James W. Rollins, 66, of Burlington, died on Sunday, July 21, 2024, at his home.

Born on June 19, 1958, in Burlington, he was the son of William Rollins and Marian Remaly. On Oct. 25, 1980, he married Tina Marie Peterson in Burlington.

James owned an operated Wrecker Express Towing, where he retired from after selling the business. Earlier in life you could find James working on cars in the garage, he loved doing bodywork. Any opportunity he was given to go camping he would go. He loved watching western television shows especially enjoyed Gun Smoke while drinking his Pepsi. He shared his birthday with his son in-law and every year they celebrated their birthdays and Father’s Day with a huge family cookout. Most of all James loved spending time with his family.

He is survived by his wife Tina; two children: Brandon (Pam) Rollins and Janelle (John) Lang all of Burlington; a niece who was like a daughter Taylor Peterson of Burlington; three grandchildren: Alyssa and Preston Lang and Madison Rollins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and two grandchildren: Alexander and Jacob Lang.

Per his wishes cremation has been accorded and entrusted to the care of Lunning Chapel.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

William Luzadder, 64, of Winfield, died Monday, July 22, 2024.

Born May 6, 1960, in Chicago, Ill., he was the son of William Frederick and Rose Luzadder.

William worked as a special education teacher.

William was a fun loving and grateful man. &nbsp;He loved his church, First Baptist Church of Danville, and the grace and fellowship were very important to him. &nbsp;He also never passed up a potluck. &nbsp;William was also known to be a sports fanatic. William was very strong-willed. &nbsp;He never let life dampen his spirits and always tried to keep a smile on his face. &nbsp;He loved talking with people and always looked forward to a visit from a friend. &nbsp;His family and animals were everything to him and he loved spending time with this grandson. William's passing leaves an emptiness, but his smile and memory continue to provide comfort to all who love him.

Family include his daughter, Rose (Shawn) Weaver of Winfield; two sisters, Cindy Williams of Missouri and Hope (Kenneth) Hillyer of Middletown; brother, David B. (Linda) Luzadder of Ill.; grandson, Shawn Weaver, Jr.; niece, Chrystal (Aaron) Jackson; nephew, Kenneth J. Hillyer; and numerous cousins.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Julia Luzadder; parents, Rose and William Luzadder; sister, Margaret Suggett; and brother, Frank K. Lazadder.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh Crematory.

Mark Allen Wemmie, 65, of West Burlington, died Saturday, July 20, 2024, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born Dec. 27, 1958, in Burlington, he was the son of Albert and Alberta Schulz Wemmie. On Nov. 6, 1982, he married Mary Ellen Schemmel.&nbsp;

Mark was a kind soul. He was a big sports fan. He loved watching his sons play when they were younger; and never passed an opportunity to root for the Bears, Cubs and Cyclones. He liked music and woodworking and would make absolutely beautiful pieces. Mark enjoyed camping. &nbsp;Moreover, he loved spending time with the grand kids and his family. His kindness will be missed, but his memory will be carried by all who love him.

Mark's family include his cherished wife of 41 years, Mary Wemmie; two sons, Matthew Hallie Wemmie of Des Moines, and Brian (Jennifer Benjamin) Wemmie of Coralville; four grandchildren, Henry, Lorelei, Harrison, and Emerson; brother, Donald (Mary) Wemmie; two sisters, Linda &nbsp;(William) Bozwell and Donna (Steve) Beyer.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Keith.

The funeral service for Mark will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 24, 2024, at Calvary Baptist Church (2710 West Avenue, Burlington) with Pastor Simeon Counterman officiating. &nbsp;Mark's family will receive guests at the church from 10 to 11 a.m. before the service. &nbsp;Mark will be laid to rest at Aspen Grove Cemetery. Robert Hiram "Bob" Hoxie, 88, of Burlington, died unexpectedly Saturday, July 20, 2024, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born Dec. 23, 1935, in Waterloo, he was the son of Ralph Hiram "Hi" and Doris Madeline Hazen Hoxie. On June 18, 1960, he married Patricia Elaine Davies in Burlington.&nbsp; She died Dec. 11, 2011. On Nov. 17, 2012, he married Deborah (Debbie) Wagner Von Behren at Bethany Lutheran Church.

