Larry E. Clawson, 82, of Danville died Tuesday, Nov. 16, 2021 at Danville Care Center. Born Nov. 3, 1939, in Butte, Mont., he was the son of Ernest Lavern and Nellie Dowling Clawson. He married Harriet Potter; they later divorced. Larry worked for Hughes Aircraft and as an engineer before moving to Nebraska. He then began working for Roto-Rooter in Omaha, Neb. Larry enjoyed volunteering for the Red Cross and the animal shelter, where he was responsible for transportation of pets from shelter to shelter. Survivors include one son, Eugene Clawson, and one daughter, Annette Clawson, both of Middletown; and one brother, Ken Clawson of Montana. Richard Mellinger, 90, of Burlington, died Wednesday, Nov. 17, 2021, at Heritage Nursing and Rehab in Cedar Rapids.

Born Oct. 3, 1931, in Burlington, he was the son of Fred William and Sophia Elizabeth Stoller Mellinger. He graduated from Burlington Community High School in 1949.&nbsp; On May 29, 1955, he married JoAnn McQueen in Burlington. JoAnn died November 12, 2005.

Richard served in the United States Army and was stationed in Germany during the Korean war.

His first job was at Sweetheart Bakery in Burlington. Richard later became a life insurance salesman and financial planner for Minnesota Mutual/Minnesota Life.

He was a member of First Christian Church, American Legion, and a volunteer with the Senior Citizen Group. Richard was very involved with the Burlington Community School District, was the first president of the Burlington High School Athletic Booster Club, and loved announcing for football, wrestling, track, softball, and baseball. Richard was very proud to have the BHS wrestling tournament named after him.

Survivors include his four children, Becky Koehler of Burlington, Robin Mellinger of Hills, Rick Mellinger of Burlington, and Steve Mellinger of Brunswick, Ga.; 12 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Loretta Dixon of The Villages, Fla., and Marjorie Roth of Waukee.

Visitation will be from noon until 7 p.m. with the family to receive friends from 4 until 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 22 at Prugh-Thielen Funeral Home.

Vickie worked as a housekeeper for Great River Medical Center for 16 years; prior to that she was a bartender for many years.

Warren Gustav Hohmbraker, 94, of Sperry, died Wednesday, Nov.17, 2021, at Prairie Ridge Care and Rehabilitation in Mediapolis.

Born May 18, 1927, at his family's homestead outside of Sperry, he was the son of William G. and Alma Young Hohmbraker. He married Maxine Myers and they later divorced. On May 27, 1954, he married Mary Louise Vollmer in Mediapolis. She later passed Dec. 25, 2020.

Warren was a lifelong farmer. He started working on his family's farm after he finished eighth grade at Piney Wood County School.

He went to the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Mediapolis and later attended Kingston Methodist Church. He was a member of the American Farm Bureau Federation, American Hereford Association, Mississippi Valley Morgan Horse Club, Hawkeye Morgan Horse Club, and Louisa County Saddle Club. Survivors include his daughter, Marvalene Cousins of Burlington; one son, Kenneth Hohmbraker of Danville; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be at 10 until 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov.23 at Prugh-Thielen Funeral Home.

Rosel McCandless Smith, 93, of Mediapolis, died Monday, Nov. 15, 2021, at the Azria Health Care Center in Mediapolis.

Born September 16, 1928, in Bieber, West Germany, she was the daughter of Kilian Willibald and Theresia&nbsp; Schrodt Kohl. She married John J. McCandless in Offenbach, am Main Germany at Castle Offenbach. They later divorced. She then married Kenneth Smith; he died September 8,1990.

She completed general schooling and trade school in Bieber, and Offenbach am Main, West Germany. She became a U.S. citizen and brought her parents to the United States.

Rosel also had a love for business, sales, and fashion, so that was the path she chose after trade school.&nbsp;

She was a past officer of the Women of the Moose and the International Friendship Club.&nbsp;

She attended Zion United Church of Christ for many years, but came to New Life Family Church through being chosen by their youth group.&nbsp;

Survivors include her children, Marika Nunnikoven and John McCandless; five grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 5 until 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 22 at New Life Family Church, where the family will receive friends.

Beverly May Smith, 87, of Burlington, died on Wednesday, Nov.17, 2021, at Ridgeview Assisted Living in Burlington.

Born May 10, 1934, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Rudolph Oscar and Ida Mae Rose Fehse Lucas. On March 14, 1954, she married Ralph Leslie Smith in St. John's Church of Flint River Township. He passed away on May 3, 2014.

