Steven Allen Lebeck, 75, of Burlington, died Wednesday, August 3, 2022, at his home.

Born April 28, 1947, in Burlington, he was the son of Francis Eugene "Corky" and Ellen May Ehret Lebeck.&nbsp;

He graduated from Burlington High School in 1965 and then attended Southeastern Community College.&nbsp;

He was a U.S. Navy Veteran, serving from August 1966 until March 1971 aboard the USS Terrell County (LST 1157). He spent three tours of duty in Vietnam in the Naval Advisory Group.&nbsp;

Steven retired from Champion Spark Plug Company in Burlington after over 40 years of employment.

He was a member of the American Legion, VFW, Moose, Eagles, Corvette Club, and Terrell County Association. Steven enjoyed reunions and get-togethers with his classmates and his Navy brothers. He was a long-time season ticket holder for the SCC Athletics.&nbsp;

Survivors include his sister, Nancy (Vern) Morrow of Burlington; brother, Francis&nbsp; "Gene" (Kathy) Lebeck, Jr. of Le Claire, Ia.; nephew, John Hunter of Burlington; two nieces, Diana Orwick of Independence, Mo. and Sara Gameon of Boise, Idaho; five great nieces and nephews; and one great-great niece.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, parents, and one great nephew.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh Crematory.

A Private Graveside Committal Service will be held in Aspen Grove Cemetery. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.&nbsp;

Memorials have been established for Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice and SCC Booster Club.&nbsp;

Henry "Hank" Damien Kivlahan, 84, of Burlington, died Tuesday, August 2, 2022, at his home.

Born November 13, 1937, in Detroit, Mich., he was the son of Henry Damien and Margaret Helena Foley Kivlahan. On September 23, 1972, he married Patricia "Pat" Neff at St. John's in Burlington, Iowa. She has been by his side for 50 years.&nbsp;&nbsp;

He was a U.S. Army Veteran, serving from November 28, 1961, until September 3, 1963.

He was a 1955 graduate of St. Joseph's High School, Farley Ia. He then received his Bachelor's in Chemistry from Loras College in Dubuque.

Henry worked for IAAP for five years. He owned and managed rental properties in Burlington.&nbsp;

Henry was a member of Divine Mercy Parish. He kept in contact with his classmates from Farley. No matter the weather, he loved taking hour-long walks with his wife. Henry was a people person. He loved to get others to tell their stories and talk about their family. He was a licensed pilot and often flew family members to destinations around the Midwest. Most of all, Henry treasured and adored everyone in his family.

Survivors include his wife, Pat of Burlington; daughter, Joanne Elizabeth (Matthew) Rhoden of Nashville, Tenn.; three sisters, Sr. Mary Kivlahan, O.S.F. of Dubuque, Joanne (Richard) Boudreau of La Crosse, Wis., and Alice (Robert) Stenander of Galesburg, Ill. and many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, John Francis Kivlahan and Dr. James Jerome Kivlahan.&nbsp;

The Graveside Committal Service for Mr. Kivlahan will be 10 a.m. Friday, August 5, at Sacred Heart Cemetery with Very Rev. Father Marty Goetz officiating.&nbsp;

Matthew (Matt) O’Keefe, 54, of Chicago, Illinois, died unexpectedly April 22, 2022, due to an auto accident near Bonaparte, Iowa.&nbsp; 

Born August 6, 1967, he was the son of Thomas and Judy (nee Ittershagen) O’Keefe. &nbsp;Originally from Monroeville, New Jersey, the family moved to Burlington, Iowa in 1979.&nbsp; Matt graduated from Burlington Community High School in 1985 as valedictorian and went on to earn his B.S. in Computer Science at the University of Illinois at Chicago in 1997, graduating #1 in the College of Engineering.&nbsp; 

After graduating, he had a very successful career as a technologist, beginning his career at the start of the Internet boom.&nbsp; His first position was Senior Software Engineer for ZEFER/Neoglyphic.&nbsp; He went on to become Chief Technology Officer at Hyatt. &nbsp;He was most proud of his work on ERMA and Graphite, two open-source projects that were pioneers in real-time intelligence and complex event processing. &nbsp;In his last position, he worked as Senior Director of Architecture at Aetna (a CVS Health Company) where he led successful innovative teams using the latest cutting-edge technologies. 