Bob worked in life insurance and investments representing CIGNA and Transamerica Life Companies holding professional designation's of CLU and ChFC.&nbsp; His second career was in transportation with Burlington Trailways starting as a driver and then Director of Safety Training and Public Funding.&nbsp; He retired May 1, 2017 and then worked part-time at Burlington Trailways until Oct. 30, 2022.

He was a 1954 graduate of Roosevelt High School Des Moines and a 1958 graduate of the University of Denver.&nbsp;

He was a U.S. Air Force Veteran, serving with the Air Defense Command from 1958 until 1962 when he was honorably discharged with the rank of Captain.

He was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church. He was a Major with the Civil Air Patrol, and was an avid pilot holding aeronautical ratings of Commercial Pilot and Instructor Pilot.&nbsp; He was a former member and Past President of the Burlington Kiwanis Club.

Survivors include; wife Debbie; one son, Logan (Stephanie) Hoxie of Cedar Rapids; one daughter, Jill (Michael) Harmon of Columbia Falls, Mont.; two grandsons, Mason&nbsp; (Megan) Hoxie of Urbandale, and Max Hoxie of Des Moines; one step-daughter April Gerst of West Burlington; one step-granddaughter Adley Gerst and one step-grandson Asher Gerst, both of West Burlington; one sister, Linda Reeder of La Valle, Wis.; and several nieces and nephews.

Besides his first wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Mary Hamilton and Mabel Anne Hoxie.

As per Bob's request cremation has been accorded.

Visitation will be from 12 to 7 p.m. with the family to receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, July 25, 2024, at Prugh Funeral Service, 3940 Division Street.

The memorial service for Mr. Hoxie will be 10 a.m. Friday, July 26, 2024, at Bethany Lutheran Church with Pastor Misha McFarland-Pollock officiating. Full military honors will be rendered by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard. Inurnment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. A time of food and fellowship will be held at the church following the burial.

Robert Hiram "Bob" Hoxie

Kenneth William McNeil, 97, of Middletown, passed away peacefully on July 16 at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House.

Ken was born Dec. 31, 1926, in Burlington, to Clarence and Edith McNeil. He was raised, with his twin brother, on a farm in the Iowa Ordinance Plant. Ken graduated from Burlington High School in 1944 and joined the Army in 1945 and served until the war ended. He then started a 50-year career at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant until his retirement in 1996.

Ken married his wife, Elsie Mae Engstrom, Jan. 22, 1966 and together they made their home in Middletown until her death Nov. 10, 1999. They spent several winters in Arizona. Ken was active in the Middletown Presbyterian Church from the time he was a child until it closed in 2016.

Ken loved to bird hunt and fish with his brother Keith. He rode his bicycle up into his 90s to the post office to get his mail and to visit his brother who lived nearby. He loved bluegrass music and went to “Prime Time” for church suppers and music. He and his brother traveled the countryside to listen to bluegrass music. He also loved Old Threshers and square dancing and mushroom hunting.

Ken was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Elsie Mae and sister-in-law Maxine.

He is survived by his twin brother, Keith McNeil of Middletown; four nephews Randy (Susan) McNeil, Kenny Hohmbraker, Tom (Cindy) Engstrom and Doug (Denise) Engstrom; one niece Pam Maupin; Great Nephew Caleb McNeil Engstrom as well as several other great nieces and nephews as well as several great-great nieces and nephews and special friends Karen &amp; Kirk Soukup and sons.

The family very much appreciated all his caregivers.

The service for Kenneth will be 2 p.m. Saturday, July 20 at Simple Gathering (Old Presbyterian Church in Middletown) with Pastor Simeon Counterman officiating. The family will receive friends from 12:30 p.m. until the time of service.

Leo Wayne Scott, 91, of Burlington, formerly of Sperry, died Monday, July 15, 2024, at his home at Addington Place of Burlington.

Born Feb. 9, 1933, in Sperry, he was the son of Edmund and Josephine Hilda Scott. He married Ruby Sutcliffe on Feb. 12, 1953. She died Oct. 27, 2020.

Leo was a life long farmer and worked as a Supervisor for the US Gypsum plant, retiring after 30 years.

He was a member of Harmony Bible Church and a lifetime follower of Jesus Christ.