Beverly was a payroll clerk/bookkeeper for Simpson Security Papers in Burlington.

She was a member of St. John's Church of Flint River Township.&nbsp;

Survivors include her children, Anthony L. Chris Smith of Mountain View, Wyo., June L. Morgan of Burlington, Rosemary I. Blint of Fort Madison; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and one brother, LaVerne R. Lucas of Burlington.

Merrill A. Miller, 99, of Burlington, died Tuesday, Nov. 16, 2021, at Oakview Care and Rehabilitation Center in Burlington. Born May 2, 1922, in Burlington, he was the son of Clarence C. and Alberta Fisher Miller. He married Florence Douglas in Caerphilly, South Wales, Great Britain, on June 19, 1944. She died November 3, 1985. Merrill served in the Army during WWII as a Sgt. Tech 5. He worked as a brakeman for Burlington Northern and a switchman for CB&amp;Q railroads for 46 years until his retirement in 1983. He was of the Roman Catholic faith. He was a member of the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainman; VFW; UTU, where he served as the grievance chairman for many years; and the Eagles Aerie #150. Survivors include his four children, Barbara Schoell of Overland Park, Kan., Lillian Krehbiel of Omaha, Neb., Margette Wiemann of Burlington, and Merrill “Pete” Miller of Houston, Tex.; his longtime friend, Mary Flieg of Sigourney; 10 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren.

Terry "Chief" Neff, 67, of Burlington, died Monday, Nov. 15, 2021, at Blessing Hospital in Quincy, Ill.

Born Dec. 21, 1953, in LaHarpe, Ill., he was the son of Eldon H. and Frances A. Bundy Neff. On July 9, 2005, he married Sheila Simmons in Burlington.&nbsp;

Terry graduated from Southern High School, Stronghurst, Ill., in 1972. Terry was employed by JI Case immediately following graduation and retired from the company after 38 years. He was an active member of UAW and district coordinator for ABATE.&nbsp;

Terry "Chief" Neff, 67, of Burlington, died Monday, Nov. 15, 2021, at Blessing Hospital in Quincy, Ill.Born Dec. 21, 1953, in LaHarpe, Ill., he was the son of Eldon H. and Frances A. Bundy Neff. On July 9, 2005, he married Sheila Simmons in Burlington.&nbsp;Terry graduated from Southern High School, Stronghurst, Ill., in 1972. Terry was employed by JI Case immediately following graduation and retired from the company after 38 years. Ronald Duane Ellerhoff, 74 years old, of Middletown, passed away on Sunday, Nov. 14, 2021, at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center, in Peoria, Ill.

Born on March 7, 1947, Ron was the son of Milton C. Ellerhoff and Doris M. Sater Ellerhoff in Burlington. He was a 1965 graduate of Burlington High School and earned a degree in business and economics from Iowa Wesleyan College of Mount Pleasant in 1969, as well as a Doctor of Jurisprudence degree from Drake University in 1985.

On Aug. 19, 1967, he married Lorene Rose Jacobsmeier in Fort Madison. Ron served in the Army as a clerk during his deployment to Vietnam in the early 70s. Later, he served and retired with the rank of Captain from the Army Reserves JAG Corps. In addition to the military, he worked as a home loan representative, a real estate broker, and, for the past 36 years, as an independent attorney. Over the years, he held numerous positions or memberships: ILLOWA Scuba Club, Des Moines County Bar Association, Middletown City Council, Middletown Presbyterian Church, National Rifle Association, TriState Gun Club, Community Action of Southeast Iowa board, Burlington Optimist Club, and Boys Scouts of America (during youth and as an adult leader). He most recently attended the First Congregational Church of Burlington. Ron is survived by his wife; three children, Jena Ellerhoff of Middletown, Lea McCormick of Mount Pleasant, and Jared Ellerhoff of Marion; two sisters, Elyce Riney of Middletown and Becky Davis of Burlington; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Donald Bernard Mueller, 78, of West Burlington, died Monday, Nov. 15, 2021, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in West Burlington.

Born April 28, 1943, in Fort Madison, he was the son of Alfred "Butch" and Mary Ellen Ford Mueller. On Nov. 18, 1983, he married Mitzi Mitchell in Fort Madison.&nbsp;

He began his employment working for his father at Mueller Welding &amp; Fabrication in St. Paul. He then worked for Anchor Metals and finally for General Electric until retiring after 34 years.