Matt subsequently pursued his dream of opening a French Restaurant in Fairfield, Iowa, and owning/operating an organic farm.&nbsp; Matt shared his extensive knowledge, expertise, and insights by giving presentations to large audiences at tech and industry conferences and authored articles in industry publications.&nbsp; He brought the same boundless drive and enthusiasm to the restaurant project he had started in Fairfield.&nbsp;

While in high school Matt became competitive in cycling.&nbsp; As a teen he rose quickly to category two, winning numerous races including the challenging Snake Alley Criterium. He spent time at the Olympic Training&nbsp;Center in Colorado Springs where he narrowly missed making the Junior Worlds Team.&nbsp;

He maintained friendships throughout his life with his Burlington team The Cyclery and became involved in racing again as an adult in Chicago on the XXX/Athletico team which became Burnham racing. He won quite a few Cat 4 and 5 races including Downers Grove&nbsp;IL (2004) CAT 4 winner in the National Criterium Championship and won the Quad Cities (2004) Criterium CAT 4.&nbsp; He was once able to do his warmup ride for a cycling race while taking a work-related outage call on his phone, coding, and riding as he went!&nbsp; Matt was also proud to be a bike marshal for numerous Chicago marathons.&nbsp;

While in school, Matt taught himself bass guitar and joined a Burlington-based band called Nu World Mutants and later Barking Spiders, making several recordings and videos with the bands.&nbsp; Music has always been one of his main interests and he stayed in touch with his bandmates.&nbsp; 

He continued this interest while attending the University of Iowa where he met his wife, Lisa O’Keefe (nee Dowd).&nbsp; They moved to Chicago, married, and both shared a love for travel, fine dining, reading, and enjoying their cats and dogs.

Traveling for business and pleasure took Matt all over the world from Finland to Sardinia, from India to China, and many places in between.&nbsp; In the last year of his life, he was able to revisit some of his most beloved places: Paris (where he saw the Tour de France finale), San Miguel de Allende Mexico,&nbsp;and New Orleans. He loved taking photos on those trips, exploring other cultures, and trying local foods.&nbsp;&nbsp;He visited Ireland, the birthplace of his grandparents, several times, and was proud to honor them by obtaining Irish (dual) Citizenship in 2017.&nbsp; He kept in touch with family and his many friends on social media, often sharing photos of favorite dining experiences from his travels and some very unique photos of architecture in Chicago.&nbsp; In the past year, combining several of his interests, he was beginning to record drone videos set to his own experimental music.

Matt was an extraordinary person but very understated about his many achievements.&nbsp; He lived life to the fullest and was loved by friends and family for his sense of humor, genuine caring, unique personality, and gusto.&nbsp;

He was preceded in his death by his parents.&nbsp; Survivors include three brothers, Tom (Christine) O'Keefe, Jr. of Boykins, Va., Brian (Donna) O'Keefe of Swampscott, Mass., &nbsp;Chris (Ronda) O'Keefe of West Point, Ia., and sister, Marianne Kemerling of Peoria, Ill.&nbsp; He was married to Lisa O'Keefe who he met in college. Their marriage lasted over twenty years, but their friendship endured until he died.

Cremation has been entrusted to the Prugh Crematory.

Matthew (Matt) O’Keefe

Lois M. Duke, 92, of Wever, died Monday, July 25, 2022, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in West Burlington.&nbsp;

Born October 15, 1929, in Burlington, Iowa, she was the daughter of Leo and Helen (Owen) Martin. She married Monte Duke. They later divorced. She was previously married to Bryan Lewis and Russ Rawlings.&nbsp;

Lois worked for National Research, Gibby’s, Winegard, and more recently for Wal-Mart for 23 years until her retirement. 