Leo lived for duck and geese hunting, and was a perfectionist when it came to his lawn, as he thoroughly enjoyed mowing the grass. He enjoyed woodworking and fishing, but more than anything loved his time spent with his family. He was a comedian and had a great sense of humor.

He is survived by his three children; Sheila (Jim) Flietner of Burlington, Alan (Julie) Scott of Bloomfield, and Monte (Kathleen) Scott of West Point; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Ruby, son Troy Scott, grandson Dallas Scott, granddaughter Kerrie Scott, brother Paul and sister Rosemary.

The memorial funeral service for Leo will be 3 p.m. Sunday, July 21 at Lunning Chapel. Pastor Dan Dingus will officiate. Burial will be held in Kingston Cemetery, rural Kingston, at a later date. The family will receive friends from 1:30 p.m. until the time of service on Sunday.

Judith Rae Johnson, 64, of Burlington, died Wednesday, July 17, 2024, at Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born Aug. 17, 1959, she was the daughter of Robert Kenneth and Betty Jean Becker McGill. She graduated from Mediapolis High School. She married Jeff Johnson in Gladstone, Ill. They later divorced.

Judy was a full-time receptionist at Rock Valley Physical Therapy and worked at Deery Brothers as a night receptionist. Judy was a die-hard Green Bay Packers fan. She had a quick wit and offered unfiltered comments. She loved her three cats, friends and her family.

Survivors include her children Dustin (Jessica) Johnson and Samantha Johnson both of Burlington; two grandchildren Tyler and Jaidin; sister Diane (John) Boyd of Burlington; brother Daryl (Metta) McGill of Huxley, Iowa; nephew Matthew Wood of Burlington, niece Brandi Shaw of Burlington, nephew Zach Boyd of Burlington, niece Katie Boyd of Mediapolis, nephew Ethan McGill of Huxley and several great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and nephew Jacob Boyd.

Judy was an organ donor and will continue to give the gift of life to countless others through her generous donation. Per her wishes, cremation has been entrusted to the care of Lunning Chapel.

The visitation for Judy will be 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, July 24 at Lunning Chapel followed by the memorial service with Reverend Shane McCampbell officiating. Inurnment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery at a later date.

In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established for the Des Moines County Humane Society for cat medical expenses.

Dorothy Hoffman, 95, of Burlington, died July 16, 2024 at Addington Place.

Born May 24, 1929, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Alfred and Nellie Hand Shofe. Dorothy graduated from Burlington High School. She married Warren Hoffman on Oct. 11, 1947. They were married 61 years until his death on Oct. 17, 2008. Dorothy was a member of Divine Mercy Parish.

Dorothy was one of the founders of Keystone Products, she was a broker and realtor for Riverfront Realty and she owned Dee-Mer Interior Decorating. Dorothy loved her family and cooking for them. She enjoyed going on the annual Christmas shopping trips with her daughters, daughter-in-law and granddaughters. She loved going to Christmas Mass with the whole family. Dorothy like to play bridge with her friends, video poker, and go dancing in her younger days. She was always giving to others.

Survivors include her children Mike Hoffman of Burlington, Dan (Joyce) Hoffman of West Burlington, Kathy Zimmer of Sioux City and Suzanne (Rob) Russell of Burlington; 10 grandchildren Andrea Kindorf, Meredith VanSyckle, Marcie Holzwarth, Robbie Zimmer, Traci Hoffman, Tim Hoffman, J.D. Hoffman, Christina Russell, Austin Russell, Zach Russell and 16 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Warren, her parents, brother Dick Shofe, sister Katherine Masters, granddaughter Stacie Zimmer.

Tim “Toad” Wilson, 76, of Burlington, died Sunday, July 14, 2024, at Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice, West Burlington. Born on Sept. 25, 1947, Mr. Wilson was the son of Earl and Pauline Grant Wilson. The family moved to Burlington in 1956.

Toad graduated from Burlington High School in the Great Class of 1965 and attended Southeastern Community College; Methodist College in Fayetteville, North Carolina; and University California in Berkeley, Calif. He lived in California for 17 years. He also lived in Florida, North Carolina, Chicago, Minneapolis, Boulder, Indiana, Iowa, and Arizona. Wanderlust, I guess, had Tim move 26 times. Whoa Nellie! He doesn’t need maps anymore.

