; three grandchildren, Craig Rainey Jr. of Germany, Brittany (Denton) Beard of Bettendorf, and Jarryd (Janet) Seider&nbsp; Mcdonough, Ga.; six great-grandchildren, Aaliyah and Josiah Rainey, Aamira, Akila, and Nalani Beard, and Juliana Seider; and several nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by two sisters, Betty Raye McCampbell and Bobbie Jo Morgan, two brothers, Frank Allen Jr. and Irving Allen, and one son, Robert Tyrone Allen.

A celebration of life will be held for Ms. Allen on Saturday, June 25 at 1 p.m. at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home with the Rev. Shane McCampbell officiating. A time of food and fellowship will be held in the community room at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home following the service.

Cremation has been entrusted to the Prugh Crematory.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice.

Frankie Allen

Virginia Mary McCartney, 101, formerly of Burlington, IA died at 1:51 p.m., Saturday, June 4, 2022, at the Johnson Assisted Living in Carol Stream, Ill.

Born July 21, 1920, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Herbert F. and Vala G. Chambers Schwartz. On June 17, 1950, she married Hugh A McCartney in Burlington, Iowa. He died on May 6, 1977.

She was a graduate of Burlington High School. She later graduated from Iowa Wesleyan College and received her degree in education.

Virginia taught elementary education in the Burlington School District for over 18 years.

She was a lifelong member of Trinity Lutheran Church.

Survivors include her daughters, Molly A. (Larry) Klowden of Elmhurst, Ill., and Jane V. (Cletus) Coughlin of Chesterfield, Mo.; three granddaughters; Carrie (Tom Behan) Coughlin of St. Louis, Mo., Katherine (Jude) McKenna of Park Ridge, Ill., Sarah (Matt) Kahovec of Elmhurst, Ill.; and three great-grandchildren.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Helen Schwartz.

The graveside committal service for Mrs. McCartney will be 11 a.m. Saturday, June 11 at Aspen Grove Cemetery with the Rev. Ryan Cosgrove officiating. Those wishing to attend the service can meet at the Prugh Funeral Service, Downtown prior to the service for a procession to the gravesite.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for Trinity Lutheran Church.