She was a member of Divine Mercy Parish.&nbsp; She was a very giving person and was “Mom” to everyone. She loved attending picnics, family gatherings, and spending time with her grandkids. She was an avid reader and enjoyed mushroom hunting, dancing, and roller skating in her younger years and attending the activities of her kids, grandkids, and family members. She prayed the Rosary nightly and was devoted to her faith.&nbsp;

Survivors include her four children; Michael Lewis of Burlington, Lucinda “Cindy” Garrels of Wever, Rebecca “Becky” (Rick) Buford of Sherrard, Illinois, and Deanna Thele of Burlington; grandchildren, Lisa McPherson, Danny Thele, Michelle Lewis, Darren Brown, Christopher “Critter” Mcgiff-Brown and Shawn Brown; several great-grandchildren; several “bonus” children she raised as her own and numerous “bonus” grandchildren and great-grandchildren and three sister’s-in-law, Connie Martin, Bert Martin, and Nancy Martin.&nbsp;

She was preceded in death by her parents; six brothers; Bud, Teno, Jim, Donnie, Tom, and Dale; two sisters Betty and Doris and son-in-law David Garrels.&nbsp;

A Celebration of life will be held at a later date at the Eagles Club #150, Burlington. A memorial has been established.&nbsp; According to Lois’s wishes, her body has been donated to the University of Iowa Deeded Body Program for medical research.&nbsp;

George J. Kozacik, 84, of West Burlington, Iowa, died Sunday, July 31, 2022, at his home.&nbsp; Born June 14, 1938, in East Chicago, Indiana, he was the son of Eleanor and George Kozacik. He was married to Mary Louise Farr for 27 years and had a son, Keith, and daughter, Laura. He later married Linda J. Hale in Burlington, Iowa on April 19, 1992.&nbsp; Dr. Kozacik retired from the AEA 16 in 2000 and previously held various roles as a teacher, reading consultant, and professor. He was a member of the ROTC throughout college, served in the Marines in 1956, and was stationed in Germany with the U.S. Army from 1962-1964. He graduated from Indiana University with a B.A. in English; completed an M.A. in Education from Clark College; and earned an M.A. in Teaching and a Ph.D. in Education from Indiana University.&nbsp; He was a lifetime Eagle’s Club member. He enjoyed various hobbies, including reading, gardening, fishing, beekeeping, and taxidermy. He was a patron of numerous arts and music organizations and was a member of the First Presbyterian Church choir in Burlington.&nbsp; Survivors include one son, Keith Kozacik (Penny Cahill) of Iowa City; one daughter, Laura Kozacik Graber (Aaron Couchman) of Lineville; one step-son Kevin McCarty (Paula McCarty) of Des Moines; two step-daughters, Samantha McCarty Hahn (Nate Hahn) of Louisville and Julie Pressner (John Pressner) of Dundee; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and nieces and nephews. George is also survived by his first wife, (Mother of Keith and Laura), Mary L. Kamm, of Salem, Iowa.&nbsp; He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, and sister, June K. Frazier.&nbsp; There will be no formal visitation. His body has been cremated and a memorial service will be scheduled for a future date.&nbsp; Memorial funds have been established for Iowa Food Bank and the Des Moines County Humane Society.&nbsp;

George J. Kozacik

Antje Johns, 61, of West Burlington, died Friday, July 22, 2022, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House.&nbsp;

Born, February 26, 1961, I Rodheim v.d. Hohe West Germany, she was the daughter of Otto Karl and Wilfriede E. (Fromm) Trousil.&nbsp;

Antje graduated from West Burlington High School and Phoenix College. She married Michael Johns in November of 1984. They later divorced.&nbsp;

Antje was a Respiratory Care Therapist for 25 years at Phoenix General Hospital. She was of the Christian faith. You could often find her on the computer. Over the years she had lots of Bassett Hounds. She loved her dogs.&nbsp;