He started in the swimming pool and solar industries in 1978. He moved to Arizona in 1996, and remained in the solar and swimming pool industries and did pet sitting. “Pet Whisperer”, also known for his love of pets. A few years ago, he tallied 23 cats, 12 dogs and 3 toads from the cradle to grave. Starting in 2000, he named his pets after his parents, Pauline and Earl – always two at a time, or more and helped raise six kids. All are part-time pet sitters in four states.

Survivors include one sister, Vicki Villarreal, of Mundelein, Ill. and one nephew, Paul Villarreal, of Illinois and several cousins. In accordance with Mr. Wilson’s wishes, his body has been cremated. Graveside committal will take place in the family lot in New Sharon, Iowa.

In lieu of flowers, you may make a contribution to The Humane Society of the U.S. or Progressive Animal Welfare Society (PAW).

Johnny was born Feb. 26, 1959 in Washington, Iowa, the son of John C. and Marjorie McKay Duttweiler.&nbsp; Johnny was a beautiful soul with a smile that would consistently win folks over.&nbsp; He had a passion for life.&nbsp; He loved music and his guitar.&nbsp; He liked chocolate milkshakes and French fries, and spending time drawing.&nbsp; Johnny also loved the Boy Scouts, Special Olympics and bowling.&nbsp; More over he loved fishing and spending time with his family.&nbsp; His sense of humor and infectious laugh will be missed by all who loved him, but his memory will live in our hearts forever.

Johnny’s family includes his cherished mother, Marjorie; siblings, Deborah (the late Ira) Stewart of Burlington, Laura (Kim) DeBower of Apopka, Fla., and Kenneth Duttweiler of Burlington; several cousins; and three generations of nieces and nephews.

Sadly, Johnny is preceded in death by his father; grandparents, aunts and uncles.

Sally Ann James, 48, of West Burlington, died Friday, July 12, 2024, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born July 14, 1975, in Cape Girardeau, Mo., she was the daughter of Elvin Eugene and Connie Sue Roberts James. On April 17, 2014, she married Curtis James in Burlington.&nbsp;

Sally worked for the Missouri Popcorn Factory.

She was a member of the NRA. She loved animals and collecting weapons, especially fancy knives and blades. She enjoyed watching YouTube and her favorite YouTuber was "Lips".

Survivors include her mother, Connie Sue James of Jackson, Mo.; her husband; two sons, Robert James of Iowa and Gabriel James of Burlington; grandchild, Lillie James of Texas; and two brothers, Donald James of Boulder, Colo., and Gary James of Tenn.

She was preceded in death by her father, Elvin James and her sister, Susie Holstein.

The celebration of life for Sally will be held at a later date.

John Carl Duttweiler, 85, of West Burlington, died at 5:57 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 30, 2021, at his home in West Burlington, surrounded by his family.

Born April 18, 1936, in Iowa City, he was the son of J. Hubert and S. Kathryn Kracaw Duttweiler. On Oct. 6, 1956, he married Marjorie Lilliann McKay in Ottumwa.&nbsp;

He graduated from Mount Pleasant Community School in 1954. John later attended an online Tech School for Diesel Mechanics. He was a certified coach through SCC and an SCCA Nationally Licensed Corner Worker. He worked at various race tracks, including Daytona, Sebring, and Blackhawk.&nbsp;

He served in the U.S. Army Reserves from 1954 until 1957 in the Cactus Patch Battery C, 438AAA Battalion, 103rd CasCon.

John was a farmer and also a diesel mechanic with Churchill Truck Lines from 1964 to 1994.

John attended Calvary Baptist Church in Burlington. When his grandchildren were younger, John enjoyed his time being an assistant coach for Junior High Football and Basketball at James Madison Middle School for about six years. He also enjoyed being outdoors and especially liked hunting, fishing, golfing, woodworking, painting, traveling and spending winters in Texas and Florida with his wife. One of John's biggest loves was music and he was an excellent lead guitar player. He was proud to be inducted into America's Old-Time Country Music Hall of Fame located in Anita, IA.

Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Marjorie Lilliann Duttweiler; four children, Deborah Stewart of Burlington, John Neil Duttweiler of Burlington, Laura (Kim) DeBower of Apopka, Fla., Kenneth (Tammy McElroy) Duttweiler of Burlington; seven grandchildren; twenty-five great-grandchildren; two great great-grandchildren; one niece and two nephews; and many close friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Charles Duttweiler; and son-in-law, Ira Stewart.

John graciously donated his body to the University of Iowa for scientific research.

Born June 21, 1950, in Fairfield, he was the son of Otto Frank and Violet Mae Pickett Burk. On April 6, 1978, he married Joyce Arlene Bradshaw in Ottumwa.&nbsp;

He graduated from Cardinal High School in Eldon in 1968.&nbsp;

He was a U.S. Marine Veteran, serving during the Vietnam War from January 29, 1969 until October 8, 1970. He received the National Defense Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, RVN Cross of Gallantry and a Combat Action Ribbon.

Jerry worked for Iowa Malleable and Dexter Foundry.

He enjoyed cutting wood, listening to Rock and Roll, drinking coffee and was an excellent story teller. Most of all, Jerry loved doing anything with his grandchildren.&nbsp;

Survivors include his wife, Joyce Burk of Burlington; three children, Lora (Laura Mickey) Burk of Burlington, Sarah (Zach) Hamilton of NE, and Bryan (Becky) Burk of SD; six grandchildren, Adam George, Britney Burk, Owen George, Eli Hamilton, Otto Hamilton, and Audrey Mickey-Burk; sister, Vickie Housh of Mt Pleasant and honorary family, Donald Mickey, II.

Jerry L. Burk

Jennie Lee Gustison, 88, of Oakville, died July 10, 2024. She was born on October 8, 1935, in Northfield, to Ross and Henrietta Hennings Wilson. Jennie was a lifelong resident of the Oakville area. She had fond memories as a young girl of ice skating, roller skating, singing, and having many get-togethers with her girlfriends. Jennie graduated from Oakville High School in 1954.

On New Year’s Eve of 1954, Jennie married the love of her life and husband of nearly 70 years, Paul Gustison. Together they farmed in rural Wapello and Oakville for 58 years, from 1954 to 2012. She was the model farm wife and homemaker, working alongside Paul to plant and harvest crops, bale hay, and raise free-range hogs and cattle. She also worked outside the home at Thatcher’s, Tri-State Envelope Factory, and the Hopewellian Mounds at Toolesboro where she shared her love of Louisa County History.

Jennie’s family meant the world to her. She and Paul raised three daughters who they cherished dearly: Cynthia Jo, Robin Reneé, and Kimberly Dawn. Jennie was a fun-loving grandmother and enjoyed creating memories and telling stories to her four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Christmas, sledding, summer picnics, and weenie roasts were some of the many family memories out at the farm. In addition to raising her family, taking care of the home, and farming, Jennie enjoyed many hobbies. She was well-known for her home-cooked meals. She enjoyed mowing and gardening, fishing and mushroom hunting, and family genealogy. Jennie and Paul enjoyed socializing with their many friends. She was a member of the Good Will Club. In her later years, Jennie became a whiz with technology, watching cooking videos on her iPad and connecting with classmates on Facebook. Jennie also had several pets throughout her lifetime that she loved dearly. She loved the Lord and was a member of the Oakville Methodist Church.

Those left to remember and love Jennie include her love of nearly 70 years Paul, three daughters Cyndie (Danny) Evans of Muscatine, Robin (Steve) Smith of Wapello, and Kimberly (Eddie) Fisher of Wapello; four grandchildren: Betsy (Marty) Duffy, Andy (Megan) Evans, Lorin Fisher, and Lydia Fisher; four great-grandchildren: Lily, Hank, Danny, and Grace; and her brother Warren (Patsy) Wilson of New London (a veteran of the Cuban Missile Crisis).

Jennie will be welcomed to Heaven by her parents; a son in infancy; and her brothers (all World War II veterans) Valdo “Sonny” Alderson, Louis “Buddy” Alderson (a prisoner of war), and Norville “Tom” Alderson.&nbsp;

As Jennie entered Heaven, she was serenaded by a special rendition of “Welcome to My World” by Eddie Arnold and Jim Reeves. “Lay Your Head on My Pillow,” is the special song for Paul to remember Jennie until he joins her in Heaven.