He was of the Catholic faith. At the age of 14, he graduated eighth grade at St. James School in St. Paul and moved out on his own. He was a member of a van club and street rod clubs.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, Tim Mueller and Bob Mueller, both of Pensacola, Fla., and Shawn Mathew of New London; one sister, Betty Boughton of Burlington; three brothers, Darrell Mueller of Fort Madison, Frank Mueller of West Point, and Mike Mueller of Burlington; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Cremation will be entrusted to the care of Prugh Crematory following the visitation.

Vivienne Starling, 94, of Burlington, died Friday, Nov. 12, 2021, at the Klein Center in West Burlington.

Born Aug. 28, 1927, in Keokuk, she was the daughter of George Leonard and Mary Agnes&nbsp; Robinson. On Sept. 8, 1968, she married Elder Fred Starling in Fort Madison.

She worked for a few years at Mercy Hospital and then J.I. Case Company until her retirement.

She was a dedicated member of the NAACP. For 50 years she labored for the both Faith Temple Church of God in Christ and Mt. Calvary Church of God in Christ, Macomb, Ill.

Survivors include her husband; one sister, MarScine Brown of Burlington; three granddaughters; three grandsons; 14 great-grandchildren; and 9 great-great-grandchildren.

Esther Elizabeth Abrisz , 88, of Burlington, died Friday, Nov. 12, 2021, at the Klein Center in West Burlington.

Born July 29, 1933, in Winnsboro, La., she was the daughter of Patrick Joseph and Rachel Elizabeth Matney Madden. She married Richard P. Abrisz on July 7, 1952, at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base. He died March 28, 2015. She attended Watsonville High School, Calif., and later earned her GED when she was 48.

She worked as a seamstress for many years, both at Schramm's and Younker's doing alterations to fine clothing. She then established a home-based alterations business, enjoying many years of success.

Esther was a member of Oak Street Baptist Church and served as a deaconess. She also volunteered at Perkins School to read to the young students there.

Survivors include five children, Susan Abrisz of Lynnwood, Wash., Cathy Ullery, Joe Abrisz, and Terry Abrisz, all of Burlington, and Cindy McCrory of Atkins, Iowa; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Wanda J Kurrle, 75, of Burlington died Nov. 13, 2021, at Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center.

Born April 25, 1946, in Kansas City, Mo., she was the daughter of Earl B. and Pearl Walker Rice. She married John Allen Kurrle, Sr. in Sept. 1991. He died in Aug. 1992.

Wanda was a beautician and worked in food service for over 35 years. She was of the Methodist faith.

Wanda is survived by two stepchildren, Allena Newkirk of Fort Madison and John “Charlie” Allen Kurrle, Jr. of Virginia; one sister, Betty June Mapes of LaHarpe, Ill.; and two step-grandchildren.

Ira Frederick Stewart, 93, of Burlington, died Nov. 13, 2021, at his home.

Born March 15, 1928, in Detroit, Mich., he was the son of Jack A. and Georgia J. Mitchell Stewart. On June 11, 1993, he married Deborah A. Duttweiler in Burlington, IA.&nbsp;

Ira retired from IAAP after 42 years, including two years at the testing site in Las Vegas. After retiring, he worked as a security officer, at Lowe's for over eight years, at Hy-Vee for four years, and as Mr. Avon.

He was a U.S. Navy Veteran, serving during World War II for six years earning the rank of Radioman 1st Class.

Ira was a member of SS. John &amp; Paul Catholic Church. He was a member of the VFW, where he served on the color guard, and the American Legion. He helped organize and start the Saunderson Heights Neighborhood Patrol.&nbsp;

Survivors include his wife; one son, Fred Stewart of Silverlake, Kan.; four daughters, Julie Andrews, Sarah McKee, Carrie Wixom all of Burlington, and Amy Pelletier of Orlando, Fla.; 20 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 1 until 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 17 at Prugh-Thielen Funeral Home.

Elizabeth "Liz" Renner, 93, of Danville, died Wednesday, Nov. 10, 2021. Liz resided at the Klein Center in West Burlington.

Born Nov. 11, 1927, in Morning Sun, she was the daughter of Lee Otis and Mable Ellen Stodgell. Liz was a reformed Presbyterian.

When she was 14, she went to school to learn to be a "farmette.” These young girls learned to drive tractors to fill in for the young men who had to go to war. Liz later earned her RN and was a clinical instructor at southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center.