You could often find her on the computer. Over the years she had lots of Bassett Hounds. Susan Ellen Brenneman, 80, died from natural causes at 2:30 a.m. July 24, 2022.&nbsp; Born in Elkhart, Ind., April 11, 1942 to Alpheus D. and Lila Leah Hartman, she was the oldest of seven (Fern, Larry, David, Debra, with Richard and Mary preceding her in death).&nbsp; She married Curtis Brenneman in Hannibal, Mo., Nov. 12, 1960, who she met attending high school at Iowa Mennonite in Kalona. They were members of the West Burlington Christian Church.&nbsp; She enjoyed her family, spent time making treasured (and spectacular) greeting cards, and loved to talk with people.&nbsp; She was a homemaker throughout her life, selling Wheatonware and Avon successfully before starting work for Drs. Kent and McGee in 1977, then working at Family Practice, retiring in May 2014.&nbsp; She is survived by her husband, three sons (Douglas, Randall, Chad), seven grandchildren (Rivir, Cassidy, Drayke, Joel, Mycah, Marissa, Trey), and one great-granddaughter (Rayna), nieces, nephews, and cousins.&nbsp; A Celebration of Life service is Saturday, July 30 at 10:30 a.m. at the West Burlington Christian Church. Lorretta Vondean White, 90, of Burlington, died at 11:32 a.m. Friday, July 22, 2022, at the OakView Nursing Home and Rehabilitation in Burlington.

Born August 31, 1931, in Ottumwa, Ia., she was the daughter of Dean "Dion" and Anna Mae Wyott Manos. When her father died, her mother married Elmer Harnden who raised her since she was a child. On April 17, 1954, she married Donald Franklin White in Lancaster, Mo. He died on August 9, 2010.

Lorretta worked for Winegard Co. for 25 years.

She was a member of the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). She enjoyed spending time with family and reading books about the Amish. She was also a member of the Women of the Moose, the Eagles, the VFW Auxilary, and the Red Hatters. She loved to shop and travel. Most of all, she loved her family, especially her grandkids and great-grandkids.

Survivors include one daughter, Sandra (Ed) Gerst of Burlington; one son, Alan Dean (Pam) White of Ottumwa, Ia.; one daughter-in-law, Diane Gilliland of Rock Island, Ill.; six grandchildren, Michael Gilliland of Rock Island, Ill., Gina (Dallas) Cox of Coal Valley, Ill, Brett (Leanna) White of Ottumwa, Ia., Courtney (Benoit) Igne of Mansfield, Ma., Austin (Kadi) White of Grimes, Ia., and Katie (Justin) Albright of Robins, Ia.; eight great-grandchildren, Arthur, Maurice and Leopold Igne, Gavin and Dakota Cox, Thisbe Albright, Braden Gilliland and Breelea White; and many nieces and nephews. Loretta also leaves behind many cherished friends.

Besides her husband, she is preceded in death by one son, Rick Gilliland, two brothers, and three sisters.

Visitation will be from 12 p.m. until 7 p.m. with the family to receive friends from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 26, 2022, at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home.

The funeral service for Lorretta will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 27, 2022, at First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) with Reverend David J. Yonker and Reverend Brooke Anthony officiating. Pauline C. Rein, 84, of West Burlington, died Tuesday, July 26, 2022, at the OakView Nursing Home and Rehabilitation in Burlington with her daughters by her side.

Born March 9, 1938, in Washington, Ia., she was the daughter of Donald R. and Edna Mae Lamansky Crone.

Pauline worked as a graphic artist at Winegard for 19 years and she also worked as a copywriter.

Pauline was a member of First Presbyterian Church. She enjoyed art and was very artistic. Pauline also enjoyed gardening, reading, and volunteering at the library and hospital. She always loved taking care of the many cats she owned throughout the years.

Survivors include her daughters, Carol (David) Hughes of Avon, Ind., Karina (Dr. Thomas) Serbousek of Las Vegas, Nev.; grandchildren, James and Timothy Hughes, Chase and Sydney Bennett; and two step-grandchildren, Jack and Katie Serbousek.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents.