Family and friends may visit at Prugh Funeral Service, 3940 Division Street, on Monday, July 15 from 9 to 10:30 a.m.

Jennie will be laid to rest at Aspen Grove Cemetery in Burlington. Graveside services will be held on Monday, July 15 at 11 a.m.&nbsp;

 </figure>Jennie Lee Gustison, 88, of Oakville, died July 10, 2024. She was born on October 8, 1935, in Northfield, to Ross and Henrietta Hennings Wilson. Jennie was a lifelong resident of the Oakville area. She had fond memories as a young girl of ice skating, roller skating, singing, and having many get-togethers with her girlfriends. Jennie graduated from Oakville High School in 1954.On New Year’s Eve of 1954, Jennie married the love of her life and husband of nearly 70 years, Paul Gustison. Together they farmed in rural Wapello and Oakville for 58 years, from 1954 to 2012. She was the model farm wife and homemaker, working alongside Paul to plant and harvest crops, bale hay, and raise free-range hogs and cattle. She also worked outside the home at Thatcher’s, Tri-State Envelope Factory, and the Hopewellian Mounds at Toolesboro where she shared her love of Louisa County History.Jennie’s family meant the world to her. She and Paul raised three daughters who they cherished dearly: Cynthia Jo, Robin Reneé, and Kimberly Dawn. Jennie was a fun-loving grandmother and enjoyed creating memories and telling stories to her four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Christmas, sledding, summer picnics, and weenie roasts were some of the many family memories out at the farm. In addition to raising her family, taking care of the home, and farming, Jennie enjoyed many hobbies. She was well-known for her home-cooked meals. She enjoyed mowing and gardening, fishing and mushroom hunting, and family genealogy. Jennie and Paul enjoyed socializing with their many friends. She was a member of the Good Will Club. In her later years, Jennie became a whiz with technology, watching cooking videos on her iPad and connecting with classmates on Facebook. Jennie also had several pets throughout her lifetime that she loved dearly. She loved the Lord and was a member of the Oakville Methodist Church.Those left to remember and love Jennie include her love of nearly 70 years Paul, three daughters Cyndie (Danny) Evans of Muscatine, Robin (Steve) Smith of Wapello, and Kimberly (Eddie) Fisher of Wapello; four grandchildren: Betsy (Marty) Duffy, Andy (Megan) Evans, Lorin Fisher, and Lydia Fisher; four great-grandchildren: Lily, Hank, Danny, and Grace; and her brother Warren (Patsy) Wilson of New London (a veteran of the Cuban Missile Crisis).Jennie will be welcomed to Heaven by her parents; a son in infancy; and her brothers (all World War II veterans) Valdo “Sonny” Alderson, Louis “Buddy” Alderson (a prisoner of war), and Norville “Tom” Alderson.&nbsp;As Jennie entered Heaven, she was serenaded by a special rendition of “Welcome to My World” by Eddie Arnold and Jim Reeves. “Lay Your Head on My Pillow,” is the special song for Paul to remember Jennie until he joins her in Heaven.Family and friends may visit at Prugh Funeral Service, 3940 Division Street, on Monday, July 15 from 9 to 10:30 a.m.Jennie will be laid to rest at Aspen Grove Cemetery in Burlington. Graveside services will be held on Monday, July 15 at 11 a.m.&nbsp;In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for the Oakville Ambulance Service.

James A. “Jim” Brown, 74, of Burlington, died Tuesday, July 9, 2024, at his home. Born February 18, 1950, in Burlington, he was the son of Virrel and Exxa Lou “Peggy” Brown.

He was a U.S. Navy Veteran and worked for ISC for many years. He was of the Methodist faith.

Jim’s passion was fishing. He enjoyed playing pool and cards.

He is survived by his son, Jeffrey Brown; siblings, David Brown, Jerry Brown, Jane Armstrong, Lou Whitehair; sister-in-law, Rosemary Brown and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Dan Brown and step-father Forrest Hunt.

The graveside service and inurnment with military honors for Mr. Brown will be 2 p.m. Saturday, July 20 in Elmwood Cemetery, Morning Sun.

Cremation has been accorded and entrusted to the care of Lunning Chapel.

Caroline Rose Abbott, 1, of Burlington, died Wednesday, July 10, 2024, at her home in Burlington.