On Oct. 4, 1948, she married Keith Burdette Renner in Nashua. He died Jan. 9, 2016. Keith and Liz lived on a farm southeast of Danville where they raised Angus cattle, sheep and hogs and grew corn and beans. Liz used her nursing skills to tend to all the animals.

Survivors include two sisters, Leota Pilling of Mediapolis and Helen Baum of Iowa City.

The graveside committal service for Mrs. Renner will be 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 15 at Jaggar Cemetery in Danville.

Liz resided at the Klein Center in West Burlington.Born Nov. 11, 1927, in Morning Sun, she was the daughter of Lee Otis and Mable Ellen Stodgell. Liz was a reformed Presbyterian.When she was 14, she went to school to learn to be a "farmette.” These young girls learned to drive tractors to fill in for the young men who had to go to war. Liz later earned her RN and was a clinical instructor at southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center.On Oct. 4, 1948, she married Keith Burdette Renner in Nashua. He died Jan. 9, 2016. Keith and Liz lived on a farm southeast of Danville where they raised Angus cattle, sheep and hogs and grew corn and beans. Liz used her nursing skills to tend to all the animals.Survivors include two sisters, Leota Pilling of Mediapolis and Helen Baum of Iowa City.The graveside committal service for Mrs. Renner will be 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 15 at Jaggar Cemetery in Danville.

Jerry Lee Murrell, 75, of Burlington, died Tuesday, Nov. 9, 2021, at his home.

Born Jan. 1, 1946, in Bloomfield, he was the son of Evans and Cleo Nelson Murrell. On June 29, 1969, he married Sonya Jean Kirchgassner in Burlington.&nbsp;

He worked in production for Exide until their closing, and also worked at Leopold's and Walmart.

Survivors include his wife; one son, Cory Evans Murrell-Walston of Burlington; two daughters, Sheri Lake and Cindy Krieger both of Sperry; three siblings, Iris Louise of Burlington, John Robert Murrell of Bloomfield, and Judy Abbott of Haywarden; seven grandkids and seven great-grandkids.

Per Jerry's wishes, there will be no visitation or services.

Mrs. Jacqueline A. Nelson, 78, of Burlington, died Thursday, Nov. 11, 2021, at the OakView Nursing Home and Rehabilitation in Burlington.

Born June 5, 1943, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Merle and Geraldine Allendorf Roasa Boyle Mauer. She graduated from Notre Dame High School in 1961.&nbsp; On Feb. 18, 1966, she married Jerry Lee Nelson in Biggsville. He preceded her in death on Aug. 1, 2014.

Jackie served as a legal advocate beginning in 2002 for the YWCA Domestic Violence Shelter and Women's Resource Center, retiring in 2014.&nbsp;

Survivors include two daughters, Stacey L. Meyer and Lynnie&nbsp; Krogmeier, two grandchildren, and two great-grandsons, all of Burlington.

Per Jackie's wishes cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh Crematory. The family will hold a private inurnment at Aspen Grove Cemetery.

For friends that would like to honor Jackie's memory, the family is suggesting a donation be made to a charity of their choice.

Gregory “Tony” Blint, 72, formerly of Burlington, died Monday, Nov. 8, 2021.&nbsp;

Born Nov. 4, 1949 in Fort Madison, he was the son of Don and Leora Hundt Blint.

Greg grew up in Burlington until he enlisted in the Army during the Vietnam War. After his time in the service, he returned home for a short time before moving to California, where he made his home for the remainder of his life.

Greg was a singer and an artist, having his artwork shown in galleries. He also owned a cleaning business until his health declined. Greg is survived by one sister, Patty Coleman of Wapello, and one brother, Donnie Blint of Burlington. A private family memorial service will be held at a later date. Greg’s wishes are to have his ashes distributed over Malibu Beach in California.

Jessica Lynn Severs, 39, of Burlington, died Sunday, Nov. 7, 2021, at her home.

Born Sept. 21, 1982, in Iowa City, she was the daughter of Charles Severs and Romonna Crabtree.

She was a 2001 graduate of Burlington High School. She was of the Christian faith.

Survivors include her mother; her father; one daughter, Merissa Severs of Burlington; two brothers, Donny Severs of Jordan, Minn., and Chuck Severs of Burlington; step-father, Michael Knotts of Burlington; and step-brother, Tony Knotts of Burlington.

Visitation will be from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 13&nbsp; at Prugh-Thielen Funeral Home. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for her daughter Merissa's education.