Eugene J. Sperry, 70, of Burlington, died Sunday, July 24, 2022, at his home.&nbsp;

Born January 12, 1952, in Burlington, he was the son of Justin V. and Eloise Jane Blakeway Sperry. Gene moved to the family farm in Danville in 1954.&nbsp;

Gene graduated from Danville High School in 1971. On June 4, 1994, he married Rhonda R. Richardson Korf.&nbsp;

He began working at JI Case company in 1973. He retired from the painting department in 2004. Gene was also a commercial fisherman and a taxidermist.&nbsp;

Gene was a member of UAW Local 807, Ducks Unlimited, Pheasants Forever, and Danville Racing Association. He liked to go on Wisconsin trips. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, the National Hot Rod Association, sprint cars, and boating. He loved and knew the Mississippi River.&nbsp;

Survivors include his wife Rhonda of Burlington; daughter Lindsey Mike Simpson of Burlington, granddaughter Bailey (Will Gilbert) Skidmore of Burlington and a great grandbaby on the way; brother Dennis (Nancy) Sperry of Danville; numerous nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews; and always his sidekick, Hannah Jo.&nbsp;

Gene was preceded in death by his parents.&nbsp;

Per his wishes cremation has been accorded and entrusted to the care of Lunning Chapel. There will be no services at this time. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.&nbsp;

Otto Richard Groenewald Jr., 61, of Burlington, died Wednesday, July 20, 2022, at the Big Hollow Recreation Area.

Born May 21, 1961, in Ottumwa, Iowa, he was the son of Otto Richard and Marcella&nbsp; Groenewald. On March 3, 2001, he married Collette in Oakland Mills Campground in Henry County, where the couple served as campground hosts.&nbsp;

He was a 1979 graduate of Burlington High School.

Otto was a retired Staff Rep for AFSME. He and Collette were campground hosts at Big Hollow Recreation Area for many years, welcoming guests and assuring everyone had a great experience.

Otto was a rock hound. He enjoyed nature, camping, and especially loved sharing bad jokes on a daily basis.&nbsp;

Survivors include his wife; Collette Groenewald; daughter, Shayla Grobe of Morrison, Ill.; daughter, Cory Collins of Littlefield, Tex.; eight grandchildren; Hunter, Tea, Lyndsey, Katelyn, James, Jasper, Johnathon, and Jacob; three great-grandchildren; Jaycee, Kinslee, and Laynie; one brother, David (Sherry) Groenewald of Burlington and several nieces and nephews.

William Henry Laughlin, 92, of Burlington, died Tuesday, July 19, 2022, at the Bickford Cottage in Burlington.

Born September 19, 1929, in Dows, Ia., he was the son of William Henry Laughlin II and Bertha Ann Whisler. On February 24, 1958, he married Lorraine Ann Briese in Alden, Ia. She died on February 5, 2021.

William graduated from Dows High School in 1947 and worked at the family-owned Dows Variety and Furniture Store. After moving to Burlington he went on to work as a sales associate for Chittenden &amp; Eastman Furniture for 35 years.&nbsp;

William was a gun enthusiast and a founding member of the Dows Gun Club.&nbsp; He served as a volunteer firefighter with the Dows fire department.&nbsp; He loved all animals, especially Boston Terrier bulldogs.

Survivors include one daughter, Karanel (Tim) Larson of Burlington, and one grandchild, Natalie Larson of Chapel Hill, N.C.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Lorraine.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh~Thielen Crematory.

Per his wishes, there will be no visitation or services.

George Henry Quinn, 76, of Burlington, died Thursday, July 21, 2022, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born February 23, 1946, in Illinois, he was the son of Jesse and Cora Krems Quinn. On November 5, 1990, he married Sarah Zachmeyer in Danville, Ia..

He was a U.S. Army Veteran, serving during the Vietnam War from 1967 to 1969. He was a gunner operator on a Hellcat tank.

He was a truck driver for many years, and owned a bar for a few years.

He had a great sense of humor, was a gun enthusiast, and enjoyed fishing. He was a very loving and dedicated grandfather.

Survivors include wife, Sarah Quinn of Burlington, one daughter, Jennifer (Derek) Baker of Burlington; two sons, Richard (Sandy) Quinn of Mediapolis, Ia., and Jamie (Katy) Dowell of Gallatin, Tenn., 10 grandkids, and 6 great grandkids.

He is preceded in death by one daughter and his parents.

A graveside service for George will be at Keokuk National Cemetery at a later date.