Born March 22, 2023, in West Burlington, she was the daughter of Aaron and Alyssa Dixon Abbott.&nbsp;

Caroline was the happiest child. She always had a smile on her face and her big, blue eyes spread joy wherever she was. She loved to talk and would say "Hi" to everyone she saw. Caroline loved to play, especially with her sister, Everlee. She was not a picky eater, as many children are, but instead liked trying new things. She enjoyed watching "Bluey" and loved music and dancing. She loved all of her animals very much and would cuddle with them often.

Survivors include her parents; one sister, Everlee Abbott of Burlington; paternal grandparents, Theresa and James Abbott of Burlington; maternal grandparents, Cathy Dixon, and Miles (Jennifer) Dixon; great-grandmother, O'Kemm Dixon; two aunts, Tara (Corbin) Folsom and Mallorie (Jesse) Gates; and cousins, Moira Gates, Mera Gates, and Mavis Gates.

She was preceded in death by her paternal great-grandparents, Michael and Margaret McCreight, James Abbott Sr., and Rosemarie Abbott-See; and maternal great-grandparents, Donald Dixon and Della (Francis) Laue.

Caroline Rose Abbott

David Robert Schwenker, 42, passed away Wednesday, July 10, 2024, at Mercy Medical Hospital in Des Moines.

David was born March 5, 1982, to Kenneth “Ken” and Elizabeth “Beth” Callaway Schwenker in Burlington. He was a 2000 graduate of Burlington High School and graduated from Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa, earning his Bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering. He moved to Des Moines where he began his career with IMT Insurance Company.

David enjoyed life. He played for many years in several adult hockey leagues in Central Iowa, both ice and roller hockey. He was a familiar face at both the Des Moines Buccaneers and Iowa Wild games as a season ticket holder to both teams.

David inherited a love of working with tools and wood from his father and maternal grandfather. He built a shed for his backyard, a coffee table and liked to carve. He enjoyed working on his own home. He also had an amazing talent at putting together jigsaw puzzles. David liked to cook, kept a salt water fish tank, plants and a garden. He seemed naturally good at anything he attempted.

He loved the outdoors and went on many camping and hiking trips, he summited mountains and loved to snowboard.

He is survived by his sister; Katherine “Kathy” Schwenker; many aunts, uncles and cousins and his wife Barbara Becker.

He was preceded in death by his parents, maternal grandparents Lester and Vera Callaway and paternal grandparents Robert and Bernice Schwenker.

Visitation will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 16 at Lunning Chapel. Burial will be held in Aspen Grove Cemetery at 12 p.m. Wednesday, July 17.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for the Des Moines County Humane Society in memory of David.

LaVon Pfadenhauer, 91, of Burlington, died Friday, July 12, 2024, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born August 30, 1933, in Afton, Iowa, she was number 11 of 16 children born to Bert and Ava Mae Mills Dady. She was proud of the fact that she obtained her G.E.D. at the age of 40. LaVon worked for National Research, Midwest Biscuit (now Shearers) and Campbell Chain. She was a long-time caregiver, babysitting for many children, and took care of many elderly in their homes.

She attended First Church of the Nazarene.

She was an avid collector of dolls and was famous for her pies and fried chicken. She was the best to everyone. Anyone she met; she touched their lives.

She is survived by her three daughters; Pamela Marie (William) Gulick, Ruth Ann Fortune and Tina Louise Kelley (Salvador Gallegos); seven grandchildren, Jamie Gulick, Ashley (Steve) Setterburg, Derek (Ashley) Greiner, Darren Greiner, Michael Kelley, Megan Kelley and Stormy (Matt) Johnson; great grandchildren, Kayden Edwards, Aareanna Osborn, Sierra Davis and Colin Greiner; sister, Evelyn Beirce; brothers, Milo True Dady and Orville Dady; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one son Terry Wayne Fortune; her daughter Ruth’s significant other Jeff Watters, whom she thought so much of, three brothers, ten sisters and her long-time sweetie Guy Mills.

The funeral service for Mrs. Pfadenhauer will be 3 p.m. Friday, July 19 at Lunning Chapel. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until the time of service on Friday.