Connie E. Martin, 80, of Burlington, died Thursday, July 21, 2022, at her home.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Born February 27, 1942, in Donnellson, Ia. she was the daughter of Melvin Ernest and Bonadelle Jean Fullerton Raid.&nbsp;

Connie graduated from Burlington High School in the class of 1959 and attended Parsons College in Fairfield, Ia.&nbsp;

On January 30, 1961, Connie married Robert L. Martin. She was a homemaker and secretary for Raid Quarries and the Burlington Fire Department. Connie attended Grace United Methodist Church.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Connie enjoyed her coffee groups spent with beloved friends. She liked knitting, quilting, and sewing and was a member of the First United Methodist Quilters group. She loved watching her grandchildren’s activities which were very important to her. Connie enjoyed playing bridge. She had an infectious sense of humor and loved spreading laughter and joy to everyone.&nbsp;

She liked knitting, quilting, and sewing and was a member of the First United Methodist Quilters group. She loved watching her grandchildren’s activities which were very important to her. Connie enjoyed playing bridge. Connie E. Martin

William "Dub" Hedgepeth Jr.,91, of Burlington, died Wednesday, July 20, 2022, at the Klein Center in West Burlington. Sally appreciated all the kindness, care, and hugs given by the staff at the Klein Center, Cobblestone Hill, and his hospice nurse, Amy.

Born March 4, 1931, in Lawrenceburg, Tenn., he was the son of William M. and Cora B. Lanning Hedgepeth. On August 11, 1956, he married Sally Ann Hanrahan at St. John's Catholic Church in Burlington.

He graduated High School in Lawrence County, Tenn. in 1951. He obtained a Bachelor's in Business Administration from Iowa Wesleyan in 1958.

Dub was a proud U.S. Air Force Veteran, serving during the Korean War from January 15, 1951, until January 14, 1955. He was proud to receive his Quilt of Valor on December 7, 2021, on the anniversary of Pearl Harbor at the Klein Center.

He worked as a Capital Budget Director for J.I. Case as well as Riverfront Realty and was the co-owner and operator of Hedgepeth Antiques with his wife Sally.&nbsp;

In high school, he played trombone in the Lawrence County High School Marching Band. He enjoyed going to casinos, buying and selling antiques, and taking day trips with his wife. Dub loved attending Midwest Old Threshers in Mount Pleasant where he and Sally had a booth for 17 years in the Antique Building on the grounds. He also enjoyed the company of his cats. Dub was a member of the American Legion, Iowa State Deputies and Sheriff Association, and a proud member of the NRA. He was an avid Iowa State Cyclone fan. He was a kind and devoted husband, father, brother, uncle &amp; friend.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Sally Ann Hedgepeth of Burlington; brother, Paul L. (Donna) Hedgepeth of Fort Madison; sisters, Margaret (Warren) Mehmken of Sperry and Esther Hedgepeth Wright of Dallas, Tex.; special friend, Mark Miller of Burlington and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, beloved daughter, Laura, and grandchild, Christy, brother, Clifford Hedgepeth, sister Kathleen Annegers, and 2 brothers-in-law, Warren Mehmken and Harold Wright.

Visitation will be from 12 to 7 p.m. with the family to receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. &nbsp;Wednesday, August 3, 2022, at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home. Cremation will be entrusted to the care of Prugh Crematory following the service. Burial will be held at Sacred Heart Cemetery at a later date.

Monica "Mouse" Mesler, 85, of West Burlington, died at 3:20 p.m. Wednesday, July 20, 2022, at the Danville Care Center in Danville.

Born May 3, 1937, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Louis B. and Charlotte Hagerty Meyer. On August 9, 1958, she married James P. Mesler in Burlington.

She was a 1955 graduate of Burlington Catholic High School.&nbsp;

Monica worked as a Des Moines County Court Reporter and at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant in the Security office. With her husband, she was the co-owner of Mesler Supply Inc. for over 40 years. They also owned and operated the Carhartt Store.

She was a member of SS. Mary and Patrick Catholic Church and a member of St. Mary's Altar and Rosary. She was on the West Burlington Planning and Zoning Board for over 26 years. She assisted her husband in the founding of the Iowa Trappers Association. She enjoyed doing jigsaw puzzles, playing cards, and helping others. She loved wintering in Las Vegas.