Lavon Pfadenhauer

Janet Fae Martin, 91, of Burlington, passed peacefully Saturday, July 13, 2024, at the Klein Center in West Burlington.

Born May 24, 1933, in Wapello, she was the daughter of Mark William and Myrtle Agnes Swan Dietrick. She married Thomas Martin on March 7, 1952, and they later divorced.

She worked as a clerk for J.S. Schramms and Walmart. She retired in 1995.

She was a member of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ)

Janet was an avid reader and loved reading and learning about history. She enjoyed doing crossword puzzles and was a proud Chicago Cubs fan. She also enjoyed collecting owls. Most important to her was her time spent with her children and her grandchildren.

She is survived by her three daughters; Stephanie (Stephen) Wilson of Thornville, Ohio, Shelley (Barry) Hopson of Columbus, Ohio and Sydney (Kenneth) Dick of Burlington; six grandchildren, Alteza Kemp, Aaron (Jayme) Wilson, Amanda (Joseph) Rhodes, Arik (Chandra) Wilson, Kelly (Brian) Bonebrake and Kyle Dick; fourteen great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Mark William Dietrick and Myrtle Agnes Dietrick, son Michael Thomas Martin and brother Frank William Dietrick.

The memorial funeral service for Mrs. Martin will be 11 a.m. Friday, July 26 at First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) 1221 Park Ave., Burlington. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service. A luncheon will be held immediately following.

Seanne Marie West, 59, of Sperry, passed away peacefully Wednesday, July 10, 2024 at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City surrounded by her family. Born on Nov. 12, 1964, she was the daughter of James C. Hausner and Janet A. Bell. Seanne was a graduate of Danville High School. She married Kirk Loeffler and of this union they had a daughter; they later divorced.&nbsp;&nbsp;Seanne later married Frederick C. West Jr. and of this union two daughters were born; they divorced. For the last 31 years Seanne has spent her life happily with her husband, Walter D. West, gaining two bonus daughters.

Seanne enjoyed working outdoors caring for her garden and yard; her home was her pride and joy. Seanne spent many summers camping with Wally and her children. For 14 years Seanne spent winters in Everglades City, Florida as the beach was a happy place for her. She didn’t know a stranger and was often teased by Wally for smiling in public because they could never get out of a public place as she would end up talking to people, whether she knew them or not. Seanne loved her children, bonus children, and grandchildren more than life itself. Her favorite times were gatherings with all of her grandchildren together at once. Seanne and Wally lived in Sperry, Iowa in their little heaven on Earth, with their dog, Jack; kittens, Bo and Luke; and most recent addition of chickens. Seanne wanted chickens for a long time, and just like every other dream she had, Wally made that happen for her.&nbsp;

Seanne was preceded in death by her mother, Janet (Robert) Bell; father, James Hausner; maternal grandparents, George and Margaret Besco; and paternal grandparents, Alonzo and Madeline Hausner. She is survived by her husband, Walter of Sperry; dog, Jack; children, Jamie (Daniel) Pringle of Keota, Heidi (Cole) Musselman of Mediapolis, Kayla Harkless of Keosauqua, Whitney (Dan) Kinney of West Burlington, and Kaysie (Gabe) Burden of New London; grandchildren, Chloe, Skyler, and Aiden Pringle; Kaylee and Karter Calvin; Brantley Musselman; Bucannon and Logan Harkless; and Ava and Ari Kinney.&nbsp;

According to her wishes, her body has been cremated and a family Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.&nbsp;&nbsp;Elliott Chapel, New London, is assisting the family.

He proudly served in the Iowa Army National Guard. He married Karen Bush on Dec. 27, 1959. She preceded him in death on Feb. 24, 2022.Larry was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and was an Electrician. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, all racing and race cars; late models, dirt track and watching NASCAR. He was proud of his military heritage and loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren.He is survived by his two children; Tonya (Scott) Powell and Doug (Debby) Hale; grandchildren, Daniel (Mitzi) Powell, Elizabeth Swan, Michael (Nicole) Powell, Katelyn (Jordan) Adamson and James (Scarlet) Hale; six great grandchildren; one sister Elaine Lox; nieces and nephews and his constant faithful companion, Koda.He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife Karen.The funeral service for Mr. Hale will be 11 a.m. Monday, July 15 at Lunning Chapel.