Survivors include husband, James P. Mesler of West Burlington; four children, Ann Marie Kirk of Burlington, Jean Elizabeth (Leon) Helling of Ankeny, Thomas James (Deborah) Mesler of Rome, Pa., and Patrick Joseph (Anna) Mesler of Burlington; nine grandchildren, Janette Kirk-Yenchko, Eric (Natasha Knutson) Rahn, Jana (Timothy) Rahn-Kilfoy, Nathaniel (Kristina) Poli, Brooke Poli, Summer Mesler, Lily Mesler, Breana (Michael) Williams-Hawkins, and Gage Mesler; and eight great-grandchildren Evelyn, Claire and Logan Yenchko, Luca Rahn, Kaden Kilfoy, and Avery, Sydney and James DeWayne "J.D." Hawkins; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother.

Eugene Wilson “Buster” “Buzz” Smothers Jr., 67, of Burlington died Tuesday, July 19, 2022, at his home.&nbsp;

Born, September 3, 1954, in Burlington, he was the son of Eugene Wilson Smothers Sr. and Marion Louise Bridgeman Smothers Sargent.&nbsp;

Eugene graduated from Burlington High School and took welding classes at Southeastern Community College. He served with the Iowa National Guard. He married Kenna Ryner and they later divorced.&nbsp;

Eugene was a welder at Coppes-Murray, Grain Belt Equipment, Ceco Building Systems, and Nunnikhoven Mold Company. He had a green thumb and enjoyed growing Cactus and houseplants. He also liked cars.&nbsp;

Survivors include his children Quinton Smothers of Burlington and Deanne (Matt) Saddoris of New Windsor, Ill.; grandchildren Aleecia Saddoris, Conner Corman, Illiana Saddoris, Oden Hill, and Bryson Saddoris; siblings Wenona Lightner of Kansas City, Mo., Alva (Dennis) Anderson of Burlington, Allyn Smothers of Burlington, Roy (Kris) Smothers of Burlington; several nieces and nephews.&nbsp;

He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Roberta Dochterman, and Brother Daniel Smothers.&nbsp;

Cremation has been accorded and entrusted to the care of Lunning Chapel.&nbsp;

David Charles Shaw, 65, of Fort Madison, died at 5:29 PM Tuesday, July 19, 2022, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in West Burlington.

Born July 8, 1957, in California, he was the son of Robert and Judith Irwin Shaw. He was married to Gloria Shaw with whom he had one daughter. They later divorced. In 2007, he married Theresa Bougher in Las Vegas.&nbsp;

He worked in construction for several years, and also worked as a drill press operator for Bagcraft Paper Company in Ft. Madison, Ia..

He was of Christian faith. He was a very hard worker and always punctual. Family meant a lot to him. Dave was an all-around good husband, who enjoyed antique shopping, collecting model cars and memorabilia, watching NASCAR, and going fishing at Mirror Lake in Arkansas. He had many tools and loved to tinker and work on whatever he could get his hands on.

Survivors include wife, Theresa Shaw; one daughter, Rachel Lara, four grandchildren, Isaiah, Alyssa, Gabby, and Sammy Lara; two step-daughters, Angelina Hernandez, and Christa (Josh) Dennison; two step-sons, Wayne Gann and Randolph Meacham; eight step-grandchildren, Donovan and Lexis Hernandez, Braelynn Rokey, Drake and Alana Taylor, and Claire, Sierra and Blade Gann; one step-great-granddaughter, Willow Hernandez; five brothers, Rick McDougall, Robbie Campbell, Mark Campbell, John Campbell, and Glen Shaw; two sisters, Desirea Robinson and April Corral; and several nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents and his stepmother, Nancy Shaw.

David Charles Shaw

Rita Marie Miller, 93, of Burlington, died at 12:35 am Wednesday, July 20, 2022, at the New London Nursing and Rehab in New London.

Born November 11, 1928, in Burlington, she was the daughter of William and Genevieve Kramer Watznauer. On January 30, 1946, she married Clarence "Babe" Gerald Miller in Fort Madison. He died on January 3, 1994.

She did many jobs throughout her life, working at BB's Greenhouse, tending to a fruit farm and a dairy farm, and Spring Sand and Gravel.

She was of the Catholic faith. She was very strong, both physically and strong-willed. She loved cardinals, gardening, and hanging baskets of flowers. She was a great cook and baked almost every day. For the grandkids, she made cinnamon rolls every Saturday, and homemade ice cream every Sunday. She loved to host, and would regularly throw Tupperware parties, although even when she had guests, she could still be found helping Babe out in the field. She enjoyed square dancing, shopping, puzzles, and playing bingo. She kept a very clean house and was a dedicated homemaker. She loved her family and grandkids, and was always very generous, with big gift boxes at Christmas time, and always being there to help when they needed her. She was a kind soul, and never said a bad word about anyone.

Survivors include four daughters, Shirley Pratt of Burlington, Marilyn (Kendall) Burns of Vernon, Ariz., Patricia Jones of Burlington, and Gena Fritz of Denmark, Ia.; five grandchildren, Guy (Dawn) Pratt II of Mediapolis, Ia., Derek (Alison) Jones of Burlington, Danielle (Nick) Schmitz of Mediapolis, Ia., Jena Fritz of Burlington, and Rachel Fritz of Des Moines, Ia.; six great-grandchildren, Samantha Pratt and Guy Pratt III,&nbsp; Matthew and Abigail Jones, and Tyler and Ava Schmitz; one brother, Floyd (Delores) Watznauer of Fort Madison, Ia.; one sister, Vera (Dick) Boeding of West Point, Ia.; and several dozen nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by three sons-in-law, and ten brothers and sisters.

Visitation will be from 11:30 to 1:00 p.m. with the family to receive friends following an 11:30 a.m. Rosary Service on Saturday, July 23, at Divine Mercy Parish-St. John the Baptist Catholic Church.

The Funeral Mass of the Resurrection for Rita will be 1 p.m. Saturday, July 23, at Divine Mercy Parish-St. John the Baptist Catholic Church with Very Rev. Father Marty Goetz as the Celebrant. Burial will be in South Walker Cemetery following the service.&nbsp;

She was a kind soul, and never said a bad word about anyone.Survivors include four daughters, Shirley Pratt of Burlington, Marilyn (Kendall) Burns of Vernon, Ariz., Patricia Jones of Burlington, and Gena Fritz of Denmark, Ia.; five grandchildren, Guy (Dawn) Pratt II of Mediapolis, Ia., Derek (Alison) Jones of Burlington, Danielle (Nick) Schmitz of Mediapolis, Ia., Jena Fritz of Burlington, and Rachel Fritz of Des Moines, Ia.; six great-grandchildren, Samantha Pratt and Guy Pratt III,&nbsp; Matthew and Abigail Jones, and Tyler and Ava Schmitz; one brother, Floyd (Delores) Watznauer of Fort Madison, Ia.; one sister, Vera (Dick) Boeding of West Point, Ia.; and several dozen nieces and nephews.She is preceded in death by three sons-in-law, and ten brothers and sisters.Visitation will be from 11:30 to 1:00 p.m. with the family to receive friends following an 11:30 a.m. Rosary Service on Saturday, July 23, at Divine Mercy Parish-St. John the Baptist Catholic Church.The Funeral Mass of the Resurrection for Rita will be 1 p.m. Saturday, July 23, at Divine Mercy Parish-St. John the Baptist Catholic Church with Very Rev. Father Marty Goetz as the Celebrant. Mary Kay Elliott, 68, of Burlington, died at 11:30 a.m. Sunday, July 17, 2022, at the OakView Nursing Home and Rehabilitation in Burlington.

Born June 4, 1954, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Laurence L. and Phyllis Catherine McIntire McQuay. On May 14, 1977, she married Russell William "Rusty" Elliott II in Oak Street Baptist Church, Burlington, Iowa. He later died on February 13, 2022.

Mary Kay was a Burlington High School graduate.&nbsp;&nbsp;

She worked at HyVee in the bakery as a cake decorator before she was married, then became a homemaker.&nbsp;

Mary Kay was a member of the First Christian Church, Disciples of Christ. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, playing the organ, and decorating cakes. Mary loved animals and had a soft spot for cats.
